We got the opportunity to catch up with Triathlete and all round great gal Michellie Jones while on a photo shoot. The last time we say Michellie was at Heartland Triathlon in Sebring last summer. Do you have any pre race superstitions? If so, what would happen if you didn’t follow through with them? I always wear a new pair of shoes for a race. I’ve done it and nothing happened. I just like the fell of new shoes. Who do you think is the most badass triathlete in history? Badass can be two different meanings. Paul Newby Fraser. What’s THAT ONE SONG that gets you pumped up? Eye of the Tiger. I Play it on the way to the race. What bike did you have for your first race? Repco Traveler, cost me $200.00. Red in color If you had to pick one experience over the other - between winning Kona or taking home the silver in the Olympics - what would it be? Why does everyone ask me that question? I would never give either experience back. They were both special. What was your dumbest race mistake? Forgetting my cycling shoes for a race that was in the middle of nowhere. What do you think of Team Psych’s mascot El Fuego? I’ve seen it at many races. When you REALLY don’t want to wake up and workout, what motivates you to get out of bed? If I don’t train I don’t get paid. I now I’m never going to get paid if I don’t train. I also think of how good I’m going to feel after it’s done. Macca or Crowie? Macca and Craig both say nice things about and I think they are both they are both fantastic athletes. We hear you’re a burger girl – what’s on your "Cheeseburger in Paradise"? Cheeseburger? It’s the works burger. In Australia we put beets on our hamburgers. Questions were created by Nicole Davis, Steve Toll interviewed and Mark got the photo opportunity. We also wasted no time in setting her up with Team Psych gear and made her an honorary member of Team Psych.

FUELING UP FOR RACE DAY What's the best pre race day diet plan? Please include breakfast day of. Be specific cause last mad dog I was burping oysters and protein bar. Doug Buethe First - ha ha ha ha ha Second - ewwww, OYSTERS - really, OYSTERS??? OK - here is what you really need to know about eating before your race... 1. Do NOT try anything new or eat anything you don’t know exactly how you tolerate the day before or day of race day. Your diet before the race should include foods that you know you easily tolerate and digest. 2. Avoid - spicy foods, gassy foods, high fiber, high fat, excessive Sharon Evering, MS, RD, LD, CNSD protein, oh and alcohol (good luck with that one Team Psych!!!) Nutrition Operations Manager 3. Focus on CARBS. For some reason protein is much sexier to St. Joseph's Hospital market so we all have our cabinets packed with protein bars and powder to make shakes. However, before a race you have to focus on carbs. Getting enough protein in should have happened way before race day. Your goal should be to get enough carbohydrates in so you burn carbohydrates and carbohydrates only for fuel. So how much do you need. Of course everyone is different which is why you will want to play around with this prior to race day, but here are some recommendations. The day before - The majority of your kcals should be coming from carbs. Aim for 4-5 gm/ pound. For a 150 pound athlete that would be 600 - 750 gms. Since there are 4 kcals/gm of CHO that equates to 2400 - 3000kcals. It is a lot, but you want your body to be stocked with the nutrients it needs to get through that race. Looking at those numbers, it makes sense that you are not going to want to add much extra fat or protein. Of course you still want some, but keep your portions small and if you tolerate dairy well it is a good way to get a small amount of protein and carbs in at once. Also, I suggest getting some of these carbs from sports drinks as they are pretty easy to tolerate. OH - salt...this is not the day to avoid salty foods. You are going to be sweating it out the next day so particularly if you are a heavy sweater, add some extra salt to your meals. The day of - try, try, try to eat 3-4 hours before the race. If you can eat 4 hours before the race aim for getting 2gmCHO/pound. Keep in mind that the closer you get to race time the more simple you want your carbs to be. Gels and sports drinks are a good choice. I think it is the only time you will see me pushing the simple carbs. If you cannot eat that far ahead of the race, cut yourself back to 1gmCHO/pound. Try to get your fuel in at least 30 minutes before the race at the latest. You don’t want your body to have to work on digesting when you are trying to race. Hope that is helpful. If you would like more specific info on your specific needs or meal planning shoot me an email at sdevering@gmail.com. I am available for personal consulting on a limited basis. Still have to do the job that ensures my bills get paid :) For more nutrition information see our site http://www.teampsychtri.com/training/nutrition-
