DISABILITY MOTORSPORT
FOREWORD Ten years ago we were beaming with pride to have two karts with matching livery, a trailer and a pop-up awning as our trackside workshop. In lots of ways, those early days supporting injured troops were some of our best. It’s 2023 and we have created the world’s most advanced racing hand control technology, won a national championship, smashed records and helped more disabled people become racing drivers than exist in the rest of the world put together.
2
We have moved in to a new and much larger laboratory-of-a-workshop and have some really exciting plans for 2024, including leaving a legacy in disability motorsport in America. We are so much more than just another sporting success story - we are valuable commercial partners to all our sponsors. Join us as this bold and ambitious journey is stepping up to another level. CROMPTON “Cars have been part of my life forever. I’ve done some pretty amazing things, even after the accident that left me paralysed, but racing was something that was missing. I’d wanted to be a racing driver since I was 6 – when I was involved in the accident I thought it was finally game over. “Dave and the team have provided something I never thought would be possible for me as a paraplegic. Just being able to race is fantastic, but being able to do it against able-bodied competitors makes it even more poignant. We’re getting a sense of equality and independence back that we thought was long gone.” Full Bio & Meet Me Video Facebook
MATHURIN “When I look back to my life 20 years ago, it’s hard to believe I’m the same person. Money troubles had led me to a life of crime. I was dealing drugs because I was so frustrated by being turned down for jobs - it got me the money I needed quickly. “When I then crashed my motorbike, I went into hospital for a common riding injury. It went wrong, and I ended up completely paralysed. At one point I was communicating to my mum by blinking to correspond to letters of the alphabet. “Months of recovery followed and for a long time I didn’t know how I would ever be fully independent again. Team BRIT has totally changed the direction of my life yet again. I have a sense of confidence that I haven’t felt in ages, and I’m part of the most welcoming team, where everyone has their own story, but no one judges you.” Full Bio & Meet Me Video Facebook

SILVA “You wouldn’t look at me and think I have a disability. The truth is I’ve been battling for years with a condition that so many people just put up with and never confront. “I have ADHD and autism which wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my 30s. Although it meant I knew there was something ‘wrong’ with me, it was also an answer to the frustration I’ve faced for as long as I can remember when I’m trying to simply live my life. “Functioning at work, maintaining a strong and healthy relationship with my wife – all of it felt more difficult than it should be and now I know why. I’ve started working on a plan to deal with this, and racing is at the heart. I’ve never felt such passion, drive and determination to succeed. It’s lifted me and propelled me into a whole new world that I would never have thought was open to me.” Full Bio & Meet Me Video Facebook
COSBY “Everything that made me who I was, that formed my personality, was taken away from me when I couldn’t walk anymore. I was 16 – I knew I was going somewhere really exciting with a career as a motocross freestyler, and skateboarding was my life. Then it was all gone. “I was watching my friends having the life I should have had, stuck in my wheelchair. “Being offered the chance to race with Team BRIT was a turning point beyond anything I can describe. The first time I drove on a race track, it was the most exhilarating feeling and I knew it could fill the gap in my life when I lost my riding and skateboarding. “It’s given part of who I am, back to me, and the impact it’s made on my confidence and mental health is hard to describe.” Full Bio & Meet Me Video Facebook

FULLICK “My disability is a result of a fairly recent accident, so something I’ve had to adapt to and come to terms with. I’m not someone to give up or see the negative in situations, so I’ve quickly worked to make my life as positive and action packed as it always has been! “I was back on my motorbike just days after leaving hospital minus one of my legs! And when I contacted Team BRIT to find out about what they could offer, I was at the HQ and trying out the hand controls within a week. “The stories I can tell and the experiences I’ve gained after just one season of racing with the team, are pretty hard for anyone to imagine. I honestly can’t explain the fun, the excitement and the intense competition the team has provided. I just love it.”
WHITLEY “My disability has been part of who I am since birth, so I’ve never known anything different. I’ve always had a strong sense of determination and am extremely competitive, so being part of the Paralympian ski team was an incredible opportunity for me. “I haven’t been able to compete in able-bodied sports on an equal level before, so racing with Team BRIT has been life changing. To also be part of the first ever all disabled pairing to win a national championship was just out of this world.” Full Bio & Meet Me Video Facebook

MORGAN “I was only 15 when I broke my spine, so I’ve now spent more of my life in a wheelchair than out of a wheelchair. People expect me to say that when it happened I lost all hope and gave up. Of course it was hard, but I have honestly always looked at the positives – I could have died that day and I didn’t. “Instead, it’s given me opportunities I would never have had before, and Team BRIT has opened doors that have led to the most incredible things. “When I get out of my wheelchair and leave it in the pits to go out on track – it’s like I’m leaving my disability behind and driving away from the paralysis. Everyone else on that track doesn’t care that I can’t move my legs – they just want to beat me and I want to beat them. “I’m empowered, I’m seen in exactly the same way, and I have the same chances as everyone else. What could be better than that?” Full Bio & Meet Me Video Facebook
TRUNDLEY “When you’re autistic, the whole world is quite difficult and overwhelming and that’s really hard for anyone who doesn’t have the condition to understand. I’ve been dealing with ‘mental overloads’ for as long as I can remember and the anxiety I experience can be all consuming. Even holding eye contact with people is pretty much impossible for me. “The one place all of that goes away is in a racing car. When I put my helmet on, my autism disappears and I experience calm and quiet that is never part of daily life for me. I honestly believe it’s a huge advantage to me on the race track. I focus in a way that a lot of other people can’t, and I call it my super power. “Team BRIT has made this a part of who I am. I’m driving a McLaren GT4 across Europe, I have a full time job and I’m growing in confidence every day. It has been life changing.” Full Bio & Meet Me Video Facebook

MEDIA REACH “For six years, I’ve had the pleasure of handling PR and communications for the team. What started off as an incredibly unique and exciting launch story, which captivated the interest of national media, has become a regular story in regional, national, international and motorsport press.
With each new partnership and project comes new PR opportunities and the potential in America is huge. Because we’re a team based on people, not just on races, our story has global relevance. As we introduce ourselves to American audiences, race in new championships, and welcome new team members, these opportunities will continue to grow.”
We stand miles apart from other non-F1 racing teams when it comes to media interest, because of our unique human stories, our technological prowess and our drive to change the industry for the better.
Lucy Sheehan PR Manager
As long as we have people in the team, we have the most compelling and captivating stories to share.

RESILIENCE IS A WAY OF LIFE 22

RACING TOWARDS LE MANS We are well on our way to becoming the first all disabled team to compete in the world’s most famous 24hr race. Not as a garage 56 entry but a fully-fledged competitive entry. We are currently in discussions with several major manufacturers to partner with us for our journey to Le Mans. The provision of GT3 car this season will allow us to carry out a full testing programme ahead of our debut in the Le Mans 24hr.

“I’m Gay, I’m neurodiverse and I’m Asian! Team BRIT gave me a chance and welcomed me with open arms… #micdrop”
“Not only is Team BRIT all about inclusion when it comes to having a disability, they opened their arms to a wife & wife paring who faced their own issues with being gay and disabled, making Team BRIT a family within the motorsport community.”
“Being gay has absolutely nothing to do with racing, but everything to do with how you fit in with your team. Your team mates are everything in racing so when they accept you for who you are it means the world.”

WORKING TOWARDS EV RACING With the expert support and guidance from our Ambassador, Dr Andy Palmer, ex-CEO of Aston Martin and now know as “Mister EV”, we intend to be at the crest of EV racing. There is an enormous amount of work going on behind the scenes to make UK circuits ready to welcome EV racing... … and we’ll be there!
EMBRACING CHANGE 30
31
NEW WORKSHOP After 5 fantastic years at Dunsfold Park and enjoying use of The Top Gear Track, we simply outgrew the space. In October 2023 we moved to a much larger unit and gave our Engineering Director, Al Locke, carte blanche to create his new laboratory. With support from our partners bott, RS, CDW and JCC, he has impressed beyond all expectations.
32
OUR LABORATORY OF CHANGE & INNOVATION
RACING IN AMERICA We want to help other teams all over the world duplicate our success, starting with America. Team BRIT will enter 2 teams in the American Endurance Racing Championship and invite disabled Americans to join us. We will field 2 cars with 4 drivers per car – a total of 8 disabled racing drivers in 2 x 8hr races at the Virginia International Raceway on 31st May 2023. We will leave these two race cars, fitted with our hand controls, in the very capable hands of a race team set up for injured US veterans - Resilience Racing.
34
This is the perfect solution and will ensure Americans with disabilities can compete in motorsport, using cars fitted with the technology they need, run by a team that understands their requirements. This pilot project will be a shining example of cooperation, team work and resilience - to show what can be achieved. Email us for full information on Project America – mike@teambrit.co.uk
