Der Titel des Themas „poetics of the body“ setzt unter anderem die ästhetische und funktionelle Funktion und Beschaffenheit des Körpers in Zusammenhang. Die inneren Körperbausteine sind im Zuge dessen das Gerüst und der Grund für die äußerliche Erscheinung, wie der Mensch wahrgenommen wird. Wenn man auf die tragende Konstruktion des Körpers - das Skelett - schaut, fällt die Wirbelsäule als besonderes Verbindungsstück vom Rumpf zu den Extremitäten und dem Kopf auf. Durch ihren spezifischen Aufbau wird eine richtungsgebundene und gebende Funktionsweise erzeugt.

In unserem Projekt nehmen wir diese als Grundlage für ein adaptives Konzept, nutzbar am Körper.

In heutiger Weise ist die adaptiv angelegte, stabilisierende Form in physiotherapeutischen Maßnahmen zu finden. Dies gilt auch für dem Bereich des Extremsports.

Im alltäglichen Gebrauch gibt es bis heute allerdings genau kaum Beispiele für eine gezielte Alltagshilfe und unterstützende Funktionsweise, in Form Kleidung.

The topic „poetics of the body“ contextualises the aesthetic and functional constitution of the human body. Internal parts of the body constitute not only for the posture but also for the perception of a human. Being the load-bearing structure in a human body, the skeleton, and specifically the spine with its unique structure allow for a direction-orientated functionality.

The above findings form the basis for our project which presents an adaptively responsive concept to be used on the human body. Today, this concept is more or less widespread in physiotherapy and extreme sports. However, in everyday life, clothing that makes use of this adaptively responsive concept in order to support the body, is rare.

Ein Aspekt unseres Konzeptes sind anthropologische Grundlagen im Handwerk und der Herstellung von für den Körper produzierten Waren. Gerade in der Textilindustrie spielt Anpassungsfähigkeit, auf Grund dem von der Masse erwünschten Komfort, eine große Rolle. So wird in Geschäften nicht selten gefragt: „Ist die Größe für Sie passend?“, obwohl häufig keine modischen, noch direkt funktionellen Unterschiede erkennbar werden. Genau sich an diesen Trend richtend haben wir uns gefragt, ob es nicht möglich wäre, ein Produkt zu entwickeln, was sich mit Komfort an den Körper anpasst und ihn gleichzeitig zu gegebenen Zeitpunkt unterstützen kann. Das Prinzip der stützenden Funktion in der an den Körper angelegten Form ist beispielsweise schon am Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts als Vorläufer des Korsett aufgetaucht.

In diesem Projekt wird ausschließlich Wellpappe und Klebstoff verwendet um das Endprodukt her zu stellen. Die engen Rahmenbedingungen bezüglich des Materials lassen allerdings offen überlegen in wie fern das Konzept sowohl in dieser Form, als auch weitergedacht mit anderen Materialien um zu setzen wäre. So hat die Wellpappe auf Grund ihres spezifischem Aufbaus eine hohe Stabilität bei bestimmten Belastungsrichtungen. Auch eine dämmende und stoßabsolvierende Weise ist vorhanden.

One aspect of our concept is the anthropological basis in craftsmanship and production of goods expressively made for the body.

Customising plays a considerable role in the textile industry due to the widespread demand for comfort instead of functionality. It is common practice for salesman to ask whether the clothes are the right size although nor fashion-related or functional differences are visible. This trend is the reason we asked ourself, if there is a way to develop a product which combines both comfort and supporting functionality. For instance, the corset which has been invented at the beginning of the 16th century, illustrates an example for clothing with a supporting function.

For this project, the final product will be build solely out of corrugated board and adhesive. This restriction sets a cornerstone for further considerations regarding form and even different materials. The specific structure of corrugated board ensures for high stability, insulation effect and impact absorption.

Das fertige- und dargestellte Beispielmodell für unser Konzept basiert auf folgenden Überlegungen: Das Grundmodul ist in eine Richtung ohne Einschränkungen zu verbiegen, versteift aber ab einem gewissen Punkt, bei Biegung in die zur oben genannt - entgegengesetzten Richtung.

Vom Aufbau her handelt es sich um 4 mm dicke Wellpappe. Aus dieser sind sowohl das einlagige Grundgerüst, welches in Form - der aus nur einem Teil bestehenden - Weste, als auch die Aufgeklebten rechteckigen, über die breite gehenden „Aufsätze“ geschnitten. Bei den Aufsätzen werden von uns fünf Lagen der Pappe übereinander verklebt.

Der Durchmesser der gewünschten Versteifung kann durch eine Variation der Abstände, zwischen den einzelnen Aufsätzen verändert werden.

The ready made base model of our concept evolves from the following idea: the basic module can be flexed in one direction without limitation, yet stiffens at a certain point. The material is 4mm corrugated board. It is used for the one-layered basic framework to build the seamless/one-piece waistcoat as well as for the glued on rectangular pieces (= top modules). For those 5 layers of material were glued on top of each other. The diameter of the reinforcements to be achieved can be varied by the gaps between the single top modules.

In der Medizin wird das mögliche Anwendungsgebiet besonders deutlich. Bei Brüchen oder körperlichen Fehlstellungen kann eine Funktion wie Sie eine „Schiene“ übernimmt entstehen. Nicht nur die auf zuvor eingegangene physioterapeutische Funktionen kann das Konzept bieten. Gerade heranwachsende legen bei oben genannten Maßnahmen einen großen Wert auf die Optik. Kindern kann somit eine spannende Alternative, zu den aktuell sich auf dem Markt befindlichen Produkten, geboten werden. Die wie eine „Rüstung“ anmutende Optik verspricht Spaß beim Tragen.

The use of the base idea is most obvious in medicine: the function of a splint can be taken on and in addition to the medical-physical use it would be more attractive than a usual splint, especially for teenagers. Looking like a suit of armor it could promise more fun wearing it.

Eine weitere Anwendung kann im Handwerk oder auch der Industrie liegen, wo eine Unterstützung für am Fließband arbeitende Personen entsteht, wodurch Langzeitschädigungen auf Grund von Fehlhaltungen vorgebeugt werden können. Auch während der Büroarbeit wird eine permanente Sitzposition eingenommen, welche durch das System reguliert werden kann. Im Personenschutz und bei weiteren Exekutiven können Textilteile wie im Modell dargestellten Oberteil - eine leichte und kostengünstige Lösung zum Schutz bei Einsätzen sein. Aus anderen Materialien gefertigt ist ein moderne Art von Schutz gut vorstellbar.

A further perspective could be the application in craft and industry where especially assembly line workers could profit from a supporting clothing to prevent longterm body damage as well as long hours sitting office staff (e.g.back injuries). On top of that it might find application in personal protection as light weighing low cost protection systems, eventually made from other materials (see textile as shown).

Um eine für den Sport tauglichen körperlichen Schutz herzustellen müssen die Bedingungen von geringen Gewicht die damit auch einhergehende und geringe Einschränkung gegeben sein. Die verwendete Wellpappe kann nach unseren Erfahrungen genau dies bieten. Die vorhandene Struktur der Pappe führt einem hohen Luftanteil und damit zum geringen Gewicht dieser. Zudem lässt Sie zu eine hohe Stabilität zu erzeugen. Es wird vorstellbar, im Extremsport verwendete „Rückenpanzer“ oder jegliche andere Protektoren zu produzieren.

Ob für Motorradfahrer, um einen Schutz vor Überdehnung und äußeren Einwirkungen bei Stürzen zu schützen, oder im Fitnesstudio zur Stabilisierung der Wirbel. Der spezifische Aufbau wirkt als Unterstützung der Gelenke, Wirbel und auch der Muskulatur.

To make it a suitable protection item in sports it must be very light weighing, corrugated board offers an interesting showcase as light weight and stability are combined. So it could be an alternative to up to date back protection in motorcycling or skiing. Furthermore it could help prevent overstretching and help stabilize the spine in fitness studio activity.

Durch den zuvor beschriebene strukturellen Aufbau der Pappe und die damit einhergehende isolierende Wirkung kann unser Konzept in der Art - wie auf den Bildern beispielhaft dargestellt - im sozialen Bereich genutzt werden. Für Obdachlose, welche häufig Pappe als Schutz vor Kälte nutzen, kann eine günstige Kleidung geboten werden. Die unterstützenden Funktionsweisen können auch gut vorstellbar im Alltag von Älteren Menschen oder solche mit Behinderung Gebrauch finden.

Zuletzt bleibt offen ob ein weiterer interessanter Anwendungsbereich des Konzeptes im Tanz finden kann. Tänzer könnten durch das Tragen der Kleidung bewusst in ihrer Bewegung eingeschränkt werden - es entsteht ein intensives „Tragegefühl“, welches auf den Betrachter übertragen wird.

As corrugated board is used it might find application in social care: homeless tend to use corrugated board as shelter from cold, so corrugated board-clothing might be offered to them. Te elderly oder disabled might also find application in our concept.

At least it could be used in dance to imitate movements and offer a different sense of dealing with clothing which could be interesting artistic means.

Eine Schärfung des Blickes ist das Ziel. Donald Judd versuchte mit einfachen geometrischen Formen in seinen Werken genau das zu erzeugen.

Der im Sommer 1928 geborene Künstler bezeichnete sich allerdings stets als Empirist, einer der eine gerechtfertigte - wahre Erkenntnis - durch eine Sinneserfahrung erhält. Heute gilt er als einer der bedeutendsten Vertretern der „minimal art“.

Aluminium ist der einzige Bestandteil seines unbetitelten Werkes von 1991. Fünf Würfel, nur aus jeweils vier dünnen Seiten bestehend, vorne und hinten geöffnet, stellen den Rahmen dar. In ihnen stehen aufrecht, gleichmäßig angeordnete Verstrebungen. Ihre Wirkung macht das Werk zu einem Objekt des Raumes, eines von Judd’s Zielen.

Spiegelungen und Schatten machen es schwierig - und auf Bildern fast unmöglich - eine klare Anordnung zu verstehen.

Solche Erfahrung beim Erleben unseres Werkes sind verbunden mit Effekten wie diesen. Glas als nicht raumdefinierend und doch Richtungsgebendes Material, verbunden mit einer diffusen Spiegelung vom Aluminium sind die Grundelemente.

Einfachsten geometrischen Grundformen und Proportionen definieren weiter den Raum in seinem Minimalismus.

A sharpening of the view. That is one of Donald Judds main ideas by creating his Art. He tries to do so only using simple geometric shapes.

He is born in summer 1928 and called himself a empirist, a person who is able to get a real knowledge by using his senses. Today Donald Judd is called one of the main influencers in „minimal art“.

Aluminuim is the onely part of his untitled work from 1991. Five cubes, just thin sides and opened in the front and back - such as a frame. Inside there are struttings places vertical and in order. There is almost no possibility for the spectator to understand the clear placement. Reasons are the deffuse specularity from the beginning. Moreover the whole work becomes a piece of the surrounding room - another notion Judds.

Related impressions are generated in our work of art by unsing such effects. Glas as an „not roomcreating“ material takes care of producing an impression of the direct environment. In nexus of aluminium and his accompanying refelction the simple geoetric shapes become complex. Minimalismus is onely given in the ground plan, so there is a need for the spectator to explore the work and to sharpen his view.

Judd hatte einen großen Bezug zur Natur. Aus diesen Grund wird unser Projekt auf einer Wiese plaziert, welche mit der Weite spielt (vgl. Judd in der Wüste Marfa‘s). Städtebaulich wird das Gebäude bogenförmig parallel zur Promenade weiter geführt. Die Vorderseite und „haupt Ansicht“ liegt Süd-Östlich und tritt in einen Dialog mit dem gläsernen Parkhaus am Bahnhof. Eingebettet zwischen die Gehwege auf der Grünfläche wird auch hier die minimaistische, ortogonale Bewegung Judds aufgegriffen. Die - zur eben benannten Stirnseite - verlaufende Straße liegt um einen guten meter vertieft, verglichen mit dem Gebäude.

Das hat den Effekt, dass sowohl Autofahrer, als auch Passanten einen sehr horizontalen Einblick in das Kunstobjekt bekommen. Die Wirkung der komplexen Spiegelungen sind erhöht. Ein an der Nord-Ost-Seite befindlicher Baum tritt in Kooperation mit dem Gebbäude. Neben der erzeugenden natürlichen Spiegelungen macht dieser den Anschein sich in Richtung Gebäude zu lehnen. Auch hier: „Die Natur tritt in Beziehung zu dem Werk“.

All die Einflüsse an dieser Stelle verbunden mit dieser Ausrichtung führen zu einer unauffälligen Einbettung des Werkes und ein verschmelzen mit der Umgebung. Der Betrachter wird aufgefordert sich aktiv mit dem Gebäude zu beschäftigen und seinen Blick zu schärfen.

Was ist vorhanden, welche Ausschnitt nur illusion durch Spiegelung?

Judd had a great relation to nature. Due to this reason, our project is placed on a meadow which is playing with expanse (see Judd in the desert of Marfa). As regards urban planning, the building is located parallel to the promenade. The front and main view are located to the southeast and enter a dialogue with the glass facade of the car park near the Central Station. Nestled between the paths on the green; once again there is a connection to Judd’s minimalistic ideas and orthogonality. The building sits almost a meter above the road which runs along the front face of it. This has the effect that both, motorists and pedestrians, get an horizontal insight to the pavilion. The effects which are given by reflections are increased. A tree standing on the northeast seems to be cooperating with the building while it’s leaning towards to it. Once again “Nature is in relation to the work”. At this point, all the influences connected with the alignment, are leading to an unobtrusive embedment of the work in the environment. The viewer is prompted to actively deal with the building and to sharpen his gaze. What is really there? And what is just an illusion created by reflections?

Die zierlich wirkende Attika wird von einem Aluminiumblech verdeckt um einen Scheiben-Look in der Draufsicht zu erzielen. Die dünn wirkende Decke wird auf Grund von einer Gefälledämmung nur sehr geringen Lasten ausgesetzt. Ein aufgeständerter Bretterbelag schließt das Dach flach ab. Die Decke ist abgehängt und mit einer Aluminiumdeckschicht ausgestattet.

The dainty-looking attic is covered by a sheet of aluminium in order to look like a plate in the top view. The thin-looking ceiling is subject to only very low loads because of a gradient insulation. A boards-covering built on stilts completes the flat roof. The ceiling is suspended and equipped with an aluminium layer.

Innerhalb der hohlen Säulen befinden sich Stahlträger zum abtragen der Lasten. Um die Säulen herum wird ein LED Kranz geführt, welcher ein diffuses Licht - der Säule entlang - Richtung Decke wirft. Ein aufgeständerter Boden aus Sperrholz mit einer Aluminiumdecklage sorgt für den spiegelnden Effekt.

A steel beam is fixed in the hollow Pillars to strip the loads. Around the pillars there are LED wreaths which cast a diffused light along the column and towards the ceiling. A wooden floor built on stilts is coated with an aluminium surface layer and can thus create mirror effects.

Der Eintritt in das Gebäude ist schwellenlos. Ein Abflussgitter führt um das komplette Gebäude herum um an der Fassade herunterfließendes Wasser auffangen zu können. Eine Dreifachverglasung ist vorgesehen um gute energetische Werte erzielen zu können. Im unterliegenden Estrich ist eine Fußbodenheizung integriert.

The entrance to the building is without thresholds.

A drain grate leads along the whole building to catch the water which is going down on the facade. A triple glazing is used to achieve good energetic values. Underfloor heating is integrated into the underlying screed.

Eine Möglichkeit den größten Raum des Pavillons zu nutzen besteht darin, verschiedene Skulpturen und Exponate im Rahmen der Skulpturprojekte auszustellen. Wichtig ist, den besonderen Charakter des Raumes bei der Auswahl der Ausstellungsstücke zu berücksichtigen. Nur durch eine Harmonie beider Aspekte - Raum und Exponate - wird dem Besucher ein einmaliges Erlebnis ermöglicht.

One way to use the largest space of the Pavilion, is to exhibit sculptures and various exhibits as part of the „Sculpture Projects“. It is important to take into account the special character of the space in the selection of the exhibits. Only by a harmony of these two aspects of room and exhibits, the visitor can obtain a unique experience.

Im Rahmen der Skulpturprojekte werden auch einzelne Vorträge, Vortragsreihen und Seminare angeboten. Der größte Raum des Pavillons ist zur Realisation solcher Veranstaltungen außerordentlich geeignet. Sitzmöglichkeiten und Glaswände können frei gestellt werden, letztere dienen beispielsweise als Projektionsfläche. Ermöglicht wird eine optimale Nutzung, auch bei hoher Frequentierung, ohne ein beengendes Gefühl entstehen zu lassen.

Individual lectures, lecture series and seminars are offered as part of the „Sculpture Projects“. The largest room of the Pavilion is extremely suitable for the realization of such events. Seating and glass walls can be set up freely, the latter can also serve as a projection surface. Optimal use is possible even at high frequency without creating a constricting feeling.
