In diesem Privathaus entwickelte der Architekt Luis I. Kahn seine klaren Raum und Lichtkonzepte, besonders prägnant.

1961 wurde es im Auftrag Magaret Esherick´s in der Nachbarschaft Philadelphias, USA vollendet.

Das Haus integrierte er als quaderförmigen Körper in das großzügige naturbelebte Grundstück.

Die reduzierte Grundform wählte er, damit im Innenraum das Erlebnis von Licht und Raum intensiver ausfällt.

Luis Kahn entwickelte sein Raumkonzept basierend auf seiner Ideologie der Hierarchie der Räume. Diese Aufteilung lag in der Differenzierung zwischen dienenden und bedienten Räumen.

Jedoch verfolgte er dabei keinen funktionalistischen Gedanken, sondern wollte den Räumen eine autonome Form verleihen. Daher sollten untergeordnete Zonen, wie für Erschließung und Installation, eigene Räume oder Raumkörper erhalten und den bedienten Räumen zugeordnet werden.

Seine klar ersichtlichen Licht und Raumprinzipien im Esherick House erklären, wieso Luis I. Kahn zu den bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten Architekten Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts zählte.

This single building presents the clarified and defined room and light concepts of Luis I Kahn.

It was completed in the neighborhood of Philadelphia, USA, for Mgaret Esherick, a carpenters wife.

The cubik mass of the building was blended into the spacious and nature vivid property.

Luis Kahn chose a simple form to intensify the experience of the incidence of light.

He developed his room plan along his stict ideology of the hierachie of roomtypologys.

He parted the rooms in served and servant spaces. He did notpersue a funktionalistik idea, because he wanted to assign the rooms an autonomous form. Therefore the secondary rooms should be distributed an own body and attached to a primary room.

The characteristik light and room concepts of are the reason for Luis I. Kahns possibilities the influence the Architekture of the mid 20th century.

Der Entwurf des Privathauses Grundriss ist abstrahiert in vier Kubaturen gegliedert. Diese erstrecken sich über die gesamte Tiefe des Hauses und verlaufen in den Geschossen übereinander parallel. Aufgrund der Hierarchie der Räume wechseln sich dienende und bediente Räume ab.In der Analyse des Grundrisses sind die einzelnen Raumkubaturen mit unterschiedlichen Graustufen gekennzeichnet. Die helleren Töne zeigen jeweils die bedienten Räume an.

Die Räume unterscheiden sich in ihrer Breite und Geschlossenheit.Aufgrund der ihrer Unterordnung verbergen sich die dienenden Räume in kleinen Zellen, welche sich in eine schmale geschlossene Raumkubatur zusammenschließen. Sie verschließen sich dem Innen- und Außenraum. Die Zusammenstellungen der Sanitärräume („ a“ und „e“) befinden sich übereinander.

Die dienenden Räume sind in ihrer Ausführung dominant und frei. Die Haupt und Wohnräume sind daher großzügig und lichtdurchflutet. Ess- und Schlafzimmer („b“ und „f“) sind aufeinander gestapelt. Das Wohnzimmer („d“) spannt sich über beide Geschosse. Der Erschließungsraum erstreckt sich über zwei Etagen innerhalb der schmalsten Raumkubatur. Er ist das Bindeglied zwischen allen bedienten Räumen. Die Räume sind in der Horizontalen und Vertikalen miteinander verbunden und stehen in ihrer Abfolge und Anordnung in Abhängigkeit zueinander.

Mittels der Abstraktion der Raumkubaturen haben wir versucht die Räume neu zueinander anzuordnen, ohne die Abhängigkeit der Räume dabei zu verletzen. Das Ziel dabei war es aus der strengen Rechteckigen Grundform des Kubus auszubrechen und neue Gebäudeformen zu erhalten.

The design of the building is divided in four abstrakt cubik corpusos. Each streches alongside the ull depth of the house. They run parallel to each other in both floors. In the analysis these single rooms are distinguished through different shades of grey. The lighter shades mark the served spaces.

The rooms differenciate in their width and their enclosure. In result of their inferiority the servant spaces are ordered in small parcells, which are combined in straight cubaturs. they block the inner and outer surroundings out. These combinations of sanitary rooms („ a“ und „e“) are located are stacked over each other.

The served spaces are doinant and vacant in their execution. therfore the main and living rooms are spacious and radiatet with light.

Dining and sleeping room („b“ und „f“) are lying upon each other. The living room („d“) expands over. The subdivision reaches in full height within the slimest roombody. It is the link to all the served spaces. The rooms are hrizontaly and vertikaly conected and their sequence and arrangament are depended on each other.

Using the abstraktion of hte room cubiks we attempted to develop neu coordinations of the rooms.

The ambition was to break the strict basic form of the building and to create a new shape for buildings.

Für einen harmonischen Entwurf wollte Luis Kahn trotz der klaren Funktionstrennung einen Raumfluss erzeugen. In dem Raumkonzept werden die dienenden Räume den bedienten zugeordnet.

In diesem Zusammenschluss erfährt die Strenge Hierarchie eine teilweilige Auflösung.

Deswegen ersetzte er teilweise die Wände durch Schiebetüren an den Schnittstellen zwischen dienenden und bedienten Räumen oder brach sie auf.

Die Treppe ist daher kein gesonderter Kern, sondern ist nur in minimalster Ausdehnung mit einer Täfelung umschlossen um einen Übergang von Wohn- und Esszimmer zu ermöglichen. Über die Verbindung der Galerie erhalten alle bedienten Räume optisch einen Zusammenschluss. Von dort betrachtet kann sich der Wohnraum sich in seiner gesamten Ausdehnung entfalten. Um den Raumflusss nicht zu stören hat er Zusammen mit dem Verwandten der Auftraggeberin und Tischlermeister Warthon Esherick alle Regale und Schränke innerhalb der Fensterrahmen und Wandelemente integriert.

In der Organisation und Freiheit seiner Grundrisse kann man die Anklänge einer modernen Wohnkultur erkennen. Er beginnt den Gedanken umzusetzen, dass die Küche als Erweiterung des Wohnraumes dient und das Schlafzimmer als separates Reich funktioniert. „The Kitchen wants to be the Living Room.

The Bed Room wants to be a little house by itself.“ Um diesen Gedanken weiter auszuführen, haben wir seine Umsetzung extremisiert. Dabei haben wir alle Wände, welche dienende und bediente Räume trennen entfernt.

Luis Kahn`s aim was to create a harmonic design, a flow of rooms in spite of the clearly different roles of the rooms. In his concept the serving rooms are assigned to the served ones.

This combination partly breaks up the strict hierarchy.

Therefore he opened the walls in some places between the serving and the served rooms or he replaced them by sliding doors.

Hence the staircase is not a separate core, but is just extending to its minimum, surrounded by panels, allowing the transit between dining room and living room. All served rooms are connected visually by the gallery. Seen from there the living room stretches to its full size. Together with the relative of the principal, the master carpenter Warthon Esherick, he integrated all cabinets and racks into the window frames and wall elements, not disturbing the flow of rooms.

Today we can see the beginning of a modern home decor in the organisation and liberty of his layout.

He starts to make the idea becoming real that the kitchen is an extension of the living room and the sleeping room is a domain of its own. „The Kitchen wants to be the Living Room.

The Bed Room wants tu be a little house by itself“ To follow this idea we have driven its realisation to an extreme. All walls which separated serving and served rooms were removed. The ground floor becomes one contiguous and transparent room.

Dabei wird im Erdgeschoss ein zusammenhängender Transparenzraum geschaffen. Dem heutigen Lebensstil entsprechend sind Küche, Ess-und Wohnzimmer keine getrennten tätigkeitsgebundenen Räume mehr, sondern können als ganzheitlicher Aufenthaltsraum genutzt werden.Im Obergeschoss wird Schlafen, Waschen und Umkleiden zur Schau gestellt und als eigener Privatbereich begriffen. Da die Möbilisierungswände wegfielen, wurden alle Regale bis zur nächsten abschließenden Wand fortgeführt.

Mit diesen Modernisierungsmethoden haben wir Raumkonzepte innerhalb der neu gefundenen Gebäudekubaturen ausformuliert. Da der Mensch Rückzugsmöglichkeiten und Privatsphäre braucht wurden zusätzlich Wände ausgeprägt, um Nischen zu schaffen und das WC abzutrennen.Der private Schlaf- und Waschbereich wurde in seiner Trennung vom öffentlichen Wohnbereich physisch durch eine gelenkte Wegführung über die Galerie verstärkt.

Kitchen, dining room and living room are no longer separated by their function, but can be used as one holistic common room, corresponding to today’s lifestyle.

Sleeping, washing and dressing are shown in the upper floor, seen as an own separate area.

All racks were extended to the next existing wall, following the removal of the walls between.

Using these methods of modernisation we have framed concepts for the rooms within the cubature. Persons do need room for retreat and privacy, therefore we added some walls to create niches and to separate the bathroom.

The segregation of public living room and the private sleeping- and bathroom is strengthened by the way via the gallery.

Die schlichten Fassaden lĂśst Luis Kahn durch vielseitigen Fenstern und Alkoven auf.

Sie verleihen ihnen Lebendigkeit und Tiefe.

Die asymmetrische Anordnung der Fenster bricht die strenge Symmetrie und erweckt Lebendigkeit. Die Fenster als eigenes System betrachtet befolgen eine innere Symmetrie folgen. Ihr vorwiegender Grund ist jedoch nicht die Fassadengestaltung. Sie sind auf den Innenraum mit seiner Funktion abgestimmt um optimal zu beleuchten..

Daraus resultierend sehr unterschiedlichen Fassaden. Sie entfalten sich von einer fast gänzlich geschlossenen Front bis zu einer ßberwiegend aufgebrochenen.

Luis Kahn uses windows and alcoves to enrich the plain facades. They create agility and profoundness.

The asymmetric arrangement of the windows breaks the strict symmetry and gives liveliness.

The windows seen as their own system follow an inner symmetry. However, their main reason is not to structure the facade, but to follow the function of the room and to light it to an optimum.

The result are very different facades. They span from a nearly closed facade to a predominant opened one.

Die bedienenden Wohnräume haben an den Stirnseiten raumhohe und raumtiefe Fenster, Um zur Straßenseite die Privatheit im Erdgeschoß zu erhalten setzte Luis Kahn T-Fenstermodule ein.

Diese Sonderart der Fenster ermöglicht eine Belichtung, welche sich von schmal und privat nach oben hin öffnet. WWDie Fenster haben ein integriertes Licht und Lüftungssystem, welches sich über Holzklappen steuern lässt. Dadurch passt sich die Fassade dem Klima und der Jahreszeit an. So bleibt das Haus wandelbar und lebendig.

Folgend sind die beiden Hauptfenstermodule mit ihrer klappsituationsabhängigen Lichtausdehnung in Schnitt und Grundriss analysiert.

At the front the serving rooms have windows as high and deep as the room. To keep the privacy of the ground floor, Luis Kahn used T-shaped windows at the side facing the street.

This special type of window allows a light that stretches out from narrow and private at the bottom to wide and open at the top. The windows have an integrated system for light and ventilation, regulated by wooden flaps. Thus the facade can be adapted to the climate and the season and the house is convertible and alive.

Im Osten von Hokkaido, Japan, entwarf Jun Igarashi dieses reduzierte Wohnhaus. Es ist für zwei Personen konzipiert. Da es in einer industriellen und sich schnell wandelnden Umgebung liegt, wurde das Haus introvertiert gestaltet. Seine Sichtbezüge sollen unabhängig von dem Außenraum enstehen, und so werden jene im Innenraum gefangen. Das Gebäude ist ausschließlich seiner äußerlichen Materialien kontextlos.

Das Haus spannt im Inneren eine eigene Welt auf.

In der Mitte dehnt sich ein zusammengeführter Wohnraum aus. Dieser erstreckt sich über die gesamte Höhe des Hauses. Seitlich wird dieser Ort gerahmt von zahlreichen Zwischenebenen. In jenen sind die Rückzugsbereiche organisiert. Ihre Abschottung erlangen sie nur über die vertikale Distanz und einen transparenten Schleier. Mittels ihrer Höhendifferenz entziehen sich diese Plateaus den Blicken aus dem Erdgeschoss .Von ihnen aus kann man wie auf Balkonen in den öffentlichen Platz herunterschauen. Der Titel des Hauses beschreibt diesen passend als tiefes Tal.

Jun Igarashi created this reduced residential house for 2 persons. It can be found in the east of Hokkaido. It is placed in an industrial area undergoing rapid changes, therefore its design is introverted. Its visual orientation shall be independent from the neighbourhood, it is kept in the house.

Just the materials used at the outside are in context with the vicinity.

A world of its own opens inside the house In the centre stretches a combined living room, making use of the entire height of the house. This area is framed by numerous intermediate levels, which keep the places for retreat. They are separated just by the vertical distance and a transparent veil. By their vertical distance these levels are hidden from views from the ground floor. However, the view is going down into the open space like from a balcony. The title of the house uses the suitable phrase “deep valley”.

Im house of trough von Jun Igarashi wurde eine neue Auffassung von Intimität entwickelt. Diese orientiert sich nicht klassisch an geschlossen Wänden, sondern operiert nur mit Einschränkungen des menschlichen Blickfeldes. Diese Art des Umganges mit der Intimität wirft die Frage auf, welchen räumlichen Umfang diese benötigt.

Intimität bedient sich der Hülle als Schutz..

Kleidung und Gebäude nutzen diese Mittel..

Es stellt sich die Frage, ob Intimität wirklich eine ganzheitliche Verdeckung benötigt.

Ist eine gezielte Abdeckung in Teilbereichen schon ausreichend?

Wir haben eine Studie durchgeführt und analysiert wo diese Bereiche liegen und welches Maß an Geschlossenheit sie verlangen. Hierfür haben wir die Intimbereiche mit einem kubischen, stoffbespannten Gerüst verdeckt. Diese sind linear in Ebenen ausformuliert um die vertikale Schichtung der Blickfelder zu ermitteln. Diese Blickfelder verschieben sich mit den Bewgungsabläufen. Diese lineare Schnittmenge der Stoffstreifen bestimmt die erforderliche vertikale Ausdehnung der Hülle.

In einer weiteren Studie haben wir unsere kubische Verkleidung in seinen Ausdehnungsmaßen vergrößert. Mit den Maßen 1m x 1m wird jetzt ein Raum um den menschlichen Körper aufgespannt. Dieser übernimmt jetzt die stoffliche Hülle und die Aufgabe der Bekleidung.

Die unterschiedliche Höhe des Stofffeldes zeigt wie geringfügig die Verschlossenheit der Räume sein kann, um Privatbereiche entstehen zu lassen.

In his house of through Jun Igarashi developed a new view of intimacy. It is no longer achieved by closed walls, but uses the limitations of the human field of vision. This way to handle the intimacy raises the question which area it will need.

Intimacy uses the cover as a protection.

Clothing and buildings are using these means.

The question arises whether intimacy will need a complete cover. Is a partly cover of special areas sufficient?

We made a study and analysed where these areas are and what degree of cover they will need.

Therefore we protected the intimate area with a cubic framework covered with cloth. The necessary vertical spread of the cloth depends on the field of vision and this again changes with a movement of the observer. An additional study was done and the cubic framework was enlarged to 1m x 1m, encasing the human body and replacing the clothing as well.

The different height of the protective cloth show clearly, how little cover is needed to create the private room.

Sowohl Luis Kahn als auch Jun Igarshi kreieren einen starken Zusammenhang zwischen den Wohnbereichen. Sie brechen hierfür die klassische Trennung durch Wände auf. Die Räume werden dadurch als Ganzes erlebt. Jun Igarashi extremisiert dieses Verfahren. Alle Räume sind zum Zentralraum hin geöffnet, dessen Präsenz sich in dem gesamten Gebäude widerspiegelt. Dieser Umgang mit der Raumtrennung lässt erkennen, dass sie eine neue Auffassung der Art des Wohnens haben.

Dies hat uns angeregt zu analysieren, wie sich das moderne Wohnen entfaltet und worauf das zurückzuführen ist.

Jede Art zu Wohnen orient sich an den Abläufen der Tagestätigkeiten. Hierfür haben wir die einzelnen Tätigkeiten in Reihenfolgen gebracht und in ihre Verknüpfungen durch Wiederholungen dargestellt. Aus deren Kommulation und Abhängigkeiten haben wir geschlossen, dass diese nicht räumlich getrennt werden sollten, wie dies früher geschah. Im Gegensatz dazu sollten diese einheitlich lokalisiert werden. Die Konzentration auf einen Wohnraum mit WC in unmittelbarer Nähe und das Zurücksetzten der Privaträume ist hierbei das Resultat.

Dieses erweitete Wohnkonzept in Verbindung mit der Staffelung in Ebenen haben wir auf das Gebäude des zweiten Index Models übertragen.

Infolge der räumlichen Zusammenfassung bot sich an die Wohnfläche zu reduzieren. Der verbleibende Raum wurde in Garten umgewandelt. Mit der Erschaffung eines Außenraumes innerhalb des Gebäudes wird es unabhängig von seiner Umgebung und kann gänzlich aus seinem eigenen Kontext leben. Die Privat- und Sanitärraume werden durch Höhenversprünge beiläufig integriert, sodass sie nicht in den Zentralraum eingreifen. Ohne konkrete Trennung erhält der Wohnkomplex eine tätigkeitsangepasste Struktur.

Luis Kahn as well as Jun Igarashi create a strong relationship between the living areas. Therefore they open the conventional separation by walls.

The rooms will be seen as a whole by this. Jun Igarashi drives this to an extreme. All rooms are open to the centre room, whose presence is mirrored in the whole building. This approach of handling the separation of rooms shows their new understanding of the kind of living.

This triggered us to analyse the peculiarity of modern living and what caused this style.

Living is structured by the activities which have to be performed during the day. We put them in a sequence and marked their dependencies.

When we found cumulations and dependencies we decided that they should not be separated as in former times, they should be near to each other.

As a result we found the concentration on one living room with a toilet adjacent and the private rooms further away.

We transferred this extended concept of living to the second Index Model and combined it with the differentiation in levels.

Due to the aggregation of living rooms it became possible to reduce the total area, creating a garden. Such an “outer” room inside the house makes it independent of its neighbourhood and allows a life out of its own context.

The private and sanitary rooms are integrated on the different levels, not interfering with the main room. Without a distinct separation the total house has a structure that suits the activities.

Das Haus ist eine Fusion von Jun Igarashis und Luis I. Kahns Raumkonzepten mit einem experimentellen Wohnkonzept. Ziel war es, das Gebäude als eigenen Kosmos zu gestalten, der unabhängig von der Stadt funktioniert. Anders als bei Jun Igarashi schließt er sich nicht gänzlich in sich ein, sondern lässt die Umgebung in einer Flucht durch das Gebäude hindurchfließen. Auch Luis Kahn hat eine einseitige Durchströmung des Außenraumes entwickelt. Diese gezielte Führung schließt die Atmosphäre der Bahngleise und Oberleitungen ein und gibt dem Gebäude in derselben Richtung eine Durchsicht. Die übrigen Seiten grenzen den Blick auf alle Gebäude ab. Man erhält das Gefühl, dass die Bahn zur eigenen Welt gehört und man sich nicht in einem Stadtgefüge befindet.

Diese Abschottung gilt aber nicht für das Licht.

Die Außenhülle besteht aus transluzenten Doppelstegplatten, die einen Ein- und Ausblick nur schemenhaft ermöglichen. Ganz im Stile Jun Igarashis blendet sich diese in den industriellen Charakter der Umgebung ein. Von außen betrachtet ist nicht sofort ersichtlich, das dort ein Wohnhaus entwickelt wurde.

Im Inneren wurde die Idee umgesetzt, dass alle Wohnbereiche in Verbindung miteinander stehen und dass die Präsenz des Wohnraumes sich durch alle Winkel erstreckt.

Es gibt keine Zimmer und Wände, sondern nur einen Luftraum, in welchen alle Tageselemente in verschieden Ebenen lokalisiert sind. Einzig die Podeste dienen in ihrer Ausformulierung der Führung des Blickes und der Erzeugung von Intimität.

In this house the concepts for the layout of Jun Igarashi and Luis I.Kahn have been combined with an experimental living arrangement. The aim was to design the building as a cosmos of its own, working independently from the city. In a different way from Jun Igarashi it does not enclose itself totally, but allows the environment to flow through the building in one direction. Luis Kahn as well developed a flow through the outer room in one direction. This captures the atmosphere of the railways and aerials and opens the building for a view in the same direction. The other sides hamper a view into the building. This leaves the feeling of the railway to be a part of the own world, whereas the city does not belong to this world. However, this boundary does not include the light. The outer cover is made of translucent twin wall sheets, these allow just an unreal view in and out. Quite in the style of Jun Igarashi the outer cover matches the industrial character of the surroundings. At the first glance it will not be obvious that a home has been designed here.

Inside the building the idea was followed that all living areas are connected and that the presence of the living room stretches out into all corners.

There are no rooms and walls, just one space, giving room on different levels for the activities throughout the day. Solely the pedestals are directing the view and are creating intimacy.
