Foreword Numero® is more than just a card game. It is an invaluable resource for maths educators. Numero® has been designed for use by students of all ages, and assists in developing understanding of numeracy concepts and problem-solving skills. A focused Numero® program can significantly boost children’s mental maths abilities, help improve achievement in mental computation testing, and encourage tactical thinking and thinking ‘outside the box’.

The challenges in 400 Numero® challenges begin with simple operations and end with complex operations, matched with problem solving. They can be used with individual students or as whole class activities as part of the class program. The challenges can also be used for homework challenges or for training in preparation for intraschool or interschool Numero® competitions.

Teachers notes The challenges in 400 Numero® challenges are grouped according to ability level. Numero® challenges can be used with students of varying ability levels ranging from ‘at risk’ students to the ‘gifted and talented’. It is advisable to give students challenges at their ability level in order to achieve success.

Keys for introducing Numero® It is important to introduce Numero® at level one. It is recommended that students become proficient at each level before moving on to the next.

Challenge solving proforma When using the Challenge solving proforma (page xi) to work out the solution to a challenge, students should:

Enter the cards that are in the Centre and Hand for that challenge.

•

Place a mark near each card as it is used in their solution. This helps students to avoid accidentally reusing a card and assists them in working out how many cards they have won.

•

Write their solution step-by-step, with the working on each line being a full number sentence.

•

Write the answer card they use to take and how many cards they have won.

Teachers notes How to use Numero® challenges Objective

The objective of a Numero® challenge is to win the maximum number of cards (without breaking the Numero® rules).

Directions Cards are won when a single number card from the hand is matched to the same number value in the centre. This is called a ‘take’. The take can be a single card or a combination of cards from the centre, but is always taken with a single number card from the hand (the answer card).

Each challenge represents one turn of a Numero® game situation. Therefore, any cards from the centre are available, as are any wild cards from the hand. Each wild card played from the hand gives an extra turn. The challenge is completed when the answer card from the hand is played to ‘take’ the equivalent card(s) from the centre.

The simplest take would be matching the 3 from the hand to the 3 in the centre to win both cards.

There are several legal ‘takes’; however, there is a ‘best take’ which would enable the winning of 6 cards.

Note: Only one number card can be played from the hand and that must be the answer to the equation created from the cards in the centre.

Teachers notes As more cards are added to the challenges, the level of difficulty increases, as does the variety of possible solutions.

Once wild cards are involved there will sometimes be more correct answers than those provided.

As long as the Numero® rules have not been broken, any mathematically correct answer is acceptable.

Below is a more difficult example of a correct challenge.

Teachers notes Sometimes it is possible to perform a ‘multiple take’. This occurs when a single number card from the hand can be played to take more than one set of cards equivalent to that number.

Helpful hints and strategies for solving Numero® challenges •

Always add the number cards in the centre first. This can often lead to a good take, if not the best take.

•

When adding the centre, see if the total works with the division and fraction cards available.

•

Sometimes, when adding the centre, it is worth leaving out one or two cards to find a workable number; i.e. if you have a 1⁄4 in your hand, then creating a multiple of four with the number cards is a useful start. You can then add any unused cards at a later stage in your move.

•

The key is to look for patterns, obvious numbers that go together or certain wild cards that ‘work’.

•

It is often useful to use multiplication cards early on low cards.

Remember that every wild card played from your hand allows you another move.

•

Your turn is over when the number card (answer) is played from your hand to win the corresponding cards in the centre.

•

Zero move – this is where a subtraction card is used on a number to create zero. Then any multiplication, division, fraction or indices wild cards can be played on the zero without changing the total. To complete the move, make sure you can then add the zero to a number that corresponds with a matching card in your hand. Remember, the answer must always be in the hand! (See the ‘best takes’ on page vii for an example.)

•

Negative move – you can work in negative numbers, again using a subtraction card to initially create this situation. However, like with a zero move, you must always be able to finish the move by having it equal an answer card in your hand.

The ‘best take’ in the example above involves creating a negative number when playing the –5 wild card.

Multiple take – this is where you have more than one set of cards equalling the same total.

You can take as many sets as you like providing you only use the one number card from your hand—the answer. (See page viii for an example)
