FREE TUTORING IS BACK!!!! 2nd Grade and older, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, 3:30 – 4:30, 4TH grade room, beginning September 2021. This is not babysitting; your child should come with pencils, classwork, books, chargers, and whatever supplies they need to be able to do their work. FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH ALL YEAR!: Thanks to a Federal COVID-relief program, meals will continue to be free this year for enrolled students ages 1 and older at First Lutheran School. There’s nothing that you need to do; if your kids eat a school lunch or breakfast, there will be no cost to you. (If your children are under the age of kindergarten and you want the free breakfast, you will need to sit with them while they eat and then walk them over to class.) Breakfast is available from 7:40 – 8:00 in the cafeteria. Menus for breakfast and lunch can be found at www.fastdir.com/flcspc under the “links” tab on the left. SEPTEMBER 17 – NO SCHOOL / NO DAYCARE: We are grateful that we have the facilities that allow us to host other teachers from Oklahoma on this day; however, because of the magnitude of this event, we will be unable to have school or daycare on this day. We apologize for the inconvenience. THEME SHIRTS: This years’ shirts reference Colossians 1:15 – 20; “In all things”. They are dark green with orange, yellow, & blue lettering on the front, white lettering on the back. Stop by the office to see an example, or to purchase shirts. Order forms (attached) are due in the office (or the drop box out front) TODAY! BOXTOPS: Ditto BoxTops! We can’t clip them anymore; we have to scan receipts via the BoxTop app. If you would drop your grocery / office supply receipts 1) in the black mailbox in front of the administration building or 2) put them in your child’s backpack, they will get them to the office where we will scan them and then throw them away or return them, whichever you prefer. KELLOGGS is doing the FREE BOOK offer again. If you purchase Kellogg’s cereal in the next month, and aren’t participating yourself, please send your grocery receipt to Connie in the office so that she can scan it and order the new books for the school library. I can return your receipt to you or throw it away; whatever you prefer. 1ST QUARTER CHAPEL OFFERINGS: Chapel offerings this quarter will be used to continue First Lutheran School’s sponsorship of Victor and Rosario; children that we have “adopted” through Compassion International. Our sponsorship provides medical checkups, nutritious food, health and hygiene training, educational assistance, access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief, and mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God’s children. Most important of all, they will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. Please pray for them daily, and be generous with your chapel donations so that we can continue our sponsorship of children who are not as fortunate as we are. INK & TONER RECYCLING: Help us keep your costs down! If you have a new or used ink or toner cartridge that you are done with, please send them with your student and the teachers will get them to the office. We recycle these and earn credit on the supplies that the school purchases each month. THANK YOU for your help with this! TUESDAY MORNING LADIES BIBLE STUDY has a NEW NAME...."COFFEE WITH JESUS." Mark your calendar and plan to join us every Tuesday, 8:30am-9:30am in the Fellowship Hall. All mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and friends are invited to attend the new COFFEE WITH JESUS Bible Study beginning on Tuesday, August 31, from 8:30am-9:30am in the Fellowship Hall. Child Care will be provided. Plan to join us for this time of study and fellowship. PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Welcome to the first day of September. We will be closed Monday for Labor Day and we are closed on Friday - Sep. 17. On that day, we are hosting the state Oklahoma Lutheran Preschool through 12 th grade teachers on our campus. THANK YOU to everyone who joined us last night for the Back-to-School night information sharing event. DAYCARE – Ms. Vap: Daycare parents, if you have not brought your child's supplies for this school year yet (28x52 crib sheet, extra set of clothes, wipes, etc) please be sure to do so. ALL DHS subsidy will be transitioning to the new ECC Connect app. Please download the app and we will begin using this to check your child in and out. This will allow us to put necessary covid precautions in place to keep everyone as safe as possible. MUSIC – Mrs. Brey: Kindergarten and 1st grade are singing in church! Mark your calendars for SEPTEMBER 12th. I sent out a message to K/1 parents/guardians on FastDirect regarding this. If you have questions, please contact me. Thanks, and see you in church! WE NEED INSTRUMENTS – Mrs. Brey: We are looking for instruments to add to our collection! Our students have requested to play the clarinet, the saxophone, and the flute. Unfortunately, we don't have all of these instruments to let our students play. If you have any of these instruments (or others) and would like to donate/sell them, please contact Mrs. Brey or Mr. Birnbaum. Thank you! LIBRARY – MRS. MANNING: Happy September! In computer class we have been reviewing computer basics and internet safety. This month we will also begin keyboarding. Please bring a set of headphones or ear buds to be kept in the classroom. Basic ones work just fine! Please send the plug in kind, not Bluetooth. For art class, students are very welcome to bring an old shirt, a smock, or an apron to preserve their clothes. FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Thank you to all of you that came for Back To School Night. Please let me know if you ever have any questions or concerns! Book orders were handed out last night. They will be due on Thursday, September 9. Our Bible verse for Friday is Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Enjoy your 3 day weekend! SECOND GRADE – Ms. Felton: Hello! It is a joy to be teaching your children and helping them grow each and every day. Last week they told me that their brains were hurting and I gave them high fives for that! Make sure they’re getting good sleep, have water bottles, and bring a healthy snack every day for recess. If you did not make it to Back to School Night, I will be sending home a yellow folder with your child that includes the things that we covered. In this are the instructions to sign up as a family member of your child on an app called “SeeSaw.” Please download this app, as I will use it to communicate with you individually and as a class. It’s a pretty cool app! Memory this week is Mark 16:16, and the spelling list was sent out in the Week 2 Newsletter this past Friday, both printed and on FastDirect. Please check your child’s planner and red folder every night – a few students have not been doing their homework or turning it in the next day. THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: We all survived the first week. The kids are getting more settled with the routine and the pace we move at. Thank you to Story and family for the snacks and cases of water. We appreciated them!! Back to School Night: Thank you everyone who came. If you were unable to be here please check your child's backpack for a folder of information on our class. There is a yellowish paper in there that I would like you all to fill out and return. If you have any questions please let me know. This week: Memory, Spelling, and Reading test on Friday. Language: studying verbs this week, there will be a quiz on Friday. Math: Test on Friday. From here on out we will have 20 problems and a test will happen every five lessons. FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Thank you for the great family support last night for Back to School Night. If you were not able to make it last night, information has been sent home to look at, contact me with any questions. I can really see we are going to have a great year with amazing parents that are supporting their kids for a well rounded education. I am so blessed with a great group of kids that are eager to learn. Thank you! We are reviewing in Math, in Language we are working on types of sentences. We have our AR goals set, so read to earn those points. Our Chapel offering is school supplies for overseas students. Please look on FastDirect Bulletin Board for the electronic version of the Friday Letter. Spelling, Memory, and Reading tests are on Friday. Do not forget there is no school on Labor Day (Monday). Blessings as we continue to learn how we were fare blessed by God IN ALL THINGS. FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Brey: We took a quiz on "prophets" on Monday, and I'm happy to report that this class got good grades on it! Memory work is due on Friday, September 3rd (Matthew 5:3). Please talk to Ms. Vap, Ms. T, Mr. Birnbaum, or Mr. Brey with any questions regarding their classes. 5th GRADE MATH – Mr. Birnbaum: We had our first math test this week and most of the students did outstanding. I have some students struggling to keep up with the daily assignments. I believe we will have retired St. Mary's teacher, Sandy Sibley, working with four or five students beginning after Labor Day.
5th Grade & Middle School MATH – Mr. McKinley: Welcome back to school. The math classes hit the ground running from the first day. We took tests to see what we remember and forgot about math over the summer. During our class time we review and grade homework, go over the new material and start our new homework assignments. Hopefully, the homework assignments will be available on google starting this week. 6th and 7th – we have been working on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as we analyze patterns, variable expressions, and exponents. Then we will continue algebraic thinking to study area and perimeter calculations. 7th and 8th - we have been working on writing and evaluating variable expressions. This week is all about integers, number lines and graphs. SCIENCE – Mrs. Porter-Cain: 6th grade- We have been working on small group projects, learning how to research and investigate! 7th and 8th took their Chapter 1 tests today (Wednesday); be watching for project info! We have been working our way through the first chapters of the year! Middle school rocks! LANGUAGE – Ms. Kester: It was such a joy seeing parents and students at Back to School Night yesterday! If you have any questions that were not addressed during our time together, then feel free to send me a message in Fast Direct. As for classes, they are moving along nicely. Today, grammar students took their vocabulary tests after having prepared with quizzes earlier this week. Yesterday, religion classes participated in a worship-and-praise session. The day before that, fifth and sixth graders enjoyed a class experience that restricted their conversations to only fragments as opposed to sentences. It was quite the challenge! Next up: G5 ELA - Review of subjects, predicates, and action verbs; learning about compound and state-of-being verbs; revisiting reading log requirements G6 ELA - Review of sentences and fragments; learning about declarative, exclamatory, imperative, and interrogative sentences as well as out-of-the-ordinary subjects and verbs; revisiting reading log requirements G7/8 ELA - Review of capitalization rules; practice worksheets in class and as homework; revisiting reading log requirements G6/7 REL - Memory work due Friday; lesson 2 teaching and activities Lastly, please ensure your child has a binder for English class. That's all for now. Have a great rest of the week! SOCIAL STUDIES – Mr. Brey: 5th Grade: We will continue to compare and contrast the different colonies. We will hopefully be taking a test on the Colonies at the end of next week. 6th Grade: We are wrapping up introductions to economics and geography. We will talk about government later on in the week, and then we will learn about how different regions in the world are different economically, politically, and culturally. 7th Grade: We are exploring how religion, language, and governments can impact culture. We will have a test on this sometime next week. 8th Grade: Students have just learned about the motives for independence, as well as the use of propaganda and how it changed American viewpoints. We will soon talk about the Declaration of Independence and John Locke's theory.
