BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT is Tuesday, August 27, 2019. The Cheerleaders have a fundraising dinner in the Cafeteria from 4:45 – 6:15; you may purchase tickets in the office.

The schedule for the night goes like this: 4:45 – 6:15 Cheerleader’s Fundraising Dinner in the Cafeteria 5:15 First session starts for 5th grade and down in your child’s classroom.

5:40 Second session starts for 5th grade and down, in your child’s classroom.

6:00 all NEW families should meet in the church 6:15 ALL FAMILIES should meet in the church.

6:30 – 6:40 ALL 5TH – 8TH GRADE FAMILIES will meet in the church 6:45 ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILIES go to the middle school to their students’ homeroom class room, and rotate to the next class on the quarter hour(s).

What a great place to talk about the…BTSN (Back to School Night) Fundraiser Dinner – The cheerleaders will host their annual BTSN fundraiser dinner on August 27 from 4:45-6:15 in the school cafeteria. NATIONAL FREE & REDUCED SCHOOL LUNCH AND BREAKFAST PROGRAM: DHS requires us to remind you periodically that we not only serve lunch, but breakfast as well! If your child would like to eat breakfast at school, it is served in the cafeteria between 7:45 – 8:00 each morning. The menu for breakfast is listed on the lunch menu, which can also be found on FastDirect & in the Ponca News. We invite you to come eat with your students! The price for adult breakfast is $2.50 and the price for adult lunch is $4.00. (Student meals are $2.25 for breakfast and $3.00 for lunch.

First Lutheran School participates in the National Free & Reduced lunch and breakfast programs; applications for this program were available at enrollment, and more applications are available in the office if you would like to apply at any time during the year. If you applied and did not qualify at the beginning of school, you may qualify now if you have had a change in household income or members. You may re-apply at any time by checking with the school office for an application. Please remember if your child qualifies for free or reduced lunch, that will apply to their breakfast as well.

Reduced price lunches are $.40 and breakfasts are $.30. Please contact the school office if you have any questions.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a great summer. We have had a great first few days, and I look forward to this year; what an awesome class I have! Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: We did it!! First few days of school were a success! We are learning our routine and class rules. They love playing in centers, recess and the Alligator Song!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Welcome back to school! I hope you had a great summer! Our first few days of PreK have been Great! We are working on getting to know each other, and procedures. We started a quick review of the alphabet and sounds on Monday. When we get through all of the letters, we will spend about two weeks on each cluster of letters. We are also reviewing colors and shapes this week. Please remember to sign and return the mail folder

by Monday. Have a blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Welcome back to school! It is so hot outside that your child may want to bring a water bottle to school and that would be great. We will keep them by the windows. Please put your child's name on it (a sharpie works great). Please mark your calendar for August 27th which will be Back to School Night! I will pass out our "Monday Folders" that night and explain your child's homework along with other items on the agenda. Our class wants to wish Layden a happy birthday yesterday (8-20)! We have started reading! Our first two words are I and am. It is exciting in kindergarten with lots of learning going on!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Welcome to 1st grade! Thank you for sending your child to First Lutheran. I am looking forward to a great year! I am also looking forward to getting to know all of you more during the school year.

Our memory verse for Friday is Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Reading Notebooks went home on Monday, please be sure to follow the reading assignments each day. These need to be returned on Friday. God's blessing on our first full week of school!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Welcome Back to School! We are happy to have Olivia, Diya, and Roshan join our class. We're off to a great start, working hard to learn new routines, schedules, and expectations. On Tuesday, August 27 you're invited to come to our classroom to learn about our day. Check this Chatter for specific times. We'll have our first spelling test this Friday! Blessings!

THIRD GADE – Mrs. Steichen: Welcome back!! Here is to our first full week. Everyone is doing great and we have hit the road running in every subject. Please get familiar with the homework routine; this is what it will be every week. I will go more over homework and everything else next Tuesday at Back to School Night. Please get the Chatter for specific times. Yearbooks are in but will not be handed out till next week, we will have extra in the office to be purchased. We will have a yearbook signing next week. Please turn in any 2nd Grade Summer packets by Friday to either myself or Mrs. Powell. Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to an amazing year!!

We did not have anyone sign-up to be room parent for 4th or 5th grades. If you are willing to assist your child’s teacher/classroom with parties, field trips, etc., please contact the office at 580-762-9950.

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Welcome to another Fabulous 4th grade school year! Thank you for choosing First Lutheran. We are blessed to be here at First, and know that we are fearfully and wonderfully knitted together by our maker in our creation. We have a Love and a Grace with Jesus Christ that can never fail! I cannot wait to see how He blesses us together in 4th grade. Back to School Night is on the 27th! You can get last year’s yearbook (if not preordered) at Back to School Night. I can really see we are going to have a great year with amazing parents that are supporting their 2

kids for a well rounded education. I am so blessed with a great group of kids that are eager to learn. Thank you! We are reviewing in Math, in Language we are working on types of sentences, and this week we will be reviewing our AR goals.

Keep reading and earning those points. Please look in the Friday letter for Rose Hill Prep dates, all hands on deck with spoons, aprons and thread!

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! What a joy it is to be the teacher of this group of children! I thank God daily that He has put me here to guide these children academically and spiritually. You are always welcome to Fast Direct me, text me, or call if you need anything that concerns your child's school life. Working together, we are a powerful source in your child's life. It is a pleasure to welcome Heaven Delatores to our 5th grade class this year. We are thankful God has placed her among us. MIDDLE SCHOOL Mrs. Scott: Welcome back! This school year is already in full swing for our math classes. Every math class has started with Chapter 1 and have been working on estimating, patters, variables, exponents, and order of operations. The students are assigned homework each day and will have time in class to get started on their homework, if not finish their homework. Late work makes the grade book complicated so please finish and turn in homework on time! When I am grading the homework and tests, work must be shown. If a student gets a problem wrong but shows their work, they will get half credit instead of missing the entire problem. Students showing their work helps me and Mr. Birnbaum understand where the students are struggling and how to explain their mistakes. We are looking forward to a fantastic year!

Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings, Everyone! I want to welcome you back to school! There's a great vibe in the middle school this year, and I'm so excited! We have started the year off well and are really starting to get into our subjects after going over all of our policies and procedures. I pray God's blessings on all of you as we grow together this year.

Mrs. Hanson: Happy School Year!

Things are in full swing and I could not be happier with how things have been these first few days. We have awesome students and are going to have an awesome year.

The first couple days were used for getting comfortable being in school, getting connected with each other, and learning/reviewing the ropes. Please make sure you read over classroom policies and procedures even if this is not your first year in the middle school. It's always good to know how each teacher operates and runs things. Knowing expectations helps us meet them.

Please also review the school handbook and policies.

Next Tuesday is Back to School Night. It would be great to see EVERYONE there. This will help us all, teacher, student, and parent, be set up for a successful school year. Again, please plan on attending even if this is not your first year at the school or in the middle school. We in the middle school will actually be doing Back to School Night differently than we have done in the past so it is important that all families attend.

Mr. Covert: Welcome back to school! I pray that everyone had a wonderful summer, and got rested and rejuvenated for this new school year!

All of our classes are starting at the beginning. 8th grade will be starting off with the end of the French-Indian War and the beginning of the Revolutionary War. In 7th grade, we’re starting with the themes of geography, and people and culture before we move into the United States. As for 6th grade, we’re going to start off with Sumeria.

First Lutheran Church and School is packing and sending school kits to Lutheran World Relief (LWR)

Imagine having to choose between a meal or purchasing your child a notebook. Project Promise School Kits are sent to places where even the few required school supplies may be more than a family can afford. Pencils and paper can help write a positive future.

Why School Supplies?

Each School Kit Contains:        

4 – spiral wide-ruled 70-page notebooks 1 – ruler (12 inch with centimeters) 1 – small manual pencil sharpener 1 – blunt-ended scissors 5 – unsharpened #2 pencils 5 – blue or black ball point pens (no clickers) 1 – box of 24 crayons 1 – 2½” pink eraser

To the children who receive School Kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not.

Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, supplies like pens and paper may be more than many families can afford. And when parents can only afford to send one of their children to school, girls rarely get priority. Yet the education level of mothers has the biggest impact on development.

Last year, with the help of First Lutheran Students, we created ~200 school kits! We would LOVE to meet that goal again this year! We are asking each student/family at First Lutheran School to donate their choice of any of the supplies on the list, as few or as many as you would like. Or, if you are able, consider donating enough supplies to create one complete kit!

UPCOMING FIELD TRIP PARTICIPANTS! We need you(r) pictures for the yearbook!

The best way to get pics of your student in the yearbook, is to submit them!

“Replay It” is a free app from Jostens that is used to share your photos with the school for our yearbook. We have an account set up and once you download the app and link it to our school, you will be able to EASILY upload pictures from your phone right then and there. Once you download the app, it takes SECONDS to upload pictures! NO more saving the photos to a flash drive and then worrying about getting it back. If you have any questions or any trouble figuring the app out, please stop by the office.
