ITBS TESTING WEEK is NEXT WEEK!!!!!, April 19-23; Students will be testing in the mornings during this week. Please make arrangements now so that students do not have morning appointments this week. Students who arrive late will not be admitted into a classroom until the class finishes any testing in progress.

SCHATTE MEMORIAL EXTRAVAGANZA: Will be held May 1st in the FLS parking lot. We will have live music, vendors, and a BBQ cook-off! This event is open to the community. Check out our event on Facebook!

FLS TRACK MEET, 1ST-8TH GRADES, MAY 7, 10:00 – 2:00!: The yearly track meet is approaching fast. 1st grade and up will participate in a school-wide track meet, competing against their classmates in physical competition. This year all activities will take place on our campus. On the day of the track meet, you are encouraged to attend and we ask you lend a hand if possible; please contact the office if you can help out for an hour or more.

The kids will spend time outside, so be sure to apply and send sunscreen for the kids to apply during the day if it’s going to be sunny, and send a jacket/hoodie if it is a cool morning (with their name in it of course). Our 7th graders will be running a concession stand, with the proceeds going to fund their trip to Washington D.C. next year. Send money with your student if they wish to purchase lunch or drinks/snacks at the concession stand. If you have doctor appointments or need early pickup that day, please come extra early as it will take time to track down your student at their events. Students will be dismissed at the end of afternoon events, at approximately 2:00 p.m. Please check out with your student’s homeroom teacher before leaving.

SUMMER DAYCARE PACKETS are available in the office and in daycare. If you want your child to attend summer daycare, you must sign up; we have limited space available. PS3 and under, if you didn’t return the blue / green sheet with your choice, please confirm with Ms. Heidi or Connie in the office to make sure you are on the list.

FREDDY’S NIGHT is Thursday, April 29 from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. All you have to do is have dinner at Freddy’s! When the cashier is ready to take your order, tell them you are there in support of First Lutheran School, and Freddy’s will donate 15% of your purchases (on that day, during those hours) on dine-in, carryout and drive-thru orders (sorry, not valid with online/delivery orders). Tell your friends, family, neighbors, and complete strangers. It doesn’t cost you anything more than the cost of your dinner!

CHAPEL OFFERINGS FOR THE 4TH QUARTER will be going to assist Camp Lutherhoma in Tahlequah.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE… HELP US FIND THE RIGHT PERSON FOR YOUR KIDS: – First Lutheran School is looking for help in daycare, for the summer and for the school year. In addition to being 18 or older, able to be fingerprinted and pass a background test, applicants also need to have a positive attitude, be dependable, and have a personality, language, and behavior (and facebook page) that is appropriate when working with children. They need to be physically able to pick up small children to change diapers and as needed, and be willing to work with children of all ages. You may direct questions to Ms. Heidi Daley on FastDirect or at 580-762-1124 or by calling the school office at 580-762-9950, stop by the school or daycare office to get an application, or print your own at www.fastdir.com/flcspc under the “links” tab on the left. Please pass the word to relatives, neighbors, college students, etc. who you think would work well with children.

SCHOOL OFFICE—TAX STATEMENTS: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2020 for tax purposes, you can print them off by logging into your FastDirect account, click on the “finances” button on the top, click on “tax report” on the left-hand side, then choose the year you want and click on “Tax Year Printout”. It will bring up a page to print with your payments to First Lutheran categorized and totaled, and it will have our Federal Tax I.D. number on the top (it’s 73-6083110).

You can also request a tax statement from the office by calling 580-762-9950 or sending a FastDirect email to Connie Erickson. This will include school-related expenses only; summer daycare tax statements must be requested from daycare by sending a FastDirect email to Heidi Daley or calling daycare at 580-762-1124. Not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot.

A BEST FRIEND HAPPENING is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2021, 8am-11:30am for all the mothers, grandmothers, daughters, & friends. This event is sponsored by LWML. Mark your calendars and see details below.

RE-ENROLLMENT REMINDER: Are you coming back in August?! We need to know! Enrollment is now open to the public for next school year! Attached to a prior Chatter were your enrollment papers for the 2021/2022 school year; you can print an additional copy from the “links” tab on FastDirect, or stop by the office to get a new one. To hold your students’ spot for next school year, be sure to return your enrollment forms and 1/3 of the enrollment fee (if applicable). We are still limiting class sizes due to COVID, and some classes were already full this year, so please don’t wait until the last minute to let us know if you plan to return next year.

If you know a family new to First Lutheran School that is interested in enrolling, have them call the school office for enrollment information. If they have a student in 1st – 6th grades, make sure to ask them to list you as a referring family on their enrollment sheet. If they remain enrolled through the first semester, in January of 2022 you will receive a $200 credit towards your tuition account! ELEVEN families earned credit in January just by referring friends!

LOCAL NEWS: Do you take the newspaper? If so, if there are pictures or articles about First Lutheran Students, and you aren’t keeping them for yourself, would you send the articles in to the office? We would love to keep extra copies in our scrapbook. Thanks!

Can I have your grocery receipts instead of trashing them?? Since the BoxTop program has gone virtual, we are missing out on BoxTop Rewards. If you are willing, after you go shopping for groceries, home, or office, could you (*) put your receipt in the black box in front of the office, (*) bring them to Connie in the office and I can scan it and give it right back, or (*) put them in an envelope addressed to “Connie – office” and put it in your child’s backpack / take home folder / have them give it to their teacher? I’ll scan them with the BoxTop App, and then I will trash them or return them via your child (if you write your name on the receipt). Don’t worry about checking to see if there are any applicable products in your cart—it just takes a second to scan it, and if we get nothing, at least we tried.

BUT…sometimes there are BoxTop Rewards associated with non-food items like Ziploc, Hefty, Paper Mate, etc. You (2)

just never know, so it’s worth a shot! Of course, you can download the app yourself and scan the receipts if you would rather. Thank you!

OH! We always would like to use the numbers on the bottom of your Staples receipts to get extra Staples rewards for the school. In addition to you putting the receipt in for your own rewards; they’ll apply the Rewards to both your account and to a registered school! I just need the barcode and total spent.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: We have not heard from the high school if we will be allowed on their track this year for our May 7 track meet. We have not invited the other Lutheran schools to attend because of the pandemic, but we are planning on hosting our own field day events from 10 to 2 on that day with our own students in 1st through 8th grade. Please make plans to help. We greatly appreciate it.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: This week in Preschool we are learning all about the letter L and the sound it makes as well as reviewing all the skills we have learned. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Great job reading at home for our spring reading challenge! Don't forget to fill out the reading slips and return them to school for our bulletin board. Keep practicing the letter names and sounds, we have some really close to being letter masters. Our Bible words this week are, Continue in what you have learned. 2 Timothy 3:14 Have a Blessed Week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Wow, the kindergarten class will soon be the first grade class! So, please keep working on those sight words and reading with your child. It will be over before you know it! Thank you parents for sharing your kids with me this year, I have enjoyed being with them! Have a sensational week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory for Friday is the 7th Commandment - You shall not steal. Here are some upcoming dates to put on your calendar. I am planning a 1st grade field trip on Friday, April 30 starting at 11:00. Details to come later! We will have a school wide track meet on Friday, May 7 that you can join us for the day. Have a wonderful week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Easter Greetings! Praising God that this season lives on in our lives! We've been redeemed. We're busily preparing to be excellent test takers. We're making great progress in AR. Half of our class has already reached their goal! This week's spelling words are abbreviations. I'm pretty sure we'll have many perfect spelling tests on Friday. Memory work is Matthew 28:19-20. Keep us in your prayers as we are testing next week. Blessings!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: The countdown is on! I believe the kids said less than 25 days left of this school year. We have been so blessed to be in person and able to learn together. I have seen so much growth in everyone. I cannot wait to see what the last 25ish days holds for us. This week: Memory – Psalms 150:6. Reading: Working on Charlotte’s Web. Math: Test on Friday and then no math for a week. Testing: Remember next week is testing week.

PLEASE get those notes to me by Friday. I want them at your child’s desk for the test on Monday. We will only test in the mornings. Please be on time and schedule any appointments for the afternoons. We will most likely test all week.

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: This Monday we set eggs in our incubator. It is a very eggciting time in 4th grade!

The eggpecgted hatching is the week of May 5th! April book orders are due tomorrow. Make sure we are communicating about the Wax Museum. Today was the day to have a person set in stone for this project for the end of the month. ITBS is next week! Continue to have the kids get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast before coming to school. Make sure you are on time, testing starts right away! Please bring in a healthy snack for your student to help them focus during testing. If you wish to provide a snack for the class please let me know what day. Water is also needed for the classroom if you are able to donate. Make sure you are using Fast Direct to see if students have missing work. It is never a good idea to have late work! Blessing as we focus on Christ to serve the Lord.

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Next week we will be Iowa testing. Therefore, there will be no regular spelling or reading unit, which also means no tests. Today we took language test 7 and yesterday was social studies test 5. Enjoy the beautiful spring weather. Blessings!

MIDDLE SCHOOL F.L.Y. – Mrs. Heitman: 5:30-7:30, Meet in the Youth House for dinner/devotions, Pickup at the gym.

8TH GRADE PARENTS – MRS. SCOTT: if you have not already, please turn in the amount owed for our 8th grade trip.

Checks can be made out to FLS. Message me if you don’t remember your amount owed. We will have our last trip meeting on Thursday, April 22, at 6pm in my math classroom. I need at least one person per vehicle to be present at the meeting. We leave a week from Monday! I am so excited for this trip!

Mrs. Scott: 5th Grade Math went out of order on a few lessons. We finished Lesson 73 and Lesson 75 on Tuesday. We will finish Lesson 74 on Thursday. Please look at the grade book in FastDirect. If your student has a missing grade, please have them complete the assignment and bring it to class with them.

6R Math is working with area of rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids.

6A/7R Math is working with the pythagorean theorem.

7A has been reviewing for their next math test. The test will be taken THIS Thursday.

8R Math took their Chapter 8 Test yesterday. We began Chapter 9 today.

Personal Finance – Mrs. Scott: HUGE thank you to our Fire Department! We had several firefighters and paramedics come speak with our finance classes. Jacob Harbeson talked to our students about the plumbing trade and the steps to take to become an apprentice and journeyman. Tracy Shields talked with our students about how to run and operate a self-employed business. The kids truly enjoy the change of pace with having guest speakers. We have several more trades scheduled to talk with the kids!

Mrs. Hanson: 6th grade is naming chemical compounds, solving chemical equations, and performing chemical reactions. We will quiz this Friday.

7th grade is rising up through the atmosphere, drawing diagrams of the layers, and will be creating a paper-slide video to demonstrate their knowledge of Earth's atmosphere. Quiz Friday.

BOTH 7TH and 6TH GRADE- I am planning some field trips for both classes to go on together the week of April 26.

Since 8th grade is gone and we haven't been able to do any field trips this year, I would love to take these 2 classes to OKC to the bombing memorial and Science Museum and to the salt mines and Cosmosphere with an overnight at the Cosmosphere. I am also planning a virtual STEM lab through iFLY for the week. We will need parent drivers/chaperones and there will be an individual cost for each student. Right now we are looking at a total of $80. More details will come out with a permission slip when things get solidified.

8th grade is loving genetics and will quiz this Friday.

Ms. Kester: It's test time for History students! Friday is the day. In the interim, they will have taken advantage of in-class foci sessions, reviews, and study times. Also, G8 is hard at work on their field trip presentations while they gear up for their guest speaker Monday afternoon who "had an extensive career in federal government operations and policy making."* This guest is perfect for our Civics unit and will be a wealth of real-world information for your eighth grader.

As for G7, they are completing their Oklahoma research papers due Friday. G6, however, has been ahead of the game since they wrapped up their pairs projects already. Good job to them!

A big thank-you to Kylie for leading G6 in Religion class Monday! She has a speaking gift, for sure, as do many of her sixth-grade peers. They will ease into the story of Joseph the rest of this week while G7 navigates the incredible plagues Pharaoh and Egypt underwent for refusing to let God's people go. Eighth graders are staying busy prepping Christian devotions for their annual school trip taking place this month. They will lead all aspects of the nightly gatherings; for they are true leaders in every way. They can't wait to get this party started. Road trip!

In French, students will dive into calendar words and topics as a first step to their upcoming in-class project due this month. As this requires a counting ability up to 31, they will advance in numbers as well. Lastly, remind your students to rest up for next week's ITBS testing, as they close out the mid-quarter period. I hope your week has been treating you well. The final quarter of the school year is chugging right along, and it will be May before we know it! For 8 th grade, I have two dates for you. Friday, April 23 will be the day for our OSU trip. Friday, May 14, will be 8th grade Skip Day. More information on both trips will be sent home in an email to both students and parents.

Next week is ITBS week. We will be testing Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday mornings from 8:45 to 10:45. It would be best for your student if appointments and things such as these not to be scheduled during these mornings. All students will need to bring several #2 pencils and a calculator for certain parts of the math tests.

In language, all classes are busily reading their 4th quarter novels. 8th grade is working on college reports, as well.

Final reports are due Monday, May 3 by 11:59 p.m. (They will be submitting them through GoogleClassroom.) Monday the 3rd is also their first day back from their Mount Rushmore trip. To encourage students to complete and submit their reports BEFORE they leave on their trip, I will be giving extra credit if reports are submitted by Sunday, April 25, at 11:59 p.m. I have encouraged all students to take advantage of this extra credit opportunity.

NEXT WEEK!!!!

April 19-23, is ITBS Testing Week for Grades 2-8 in the mornings!

What can you do to help your student be ready for testing week? Plenty!  Make sure your student has a healthy breakfast! It’s hard to do your best thinking when your tummy is growling! Remember, we offer nutritious breakfasts in the cafeteria each morning between 7:45 – 8:05 a.m. for $2.25.  Please avoid any doctor/dentist/etc. appointments during the morning hours. It is a tremendous distraction to your student, as well as the other students in the class, to have students pulled out during the middle of a test.  Students should have 5 sharpened pencils WITH an eraser (not mechanical).  Testing typically starts at 8:30 a.m. sharp, so please be sure your student is on time. A tardy student is a distraction to a whole class of testing students; a great way to avoid this, would be to be on time! As a reminder, classroom doors open at 8:10 a.m. each morning, and school begins/attendance is taken at 8:20 a.m. Students who arrive tardy will be admitted to their classrooms after the current test is finished.

Long story short: eat a healthy breakfast, be on time, and don’t check out early! Thanks for your cooperation!
