First Lutheran Church & School’s 10th Annual Christmas MARKET OKLAHOMA FESTIVAL, will be held THIS Saturday, Dec. 4th, 2021, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the church & school campus. We invite you to stop by, grab lunch, and do some Christmas shopping with many unique vendors all in one place!

Gently used Christmas items - The 8th grade will have a booth at the Christmas Market THIS SATURDAY, December 4, and is collecting Christmas items to sell; proceeds will go to the 8th grade trip. If you have items to donate, please bring them to the school office or the 8th grade classroom. THANK YOU!!!

STUDENT COUNCIL – Mrs. Harbeson: Your First Lutheran Student Council members have been hard at work planning some special events to wrap up our first semester!

FLS Student Council Coat Drive, December 6 – 10: Brrr...it's chilly out there! The FLS student council is holding a coat drive and we need you! Help families stay warm this winter by donating your clean, gently-used coats to those in need. All sizes are needed. All coats collected will be delivered to the KFOR Warmth for Winter program in OKC. To make your donation a little easier, you may drop off your coats between 7:50 - 8:20 the week of December 6-10 by pulling into the drop-off line next to the middle school on 4th Street. A student council member will collect your coats right from your car! Help us make a difference for those who are in need!

FLS STUDENT COUNCIL MOVIE NIGHT!: On Friday, December. 17, The Polar Express will be shown in the gym as a Student Council fundraiser. Popcorn, puppy chow, and hot chocolate will be provided with your $5 ticket. Tickets are available in the office or from StuCo representatives. See attached flyer for more information.

COLLECTING PONCA CITY SANTA BUCKS: First Lutheran is collecting the Santa Shops Ponca 1st tickets that are given out at participating local businesses each time you make a purchase during (1)

the Christmas season. If you are willing to donate yours to the school, please drop them by the school on or before December 20th. You can also place them in the black mailbox in front of the Administration Building. In the event that we win something, if you want to know if it was from your ticket, please write your name on the back of the strip of tickets & we’ll let you know!

Mr. Birnbaum: Less than 3 weeks left in this quarter, semester, and until Christmas break. Keep encouraging your child to do their best during these busy times.

DAYCARE – Ms. Vap: Before & After School Parents - We use the Brightwheel app while your child is in our care before school from 7:00am to 8:10am and after school from 3:10pm until our last pickup time at 5:15pm. Please remember to sign your child in and out with your code using the kiosk or with your phone. If you need any help, please don't hesitate to ask myself or Heidi.

DAYCARE PARENTS - Please be sure to send shoes & coats as we will still go outside when possible. MUSIC  – Mrs. Brey: The elementary students are working so hard on their singing and speaking parts for the Christmas program! I'm so excited for you to hear and see them on Thursday, December 9 th at 6:30pm. The middle school students have projects that are due on December 9th: 6th grade has a melody project, and 7th and 8th grade have a program project. All of these are posted on Google Classroom for students to view.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Daine: Thank you to the families that have sent books for our classroom!! The children are enjoying them immensely. If you have not already, please send a change of clothes for the colder weather, and make sure your child has a jacket/coat. Have a blessed rest of the week!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! This week we will be learning all about the letters M, T, and G. We will also be making some Christmas crafts! Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Our thoughts and prayers for healing go out to Mrs. Kelly’s father as he deals with health issues. Please be sure to thank the substitutes who are filling in for her while she is away.

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Thank you to all the awesome grandparents that came to "Grandparents' Day".

The Christmas program is coming up on Thursday, December 9th at 6:30 pm. Also, we will have a gift exchange in our classroom. Boys buy for a boy and girls buy for a girl with about a $10.00 limit. Please wrap the gift with Christmas paper or a Christmas bag and write to a Girl or Boy (and from your child's name). Our class party will be on Friday the 17 th at 10:00 am and then we will get out early at 11:10 for Christmas break. Sorry, but parents can't come because of COVID (someday I hope this changes). Have a sensational week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Happy December! It's hard to believe that we only have two and half weeks left to this semester! Thank you to those of you who purchased books from the book fair for our classroom! We love having new books to read! November reading logs for Book It are due by the end of the week and December reading logs were sent home today. We will be having a gift exchange for our Christmas party. Boys can bring a boy gift and girls bring a girl gift. Please just put who the gift is from. The cost of the gift should be around $10. The Christmas program is coming up on Thursday, December 9 at 6:30. Memory for this week is Matthew 28:19 - Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the reason for the season!!

SECOND GRADE – Ms. Felton: December is here and Christmas is just around the corner!! Our Christmas program with the elementary grades is on December 9, so mark your calendars now - I am so excited to celebrate Christ Jesus' birth with you in this way! In class, we will be doing a number of Christmas-themed activities. There are some supplies that you can donate if you are able - the list will come with the newsletter this Friday. Memory is still on both Tuesday and Friday, and this Friday is Luke 2:4-6. End of semester tests will include a Little House in the Big Woods project due December 15 (information and rubric coming this week) and an addition test over sums 0 to 20 also on December 15. Our science focus will be engineering, and social studies will continue to tie into Little House in the Big Woods. Please order or borrow the book "Little House in the Big Woods" if you have not yet, as we are scheduled to use it right up to Christmas break, and the students will be completing a project using it!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Thank you to all the grandparents that came to Grandparents Day. We had a great time and the kids did AMAZING in our performance. Now, on to the Christmas Musical. We have been practicing all our songs and the kids sound great. Cannot wait to see it on stage next week. This week: Book Report: LOOK AMAZING! Thank you so much for all your time and effort on these. The kids were so excited to show them off to everyone. Memory: 5th Commandment and meaning due by Friday. Next week is the 6th Commandment and meaning.

Kids have been doing great with these. Reading: Test on Friday, along with spelling. Math: Test on Friday. Science: We (2)

have started a new chapter on Matter. We will be working on in class project. Look for a test before Christmas. Social Studies: We have a few more Indian tribes to go. Look for a test before Christmas. A.R. We have 2 more weeks to get our goals. We have 9 more classmates that need to reach their goals. Please ask your child where they are. Christmas Party: be on the lookout for information regarding our party. Have a wonderful week!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: I hope that you all had a blessed Thanksgiving, and a well rested break. Good food, loved ones, and a break from the normal routine to give thanks and prepare for the coming of the Lord will always equal a fantastic time! Are you using secret weapons for children’s school? The planner, folder, Friday Letter, & Fast Direct! This will tell you everything you need to know about your child’s school day when it’s filled out, and papers put in appropriate folders. Don’t forget FD shows grades. These are vital parts to being in tune with what kids do in school.

Please make sure that planners are signed nightly. Keep reading for AR! Some are doing great & are close to making goals; some need some good reading time to catch up. The region to study is the Southeast. The test is TBA. We sing in church on the 12th, and have our CHRISTmas program on the 9th! Continue to think of the things that God has richly blessed us with, in this season. Blessing as we count our gifts from God, as we share them with others.

5th Grade & Middle School 5th GRADE RELIGION – Mrs. Brey: Merry Christmas! The students have set up the Christmas tree in our classroom, and it adds such a great touch. For religion, students will be creating a final project, and it will be due on Monday, December 13th. Students also have the opportunity to create additional projects to receive extra credit, which will be due on the 14th. We will be having a quiz this coming Friday (December 3), and students will get the study guide for it on Wednesday morning. We will not have time to go over the study guide in class, so they will need to fill it out on their own time in order to study. And finally, no memory work for the rest of the semester due to the Christmas program which is on Thursday, December 9th at 6:30pm. See you there!!

5TH GRADE MATH – Mr. Birnbaum: Advanced math is finishing up the first half of the book. Working hard on percents. Regular math is working on factoring. All students need to keep working on multiplication facts which will help tremendously on long division.

Middle School Winter Dance, Friday, February 25, 7-9:00 p.m.

6th – 8th MATH – Mr. McKinley: We started doing some math on IXL last week in order to have another way to facilitate learning.

6th and 7th are finishing up Chapter 5 this week with division of fractions and mixed numbers, US measurements, and conversion of measurements.

7th and 8th are preparing for the Chapter 5 test that will be on Thursday. Chapter 5 test on page 262 will be very beneficial for studying.

SCIENCE – Mrs. Porter-Cain: I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving! Happy Birthdays this week go out to Kinley (Nov 30th) and John (Dec 3rd) Science classes are finishing the semester out with PROJECTS! 5th Grade- Moon Phases/Planets 6th Grade- Plant Cells 7th Grade- Solar System 8th Grade- Animal Cells The kids have started their research and seem to be enjoying it so far!

PE Classes will be playing Ball tag this week!

Health Science- we will be making up missing assignments!

Basketball- Attached is an updated schedule- get out and watch your Cardinals and Lady Cardinals this season!

LANGUAGE – Ms. Kester: It is great to be back with the students and staff! We only have a few more weeks before we’re “breaking” again, so students are busy reading the rest of their AR books, starting IXL in grammar, getting (3)

ready to “cozy up” to lesson 4 vocabulary, and digging into Matthew 1-2 and its history to bring the Bible story to life and prepare their hearts for the season that is upon us.

More specifically for AR books, eighth graders are whipping up a student-created humbug play inspired by “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. They have playwrights, prop masters, producers, and a director. Even a sound person, choreographer, and script supervisor are included. And, of course, there are actors. It’s set for the classroom instead of a stage, as this will serve as a test grade for literature. So, don’t call grandma and grandpa for this one. Just know that (1) there will be no quizzes or tests for this book, and (2) your eighth grader will be preparing for and talking about his or her role in the play until they present it to me December 14.

Seventh graders are finishing The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, and they are all kinds of excited about dressing up as one of the characters for our Christmas class party. So, they will be preoccupied with costuming as well as preparing for quizzes based on the book. The latter will commence December 6, which is right around the corner. They received their books before the break, and many have taken advantage of the reading time I have given them in class. I will send their quiz schedule via Fast Direct.

Sixth graders are being serenaded by their book The Music of Dolphins. They, too, will take quizzes that cover the reading, as well as receive a quiz schedule. Their first quiz will be December 6. Fifth graders are enjoying The Christmas Box before moving on to Nutcracker and Mouse-King. They will write about both books for literature grades in lieu of taking quizzes.

So, we have some engaging things to accomplish and some wonderful people to do them with, for sure! Know that there are no reading logs this week, but they will resume the following week. Lastly, if you are able to donate water bottles or chocolate to the middle school for the students’ weekly futon drawing, then drop them off to me or in the office to Connie. The kids will greatly appreciate you!

SOCIAL STUDIES – Mr. Brey: 5th Grade: Students have been learning where states are and we are continuing to learn about our government and early challenges our nation had.

6th Grade: Students are working on an African Kingdom project. This will last the rest of the week with presentation lasting until hopefully Monday.

7th Grade: We are exploring the Renaissance period in Europe. This will continue for the rest of the week.

8th Grade: We are continuing our Westward Expansion unit. This will conclude two weeks from now.

We have outside recess every day, and some mornings are getting pretty cool. Please remember to send a jacket with your student to school eVERY day! Also, please, please, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them on the playground!
