Praise God we don't have anything to report on the Covid front but wanted to let you know that we did Lock-Down our classrooms last Wednesday afternoon while the events transpired at the High School. We closely monitored the situation and based decisions off of information from local authorities.

Congratulations to Susie & Chris Manning on one year of wedded bliss. Thank you again for sharing your special day with the staff and students here at First Lutheran Church & School!

JOKE OF THE WEEK: Q: Why does Humpty Dumpty love autumn? A: Because he always has a great fall.

FLS NEEDS YOU!: We need subs! Not every-single-day, but people who can save us when we have staff that get sick, have to leave with sick children, etc. We need subs for teachers, teachers’ aids, cafeteria, computer, etc. You can volunteer or be paid for subbing, and if you have plans the day we call, you can always say no. You can even specify what jobs or days you are available/not available and for which grades you will or won’t do. If you, and aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc. are willing to be on our sub list, please contact the office with their details.

Monster Mash will be Saturday, October 30 with Trunk-or-Treat from 4:00-6:00, Games from 6:00-7:30, dance (for all ages) 7:30 – 9:00. Costume Judging & Class Pumpkin winners announced at 8 p.m. Please help your class Room Parent with working your game / getting supplies.

LIFT CHAIR: If you know someone who is in need of a SMALL lift chair, we know someone who has a blue one to give away. Please contact the school office if you are interested.

ELECTRIC WHEEL CHAIR: - Does anyone have an electric wheel chair that they would be willing to sell?

CHRISTMAS MARKET: First Lutheran Church and School has begun making plans for the 10th Annual CHRISTMAS MARKET OKLAHOMA FESTIVAL, which will be held Saturday, December 4th, 2021, on the church and school campus. We are inviting all vendors and crafters to participate. If you are interested and need to receive further information, please contact the church or school office or call Shirley (580-761-4657).

1ST QUARTER CHAPEL OFFERINGS: Chapel offerings this quarter will be used to continue First Lutheran School’s sponsorship of Victor and Rosario; children that we have “adopted” through Compassion International. Our sponsorship provides medical checkups, nutritious food, health and hygiene training, educational assistance, access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief, and mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God’s children. Most important of all, they will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. Please pray for them daily, and be generous with your chapel donations so that we can continue our sponsorship of children who are not as fortunate as we are.

BOXTOPS: We can’t clip them anymore; we have to scan receipts via the BoxTop app. If you would drop your grocery / office supply receipts 1) in the black mailbox in front of the administration building or 2) put them in your child’s backpack, they will get them to the office where we will scan them and then throw them away or return them, whichever you prefer. If you get electronic receipts (think WalMart grocery pickup), please forward those to Connie at lutheransecretary@yahoo.com, and I can send them in through my account. Thank you!

KELLOGGS is doing the FREE BOOK offer again. If you purchase Kellogg’s cereal in the next month, and aren’t participating yourself, please send your grocery receipt to Connie in the office so that she can scan it and order the new books for the school library. I can return your receipt to you or throw it away; whatever you prefer.

INK & TONER RECYCLING: Help us keep your costs down! If you have a new or used ink or toner cartridge that you are done with, please send them with your student and the teachers will get them to the office. We recycle these and earn credit on the supplies that the school purchases each month. THANK YOU for your help with this!

MR. BIRNBAUM: Thank you to the half of the Kindergarten & First grade classes that came to sing for our Church Service Sunday - Sep. 12. I am so excited to see & hear our PS-PK perform THIS SUNDAY - Oct. 10 at the 9:00 service. This brings so much JOY to our worship especially for the older members to see these angelic faces.

We are still waiting on quite a few work/school schedules for those who are DHS subsidy contracted. Please turn those in to us as soon as possible.

MUSIC – Mrs. Brey: Our composer of the month is George Gershwin. He was a piano player and a jazz icon. To start learning about him, middle school students will be using laptops to learn about Gershwin and play a game revolving around him. Second through fifth grade will be listening to music and writing/drawing what they hear.

Kindergarten and first grade have started learning about the instruments in jazz music and will continue learning them and listening to more of Gershwin's music. Preschool students are singing THIS SUNDAY, October 10th, at 9am at First Lutheran Church. See you there!

LIBRARY – MRS. MANNING: Do you have any cookbooks laying around the house not in use? The kids love to look through them, and the few that we have are always checked out, and they are “hungry” for something new! If you would be willing to donate them, our students would appreciate it so much. Thank you to Ms. Cargal for her donation of cookbooks this week; the kids are already “eating” them up!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Daine: Oh happy day!! The Lord is good! I hope you are enjoying the cooler mornings as much as I am! Please remember to send in your permission slips for our field trip. As stated in the letter that went home with your child, if you cannot go with your child, you will need to make other arrangements. Not all of our class is potty trained, what a day that would be if I had to take all 8 of our class to the potty by myself, lol!!! Have a blessed rest of the week!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: This week we are learning the letters E, K, and J. The children will be singing in church this Sunday. Our field trip to the pumpkin patch is next Wednesday, Please return permission slips along with the fee for the pumpkin patch. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Happy Birthday Vash! With the chilly mornings please remember to send a jacket with your child's name in it. We have morning recess and walk to the cafeteria for lunch. Show and Tell is Tomorrow! Field trip permission slips and money were due today. Please send those tomorrow, if you haven't. Please remember to mark your calendars for this Sunday, October 10th. We will be singing at church. Please arrive by 9:00 a.m. Your child will sit with you until time to sing and come back to you after. Our October book order is due to me or online by Friday. I use the points we earn for orders to purchase books, toys, and manipulatives for our classroom.

Thank you for ordering! I hope you are reading with your child every day and coloring the days picture on the calendar. Our Bible words this week are, Beloved, we are Gods children now. 1 John 3:2 We started our first letter cluster Aa, Ss, Mm, and the number 1 this week. Have a Blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Happy birthday Declan! Field trip forms with money were due today! This week we have been working on letter "Aa". The kids are working hard on letters, sounds, reading and math. We are very excited about our pumpkin field trip next week on the 13th. Have a sensational week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is Matthew 22:37 - You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Field trip forms and money were due today. If you have not turned them in yet, please do so by tomorrow. Information for the Pizza Hut Book It program was sent home last week. You will need to approve your student's participation by going to the website or scanning the QR code. You also received a reading log for your child to color in the days that they read for 10 minutes. These will be turned in at the end of the month to get the award of a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Parent teacher conferences are coming up after Fall Break. You can sign up for your time on Class Tag. We are looking forward to our field trip next Wednesday! Have a great week!

SECOND GRADE – Ms. Felton: Boy, time is flying! It’s almost the end of the first quarter!! AR goals should be met by the end of the quarter (October 14). Fall break follows that - October 15-18. Parent teacher conferences are also coming up, so be on the lookout for a FastDirect/spreadsheet with available times for that! I am in the process of finalizing a field trip! November 5, 2021 will be the date that we go to Leonardo’s in Enid, OK. Keep an eye on your child’s red folder for permission slips. I also signed up our class for Pizza Hut BookIt rewards - I set it up so that your child needs to read and take AR tests on 10 books each month in order to earn the reward. Next week is our +3 assessment in math. We will do a science activity/project in class that will be our assessment for this unit on matter (gas, liquid, solid). We have some fun fall/Halloween classroom activities coming up this month!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Can you believe we are almost done with the first quarter?! Please check on your child's grades, they are all up to date and current. They will be shut off next week, so if you have any questions please let me know. This week: Memory: New Testament Books of the Bible- Matt. through Colossians. Next week we will do all the New Testament books. After fall break we will move on to the 10 Commandments and their meanings.

Reading: Penguin Chick with a test and paragraph this week. Spelling: test on Friday. Science: Test yesterday over warm-blooded animals. A project has been sent home. This is due next week! After fall break we will move on to plants. Social Studies: We will be finishing up the continents and will be moving on after fall break. A.R. - We have 7 more kids to meet their A.R. goals. Please check in with your child and ask where they are. The kids are so close.

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: See you Monday with your apron and spoons to bake for the Lord so we may prep for Rose Hill on Tuesday! If you have not sent in your permission slip and money yet please do so tomorrow!

There may not be enough time to have a check ready if all the money is not in on time. This is the last full week before grades are finalized for the first quarter. Scholars should be reading their AR books nightly for success. It really helps when we take the book home at night! The last day to make AR goals is October 14th. That is only a few days away; to make a goal that students helped to set. Continue to go over assignments with students for simple mistakes. This makes a big difference for academic understanding & retention of material. Some are not being careful with turning in assignments on time. Completing work on time is a large part for success along with proper organization. Fast Direct is a great tool to see how scholars are doing. Look for the appointment sheet for Parent Teacher Conferences coming in the school mail soon. Keep Reading, and Peace as we Praise God. (3)

5th Grade & Middle School EIGHTH GRADE PARENTS! DO NOT FORGET WE HAVE A DC MEETING ON WEDNESDAY EVENING!!

PRETTY PLEASE?!!! If your student has had the Covid shot(s), can you please use your phone to take a picture of their card and send it to Connie at lutheransecretary@yahoo.com (or bring one to the office to copy)? I need to track that, along with their immunizations. When your child moves to the high school, that information will move with them, and be one less thing you have to provide. Thank you to everyone who has sent/brought them in already!

BASKETBALL – Official Grade check is end of quarter report cards! If you have questions, please contact me! Season will be starting quickly!!

FIFTH GRADE RELIGION – Mrs. Brey: Memory work is due on Friday, October 8th. Our memory verses that are due are Exodus 20:2-3. We will continue to go over the Ten Commandments over the next few weeks. We have started our new unit and will continue to talk about Jesus' earthly ministry.

5th GRADE MATH – Mr. Birnbaum: Only 6 days of school left this quarter and the students are working hard.

Some would do A LOT better in division if they knew more of the larger multiplication facts.

MATH – Mr. McKinley: Chapter 2 tests are in the books and we are on to chapter 3.

6th and 7th are working on data and statistics in relationship to averages and different types of graphing and plotting possibilities and deciphering the results.

7th and 8th are moving deeper into PreAlgebra with multistep equations and inequalities.

SCIENCE – Mrs. Porter-Cain: The quarter is almost coming to a close! The nine weeks has flown by and fall is starting to come upon us!

5th Grade Science- will be finishing strong in their weather unit! Test on Friday of this week!

6th Grade Science- will test on Genetics and traits on TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK! 6th grade can say the Apostles' Creed for an extra credit opportunity!

7th Grade Science- we are still working on Atoms, Ions, and Elements!

8th Grade Science- INSECT PROJECTS are due on the 12th! The students will be presenting them on the 13th and th 14 ! They have to represent 7 orders and need at least two specimens per order! Please make sure they are preparing themselves! They need a foam poster board and sewing pins as well!

Health Science- we are continuing with our exploration of the respiratory system!

2nd – 4th PE this week we are playing Bombs Away!

5th – 8th – We are doing different forms of basketball inspired games (Horse, knockout, etc) LANGUAGE – Ms. Kester: Howdy, all! I'm keeping things short and sweet this week with the following rundown for all my classes: Friday, October 8 - Literature tests in English class, new AR books, and memory work Wednesday, October 13 - Vocabulary/spelling tests Thursday, October 14 - Grammar tests Then, we're on to the second quarter, folks . . . and more of harvest season! Most of my students have their thoughts on Halloween and truckloads of candy at this time, but I love the smell of pumpkin pancakes and the beauty of the Lord's creative display of colorful leaves. I hope you find beauty in your days during this time of the year and enjoy the awesome weather that this season brings.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Mr. Brey: 5th Grade: Looking like we will have a test late next week. 8th Grade will be in class on Friday to help teach them about the American Revolution 6th Grade: We will continue to learn about ancient cultures. Maybe a quiz early next week depending on how well students learn.

7th Grade: Honestly had a really impressive week. We are ahead of schedule and will continue to look at various cultures in the Eastern Hemisphere.

8th Grade: Very impressed academically with the 8th grade class with the more intense schedule. We will learn about the foundation of our government and the bill of rights next week.

NEWS FROM FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH

We have outside recess every day, and some mornings are getting pretty cool. Please remember to send a jacket with your student to school eVERY day! Also, please, please, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them on the playground!
