DAYCARE SIGN-UPS, FEBRUARY 14 AND 17: School will be closed February 14 for Curriculum Writing and February 17 for President’s Day. Sign-up sheets are in the daycare lobby now; if you think you will need daycare those days, please sign-up so that we will have enough staff on hand for all of the kiddo’s!

HONOR BAND– Mr. Farmer!: Our very own Kyle King (8th), along with others, will perform Saturday, February 1st with the Honor Band in Tonkawa at the Kinzer Performing Arts Center at NOC at 2:00 pm. The public is invited to attend!

4TH GRADE will be performing in the Orff Music Festival this Saturday, February 1, at 2:30 in the new Concert Hall by the high school. Please come and support our FLS Students!

SCHOOL RE-EVALUATION: Every five years we go thru a thorough self-evaluation of our entire school program and then a visiting team of six professionals will come in October to verify our findings. If you would like to help serve on this process, please contact Principal Birnbaum.

This week we'll be serving at the Friendship Feast!

SCHOOL OFFICE—TAX STATEMENTS: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2017 for tax purposes, you can print them off by logging into your FastDirect account, click on the “finances” button on the top, click on “tax report” on the left-hand side, then choose the year you want and click on “Tax Year Printout”. It will bring up a page to print with your payments to First Lutheran categorized and totaled, and it will have our Federal Tax I.D. number on the top.

Alternatively, you can request a tax statement from the office by calling 580-762-9950 or sending a FastDirect email to Connie Erickson. This includes school-related expenses only; summer daycare statements must be requested from daycare by sending a FastDirect email to Heidi Daley or calling daycare at 580-762-1124. Not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot.

SNOW DAY NOTIFICATION: In the event that school may be cancelled due to inclement weather, we follow Ponca City Public Schools schedule FOR WEATHER-RELATED CANCELLATIONS ONLY. Listen to your radio during the cancellation announcements, and if Ponca City Schools are cancelled, First Lutheran will be out, also; however, there will NOT be a separate announcement for First Lutheran. This applies ONLY to weather-related cancellations; at all other times, follow the First Lutheran School Calendar. If you need a new calendar, go to www.fastdir.com/flcspc, click on the “links” tab on the left, and then click on “2017-2018 Calendar”, or stop by the school office for a new one.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: The final week of January is already upon us and registration papers are coming home so we can start planning for the next year. We will open registration up to you first and then to the rest of the public March 1st if there is room available.

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL: The ECE Classes are celebrating the 100th day of school with a can drive, trying to collect 100 cans or non-perishable food items for the church pantry. ECE classes please bring your donations to school on or before the 31st of January (this Friday!).

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: This week we are learning all about the letter T and the sound it makes. Book orders go out today, if you would like to order from scholastic please turn it in by Feb 7 th or you can do an online order as well.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: Happy Wednesday! Hope everyone has had a great week! We are learning the letter J,j this week and celebrating the 100th day of school. You can still send nonperishable food tomorrow for the church food pantry. Our goal is for our building to reach 100 items. We will count on Friday morning.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Please keep Mrs. Kelly in your prayers this week for health and healing; we love and miss you Mrs. Kelly!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: This week on Friday the 31st our class will celebrate 100 days of school. Your child can dress up on Friday like they are 100 years old if they would like to! We are also collecting cans or non-perishable food items to count to 100 on Friday for the church food pantry. If your child would like to bring a special show and tell this week on Friday they can-- (100 small items in a zip lock bag like m&m candies, pennies, cereal, something small you have at home and please help them count, etc.) Have a wonderful week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is 1 Timothy 1:15 - Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Thursday is our 100th day of school. Please bring your 100 snack items for our trail mix by tomorrow thanks! Canned goods can be brought by Friday. We will count our cans on Friday with the rest of the classes. We will have show and tell on Friday. Please bring a favorite Christmas present to share or a special memory. Book orders were sent home today. These are due next Thursday, Feb. 6. You may order online or send a check to me with your order.

THIRD GRADE - Coach Amanda (f/Mrs. Steichen): 3rd grade news! Thursday is the 100th day of school! Woohoo!

We have been making our way through Charlotte's web and will quiz over chapters 1-10 on Friday! We will also have our spelling test on Friday! Ask your kids how to use multiplication tables and ask them to explain a fraction! We will test over math on Thursday! We have been learning prefixes, suffixes, adverbs and their proper uses. We have been making grammar fun! In religion we have been studying about the gifts that God gives us and now we are learning how to use them well! We are rocking 3rd grade this quarter!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Have winter coats at the ready for the ever changing weather. See you ALL on Saturday at 2:30 for the Orff Festival at the Ponca City Concert Hall. It will be a great time! AMAZING job to all for sharing our love for others with KIDS HEART CHALLENGE. We are well on our way to meeting our goal! We are really going into material that requires time to think, process, and respond to more complex detailed questions. It is really necessary to be organized, study, & practice for what being asked of us. I am seeing amazing progress to make AR Goals early! Many have found that without nightly reading at home, it can be difficult to make our AR goal. Continue practicing the multiplication table; we are now doing long division & exponents that require exceptional math fluency. Help the kids to be patient with these specific & detailed processes. Keep studying for West region, the kids know of good materials. I am hearing good ideas for the Valentine’s boxes. WOW! FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Many 5th graders are very busy playing ball, rehearsing for plays, participating in karate, just to name a few extracurricular activities. We have a very talented class. I am glad that the kids can be a part of the community in different ways. I also know the schedules for these activities can be grueling for 10 and 11 yearolds, not to mention their parents! We continue to progress through 5th grade. Third quarter can be exhausting, not only participating in many events, but also learning almost all new material in school. I am here to support you as families. I try to balance the school work load and yet accomplish what needs be. If you have concerns or questions feel free to contact me. In religion we are learning about Gideon, and memorizing Psalm 23. Last week I mentioned that some students had late memory work. This week I'd like to say that many students know their memory work on time, and several have said it way ahead of schedule. Way to go, kids! It is a joy to serve you and be a part of the team of FLS. And finally, congratulations to Khloe and Adyn for participating in the Geography Bee last Wednesday. They both did an excellent job, and Adyn came in third. Blessings!

FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson: 5th grade will be covering lessons in their book about the engineering process. We have also had an engineer reach out and want to talk with our class, so this will be scheduled for sometime soon! If you or someone you know is also an engineer, it's never too late to let me know and talk with our class to inspire these young minds.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FUTURE WASHINGTON D.C. ATTENDEES: If you need to make payments to your D.C. account, please note that you cannot make payments with a credit card. We will, however, accept checks, cash, money orders, etc. Thank you.

STUDENT COUNCIL – Mrs. Harbeson: Meet our second semester student council representatives!

8th grade - Ava Wilson, Hudson Haas, and Kylie Flowers 7th grade - Reed Jackson, Emma Bickford, and Braden Barney 6th grade - London Pettigrew, Jasmine Sodowsky, Marshall Blackstar, and Colton Strange FLY NIGHT: All 6th-12th graders are invited to join us for FLY night every Wednesday from 5:30-7:00. We meet in the youth house for dinner and devotions, then head to the gym for games! Please have a ride available to pick you up at 7:00 pm.

WINTERJAM: Join us on Saturday, Feb 29th, for the WinterJam tour! All youth 6th-12th grade are invited to join us for this evening of Christian music and fellowship! The cost is $15 per person, this covers entry to the concert.

Dinner will be provided. We will leave First Lutheran at 2:00 and return around midnight. Thanks to our volunteer drivers, we have 20 seats available, but they’re filling up fast! If you’re interested in attending (or driving), please see Jennifer Heitman for more details. Due to the limited number of seats available, seats will NOT be reserved until permission slips and fees have been turned in. This will be a first come, first serve, basis.

Mrs. Scott: Math joke of the week: There’s a fine line between a numerator and a denominator. Only a fraction of the people will think this is funny. :) I hope everyone is having a fantastic week! General 6th Grade Math took their Chapter 7 Test and everyone did awesome! The kids have started Chapter 8 with using a protractor to find angles. Advanced 6th Grade/General 7th Grade Math took their Chapter 8 Test and also did awesome! The kids have started Chapter 9 with percents. Advanced 7 th Grade Math is reviewing for their Chapter 7 Test on Thursday. 8th Grade Algebra has been reviewing for their Chapter 6 Test which was taken today. Advanced Algebra has started Chapter 8 and is working on multiplication properties of exponents.

6th Grade Religion: Memory work due today was the Third Commandment and its meaning. Memory work due on 2/5 is the Fourth Commandment and its meaning.

Mrs. Hanson: Congratulations to all of our 8th grade student athletes who have finished their basketball career with First Lutheran School but whose future career is just now beginning. God has blessed you with some amazing talents; never forget where they came from, and we look forward to seeing what your future holds.

6th grade will have a couple of quizzes this week to make sure we understand states of matter or need to revisit and clarify any concepts. Vocab quiz Wednesday and content quiz Friday. Parents, please have your student demonstrate one or all of the gas laws to you using the simulator online and focusing on verbal communication/explanation skills.

7th grade had a test Tuesday; we will be moving on to the structure of the entire planet now that we know what it is made of. We will also be having a few discussions on other skills students think they need to be learning in school.

Parents, share your thoughts on other skills and concepts you believe would be beneficial to learn in a school setting other than our core subjects.

8th grade tested Tuesday over invertebrates, so the only natural progression would be to move on the studying vertebrates. We will do so after we have a genius hour and worm lab. Talk with our student about their genius hour activities.

Mr. Covert: We’re just about to end of January! I hope everybody is doing their best to stay healthy; there are a few things going about. Make sure to cover your cough and wash your hands!

Classes are moving right along. In 8th grade, we’re wrapping up the post-Civil War era and moving into the 1880’s-1900’s wave of immigrants, that a good number of us can trace our family tree back to. In 7th grade, we’re looking to wrap up our chapter on Southeast Asia this week. As for 6th grade, we’re finishing up the spread of Christianity through Europe before we get into the Dark Ages.

I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we move through this month and into a new one.

Mrs. Harbeson: Hello! I hope everyone is doing well this week! Congratulations to our 8th grade basketball players and cheerleaders as they played and cheered at their final game at FLS on Monday night! We love you and are so proud of the way you represent First Lutheran. We are busy in middle school with all sorts of activities and events happening before Spring Break. Be sure to check the Chatter calendar every week! All students have begun and are quizzing on their 3rd quarter novels. We are also working on writing persuasive paragraphs and well as working on our new grammar units. I pray that the rest of your week is good to you all!

by Coach Amanda Monday night we honored our 8th grade athletes! We are sad to see these kids go, but excited to see what the future holds for them!

We have outside recess every day, and some days are VERY cold.

Please send a jacket with your student to school EVERY DAY! Also, please make sure their name is in the

jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them! (If you cannot afford a jacket for your student, please contact the office, and we will get you in touch with an organization that can help.)
