Covid Update - Covid exposures are still keeping students away; but, praise God, we have had very few absences and have been able to remain open for face-to-face education. Please keep praying, safe, sanitized, and cautious.

REFER A FAMILY—GET CREDIT! 11 (eleven) school families received a tuition credit this week just for referring an enrolling family to First Lutheran School. How do you get this for yourself? We start taking public enrollments for next school year on March 1, so start talking about First Lutheran School now to your neighbors, relatives, parents sitting next to you at games, random strangers in line at the grocery store, etc.

Tell them when they enroll to be sure and list you as a referring family. If they enroll a 1st – 6th grader, stay enrolled through the first semester, and list you as referring them, in January of 2022 you will automatically receive a $200 tuition credit (or a percentage of that if they list more than one referring family). It’s that easy!

It’s the easiest way to lower your tuition in the month that your Christmas credit card bill arrives!

FLS MINI-CHEER: Mini-Cheer practices are being changed to Wednesday, January 27 and Thursday, January 28 from 3:30 – 4:30 in the gym basement/old cafeteria. Mini-Cheer will perform on Monday, February 1 at 2:30 at the pep rally, and again at the games on Tuesday, February 2. Please be on the stage at 4:30.

Middle School Track – Coach Amanda: I am looking for volunteers to help coach track! If you are interested, please contact Coach Amanda via FastDirect, or leave a message for her with the school office (762-9950).

2-PAYMENT TUITION REMINDER: If you opted to pay your tuition for the year in two payments, the second half payment is due THIS SUNDAY, January 31—in ½ a week. Please contact the office if you need to change plans.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES – First Lutheran Church is looking to hire a part time "administrative assistant" to work in the church office, Monday through Friday, 8:00-12:00. Ideal candidates will have good computer skills, positive attitude, self-motivated, dependable, and a willingness to learn. First Lutheran School is looking for part-time help in daycare. In addition to being fingerprinted and pass a background test, applicants also need to have a positive attitude, be dependable, have a personality, language, and behavior that is appropriate when working with children, be physically able to pick up small children to change diapers and as needed, and be willing to work with children of all ages.

We praise GOD for YOU! PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: We would like to welcome Levi to our class! This week we are learning all about the letter W and the sound it makes. We will be having our Valentine's Party on February 11 th. Please send 12 valentines with your child's name on them by Monday the 8th please. PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Brr! We are ready for some warm weather and sunshine! We have been learning about snow, ice, and arctic animals. I still have a couple of report cards that need to be returned. Please double check that you have signed and returned yours. February book orders are in folders today and are due back to me or online by Friday, February 5th. Thank you for sending snacks to refill our snack box. Our Bible words this week are, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." John 9:5 Our letter cluster this week is Ll, Kk,and Uu. We are learning the number 11.

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: On February 11th kindergarten will have a Valentine/100 day party! I would like everyone to bring their valentines by Friday, February 5th because this way the valentines can sit in the sacks and get all the germs off by our party day. We have 12 kids and I would like you to have your child address the valentine with their name only (From:______). This way the children can drop one valentine in each sack when they bring them. I am sorry but parents cannot come to our party (only one parent…our headroom parent). This is our school policy for this year.

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is 1 Timothy 1:15 - Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I can't believe that we are in the last week of January already! January reading logs for Book-It are due on Monday. We will have show and tell on Friday. Our theme for this week is to bring a favorite Christmas present or to share a favorite Christmas memory. A look ahead - Thursday, February 11 will be our 100th day of school and will also be our Valentine Party. The children can exchange Valentine's if you want to start working on them! Blessing on your week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: In Jeremiah 29:11 the Bible says, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." What a mighty God we serve who takes care of our every need now and in the future. Keep working on memory work. We're on the 4 th commandment and meaning this week. See my Fast Direct bulletin board if you've misplaced your copy at home. Several of us need quite a bit more practice at home. Blessings!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: THANK YOU Spec and family for the bottles of water. We greatly appreciate it!!

Be on the Look out: Mrs. Powell is missing a couple of reading books. These were sent home last year when we were in quarantine. Please look to see if you have one. This week: Spelling and Reading Test on Friday. Memory: Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Math: 10x facts quiz on Friday. Next week we will do 11s; flash cards, tents will be sent home next Monday. Please practice facts EVERY NIGHT; this will help your child master these facts. Science: Test tomorrow over states of matter; next unit is sound. Social Studies: We have two more tribes to learn about; look for a test in the next two weeks. Have a wonderful week!!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Our next Rose Hill Prep day is on the 28th to bake goodies for our big trip the next day! If you can help with the baking on the 28th please let me know ASAP to help with baking! Come prepared with spoons and aprons on! We are putting our final details in place for Rose Hill! Be prepared to leave the school no later than 8 am on Friday to begin a great Rose Hill day. We are working on long division now, with remainders. Continue to help the kids with the details, process, showing work, and questions kids have to ask themselves with long division.

Following directions is a good practice to have. They can do it! Keep practicing math facts and concepts. This helps to ensure that we have speed and accuracy for more difficult math problems, like the long division we are now doing. We are now really ramping up since we are working on being fifth graders and preparing for the future. Keep reading for AR! The States & Cap test MW is on Thursday the 4th! The kids know great tools to practice this and all regions. Remember to bring in your chapel money for Compassion International for Victor and Rosario. Peace as we serve the Lord.

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Last week I had the opportunity to ride home with my nephew to Illinois to visit him and his family and friends. I enjoyed my visit, but am glad to be back with these fabulous kids! Mrs. Watts did an amazing job in my absence. I surely appreciated her being here. FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson: As we wrap up our energy unit, all at-home activities in the Take-Home Workbook need to be done by Friday. We have completed all the lessons in the Student Guide but are finishing a few written exercises that are due Friday. We will take a quiz Friday to check for proficiency, review and reinforce any missed concepts early next week, take one more quiz next Wednesday, and then we will be finished with our energy unit!

MIDDLE SCHOOL The MIDDLE SCHOOL WINTER DANCE WILL BE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, FROM 7-9:30, in the gym.

Here are the details: - The dance is for FLS students only.

- Masks will be required for the dance. When fast dancing or line dancing, masks do not have to be worn as social distancing will be enforced.

- During slow dances (there will be a few, but not as many as in the past), both students must wear a mask. This will be strictly enforced.

- If parents would like their students to wear masks at all times, please inform your child, and then that will be his or her responsibility to follow your rules.

- This is not a "date dance." It is a middle school dance and the kids will have more fun with less drama if students will arrive individually or with friend groups.

- In the past, classes have decided to eat out before coming to the dance. If that is what your class would like to do, a parent or two from the class should volunteer to head that up. All students from the class should be invited and the prices on the menu should financially accommodate everyone. In the past, classes have eaten at Taco Bell, McDonald's, Chili’s, and Rib Crib.

- Remember, this is a middle school dance. Fancy cars and limos are a fun idea, but not suggested or encouraged. Corsages and flowers are not suggested or encouraged. The kids need something to look forward to for their prom...not a middle school dance.

- We will not need parents to chaperone the dance. The middle school teachers will be chaperoning.

Parents are welcomed to take pictures until 7:30 and then you are free to leave and enjoy a few Friday night hours.

- Dress for the dance is dressy. No sweats, t-shirts, hoodies, or jeans with holes.

- Girls may wear dresses or slacks. Dresses must have straps...spaghetti straps are ok. No strapless dresses. Please make sure dresses are not too short, too tight, or too low in the front. We don't want to see any "prom-looking" dresses.

- Boys may wear slacks or nice jeans with no holes or frayed hems. A button-down or polo shirt would be appropriate.

- We will have limited snacks and drinks so please eat dinner before arriving.

- Parents should pick up their students by 9:30. Student council members should be picked up at 10:00 to allow for a quick clean-up.

Mrs. Scott: 5th Grade Math has been working on multiplying by two digits. We will move on to Lesson 52 on Thursday. The next test is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, February 4.

6R Math is reviewing for their Chapter 6 Test. Their test will be THIS Thursday.

6A/7R Math is reviewing for their Chapter 7 Test. Their test will be THIS Friday.

7A Math reviewed the beginning of the week. The class took their Chapter 7 Test today & will begin Chapter 8 tomorrow.

8R Math has started Chapter 6 with ratios and rates.

8A Math is working with inequalities in Chapter 6.

Personal Finance – Mrs. Scott: ALL 7th and 8th students will have mock interviews next Tuesday, February 2nd.

We will discuss the proper attire to wear to an interview on Thursday; therefore, part of their grade for their mock interview will be their attire. If your child chooses to wear their everyday school clothes to school and brings a change of clothes for that class period, that is acceptable.

Mrs. Hanson: We have wrapped up our energy unit. All workbooks should have been turned in and graded. No late work will be accepted after Friday. We had a quiz today and we will have another quiz on Friday, after reviewing Thursday.

Thank you for your pizza box donations, it's much appreciated. We will perform that experiment as soon as we have sunny days! Pray for sunshine!

Ms. Kester: This week is test week for History classes! The students are armed for success and will spend the next few days dreaming about colonists, the Mississippi River, or Nile River. In Religion, we are focusing on the character of love according to 1 Corinthians 13 and anticipating our next Scripture of the Week from Psalm 139. And French will prove a colorful class as we learn our colors en francais. Let's finish this last week of January strong, Lutheran strong!

Mrs. Harbeson: Hi, Everyone! I hope you all are doing well! We're so glad that sixth grade is out of quarantine and back at school. We missed you! We are working hard keeping everyone caught up and continuing to learn. Please be patient as it is sometimes challenging to keep up with in-person teaching and distance teaching. I appreciate all the notes and words of encouragement and appreciation.

I have sent a FastDirect to all parents and students about the upcoming middle school dance. Please check your FD or this Cardinal Chatter issue for details!

In language and literature, all classes are getting to the good parts of their novels. I encourage you to keep up with your reading and to be prepared for your quizzes. Reading quizzes for all classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

7th and 8th grade will have their first grammar test this Friday. We've been doing a lot of practice and working hard.

Everyone should do well. 6th grade was scheduled to take their grammar test this Friday, but I am postponing it until next week so we can get back into our routine and review appropriately before they take their test. I pray for good health - both physically and mentally - for us all. Keep the faith! God's got this!

We have outside recess every day, and some days are VERY cold. Please send a jacket with your student to school EVERY DAY! Also, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them!
