Covid Update - Throughout the year, PLEASE contact Mr. Birnbaum immediately if you or your child has been exposed to Covid. There will be a list of follow up questions like date and symptoms to track exposure risks. Fever is still believed to be a big indicator so please do NOT bring your child to school unless they have been fever free for a minimum of 24 hours. We know allergies and sore throats are going around and students have tested NEGATIVE for the Covid virus. Hallelujah.

School will be closed on Friday, September 18; Sign-up sheets are out in daycare. If you need daycare that day, the last day to sign up is Tuesday, September 15.

1 QUARTER CHAPEL OFFERINGS: We have 2 different opportunities for Chapel offerings for the 1 quarter (we invite you to participate in both, if you are able). You may bring items for school kits (see the attached page), and monetary donations will be used to continue First Lutheran School’s sponsorship of Rosario; a child that we have “adopted” through Compassion International. Rosa’s favorite color is purple and her favorite food is mole. She enjoys the Bible story about Jonah, and wants to be a good knitter when she grows up.

Our sponsorship of Rosario provides medical checkups, nutritious food, health and hygiene training, educational assistance, access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief, and mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God’s children. Most important of all, Rosario will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. Please pray for Rosa daily, and be generous with your chapel donations so that we can continue our sponsorship of this child, who is not as fortunate as we.

Also, as always, we are collecting used ink and toner cartridges. For every 20 we turn in, we get a credit on our Staples purchases. That translates into less school expenses and less tuition increase. Thank you for everyone who contributes their ink/toner cartridges already!

LUTHERAN SCHOOLS PEN PAL PROJECT, Grades 2- 8: Want a way for your child to work on their writing skills while building a relationship with a Lutheran school student in another part of the country? Complete the order form in the 8/26 chatter, enclose $5, and mail it to the address on the form. Your child will be paired up with a child of similar age and interests. The deadline to sign up is September 25, 2020.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: We keep working on finding ways to maintain and increase health and safety.

Thank you to those who have quickly picked up their kicks or had them checked by a medical professional before bringing them to school with any possible sign of the virus. We will continue to get through this together.

CAFETERIA – Mrs. Lyons: Welcome back to the Cafeteria; it’s good to see everyone! The beginning of the year is a great time for reminder on Cafeteria hours and what’s up’s. The FLS cafeteria has a wall mount thermometer, and each person who enters gets their temperature taken as they enter the building, both at breakfast and lunch.

The cafeteria serves breakfast from 7:30 (doors open) until 7:55 a.m.. This gives the kids time to eat/finish their breakfast before 1st grade and under leaves at 8 (with an adult) to walk back to their building, and 8:05 when the older children pack up and walk to their buildings (ELE with an adult). These students are allowed straight into their buildings, as they have already had their temperatures taken in the cafeteria. Monday and Friday we have cereal for breakfast, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we have hot food for breakfast.

Due to the Covid virus and working to minimize cross-contamination between grades, all students 1st grade and under are eating in their building.

This week we are busy learning the Letter A and the sound it makes, along with reviewing our colors, shapes, and numbers. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: I hope you had a wonderful long weekend! We are still working on getting our routine down. Some of us are struggling with our routine, but we will continue to work on it. We are still reviewing our alphabet a letter each day, and reviewing our color, shapes, and numbers. Our Bible words this week are “I, the Lord am your Savior”, Isaiah 60:16. Have a Blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: I hope everyone had a great long weekend! The Scholastic book order is due by September 11th and our class code is DWY6G. This week we are doing letters O, P, Q, R & S for review. Please have a wonderful week with many blessings from our Lord!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: I hope everyone enjoyed your long weekend! Our memory verse for Friday is Psalms 31:14 - I trust in you, O Lord; I say, "You are my God." Please bring headphones or earbuds for your child if you have not done so yet. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 24 for our Auction and Family Fun Day! Blessings on your week!

The three day weekend was a treat. And now cooler weather! God is so good. I am pleased with the progress we're making. We're learning routines and expectations and trying very hard to do our best. Please listen to your child say the Lord's Prayer. Also help them learn their address and phone number. Several second graders need to work on tying shoes. Book orders are due September 15. You can send in an order with your child or complete the order on line (class code is HZ7CB). Thanks for all of the wish list items. You're amazing!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Labor Day. Even though it is a short week it will run as normal. Remember next Friday, the 18th, we do not have school also. This means we will have test on Thursday. This week: Memory Genesis though Esther, due Friday. Song link is on my bulletin board on FastDirect.

Reading: Story test on Friday, Spelling test on Friday, with paragraph on Thursday. Math: test next week. Science: We did not do well on our quiz; we are going to retake this test. Later in the week we will move on to warm-blooded animals.

Test: we have not been doing well on our tests so far this year. Please study and review at home. We look at spelling words every day, but they need help at home. Let me know if I can help in any way. Have a great week!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: What a wonderful relaxing three day weekend we had! A great time to focus on rest with our Lord. Welcome to our school and classroom family Alex. Continue reading to earn our AR goals, we are making big progress! We are accepting chapel money and school supplies any day of the week! Mid Quarters come out next Wednesday. This is a small look how we are doing academically now, not at report card time. This snapshot gives us a chance to do any reassessing for academic practices now and not be scared when we have a first report card. Missing work and work done carelessly can really make for surprising grades. Being organized & following directions are the keys! Please check school handbook for the school policy for late work. Memory and final spelling test are on Friday.

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: It's Wednesday already! I hope your weekend was pleasant. Please be sure to read, sign, and send back the field trip permission slip with the money soon. That trip is the 24th. Blessings!

MIDDLE SCHOOL Mrs. Scott: I hope everyone enjoyed the three day weekend! A reminder that if there is an assignment posted in the FastDirect grade book and your child does not have a grade for it, I am missing that assignment.  5th Grade Math has completed their first test and everyone did amazing on it! We will begin lesson 11 today.  6R Math took their Chapter 1 Test today and will start Chapter 2 tomorrow.  6A/7R Math took their Chapter 1 Test today and will start Chapter 2 tomorrow.  7A Math took their Chapter 1 Test last week. The class started on Chapter 2 yesterday.  8A Math will begin reviewing for Chapter 1 Test this week. Chapter 1 Test will be sometime next week. I will update the Remind app once the test date is decided.

If you have not already, please download the Remind app and join your child’s class with the appropriate code below. Sometimes test days are changed before the next chatter article comes out and the Remind app is the easiest way for me to update parents as to when tests will be scheduled.

We know how to write a research question, identify independent/dependent variables, and can differentiate variables from controls. All of these things will help us write the perfect hypothesis.

7th grade is finishing up all of our identification test that will tell us what these unknown mineral specimens are.

By the end of the week we are going to create a study guide for these unknown minerals to help us study for the Unidentified Mineral Quiz next week.

8th grade is exploring each characteristic of life. We have already examined cells using microscopes and created life cycle animations. We will be extracting DNA from strawberries, explore and describe fetal development, determine if certain characteristics of an organism affects the type of reproduction used, and show the path of energy in different ecosystems.

All classes will have a vocab quiz this week again. Vocab should be studied regularly.

Ms. Kester: I hope all of you had a relaxing Labor Day weekend! We are approaching mid-quarter already and I will be sure to have grades in Fast Direct by then. In the meantime, your child can keep up with their grades on Google Classroom, as I have them posted there.

History classes are preparing for tests that are taking place next week, and Religion classes are ahead of schedule - having afforded us the opportunity to slip in a supplemental material at the end of last week - episode one of The Chosen. The resource focuses on both Old and New Testament cultures which benefits our Religion studies. The students really enjoyed it.

Lastly, we are happy to have a new student in our homeroom - Jolyssa Daine. We welcome her to our class and to First Lutheran School!

Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings! I hope you all had a wonderfully fun and restful Labor Day weekend. It seems like those 3-day weekends come just in the knick of time! Believe it or not, one week from today marks the midway point of our first quarter. To have an accurate view of your progress, students must make sure that they have submitted all of their assignments. The students have done a good job of learning GoogleClassroom and the new sites we will be using in language. I have noticed, however, that more students have been coming to class with no ChromeBook or uncharged ChromeBooks. For my class, it is imperative to come prepared every day. We will use ChromeBooks every day, and students will miss out on taking quizzes and completing assignments if they do not have their computers ready to go.

Eighth grade took their first grammar test today. 7th and 6th are preparing for theirs. All classes have been reading. 8th is finishing up The Outsiders, 7th has been reading short stories, and 6th is reading Maniac Magee. All students will be taking quizzes and/or AR tests on their assigned reading. That's all I have for now. Blessings on the rest of your week!
