Covid Update - Hallelujah, no new covid or even close contact has been reported for a week but we have had another Strep and a case of pink eye over the weekend, so no real contact there. We have one student out with a fever but no other symptom so we are monitoring that case. Thank you for keeping us informed and staying away if there is a possibility of the virus.

EXTRA MASKS: Parents, please…please …please to save the class from disruptions and you from making extra trips, please put an extra mask in your child’s backpack for those days when they forget theirs at home/in the car/etc. An extra water bottle would be a great addition!

PICTURE DAY! TOMORROW! (Thursday!): Picture Day is tomorrow (Thursday) morning. To order a picture, you need to fill out the packet that came home with your child, put money in, and send it back with your student to their homeroom teacher OR order them online. Either way works, but only if you do it prior to Thursday! That means they need to bring it to class with them Thursday morning at the latest. If you bring me their picture packet next week, I will have to give it right back to you, as they only take them before the pictures are taken. If you miss the deadline, you will be able to order from the proofs when they come in, but you will not be able to choose your background.

BRING YOUR BIBLE TO SCHOOL DAY TOMORROW (Thursday), for students in 2nd - 8th grades.

Please make sure their name is in their Bible. If you have an older student who needs a Bible, Teen study Bibles (NIV) are in the office for $10.

Fallapalooza - Saturday, October 24 from 10-2:00. A catch-all that includes Family Fun (Day) / Auction / Trunk or Treat / BBQ contest / etc. Details and order form are on the attached flyer. Ask your child's teacher and/or room parent about your class auction item and your game work shift time (between 9:30-12:30) if you haven’t been contacted already. Also, please keep bringing us your little stuffed animals and small toys that we can give away as prizes.

PURPLE ARMOR OF GOD T-shirts came in & have been handed out. If you didn’t get yours, please contact the office.

GRANDPARENTS DAY before Thanksgiving - We are considering splitting up Grandparents Day. Monday morning - Nov. 23rd will still be PS & PK, but we are contemplating the grandparents of students with the last names starting with A to L come on Monday afternoon and M to Z coming on Tuesday morning. Watch for more details.

FREE SCHOOL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH FOR ALL, FOR NOW…: Between 9/14/2020 and 12/31/2020, or until money runs out, (weekends, holidays, and closed days excluded), First Lutheran School will be participating in an extension of the Summer Feeding Program, which allows our 1 – 18 years old students to enjoy school-prepared breakfast and lunch at no cost to the parents/guardians. 1 QUARTER CHAPEL OFFERINGS: We need to collect an average of $35 a week to be able to continue our sponsorship of Rosa for this year, and we have only collected $40.60 so far. If you are able, please send monetary contributions with your student for chapel donations, so that we can continue to help meet Rosa’s educational, physical, and spiritual needs during the next year.

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) at the church is now collecting used (clean) shoes and items for Baby Kits (see attached flyers). You may drop off these donations in the school office.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: There have been nine principal's in First Lutheran School's 68 year history. Last week on September 23 the fourth principal, Eugene Straub of Topeka, Kansas enter his heavenly home at the age of 83.

He served here from 1962 to 1969. He is survived by his wife (Irma) of 62 years.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: This week in preschool we are learning all about the Letter E and the sound it makes. Thursday is Picture Day. Have a great week!

IF YOU ARE DRIVING ON A FIELD TRIP, PLEASE STOP BY THE OFFICE SO WE CAN MAKE A COPY OF YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE AND VEHICLE INSURANCE. THANK YOU! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Happy Birthday Brooks! PICTURE day is tomorrow. Order forms with payment are due at picture time. Show and Tell is on Friday; Book orders are also due to me or online on Friday. The cooler weather has been nice. Please send a jacket with your Childs name in it every day; we go outside in the mornings before it warms up. Pumpkin Patch field trip permission slip and money for each person attending is due back to me by Wednesday, October 7th. If you have any questions, please contact me. Our Bible words this week are, Seek first the kingdom of God. Matthew 6:33. We finished our alphabet review today, and will start our letter clusters next week.

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Parents please send your Rustic Roots Pumpkin Patch forms with the money back to school. I am sending a new sheet home in case yours was lost. Thank you very much. I am starting something new by letting the children that are doing their online reading homework have a trip to the treasure chest (toy items) for a reward! So please read online with your child. This Friday we have show & tell. Also, we would like to wish Carsyn a happy birthday on Friday the 2nd! If your child is not catching on to the ABC's then please review these at home, too, with the sounds. Thank you for all your help working together (home/school) for your child's learning progress! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is Psalm 56:3 - When I am afraid, I will trust in you.

Picture day is tomorrow! Come to school with your best smiles! :) Field trip permission forms and money are due by next Wednesday, Oct. 7. Each family has been asked to bring an item for the Fall gift basket for the Auction. Our class will also be doing a game and we will have work shift times between 9:30-12:30. (Sat, Oct 24). The mornings are chilly this week; please make sure that your child has a jacket for morning recess time. Have a wonderful week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Awesome Autumn Greetings! Thanks so much to all of you who drove and accompanied us on our field trip. It was a beautiful, fun day! I was proud of our children’s behavior. We’re doing a review week in spelling and reading this week. Many of us need extra spelling and reading practice.

Please listen to your child read every evening. We take daily AR tests and would benefit from the added preparation. Praying God’s Blessings on your week!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: What amazing weather we are having! Fall is upon us. This week: Memory- we are starting the books of the New Testament. Matthew through 2 Timothy is due Friday. Next week we will do all the books of the New Testament. Reading: We are working our way through The One and Only Ivan. You will be seeing some pages come home for homework, so that we can finish by the end of the quarter. Spelling: test on Friday over Unit 1 review words. Math: Test next week. Science: we are working on our animal projects in class. These will be finished next week. Social Studies: we are working on our landform islands. Remember picture day is tomorrow. FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: The weather is changing & fall is here. We get to see & feel His power & love in the changing colors! Smile pretty for school pictures—they are tomorrow! The quarter is coming to an end very soon.

Continue to go over assignments with students for simple mistakes. This makes a big difference for academic understanding & retention of material. Some students are getting close to having a detention for not turning in work according to the school handbook. Completing work on time is a large part for success along with proper organization.

Fast Direct is a great tool to see how scholars are doing. Look for the appointment sheet for Parent Teacher Conference coming in the school mail soon. Some of us have a long way to go to make the first quarter AR goal! Please have your scholars to read nightly for AR. It really helps when we take the book home at night! Keep Reading! The SE State & Cap test is on the 21st of October. Peace as we Praise God. FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: It's almost October already! Time is just flying by! We're staying busy here in 5th grade. This is a review week in reading and spelling so there will be no tests in those subjects this week. There will be more review sheets, though. If they are not finished here at school they will be homework. Memory due Thursday is the 6th Commandment and meaning. Blessings!

5TH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson: We have studied how scientists work and will now be doing some activities that help us practice these techniques. We will also be starting a People in Science project. 5th graders have been learning about different people who have contributed to the field of science. They will get to choose a specific scientist they want to get to know better and will be creating a visual aid for an oral presentation. This project will be started in class, have multiple check in points, and will be overseen by me. A project description will go up on Google Classroom soon.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

STUDENT COUNCIL – Mrs. Harbeson: Congratulations to our new student council members! They are: 6th Grade: Isabella Strassle, Jagger Laughlin, and Khloe Andrews 7th Grade: Evan Mills and London Pettigrew th 8 Grade: Braden Barney, Reed Jackson, and Emma Bickford Check upcoming Cardinal Chatters for future events and activities!

Mrs. Scott: 5th Grade Math wrapped up Lesson 19 yesterday. We reviewed for our Test 3 today and will take our Test 3 on Thursday.

6R Math has started Chapter 3 and will be working with decimals all chapter.

6A/7R Math has been reviewing for their Chapter 2 Test which will be taken on Thursday.

7A Math had their Chapter 2 Test last week and their Retest yesterday. They will begin Chapter 3 today.

8R Math has wrapped up Chapter 1 and has begun Chapter 2 with simplifying variable expressions.

8A Math has been working on distributive property.

Mrs. Hanson: 6th grade is learning the metric system which is actually more difficult that you would think since their entire educational career they have been taught the, ever so confusing, American Standard System. But we are catching on pretty quickly and will be working on converting metric units this week and taking a vocabulary quiz and conversion quiz on Friday.

7th grade will be reviewing all this week to prepare for our mineral chapter test on Friday. Even though we will be reviewing in class, studying still needs to happen at home. Best ways to study will be going over vocab, using the charts created in Google Classroom, and going back over reviews.

8th grade is now studying the molecules that living things are made of. We will be testing for the presence of these macromolecules in items that 8th graders bring from home. We will also quiz over everything we have learned this year on Friday.

Ms. Kester: Seventh and eighth graders kicked out a Religion test last week and jammed through their Scripture of the Week Friday! I'm so proud of them. This week's memory work is 2 Timothy 3:16-17. We spent an entire class period working on it Monday, so all students are familiar with it already.

Additionally, all middle-schoolers along with the 5th graders are busy taking notes in their respective History classes as another Quarter 1 test is on the horizon. They will be ready! Aside from courses, this week holds Picture Day and Bring your Bible to School Day! Remind your children as we look forward to both.

Mrs. Harbeson: Hello, Everyone! I hope your week has been treating you well. I just can't get enough of this beautiful weather! Isn't God good?! I want to congratulate our new student council members! 6th grade representatives are Khloe Andrews, Jagger Laughlin, and Isabella Strassle. The representatives for 7th grade are London Pettigrew and Evan Mills. Representing our 8th grade class are Emma Bickford, Braden Barney, and Reed Jackson. I look forward to working with you all on some fun projects and activities for our school!

Something new in language for all classes...reading logs have started again for the year, but this time they are through GoogleClassroom. The reading logs look the same, but now you will fill them out and submit them through GoogleClassroom. All of the students have been instructed on how to do this. Just like last year, reading logs are due and must be submitted every Friday by 3:20. I do not take late reading logs...this is the only assignment in my class that I will not take late. The reading logs are also an "all or nothing" grade. The minimum number of minutes to read each week is 120 minutes. If you do not meet the 120 minute minimum or fail to submit it by 3:20, you will receive a "0" on this assignment. This will be a weekly assignment so get in the habit of remembering to submit it every Friday. As usual, daily reminders will be written on my board, and I will remind you verbally. Of course, the due date will also be announced on GoogleClassroom. That's it for now. Blessings on the rest of your week!
