FLS NEEDS YOU!: We need subs! Not every day teachers, but people who can save us when we have teachers that get sick/have to leave with sick children, etc. You can volunteer or be paid for subbing, and if you have plans the day we call, you can always say no. You can even specify what days you are available/not available and which grades you will or won’t do. If you, and aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc. are willing to be on our sub list, please contact the office!

LIFT CHAIR: If you know someone who is in need of a SMALL lift chair, we know someone who has a blue one to give away. Please contact the school office if you are interested.

ELECTRIC WHEEL CHAIR: - Does anyone have an electric wheel chair that they would be willing to sell?

1ST QUARTER CHAPEL OFFERINGS: Chapel offerings this quarter will be used to continue First Lutheran School’s sponsorship of Victor and Rosario; children that we have “adopted” through Compassion International. Our sponsorship provides medical checkups, nutritious food, health and hygiene training, educational assistance, access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief, and mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God’s children. Most important of all, they will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. Please pray for them daily, and be generous with your chapel donations so that we can continue our sponsorship of children who are not as fortunate as we are.

BOXTOPS: We can’t clip them anymore; we have to scan receipts via the BoxTop app. If you would drop your grocery / office supply receipts 1) in the black mailbox in front of the administration building or 2) put them in your child’s backpack, they will get them to the office where we will scan them and then throw them away or return them, whichever you prefer. If you get electronic receipts (think WalMart grocery pickup), please forward those to Connie at lutheransecretary@yahoo.com, and I can send them in through my account. Thank you!

INK & TONER RECYCLING: Help us keep your costs down! If you have a new or used ink or toner cartridge that you are done with, please send them with your student and the teachers will get them to the office. We recycle these and earn credit on the supplies that the school purchases each month. THANK YOU for your help with this!

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Thank you for the condolences for my 99 year old World War II uncle who helped with clearing out the German concentration camps. He outlived his two wives, two of his eight grandchildren, and all but one of his six siblings and their spouses. We wait with eagerness for our heavenly reunion.

DAYCARE – Ms. Vap: Infants, Ones, and Twos Parents - please be sure to activate your Brightwheel account if you have not done so. This will be our main source of communication between directors, teachers, and parents. You can always call the daycare office at 762-1124, but we would prefer all other communication thru the app. Daycare & Before/After School Care - we are still needing work/school schedules for those who are subsidy contracted, by October 1st please.

MUSIC – Mrs. Brey: Preschool and Pre-K students are singing in church at 9:00 on October 10! See you there!

LIBRARY – MRS. MANNING: Do you have any cookbooks laying around the house not in use? The kids love to look through them, and the few that we have are always checked out, and they are “hungry” for something new! If you would be willing to donate them, our students would appreciate it so much. Thank you!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Daine: What fun we are having in the PS3 classroom! I am enjoying your children very much! Please check backpacks for papers, art work, and reminders. Picture day is tomorrow! Have a blessed rest of the week!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: This week we are reviewing what we have learned so far and getting ready to start on the alphabet! The students are doing great! Have an awesome week!!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Happy Birthday Steven! Picture day is tomorrow! Pictures must be paid for before they are taken to order. With the cooler temperatures in the morning we are wearing jackets. Please label all jackets and hoodies with your child's name, so that we can find the owner if they misplace them. The October book order is in folders today and due back to me or online by Friday, October 8th. If you ordered from the September order, it should be here this week. We are participating in the Book-it Reading Challenge this year. Look for the note and reading calendar in the folder today. Our goal is to read for at least twenty minutes each day and color the calendar day.

At the end of the month return the calendar showing that you read to your child each day and they will get a free pizza coupon. Preschool and PreK will be singing in church on Sunday October, 10th. Please plan to bring your child that day.

More information will come home soon. We are going to the pumpkin patch on Wednesday, October 13 th. The information and permission slip is in the folder today. Please return the permission slip and money for each person going to me by Wednesday, October 6th. Our Bible words this week are, Seek first the kingdom of God. Matthew 6:33 We finished our alphabet review today, and will start over with our letter clusters next week. Whew! That is a lot of information! If you have any questions, please let me know. KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Our class would like to wish Brooks a happy birthday on Friday, Oct. 1st. Also, show and tell will be this Friday. We will be taking a field trip to the Quail Valley Farms Pumpkin Patch in Winfield Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 13th. Please look for the orange information sheet in your child's backpack today. We will need drivers and I hope all parents can go with their child for this special day! The field trip form is due back on Wednesday Oct. 6th with payment. Have a wonderful week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is Psalm 56:3 - When I am afraid, I will trust in You. Picture day is tomorrow (Thursday). Please make sure to bring in your picture form! A reminder for AR books - Please make sure that your child has read their book before Wednesday and also that the book gets returned back to school on Wednesday. We will be having a field trip on Wednesday, October 13. Please see the note and the permission form.

Money and permission forms are due next week Wednesday. Happy birthday to Carsyn on October 2!

SECOND GRADE – Ms. Felton: We are moving and grooving in second grade, and looking forward to the cooler weather that is coming! This week’s memory is Psalm 86:5, and next week will be Psalm 143:10. Please submit Scholastic orders by tomorrow, September 30! Next week we start our next religion unit about the Promised Land! We’ll have (2)

another math test next Wednesday - it’s about every week that we’ll have one. They will also be tested on their +2 addition facts. We are beginning a new unit in science next week also, beginning to use science tools as we explore our world. Keep reading for 15 minutes each night - it helps your child more than you can imagine, and most are still working toward their AR goals!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: We made it another week! The kids are doing a great job settling in, getting their work done, and asking questions. We are counting the days till our field trip and getting our A.R. goals done. This week: Memory: ALL Old Testament books. We will spend the next two weeks doing the New Testament books. Reading: We are finishing up Sideways Stories. They will be taking the A.R. test over it on Friday and next week we will be back in our reading books. Math: We had a test yesterday; look for another one after lesson 25. Science: we are going to be finishing up animals in the next week or so. Look for a test and a project to finish out the quarter. Social Studies: We are studying the seven continents. We will be moving on next week. Water: we have run out of water bottles. We would greatly appreciate it if each family could donate a case to us. The weather has been hot and they are doing a great job drinking water. Grades: remember grades are always changing, so please keep checking FastDirect. If you have any question, please let me know. FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: See you Friday to try on clothes, sew, and to cut our apples in the old style way to prepare for Rose Hill for the 12th. The end of the first reading goal is the 14th! We are at many places in making goals.

Test should be taken at least weekly. Please log in & check with Renaissance, to see how kids are doing. The 14 th also means the end of the first quarter of school. We need to be and stay organized, and follow directions. Please look on FastDirect for missing work. The first quarter is always a big adjustment. Turning in work on time is a necessity for success. Our SW State and Cap test is tomorrow! Have the kids been studying at home? This is the foundation for larger regions. Picture day is tomorrow; smile pretty! 5th Grade & Middle School PRETTY PLEASE?!!! If your student has had the Covid shot(s), can you please use your phone to take a picture of their card and send it to Connie at lutheransecretary@yahoo.com (or bring one to the office to copy)? I need to track that, along with their immunizations. When your child moves to the high school, that information will move with them, and be one less thing you have to provide. Thank you to everyone who has sent/brought them in already!

MATH – Mr. Birnbaum: 5th Grade Math Advanced class is working on division and listing answers in three forms - remainders, fractions, and decimals.

MATH – Mr. McKinley: 6th we are adding on measuring metric units and preparing for chapter 2 test which is Thursday this week.

7th We are reviewing the test from Friday and starting chapter 3, data and statistics.

7th advanced and 8th are finishing up chapter 2 with decimals in algebraic equations and preparing for chapter test on Thursday.

SCIENCE – Mrs. Porter-Cain: Busy, Busy, BUSY!!! 6th grade has returned from Lutherhoma! They had a blast!

PICTURES ARE ON THE 30th! Forms went home with your 6th grader on Tuesday!

5th Science- Weather is where it’s at right now!

6th Science- We are still working on genetics and traits!

7th Science- We are exploring all things elements! Please send your child with index cards! 118 index cards are needed!

8th Science--INSECTS! We have been hunting, gathering, & identifying insects! Please help your child by reminding them to find bugs! I am out of containers so your child will need to provide their own! Condiment cups with lids work! Their projects will be due & presented the week of Fall Break! If you have any questions, please let me know!

2nd-4th PE-motor skills! We will be covering motor skills such as dribbling, hand & feet, catching, throwing, etc.

5th-8th-skills and drills for basketball! We are moving closer to the season and want to work when we can!

5th-8th Health Science-We will be learning how the lungs and heart work together.

Basketball-WATCH YOUR PLAYERS GRADES! I cannot stress this enough! I am checking their grades weekly but I cannot catch everything! Eligibility happens at FALL BREAK! Game schedule comes out in this chatter! Come support your Cardinals! Each home game we will host different chapel families, be watching! GO CARDS! LANGUAGE – Ms. Kester: Our sixth graders are back and settled after their Lutherhoma getaway! I know they had a blast, and it was great to spend time outside the classroom with them as well as the awesome parents who accompanied. Along with all the other middle schoolers, fifth grade included, they also nailed oral presentations centered on their respective AR books; so, we've been busy! The remainder of this week and the next will consist of study guides followed by quizzes about the books, then all students will return their AR books and get new ones, as we push toward the end of this first quarter.

Speaking of endings, all English classes will close the quarter with vocabulary and grammar tests; hence, most of our time will center on preparing for such. This will include dedicated class time to do corrections and homework, Q & A sessions, and teacher reviews. Please encourage your children to take advantage of these offerings by their utilizing the dedicated homework days, asking me questions, and visiting me for one-on-one help.

In religion class, we can't get enough of Colossians, so this week's memory work is found there, too - Colossians 3:16-17. Students will explore these verses in depth and even create an original work to commemorate them. They will recite the memory work NEXT Friday to allow ample time to unpack it.

Other than that, please remind your child that reading logs are due every Friday. Fifth graders use paper reading logs; all other grade levels complete these electronically on Google Classroom. Lastly, I want to send a big THANK YOU to parents who generously provided and continue to provide the middle-school building with chocolates, Cheez-its, and styrofoam cups! We are making great use of them across all of our grade levels, fifth through eighth, and think of you every day. May God bless your thoughtfulness and generosity. Toodles!

SOCIAL STUDIES – Mr. Brey: 5th - We are continuing on the colonies. We will have a quiz early next week.

6th - We are doing presentations up through Thursday. We will start on Ancient Cultures after the presentations.

7th - We will be looking at various cultures in the Eastern hemisphere. We will have a quiz early next week.

8th - Special thanks to the class for wanting to pursue a more ambitious curriculum. We will dive into the constitutional convention this week and look at our government's framework.
