Covid Update - We praise God that we are at 14 days since the start of school and our first contact with the Covid virus. No noticeable symptoms manifested with any of the students, not even the family that tested positive. We will continue to monitor all the students and try to diligently maintain sanitation and safety precautions. Thank you to those that have already had to have your child tested and the continued negative results. We are sorry, but due to COVID, parents will not be allowed in chapel. For award ceremonies we will make adjustments so that parents may attend.
ONE- OR TWO-PAYMENT DISCOUNT: If you chose the one- or two-payment tuition option, your August payment is 2 days past due! Please contact Connie in the office if you need to change payment plans. ST

1 QUARTER CHAPEL OFFERINGS: We have 2 different opportunities for Chapel offerings for the 1 quarter (we invite you to participate in both, if you able). You may bring items for school kits (see the attached page), and monetary donations will be used to continue First Lutheran School’s sponsorship of Rosario; a child that we have “adopted” through Compassion International. Rosa’s favorite color is purple and her favorite food is mole. She enjoys the Bible story about Jonah, and wants to be a good knitter when she grows up. Our sponsorship of Rosario provides medical checkups, nutritious food, health and hygiene training, educational assistance, access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief, and mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God’s children. Most important of all, Rosario will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. Please pray for Rosa daily, and be generous with your chapel donations so that we can continue our sponsorship of this child, who is not as fortunate as we are.
BASKETBALL – COACH AMANDA: Here is the link to purchase Cardinal spirit gear for this season! We have long and short sleeved t-shirts, hats, fleece pants, hoodies, socks, gear bags…take a look! The online store closes Sept 14!! https://www.bsnteamsports.com/shop/FLSbk21 P.E. – COACH AMANDA: I'm so happy to see all of my kiddos!! Please remember to send a water bottle and the right footwear on your child on their PE days! The water fountains are blocked off, and they need a water bottle for hydration! Basketball game schedule will be out soon! STAPLES REWARDS ARE BACK! If you shop at Staples (in store or online), we need some numbers from your receipt! Or you can do it yourself, of course! Staples will give us up to 5% back to use on our school purchases, and we will use that to buy ink, colored paper, tape, etc., to help keep your costs down! To help us out, you can enter the receipt yourself, leave a copy of the receipt in the black box out front of the offices, bring the receipt to me, or send a picture of it to me at lutheransecretary@yahoo.com and I'll enter it for you. To enter your receipt yourself, make your purchases at Staples and then visit staples.com/classroomrewards , create an account, and donate it in my name (Connie Erickson) via First Lutheran (I promise, the money goes to the school...not me!), or you can enter it in your teachers’ name if they have signed up on their own. If you have any questions, just give me a call or stop by the office. Thanks so much! Also, as always, we are collecting used ink and toner cartridges. For every 20 we turn in, we get a credit on our Staples purchases. That translates into less school expenses and less tuition increase. Thank you for everyone who contributes their ink/toner cartridges already! 1
LUTHERAN SCHOOLS PEN PAL PROJECT, Grades 2- 8: Want a way for your child to work on their writing skills while building a relationship with a Lutheran school student in another part of the country? Complete the order form in last weeks’ chatter, enclose $5, and mail it to the address on the form. Your child will be paired up with a child of similar age and interests. The deadline to sign up is September 25, 2020. PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Thank you for your patience and understanding as we try to figure out the best way to keep everyone safe and healthy. Continue to pray for all of us as we keep our eyes with a 20/20 vision on Christ. CAFETERIA – Mrs. Lyons: Welcome back to the Cafeteria; it’s good to see everyone! The beginning of the year is a great time for reminder on Cafeteria hours and what’s up’s. The FLS cafeteria has a wall mount thermometer, and each person who enters gets their temperature taken as they enter the building, both at breakfast and lunch. The cafeteria serves breakfast from 7:30 (doors open) until 7:55 a.m.. This gives the kids time to eat/finish their breakfast before 1st grade and under leaves at 8 (with an adult) to walk back to their building, and 8:05 when the older children pack up and walk to their buildings (ELE with an adult). These students are allowed straight into their buildings, as they have already had their temperatures taken in the cafeteria. Monday and Friday we have cereal for breakfast, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we have hot food for breakfast. Due to the Covid virus and working to minimize cross-contamination between grades, all students 1st grade and under are eating in their building. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a FastDirect or call the office and they’ll get a message to me! Thanks, Sandi PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: I hope everyone had a great weekend! This week preschool is learning all about the letter H and the sound it makes. Have a great week! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Happy September! Thanks again for all of the wish list items, and bringing snacks! Show and Tell will be this Friday; book orders are also due to me or online on Friday. Our school is starting a fundraiser today. Look for the note in mail folders today. Go online and sign up. Fill out the bottom portion of the note and return it to school and your child receives a prize. Monday is Labor Day, so no school. Our Bible words this week are, I have called you by name, you are Mine. Isaiah 43:1 We are still reviewing/introducing the letters of the alphabet. We are also reviewing colors, shapes and numbers. Enjoy your extra day off, and have a blessed week! KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: I am sending in a scholastic book order on Sept. 11th, please look for information in your child's backpack. Our class code is DWY6G. (orders.scholastic.com) You can order and pay online. Thank you, we will have show & tell this Friday (the first Friday of each month). Please make sure it fits in your child's backpack. I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day! Have an awesome week and thanks for sharing your children with me! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: All is going well in 1st grade! Memory verse for Friday is Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength. Book orders are due on Friday, Sept. 4 online or with a check made out to Scholastic Book orders. I need each child to bring headphones or earbuds to use during our computer time and to use taking our AR tests. We will need these by Wednesday, Sept. 9 (after Labor Day). Happy birthday to Hadlee on Sept 8! Praying that you have a great and safe Labor Day weekend! SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy September! We are getting in the swing of things in second grade. It's been a long time since we were in a classroom and we're doing our best to remember rules and expectations. Keep encouraging your child as we journey through this year together. Practice spelling words a little each evening. Read something every evening. Continue to pray for us as we continue praying for you. Happy September birthday to Juan! God's Blessings, dear friend. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend. Stay safe and healthy. Blessings! THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: We made it through the first full week! How is everyone feeling? I think we are starting to get in the groove of everything. Events this week: Religion - Genesis through Ruth due on Friday. We will add more next week. Reading: Test on Friday. Most of us did really well last week. If your students test grade is below a 70 they will be able to correct it in class. Spelling: Test on Friday. Math: Test on lessons 1-10. We will now have a test every 5 lessons and will have 20 problems each night. Science: Quiz on Friday over chapter 1 - cold blooded animals. There is a review activity linked on Google classroom. Social Studies: We are moving on to Continents, Oceans, and Landforms. Prayers that we all stay healthy! Have a wonderful long weekend. Pretest will be held on Tuesday. FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Well we are really into the swing of school. Students see the need for full organization, focus and hard work. This task does take practice. A tool to being organized is using the planner, please keep signing planners nightly. Looking at student work helps scholars to stay on take task and helps to ensure a great school day! Keep reading at home for AR and practicing multiplication facts. Our Chapel offering is school supplies for overseas students & two children we will be supporting financially. Please look on FastDirect Bulletin Board for the 2
electronic version of the Friday Letter. Spelling, Memory, and Reading tests are on Friday. Do not forget there is no school on Labor Day. Blessings as we continue to learn how we are protected by God. FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: We are sailing right along in 5th grade. This continues to be a delightful group. Please see my Fast Direct Bulletin Board for quizzes and tests this week. Each student needs markers and colored pencils here at school. This was not on the supply list because we weren't sure these would be needed due to COVID. I am teaching art, however, and am finding that these supplies are definitely necessary. You do not need to send brand new supplies if you have some at home. Have a great Labor Day weekend! Blessings! FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson: Please make sure your student has a 3 subject spiral notebook with a plastic cover. Thank you!

I hope everyone is staying healthy! Have a great 3 day weekend! Mrs. Hanson: I am still so happy with how things are going here in the middle school! We only had our first full week last week, but all students are doing well and behaving beautifully! We are starting to get into the content pretty hard now though. And policies and procedures have been discussed and practiced for 11 days. It only takes 21 days to make a habit so if we are not doing things correctly right now we need to start soon because if we don't, we are creating some bad habits. The habits that we should be creating are: listening to and following verbal instructions in class, recording homework somewhere/somehow, completing and keeping track of homework to turn it in, staying organized, and parent/student/teacher communication. 6th grade is working with the scientific method and will be doing activities for each step. 7th grade is conducting tests to identify unknown minerals. 8th grade is learning what it takes to be considered living and will be doing activities to reinforce each characteristic. Vocab quizzes for all classes Friday. 5th grade science - please make sure your student has a 3 subject spiral notebook with a plastic cover. Thank you!

Ms. Kester: It's our tenth day of school and we're already into lessons, debates, and technology bliss! Today was Game Day in our History classes. We reinforced vocabulary, facts, and critical thinking, all in Jeopardy game-show style! Now we're moving on to our next lessons. Pictures are up in Google Classroom of our July and August birthday students! Streamers, balloons, and yummy desserts from The Banana Crate bakery accompanied us Monday as we discussed our Article of the Week topic migration. If your child is not yet in my Google Classroom, don't you fret. I'm dedicating Wednesday to ensuring everyone in my classes has joined. Our Scripture of the Week coincides with First Lutheran's theme this year - putting on the full armor of God. It's a smidge lengthier than last week's verse, but your student is up for the challenge. We will spend two weeks on it since there will be no school next Monday because of Labor Day. Likewise, there will be no new article for discussion that week since it falls on Monday as well. That's all for now. Enjoy the rest of your week! Mrs. Harbeson: Hi, Everyone! I hope your week has been treating you well! Everyone in middle school is hanging in there. In language, all students are becoming more comfortable using GoogleClassroom and completing on-line assignments. All classes are using GrammarFlip this year for grammar and writing. 7th and 8th graders have already completed their first project, and the 6th graders are continuing to work on theirs. I've moved their due date to next Tuesday (9/8). 8th grade has begun reading The Outsiders and are really enjoying it. We've had some really good class discussions. 7th grade has already taken their first AR test on a short story, "The Monkey's Paw," that we read together in class. More will follow. 6th grade will begin literature here in the next few days. For the most part, I am very pleased with how everyone is adjusting to how my class is being conducted this year. I do want to emphasize the importance of bringing a completely charged ChromeBook to class every day, as well as wearing masks whenever we are in the buildings. Masks are required for everyone whenever they are in my room. If you have not brought your extra one for school, please get that done ASAP. That's all I have for now! I pray God's blessings on us all for the rest of the week and on into Labor Day weekend! Enjoy that extra day off!

First Lutheran Church and School is packing and sending school kits to Lutheran World Relief (LWR)
Imagine having to choose between a meal or purchasing your child a notebook for school. Project Promise School Kits are sent to places where even the few required school supplies may be more than a family can afford. Pencils and paper can help write a positive future.
Why School Supplies?
Each School Kit Contains:
4 – spiral wide-ruled 70-page notebooks 1 – ruler (12 inch with centimeters) 1 – small manual pencil sharpener 1 – blunt-ended scissors 5 – unsharpened #2 pencils 5 – blue or black ball point pens (no clickers) 1 – box of 24 crayons 1 – 2½” rectangle pink eraser
To the children who receive School Kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not. Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, supplies like pens and paper may be more than many families can afford. And when parents can only afford to send one of their children to school, girls rarely get priority. Yet the education level of mothers has the biggest impact on child development.
We support
How Can YOU Help?! We are asking each student/family at First Lutheran School to donate their choice of any of the supplies on the list, as few or as many as you would like. Or, if you are able, consider donating enough supplies to create one complete kit!
Thank you for your help with this project!

Hello Parents, First Lutheran School is participating in a safe and easy fundraiser called School Store. It is 100% online, so there is no face-to-face selling, collecting money, or delivering products. SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall with over 400 nationally-known merchants including Sears, Target, Oriental Trading Co., Office Depot, Toys"R"Us, Family Book Store, and many more. When your family and friends make everyday purchases from their favorite merchants through SchoolStore.com, your school earns money. Participation only takes 12 minutes and your child will win fun and exciting prizes. Every student will receive a valuable Wild Republic Hugger, just for participating. More prizes will be rewarded when goals are reached. Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/sid.t?0000061206 to show our valued teachers your support. 6
