COVID UPDATE

Covid Update - We didn't even make it through the first three days of school without a positive case occurring in the Early Childhood. There were no symptoms, but due to a college sibling being exposed and positive, the family was also tested. The family is quarantined until Labor Day and we have restricted the students that may have been exposed to their own classroom and even to their own restrooms until after Labor Day, which will be 21 days. We praise God that it was a small class and many safety precautions were already in place. We pray God will continue to protect us and give us peace during these strenuous times.

We are sorry, but due to COVID, parents will not be allowed in chapel. For award ceremonies we will make adjustments so that parents may attend.

ONE- OR TWO-PAYMENT DISCOUNT: If you chose the one- or two-payment tuition option, your August payment is due by August 31 to get the discount. If you need help figuring your total due with the discount(s), please contact Connie in the office.

ST st 1 QUARTER CHAPEL OFFERINGS: We have 2 different opportunities for Chapel offerings for the 1 quarter (we invite you to participate in both, if you able). You may bring items for school kits (see the attached page), and monetary donations will be used to continue First Lutheran School’s sponsorship of Rosario; a child that we have “adopted” through Compassion International. Rosa’s favorite color is purple and her favorite food is mole. She enjoys the Bible story about Jonah, and wants to be a good knitter when she grows up.

Our sponsorship of Rosario provides medical checkups, nutritious food, health and hygiene training, educational assistance, access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief, and mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God’s children. Most important of all, Rosario will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. Please pray for Rosa daily, and be generous with your chapel donations so that we can continue our sponsorship of this child, who is not as fortunate as we are.

THEME SHIRTS: This years’ shirts reference Ephesians 6:11, putting on the full armor of God. They are a vibrant purple with white lettering, complete with toilet paper zeros on the numbers on the back. Stop by the office to see an example, or to purchase adult shirts. We have sold out of student sizes, but will be ordering more, via the attached order form. Please have the orders turned in to the office by THIS THURSDAY, August 27, so that we can get them ordered and back in a timely manner.

GARAGE SALE: Whether you rent a booth or not, be sure to come shop our multi-family garage sale on Saturday, August 29 from 7:30 – 12:00 in the gym. We’re going to have a little bit of everything there, from furniture to kid’s toys to house wares, and so much more. If you want a chance to let others purchase your treasures, booth spaces are $25 each. BYO tables; all we supply is the building. Stop by the school office to reserve your space.

P.E. – COACH AMANDA: I'm so happy to see all of my kiddos!! Please remember to send a water bottle and the right footwear on your child on their PE days! The water fountains are blocked off, and they need a water bottle for hydration! Basketball game schedule will be out soon!

Or you can do it yourself, of course! Staples will give us up to 5% back to use on our school purchases, and we will use that to buy ink, colored paper, tape, etc., to help keep your costs down! To help us out, you can enter the receipt 1

yourself, leave a copy of the receipt in the black box out front of the offices, bring the receipt to me, or send a picture of it to me at lutheransecretary@yahoo.com and I'll enter it for you. To enter your receipt yourself, make your purchases at Staples and then visit staples.com/classroomrewards , create an account, and donate it in my name (Connie Erickson) via First Lutheran (I promise, the money goes to the school...not me!), or you can enter it in your teachers’ name if they have signed up on their own. Also, as always, we are collecting used ink and toner cartridges. For every 20 we turn in, we get a credit on our Staples purchases. That translates into less school expenses and less tuition increase. Thank you for everyone who contributes their ink/toner cartridges already!

LUTHERAN SCHOOLS PEN PAL PROJECT, Grades 2- 8: Want a way for your child to work on their writing skills while building a relationship with a Lutheran school student in another part of the country? Complete the order form on the next page, enclose $5, and mail it to the address on the form. Your child will be paired up with a child of similar age and interests. The deadline to sign up is September 25, 2020.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Thank you to everyone who attend our back-to-school night yesterday. We hope you feel better about our plans moving forward on how to continue to teach through these uncertain times. Keep giving us suggestions on how to improve.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: I hope everyone has had a great start to the school year! Preschool is busy learning all about shapes and colors. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Greetings from Pre-K! We had a great first three days of school, and a great start to our first full week. We are working hard on learning routines, and getting used to keeping our mask on. It was great to see you at Back to School Night last night. If you weren't able to attend, I put the notes in the Wednesday mail folder that this Chatter was in. Thank you to those who have brought items from our class wish list. Since you are not coming in daily, I have posted it on our Class Tag page. Please remember to bring your class snacks this week. Thank you to the ones who have brought them already. We are reviewing our shapes and colors this week. We will start our quick introduction/review of the alphabet next week. We have been learning about the Armor of God during our Bible time.

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Please allow your children to bring a water bottle (or thermos) to school. We are not using our water fountains.

It was wonderful seeing parents at "Back-to-School Night" and thank you for coming. If you couldn't come, I am sending a "Monday Folder" home with your child today and a popcorn box (our sight words go in the popcorn box, please save them all and work on them). Please read all the papers inside. This folder is your child's homework and will be due every Monday (Tuesday if we don't have school on Monday). We will have a new book and words every week and we have online homework too if you have internet (more books to read). Our class wants to wish Creighton a Happy Late Birthday (8-14)! Have an awesome week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Thank you for those of you who were able to make it to Back to School Night.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Memory verse for Friday is Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

We will have our first spelling test on Friday. Also remember to return Reading Notebooks on Friday. And one more thing for Friday - Show and Tell. Have your child bring something that will tell us about themselves. (A favorite book or toy, a family picture, a picture of a pet, etc.). God's blessings and protection on our first full week of school!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Thank you for coming BACK to SCHOOL last night. If you were unable to attend, please check your child's folder for handouts. Feel free to contact me with questions and concerns. Keep praying that God would protect us now and always. Blessings!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Welcome to your first full week of Third Grade! I hope it is going well so far. It was great meeting with all of you last night. Hopefully you had your questions answered. If not let me know. For those of you that could not make it; please read over the information sent home and let me know if you have any questions.

This week: Memory- starting to work on the books of the Bible. Reading - Paragraph on Thursday and Test on Friday.

Math: First test will be next week. They will do great! We have been having some issues with people taking their unfinished math homework, home. Please ask your child when they get in the car if they have their books. I say it multiple times a day! Science: working on our unit of animals. Social Studies: Continents and Oceans.

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Thank you for the great family support last night for Back to School Night. If you were not able to make it last night, information has been sent home to look at; contact me with any questions. I can really see we are going to have a great year with amazing parents that are supporting their kids for a well rounded 2

education. I am so blessed with a great group of kids that are eager to learn. Thank you! We are reviewing in Math, in Language we are working on types of sentences. We have our AR goals set, so read to earn those points. Our Chapel offering is school supplies for overseas students. Please look on FastDirect Bulletin Board for the electronic version of the Friday Letter. Spelling, Memory, and Reading tests are on Friday. Do not forget there is no school on Labor Day. Blessings as we continue to learn how we were fully armored by God. FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! So far, so good...we're still in school! :) It was delightful to see many of you at Back-to-School Night yesterday evening. What a joy to work with such supportive parents! We thank Kelli Olechnowicz for making the awesome water bottle holders for each desk.

We really enjoy having a place to put our bottles so they aren't in our way. Happy birthday in August to Michaela (11) and to Adam (29)! Blessings!

MIDDLE SCHOOL Mrs. Scott: Welcome back! I hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed our extended Spring Break! I am glad to have the kids back in the classroom for as much normalcy as possible. All math classes have jumped right in to the first lessons and we are well on our way with Chapter 1. You should expect your child to have math homework most nights. Mr. Birnbaum and I try to give the students’ time in class to at least start their homework. My plan is to update the parents with upcoming tests via the Remind app. If you haven’t already, please download the app; it is free! It's so good to be with my kids again and it's so good to have so many new ones! I love it! Even though things are crazy ridiculous right now, we are going to have a great school year and have already had a great start!

It was wonderful to see everyone at Back to School Night. If you were unable to make it, your student was sent home with the handouts and information that was shared. And as I said, if you had any questions about/after last night's info session or if you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to message me whenever you need.

All classes have dove head first into content this week. We are all starting with vocabulary, of course, and will start every chapter with vocabulary.

We are also getting used to and comfortable using Google Classroom and our digital side of the curriculum. All students have been instructed, shown, and have practiced how to use any digital form of school work.

We will have a practice vocabulary quiz this Friday, and based on score it may count as credit or may not.

Ms. Kester: We are hitting the books this week! Homework assignments have started, and your child and I are finding our groove. Tonight is Back-to-School and Labor Day is quickly approaching. In the meantime, we are truckin' fullspeed ahead. Have a great week!

Mrs. Harbeson: Welcome back to school from the longest Spring Break EVER! I hope you all are doing well and have had a great start to our new school year. It was awesome seeing all the parents on Back to School Night last night. I hope I was able to answer all your questions, but if not, just send me a FastDirect. Language and literature will look a little different this year. We will be using GoogleClassroom every day. Therefore, it is imperative for students to bring their CHARGED ChromeBook to class every day. All classes have been working on getting comfortable using GoogleClassroom, joining Zoom meetings, watching "how to" videos that I've made, and learning how to complete and turn in assignments. We will be practicing all of this for the next several weeks. I want to assure parents that your student knows how to do everything I've just mentioned, and it's ok if you don't. I encourage you to ask your student to show you what they know! That's all I have for now. I pray God's blessings on us all over the next week.

Imagine having to choose between a meal or purchasing your child a notebook for school.

Project Promise School Kits are sent to places where even the few required school supplies may be more than a family can afford.

Why School Supplies?

Each School Kit Contains:        

To the children who receive School Kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not.

Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, supplies like pens and paper may be more than many families can afford. And when parents can only afford to send one of their children to school, girls rarely get priority. Yet the education level of mothers has the biggest impact on child development.
