Covid Update - Nothing new to report! We had only one response from a parent concerning the mask requirements. Again, please let Mr. Birnbaum know if you feel strongly about masks in your child's classroom/building. And now, it’s time for the CARDINAL SHOUTOUT; a place for us to recognize how talented and diversified our students are! Congratulations to all our Ponca City high school seniors! We want to give a shout out to Emma Valgora and Ryan Turnipseed for being in the top TEN of their class.
REPORT CARD PICKUP will be Friday, May 28 (closed for lunch from 1:00 – 2:30). Remember to check your accounts; report cards, certificates, etc. cannot be given out until all accounts are caught up; this includes tuition, daycare, missing library books, broken chrome books, etc. Payments will be accepted on the day of report card pickup. If you are leaving us with a credit in any of your accounts and wish to leave it to a needy family, talk with Connie in the office and she’ll make sure it gets (anonymously) to the account of a family who needs help. CLOSURES - FYI, we have reached class limits in all of our PK down to infants and 7th grade for the new school year. If you have not enrolled and/or paid, you may lose your spot. FLS TRACK MEET, 1ST-8TH GRADES, MAY 7, 10:00 – 2:00!: The yearly track meet is THIS FRIDAY; the schedule is on the following pages. All students 1st grade and up will participate in a school-wide track meet, competing against their classmates. On the day of the track meet, parents are encouraged to attend, and we ask you lend a hand if possible; please contact the office if you can help out for an hour or more. The kids will spend a lot of time outside, so be sure to apply and send sunscreen for the kids to apply during the day if it’s going to be sunny, and send a jacket/hoodie if it is a cool morning (with their name in it of course). Our 7th graders will be running a concession stand, with the proceeds going to fund their trip to Washington D.C. next year. Send money with your student if they wish to purchase lunch or drinks/snacks at the concession stand. If you have dr. appointments scheduled that day and need to pick up your student, please come extra early as it will take time to track down your student at their events. Students have the option of leaving at the end of afternoon events, at approximately 2:00 p.m. Please check out with your student’s homeroom teacher before leaving. (1)
2ND ANNUAL SCHATTE MEMORIAL COOKOFF: TO GOD BE THE GLORY! Our 2nd Annual Schatte Memorial Cookoff was a huge success! I personally would like to say “THANK YOU” to all the volunteers, the FLS cheerleaders, and the Boy Scouts for all of their hard work with this event, and thank you to everyone who came out and participated! We sold roughly 200 tasting kits, lots and lots of lemonade, and all kinds of goodies from the vendors. From the 8 teams in the BBQ cookoff to the 15 vendors who set up with their items, it was a great day all around. This was a perfect way to honor Mr. Paul Schatte and all he has done for our church, school, and community. We look forward to continuing this event for years to come! -Mrs. Heitman THANK YOU…If you see Mrs. Heitman, give her and her army of volunteers a huge thank you for all of their hard work. We also appreciate all of the participants in the cook-off. The day was so enjoyable that we are already looking forward to next year! SUMMER DAYCARE PACKETS are available in the office and in daycare. If you want your child to attend summer daycare, you must sign up; we are full from infants – 4 year olds, but have limited space available elsewhere. PICTURES ARE IN!: If you ordered pictures (individual or class), they were handed out last week. If you ordered pictures but didn’t get them, please contact the office immediately at 762-9950. If you didn’t order pictures, and want to, or ordered but want more, you have until June 30 to order from the proofs that were sent home. If you use the coupon attached to this chatter, you will get 10% off of your order, if you order by the date on the form. We have a very limited supply of extra class pictures. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE… HELP US FIND THE RIGHT PERSON FOR YOUR KIDS: – First Lutheran School is looking for help in daycare, for the summer and for the school year. In addition to being 18 or older, able to be fingerprinted and pass a background test, applicants also need to have a positive attitude, be dependable, and have a personality, language, and behavior (and facebook page) that is appropriate when working with children. They need to be physically able to pick up small children to change diapers and as needed, and be willing to work with children of all ages. THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: We are getting closer by the day! Keep working hard, the school year is almost over. THANK YOU everyone for coming to our wax museum. The kids did AMAZING!! I am so proud of all their hard work that they put into this project. This week: Spelling and Memory on Friday. Math: We have one more test to do and that will be next week. Reading: This week we are reading a chapter book together, next week we will do our last reading story. Social Studies: We are working on a money unit till the end of the year. Science: We will finish up rocks and soil next week. We will have time to get one more test in. Review will go home early next week. A.R. We all got our goal, now time to party. Please get permission slips returned by the end of the week. Teacher Appreciation: Thank you for all my wonderful flowers and goodies. I have really enjoyed your children this year. FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Thanks you SO much thinking of me during teacher appreciation week; what beautiful flowers you picked out! Life is happening in our room! We have many chicks in our brooder! Ask the kids for the official count. Book orders are due Monday the 10th, to have books for the 19th. Friday is our track day here at First Lutheran. Permission slips for the AR Party are due Friday! The end of the year is right around the corner; please help the kids to be the best they can be to finish the year up strong as we are definitely 5 th graders in training! Some are taking to this challenge very well. Fast Direct has all grades and missing work updated. Make sure we are not going to summer break too early. The children are dismissed after the meet. It will be a fun day. We have a final spelling test and reading test Friday morning before the track meet. MIDDLE SCHOOL F.L.Y. – Mrs. Heitman: Cinco De Mayo F.L.Y. tonight, 5:30 – 7:30 Mrs. Scott: I’m back!! Last week's trip with our 8th grade class and parents ranks in the top 2 trips of my life. We had many stops but the main attraction being Mount Rushmore. It was everything and more for what I was expecting! We also spoke with Lutheran alumni, Kristen Brunkow O’Shea. Kristen has many ties to our church and school. Kristen and I graduated from First Lutheran together in 2006. We were confirmed into our church the same year. Kristen is now a Kansas State Senator and has been involved in some heavy issues for her state. She is the perfect example of leading life with her faith. I couldn’t have asked for a better speaker to speak with our students. 8th Grade Parents: as promised, I have scheduled a field trip for the 8th grade to Alabaster Caverns and the Salt Plains. We are set to leave on Monday, May 17th. Please have the permission slips and money to me by May 13th. The cost is $5 for the kids, $10 for adults. Mrs. Hanson: Thanks again to all of those who volunteered and chaperoned our 6th and 7th grade trips last week. I hope everyone enjoyed their time! If you ended up only driving your student, please make sure you have paid your adult portion of the trip, we cannot be in the red for a field trip like this. 6th and 7th grade students will become the teachers from the rest of the school year. Everyone has chosen the chapter they are most interested in, will learn, and teach to their classmates. We are in the learning stages now. There will be only 2 major due dates so students can work at their own pace and also learn how to manage their time. All learning assignments are due this Friday. All teaching materials will be due next Tuesday. 8th grade is going to do a similar activity, but each student will be learning and researching a specific organelle in cells that they will teach their classmates about. But before that, 8th grade will have taken their genetics test today, Wednesday. All classes will have a comprehensive final over everything they have learned this year. May 18, the last full day of school, all students will take a multiple choice test containing questions from chapters they covered during the school year. We will take class time to review for this test. Since it's the end of the school year, there are a lot of things we need to keep in mind: (3)
1. Late/current work - we are almost done, but work is still being assigned, learning is still occurring. However, I will no longer be chasing down late work, late slips will not be sent home, and students will be responsible for their own work. I am not accepting any late/missing work from 6/7th grade because we have already taken the test and moved on. 8th grade had until today to get any late/absent work in from the genetics unit. 2. Graduation Dinner/Service - 6/7th grade: ONLY 7th grade will be serving and helping with dinner. All students are expected to participate. Please be in the cafeteria by 5:30 pm. ALL 6th & 7th graders will be singing during the service. Service starts at 7 pm. Please be in the church by 6:45 pm. 3. Turning in all supplies Chromebook with case and charger (you will be charged for any missing/broken piece.) Textbooks (you will be charged for any damage not typical of gentle use) 4. 8th Grade Pictures - 8th grade parents and students, please send me pictures from elementary school events. Speight and Kirchner, please send me baby pictures of the boys. I need all pictures by May 7 or they will not be included in the video. If you read this chatter article, please send me a FastDirect message saying so. I will make it worth your while. Mrs. Kester: We are almost at the finish line, folks! HISTORY students are on their final chapter of the school year. For seventh graders, this covers the geography, history, and way of life in the tropical North. For sixth graders, this focuses on early civilizations that range from India's Indus Valley and Mauryan Empire to its Gupta Empire. For eighth graders, this covers the Federalist era where they study American history's greatest celebrities: Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, and Madison; some of whom are carved in Mount Rushmore, that colossal structure they just visited on their recent fieldtrip to state capitols and this awesome national memorial! In RELIGION, students are closing out their Biblical studies with Moses (G7), Joseph, (G6), and the parables of Jesus (G8), while my homeroom is preparing for our National Day of Prayer set for this Thursday. These are some of my favorite Bible units, and I hope your children are growing from these historical stories! In FRENCH, students are engaging verbs en français by playing a classic childhood game but with a French twist - Simone Says! Then, they slip into detective mode to memorize les couleurs in a quick round of iSpy! As we begin to wrap things up for the year, all grades are looking forward to our class "finales," as I like to call them. In HISTORY, this will be an all-out Family-Feud style gameday over our final chapter for those with no behavior marks between now and then. For RELIGION, G8 students will prepare to host our last FLCS chapel service, G7 will work on a song sure to bless, and G6 will rehearse for their in-class musical on the story of Joseph. FRENCH students will try their hand at baking with a professional baker then take their fieldtrip to a local pâtisserie! It is sure to put the yum in bon appétit!! The end of the school year is quickly approaching, and with that, lots of events and special days are on our calendar. Please be diligent in handing in assignments if you are absent. 6th and 7th grade will be taking their final grammar test next week. 8th graders have submitted their college reports and are presenting their Power Point presentations next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We are also trying our best to finish reading Anne Frank before school gets out! This Friday is the track meet and next Friday is the 8th grade skip day trip. I will be sending information on that through Fast Direct closer to our trip. Finally, thank you, Students and Parents, for all your wonderful gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week. Cheer- Mrs. Heitman: Congratulations to our 2021-2022 Cheerleaders: Karsyn Hunter, Khloe Andrews , London Pettigrew – Captain, Kylie Kozarevich, Jordyn Heitman - Culture Captain, and Gabby Loughridge. FLS Cheer is looking forward to a great season! We will attend FCC Cheer camp in Waxahachie, TX where we will learn new skills and grow closer together with Christ as we look forward to competitions this fall! We will hold a car wash fundraiser on May 22nd at FLS - find a cheerleader to purchase tickets and help us reach our goals!
