Covid Update - We believe all of our teachers/staff have had the option to get the Covid shot, and we would like to drop the requirement of masks and shields soon, BUT WE WANT your opinion first. Please let Mr. Birnbaum know ASAP if you are against the dropping of the requirement for your class/building.

And now, it’s time for the CARDINAL SHOUTOUT; a place for us to recognize how talented and diversified our students are! Congratulations to all of our Ponca City high school seniors! We want to give a shout out to Emma Valgora and Ryan Turnipseed for being in the top TEN of their class.

PARKING LOT WONKINESS ON FRIDAY!: In preparation for this weekend’s Paul Schatte Memorial Cook-Off, the main parking lot on 5th street will be semi-chained off on Friday and accessible only to FLS families dropping off/-picking up their kids. There will be volunteers at the entrance who will let you in, but come prepared to slow down so that the volunteers can verify that you are, indeed, a parent.

FREDDY’S NIGHT is Thursday, April 29 from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. All you have to do is have dinner at Freddy’s!

When the cashier is ready to take your order, tell them you are there in support of First Lutheran School, and Freddy’s will donate 15% of your purchases (on that day, during those hours) on dine-in, carryout, and drive-thru orders (sorry, not valid with online/delivery orders). Tell your friends, family, neighbors, and complete strangers. It doesn’t cost you anything more than the cost of your dinner!

SCHATTE MEMORIAL EXTRAVAGANZA: We invite our church & school families and the Ponca City community to join us Saturday, May 1st (THIS SATURDAY!) in the FLS parking lot for live music, scavenger hunt, vendors, and a BBQ Cookoff! Do all your Mother’s Day and graduation shopping in one place while tasting some of the best BBQ around!

Tasting kits can be purchased for $12 the day of the event – no need to purchase in advance! If you didn’t order pictures, and want to, or ordered but want more, you have until June 30 to order from the proofs that were sent home. If you use the coupon attached to this chatter, you will get 10% off of your order, if you order by the date on the form. We have a very (1)

limited supply of extra class pictures. If you would like to purchase one, contact the office quickly. They are $12 + tax = $13.08 each; checks should be made payable to LifeTouch.

REPORT CARD PICKUP will be Friday, May 28 (closed for lunch from 1:00 – 2:30. Remember to check your accounts; any past due school balances or money owed for missing library books, etc. is due before we will release report cards or certificates.

If you are leaving us with a credit in any of your accounts and wish to leave it to a needy family, talk with Connie in the office and she’ll make sure it gets (anonymously) to the account of a school family who can use the help.

Graduation, Birthday, Disney, Amazon, WalMart, Teacher appreciation gifts needed? Get your gift cards from our office and earn money for the school. We have many on hand but can order specific ones for you also. Stop by the office to see what’s available in stock and to order.

FLS TRACK MEET, 1ST-8TH GRADES, MAY 7, 10:00 – 2:00!: The yearly track meet is a week away. All students 1st grade and up will participate in a school-wide track meet, competing against their classmates. On the day of the track meet, parents are encouraged to attend, and we ask you lend a hand if possible; please contact the office if you can help out for an hour or more. Students have the option of leaving at the end of afternoon events, at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Please check out with your student’s homeroom teacher before leaving.

The kids will spend a lot of time outside, so be sure to apply and send sunscreen for the kids to apply during the day if it’s going to be sunny, and send a jacket/hoodie if it is a cool morning (with their name in it of course). Our 7th graders will be running a concession stand, with the proceeds going to fund their trip to Washington D.C. next year. Send money with your student if they wish to purchase lunch or drinks/snacks at the concession stand. If you need to pick up your student early that day, please come extra early as it will take time to track down your student at their events.

SUMMER DAYCARE PACKETS are available in the office and in daycare. If you want your child to attend summer daycare, you must sign up; we have limited space available. PS3 and under, if you didn’t return the blue / green sheet with your choice, please confirm with Ms. Heidi or Connie in the office to make sure you are on the list.

SUMMER SKILLS WORKBOOKS: In just a few 20-30 minute sessions a week, students can reinforce previously learned academic skills without additional screen time. Summer Skills books meet the standards of all 50 states as well as the Common Core. Our books are available for pre-k through high school for math, language arts, foreign language and more. See attached order form if you are interested.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE… HELP US FIND THE RIGHT PERSON FOR YOUR KIDS: – First Lutheran School is looking for help in daycare, for the summer and for the school year. In addition to being 18 or older, able to be fingerprinted and pass a background test, applicants also need to have a positive attitude, be dependable, and have a personality, language, and behavior (and facebook page) that is appropriate when working with children. They need to be physically able to pick up small children to change diapers as needed, and be willing to work with children of all ages. You may direct questions to Ms. Heidi Daley on FastDirect or at 580-762-1124 or by calling the school office at 580-762-9950, stop by the school or daycare office to get an application, or print your own at www.fastdir.com/flcspc under the “links” tab on the left. Please pass the word to relatives, neighbors, college students, etc. who you think would work well with children.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: WE praise God for each of you and we especially praise God for the teachers and staff that have blessed us through this stressful Covid year. Please show them even more LOVE and support during the upcoming teacher appreciation week.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: I hope everyone is having a fantastic week! This week we are learning all about the letters Y and U and the sounds they make. We are also reviewing skills we have already learned throughout the year.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: April Reading Challenge ends on Friday. Please return all slips to me by May 3rd. Our last book order is due to me or online by Friday, May 7th. KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Our class would like to wish Cassius a happy birthday today! We also hope the older kids have a great time on their school trip this week! Wow, only three weeks left of school. Kids please keep working hard on sight words and your reading homework so you will be ready for first grade. I hope everyone has an exceptional week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory for Friday is the 9th Commandment - You shall not covet your neighbor's house. We are very excited about our field trip on Friday. Make sure to bring a sack lunch and drinks. Parents, we will meet you out the front doors around 11:15. Just a reminder that book orders are due tomorrow (Thursday), if you would like to order books for the summer. Have a great week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: To God Be The Glory! I'm proud of these almost third graders for conquering our first achievement tests. It seemed we did fairly well over all. Thank you so much for our nutritious snacks to give us extra brain power. We're excited about our next AR reward. Be watching for more information. Happy May Birthday to Easton, Lorelei, and Everly. THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: We are approaching the final stretch. I know the kids are fading, but we still have work to get through. Grades are all up to date, please let me know if you have any questions. This week: Memory: 1 John 2:1-2, due by Friday. Math: Test next week. We only have one more test after that one. We got this!! Reading: Paragraph and test this Friday. We are almost done with these! A.R. - goals are due by next Friday. We still have some students that need points. Please read with your child at home to help them out. Book Reports: Our posters and papers were due today. I cannot wait to see everyone dressed up for Friday. Parents, please join up at 10:30 in the gym. Don't forget to bring your money to turn our celebrities on. If you have any question please let me know. This year has gone by so fast!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Continue to work on the final touches for our Wax Museum Project. The notes that have gone home have all of the final details! Posters, reports, and presentations are this week. Please ask me if you have any questions. I am so proud of how we have done with this project! Once candling was finalized we are down to a few eggs in each incubator. Hatching should happen around May 3rd. Some of us are really making great gains on AR goals! Help the kids to stay on top of their goal by reading chapter books daily. We all want to finish the year out strong, & to do our best to work on being fifth graders. Scholars need to make sure that they are being thorough in all work.

Please look at grades with students on a weekly basis to help students do their best. Blessings as we focus on Christ’s love for us!

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: We're looking forward to our field trip to Wichita on Friday. Thank you, parents, for making it possible for us to go places. We couldn't do it without you! Tomorrow holds our spelling, reading and social studies test 6. Blessings!

MIDDLE SCHOOL F.L.Y. – Mrs. Heitman: No F.L.Y tonight. Join us tonight for the new Pastor watch party, 6:30, in the church.

Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings from a somewhat empty middle school! What a weird week it's been! Our eighth grade class is on their Mount Rushmore trip, and the seventh and sixth grade classes are "field-tripping" in OKC this past Monday and in Hutchinson, Kansas, on Thursday and Friday! What wonderful teachers and parents we have to make these opportunities available to our students! As soon as everyone is back next week, we will pick up where we left off in grammar and literature. All classes should expect a grammar test late next week! That's all for now!

Mrs. Scott: Greetings from the 8th Grade on our way to Mount Rushmore! Along the way, we stopped in to meet with Kansas State Senator, Kristen O’Shea.

Mrs. O’Shea is a graduate of First Lutheran School.

Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-7, 2021 Help us show our appreciation for all that our teachers do for our children!

Thank you for all of your encouragement to our staff through the year, and especially during this special week.

Monday – Our students are BLOOMING because of you!

Pick some flowers and bring them to your teacher. Each unique flower represents the unique student in their class.

Tuesday – Take a BREAK, FAST! Bring a breakfast or brunch item for your teacher or something for the whole staff. Tomorrow we will have a luncheon for the staff in the church fellowship hall from 11 to 12:30. You can bring your item by the school office today, but have your name on your container to that we can get it back to you.

Wednesday – It is a TREAT to have you as a teacher!

Bring a little something for the staff luncheon today from 11 – 12:30 or consider a gift card for the teacher to get themselves something later in the week.

Thursday – Throw Back Thursday!

Give a WORD of encouragement to your child’s current or past teacher(s) letting them know how much you appreciate everything they have done for your child.

Friday – Thanks for taking STOCK in our students!

Let’s fill up our teachers’ supplies! Bring pens, pencils, tape, white out, post-its, paperclips, highlighters, markers, stickers, or any other neat teacher supplies.
