COVID UPDATE:

I love the long weekends to get everyone away from each other to hopefully decrease the spread of germs. Three classes with perfect attendance on this Tuesday 2/22/22. A boy or two out in a variety of classes and three girls out from the whole school and none for illness.

And now, it’s time for the CARDINAL SHOUTOUT; a place for us to recognize how talented and diversified our students are!

Congratulations to Karsyn Hunter for winning Blue Ribbon Breed Champion & many other ribbons while showing her pig Tuesday. Also a big WaaaaHoooo to the Varsity Boys for taking Championship in the Bronze Level at the State of Texas Lutheran Tournament.

Kendra Mayer is a former FLS parent, School Board Member, and current church member. Her brother’s house recently burned and the family was left with nothing.

The community has already blessed them with clothes, but now her brother is tasked with fixing their house and they need supplies. Things like plywood, boards, nails, screws, sheet rock, tools, etc. If you are willing and able, please consider donating these items/gift cards to purchase them to Lowes/Brandts/Hughes or local restaurants, and we will pass your donations on to them. Obviously, if you are donating sheet rock/plywood/boards, please contact the office and we’ll get you a phone number to get in contact with the family directly…please don’t bring that to my office! Thank you all in advance for helping this father and his daughter get back in their house!

ASH WEDNESDAY - Next Wednesday, March 2, is the start of the Lenten Season of the Church Year. For the next seven weeks we will be focusing on the suffering that our Lord endured on this earth so that we could have eternal life.

Next Wednesday, for Chapel, we will do the imposition of ashes, which is when Pastor will make the sign of the cross on our foreheads with ashes (representing our burnt up/destroyed sins). Students do not have to participate, but most will.

The SCHATTE MEMORIAL COOKOFF WILL BE HELD MAY 7TH! We are looking for volunteers for that day to help with tickets, serving, setup, cleanup, or any capacity you’re willing to serve! Contact Jennifer Heitman for more info at flcsnextgen@gmail.com.

ENROLLMENT FORMS…: Enrollment forms for 2022-2023 went home with 2/9/22 Chatter. If you didn’t get one or can’t find it, you can print another one at www.fastdir.com/flcspc under “links”, or stop by the office. 2022-2023 Enrollment is currently limited to current families, but opens to the public on March 1.

If you know someone interested in FLC&S, have them stop by our Open House on Monday, March 7 from 3:30 – 5:15 p.m.. If they have a student in 1st – 6th grades and they list you on the enrollment sheet as referring them, you will receive a $200 tuition credit next January, if they remain enrolled the whole first semester!

Mr. Birnbaum: What will tomorrow bring? Sounds like it is going to be COLD. Stay warm & stay safe. Please read & respond to the attached Senate Bill in this Chatter concerning paying your school tuition.

CARDINAL CARE – Ms. Vap: For AGES 3 & UP: The ORANGE Sign-Up Sheet for the half day that school dismisses on March 11th at 11:20 am is available in the lobby on the check-in table. For ALL AGES: The GREEN Sign-Up Sheet for the week of Spring Break (March 14th-18th) is available in the lobby, posted on the wall. Please sign up as soon as possible if you are wanting daycare during those times so that we can determine what days we will offer daycare, make sure we are staffed appropriately, and make lunch arrangements.

CAFETERIA – Mrs. Lyons: I would like to remind everyone that the menu may change, based on what food is available at what times. We are having problems getting food in.

Also, I would like to remind everyone about bringing soft drinks & fast food into breakfast or lunch. This a BIG NO! COMPUTER/LIBRARY – Mrs. Manning: We had a special guest come visit us last Wednesday to show students how to throw clay on a pottery wheel. Many, many thanks to Alena Jennings from the Doodle Academy for gifting us her time and talent! Please remember that each student needs to have a set of cheap, corded earbuds with them when they come to computer lab! Please check with your student and see if theirs are still working. MUSIC  – Mrs. Brey: Elementary students are learning how to speak rhythms and how to play them. These kids come up with the most creative ways of playing music and it's so fun to see. Fourth and Fifth grade students are working on "Children of the Heavenly Father" for their upcoming performance on March 27 th at 9am. Seventh grade students will learn an arrangement of "Hosanna, Loud Hosanna" for their performance in church on April 10th at 9am.

AUDITIONS- Mrs. Brey - On the off chance that we have a snow day or two this week, auditions will be held over Google Classroom! Check Mrs. Brey's google classroom (6th, 7th, and 8th grade music) to find the code to the "Auditions" Google Classroom. Mrs. Brey and Ms. T will be online during your audition time, ready to see you act and sing in real time!

Middle school students are performing in church at 9:00 a.m. on the following dates:  7th Grade: April 10  8th Grade: May 8 PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Daine: Wow! This weather is crazy, 75 one day and snow the next!! I hope you are all staying safe and warm. I cannot wait for Spring!! We will continue working on scissor skills and social skills. Our letter this week is 'Z' and our number is zero. Have a blessed rest of the week!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: I hope everyone had a nice little break! This week we are reviewing the letters Q, V, and X. We are also learning about opposites. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Brr! Winter is back! I hope you enjoyed the long weekend and nice weather on Monday! It has been a busy couple of weeks! We have celebrated Valentine’s Day, the 100 th Day of School, Twosday, and next week is Read Across America Week. We are doing a week long celebration and the next week is Lutheran Schools Week. Be sure to read the Chatter and look for notes about upcoming events. I sent the Dr. Seuss Week note home yesterday with our distance learning packets. Although we have had some nice days, please remember that most days we go outside and sometimes the weather changes during the day. Please make sure your child has a jacket every day; you can keep a hoodie in their backpack if that makes it easier. Book orders are in folders today and are due back to me or online by Friday, March 4th. Book It reading calendars are due to me by the 4th also. Our Bible words this week are, Jesus said, "Let the children come to Me." Matthew 19:14 We are finishing the Letters Gg, Ww, Xx and the number 16. Have a Blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Wow, the weather has been crazy cold lately! I am ready for the warm weather to stay! This week we may have more distance learning days (I don't know). I am sending the work home Tuesday because –2–

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Our memory work for the rest of the school year will be the 10 Commandments.

Friday is the 1st Commandment - You shall have no other Gods. We have been working hard on a book that is going to be published. Coming home today is information and order forms for this book. These need to be returned to me by next Friday, March 4. This Friday is show and tell! Our theme this month is to bring your favorite stuffed animal. Happy birthday to Jillian today!

SECOND GRADE – Ms. Felton: Thank you to all of you for the donations for our cookie mix in a jar project!!! The students loved making them, and it was a great hands-on learning experience for them in measuring and fractions! With all of the donations, 24 jars were made! We are also still taking donations of nonperishable food items through Wednesday, March 2! Thank you also to the Campbells for the whiteboard markers! Since Two’s Day has passed, we are officially going to be into our normal rhythm and units. We are full speed ahead for historical thinking and people, habitats, and expository nonfiction reading and writing. We are also exploring suffixes this week and prefixes next week. Even with snow and ice days, we are trying to stay on track, especially with spelling and memory. Memory next week will be the 8 th Commandment with the meaning. We will continue with our subtraction lessons interspersed with other lessons, and have a subtraction test using our subtraction strategies at the end of next week.

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: What is going on with this weather? I think the kids are just as frustrated as us adults. I am sending work home again, just in case. Please check FastDirect for updates on the class. If you need your FastDirect log in, please contact Connie in the office (580-762-9950). This week: Spelling Test on Friday. Memory: New memory sheet coming home next week. Reading: We are getting closer to finishing Ivan. The kids are really enjoying it.

Science: We are starting a new chapter on Force and Motion. Social Studies: We are finishing up the branches of the government. Look for a test next week. A.R. This quarter is coming quickly to an end. Please ask your child where they are toward their goals. Grades: Grades are all up to date. Please look them over and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful week!!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Stay warm with the Lord in this winter season. I can really see big light bulbs come on when division is practiced properly at home to reinforce what happens at school with the process of questions being asked to be successful. Make sure you are looking at Fast Direct as we are wrapping up the 3rd quarter for the year. Make sure kids are getting all work turned in, giving full effort, and asking questions. West region is next region to study for states and capitals. We will have a practice test later this week. Keep reading for AR…you can make it!

5th GRADE RELIGION – Mrs. Brey: 5th grade just completed their memory work quiz over the books of the Old Testament. Next week, we will be taking another memory quiz over the books of the New Testament. This week, we are looking over the Nile, Tigris, and Euphrates rivers and how they all benefited the people in the area. By doing this, we are also looking over the accounts of Genesis and Exodus.

5th Grade & Middle School 6th – 8th MATH – Mr. McKinley: 6th and 7th welcome back!! We are finishing up chapter 7 and preparing for the chapter 7 test on Friday....weather permitting.

SCIENCE – Mrs. Porter-Cain: Looks like we will be walking in a wonder land for a bit longer!

5th Grade Science- We are still making our way through elementary substances and compounds!

6th Grade Science- They are nearing the finish line of learning about the individual elements on the periodic table & will soon be diving into seeing what happens when we combine different things together! What will the REACTion be??

7th Grade Science- They are almost finished with their section on Volcanoes- be expecting a test next week!

8th Grade Science- We are about to wrap up our Genetic Mutations/ Biotechnology section- I think the kids have really found parts of it to be interesting!

PE- While starting on track training we will also be enjoying fun games!

Basketball- WOW! What a weekend in Texas for the Varsity Girls and Boys! Girls finished 4th in the Silver Bracket and Boys finished 1st in Bronze! The kids had a great weekend together and played some great basketball! We thank God for our athletes and the opportunities He gives us to participate and compete! Both teams are hopeful for a bid to the National Tournament!

LANGUAGE – Ms. Kester: Whether sun, rain, snow, or sleet, this is how it's going down this week:  Thursday, February 24 - Literature quiz (G8) and new IXL assignments (G5-G8)  Friday, February 25 - Memory work (G6 & G7), grammar homework (G6-G8), and reading logs (G5 - G8) due  Monday, February 28 - IXL assignments due (G5-G8)  *G7 book chapter is due March 7 Enjoy the rest of your week!

SOCIAL STUDIES – Mr. Brey: 5th Grade: Still slowly going through colonization. We will have a quiz on it next week.

6th Grade: Students are learning about South America. Map quiz Thursday.

7th Grade: Students are exploring WWII. We are about to get to the fighting and will compare fighting in the Eastern front to the Western front, as well as outlining major battles.

8th Grade Friday will be the Quiz on Reconstruction. All of next week students will study for their final. More information on that next week!

Student Council – Mrs. Harbeson: The middle school winter dance is T H I S Friday, February 25. The details are on the next page.

Dance Theme: Through the Wardrobe When: Friday, February 25, 2022 Time: 7-9 p.m.

Where: FLS gym Cost: $5 per person ($2.50 will be given to the Lutheran church pantry fund and $2.50 will go towards the cost of the dance.

Who is invited: All current 6th, 7th, and 8th FLS students.

This is not a "date dance." The winter dance is a time for all of the students to dress up, have fun with their friends, and listen to good music. Also, please remember that this is a middle school dance. Fancy cars, suits, and dresses are not appropriate. Let's save that experience for our students when they go to their high school prom.

Chaperones: Mrs. Harbo and the middle school teachers.

Parents are welcome to stay and take pictures when you drop your student off but should plan on leaving by 7:30.

We'll take a group picture at 9, so if you want to, come a few minutes early.

Dress: This is a semi-dressy dance. No sweats, shorts, or t-shirts.

Ladies - dresses or pants. Dresses may not be strapless. (Spaghetti straps are ok for the dance only.) No pointy heeled shoes. Please follow the school dress code for appropriate length and fit of your dress.

Gentlemen - Button-down shirts or polos. Slacks or nice jeans. (No very distressed jeans or jeans with holes.)

Food: The student council will be providing snacks and drinks. However, it is strongly encouraged that you eat dinner before coming to the dance. In past years, a parent or two from the class will organize a dinner for the students. If your class chooses to do this, please take into consideration the cost of the meal so that every student can afford to go.
