FIRST LUTHERAN SCHOOL - PONCA CITY, OK 2022-2023 FEES We praise God for you partnering with us. Our goal is to provide quality Christian education with the best use of our God given talents and resources. Total tuition and enrollment fees provide a little over 55% of the cost of our school operations. The balance is made up from a generous subsidy from First Lutheran Church, individual/business donations, active parent and family involvement. (If enrollment is an economic hardship, there are scholarship opportunities. Ask for applications.) We also encourage family involvement to reduce costs. High enrollment helps keep the school vibrant and active while spreading the costs over more families. Encourage others to join our school or to consider a tax deductible donation so that others can benefit from a quality, Christian education.

COVID UPDATE:

2/4&5 2/13  2/18 2/21

6th Grade Tournament @ FLS 6th Grade Sings in church Curriculum Writing – No School Parent Teacher Conferences – No School

We had a lot of teachers out last week and one as of today. We had GREAT subs that stepped in and kept things rolling. As of 2/1/22 we have four classes with perfect attendance in PK-8th, one family out with strep, one with Covid quarantine because of exposure, two students out sick playing it safe.

And now, it’s time for the CARDINAL SHOUTOUT; a place for us to recognize how talented and diversified our students are! Way to go to Ms. Colvin’s, Ms. Kelly’s, Ms. Miller’s, and Ms. Birnbaum’s classes for bringing 229 cans of food for the food pantry, to celebrate the 100th day of school! Great Job! JOKE OF THE WEEK: Why are teddy bears never hungry? A: Because they’re always stuffed.

DESPERATELY SEEKING SUBS: We need your help. We have lost several substitutes in the last year, and our list is getting short. We need people occasionally that will help us by subbing. Sometimes subbing as a t.a., sometimes in a classroom, occasionally we need help in the lunchroom, or (rarely) in the office. Do you know someone that could use a few extra $ now and then?! Maybe a student in a local college that could sub in the afternoon? Maybe a stay at home mom? Please send us names and phone numbers of people 18 or older and we’ll contact them when we need help. They can always specify what grades/days/areas they are willing to work, and they can always say no when we call, if the timing doesn’t work out for them. Please, Please, help us find a few subs! VALENTINE’S DELIVERIES: To minimize disruptions to the classroom, Valentine deliveries will not be delivered to the classrooms until it is time for class parties at 2:30. If you are having something delivered for a student in the Early Childhood Building, please give the delivery company directions on where/how to deliver it to the daycare offices (on Albany in-between 3rd & 4th Street). If items for the ECE Building get delivered to the This office, Photo you may need to bring your child to the office to pick them up when you pick your child up after school. by try to get them delivered, but it is a busy afternoon, there is usually more than we can take in one trip, We Unknow balloons have previously escaped in the wind, etc. Thank you for your understanding! n

Today is the Mid-quarter again and March will be busy. Please keep on top of grades. CARDINAL CARE – Ms. Vap: Parents, we encourage everyone to make sure your FastDirect account is up and working with the inclement weather we are expecting later this week. They will send a message from there if the school will be closing. I will also send out a message via Brightwheel to all parents if the decision to close is made. Everyone stay safe! COMPUTER/LIBRARY – Mrs. Manning: Please remember that each student needs to have a set of cheap, corded earbuds with them when they come to computer lab! Please check with your student and see if theirs are still working. MUSIC  – Mrs. Brey: Sixth grade is singing in church at 9am on Sunday, February 13th! In the classroom, middle school students have started learning about our composer of the month: John Williams. We will spend this month looking more into his music and learning more about percussion and drumming techniques. Elementary students are working on solfege and learning high notes and low notes. All classes are working on the direction of notes and what that looks like when it's written down. Middle school students are performing in church at 9:00 a.m. on the following dates:  6th Grade: February 13  7th Grade: April 10  8th Grade: May 8 PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Daine: Welcome to February. About our Field Trip on Thursday to Cowley College at 12:15, we will go if the weather permits it. Just a heads up, we will have our Valentines’ party on Monday February 14th at 2:30 in the afternoon, but parents cannot come due to covid; sorry. Please have an outstanding week! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Welcome February! This week was our 100th day of school, Groundhog Day, and a trip to see Junie B Jones. As I am writing this on Tuesday morning, the weather is not looking good for Thursday, so we will have to keep an eye on that! There is a chance that we may have to cancel our trip. But if we do go, we will plan on leaving around 12:15. Memory verse for Friday is Philippians 4:13 - I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. Thank you for the canned goods - we counted 229! Turn in your January Reading Logs by this week to get the Pizza Hut Certificate. I pray that we all stay healthy! SECOND GRADE – Ms. Felton: Happy day of TWOS (2/2/22)! We will also be celebrating an even bigger TWOSday on Tuesday, 2/22/22, especially since we are 2nd grade (so many 2s!)! Our field trip for today was postponed, which is a bummer for sure, but we will have another field trip coming up this spring. Students will have a math test next Tuesday over adding doubledigit numbers with and without regrouping. We are looking at a social studies assessment over historical figures next Friday, which will be notes from reading and a poster project of a historical figure selected by each student. The guidelines and rubric for that will be out this week. Spelling lists and the 10 Commandments with Meanings were sent –6–

This month is starting off crazy already. Field Trip: I will keep you all posted if we are able to go another time. I am so sorry for any inconveniences this may cause. It is very rewarding when you stay on track of your goal as the goal goes on. Log on to see current progress! Remember to show ALL details on work, in particular math assignments, especially with long division. We never get results we are happy with when we rush & give half effort for anything. This is true for any task in life, sports or academics. Mid-terms are out today. Continue to work on being amazing 4th graders & giving the prep for 5th grade as we ramp into routine. Blessings! 5th GRADE RELIGION – Mrs. Brey: We've been studying the geography of Israel. Students are working on posters that will be due this Friday, February 4th. All grade levels will take a quiz this week on their respective lessons if the weather is in our favor. Additionally, grammar tests are scheduled for next week. Please encourage your child to ask questions during class and to visit me for extra help if they need it. I allow entire class periods specifically for this, even this week. For the quiz schedule for literature, all dates and chapters have been posted for a while on your child's Google Classroom page under Literature. Eighth graders have even had a study guide for a while for their books. IXL assignments are now assigned every Thursday and due by class time the following Monday. Your child is allowed the entire class time each Thursday to work on them. For parents who do not yet know, students are also given the entire class time on Fridays to read and/or prepare for their upcoming literature quizzes and reading logs. In Religion, students are differentiating among original intent, interpretation, opinion, and application concerning Bible passages, namely their memory work for this week. The test for their memory work is Friday, weather permitting. As always, reach out if you have questions and reach up if you have troubles. :-) God bless! –7–
