And now, it’s time for the CARDINAL SHOUTOUT; a place for us to recognize how talented and diversified our students are! * Congratulations to Timothy Crank, Kyle King, and their 200 yard Free Relay swim team. They won 2nd place at the OKS Division II swim meet this weekend and qualified for the State Championship in March. *Congratulations to both our 6th grade girls & boys basketball teams for taking second place last weekend in our tournament, and both of our varsity basketball teams who took third place in Topeka Lutheran Basketball tournament this past weekend. Congratulations to the players and coaches.

RE-ENROLLMENT GIVE-AWAY: Several of you have already brought in your Re-Enrollment papers. If you enroll by the end of February, you will get one entry into a drawing for a $25 Gift Card for each 1/3 of the enrollment fee that you pay by the date of the drawing. (An enrollment fee paid in full = 3 entries for the drawing.)

SIGNING DAY/OPEN HOUSE: We invite you to attend our signing day on Monday, March 9 from 3:30 to 5:30. IF you bring a new family on that date and they enroll in our 1st-6th grade in the next six months, you will get a $50 Walmart Card in an addition to the $200 credit on your tuition in January if they remain enrolled through the fall semester.

SURVEY NEEDED - Ladies/Gentlemen, every five years our school goes through an accreditation process to maintain State and National Accreditation standings. A survey is attached that has questions based on the seven accreditation standards. Please take time to complete the attached survey & we will also fastdirect you access to complete the survey online. WE GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT!!!

ASH WEDNESDAY: Next Wednesday - We will commemorate Ash Wednesday at Chapel next Wednesday (Feb. 26).

Pastor will talk about our sins and the need for the Savior. Everyone will then have the opportunity to come up and get a cross smudged on their foreheads with ashes of burnt palm branches. This is not required but we just want to keep you informed. You are always welcome to join us for chapel.

USED METRO CARDS: If you have visited Washington D.C. and have money left on your MetroCard, our 8th Grade class would love to use up your remaining balance on their trip this spring. If you would be willing to donate it to them, please bring your card(s) to Connie in the office, or leave them in the black mailbox in front of her office (we check it daily). THANK YOU! NOC’S PRESENTATION “ALL SHOOK UP” will be presented February 20-22, at 7:30 pm and Sunday the 23rd at 2 pm in the Kinzer Performing Arts Center in Tonkawa. Admission is free to this Spring 2020 Musical Comedy, featuring an All New Elvis story featuring Elvis hits. Come watch our very own Kylie Flowers in this entertaining, free, comedy!

CAMP LUTHERHOMA: Summer Camp for youth and families is just around the corner! If you would like to gather your children and a few friends, or several families with children, and attend a Christian summer camp and/or family camp, the flyer and information is attached. We have additional flyers in the office with color pictures, if you are interested in more information. You do not need to be Lutheran to attend.

SCHOOL OFFICE NEEDS: We are running short on children’s chewable ibuprofen and acetaminophen, large (≥2 x 4) bandaids for skinned knees, and granola bars for those who are regretting skipping breakfast. If you are at the store and are willing to purchase and send a sealed bottle/box of any of these supplies to the office, we would appreciate it! We have enough adult ibuprofen and acetaminophen for the older kids to get us through the year. THANK YOU! BEREAVEMENT FELLOWSHIP: Grief support groups offer support and education by helping survivors cope with their emotions, new roles in life, and plans for the future. SCHOOL RE-EVALUATION: Every five years we go thru a thorough self-evaluation of our entire school program and then a visiting team of six professionals will come in October to verify our findings. If you would like to help serve on this process, please contact Principal Birnbaum.

FLS STUDENTS IN K8 ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE KIDS HEART CHALLENGE: Way to go students collecting money for the Kids Heart Challenge! You all have collected over $1,000.00 so far. Keep up the good work and continue to add points for the Olympics in a few weeks. Cash donations need to come in envelopes, and will be due in March. Big prizes will come after Spring Break. (If you haven’t, yet, be sure to download the app!)

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Can you believe it, there are only THREE weeks left in this third quarter? Please get your re-enrollment completed and get your gift from Connie. Last week, the Dinner-Auction forms with home with the Chatter. Only $10 in advance. This week is FREDDY's night on Thursday, talent show in a couple of weeks, and Parent Survey needed for our accreditation. Please stay up-to-date on everything go on.

PRE-SCHOOL & PRE-K SINGING IN CHURCH – Mrs. Schelp: Mrs. Colvin’s, Mrs. Gillespie’s, and Mrs. Kelley’s classes will be singing at First Lutheran Church’s worship service on Sunday, February 23 at 9:00am (please have your children in the Church foyer by 8:50).

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: They sang great in chapel today! Reminder that our class and Mrs. Kelly's class will be singing this Sunday, the 23rd, at 9 am. Picture Day on Thursday!! We are learning the letters Y, y and P, p.

We are learning numbers 14 and 15 as well as counting to 20. Dr. Seuss week will be March 2nd-6th. The year is flying by!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Thank you for all of the Valentines and thank you to all of the parents that helped with our party! Thank you for also surprising me and celebrating my birthday! Picture Day is tomorrow! Class pictures must be ordered and paid for before the picture is taken. Thanks for joining us for chapel this morning! We will sing in church on Sunday morning at 9:00am. KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Happy birthday to Aspyn on the 14th and to Rylan on the 21st! I hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend with Valentine’s Day and Presidents' Day off. It is hard to believe that we only have a week and a half left of February. The days seem to go so fast! Please keep reading and working on your child's Monday Folder, thank you! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: I pray that you had a nice 4 day weekend. Memory verse for Friday is Galations 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self2

control. Against such things there is no law. Please check your child’s folder today for the order form for our class book.

These order forms need to be returned back to me by Friday, Feb. 28. Let me know if you have any questions about ordering a book. Picture day is tomorrow! If you want a class picture, you need to bring the order form with payment by tomorrow! Have a great week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy Presidents' Day! Wasn't it great to have a four-day weekend? Thanks to our parents for providing a fun Valentine party and thanks for the sweet treats for me. I am blessed! We're on the seventh commandment this weekend. Thank you for continuing to help your child at home. Blessings!

THIRD GRADE – Coach Amanda (f/Mrs. Steichen): We are starting The One and Only Ivan this week! Parents – please make sure your kids are doing their homework! We have finished our Black History Month essay projects! Ask your 3rd grader who they chose to research!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: What a great break we had to be refreshed & share the LOVE of Christ! Keep sending in coats to wear as it is not spring yet. Applications for the school talent show are available in the classroom. All Valentine’s Day boxes were wonderful and had lots of hard work put into them. Very impressive! Congrats to Readyn for Most Creative/Unusual, Cailyn for Most Traditional, & Peyton for the Funniest. I amazed at the creativity & wide range of the ideas! Thank you for all of the Valentines that I received. They were very yummy and mean a lot to me. I can really see big light bulbs come on when division is practiced properly at home & school with the process of questions being asked to be successful. There is an extra division paper due on Friday to practice with for the steps. This is a short week with a reading test on Friday and memory due by Friday. Keep studying for states and capitals West region. Keep reading for AR, you can make it!

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: How delightful to have had a four day weekend! We're back into the swing of things now. Thanks to all that helped out with the Valentine's party last Thursday. We had a great time eating pizza and opening Valentine's cards. Our field trip to Exploration Place and Wichita Ice Center is a week from Friday. (February 28) Please have money and permission slips in no later than this Friday, February 21. Thank you so much! Blessings!

FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson: Since we are on the engineering train, we are going to start making connections with STEM. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). We are first going to think about what influence STEM has on the field of our future careers. Students may need some guidance (not answers) just how STEM is connected to areas like sports, education, emergency personnel positions, etc.

We will complete a few STEM challenges and be looking for STEM in real life.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FUTURE WASHINGTON D.C. ATTENDEES: If you need to make payments to your D.C. account, please note that you cannot make payments with a credit card. We will, however, accept checks, cash, money orders, etc. Thank you.

StuCo Middle School Dance THIS FRIDAY! Where: FLS Gym When: THIS FRIDAY!, February, 21 Who: All FLS middle school students Time: 7:00-9:30 Theme: Midnight in Paris Dress: Boys - slacks, button down shirts, polos / Girls - dresses, slacks (no jeans, t-shirts, hoodies) This is a dress-up event!

FLY NIGHT: All 6th-12th graders are invited to join us for FLY night every Wednesday from 5:30-7:00. We meet in the youth house for dinner and devotions, then head to the gym for games! Please have a ride available to pick you up at 7:00 pm.

WINTERJAM: Join us on Saturday, Feb 29th, for the WinterJam tour! All youth 6th-12th grade are invited to join us for this evening of Christian music and fellowship! The cost is $15 per person, this covers entry to the concert. Dinner will be provided. We will leave First Lutheran at 2:00 and return around midnight. Thanks to our volunteer drivers, we have 20 seats available, but they’re filling up fast! If you’re interested in attending (or driving), please see Jennifer Heitman for more details. Due to the limited number of seats available, seats will NOT be reserved until permission slips and fees have been turned in. This will be a first come, first serve, basis.

Tuesday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m., 8th graders & parents please go to the Howell Auditorium at Po-Hi to enroll for High School Mrs. Scott: General 6th Grade Math is working with units of measure. Advanced 6th Grade/General 7th Grade Math started Chapter 10 yesterday. Advanced 7th Grade is working with Function Notation. 8th Grade Algebra is solving linear systems by substitution. Advanced Algebra reviewed yesterday and will complete Chapter 8 Test today. We will begin Chapter 9 tomorrow.

6th Grade Religion: Memory work due today was the Sixth Commandment and its meaning. Memory work due on 2/26 is the Seventh Commandment and its meaning.

Mrs. Hanson: 7th and 8th grade fundraising order forms and money were due TODAY. PICTURE DAY TOMORROW, please make sure we are dressed nicely and look presentable! Also bring order forms if you would like to order class or individual pictures.

Hopefully everyone turned them in on time and thank you for that.

I hope to see all middle school students at the dance on Friday from 7-9:30 in the gym.

6th grade is using the periodic table to learn about elements and will be memorizing the metalloids and 5 metals

by Friday.

7th grade is seeing what new work/studies are being done in plate tectonics and will have a vocab quiz Friday.

8th grade is learning about amphibians as they complete at least one movie review for their vertebrate project

by Friday.

Mr. Covert: Time is just flying by this school year! I hope everyone enjoyed the long break, and is ready to get back to work!

Classes are going to continue where we left off. 8th grade is going to wrap up the Progressive Era this week. In 7th grade, we’ll finish off South Asia and then move a bit to the north to study Central Asia. As for 6th grade, we’re going to get close to ending the Middle Ages this week.

8th grade parents, the deadline for paying one-third of your remaining balance is TOMORROW, Thursday, February 20th! The airline is taking our payment that day, so I need one-third of what you owe by tomorrow!

I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we move through this third quarter and start closing in on the Lenten season! Blessings on your week!

Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings everyone! I'm sorry I didn't get an article in last week's Chatter, but thank you to Ms. Connie for taking care of that for me. I hope you all enjoyed your 4-day weekend and are ready to head into the home stretch of our final few weeks before Spring Break. Congratulations to our varsity basketball teams as they both brought home 3rd place from the Topeka tournament! Way to represent!

For all classes, we have begun our week with Lesson 9 in Wordly Wise. Spelling and vocabulary tests for all will be next Tuesday, February 25.

Everyone also began new units in grammar today. 6th and 7th grade are beginning new novels this week and 8th grade is finishing up The Giver.
