COVID UPDATE

Covid Update - We went to Virtual Learning with all our Middle School last week. We only had the one Covid positive seventh grade student but we wanted to try doing online and it went REALLY well. We are not supposed to let students back if they have Covid but the student had a runny nose so it is REALLY difficult to determine how strict to be. Keep praying that we make the right decisions.

GRANDPARENTS DAY is for grandparents of students in the PS-3-year old through 8th Grade classes. It is a day set aside each year to honor and celebrate our grandparents! Grandparents are invited to come watch performances that the students have prepared for them, to visit their classrooms, visit the book fair together, and join their grandkids for lunch (K-8th only). The details on the day for your child’s grandparent’s day are below.

Grandparents will NOT be charged for lunch, but we still need Grandparent’s to RSVP (or parents to RSVP for them) to the school office as soon as possible so that we can have an accurate head count and enough food.

All children need to be signed out in the school office before leaving for the day. Please let Grandparent(s) know if they are taking their grandchild home, that they need to stop by the office and sign them out.

BOOK FAIR – MS. WARE: The book fair is in full swing! Muffins with Moms and Grandparents’ Day details follow. The last day to check out the book fair is November 24. KINDLES FOR SALE: We found a few more Kindle Fire’s that were left over after the middle school upgraded to ChromeBooks. The one’s we sold previously were 5 GB, so I believe that’s what these are, also. They do not come with charging cords or cases, but they are all charged so you can come look them over. They are first person with payment/first served, 1 for $25, 2 for $40. Stop by Connie’s office to take a look and/or purchase them. We only have 8 (one has a cracked screen), so don’t wait if you are interested.

COLLECTING PONCA CITY SANTA BUCKS: First Lutheran is collecting the Santa Shops Ponca 1st tickets that are given out at participating local businesses each time you make a purchase during the Christmas season. If you are willing to 2

donate yours to the school, please drop them by the school or leave them in the black mailbox in front of the administration building on or before Dec. 22. The earlier the better so that we can get them organized for the big night.

CHRISTMAS DECORATION DONATIONS: Do you have too many Christmas decorations? Do you have decorations you haven’t used in years and your kids have said they have plenty of their own? Well, we know just what you need to do with them! The Guild is collecting used Christmas decorations which they will be selling at the annual Christmas Market. Just gather them up and bring them to the Cry Room in the Narthex and they will do the rest.

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) at the church is now collecting used (clean) shoes and items for Baby Kits (see bottom of this Chatter for items needed). You may drop off these donations in the school office.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Can I just recommend some GREAT places to eat in Ponca? Have you tried El Potrillo on S. Waverly, especially the FLAN? Also Jim's Jumbo Burgers on South 4th is open for lunch. I especially recommend their Tater Tots. And WOW - Jalepeno Grill has knocked everything out the park. Support our School Families.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: Grandparent's Day is November 23rd. We still have spots for sign ups on class tag to send something. Please consider doing this. The children are getting really excited and working hard on their song! This week we are learning all about the letter C and the sound it makes. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Please remember to send a coat or jacket with your child's name in it every day. We go out for recess in the mornings and it is pretty cool most mornings. The canned food drive is going well.

Thank you for being so generous so that we can help other families. Grandparents' day is almost here! The kids have been working hard on their performance and gifts for our grandparents. If you haven't signed up to bring a treat for our event, please check the sign up on ClassTag to see what we need. We will dismiss at 11:00am on Monday the 23rd (our Grandparents' day) and will not have school the rest of the week. Our Bible words this week are Love the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 6:5 We are reviewing the letters that we have learned so far, Aa,Mm,Ss,Pp,Tt,Ii,Nn,Oo,Cc and learning the number 6 this week. Have a Blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Grandparents Day is next week on Monday the 23rd for child's last name starting with A to L (from 11:00-3:00) and on Tuesday the 24th for child's last name starting with M to Z (from 9:00-12:30). I hope to see all the children next week on Monday and Tuesday and all the grandparents on their corresponding day (Monday or Tuesday). The children and I are looking forward to the event! Our class would like to thank the Accreditation Team for coming to our school. Have a wonderful week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is Matthew 28:20 -I am with you always, to the end of the age. If you signed up to bring items for our Christmas Child box, please bring those to school by Friday. Thank you for helping us with this project! We have been busy preparing some special projects and some songs to share with our Grandparents next week. Please see the schedule in the chatter for times. Thank you Ms. Susie for all of the work on the Book Fair. I hope you will be able to check it out - special days and times have also been posted in the chatter. Reading Logs for November will be due after Thanksgiving break, on Dec. 1. Special Thanksgiving blessings to your families and I pray that you have a wonderful and healthy Thanksgiving!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Goll (for Mrs. Powell): What a busy week we've had. We've enjoyed seeing our NLSA visitors; we've been remembering Oklahoma's birthday; and we've been preparing for Grandparents' Day. We're also happy about the Book Fair. Thank you, Mrs. Manning. Also, thanks, Grandpa Dave, for fixing our broken bench. Ask your second grader about coins and measuring. Keep Mrs. Powell and her family in your prayers. Have an awesome week!

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Accreditation is over! The kids did awesome. Please be on the lookout for a note about dismissal. This is an area we as a building need to work on. This week: Reading: We started the Chocolate Touch; the kids are really getting in to it. Please ask them about it. Spelling: Unit 2 Review words test on Friday. We will not have a test next week. Unit 3, week 1 test will be after Thanksgiving. Book Report: Please be on the lookout for a book report project guide. If you have any questions please let me know. Social Studies: Starting a unit on Native Americans.

Science: Moving on to chapter 4: Ecosystems. Grandparents Day: Next week is our Grandparents Day; we are doing a play along with songs. Please let me know ASAP if your child will not be attending. Thank you! Remember: early dismissal on Tuesday and no school Wednesday through Friday. Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving.

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Thank you all for wearing your mask. Our health is really important to not be safe. Don’t forget your coat, to take your vitamins, and continue to stay healthy as God is showing His power in the weather. Keep reading for AR. We will complete the NE practice region this week. Test date is TBA. The kids know great tools to practice this and all regions. Please look for and follow the instructions on the orange dismissal slip sent home 3

yesterday. Contact the office if you have any questions. Midterms come out today. Please have the half slip of paper signed for Friday. Help the kids by staying on top of grades and assignments on Fast Direct. Grandparent’s day is right around the corner. Blessings as we prepare our hearts for the Lord!

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: We welcome Quinn and Peyton back after a 2 week absence. It's such a joy to have a full class! I pray that kids and parents stay well. We're like a family...when one of us is missing it's just not the same. :) Grandparents' Days are next Monday and Tuesday. We look forward to those special days. I wish you all a happy Thanksgiving. I hope you get to spend quality time with family and friends. God is so good to us...it has been a wretched 2020 for many, but God is faithful, and He continues to shower us with grace, love, and blessings.

FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson:

MIDDLE SCHOOL Mrs. Scott: 5th Grade Math is moving right along with our math lessons. We completed Lesson 37 today. Our next test will be after Lesson 39. I’m hoping to have our test before Thanksgiving Break.

I would like to say how proud I am of our middle school students. They have really stepped up with virtual learning. I have received the majority of student’s homework. I have messaged your child if they have missing work and given them their deadlines before their missing work becomes 0’s. I can’t wait to have the kids back in person but until then, we will continue to rock virtual learning! I pray that everyone is happy and healthy as we head into Thanksgiving Break.

6R Math has been reviewing Chapter 4 this week. We will take our test THIS Friday.

6A/7R Math has started Chapter 5 and will cover fraction operations in this chapter.

7A Math has started Chapter 5 and will cover rational numbers and equations in this chapter.

8R Math is working on rules of exponents.

8A Math is covering graphing this week. If at all possible, please have graph paper for the graphs. This takes the guesswork out of grading their graphs.

Mrs. Hanson: Ms. Kester: Everybody OK out there? I think we all survived an adventurous virtual week! The Paleolithic people's invention of tools and fire set ablaze the sixth graders, migration and urbanization got the seventh graders moving and grooving, and eighth graders are sailing through lessons on Pilgrims, the Mayflower, and Mayflower Compact. Next stop, Massachusetts! But first, mid-quarter reports. I'm working on it. In the meantime, have a good evening and remember to smile.

Mrs. Harbeson: Hello, Everyone!

I hope you all are well. I believe our virtual learning has been a success, so far! Almost everyone is logging into my class, on time every day. That's awesome! Even though we've moved to virtual, our reading and grammar are just as they've always been. 8th is reading A Christmas Carol; 7th is reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; and 6th is reading Hatchet. We've been completing assignments, reading together, working on projects, and taking tests...all through GoogleClassroom! I thank God for technology that keeps us together and learning even when we can't be in the classroom together. I pray that you are enjoying this beautiful weather and I am looking forward to seeing all of you together in class. Hang in there!

FIRST PLACE – Lauren, 7th Grade: The book fair is always really fun. I always enjoy hanging out with friends there. There is always neat stuff there too. I love it when we get to have donuts with dads or muffins with moms. I especially like it when we have grandparent’s day. Some years I get more stuff than others but everything in the book fair is always interesting. Lots of items are also very cheap and affordable. I love how almost everything is school-related and can benefit me in school.

The book fair really lightens up the school and is a great school event. Adding grandparent’s day and muffins with moms as well as donuts with dads is a very special touch. I love visiting the book fair with friends and buying some great stuff. I tend to like books that have scary or suspenseful parts in them. Luckily, the book fair has lots of these types of books as well as children’s books and informative books. There are plenty of toys or school-related items for me to use in class or simply to play with. I love the variety of items! I’m very excited about this year’s book fair.

SECOND PLACE – Jack, 5th Grade My favorite memories about the book fair. I like going in to see all the great books and getting the smell of all the new books. I love getting new books to challenge myself and I love to read. I love getting to see my grandparents and do this with them. I am thankful for Mrs. Manning for teaching me and I am thankful for her setting up the book fair. I am thankful for scholastic for doing this for me and the school. I am thankful for the books we get to read and thank you for the snacks you will give us. Thank you Mrs. Manning.

4 PLACE – Alexa, 7th Grade I've been going to this school for 7 years and so far my favorite series is The Babysitters Club. It's a comic and i'm really into it. So far I've got all of the books and I'm really excited to get the next one. Now after we watched those videos in class I figured out that there's gonna be a movie coming out on Netflix. I remember one day I was just looking around and Mrs. Manning told me to get a book but I couldn’t find one so she just gave me a book and it was the babysitters club now I'm obsessed with those kinds of books.

When I went to the fair with my mom I talked to her about getting me all of them and she did. I read all of them and have been waiting for a new one to come out. Now there is and I can't wait. I don't know if she's going to buy me that one but i really hope she does. Then when the movie comes out i'm gonna watch and then gonna read all the books over again. I'm not sure if it's a movie or series but if it's a series i'm going to keep up on5it. 

THIRD PLACE - Riley, 7th Grade The great things about the book fair.

Dear Parents and Grandparents, This year our Book Fair Schedule will be slightly different. I have split up our event days by last name to lessen the number of people in close quarters with others. If your event day does not work with your schedule, please still attend another day. We want our school year to be as normal as possible while still taking necessary precautions to keep our students and families safe and healthy. Our students look forward to attending the book fair every year with their families and I am so happy that they will still get the opportunity to attend.
