CANNED FOOD DRIVE

NOVEMBER’S CHAPEL OFFERING will be a canned food drive. Please send canned/boxed foods to school with your children to stock up the church pantry before the holidays.

Each week we will have a different competition; our final competition next Wednesday (Nov. OU, OSU, or OTHER 20) will be to see whether OU, OSU, or “other” fans are the most generous! Please bring foods Next Wednesday! that do not need to be refrigerated/need other ingredients like meat, eggs, milk, etc.

BOOK FAIR – MS. WARE: Hello! Book Fair is coming up NEXT WEEK! I hope everyone is excited for our upcoming events. Donuts with Dads is Tues, Nov 19, and Muffins with Moms is Thurs, Nov 21. Both are 7:30-8:10. We are thrilled to welcome our Grandparents after chapel services and classroom activities on Nov 25 and 26 to visit the book fair with their grandchildren. We will also be open M-W-F morning, Nov 18-22, at 8:00 a.m. and each evening immediately after school gets out. The last day to check out the book fair is during Grandparent’s Day, November 26. Stay warm everyone!

BOOK FAIR ESSAY: During library time, students have been learning about book fairs and writing essay’s about what they love about the book fair. A few of our favorites are attached for you to enjoy.

PRE-SCHOOL, PRE-KINDERGARTEN CLOSED TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26—SIGN UP NOW FOR DAYCARE: If your students’ teacher is Ms. Colvin, Ms. Gillespie, or Ms. Kelly, there will not be class on Tuesday, November 26 as that is grandparents’ day for classes Kindergarten-8th Grade. However, daycare will be open for those pre-school/prekindergarten students who are signed up. If your student is going to be here on Tuesday, November 26, please indicate so on the sign up sheet in daycare. We will have lots of guests that day, and we need daycare attendee’s to sign up to make sure we have enough food for everyone.

THANKSGIVING BREAK - NO SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH: If you need daycare this day, please make sure you sign up on the sheet in the entry way in the childcare building.

VISION SCREENING— TOMORROW —NOVEMBER 14: Good vision is essential to your child’s learning.

CONTEST BETWEEN

Beginning in the 2007-2008 school year, it is required that the parent or guardian of each student enrolled in -1-

kindergarten, at a public school in this state, shall provide certification to school personnel that the student passed a vision screening within the previous twelve (12) months (PK) or during the kindergarten school year. Students enrolled in first or third grade at a public school, in this state, shall provide, within thirty (30) days of the beginning of the school year, certification to school personnel that the student passed a vision screening within the previous twelve (12) months. First Lutheran School has joined with Vizavance to have your child’s vision screened at no cost to you, for all students in the PS3 classes through 8th grade on November 14 here at school.

GRANDPARENTS DAY is for grandparents of students in the PS-3-year old through 8th Grade classes. It is a day set aside each year to honor and celebrate our grandparents! The Grandparents are invited to come watch performances that the students have prepared for them, to visit their classrooms, visit the book fair together, and join their grandkids for lunch (K-8th only). If your students are in the 3- or 4-year old classes, Grandparents Day is Monday, November 25, and you will get information on Grandparents' Day festivities from your teachers.

If your students are in Kindergarten – 8th Grade, Grandparents Day is Tuesday, November 26 (keep reading!).

Please RSVP to the office by Thursday, November 21 by phone (580-762-9950), email (lutheransecretary@yahoo.com), FastDirect, or in person how many grandparents will be joining your K-8th grade student for lunch, so that we will have enough food. You may pre-pay for their lunch, or they may pay at the door. Grandparents lunches will be $5 per meal.

Grandparents will not be given a lunch ticket, but we will have their name on a list in the cafeteria. The schedule for Grandparents Day for K-8 follows. (3- & 4-year old’s will receive their schedules from their teachers.)

All children need to be signed out in the school office at the end of the day. Please let Grandparent(s) know that if THEY are taking their grandchild home, they need to stop by the office and sign them out.

DO YOU READ TO YOUR KIDS? DO YOU LIKE TO READ YOURSELF? DO YOU HAVE AN HOUR OR MORE TO SPARE? Then we need you at the book fair! We need people to help kids/adults find books, check them out, stock books, etc the week of November 18, and on November 25th and 26th. ADVENT SUPPERS: This year FLCS will host our first intergenerational Advent Suppers on 12/4 and 12/11 from 5-6.

What is an intergenerational supper? Intergenerational suppers provide the opportunity to fellowship with congregants of different generations, seating you and your family at a table with those whom you may not have had the opportunity to get to know otherwise! There will be Bible verses/devotion topics placed at each table to encourage conversation and sharing of traditions. This is a great chance for our youth to meet our elders, and our School families and young families to mingle with our experienced families. Then, join us for advent service in the Sanctuary at 6:30.

SNOW DAY NOTIFICATION: In the event that school may be cancelled due to inclement weather, we follow Ponca City Public Schools schedule FOR WEATHER-RELATED CANCELLATIONS ONLY. Listen to your radio during the cancellation announcements, and if Ponca City Schools are cancelled, First Lutheran will be out, also; however, there will NOT be a separate announcement for First Lutheran. This applies ONLY to weather-related cancellations; at all other times, follow the First Lutheran School Calendar. BOXTOPS CONTEST!: It’s on! Let’s see which class can bring in the most BoxTops! You have until November 21 to bring in your BoxTops to your child’s homeroom teacher, and then we’ll figure out who brought in the most. Which class will win?!

BTW, BoxTops is working on going digital! Just download the app and scan your receipt within 14 days of purchase and we get points! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: How is it already the middle of November? But we are staying busy in PreK. They have been practicing for Grandparents Day, and looking forward to a special day on the 25th! This week we are learning the letter M and hearing the difference between N and M. As well as working on the month and days of the week. Vision screening on Nov. 14th.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Great job on bringing food for the church pantry! Next week is the last week, and the competition is your favorite team. OU, OSU, or Other. Please remember that we go across the street for lunch, and have outside recess most days. Please remember to send a coat, with your child's name in it. Our Grandparents Day is on Monday, November 25th; we will be dismissed at 11:00 for the day. We will not have school on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. If you need child care on Tuesday (26) and Wednesday (27) you need to sign up with Ms. Heidi, or you may not have a spot for your child. Our Bible words this week are, Love the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 6:5. We are learning the letters Cc,Nn,Oo, and the number 5. Have a Blessed Week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Please let your child's grandparents know that we will have a special day for them on November 26th starting at 9:00 am in the school gym. Please RSVP to the school office for your grandparents’ lunches. You may pay for your grandparent's lunch ticket in the office, or they may pay at the door. Grandparents’ lunches will be $5.00 per meal. Grandparents will not be given a lunch ticket, but we will have their name on a list in the cafeteria that day. If your child doesn't have a grandparent then they may adopt one (an older church friend, or an older neighbor, etc.) School will be dismissed early that day, and grandparents need to sign their grandchildren out in the school office before they leave with their grandchild. FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is Joshua 1:9 - Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Be sure to invite your child's grandparents to school on Tuesday, Nov. 26 for our special Grandparent's Day. We also have the book fair coming soon! Flyers and other information for the book fair were sent home this week. We will continue to collect canned food for our chapel offerings. Blessings on your week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy Veterans Day! I'm thankful to live in this country and thankful for those men and women who are and were brave enough to fight for our freedoms. God has truly blessed us. Remember that our turkey in disguise is due Friday the 15th. Let me know if you have questions or have misplaced your information.

We're busy preparing for Grandparent's Day and we're excited about spending time with our grandparents. Vision screening is this Thursday. We had another fun afternoon with Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Dave. Ask your child about our time together. We're doing review words for spelling this week. Check your child's planner for their words to study.

THIRD GADE – Mrs. Steichen: Brrr.. what a cold start to our week! Please remember to write names in coats and send coats with your child. If it is above 32 we will be outside for a bit. We need some fresh air and to stretch our legs.

This week: Memory - Second Commandment and its meaning was due today. By next Wednesday (11/20) the Third Commandment and its meaning is due. Reading: We are done with Unit 2 - this means chapter book. Ask your child what we are reading! Remember this means no paragraph or reading test each week. Spelling: Unit 2 review words should be in your child's planner; test on Friday. Eye Test: Remember tomorrow is our eye screening. Grandparent's Day: We are all working hard to memorize our parts. If you have a Grinch costume please let me know. I would like to use it for our play. Veterans Day: Thank you at all our family members who have served!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Don’t forget your coat, to take your vitamins, and continue to stay healthy as God is showing His power in the weather. Keep reading for AR and Book-IT. For BOOK IT mark the days read for 20 minutes at home. November’s calendars are due in December. Friday is the SE states & capitals test for the region. The kids know great tools to practice this and all regions. Midterms come out next Wednesday. Help the kids by staying on top of grades and assignments on Fast Direct. Grandparent’s day is right around the corner. Blessings as we prepare our hearts for the Lord!

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: BRRRR!! It's cold! What a blessing to experience a range of temperatures. It makes me appreciate those perfect fall days. See my FD Bulletin Board for upcoming tests and memory work. Blessings!

FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson: We have added a digital component to 5th grade science. Our book comes with a beautiful digital interactive piece that will help students visualize and interact with the content. This work will mainly be done at school until I feel everyone is comfortable with it.

So this week we will be working with the interactive lesson and performing a digital lab.

Friday we will have a vocabulary quiz.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FLY: We meet every Wednesday from 5:30-7:00 for dinner, devotions, and games. This is open to all 6th-12th grade students. Watch for an adjustment to the times as we approach Advent season.

Mrs. Scott: General 6th Grade Math is working with fractions. Advanced 6th/General 7th Grade Math is working with multiplying negative integers and will have their next chapter test next week. Advanced 7th Grade Math is working on inverse equations. Algebra is working with slope and related functions. Advanced Algebra is working with inequalities. Late work has been an issue across the board lately so please help us encourage your child to complete homework and turn it in on time!

6th Grade Religion: Today's memory work was the 5 Poetic Books of the Old Testament and the 5 Major Prophet books of the Old Testament. Next week’s memory work is the Minor Prophets of the Old Testament.

Mrs. Hanson: 6th grade is prepping for a test by the end of the week. With basketball games going on, please make sure we are still taking time to study. The 20 min in the car on the way to Blackwell would be perfect to run vocabulary or study in another way.

7th grade is wrapping up rocks so we can take a field trip to the salt mines on Nov. 22. As soon as our spot is confirmed I will send out a permission slip for this field trip, we will need parent drivers. We will quiz this Friday over the 3 rock types and their specific characteristics.

8th grade will have some hands on examinations of fungi this week. Last week we got to look at our microscopic bacteria and protist friends. We will quiz on Friday.

Mr. Covert: We're well into the second quarter, and it definitely starting to feel a lot more like winter! I hope everybody is keeping warm and doing their best to avoid getting any bugs that will start going around.

Classes are rolling right along. 8th grade is taking a look at America prior to the Civil War, and at the ways of life and tensions that eventually boiled over into the deadliest conflict in America's history. In 7th grade, we're jumping across the pond to take look at Western Europe. As for 6th grade, we're going to be studying Greece in the time period just prior to and following it's conquering by Alexander the Great.

8th grade parents, I'm still waiting to hear from the travel agent regarding pricing and such, and I'll make sure to send out a FastDirect as soon as I hear something back!

Mrs. Harbeson: Brrr! It seems like we've jumped right into winter! I hope you all are doing well. I want to thank all of you for prayers and messages concerning my dad. He was hospitalized at St. Francis in Tulsa since last Tuesday evening. Fortunately, he was able to come home yesterday. I truly appreciate each and every word of concern and encouragement. I also want to thank Ms. SilverSky Nimsey for covering my classes while I was with my family. She told me that the students on both days were wonderful! Good job!

In language, all classes have finished their first novels and have taken the AR tests on them. We will be starting new books this week. Lesson 5 spelling and vocabulary tests for everyone will be Thursday. Study hard as doing well on these tests will improve your overall grade in literature. In grammar, everyone is working on sentence structure and locating subjects and verbs. We're on to diagramming next! (Yeah!) 7th grade...be sure to keep up with your bloom ball sheets on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. This is a big part of your literature grade!

We have outside recess every day, and some days are VERY cold. Please send a jacket with your student to school EVERY DAY! Also, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them! (If you cannot afford a jacket for your student, please contact the office, and we will get you in touch with an organization that can help.)

I’m looking forward to seeing what is new in the library and my grandparents being there. I love reading and I always find something really good.

Although in third grade I had a limit and still have one. But I can never remember.

So I pick out books I like and then it’s hard to pick the best ones.  Izzy – 5th

I love the Survivor books because they are interesting. I am looking forward to books set in World War Two and books about World Wars. I would be happy if there was more chapter books please I really want more.

One of my favorite things are book fairs. I love the smell of new books. I love to read too.

The book fair has always been a big event at our school. In elementary school, everyone was excited about all the books, posters, and other neat little things that you could get there. We also loved that our grandparents were coming over for grandparents day. We would go to the gym for the performances by all the grades and then went over for the book fair. I’ve always tried to look for good books there and there have always been some that I really, really enjoyed. Some that I would recommend are Refugee, Projekt 1065, and Gifted.
