NOVEMBER’S CHAPEL OFFERING will be a canned food drive. Please send canned/boxed foods to school with your children to stock up the church pantry before the holidays. Each week we will have a different competition; November 6 will be a competition between boys donations and girls donations, to see who can bring the most food. November 13 will be a competition to see which building will bring the most food, and November 20 will be to see whether OU, OSU, or “other” fans are the most generous! Please remember to bring foods that do not need to be refrigerated and don’t need refrigerated/other ingredients like meat, eggs, milk, etc. added.

CARDINALS GIVE BACK: Jiffy Trip is happy to announce that you all did a great job with your contributions to Children’s Hospital. The Lutheran students donated a total of $404.05 in JUST ONE WEEK! The Elementary School wins the pizza dinner for donating the most on average ($2.61 per child!). Their pizza party will take place on November 15.

Thank you Jiffy Trip for sponsoring this fun “give back” event for us!

SNOW DAY NOTIFICATION: In the event that school may be cancelled due to inclement weather, we follow Ponca City Public Schools schedule FOR WEATHER-RELATED CANCELLATIONS ONLY. Listen to your radio during the cancellation announcements, and if Ponca City Schools are cancelled, First Lutheran will be out, also; however, there will NOT be a separate announcement for First Lutheran. This applies ONLY to weather-related cancellations; at all other times, follow the First Lutheran School Calendar. VETERANS PARADE: All of our school families are invited to walk with the FLS cheerleaders in the Veterans parade this Saturday, Nov 2nd. Please wear a First Lutheran shirt/hoodie and meet us at the North corner of Palm and Grand no later than 10:30.

NIGHT OF PRAYER: Join us this Sunday, Nov 3rd, for our first prayer group meeting! We will be offering prayers of thanksgiving and more for our school, church, and community. Meet in the Youth House at 7 pm.

VISION SCREENING—NOVEMBER 14: Good vision is essential to your child’s learning. Beginning in the 2007-2008 school year, it is required that the parent or guardian of each student enrolled in kindergarten, at a public school in this -1-

state, shall provide certification to school personnel that the student passed a vision screening within the previous twelve (12) months (PK) or during the kindergarten school year. Students enrolled in first or third grade at a public school, in this state, shall provide, within thirty (30) days of the beginning of the school year, certification to school personnel that the student passed a vision screening within the previous twelve (12) months.

First Lutheran School has joined with Vizavance to have your child’s vision screened at no cost to you, for all students in the PS3 classes through 8th grade on November 14 here at school. If you wish to have your child’s vision screened elsewhere, and opt out of our vision screening, please completed the attached form and return it to the office

by November 11, 2019. Additionally, please bring a copy of your child’s screening results to the school office.

TAILGATE PARTY!! Our final tailgate party of the season is for all ages and will be Friday, Nov 8th. Join us for food, fun, and fellowship as we welcome members of the community out to join us! This is senior night at the game, so come out and support our Wildcats!

KINDLES FOR SALE: The middle school has upgraded to ChromeBooks, so the Kindle Fire 7’s that were formerly used in the middle school are now for sale. They have 5 GB, come with cases, but no charging cords. 1 for $30, 2 for $50, 3 for $60. Stop by the office to take a look and/or purchase them. We currently have 6 left, so don’t wait if you are interested.

PATRIOT’S PEN is a national patriotic speech writing competition open to 6th – 8th grade students. Students choosing to participate will write and enter a 300-400 word essay on this years’ theme “What Makes America Great”; and the grand prize is a $5,000 Scholarship. VOICE OF DEMOCRACY is a national patriotic speech writing competition open to 9th – 12th grade students. Students choosing to participate will write, enter, and record a 3-5 minute speech expressing their interpretation of the theme “What Makes America Great”. The grand prize is a $30,000 scholarship! PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: We had an amazing turnout Saturday night at Trunk or Treat; thank you to everyone who helped with this huge project. This Sunday morning, Daylight Savings time ends. Set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night and use that extra hour to wake up refreshed and attend church!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: What a great turn out for the Fall Festival/ Trunk or treat! Thank you to all the parents that volunteered. I hope everyone had a great time! This week we are learning all about the letter N and the sound it makes. Scholastic flyers go out today and due November 8th. Our party will be Thursday at 2:30. You may wear your costume that day. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: We have had a busy week! We are enjoying Red Ribbon week, thank you to all those that participated. We had two birthdays this week as well. Happy Birthday Tucker(29th) and Kennedy!!(30th) Costume party tomorrow; please remember no scary costumes or weapons allowed. Thank you families for sending items to help with our party!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Brr! Where did Fall go? We walk across the street for lunch every day, and play outside for recess most days. Please remember to send a jacket or coat with your child every day. A hoodie isn't enough on really cold days when walking to the cafeteria. Make sure to write your child's name in every piece of outwear they bring to school. It is hard to return lost clothing to their owners without a name in it. Thanks Student Council for the fun Red Ribbon Week we are having! Tomorrow is wear black, it is also our costume party day. Children may wear their costumes to school if they want to. Friday is wear White day. Show and Tell is Friday. Book orders are in folders and are due to me or online by Friday, November 8th. Our Grandparents' Day is Monday, November 25th. Look for the information note in folders today. Please fill out and return to me by Wednesday so that we can have a good count for food and seats. Our Bible words this week are, Nothing will be impossible with God. Luke 1:37 We are learning the letters Pp, Tt, Ii and the number 3. Have a Blessed Week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Our class would like to say Happy Birthday to Hayes (26th)! Show and tell is this Friday. The Pizza Hut Book it started in October. This first month everyone in kindergarten is getting a free pizza, because I did all the reading of the 20 books to them. Next month in November parents you will have to read to your children 20 books in November and the rest of the school year. These can be bed time stories or a fun book in the 2

afternoon that you read to your children (library books are great). Please fill out the book-it paper with the title of the books (Not our reading books/Monday folder books). Each month you need 20 books to get a free pizza! Please look for our new field trip paper in your child's backpack today. Thank you parents for all your help at Trunk or Treat and our party this Thursday the 31st at 2:30 (everyone is welcome). Kids wear your costume but nothing scary. Have a great week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Thank you parents for taking the time to meet with me for parent/teacher conferences. A special thank you to Carsha Medina for organizing our class game for the Trunk or Treat. Thank you also to those of you who helped her with the games and brought goodies for the cake walk. It was a fun evening! Memory verse for Friday is Psalm 23:2 - He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters. Field trip forms went home today for our trip to Cowley College on Dec. 5. These are being sent out early so that we can get our reserved seating for the play. Please turn the form and your money ($1 per person) in by Friday, November 8. October reading logs for Book It are due on Friday for the Pizza Hut certificate. Please have your child bring earbuds or earphones to use during our computer time. Our Pumpkin Party is on Thursday at 2:30. Costumes may be worn on that day also!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy Reformation Day! Trunk or Treat was great fun. Thanks to everyone who made the evening such a success! We’re enjoying the Red Ribbon Week dress up days. THIRD GADE – Mrs. Steichen: Brr.... Please make sure your child comes with a coat. We do play outside if it is above freezing, and we also have to travel to PE and Music. This week: We finally have a normal week!! Memory: First Commandment and meaning is due next Wednesday. Once your child says a commandment to me they may move on to the next. We will work our way through all ten. Reading: Spelling and Reading Test on Friday. Next week we will do Amazing Birds Next, then it is a review week. On the review week, we will start a new chapter book. Math: This week we are working on the Halloween math packet, next week we will go back to regular math homework and lessons. Science: Everyone did a great job on the animal projects. We are now moving on to plants. Social Studies: we are on our last continent. Next week we will move on to Communities Unit. Book Report: Look for an information packet about our book report that is due after Thanksgiving. Grandparent's Day: we have started working on our play. Please let me know ASAP if your child will not be here, so that I can move parts around. Thank you!!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Happy All Saints Day Friday! On Thursday kids may wear a school appropriate costume. What a great time we all had Saturday at Trunk of Treat, it was Amazing! Keep reading for AR. Make sure that you are getting emails or texts to alert you that your student has taken their test. Some of us are already reading & testing big point books to make 2nd quarter easier; WAY TO GO! Chapel offering is going towards Compassion International, & our church food bank. Watch for food drive competitions. Please check my Fast Direct for the school policy for late work; some students get close to unwanted consequences! I appreciate the amazing conferences we had!

I really see the amazing support God has given our children through families. We have started the second quarter off on a good foot; let’s continue to keep the good pace & steady footing for the rest of the year! Have a great week talking to God! FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Trunk or Treat was just AMAZING!! What a great outreach to our community from FLCS. Mrs. Heitman did a fabulous job organizing everything, and so many of you pitched in to make our booth and the event a success. You are the best! Blessings as we welcome in November, a month set aside to focus on giving thanks to God for all He has done and continues to do for us.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FLY: We meet every Wednesday from 5:30-7:00 for dinner, devotions, and games. This is open to all 6th-12th grade students. Watch for an adjustment to the times as we approach Advent season.

Mrs. Scott: General 6th Grade Math is comparing fractions. Advanced 6th Grade/General 7th Grade Math is wrapping up Chapter 5 and will possibly have a math test on Friday. Depending on how the review goes will determine if the math test is pushed to next week. Advanced 7th Grade Math took their Chapter 4 Test today and will begin Chapter 5 later this week. Algebra is reviewing algebra concepts before starting the graphing chapters. Advanced Algebra is well in to Chapter 5 working with Linear Equations.

6th Grade Religion: Memory work due today was The Lord’s Prayer, The Conclusion and its meaning. Next week’s memory work we will begin memorizing the books of the Old Testament.

Mrs. Hanson: A 5 day school week??? What's that? Something we haven't had in quite awhile. But it's been nice to actually get some really good work done, understand content better, and just spend time together!

So, ya, it's gotten colder... I know some middle schoolers are too cool to wear coats, but please encourage your child to bring a coat with them to school so they can use it during recess if they need it.

6th grade is cruising through the metric system! We will have a quiz Friday. As you go through your daily life, try to use the metric system with your student instead of the standard system. ie. when in the car, mention your speed in km/hr instead of mph, predict the outside temperature in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit, etc.

7th grade is rolling with the rock cycle and will quiz Friday, too. Ask your student about the different rock types and how they are formed.

8th grade is looking into the microscopic world of microbes and will also quiz Friday. Ask your student about how they plan on organizing the information they gather during this unit.

Mr. Covert: We’re at the end of October! I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy as we get into that time of the year when sickness starts to spread. Do your part and wash your hands regularly!

Classes are moving right along. In 8th grade, we’re skipping a bit ahead to talk about the westward expansion of our nation, literally “from sea to shining sea.” 7th grade is moving a little further south for our chapter on Brazil. As for 6th grade, we’re digging into ancient Greece and seeing how this civilization laid the foundation for our country.

I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we move through this new quarter and new month.

Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings! I hope your week has been treating you well so far! We certainly have a lot going on in middle school this week...

We are in the middle of celebrating Red Ribbon Week! "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit." 1 Corinthians 6:19 Have you noticed our new sign on the fence? Honor God and the body that he gave you by taking care of yourself!

Staying away from drugs, vaping, smoking, and anything that harms your body dishonors God! Winners of the coloring contest (preK through 5th) will be announced over the intercom on Friday morning. Congratulations to our daily winners!

In language, 6th graders are continuing reading Maniac Magee, working on lesson 4 in Wordly Wise, and studying unit 1 in grammar. 7th graders are reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and have begun working on Bloom Ball projects. They, too, are working on lesson 4 in Wordly Wise and studying the punctuation unit in grammar.

The 8th grade class is reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck, working on lesson 4 in WW, and have just completed the final section of the punctuation unit in grammar. For all classes, reading quizzes and lesson 4 spelling and vocabulary tests are this Friday, November 1.

Christmas Market Oklahoma is quickly approaching, and as the time nears we will again be asking for your assistance and guidance in making this the most grand of Christmas festivals! We have outside recess every day, and some days are getting pretty cool. Please remember to send a jacket with your student to school EVERY DAY! Also, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them!
