October 25 we have a half-day of school, but daycare will be open. PLEASE let daycare or the office know if your student will be going to daycare that afternoon, so that we will have enough lunches for everyone!
Fall Festival/TRUNK OR TREAT: Saturday, October 26th First Lutheran Church & School will host our Trunk or Treat Festival from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Pizza will be sold by the slice for $2.00 each slice in advance, or $3/slice at the event (tea/lemonade included). Stop by the office or return the attached order form with payment to your homeroom teacher by October 22 to purchase your pizza at “advance” prices. Chips with cheese and walking taco’s will also be for sale at the event. We need people to host a trunk, run games, and give out candy. CARDINALS GIVE BACK: Jiffy Trip is partnering with First Lutheran to collect change for the Children’s Hospital Foundation/Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for one week; October 16th – October 23rd. They are asking First Lutheran students to donate change (or bills if you prefer), and all proceeds will benefit the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The winning class will be the class in each building who donates the most (on average) per student, and that class will win a pizza party, courtesy of Jiffy Trip! WE NEED YOUR USED INK/TONER CARTRIDGES: We collect and recycle ink & toner cartridges for credit on our Staples bill! Please donate your ink/toner cartridges by bringing them to the office, leaving them with your teachers to send to the office, or leave them in the black mailbox between the office and the parking lot. We also collect and recycle (broken or working) cell phones, other small electronic devices like iPods and Kindles (sorry--no desktops), laptops, and charging cords. Using these credits on our ink purchases each month helps us to keep our costs down, which helps you (the people whose tuition pays our bills)! Thank you! BOX TOPS!: Box Tops is all new! The NEW and improved Box Tops mobile app scans your store receipt, finds participating products, and instantly adds Box Tops to First Lutheran's earnings online! Just download the app and scan your receipt within 14 days of purchase and we get points! You can also bring your grocery receipts to the office and Connie can scan them for you (within 14 days of the purchase. We will continue to gather your clipped box tops until December. Thank you for helping us earn points and cash! KINDLES FOR SALE: The middle school has upgraded to ChromeBooks, so the Kindle Fire 7’s that were formerly used in the middle school are now for sale. They have 5 GB, come with cases, but no charging cords. 1 for $30, 2 for $50, 3 for $60. Stop by the office to take a look and/or purchase them. We currently have 6 left, so don’t wait if you are interested. PATRIOT’S PEN is a national patriotic speech writing competition open to 6th – 8th grade students. Students choosing to participate will write and enter a 300-400 word essay on this years’ theme “What Makes America Great”; and the grand prize is a $5,000 Scholarship. VOICE OF DEMOCRACY is a national patriotic speech writing competition open to 9th – 12th grade students. Students choosing to participate will write, enter, and record a 3-5 minute speech expressing their -1-
interpretation of the theme “What Makes America Great”. The grand prize is a $30,000 scholarship! Only 41 days this quarter and it is broken up with Grandparents Day & Thanksgiving. Please stay on top of your student's grades. Time flies when you're having fun!!! PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: I hope everyone had a nice Fall break! This week we are learning all about the Letter C and the sound it makes. The class is working hard learning to write their names. Have a great week! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: Hope everyone had a fantastic Fall Break!! We will be learning the letter B,b this week and the number 8. Happy Belated Birthday Logan! Her Bday was last week before Fall Break. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Parent/Teacher conferences this week. PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed the long break, and time with your family! I sure did! Thanks to everyone for taking the time to come to conferences this week. I have enjoyed visiting with you! We will finish up conferences on Friday, and are dismissed from school at 11:20. Saturday is our Fall Festival/Trunk or Treat; I hope to see you all there! KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: I hope everyone had a great Fall Break! This Saturday Oct 26th will be Trunk or Treat at our school from 5:00 to 7:00. Our class Fall/Costume party will be on Oct. 31st at 2:30 and your child may wear their costume to school that day, but nothing scary. I hope to see everyone at parent/teacher conferences this week. FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: We are at the beginning of a new quarter. This means new chances and opportunities to SHINE for JESUS! We have new AR goals. I see many kids REALLY determined to make this goal! Nightly reading is necessary for AR success. A new quarter also means a fresh start with grades. Please continue to help your children look at their assignments for their supported success, and check to make sure they are not having late work. Continue to be blessed and praise the Lord as we are his workmanship. FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: I hope everyone had a most enjoyable fall break. Now we're back in the middle of a busy week. Be sure to see the front of the Cardinal Chatter for information on FLCS's first Trunk or Treat to be held this Saturday. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun! I hope to see many school families there. Kristi Hunter has asked me to remind you that we will need workers for the Trunk or Treat, every half hour, from 4:30 (setup) to 7:30 (take down). MIDDLE SCHOOL PCPS Junior High Golf Tryouts for Boys and Girls, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be Monday, October 28th. If you want to try out, or just want more information, be at Lew Wentz Golf Course at 3:45 to register; tryouts will happen from 4:00 – 5:30 (ish). BYO Clubs or make prior arrangements to borrow/rent some. F.L.Y.: Join us this Wednesday for FLY! We’ll meet in the youth house for pizza and devotions, then head to the gym to play basketball. This is open to all 6th-12th grade students. Mrs. Scott: Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed Fall Break! General 6th Grade Math has started Chapter 4 and is working on Prime Factorization. Advanced 6th Grade/General 7th Grade Math has started Chapter 5 and is working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Advanced 7th Grade Math is working on negative exponents. Algebra 8 has been reviewing for their Chapter 3 test that they took today. Advanced 8th Grade Algebra has started Chapter 5. 6th Grade Religion: Memory work due today was The Lord’s Prayer, The Seventh Petition and its meaning. Memory work due on 10/30/19 will be The Lord’s Prayer, The Conclusion and its meaning. Mrs. Hanson: If we have seen you at conferences, thank you for coming. Our classes are going to pick up where we left off. 8th grade is going to continue our discussion of the Jefferson Administration. In 7th grade, we’re still talking about our neighbors to the south. As for 6th grade, we’ll be starting our unit on the ancient Greeks this week. I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we get started with our new quarter! Blessings on your week! I'm so thankful for those parents who took time to meet with us teachers for student, parent, teacher conferences. Your student's success is of the utmost importance. I view success not only academically, but also socially and spiritually. All classes have begun their assigned novels for the second nine weeks and have also received their bookmarks with the quizzes listed on them. Please be ready for quizzes on the assigned days. We are also beginning our next grammar units and spelling/vocabulary lessons. I encourage you all to stay on top of your reading and classwork as this quarter is our busiest quarter of the year with the basketball, cheer, and the holidays all packed in. As you begin to sort through your Christmas things, if you discover there are items you would like to donate to Christmas Market Oklahoma, please bring them to the school office and guild members will pick them up there. Christmas Market Oklahoma is quickly approaching, and as the time nears we will again be asking for your assistance and guidance in making this the most grand of Christmas festivals! We have outside recess every day, and some days are getting pretty cool. Please remember to send a jacket with your student to school EVERY DAY! Also, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them! (If you cannot afford a jacket for your student, please contact the office, and we will get you in touch with an organization that can help.)
