OCTOBER 18 & 21 IS FALL BREAK, AND SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED FRIDAY AND MONDAY; daycare will be open for those who signed up. If you need care and didn’t sign up yet, please check with Ms. Heidi ASAP! October 25 we have a half-day of school, but daycare will be open. PLEASE let daycare or the office know if your student will be going to daycare that afternoon, so that we will have enough lunches for everyone!
Fall Festival/TRUNK OR TREAT: Saturday, October 26th First Lutheran Church & School will host our Trunk or Treat Festival from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Pizza will be sold by the slice for $2.00 each slice in advance, or $3/slice at the event (tea/lemonade included). Stop by the office or return the attached order form with payment to your homeroom teacher by October 22 to purchase your pizza at “advance” prices. Chips with cheese and walking taco’s will also be for sale at the event. We need people to host a trunk, run games, and give out candy. CHEER COMPETITION THIS WEEKEND: Your FLS cheerleaders will be competing at the MCDA cheer and dance competition at Frontier City THIS Saturday, October 19th! Come out and show them your support, and then go have fun on some roller coasters! Spectator tickets (which include park entry) can be purchased for $23 + tax at frontiercity.com using promo code CHEER. CARDINALS GIVE BACK: Jiffy Trip is partnering with First Lutheran to collect change for the Children’s Hospital Foundation/Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for one week; October 16th – October 23rd. They are asking First Lutheran students to donate change (or bills if you prefer), and all proceeds will benefit the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The winning class will be the class in each building who donates the most (on average) per student, and that class will win a pizza party, courtesy of Jiffy Trip! WE NEED YOUR USED INK/TONER CARTRIDGES: We collect and recycle ink & toner cartridges for credit on our Staples bill! Please donate your ink/toner cartridges by bringing them to the office, leaving them with your teachers to send to the office, or leave them in the black mailbox between the office and the parking lot. We also collect and recycle (broken or working) cell phones, other small electronic devices like iPods and Kindles (sorry--no desktops), laptops, and charging cords. Using these credits on our ink purchases each month helps us to keep our costs down, which helps you (the people whose tuition pays our bills)! Thank you! -1-

KINDLES FOR SALE: The middle school has upgraded to ChromeBooks, so the Kindle Fire 7’s that were formerly used in the middle school are now for sale. They have 5 GB, come with cases, but no charging cords. 1 for $30, 2 for $50, 3 for $60. Stop by the office to take a look and/or purchase them. We currently have 6 left, so don’t wait if you are interested. CHAPEL OFFERINGS: We have collected $484.51 in Chapel Offerings to be used to sponsor Romaric and Bernadette this school year! Please remember to bring your chapel offerings on Wednesday’s so that we can continue to help these children! PATRIOT’S PEN is a national patriotic speech writing competition open to 6th – 8th grade students. Participating students will write and enter a 300-400 word essay on this years’ theme “What Makes America Great”; and the grand prize is a $5,000 Scholarship. VOICE OF DEMOCRACY is a national patriotic speech writing competition open to 9th – 12th grade students. Participating students will write, enter, and record a 3-5 minute speech expressing their interpretation of the theme “What Makes America Great”. The grand prize is a $30,000 scholarship! PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: This is the end of the first quarter and the second quarter will go quickly with Report Cards, Fall Festival, Basketball, Grandparents Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas quickly approaching. May the Lord continue to bless us all with peace and patience. PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: I hope everyone had a nice break! This week we are learning the letter E and the sound it makes. I will be sending home Parent/Teacher Conference information this week, so be sure to check backpacks. Have a great week! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: A terrific cool week in Pre-K 4! We have another short week with Fall Break this weekend. Memory verse for Thursday is Philippians 4:4 - Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! We will also have our spelling test on Thursday. Book orders were sent home last week and these are due tomorrow. Parent/Teacher Conference notes are also being sent home today for your scheduled appointment time. Please sign and return these tomorrow and let me know if your time does not work for you. We are wrapping up a short week for another long weekend. Chapel offering is going towards Victor from Compassion International. We are hoping to help a second child after we fully support Victor. We have a bonus one week challenge from Jiffy Tripp to assist a children’s hospital in OKC. The winning class from each building receives a pizza party! AR goals reset after fall break. We only have a few left to make qtr 1 goals, you can do it. Reading and memory tests are tomorrow. I can’t wait to speak to each of you at Parent Teacher Conferences the week of the 21st & we have a half day of school on the 25th. MIDDLE SCHOOL F.L.Y.: Join us this Wednesday for FLY! We’ll meet in the youth house for pizza and devotions, then head to the gym to play basketball. This is open to all 6th-12th grade students. Mrs. Scott: General 6th grade math took their Chapter 3 test yesterday. Advanced 6th grade/General 7th grade has their Chapter 4 test on Thursday. Advanced 7th grade math is working through Chapter 4. 8th grade Algebra is working on solving equations with variables on both sides. Advanced Algebra had a test over Chapter 4 today. Enjoy another long weekend! 6th Grade Religion: Memory work due today was The Lord’s Prayer, The Sixth Petition and its meaning. Memory work due on 10/23/19 will be The Lord’s Prayer, The Seventh Petition and its meaning. Mrs. Hanson: Next week we will have conferences where student, parent, and teacher can meet and discuss how the school year has been going, the student can show his/her accomplishments and goals can be made for the rest of the school year. Each family will meet with each teacher. The student will get to lead the conference! A letter has gone home explaining everything and has your specific conference date and time. Please return these signed by tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 17. In classes, we will be preparing for the conferences as well as moving forward with science content. 6th grade is moving into the metric system of measurement, 7th grade is digging into rocks ;), and 8th grade is exploring each group of living organisms and has started a bug project. Binders will be graded this week in all classes. Mr. Covert: We’re back from St. Louis, and we have another short week because of fall break! I hope that everyone is ready to finish the quarter strong! 3
We’re going to get through what we can before the quarter ends. 8th grade will be starting on the Thomas Jefferson’s administration. In 7th grade, we’re wrapping up Canada and turning to the south to study our neighbors there. As for 6th grade, we’re going to get started on one of our longer units, about ancient Greece. 7th and 8th grade have started another fundraiser in conjunction with the company Thirty-One, selling bags. The fundraising forms are due back on Tuesday, October 22, which is the day we return from fall break. I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we round out the first quarter. Blessings on your week! Mrs. Harbeson: Hello, Everyone! I hope you all are doing well! My weekend was fabulous as our family celebrated the marriage of my oldest son Jacob to his bride Cheyenne. That's right! There's another Mrs. Harbeson wondering around Ponca City! I truly appreciate your well wishes and blessings that you've sent my way. As you know, this week is the final week of our 1st quarter. What must be done before Fall Break in language? First of all, if you have not taken the AR test on the book that you chose to read at the beginning of the quarter, you only have until Thursday to get that done. I've talked to the students over the past eight weeks about not waiting until the last minute to take that test. You never know if you might be gone early for vacation or (God forbid) sick. Unfortunately, all tests must be taken by 3:30 on Thursday, October 17, or a "0" will be recorded in the gradebook as a test grade...no matter what the reason. Another item to complete before we break is checking binders. We will be checking binders on Thursday. If you will not be here, you must find a way to get your folder to school for me to grade. If I don't have your folder, then a "0" will be entered in the gradebook for a test grade. The final thing you must have completed is all missing tests. That's all I have for now.
