MINI CHEER IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!: - Due to reasons beyond our control, the game originally scheduled for this Thursday has been cancelled. We will move our mini-cheer pep rally and performance to next Tuesday, Jan 21st. We will have our pep rally on Tuesday, Jan 21st, at 2:45, and perform again during halftime of the JV boys game at 6:00. All families are encouraged to stay for our Varsity games as well!

2-PAYMENT TUITION REMINDER: If you opted to pay your tuition for the year in two payments, the second half payment is due on or before January 31. If you need to switch to a monthly plan for the second semester, please contact the office and let us know.

Y.A.L.L.: The “Young-ish adults living life” group meets every Thursday evening from 7-8 in the youth house. We are currently doing a video series of an “outsider visits the Lutheran church”.

SCHOOL OFFICE—TAX STATEMENTS: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2017 for tax purposes, you can print them off by logging into your FastDirect account, click on the “finances” button on the top, click on “tax report” on the left-hand side, then choose the year you want and click on “Tax Year Printout”. It will bring up a page to print with your payments to First Lutheran categorized and totaled, and it will have our Federal Tax I.D. number on the top.

Alternatively, you can request a tax statement from the office by calling 580-762-9950 or sending a FastDirect email to Connie Erickson. This will include school-related expenses only; summer daycare tax statements must be requested -1-

from daycare by sending a FastDirect email to Heidi Daley or calling daycare at 580-762-1124. Not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot.

SNOW DAY NOTIFICATION: In the event that school may be cancelled due to inclement weather, we follow Ponca City Public Schools schedule FOR WEATHER-RELATED CANCELLATIONS ONLY. Listen to your radio during the cancellation announcements, and if Ponca City Schools are cancelled, First Lutheran will be out, also; however, there will NOT be a separate announcement for First Lutheran. This applies ONLY to weather-related cancellations; at all other times, follow the First Lutheran School Calendar. If you need a new calendar, go to www.fastdir.com/flcspc, click on the “links” tab on the left, and then click on “2017-2018 Calendar”, or stop by the school office for a new one.

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: I pray that you all are having a Healthy and Happy New Year. Thank you for being a blessing to me and our school and I pray for our continued service to each other.

ATHLETICS – Coach Amanda: What a great day to be a Cardinal! Three student athletes took 1st place in the city-wide hoop shoot contest! Kinley Brown, Reese Andrews, and Nathan Stewart. Lauren King, Reed Jackson, and Mason McCleary all got second place in their divisions. 12 trophies were awarded at the co-test and 12 First Lutheran student athletes received 6 of them! So proud of these awesome athletes!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: This week we are learning all about the letter O and the sounds it makes. We also continue working hard learning how to write and spell our names. My students are doing a great job! Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Gillespie: Hello families! Hope everyone is feeling well and back into the swing of things. We have had a busy week in PreK. This week is two letters, the Letter D and G. We are also working on writing our names and fine motor skills.

Please keep practicing these at home. No School on Monday the 20th due to Parent Teacher conferences; please let me know if you would like to meet.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Thank you to all who have returned their report cards. Your copy to keep is in folders today. If you haven't returned yours, please return it as soon as possible. The students are making great progress! Parent/Teacher conferences are on Monday. Look for the note in folders today. Book orders are due on Friday. Our Bible words this week are God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 We are learning the letter Rr,Ee,Bb and the number 11. Have a blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: I think I forgot to say happy birthday to our December classmates. Happy birthday to Thatcher 12-11, Henley 12-16, and Isabella 12-31. I still need a few more signed report cards returned to me; please do this soon if you have not already. I will give you another copy of the card to keep. I keep the signed one and give you another copy, thanks again. We do not have school on Monday, Jan. 20th because I have a few conferences and a teachers meeting. Have a magnificent week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Thank you for all of the parents who were able to join us and help at our January Christmas Party! Please return a signed copy of the report card if you have not done so yet. Have a wonderful week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Wasn't the snow beautiful? Our God is so GREAT! We're working hard on getting back in the routine. We're making fine progress on writing our names in cursive. Thanks for your help at home. I'm proud of these fine second graders because everyone was able to say memory work when they arrived at school on Thursday morning. Help us keep it up! Please sign and return your child's report card if you haven't already. Blessings!

THIRD GRADE – Coach Amanda (for Mrs. Steichen): 3rd Grade is trucking right along! We will have a math test this week along with our spelling and vocabulary tests. I am enjoying the chance to teach this class! We are having a lot of fun and learning while we do it!

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: We had a good first day of long division with remainders! Praise God! Continue to help the kids with the details, process, showing work, and questions kids have to ask themselves with long division.

Following directions is a good practice to have. They can do it! Keep practicing math facts and concepts. This helps to ensure that we have speed and accuracy for more difficult math problems, like the long division we are now doing. We are now really ramping up since we are working on being fifth graders and preparing for the future. Keep reading for AR & Book It. Book orders are due by the 16th. I am hearing great ideas for the Valentine’s Day Box Contest, WOW! Keep it up! The States & Cap test SW is on Friday, only four states. The kids know great tools to practice this and all regions.

Remember to bring in your chapel money for American Heart Association with the Kid’s Heart Challenge. God’s Blessings on your week!

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Quarter three is in full swing. New material is being introduced in most subjects.

Your child may have more homework this quarter. Math seems to be especially challenging for some. It would be helpful if a parent checked math assignments nightly, especially if your child struggles in this subject. The reinforcement at home will help your child soar. I know some of you do this on a regular basis. You're doing great, as I'm sure you can tell by your child's grades. Contact me if you have questions or concerns. Blessings!

FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE – Mrs. Hanson: As we continue to learn about the engineering process, we will become engineers ourselves, taking on a few different STEM challenges. To allow us to have class time to complete these challenges, work and content learning need to take place outside the classroom. This is nothing new or additional than normal education practices. Student just need to make sure as they are doing their homework that they are doing it to actually learn and understand and not just going through the motions. If readings are assigned, please make sure your student is fully understanding so they can come to class with a working knowledge that is able to be applied and used during our hands on activities.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FUTURE WASHINGTON D.C. ATTENDEES: If you need to make payments to your D.C. account, please note that you cannot make payments with a credit card. We will, however, accept checks, cash, money orders, etc. Thank you.

FLY: Join us tonight for FLY night! We'll meet at 5:30 in the youth house for dinner and devotions, then head to the gym for fun and games! All 6th-12th graders are encouraged to join us!

FLY BASH: This Sunday, Jan 19th, join First Lutheran Youth (FLY) as we kick off the New Year with a FLY Bash! Meet at the youth house, 5:30-7. You'll get to know some of our new Youth leaders, have food, fun, and fellowship! Hope to see you there!

Mrs. Scott: We have had an abundance of late work. Please help us keep your student on track by encouraging them to complete their assignments on time!

General 6th Grade Math is working with congruent figures. Advanced 6th/General 7th Grade Math is working with slope. Advanced 7th Grade Math just completed their Chapter 6 Test and will begin Chapter 7 today. 8th Grade Algebra is working on solving inequalities. Advanced Algebra is working on solving linear systems by combinations.

Chapter 7 Test will be later this week.

6th Grade Religion: Memory work due today was The First Commandment and its meaning. Memory work due on 1/22 will be The Second Commandment and its meaning.

Mrs. Hanson: I am in need of 2 liter bottles; if you happen to empty one this week, I would be grateful if you sent it my way, but please do not intentionally go get and empty one just for this. I only need about 6 or so. Thanks in advance!

6th grade will be doing some hands on activities to better understand states of matter and changes of state. We will have a vocab quiz Friday.

7th grade is also doing several hands on activities to literally dig into soils. If you or someone you know are a soil expert and would be willing to talk to our class, please let me know.

8th grade will be finishing invertebrates this week by completing Flipbooks by Friday and taking a quiz.

Mr. Covert: We’re in the middle of our first full week back! I hope everyone is getting settled back into the routine as we settle in for the third quarter!

Classes are moving right along as usual. 8th grade is wrapping up the Civil War and moving onward into the westward expansion of our nation. In 7th grade, we’ll be finishing up our look at East Asia this week. As for 6th grade, we’re finishing up the fall of Rome, and getting set to look at the spread of Christianity through Europe in the years following Rome’s decline.

Mrs. Harbeson: Hello! I hope your week is treating you well! Things are getting back to normal here in middle school as we are in to our first full week of school since Christmas Break. All classes have begun lesson 8 in Wordly Wise.

The 6th and 7th graders are working on writing persuasive 5-paragraph themes, and the 8th grade is finishing our grammar unit that had to be put on hold the last week of school in December. Lesson 8 spelling and vocabulary tests will be next Tuesday for everyone and the first quiz on the 3rd quarter novels for 6th and 7th grade will also be on Tuesday.

8th graders will take their grammar unit test tomorrow. As always, reading logs are due every Friday. That's all I have for now. Check my webpage for more detailed information. Blessings!

We have outside recess every day, and some days are VERY cold. Please send a jacket with your student to school EVERY DAY! Also, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them! (If you cannot afford a jacket for your student, please contact the office, and we will get you in touch with an organization that can help.)
