Tuesday - January 11 we have three classes with perfect attendance. We have four students out because they were exposed by family members, and three students out with a stomach bug. We praise God for a four day weekend to keep even more separated. (No school Friday & Monday.)

2-PAYMENT TUITION REMINDER: If you opted to pay your tuition for the year in two payments, the second half payment is due MONDAY, January 31; after that date, the applied discount will be removed from your account. Please contact the office if you want to change plans.

HELP! The church has been approached by a large family that is recently homeless and in need. They need clothing items for themselves and their 5 children. If you can help, please bring your new / clean & recently laundered items to the church or school office.  14 year old girl: pants 11/12, tops 11/12 M/L, shoes 9, bra 34B  13 year old boy: pants 32/36 (very tall and slim), tops M/L, shoes 13.5  10 year old boy: pants 14/16, tops 14/16 XL, shoes 6.5  8 year old boy: pants 10/12, tops 10/12, shoes 2  6 year old boy: pants 7/8, tops 7/8, shoes 13.5 TAX STATEMENT: If you need a tax statement from FLS for your taxes, you can print it yourself by logging into FastDirect, click on “Finance” on the top, and then click on “tax report” over on the left. Choose the tax year that you need (probably 2021), and then click on “tax year printout”. You can print your payments during that year, and it has our tax i.d. # on the top (It is 73-6083110). OR…you can call/stop by/email me, and I will print one for you.

Mr. Birnbaum: No School Friday & Monday. We were hoping to have a Lutheran Basketball Tournament all weekend but too many Covid concerns. We are still praying that the 16 new Active Smart Boards will arrive and be installed in all classrooms so the teachers can learn the new programs this Monday but we will see what God has planned for us. MUSIC  – Mrs. Brey: Elementary students will continue to work on rhythms and steady beat. Middle school students will continue to be working on note names in the treble clef. Middle school students have church performances (9am at First Lutheran) coming up:  6th Grade: February 13  7th Grade: April 10  8th Grade: May 8 (1)

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Daine: Thank you to all of our subs who are covering for Ms. Daine during her illness!

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: This week we are learning all about the letters B,F and N. Parents please make sure your child's name is on their coat. A flyer about the 100th day of school and how we are going to celebrate for it is in their backpack this week. Have a great week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Welcome to our class Hattie and Rylan! We are happy to have you join us!

Happy Birthday Eden! Report cards were due today, if you haven't signed and returned yours, please do tomorrow.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Monday; if you would like to meet please let me know. No school Friday or Monday. Our Bible words this week are, God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 We are learning the letters Rr,Ee,Bb and the number 11. Have a Blessed Week!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: We are going to have a can food drive for our 100th day of school on February 1st. Also, please look for the field trip form for Cowley College Robert Brown Theatre (Arkansas City, KS) in your backpack today. We will need an exact seat count so after we have turned in the number no one can change their minds and come when they did not buy a ticket. The kindergarten class and first grade class are going and we will need drivers for this trip. Thank you parents for helping out with this. We don't have school on Friday the 14 th or Monday the 17th.

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Thursday is John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Field trip information and permission forms came home today for our trip to Cowley College. Please return form with money next Tuesday, Jan. 18. Enjoy your 4-day weekend! Blessings on your week!

SECOND GRADE – Ms. Felton: Hello and Happy Winter! The students had a grand time ice skating and are already super motivated to reach their goals for this quarter. In religion, we are reading about Jesus’ childhood and time before he began preaching. We also looked up the meaning of our first and middle names, which was a fun activity yesterday! Please share with your child why you picked out that name for them - names carry a lot of meaning!! Our social studies test should be next Friday, over citizens and government. Our science test won’t be for a while - we are doing an experiment this week to see why pennies turn green and then we will begin our unit on habitats. There won’t be an assessment until the end of that habitats unit in a couple of weeks. In math we are adding double-digit numbers and continue to have assessments about every two weeks. I am hoping to get a service project off the ground that will tie into social studies and math, so keep your ears open for that! For reading, we are discovering fables and folktales.

Each student will pick a fable or folktale from a list next week to read, learn about, and share with the class.

THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Thank you so much for all the parents who went with us on our ice skating adventure. It was so much fun! This week: Spelling, Memory, Reading, Language, Science Test all on Friday. Memory: 9 th Commandment and meaning. Reading: Symphony of Whales story. Language: Linking verbs. Science: States of Matter.

Test review went home on Tuesday. Reading: We have one more reading story before the end of a unit, so we will be doing review words coming up and also reading a chapter book. Water: we are running low on bottled water; if you are willing, we would love for you to send a case to help us out. Have a wonderful week! Remember NO SCHOOL Friday or Monday.

FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: WOW! It is really cold outside! Make sure we are dressed properly for winter weather to have illnesses stay away. Continue to send in chapel offering for Victor and Rosario. Let’s share with those that need our help. Kids are working hard on academics as we are focusing on the future being fabulous Fourth Graders (especially with short weeks). Let me know if you want to sit down for a Parent Teacher Conference to make sure we have the right footings for the rest of the year. Mid terms are not too far away at the beginning of the month. We will be having the practice test for the MW region states & capitals test this week; with the test date TBA. The kids know great tools to practice this and all regions. 5th Grade & Middle School 5th GRADE RELIGION – Mrs. Brey: Students are working on memorizing the Apostle's Creed. This will be due on January 21st. We are also studying prayer: what it is and how to do it. We are emphasizing the fact that prayer is a conversation with God. STUDENT COUNCIL – Mrs. Harbeson: Put this on your calendar! Middle School Winter Dance, Friday, February 25, 7-9:00 p.m.

6th – 8th MATH – Mr. McKinley: 6th and 7th we are still working in chapter 6 on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing of positive and negative numbers.

7th and 8th we are working in chapter 6 and this week we are working with similar shapes and calculating lines of the shape with cross multiplication.

SCIENCE – Mrs. Porter-Cain: Hello Cardinals! Hope this week has found you safe and healthy!

5th Science - They are learning some basic Science words and their origins 6th Science - They are working their way through atoms, molecules, and the periodic table! We are planning some experiments soon!

7th Science - They are learning about the layers of the earth and earthquakes! They have visual resources on their Google Classrooms!

8th Science - They are covering Genetics - this week has been about Punnett Squares and alleles!

PE - this week they are playing dodge ball!

BASKETBALL - JV girls and boys are playing in the Billings tournament and both JV and Varsity head to Dewey on Thursday! GO CARDS! LANGUAGE – Ms. Kester: In English, seventh- and eighth-grade students took grammar quizzes yesterday and literature quizzes today. Sixth graders also tackled their literature quizzes. Now, all students in fifth through eighth grades are working on reading logs that are due by Friday. Since we do not have school that day, they are welcome to submit them earlier this week but not later than Friday. Remember, all reading logs are submitted online now. Next week, grammar homework will be posted on Google Classroom like everything else mentioned here.

In religion classes, students will recite Genesis 1:27-28 Thursday then take their creation test Wednesday of next week. In the meantime, they will study which things were created on which days while also reviewing their memory verse for the fill-in-the-answer portion of the test. Lastly, IXL assignments will resume on our first full week of school, the week of January 24. As always, let me know if you have any questions.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Mr. Brey: 5th Grade: We will be exploring how America changed from the early 1800s to the mid 1800s. We will be doing a lot of hands on learning these next few weeks.

6th Grade: Students will be going over state standards that we went over at the beginning of the year. Mostly review that they should already have learned.

7th Grade: We are going over WWI. Students are learning about diplomacy and the events that built up to WWI. 8th Grade: We are finishing up our Westward Expansion unit! Students will be learning about the build up to the civil war after we finish the unit.

We have outside recess every day, and some days are very cold.

Please remember to send a coat with your student to school EVERY day! Also, please, please, please make sure their name is in the jacket. They will have a much more enjoyable recess period if they are warm, and so will the staff who is supervising them on the playground!
