Athletes, officials, spectators throng arena

A multitude of DepEd and LGU officials, athletic delegations, officiating officials, visitors, and spectators witnessed the grand parade and opening of the DepEd Dos Regional Invitation Sporting Event (RISE) at the Benjamin G. Dy Memorial Sports Complex, afternoon of April 25.

Gracing the Cagayan Valley sports show, in his taped speech, DepEd Undersecretary Atty. Revsee A. Escobedo expressed his congratulatory message and support to DepEd Region 2. Also, DepEd Regional Director Benjamin D. Paragas conveyed his message highlighting Region 2 culture in terms of winning and losing in sports competitions.

“Our children, our athletes participated in this event because of the expectation that they will learn the different values that we are teaching them in the classroom: honesty, play with integrity, teamwork, friendship, and discipline,’ underscored Dr. Paragas.

Cauayan City hails team Vizcaya

“We care because you came.”

Such was how Dr. Ruby B. Maur, CID-Chief Education Supervisor of the Schools Division of Cauayan City clinched her message to the Nueva Vizcaya delegation during the Welcome Program held at Cauayan City National High School (CCNHS) gymnasium, 4 p.m. of April 24.

In her speech, Dr. Maur elaborated CARE through the acrostic, CARE: C, for creating opportunity to learn from each other; A, for applying gained learning from the short stay in Cauayan City; R, for response; and E, for encourage everyone to be in sports but practicing health protocols. She also addressed the coaches the 4Cs to live by: Competence, Character, Confidence, and Connectedness.

Meanwhile, Cauayan City Councilor Hon. Faustino M. Gapasin Jr. conveyed his message of support, encouragement, and assistance to the delegation. Apart from the entertainment numbers, School Principal III Dr. Primitivo R. Gorospe and Barangay Councilor Hon. Renato Aguilar expressed their welcome messages on behalf of CCNHS and the Barangay Council of Turayong, respectively.

In response to the welcoming gestures of the host city, after his message of gratitude and in closing, SDO-Nueva Vizcaya SGOD Chief Dr. Romulo S. Ancheta invited the crowd for a community dance.

and Pledge of Officiating Officials and Coaches, which was followed by the raising and hoisting of the DepEd Dos RISE and Delegation Banners spearheaded by Director Paragas and Assistant Director Amin, and the respective heads of each of the 9 delegations.

At the outset, after Assistant Regional Director Jessie L. Amin vented his opening remarks affirming the excellent hosting of Cauayan City.

Cauayan City Mayor Bernard Faustino M. Dy, Congressman Faustino A. Dy V, and Vice Governor Faustino G. Dy III, duly represented by Ex-officio Board Member/Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman Dax Paolo Binag, respectively expressed their welcome messages. Added to the thrill of the opening program were the doxology and singing of the DepEd Dos RISE Theme Song, and Galaw Pilipinas Mass Demonstration performed by the Sparkling KAWAYAN VOICES and DANCERS, respectively.

The lighting of the cauldron signaled Dir. Paragas to officially declare the opening of the 2022 DepEd Dos RISE, followed by a grand fireworks display.

Firing on All Cylinders Bring it on!

Banking on pent-up emotions and energy due to the shelving of the annual sports extravaganza for a couple of years, Novo Vizcayano athletes will once again, mightily strut their wares on their counterparts in Region 2.

There is absolutely no doubt about the tenacity of all athletes to win the much-desired top rank in each sporting event. The rigorous drills they had undergone prepared them well for the four-day regional competition.

This is a baptism of fire for everything that they have learned, sweated, practiced and trained for in the last few months will be staged in the real battle ground. The desire and will to win have been constantly and deeply ingrained in their minds as they gave every ounce of effort during the training for the fulfillment of the ultimate goal – the glittering gold.

They are motivated as well by the all-out support provided by the NV PLGU, SDO-Nueva Vizcaya, their respective MLGUs and schools, coaches, and other stakeholders.

As the athletes face their rivals head-on, everything rests upon their shoulders. In the heat of the competition, they will have to rely only on themselves, no more inputs

from the coaches as they hold on to the hope that they have trained their wards long and hard enough to make the right decisions at the right time.

There are no more second chances, no more do-overs; to succeed, they have to give their all.

As they undergo the test of their mettle, the athletes have to dig deep, think hard, and act resolutely. They need not pay too much attention to the cheering or jeering crowd. They should concentrate and focus. They have to will themselves to go further and harder.

As the spotlight is once again on the athletes, it is imperative that they show-off what they have become after the long and arduous times they have spent pushing the boundaries of their perceived limitations.

As they are once again in the limelight, the athletes have to display their utmost best in every possible situation- be it in winning or in losing.

This is the 2022 DepEd Dos R.I.S.E. and as such, the Novo Vizcayano athletes must definitely RISE to the occasion.

Rise in Faith KEVIN MARF B. SAQUING In spite of the uncertainties that affected the landscape of sports this pandemic, Cagayan Valley athletes made it through this phenomenal year as they join in the 2022 Regional Invitational Sporting Events (RISE).

As one, the nine schools divisions of DepEd-Region 02 start to break the chains that hold back the team to bounce back in the new normal. Two years into this setting, the athletes have been surviving and thriving in a way that leads to the success of this regional sports event.

Though there are apprehensions that arise, this unforgettable breakthrough in the time of global health crisis is anchored on the big faith of all the people participating in this

The four-day athletic joust is formally dubbed as DepEd Dos R.I.S.E. or Regional Invitational Sporting Events. Rivals from the four corners of Region 2 have descended in Cauayan City, Isabela to once again test their mettle against one another.

Though the conduct of the competition is parallel to the CaVRAA Meet, there are marked differences. One obvious distinction is the strict adherence to the safety protocols that are mandated by the IATF. Every member of the different delegations had to undergo Rapid Antigen Test to be able to participate.

...from PAGE 2 To pursue this activity in a time of declining risk status, this requires closeknit collaboration with the stakeholders.

This faith is reciprocated as the management team hopes that all athletes, trainers and coaches adhere to the given standards.

More than the present context, faith dwells with the trust that every game will be conscientiously played and adjudged.

Faith is also articulated as every athlete trusts his trainer and coach for a competitive and fair play. One must believe that his mentor designs the most appropriate plan and provides him the necessary assistance to succeed. Likewise, the mentor returns this trust to the athlete. Each coach/trainer must trust that the athlete is performing according to their designed goals.

Further, faith is shown as the athlete learns to believe in his teammates. Players need to trust one another for them to function as a powerful team and to amplify team’s achievement.

Each athlete must also have the right dose of faith in himself. One must have confidence in his abilities to execute strategically the game aspects essential for victory.

More than all, faith is manifested when the participant believes in the Master Trainer/Coach that the different events in this regional sports meet be in its finest tune.

This year’s RISE is a showcase of a rise in faith that binds everyone towards the feat of this sports endeavor.

This year marks the return of the annual regional sports extravaganza. After two years of having been shelved due to the onslaught of the dreaded Covid pandemic, the premier sporting event of the Cagayan Valley Region stages a roaring comeback.

Rising for Quality Sports: Transcending Challenges Through Partnerships

as a united Cagayan Valley. Though the efforts to win remain the driving force of the competition, fostering and rekindling friendships, after having been sidelined for two years, is a hallmark of this year’s games.

Friendly and definitely competitive athletes are once again at the forefront and in the limelight.

The different Schools Divisions are fielding their best athletes anew to showcase their prowess in the different sporting events. It is, however, noteworthy that some games have been deliberately left-out for one reason or another. But this has not dampened the competitive spirit that is innately present in all athletes. The same fire of determination still consumes the individual athlete to aim for the biggest prize of all – the gold medal and to ultimately contribute to the collective

aim of every delegation, the overall championship.

Competitors from the different divisions are raring to pit and measure their talents and skills against their rivals. Two years of being laid-off stokes the determination of each athlete to win emphatically. This is the battle cry of each athlete: to win and stomp their class.

This years’ sportsfest may be unique in so many ways but the same fiery passion still runs on every member of every delegation – from the athletes to the coaches, from the trainers to the chaperones, and from the parents to the top management.

Truly, the passion is still fiery; the determination is still unyielding; the competition is still fierce; and the will is still strong.

Blessing in Defeat JOSEPH GASTON DONALD A. LANANG

Defeatists remain negative because they never see opportunities of growth in their time of loss.

An athlete’s goal in every competition is to win, that is why extensive preparations are laid beforehand. Aside from perfecting the desired sports, test on agility and endurance vis-à-vis team-building (if necessary) are the main concerns for the substantial practices.

But no hint of handling defeat is specified in the course of preparations.

As the DepEd Dos Regional Invitational Sports Events (RISE) unfolds in Cauayan City, two extreme feelings are evidently observed – happy for those athletes who are victorious in the game including their coaches and teammates conveying immeasurable expressions of joy; lonely for those who did not make it in the competition and in their faces and actions disclose different angles of sadness. Some even sobbed bitterly manifesting disbelief and unacceptance of their defeat.

In most of those asked about their feelings on their defeat, various reactions were obtained and some are ought to be followedup by guidance counselors in schools whose athletes were not able to “bring home the bacon.”

These are striking comments that connote cynicism and self-destruction:

I am not really cut for this one, had it not been my father who pushed me to this; It’s time for me to concentrate more on my studies.

This was definitely a waste of time, effort and money; I had done all my best but to no avail, I am really worthless and hopeless;

I have no face to show to my family and friends including my teachers; and, My training is not sufficient and I lacked basic support.

These statements are impactful: I am more challenged to do better in the next competition is a very positive reaction when losing a race. He is exhibiting the true attitude of an athlete to still bring out the very best in him.

I am ashamed of my performance but somehow I am awakened that at some point, I was so confident and arrogant is indeed a blessing in disguise. His negative experience taught him humility, a very rare value of an athlete but it surely brings him to a greater height.

I appreciate how my competitor played during our match is a mindset that leads to becoming an affirming person. An affirming athlete builds a team of totally affirmed individuals and the cycle of affirming relationships goes on and on until it becomes a network of affirming people.

I am so thankful to my coach, trainer, and all those who supported me all the way even though I did not make it leads to a realization that he needs to be thankful to every blessing and circumstance that come to pass in his life.

Simple reactions from the athletes but reading in between lines discloses some blessings amidst failures and/or moments of defeats. Defeatists remain negative because they never see opportunities of growth in their time of loss. But when they overcome being one, surely their mindset is renewed and gradually could count their blessings in the guise of loss or defeat.

Benjamin G. Dy Memorial Sports Complex:

Grandeur of Legacy

Aesthetic. Challenging. Welcoming.

Situated at the Ideal City of the North, the 300-hectare openfield land in Barangay Tagaran, the Benjamin G. Dy Memorial Sports Complex also known as Cauayan City Sports Complex is the largest infrastracture in the country as they claimed, showcasing the United Nations’ 17 developmental goals.

In 2016, the sports complex was named Cauayan City Complex, then later dubbed Benjamin G. Dy Memorial Sports Complex in honor of the late Governor of Isabela, Benjamin G. Dy, tagged as one of the greatest leaders of the province of Isabela.

Construction and Facilities

This Olympic -sized sports complex was constructed under the leadership of Mayor Bernard Faustino M. Dy with an estimated total cost of P400 million, P300 million for the sports complex, and P100 million for the road infractures and lighting facilities.

Its architectural design provides new scenery for both the locals and visitors highlighting the 17 United Nations Sustainable Goals. The complex also holds a grandstand, track and field oval, Olympic-sized swimming pool, lawn tennis court, badminton and basketball court, and can accomodate an estimate of 6,000 individuals.

Blocks away from the main entrance of the complex, your

eyes will be captured and mesmerized by the uniqueness and creativity of the complex as a whole. From its colorful and informative bleachers to the aesthetic murals, truly the complex has much to offer.

A MASTERPIECE

Made by the Isabela Artist Circle, a group of artists from Isabela, the colorful, life-sized murals showcase United Nation’s Sustainable Developmental Goals namely: no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice and strong institutions, and partnership for the goals.

After the United Nations released these sustainable goals in 2016, Cauayan City took the initiative and localized these goals and turned them into “Labing Pitong Hamon sa Bawat Cauayeño (17 Challenges for every Citizen of Cauayan),” where all the plans and programs of the local government are aligned with these goals, with a belief that small steps when taken as a whole, would greatly effect in the realization on reaching our global vision, mission, and goals.

Hitting the bulls-eye A journey towards victory amidst heartaches

It is a rare chance to meet in person an athlete whose ultimate aspiration is to hit the bullseye. His sport of choice? It’s Archery.

When asked about what sparked his desire to be part of the sports team, he quipped, “Dahil pangarap kong makaabot kahit man lang sa CaVRAA Meet, inisip kong sumali sa isang event na mas kakaunti ang sumasali na kung saan mas malaki ‘yong chance na manalo sa provincial meet and eventually makaabot sa regional meet.”

This dream was not put in vain because his prayers were answered when he was able to qualify for the 2018 Provincial Meet.

Those who know him are in awe because despite being a newbie in the archery event, he was able to tally six gold medals, and remarked: “Hindi ko inexpect na mananalo ako o makakuha ng gold medal, much more anim na medals in my event considering na baguhan lang ako sa archery. Dahil dito, unti-unti kong naaabot ang pangarap ko na makarating sa regional meet.”

His medal haul in the provincial meet served as his ticket to join the NV Archery Team in the 2018 CaVRAA Meet held in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. However, his first foray in the joust ended in heartache as he was not able make it to the finals due to an equipment failure (he had problems with his bow.) Although it pained him that his dream slipped in his hands, Aradanas said that it was just alright, considering that this was his first time in the regional meet.

This baptism of fire further deepened his passion for his chosen sport. During the 2019 Provincial Athletic Meet, he raked in 7 gold medals paving the way for a second stint for the CaVRAA Meet in 2020. However, while practices were underway in preparation for the said meet, the COVID-19 pandemic broke and changed everything. The annual meet was shelved for health reasons. Many plans were either put on hold or downright cancelled. He said: “Masyadong masakit ‘yon para sa akin, kasi feeling ko, mas prepared na ako kaysa last year. Tsaka hindi ko na-meet ‘yong expectations ng coach ko, school head, at family members and friends.” He further said that this gave him the frustration of not being able to prove anything despite

Defying beauty pageant norms

Beauty. Glamour. Elegance.

These are the characteristics normally associated with beauty queens. The beauty pageant fanatics tend to get attracted to seemingly flawless candidates; but being a crown holder is more than that. It’s more on the responsibility to perform one’s duty.

Experts say that a beauty queen is more than her physical appearance. She’s also someone who uses her platform for good.

With no mistake, Miss RISE-Nueva Vizcaya 2022 has all of these in abundance. Nick I. Rojas, Senior High School teacher of Nueva Vizcaya General Comprehensive High School (NVGCHS) and NV’s beauty queen handlers, had his eye on Francess Gwen F. Barrozo as a perfect beauty queen material.

This 18-year-old lady is a Grade 12 Science and Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student of NVGCHS. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Erwin Barrozo of Buenavista, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.

She is smart as a whip, with flying colors in academics and a passion for music. These qualities have helped make Gwen Barrozo stand out among other ladies. Beyond these good points, her strong belief about pageantry stands-out.

Beauty pageants, for her, is not only for flawless curves and edges, and brain but for all who are brave enough to embrace the real beauty of one’s imperfections and aspire to inspire others of what matters most beyond- defying the beauty pageant norms. It’s a total package of someone who will be able to use her/his reign and platform to give the best message to the people.

“I believe that women can still look beautiful even with their flaws. It’s a matter of how well they carry themselves and convey their message to others.”, Gwen exclaimed in an interview.

The bottom line is, there’s nothing better than natural beauty. Besides, who can really define what “beauty” is after all?

It all boils down to the infamous saying,

“beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

the rigorous preparations he has had; so, he decided to quit practicing. Within the duration of the pandemic, he stopped playing and engrossed himself with biking, instead. He also distanced himself from his friends. But, when the news came in March 2022 about DepEd Dos RISE, he was convinced by his coach, Mr. Arjan Leo Edrozo, to finally give himself another chance in the sports he has neglected for over two years. His decision was prompted by his desire to be healed of the pain he has felt. He further added, “Gusto ko ulit sumali para malagpasan ko ang expectations ng ibang tao sa akin.”

Now that he is finally joining this modified CaVRAA Meet, he said, “Gusto kong ibigay ang aking best kasi nais kong makarating sa mas mataas na level; gusto kong maging part ng National Team sa archery.” His trainer who firmly believes that he has the potential of becoming part of the national team gives him an unshakeable support and a firm hope that anyone can rise beyond pain and frustrations in sports as in life.

This incredibly talented young man is a native of Salinas, Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya.

A true blue Bambangueño, the pride of his town. His name is MARK ANGELOU D. ARADANAS, a gem of Salinas High School.

My interview with ‘Gelo’ resonates with me because just like him, I, too experienced painful and frustrating events in my life. However, despite all the odds, my life remains colorful amid all the ups and downs. With his story, I am more convinced that the pains and frustrations that came along my way made me stronger and better person. Such experiences helped me to be more focused to hit the “mark” that I am aiming for. With the story of Archer ‘Gelo,’ I am more resolved that good thing happens even at the height of pain and frustration; that even pain has something to teach us if we only listen and believe.

Spark … Sparkled … Sparkling Forever

“Diamonds are Forever,”

is a slogan originally penned by copywriter Mary Frances Gerety for an advertising agency, De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd. in 1947.

75 years after, here in Cauayan City, Isabela, this oft-quoted line – Diamonds are Forever – will have another implication especially to those in attendance in this post pandemic sporting event labeled as DepEd Dos Regional Invitational Sports Event (RISE).

Why such connotation?

Diamonds are considered to be the hardest and the most precious among all gemstones. But what is more striking and uncommon is the origin of diamond’s meaning. It traces its roots from Ancient Greece where they refer to as “adamas” or invincible. Their warriors wear it in battle as a symbol of immeasurable strength and for being unconquerable. It is also known to symbolize strength and beauty. Hence, they are considered as the stone for champions because of its sturdiness and it rates as 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.

Diamonds also have various colors aside from clear or white.

Red is extremely rare and it symbolizes courage; Orange one of the rarest and it symbolizes enthusiasm; Yellow one of the most common and usually used for engagement rings. It symbolizes happiness and friendship.; Pink is quite rare and very beautiful. It symbolizes romance; Blue is quite rare and it symbolizes royalty and power but when given as gift, it represents respect to the recipient; Brown symbolizes humility and it represents balance and strength; and, Black symbolizes eternal and unchanging love.

Always associated with action, energy and passion).

DepEd Dos RISE as the first regional massive convergence in the new normal will surely be remembered forever. The games played together with the winners and the special events held will always be fondly recalled. The Director’s Night last April 26, 2022 at the Don Faustino L. Dy Coliseum is surely a highlight in this regional sports meet.

A regional luminary, Dr. Benjamin D. Paragas, CESO III sparkled like a diamond that very night. His mere presence undoubtedly refreshed the slumping spirit of every individual who had worked tirelessly on the second day of the competitions. In his message, he boosted the morale of everyone. He was very thankful to the City of Cauayan for the excellent hosting. He also expressed gratitude to all the Division leaders and their contingents for amidst the threats still of the dreaded virus they managed to form active delegations to this regional sporting event.

The City Mayor of Cauayan Hon. Bernard Faustino M. Dy together with some of the city councilors added glow and luster to the event. They wowed the audience when they bared their excellent support to the education sector and to the rest of the city. Other sources of shimmering joy were the performances of the city’s Sparkling Kawayan Voices (choir), Dazzling Kawayan Dancers and Shining Kawayan Singers with all the notable decorations including the sumptuous food and overflowing drinks.

Truly, in the Director’s Night during the DepEd Dos RISE, the different hues of diamonds gleamed like the blended colors of each of the nine (9) Divisions of Region 02 tu¬rned black. Once again, Cagayan Valley proved to be solid 1-DepED-of-2.

Nueva Vizcaya male volleyball team showed nerves of steel as they walloped Isabela players in a golden victory in the 2022 Regional Invitational Sporting Events (RISE) held at Isabela College of Arts and Trade, Cauayan City, April 27.

The team recorded a straight 3-0 set win in the championship round. The Novo Vizcayano players left their opponent behind finishing the first two sets via a 2516 win record. They capped the game in the third set nailing the Isabela players with 25-

18 score.

They coasted to the championship round by defeating City of Ilagan players with a 2512, 25-17 win.

Further, the team set a zero-loss record in a bid for a slot in the championship round from April 25-27. They dominated Tuguegarao City players in their first game in a 25-21, 25-21 win; Cagayan players in their second game in a 26-28, 25-14, 25-19 win; and Quirino in their third game in a 25-16, 25-22 win.

Archers hit 3 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze medals

by MICKAEL A. RAYMUNDO Mark Angelou Aradanas bagged 7 individual medals in the recently held DepEd Dos RISE. Aradanas won gold in 60 m and in the Olympics round; silver in 50 m and FITA; and bronze in 30m.

Meanwhile, Jula Dictag, a firsttimer in the regional meet, chipped in 3 individual medals. She hauled gold in 50m, silver in Olympics round, and bronze in FITA.

Both Dictag and Aradanas brought home silver in the mixed event; while John Czandrix B. Martin, Renzel Jan H. Dumale and Aradanas garnered bronze in the Team Event.

The Nueva Vizcaya Archers also won over-all first Runner-Up honors for Boys and Girls.

Arjan Leo Edrozo and Hervilyn Balut are the coaches for NV Archery Team.

NV jins overall champ again

Bagtona; Gerica Laize U. Daniel; Shannah Roxanne L. Domingo and Aubrey C. Julian with their coaches Herbert S. Villacorta and Jamaica Joyce F. Natividad, and Lay Kingston R. Galima, their trainer.

The non-combative competition was held at Cauayan City National High School, April 27.

After delivering her words of gratitude on behalf of the Nueva Vizcaya delegation, assisted by the other division officials present, Dr. Llana spearheaded the awarding of certificates of appreciation and tokens to the host schools and local government partners.

A friendship dance and simple fellowship snack followed.

Meanwhile, Nueva Vizcaya's Pencak Silat team swept off 3 gold medals in Regu, Boys Category.

Pesilat Jomac Taruc, Ralph Phillipe Moris and Azter Velasco kicked off other 8 contenders with their synchronizedand sharp jurus(forms).

Lady paddler clinches gold in 3 sets

by ALGER M. CEROJALES After dropping the first two sets, Novo Vizcayano Kuennie Kate Rovenair Aban rallied to win the last three to dispose Johannah Villaluz of Santiago in the championship game of table tennis.

Using a flurry of top spins and blazing serves, Aban edged out her opponent via 9-11, -11,11-5, 12-10, 11-4 score.

Aban, a grade 10 student of Solano High School, gained the finals berth after dumping Isabela in the first game, defeating Quirino in the second and Santiago in the third.

However, Santiago forced a rematch with NV and after winning a slot in their bracket. This time, the Santiago paddler won which paved the way for their third and final meet-up.

Aban is under the tutelage of Xyril Kharl Cayaban .
