Ted Danson returns to prime-time NBC in ‘The Good Place’

A

s the weather turns cooler and communities across the nation celebrate homecoming, the television season gets underway with hopeful freshman comedies, seasoned senior dramas and plenty of alumni.

This fall marks a very special homecoming for NBC as it welcomes Ted Danson (“Cheers”) back into the fold as one of the stars of “The Good Place,” premiering Monday, Sept. 19, and then moving to its regular slot Thursday, Sept. 22, on the peacock network. Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”) headlines the series as Eleanor Shellstrop, a woman who discovers she’s dead when Michael (Danson) welcomes her to The Good Place.

That would be fine and dandy with Eleanor, but she soon figures out there’s been a huge mistake.

Michael, the architect of the idyllic afterlife community, informs her she’s been granted access to The Good Place instead of The Bad Place because she helped save innocent people from Death Row. A royal jerk by her own admission, Eleanor knows she’s done no such thing, but hides in plain sight from Michael because she has no intention of going to The Bad Place.

Bell talked about why she finds the role challenging when she and Danson appeared on a panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to promote the show.

“It’s a very fine line that I have to ride to stay likable when I am the unlikable protagonist,” explained the actress.

She gave props to director Drew Goddard (“The Martian,” 2015), who also serves as executive producer of the new comedy alongside creator and writer Michael Schur (“Parks

Manny Jacinto as seen and Recreation”), Morgan Sackett (“Veep”) and David Miner (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”). A compelling exploration of what it means to be a good person, “The Good Place” shows a lot of promise, especially considering Danson is involved.

As for Danson’s part in “The Good Place,” while speaking to fans at Comic-Con, he admitted he feels pressure to live up to the quality of the scripts.

“The real pressure I have to say is that the scripts are so good that you just don’t want to mess it up,” Danson said.

The multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winner should know a good script when he sees one — he starred as lothario Sam Malone in NBC’s legendary comedy “Cheers” from 1982 to 1993. Although the first season’s ratings failed to live up to expectations, it went on to become one of the most popular television series of all time. He also appeared in HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and CBS’s “Becker” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Danson’s return to NBC comedy in “The Good Place” is particularly sweet for the network because the show airs Thursday evenings, which was home to the Must See TV programming block “Cheers” bolstered for years.

The show goes head-to-head with ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” Fox’s “Rosewood” and CBS’s coverage of NFL football, at least until the return of such comedies as “The Big Bang Theory” to Thursdays later in the fall.

While many industry pundits seem concerned that “The Good Place” may not make good against the other networks’ dramas, the move could work to the comedy’s advantage as weary viewers look to Thursdays for a few laughs to wind down the week.

There’s little doubt Bell and Danson have the power to keep viewers engaged, and it can’t hurt that they have a solid supporting cast. Soon after arriving in the afterlife, Eleanor meets her “soulmate,” Chidi, played by William Jackson Harper (“How to Tell You’re a Douchebag,” 2016).

He becomes her confidant as she admits there’s been a mistake, and he struggles to decide what to do about the situation while helping her navigate life in a world where no one gets drunk or even uses curse words.

They occasionally enlist the help of Janet (D’Arcy Carden, “The To Do List,” 2013), a source of information in The Good Place. The cast also includes Jameela Jamil (“KokoPop”) and Manny Jacinto (“The Romeo Section”) as Eleanor’s seemingly perfect neighbors.

The Bold and the Beautiful Steffy’s reaction to the recent development in the Forrester family causes Quinn to grow increasingly concerned.

Meanwhile, Rick turns to an influential friend to help him make one of Maya’s lifelong dreams come true. Bill gloats to Ridge about having the upper hand in saving Forrester Creations. Eager to start his life with her as soon as possible, Bill surprises Brooke with a wedding planner. Steffy tries to appeal to Eric’s emotions regarding his relationship with Quinn and what it’s doing to his family. Concerned about Eric’s state of mind, his family stages an intervention. When RJ returns, he has a negative reaction to the news of his mother’s impending wedding.

Soon, RJ takes it upon himself to confront Bill. Wyatt insists that Steffy give him a clear answer as to the state of their marriage. Despite a lack of success, Quinn encourages Ivy to continue with her assignment.

Days of Our Lives Belle and Shawn have an argument about Chad’s job offer. Gabi can’t help but ask Paul about Sonny when they catch up. Victor assures Brady he can prove he did not kidnap Tate. In prison, Orpheus, Clyde and Xander stew over the wrongs done to them by people in Salem, and then they escape. People are nervous about the escapees as they get ready for Brady and Theresa’s wedding. Eve

shares an emotional moment with Theresa as she helps her sister prepare for the wedding.

Deimos tries to explain to Chloe why he thinks the baby is his. Theresa and Brady’s wedding comes to halt as Orpheus takes Eve hostage and Xander corners Theresa. Kate is on edge when she thinks she spots Clyde. Aiden arranges for Chase to be transferred to a facility in Oregon. Joey, Ciara, Claire and Jade take it easy after their first day of college classes. Steve visits Kayla as she recovers from surgery. Orpheus, Clyde and Xander set up a base of operations and agree to work together to bring down their enemies.

General Hospital Franco and Jason are reluctant, but they accept the state of things. Ava has a trick up her sleeve. After seeing the good in Hayden, Finn promises to help her out. Franco searches for advice from Kiki. Andre works with the PCPD on the GH patient murder case. Kiki is caught off guard by Morgan.

A bitter argument erupts between Carly and Michael.

Julian experiences a change of heart as his trial begins. Lulu confides in Kevin, while Jason makes an emotional plea.

Alexis has a hard time keeping it together. Nelle provides Carly with some words of advice.

The Young and the Restless Phyllis tells Jack that she hasn’t been fully committed to making their marriage work, and she confesses that she thinks of Marco when she looks at him. Jack tells Phyllis they must confront the truth in order to work on their marriage. Later, Phyllis tells Billy that their affair is over because she can’t hurt Jack anymore. As Summer finishes writing her statement at the police station, she sees Luca coming in — she tells him that they’re over and storms off.

Sharon expresses her concern for Dylan’s safety to Mariah, knowing that he’s going after Victor. Paul warns Dylan that his pursuit of Victor will affect his relationship with Nikki. Victor confronts Dylan, insisting he drop the investigation. Sharon becomes nervous when she starts receiving harassing phone calls. Abby is thrown when Stitch tells her he’s ready to try for another baby.
