Gone Preachin’ AMC goes to Texas with its adaptation of Garth Ennis’ ‘Preacher’

ecently, it seems, television has developed a love affair with series based on comic books.

From Fox’s “Gotham” to CW’s trifecta of “The Flash,” “Arrow” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” some would say that there are too many of them — even online streaming services are jumping on the comic book bandwagon, with Netflix’s “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” proving immensely successful.

The list of comic-based shows grows a little this week, when AMC (which is already home to the juggernaut that is “The Walking Dead”) airs the premiere episode of “Preacher” — based on the DC Comics/Vertigo series of the same name — on Sunday, May 22.

The “Preacher” comic series is relatively unique in that its entire run spanned only five years (1995 to 2000). Written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Steve Dillon, the often vulgar comic book told the story of Jesse Custer, a small-town Texas preacher who somehow finds himself possessed by a heavenly being named Genesis, who informs him that God has all but abandoned his creations. Incensed, Custer sets off in search of an audience with God, which proves to be just as difficult as it sounds.

Dominic Cooper, who recently starred in another comic book-inspired series, ABC’s “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” plays the eponymous preacher in the new show, and he’s not the only cast member with a history of starring in comic book series — Ruth Negga of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” plays Custer’s exgirlfriend, Tulip O’Hare. Joseph Gilgun as seen out the main cast is Joseph Gilgun, who starred in the British hit “Misfits” and recently appeared on the big screen in “The Last Witch Hunter” (2015). The BAFTA-nominated actor is set to play Cassidy, an Irish vampire who, through a bizarre chain of events, falls in with Custer and O’Hare.

While on their quest for an audience with God, the trio goes up against a bevy of bizarre people: To start, there’s the racist, conspiracy-spouting sheriff named Hugo Root, played by “Deadwood’s” W. Earl Brown, and his son, Eugene (Ian Colletti, “Rake”), a deadbeat teen rockstar left deformed after a botched suicide attempt. There’s also the Quincannons: Vyla and Odin, played by Elizabeth Perkins (“Weeds”) and Jackie Earle Haley (“Watchmen” , 2009), respectively — a lovely pair of slaughterhouse magnates, local benefactors and proud supporters of the Ku Klux Klan.

in “Preacher” hension, as limited/lesser-known comics have something of a rough history when it comes to adaptations (just look at 2005’s “Constantine” starring Keanu Reeves, and last year’s NBC series of the same name). ” Preacher” was a comic infamous for its dark, edgy content.

In fact, part of the reason it’s taken so long for a TV series to happen is that many networks were turned off when they realized how little Jesse Custer practiced what he preached. In 2008, HBO passed on the series because of the comic’s cynical attitude after almost two years of development.

Despite all of this, “Preacher” showrunner Sam Catlin, who spearheaded the series’ AMC revival alongside actor/comedian Seth Rogen (“Knocked up,” 2007) and Rogen’s longtime partner-in-crime, writer/producer Evan Goldberg (“This Is the End,” 2015), promised fans in an April interview with Collider that, regardless of any changes they make to the content, the show definitely won’t be “Preacherlite” : ” Garth really pushes the envelope in terms of those stories, and I will say we really did, too. ... There’s some silly violence and there’s some crazy violence, but there’s also some real violence and some real sin.”

Nicole gets an apology from Zende for not being more supportive of her decision to help Rick and Maya. Sasha gets comfortable at the Forrester mansion and spends some time with the family’s matriarch. Zende struggles with conflicting feelings for both Nicole and Sasha.

Later, Nicole’s hopes come true. Brooke sees a much different side of Katie and Bill during a display of generosity, however, an unfortunate misunderstanding only adds fuel to the fire between feuding sisters Brooke and Katie.

Days of Our Lives Andre makes a deal that if Aiden gets him out of jail, he will back up Aiden’s story. After Hope tells Rafe she needs to take things one day at a time, she visits Bo’s grave while Aiden secretly watches.

Later, Aiden rents a room at the Martin house from a wary Julie. While Hope is haunted by both romantic and terrifying memories of Aiden, Rafe seeks some fatherly advice from Eduardo. Rafe sees a kiss between Hope and Aiden,

while Eduardo is haunted by his past. Steve travels to Los Angeles to find Joey, but he may already be too late.

Fynn finds an antidote for the virus. Meanwhile, Brady tells Belle about his relationship woes with Theresa. While Theresa tells Anne she wants to investigate Summer, Victor gets an anonymous tip about Summer’s dark past. Justin advises Victor to let go of his vendetta against Deimos.

Kate suggests to Deimos that they elope in Las Vegas, but Deimos insists that she sign a pre-nup. After being kidnapped and brainwashed, Paul gets some help from Marlena to cope with the stress.

General Hospital The relationship between Julian and Alexis begins to come undone. Liz has some bad news to share with Jake.

An executive decision is made

by Monica. The countdown toward the Nurses Ball begins.

Kevin makes an offer to Laura, and their investigation leads them into her past. Tracy receives a shocking delivery and is later approached by Hayden during her time of need. Obrecht snoops around.

Ava pleads with Morgan, while Michael experiences an emotional moment. Brad and Lucas set a wedding date. While Hayden gets a hard dose of reality, Nikolas finds he must take extreme measures to solve a problem.

The Young and the Restless During a heated confrontation, Lily throws a drink in Hilary’s face. Hilary looks for sympathy from Jack, while Lily tells Cane that Hilary is using Devon for his money. Later, Phyllis is beside herself when she finds out Jack confided in Hilary about their relationship. After Nick tells Sharon and Mariah that he’s moving back to the ranch, Mariah volunteers to go through Sage’s belongings at the penthouse and brings them to Nick. Nick makes a shocking discovery in the box of Sage’s things. While visiting Victor in prison, Chelsea tells him she and Adam will ensure he serves his full sentence. Victor then warns Chelsea of the price for disloyalty. Victoria finds herself strongly attracted to Travis when she meets him at the bar, but their meeting is being spied on by a PI hired by Luca.
