Dear Friends, Once again, I start my letter to you with a sincere “I hope you are well.” The physical, mental, and emotional health and safety of our beloved community is the top concern of Temple’s staff, clergy, and board. I am so thankful for all of you! Though we have been thrown many curveballs, we have adapted and evolved to meet the needs of our Temple family and the greater Jewish community. While it feels that we have been constricted, our minds and our hearts are free. We are now, and ever have been, a resilient people. We will always find a way to come together. So many people make our community possible. Some are easily recognizable: our wonderful clergy, the JRM and BFRS teaching staff, and event staff. Some are behind the scenes such as program staff and volunteers who ensure that yahrzeits are observed, the bereaved are comforted, and the sick receive loving care. As we begin to return to in person worship and programs, I hope that you will get to meet many of our dedicated team members and thank them personally for their service.

Letter from our Board President By Aaron Alhadeff

Dear Friends, For more than 120 years, Temple has been a beacon for Reform Judaism in Seattle, Washington State, and beyond. I am deeply honored to be a continuing part of that tradition, and proud that Temple continues to evolve with changing times to meet our community’s needs. It is especially gratifying to be writing to you around the time of Passover, our celebration of freedom. More than at any previous time of history, we members of the Jewish community have the freedom to make choices – about where to work, send our children to school, buy a house, or travel. And we are free to choose what communities to join. By choosing to become part of the Temple family, and to remain engaged with Jewish life and living at Temple, we are each making a significant choice and commitment. To support our community and each other. To be a light in the darkness. To help Temple continue its long tradition as a center for Jewish life. Some of those who have recently joined the Temple family include a young woman recently arrived from the East Coast for a tech job and a young couple relocating here to start their family close to extended family. A long-time Seattle family seeking a synagogue community where the educational excellence meets their high expectations. A single parent committed to giving his children a Jewish education. A newly retired

couple who want to join the same congregation where their grandchildren are in preschool. A newly converted person who wants to help serve his new community, and an individual raised as a secular Jew who has never felt as home as they have at Temple. And the person exploring membership who was brought to tears while watching a Zoom service by the beauty of Chava Mirel’s voice singing the melodies he remembered from childhood. We all have found our community, and our spiritual home, at Temple. As I write this, the days are lengthening, and spring is nearly at hand and with it – we fervently hope – a return to all the ways in which we are accustomed to gather, both in person and in community. With the freedom to choose comes an equal measure of responsibility for our community. Sadly, we have all watched the recent rise of antisemitism around the world, including a gunman violating Shabbat services in Colleyville and graffiti right here in Seattle. The strongest response to these incidents is to not be overtaken by fear but rather to strengthen our own engagement and commitment to the Jewish community. This is exactly what we demonstrate as a community when we come together virtually or in person to celebrate all of our milestone moments. As long as we keep coming together our future is bright.

Perhaps no story in our tradition holds as much power as the story of the Exodus from Egypt. Passover, our yearly holiday in which we recount this story, remains the holiday the greatest number of Jews celebrate. Not inconsequentially, the ancient rabbis designed our Passover Seder precisely for us to experience the story. We eat Matzah to symbolize the hardship under which the Israelites left Egypt. We dip food in salt water to represent the tears cried. We recline to imagine the burdens lifted from us. We do not merely tell the story of achieving freedom, we experience it. Our texts instruct us, “in every generation a person must see themselves as if they escaped from Egypt.” (Mishnah Pesachim 10:5) Everyone of us, then, is invited to experience and be in awe of the miracle of being personally freed by God. But the story of the Exodus presents us with two concepts of freedom. The first comes in one of the first moments of true freedom for the Israelites. They break out in joyful song, a song from which Mi Chamocha is excerpted. No longer oppressed by Egyptians, a great weight has been lifted from their backs. For the first time in generations, the people are not forced to work. They can do as they please. As they cross the Sea of Reeds and escape from the pursuing Egyptians, they are overwhelmed by relief and happiness. Freedom inspires the heights of human emotion, and I imagine many of us can

relate to those feelings. What brings you so much joy that you want to sing? The feelings of elation give way to a second type of freedom. Soon after the Exodus, the Israelites are presented with a litany of laws. It is clear they are not free to do just as they please. Rather, freedom means the Israelites can now make choices and take actions to build a supportive community. Thirty-six times, our rabbis say, the Torah instructs us to “love the ger for you were gerim in Egypt.” While ger is often translated as “stranger,” a better translation is resident-alien or immigrant. It is a reminder that as once we are free, we now need to care for those who are more vulnerable; those who have fewer freedoms. The Passover story, in this way, presents us with these understandings of freedom. The freedom of Mi Chamocha encourages us to embrace the excitement and joy of newfound liberty. Our litany of laws reminds us that freedom means responsibility; that freedom is about building a caring community. As spring sprouts and many of us emerge with fresh freedoms, what are you most looking forward to doing? How will you exercise your freedoms? From what do you want to be free? How will you hold feelings of both joy and freedom to build a community that reflects your values?

A Job Well Done and Much Appreciated Sam Paddor Temple member Sam Paddor recently completed his Eagle Scout project at our Bellevue campus. The project involved cleaning out and installing screens in the basketball court drains as the drains fill with debris and cause problems for the building. He also installed beauty bark and repainted a track on which JRM students drive their cars. Sam was assisted by members of BSA Troop 457 on Mercer Island. The Power of Travel By Stacey Delcau, Director of Education

Four days of freedom from the rain and their parents! That’s what 18 of our 8th and 9th graders experienced over mid-winter break in February on our “annual” trip to Los Angeles. We are so happy that we are able to travel again as a community and help our teens to truly see the world through a Jewish lens. Our goal is not only to have fun in the sun but also to experience a different Jewish community. Our travelers started out with a kosher food scavenger hunt of the PicoRobertson area that houses over 15 synagogues and 30 kosher restaurants. We had guest speakers visit from Beit T’shuvah, the only Jewish residential

addiction treatment center in the country. We attended Shabbat services and dinner at Ikar, one of the most dynamic synagogues in LA. We also had a chance to experience saying the Shema on the beach Saturday morning before spending the day at Disneyland. Before traveling back to Seattle, we attended church at the First AME church in LA, experiencing the welcoming community and passionate desire to make a difference in the world. Now that our 8th and 9th graders have a newfound sense of freedom and pride in their ability to travel, we can’t wait to travel with them in the coming high school years to see the rest of the world through their fresh Jewish lens!

Visiting Givat Haviva International School By Holly Levin

In October 2019, our group of 30 Temple members traveled to Israel with Rabbi and Cindy Weiner and, while there, were invited to visit Givat Haviva International School (GHIS). This residential school, located east of Caeserea and south of Haifa, is committed to changing the world by building bridges and pursuing peace between young Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, and their families. The 130-member student body is comprised of 25% Israeli Jews, 25% Israeli Arabs, and 50% international high school students from different cultures and religions, many of whom come from impoverished countries and conflict zones (such as Kosovo, South Sudan, and Liberia). The students live, debate, struggle, study, and learn together, while earning an International Baccalaureate Diploma.

the rich diversity of the region. The program has an emphasis on gaining a better appreciation of Israel, its people, and the culture. All GHIS classes are taught in English. There is a need for tutors willing to Zoom with students to sharpen their language skills. Students are also in need of guidance when applying for college and look to volunteers to counsel them in international applications and student aid.

After a campus tour, the GHIS students shared their vision of becoming leaders in their home countries, forming a global network of graduates who want to work together to find peaceful and productive solutions to some of the world’s problems, so that we can transform the Middle East and beyond.

Jordan Jaffe will become a bat mitzvah on April 2, 2022. Jordan is the daughter of Brian & Cindy Jaffe. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Ivan & Myrna Jaffe and Dr. Robert & Christine Boltuch. Jordan is a 7th grader at Catharine Blaine K-8. She enjoys swimming, tennis, listening to music, and spending time with friends and family (especially her grandparents). For her mitzvah project, Jordan is donating her time and talents (cooking, reading, and crafting) at Cogir Retirement Community.

Tori Lauren Waldbaum will become a bat mitzvah on April 23, 2022. Tori is the daughter of Halli & Brett Waldbaum and the sister of Julia. She is the granddaughter of Sue & Larry Broder and Nina & Rodney Waldbaum. Tori is a 7th grader at Inglewood Middle School. She enjoys softball, soccer, skiing, art, TV, hanging out with her family and friends, and playing with her dog Gizmo. For her mitzvah project, Tori will be collecting donations for the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an organization that protects and rehabilitates elephants.

SYDNEY ANNE SIROTA Sydney Anne Sirota will become a bat mitzvah on April 23, 2022. Sydney is the daughter of Jason & Andrea Sirota and the sister of Benjamin and Eli. She is the granddaughter of Joan & Phil Bauman, Anne Sirota & Jerry Savin, and Mike & Pam Sirota. Sydney is a 7th grader at Chinook Middle School. She enjoys contemporary dance, ballet, math, swimming, art, summer camp at Kalsman, traveling, and hanging with friends and family. For her mitzvah project, Sydney will be organizing a drive to gather donations of pet food, supplies, toys, and cat litter for the Seattle Humane Society to distribute to lowincome pet owners, seniors, and pet owners living with HIV/AIDS or cancer.

CLAIRE HANNAH HORTON Claire Hannah Horton will become a bat mitzvah on April 30, 2022. Claire is the daughter of Jana & Aaron Horton and the sister of Ethan. She is the granddaughter of Karen & Mike Mendelsohn and Janice & Peter Horton. Claire is a 7th grader at Cougar Mountain Middle School. She enjoys cooking, softball, tennis, swimming, skiing, playing her ukulele, vacationing with her family, playing with her puppy Daisy, and she’s an artist. For her mitzvah project, Claire will be conducting a food drive.

LUCINDA GRACE LEVITON Lucinda Grace Leviton will become a bat mitzvah on May 14, 2022. Lucinda is the daughter of Jamie & Brandon Leviton and the sister of Zoe. She is the granddaughter of Linda & Dan Bledsoe and Ann & Fred Leviton. Lucinda is an 8th grader at Denny International Middle School. She enjoys playing soccer and hanging out with her friends. Lucinda is still deciding on what she wants to do for her mitzvah project.

TILLIE KAHN Tillie Hope Kahn will become a bat mitzvah on May 21, 2022. Tillie is the daughter of Rachael Hannah & Alan Kahn and the sister of Nate Kahn. She is the granddaughter of Ben & Jean Kahn (z”l), Elisa Miller (z”l), and James Nash Jr. (z”l). Tillie attends TOPS K-8 for school. She enjoys being in nature, reading, and spending time with family and friends. For her mitzvah project, Tillie will be picking up garbage from local public forests and beaches.

JUSTEN DAVID BIENSTOCK Justen David Bienstock will become a bar mitzvah on June 18, 2022. Justen is the son of Dr. Brian & Lisa Bienstock and the brother of Brandon & Tyler. He is the grandson of Howard & Linda Klein and Steven & Diane Bienstock, and the great-grandson of Beatrice Silver. Justen is a 7th grader at Islander Middle School. He enjoys playing tennis, basketball, piano, soccer, acting, spending time with his friends and family, and being part of the Mercer Island community. For his mitzvah project, Justen will be coordinating his own version of “Operation Sandwich” with his friends and family by making sack lunches for a local homeless shelter.

RILEY MIA ZEITLER Riley Mia Zeitler will become a bat mitzvah on May 28, 2022. Riley is the daughter of Erin & Daniel Zeitler and the sister of Mason. She is the granddaughter of Wendy & Gary Kaplan and Joyce & Ken Zeitler, and the great-granddaughter of Diane Kaplan. Riley is a 7th grader at Chinook Middle School. She enjoys dance, travel, and hanging with her friends. For her mitzvah project, Riley will be helping at the Renewal Food Bank Food Drive.

Ally Rosenstein will become a bat mitzvah on June 25, 2022. Ally is the daughter of Alex & Dan Rosenstein and the sister of Haley. She is the granddaughter of Steve & Debbie Lawson and Nick & Lilia Rosenstein, and the great-granddaughter of Shirley Kulman. Ally is a 7th grader at Cougar Mountain Middle School. She loves to travel, shop, drink bubble tea, bake, sew, binge TV shows, and cheer with Issaquah Youth Cheer! For her mitzvah project, Ally will be organizing a stuffed animal drive for Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Grow and Learn This Spring By Rabbi Kate Speizer, Director of Adult Learning

ADULT HEBREW Basic Hebrew skills go a long way towards understanding the deeper significance of our blessings, prayers, and biblical texts. Using the Union for Reform Judaism curriculum for adult Hebrew learning, the goal is for students to gain and strengthen intermediate decoding and comprehension skills in this series of four workbooks. The emphasis is on Classical Hebrew, as it is the language of biblical and liturgical texts. KELLER FAMILY LECTURE Established through the vision and generosity of the late Frances and the late Howard Keller, the Annual Keller Family Lecture Series draws the best and the brightest national luminaries from the fields of art, culture, literature, and Jewish life to the Greater Seattle Community. CLERGY INSTITUTE We are pleased to welcome Dr. Dara Horn as the 2022 Clergy Institute scholar. In her 2021 book of essays, People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present, Horn asks why do so many people seem to love dead Jews, but continue to ignore the living ones? In 2022, the Holocaust continues to make headlines, fill our films and fiction, and generate extraordinary interest far beyond our community. Yet ignorance and indifference towards Jew-hatred today seems to be higher than ever. People Love Dead Jews is the winner of the 2021 National Jewish Book Award for Contemporary Jewish Life and Practice and a finalist for the 2021 Kirkus Prize in Nonfiction. Join us for the 41st Clergy Institute, our annual opportunity for interfaith study and discourse, on Thursday, May 19 from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. Celebrating the Temple Team ERAN SABO (he/him/his) | Assistant Director of Education & Hebrew Coordinator

Eran was born and raised in Israel, and in 2012 moved to NYC to complete a BFA at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Judaism has always been a huge part of his identity; one that has morphed, evolved, and expanded since his immigration to the US. He keeps in constant dialogue with his Judaism, the Hebrew language, music, and mindfulness. At Temple, Eran manages the Hebrew School program, supervises the Sunday Bellevue Religion School program, and leads online Hebrew School T’filah. He will never say no to a cream cheese lox bagel (everything, no onion, extra capers, please), a Sunday Yoga class, and any Stevie Wonder album!

JESSIE STOTT | Teen Engagement Coordinator Born and raised in West Seattle, Jessie Stott grew up at Temple. Her first job was as a Madricha in high school. After earning a dual degree in Special and Elementary Education and certification in Early Childhood Development at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, she began working as a special education teacher and soon moved back to Seattle to be closer to family. Jessie started at Temple as a Sunday School and Hebrew teacher and then in 2019, became the 6th Grade Coordinator and in 2020, the Teen Engagement Coordinator. Her favorite part of the job is working with her tweens and teens, supporting their goals, and boosting their confidence within themselves. Jessie loves music festivals, karaoke, traveling around the world, and long road trips with friends. Fun fact: before the pandemic, Jessie was a karaoke host four nights a week at two local bars.

Membership Your Annual Membership Commitment (“dues”) is one of the most meaningful and significant philanthropic commitments you make each year and the heartbeat of all we do. By choosing to be part of the Temple family you bring worship, holidays, and dynamic learning to life. You support our clergy team and staff, so they in turn can support every member of our congregation. You provide options to engage during the pandemic both in-person and through enhanced, secure streaming. You welcome everyone to Temple, regardless of their personal circumstances.

Areas of Personal Interest In addition to annual membership commitments, members and friends of Temple choose to support specific programs through “named funds.” Funds that support Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool, Endless Opportunities, and Social Justice (Tikkun Olam) can be matched by employees’ companies, leveraging the impact to Temple.

The Annual Campaign The Annual Campaign takes place during the High Holy Days, and together with annual membership commitments, supports every aspect of Temple life while also making special initiatives possible each year.

Tributes Tribute giving is a way for you to honor special milestones, like B’nai Mitzvah or anniversaries, to remember loved ones, or to thank clergy and staff. Tribute recipients are notified by Temple, so your loved ones know how deeply you care about them. They may be made either to specific funds, or to Temple’s “General Fund” to support greatest needs at the time.

Pay It Forward While annual gifts enable Temple to offer meaningful worship, education, and programming each year, when you make a legacy gift you confirm your place in the fabric of Temple’s 123-year-old history and ensure that Temple will be serve our community for generations to come. The simplest ways to make a legacy gift are to designate Temple as a beneficiary in your will, individual retirement account, or life insurance policy. Members who share their intent to leave a legacy are recognized in the L’Dor VaDor Society.

Sacred Journeys Reaches Out During the Pandemic By Laurie Warshal Cohen

Sacred Journeys reaches out to our congregants who have suffered a loss. Our volunteers make condolence calls, send sympathy cards, mail yahrzeit candles, put on the annual Kever Avot service, and provide stones at the cemetery to place on graves. Throughout the pandemic, Sacred Journeys volunteers have contacted members of our Temple family who have lost loved ones. Perhaps because we have all been cut off from friends and family during these times of grief, our volunteers have been able to talk to more congregants because we are all home so much more. SJ volunteers are not always able find community roots so, in that case, our calls go to family members, whose loved ones have passed away out of town. Let me share stories from our volunteers: One volunteer recently made a call to a family she had known growing up in Seattle. Their parents had gone to high school together! This created a sense of family and community which was so important during this time of grief.

Another caller was able to trace her family back a few generations to find shared relatives with the daughter of the deceased who didn’t even know about this part of their family in Seattle. She thought she was the only family member alive and now wanted to reach out to the “new family.”

Another member of our Temple family expressed how difficult it was for her to observe a yahrzeit in a Zoom service. When she received the yahrzeit candle SJ sent to her on the first anniversary of her father’s death, she was able to light the candle at home during the zoom kaddish.
