Greetings From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends, We put each issue of Tidings together weeks in advance, which makes it hard to write a letter that will be relevant when you read it, as the situation in Israel continues to evolve.

What I am sure will not change, though, is how proud I am to be a member of a community that is at once heartbroken and yet resilient. Support for Israel runs deep and wide at Temple De Hirsch Sinai and we draw strength from each other every day. Chazak Chazak v’nichazeik – be strong, be strong, may we be strong.

Before the war began, we celebrated High Holy Days. It was such a pleasure to greet so many Temple members, old and new, as they came into services. I treasure the High Holy Days as a time when we gather together – to worship, learn, laugh, pray, catch up on each other’s lives, and usher in a New Year.

Perhaps more than any other during my time at Temple, this new year seemed to augur abundant possibilities. So many exciting new programs and events: our “small groups” initiative, Connections @ Temple, for those with special affinities; new classes with Rabbi Kate Speizer and Rabbi Laura Rumpf; new “pre-ligious school” for the pre-K set monthly on Sundays in Seattle; and so many other offerings contained within these pages. And so many opportunities to add light to the world, including welcoming a refugee family sponsored by Temple.

That light is needed now more than ever. The vigil Temple hosted in the early days after Israel was attacked provided our community a time and space to mourn together, pray together, and rise from despair to some sense of hopefulness for the future.

All this is made possible through your generous support of Temple, through the Annual Campaign, membership, matching and more: thank you.

The light Temple shines into the world is also made possible by some “unsung heroes.” Throughout the year, our Facilities team works behind the scenes to care for our facilities, set up, clean up and make sure our members have

all that they need. Led by Associate Executive Director Jessie Cunningham, the Facilities team is onsite from early in the morning until late many nights. Cornell Ferrell, Demetrius Washington (Seattle) and Vincent Greene (Bellevue), and Hope Jose-Day take care of all the details with grace and good humor, and I am so grateful for their diligence and dedication. Their extraordinary efforts at our vigil deserve thanks and praise.

Another group of “unsung heroes” is more front-andcenter at Temple, but nonetheless deserves a tremendous shout-out, now more than ever: our security guards and off-duty officers. I can’t name all of them here, but I extend my deepest appreciation to them, with special thanks to Phil Smell, Acting Lt. Will Cravens and Officer Sam Hurst.

Phil has been guarding at Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool and Temple services for 13 years. He recently told me that he considers it his mission in life to protect our community. And Acting Lt. Cravens, who arranges off-duty officers in Seattle and also guards us himself, has been working at Temple for 30 years. Sam hasn’t been working at Temple quite as long, but has made a real impact in Seattle on Sunday mornings as he directs traffic.

Temple is blessed with many other dedicated staff – too numerous to mention here – who attend to the myriad details of running a synagogue with two campuses and a cemetery/ mausoleum. I am profoundly honored to work with all of them, and so grateful for their efforts.

I look forward to seeing you at Temple, whether at one of our signature events like Chanukah or Purim, a quiet Friday night service, or a raucous Tot Shabbat. If you need anything from Temple, especially during these difficult days, please give us a call.

As we move into 2024, I’m excited to see our capital campaign taking shape. Thank you to the generous donors who have already contributed over $15.7M toward this project. Look for monthly updates from our campaign committee coming soon.

As we recently announced, our Executive Director, Lisa Horowitz, will be retiring next year. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from Lisa during my time on the Board, and I look forward to continuing to work with her on the capital campaign. Our search committee, chaired by Mike Ehrenberg, is beginning its work this fall. I look forward to updating you as we move along in this process.

Dear Friends, I’m writing to you just ten days after the outbreak of war in Israel. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn for those we’ve lost and continue to pray for those who are suffering.

I hope that, like me, you have been buoyed by the support of your Temple family during this difficult time.

Whether you attended our community vigil on October 10th, donated in support of Israeli families, or just checked in on a friend, you are one of the reasons why I’m so proud to be part of this community.

As we approach Thanksgiving and the season of gratitude, I wanted to give thanks for everything Temple makes possible – in good times and bad. In the past few weeks alone, we’ve had the privilege of hearing from inspiring guest speakers who have helped us turn our anger into action; learned how to navigate tough conversations with our children and support their

“ A mitzvah is a candle, and the Torah is light” Proverbs 6:23 I am writing as we pass a pivotal point in our year, when our nights become longer than our days. We enter “the big dark,” as darkness slithers into our mornings and afternoons. Darkness, too, carries figurative significance. There are so many things in our world that seem to be adding darkness (not light) to our lives: a fight for democracy in Israel and in our country, a crisis for asylum-seekers and refugees, a broken healthcare system, a lack of housing, rising inflation, the targeting of LGBTQ+ people, and more. Just recently, we suffered through the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

The violence rages on and so many innocent people are dead. At times, it feels like the darkness envelops us.

I love that, in dark times, Judaism provides a light.

It is no coincidence that Chanukah arrives during the darkest time of the year. When we most need it, our tradition provides a ritual to bring light to the darkness.

We add a candle each night, for, as the Talmudic sage Hillel teaches, we always increase in holiness and never decrease. And the wonderful thing about flames is that a flame can light another without diminishing itself.

Proverbs teaches us that combining Jewish action with Jewish teaching creates light and that Torah has the potential to illuminate our path. But the flame of Torah depends on our candles of action. The only way to drive out darkness is through light.

Every day, we can perform any number of Jewish actions. From the food we eat, to the way we treat our pets, to how we pay employees or workers, to how we relate to the natural world, each day provides opportunities to live out Jewish values. The value of Tikkun Olam, repairing our world, is no exception. There are so many ways we can bring light to the darkness of the world. They include donating goods and money, volunteering, advocating for just policies, showing up in solidarity with others, and seeing each person we encounter as made in the image of God. Like the lighting of a candle with another candle, you might find that rather than diminishing our light, the act of helping others will only bring more light into the world. In this dark season, may we each find ways to add more and more light.

This will be my final Rabbi’s Corner; my time at Temple is coming to an end. You, the Temple community, have brought so much light into my life. I will cherish our connections, shared joys and sorrows, and our time together. Those lights will shine for many years with me.

Thank you for everything, and keep spreading the light.

Gabriella Miller will become a bat mitzvah on November 4, 2023. Gabriella is the daughter of Corey and Katherine Miller and the sister of Rina and Bella. She is the granddaughter of Rabbi Jay & Elise Miller and Gregory & Eugenya Zinger. Gabriella is a 7th grader at Willows Preparatory School. She enjoys cooking and baking, dancing, going to camp, spending time with friends and her cat, Minou. She is a singer in the Bellevue Youth Choir. For her mitzvah project, Gabriella is creating blankets and pillows for cats and dogs for PAWS.

Dante Lanham will become a bar mitzvah on January 13, 2024. Dante is the son of Catherine & Grace Lanham, the brother of Esther, Alondra and Cort, and the grandson of Jack Lanham, Susan & Fred Jarrett, and Julie (z”l) & Edward Niestempski (z”l). Dante is a 7th grader at Kellogg Middle School and enjoys playing sports (lacrosse, soccer, downhill skiing), playing the tenor saxophone, and hanging out with friends.

For his mitzvah project, Dante is working with Puget Soundkeeper to organize beach cleanups to help keep our oceans clean.

SADIE PERSON Sadie Person will become a bat mitzvah on November 11, 2023. Sadie is the daughter of Andrew & Leslie Person and the sister of Tucker Person. She is the granddaughter of Ron & Margie Danz. Sadie is a 7th grader at the Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences. She enjoys dance, skiing, and volleyball. For her mitzvah project, Sadie has designed and created an activity kit for patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Quarterly Forest Restoration at Angle Lake Park Join Temple’s environmental group, Shomrei Adamah, to spend time at this beautiful lakeside park and make

a difference! We will work to restore and maintain the nature trail’s native forest by weeding, removing invasive species, mulching, etc. Great for all ages; no experience is necessary.

Tiny Home Building at Sound Foundations NW Join us at Sound Foundations NW in SoDo and help us construct a tiny home in a day! This hands-on work provides the opportunity to create housing for those in need. Each tiny home is built to last 20 years and will house up to 60 people over the course of its life. No experience is necessary; must be 16 or older to volunteer.

Serving Meals at Porchlight Men’s Shelter Porchlight is a new shelter for men experiencing homelessness on the Eastside. Volunteering there consists of preparing a meal for around 100 people. You can prepare the meal in your home, at Porchlight itself, or potentially at Temple. We will provide plenty of recipes if cooking for that many feels intimidating. Once you prepare the meal, you will serve it at Porchlight to the people in the shelter.

HOLIDAYS AND EVENTS

MLK Weekend: Each year, we partner with FAME Church to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Join us for Shabbat services at Temple, Sunday morning services at FAME, and the city-wide MLK Day March & Rally.

Tu Bishvat: Join us as we mark the birthday of the trees during Shabbat services and special volunteer opportunities.

Passover: Last year, we debuted the Elijah Initiative to match anyone looking for a seder table with a host.

We’re excited to continue growing this program this year; look for more information in the spring!

TIKKUN OLAM

New Welcome Circle Initiative

This fall, we’re embarking on a new initiative as part of our tikkun olam (social justice) work.

Inspired by the most repeated biblical imperative to welcome the stranger, by the Jewish story of the search for home, and by many of our individual family histories of immigration, we are undertaking the holy work of welcoming a refugee family. Led by a team of community members and supported by the work of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), we will provide this family with essential services that they need to start building new lives for themselves, from food and affordable housing to English classes and employment services. We will also work toward their long-term integration into the Seattle community.

We do not know details of the family yet, nor where they are from, but we do know it will take a community effort to house and provide for them.

We are hoping for your support in providing housing and necessities as they transition to life here. At this point, monetary support is most helpful. Donations to Temple’s Annual Campaign through the Siegal Tikkun Olam Fund will directly support our work. (Donations to this fund may be matched by employer matching programs; ask your HR team for more information.)

YOUTH PROGRAMMING

New “Pre-Ligious School” Program for Families With Young Children

Building on the success of our worship opportunities for families with young children, we are thrilled to announce a new program for preschoolers. Starting November 12th, we will be offering a “Pre-ligious School” learning and activity opportunity with Denise Weinstein.

Through engaging activities, songs and food, will cover the Jewish year, holidays, rituals and more!

Children will learn about the significance of Shabbat, Passover, Purim and more while building connections with one another.

This program will take place once a month on Sunday mornings in Seattle. Please be on the lookout for registration to ensure we know how much to order in terms of supplies and food. See you soon!

Nefesh L’Nefesh: Creating Community & Providing Support So many families are experiencing the impact of cognitive and memory challenges. Those who are directly impacted need care and opportunities for community and purposeful activities. Those who are caregivers need to connect with others to share resources, exchange advice, and receive support to live with the daunting responsibilities that come with this stage in life.

We’d like to convene gatherings of Temple members who are living with these challenges. Please reach out to Rabbi Weiner’s Executive Assistant, Jennifer Phillips, at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org, or Temple member Terry Brashem at terrybrashem@gmail.com.

Tapuzim: A Jewish LGBTQ+ Group LGBTQ+ Jews and allies are encouraged to join us on the first Saturday of the month for lunch on the Seattle Campus. Expect conversation, connection, and delicious food to share with queer Jewish family.

Sacred Journeys is supported by the William and Edith Warshal Fund for Sacred Journeys, and by donations from Temple members.

This is the reason that our tradition set aside a time to remember those who have passed away in recent days and years or decades ago. Our Kever Avot service attended by members of our Temple family gathered online and at the Hills of Eternity Cemetery to remember loved ones by lighting a candle in their memory.

As our year begins, Sacred Journeys volunteers are ready to make condolence calls to Temple members who have losses in their families. We will come together to mail yahrzeit candles to families when the anniversary of their loved ones occur.

Sacred Journeys has welcomed four new volunteers who are interested in taking on leadership roles in Sacred Journeys in the future. They are Stephanie Carmel, Rachel Stoner, Ilana Cone Kennedy, and Dawn Thomas. All four have been active in Temple leadership and community and we welcome their enthusiasm for the Sacred Journeys mission.

Temple’s Annual Campaign fundraiser runs through December 31, 2023, so there’s still time to give! We provide a variety of options for contributing, making it easier than ever to support Temple.

High Holy Days Fund (Greatest Need): provide Temple with maximum flexibility, enabling our caring clergy and staff to provide innovative, in-person and virtual worship and education for all ages, and help pay for the costs of technology and enhanced security during a period of growing antisemitism Siegal Tikkun Olam Fund: support new opportunities to repair the world, addressing urgent issues including refugee resettlement through the Welcome Circle, food insecurity, the environment, homelessness, and poverty Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool Fund (JRM): offer young families starting their Jewish journeys access to the highest-quality early childhood education and childcare in the region Endless Opportunities Fund (EO): engage thousands of seniors throughout our greater community for lifelong learning and social gatherings
