Rabbi's Corner

By Rabbi Avi Fine Earlier this month, as a snowstorm pummeled the East Coast, I wondered if snow days even exist in our online world. What a sad victim of the pandemic that would be. Even if we have not been blessed (or cursed) by snow falling at lower elevations here, this time of year I find myself thinking about snow. I love the beautiful flakes as they fall, the way snow transforms a landscape and the silence that it brings. And I love that in the middle of the winter, we celebrate Tu BiShvat.

A few weeks ago, we marked the birthday of the trees and one of the Jewish holidays that most roots us in the natural world. While Tu BiShvat may have originated in the land of Israel (where we know the climate is a little different than here), it provides a wonderful metaphor for us each year. In my head, I picture Tu BiShvat as a small, twisted green stalk emerging from the snow. That green emerging through a mound of white snow reminds me that gam zeh yavor–that this too shall pass. Tu BiShvat reminds us to celebrate new growth when we need it most. This year, we at Temple celebrated Tu BiShvat by sharing pictures of us outdoors, by holding Tu BiShvat seders and by participating in the Big Bold Jewish Climate Fest. Each connected us to nature, and the climate fest in particular offered actions we can take to ensure our natural world and the people who live upon it can still thrive.

The Torah teaches that a person is a tree of the field (Deuteronomy 20:19). I invite you to consider yourself as a tree. Are you deeply rooted in the ground, or are your roots shallow? What keeps you rooted right now? How do you want to grow? What are your branches reaching for? Are you tapped into what sustains you?

Tu BiShvat reminds us that things are looking up. It also foreshadows more upcoming Jewish holidays; Purim is just around the corner and Passover comes a month after. Each holiday provides us the opportunity to reflect on how we are growing this year.

May we each find beauty, transformation and a little bit of the silence that the snow brings.

One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, With COVID Vaccines for All: Israel’s Wildly Successful Operation Return to Life

It’s a bright morning, the day after Christmas 2020. I’m laying in bed half asleep when a notification banner pops up on my phone for an article about the COVID-19 vaccine rollout around the world. While I’m astonished to see Israel leading the way with 3% of the country vaccinated, I figure that they probably just gave some shots to the healthcare workers and will be overtaken by the western powers shortly. Fast forward two weeks to January 10th, 2021: Over 21% of Israel’s population has been vaccinated against the novel coronavirus, including 72% of its citizens over 60. There’s enough vaccine in Israel to give all of them a second dose (Pomerantz). Meanwhile, in the United States, my grandfather, a 79-year-old surgeon with heart disease, is turned away from a vaccination center in Delaware. Just 2.5% of the U.S. has received the first dose (Fourteen). Both countries have been plagued by the virus, which has opened a gash in the economy of each. However, how the allies handled it are two different stories. The U.S. attempted to salvage the economy and protect freedom of choice by not implementing national mask mandates or lockdowns, while Israel is currently in its third country-wide total lockdown in an attempt to save as many lives as possible (Pomerantz).

The Israelis, however, found another way to save their economy: the vaccine. Inadequate storage facilities, lack of cooperation between federal bureaus and levels of government, and miles of bureaucratic red tape have slowed the U.S. vaccination effort to a crawl while Israel is the polar opposite.

National unity, a “leave nobody behind” mentality, and several well-thought-out strategies to procure and distribute the vaccine have put Israel on a path to reopen completely by late March, well ahead of the rest of the world. As with many things in Israel, the military is in charge, so the vaccine drive is technically an operation: Operation Return to Life.

The first step in Israel’s vaccination campaign was to secure enough doses of a vaccine for its population of just under 9.3 million. It struck early, ordering an undisclosed amount, estimated at around 6 million doses, from Moderna in June. This was over a month before any other country finalized a deal with a drugmaker. The US, UK, and Japan secured tens or hundreds of millions of doses each in July with the EU and Canada following close behind in August (Murdock). Israeli officials figured that the drugmakers may not have been interested in quickly fulfilling an order of a mere 6 million doses if it meant delaying the multi-billion dollar deals the Western giants signed, so signing a deal as early as possible was tantamount to the success of the entire campaign.

In addition to its order from Moderna, Israel ordered 14 million doses from Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca in November. So how did this tiny Middle Eastern enclave convince the biotech giants to take such a small order and fulfill it in time in the first place? The answer lies in its institutions, the ones 6

that have existed since the country’s founding 73 years ago, and the immense value the country puts on preserving life at any cost in line with the Jewish value Pikuach Nefesh, that preserving life is so important that one should go to any length possible to save one. Israel has demonstrated this in the past, by accepting millions of Holocaust survivors, survivors of the Arab expulsion, and Refuseniks, and by dropping leaflets warning nearby civilians of incoming precision strikes on militant targets in Gaza. Israel pitched itself as a sort of fourth-stage clinical trial with millions of subjects to prove the vaccine’s ability to inoculate entire countries. Ran Nir-Paz, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, said that Pfizer views the country as a “test case… a kind of proof of concept to show that the vaccines work” (Hendrix). In that pitch, the Israelis highlighted several specifics that make Israel uniquely suited to be in a position to be the world’s test case.

First and foremost is its robust universal healthcare system. Unlike other countries that have one national Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Israel has four that compete for funding and customers (Vaccine). The HMOs are well-staffed; the largest employer in the country is Clalit, one of the four HMOs, with 45,000 employees (Vaccine). The HMOs aren’t rookies in the vaccination game, either. They ran the campaign to vaccinate against H1N1 as well as several other diseases.

Israel is also home to a very diverse population. Its citizens include large numbers of Bedouins, Arabs, Druze, and Jews with diasporic roots in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as many other small minorities, meaning that any data collected would apply to billions of people around the world.

Finally, all four HMOs have digitized health records that allow for easy collection and extraction of data. In addition to the HMO data, Israel also maintains a national vaccination registry. While originally used for childhood vaccinations, today it is used to monitor the progress of the COVID-19 vaccine distribution program (Hendrix). The immense amount of data that is collected ensures that there is sufficient data for groups that were underrepresented in clinical trials, which is very attractive to the pharmaceutical giants (Efrati). On January 14 results started rolling in from Clalit, which released data from 200,000 vaccinated citizens compared to 200,000 unvaccinated, a sample size many times larger than any clinical trial run by a single drugmaker. They found that just two weeks after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, recipients were 33% less likely to contract COVID-19 (Schwartz). On January 28 the Health Ministry announced that only 317 of 715,425 Israelis contracted COVID-19 more than one week after receiving the second dose. The ministry also noted that nearly 3 million Israelis have received one jab and 1.5 million more have received two. Israel made it clear that the data shared with the drugmakers would not be linked to individuals and would also be made available to the public eventually, which is why it is possible for anyone to see Israel’s vaccine numbers change several times a day on websites such as Our World In Data.

Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool

Celebrating Tu BiShvat: Our classes had so much fun exploring all things related to trees! Science, sensory, music, books, we did it all. In honor of the birthday of trees, students and teachers focused on strengthening connections to nature and the environment. In addition to class based projects we did an all-school tasting. Our older students had a rating card to note their likes and dislikes, and note flavors like salty, sweet, and sour. Younger students gave a thumbs up or thumbs down and teachers logged preferences for the group. The kids loved trying new fruits and learning about all the ways we can show gratitude for trees and care for the earth.

In the spirit of Tu BiShvat, springtime on the horizon, and trees beginning to blossom and grow, JRM Preschool is growing, too. We reopened in July with 21 students. Now we safely welcome nearly 40 students every day, with more scheduled to start in the coming months. The JRM teachers continue to do a remarkable job managing Covid safety while fostering the growth and learning of every child.

We are working on preparing materials to enroll students for the 2021-2022 school year. All current JRM families will have a priority registration window to enroll before spaces are offered to families in the wait pool. We expect the program to be full in the fall! If you are interested in joining the JRM community for the 2021-2022 year, we recommend joining our wait pool as soon as possible. There is no commitment to complete the Request for Care form. We currently offer care for children age 3 months - 5 years.

Families with Young Children

When the pandemic began, Temple quickly pivoted to provide online programming for the entire community. During these many months we have learned a lot about online engagement across the demographics, especially with our youngest congregants.

Our tried-and-true, Friday night Shabbat Junior shifted from an in-person dinner and service, open to the community, to a 30 minute online singalong. It is a private (Zoom) gathering where families and kiddos can see one another and sing along with Chava Mirel and Rabbi Schulman. Parents set screens up on dinner tables, in living rooms, in the kitchen while they cook, and kiddos get some shpilkes out.

We have continued our partnership with PJ Library and the Jewish Federation of Seattle on Bim Bam Baby Havdalah. It is another opportunity to sing some Shabbat songs, hear a story, and for children and parents to get to check in and connect with each other.

We are very excited about our two new Shabbat programs for 2021. Once a month we gather via Zoom for Shabbat Shluffie at the Animal Sanctuary with expert ECE teacher and musician, Teacher Bando.

He sings songs, reads a book, and does some mindfulness exercises with the kids (and animals!) to help everyone wind down before nap time. Music & Mindfulness offers an interactive element one Shabbat morning a month, as Miss Ruthie leads the children in songs, models some mindfulness practices, and invites children and parents to connect with each other and themselves.

Finally, we are mid-way through our first year of Do-It-Yourself Jewish ritual guidance with The Art of Shabbat Curriculum. It is a video-based introduction to all of the rituals of Shabbat, from beginning preparations for the day, through Saturday night and setting intentions for the week to come.

Bridge Family Religion School

by Jessie Stott and Stacey Delcau, RJE The news from the world regarding teens and their struggles during this challenging time can be quite depressing. At Temple we are so blessed to have thriving programs for our teens to help foster connections and make them feel a bit less alone.

Our 9th-12th grade social/youth group program TDSY offers teens opportunities to create their own bonding experiences, gain leadership skills, and make important social connections while online. TDSY is led by a core group of interns who vision, plan, and implement these unique and creative programs.

Our interns are mentored by Temple clergy and staff to connect their specific jobs to the wider Temple community.

TDSY interns create events that are welcoming, fun and fast paced. The events are meaningful and thoughtful towards understanding the value of connections. These events give our teens the opportunity to reflect about themselves, their friendships, and think about who they want to be. TDSY programs are open to all 9th-12th graders who are members of our congregation.

Our TDSY events always have a Jewish connection- whether they begin with Shabbat blessings or end with Havdalah, our teens are always aware of what connects them at the core.

Most recently TDSY participated in a scavenger hunt using an online platform called Goosechase. The group was broken up into teams of 4 and put into breakout rooms. The app sends them different tasks they have to complete and compete against each other to win the scavenger hunt.

In addition, a few of our interns recently planned and ran a middle school event bringing together 6th-8th graders who love to play the new “it” game Among Us. Connecting to something kids already enjoy doing and bringing them together as a community is a great way to bring them into Temple programming.

Many of our 9th-12th graders also participate in TDSY Tuesday, our weekly learning opportunity. Teens get to talk about what’s happening in their lives. Everyone is involved. Everyone gets a voice. Recent topics taught by our clergy include gender in Judaism and other religions.

Our Madrichim (9th-12th grade teen teaching assistants) take on real responsibility within our religion school program. They lead community building games, breakout rooms, Hebrew tutoring, and even step in to teach pieces of the lesson. They are a major asset to our program creating a bridge between teachers and students.

Emily Aileen Azose Elie Emily Aileen Azose will be called to the Torah on February 6, 2021.

Emily is the daughter of Michael and Erin Azose, and the sister of Rachel. She is the granddaughter of David and Terry Azose and Bill and Pat Weber. Emily is a 7th grader at Islander Middle School.

She enjoys traveling, drawing, skiing, doing puzzles, and all things Disney. For her Mitzvah Project she is making supplies for the Humane Society. Emily is grateful to have you celebrate with her on her special day.

Charlie Crevin Charlie is the son of Matt Crevin and Sari Davidson. Charlie is the brother of Jake Crevin and grandson of Larry and Nancy Crevin and Carl and Donna Davidson. Charlie is in the 7th Grade at Issaquah Middle School. He enjoys studying the weather, being with his dog Chudley, spending time with friends and family. For his mitzvah project, Charlie is helping feed the homeless in the greater Seattle area. Charlie is grateful to have you celebrate with him on his special day.

Supporting our Temple Family

by Laurie Warshal Cohen In a recent Zoom call with Sacred Journeys volunteers, we discussed how emotionally challenging it has been for families who have lost loved ones during this Covid time.

We decided, to follow-up with Temple families who had lost a loved one since March 2020.

We have made 74 calls to members of our congregation who had lost a loved one since March 12, Sacred Journey volunteers made the calls, with the support of Jennifer Philips, our Temple liaison, and a few other volunteers who helped organize the calls.

Unlike pre-Covid calls when so many of our calls were messages, our volunteers spoke to spouses, sons and daughters, and grandchildren. We heard how difficult it has been to mourn a family loss without the community closure of a family gathering. We heard how Zoom calls, phone calls, and even backyard spaced visits were a weak substitute for sharing with friends who could hug you to share your grief.

"You know, the overwhelming comment from folks I spoke to,” said one volunteer, “was that they felt Temple recognized their loss. One person said that while she gets text messages and emails, she appreciated the personal phone call more and felt the offer of our sympathies.”

Another caller contacted a daughter who only recently reported the death of both of her parents. She so appreciated being able to chat with a volunteer who related to her feelings of loss.

Our volunteers were able to help one congregant purchase prayer books and another needed assistance in putting together a Zoom minyan. We thank Jennifer Phillips for always being able to provide information needed.

While these 74 calls were being made for recent deaths, Sacred Journeys continued with current condolence calls, as well as 46 one-year yarhzeit reminder calls. The most basic math tells the story of about 140 calls.

He co-authored Shalom Friend, a biography of Yitzhak Rabin and winner of the National Jewish Book Award.

Gorenberg has been a visiting professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and will return to teach there in 2021. As a commentator on Middle East affairs and on religion, he has appeared on Sixty Minutes, Nightline, Dateline, Fresh Air and on CNN and BBC. He is a senior correspondent for The American Prospect, and has written for The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Review of Books, Foreign Policy, Prospect Magazine (UK), The National (Abu Dhabi) and in Hebrew for Ha’aretz.
