LEADERSHIP

Greetings from Our Executive Director By Lisa D. Horowitz LISA D. H O R OWIT Z E XECUT IV E D IR ECTOR

Dear Friends, As we enter a season of darkness, we appreciate the light all the more- whether kindling Chanukah candles with our friends and family, or simply experiencing the warm glow of friendship and fellowship. Perhaps seeking light within the darkness is a good metaphor for what we feel as we emerge from a long time apart to being together in person once more. We have been delighted to be offering Bridge Family Religion School in person, and with some events like outdoors Endless Opportunities, and Friday night services. At the same time, we are grateful for the opportunities for hybrid and online gatherings, and for Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool, which has been in person for more than 15 months. We look forward to welcoming you back to your Temple home in the coming weeks and months, as we gather in person to worship, learn, and just be together.

I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge some major points of light whom I am privileged to call my colleagues. Clergy, educators, and administrative staff have all worked together - while largely physically apart - to continue to serve Temple and our community. I offer them a huge “todah rabah/ thank you” for their great work and uplifting spirits. Warmest wishes for a joyous Chanukah for you and your family. Lisa

LEADERSHIP

Letter from our Board President By Aaron Alhadeff A AR O N AL HADE F F T DH S BOAR D PR E S I DE N T

Dear Friends, As President of Temple’s Board of Trustees, it is my honor and pleasure to write to you about the many great things that are happening at Temple today – many bright lights as we enter the darkness of winter months. It’s thrilling to see plans emerge every week for new programs and events where we can come together in person as well as in “hybrid” settings where some can tune in virtually and those who feel comfortable can come in person. You can look forward this spring to: • Martin Luther King weekend with Pastor Carey Anderson and our friends and neighbors at F.A.M.E. (Friday, January 14 and Sunday, January 16) • The Keller Family Lecture with author Bari Weiss (April 26, 2022) • The Clergy Institute and inaugural Bernbaum Family Lecture series (dates to be determined) • The best Purim ever! (March 13, 2022) Our clergy and staff have worked creatively and with great resilience over the past 20 months to keep connections and communications going, and to serve our congregation, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. I’d like to tell you about some of our staff and our programs that I’m especially proud of. I wish I could highlight all of our wonderful staff and exciting programs, but there is simply not enough space. Stacey Delcau, our Director of Education, didn’t miss a beat in March 2020 when she learned 40 minutes before Hebrew school was to begin that we needed to cancel that afternoon’s classes. By the time parents returned home, she had classes

up and running again remotely! Our wonderful Bridge Family Religion School teachers learned and adapted to meet the needs of their students. They worked especially hard during the pandemic to keep students engaged and learning. Now that we are back in person for Religion School, there are myriad details to attend to, and Stacey and her colleagues are on top of each and every one. Kol ha kavod to our entire education team! Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool was closed for only six weeks before coming back to allow parents to get back to work. Leah Levy, Preschool Director, and Leisha Piha, Assistant Director, and their team of teachers have created a program that is fun, enriching, and safe for our kids and staff. We are so grateful to our preschool teachers for nurturing those friendships over many months. Jessie Cunningham, Associate Executive Director, and her facilities leadership behind the scenes have ensured that everything is in place for our events and programs. COVID has placed special burdens on the Facilities Team, and we are grateful for all they have done to keep us safe and keep our buildings humming. Rabbi Kate Speizer, Director of Adult Programming & Engagement, has worked with the Endless Opportunities leadership group to create great online programming all throughout the pandemic. Introduction to Judaism and other classes are also going strong – some in person and some virtual. Friday night services are back in person, and we have added some Saturday mornings to our in-person worship experiences. Our choir is back after a nearly 2-year hiatus, complete with “singing masks,” physical distancing, and PCR tests to keep everyone as safe as possible. It is an exciting time to be leading Temple as we come back together, safely and thoughtfully, after far too long a time part. As always, I welcome your thoughts and observations; please feel free to reach out at aalhadeff@elttaes.com. Aaron

LEADERSHIP

Rabbi’s Corner: By Rabbi C.B. Souther C . B . S O U T HE R AS S OC I AT E R AB BI

The darkness of our northern winter days is the price that we pay for the gloriousness of the Pacific Northwest summer. The clocks fall back and suddenly we’re immersed in darkness before the workday is even done. I vividly remember preparing to become Bat Mitzvah, looking out the windows of my Hebrew school classroom at the already-black sky at 4:30pm, marveling at how quickly the long sunny days of September had departed and knowing that it would feel like an eternity until spring appeared. These dark days play host to some of the most magical and wondrous energies of the year. It is a human instinct to increase light during these days, and the bounty of winter holidays point to just that need. Beginning on the 25th of Kislev, as the light of the waning crescent moon diminishes, Chanukah invites us to increase the light we bring into the world at the start of this dark season. The new moon of the Hebrew month Tevet, among the darkest nights of the year, arrives on the final two nights of Chanukah, when the flames of our hannukiyot burn the brightest. It is striking that these holidays cluster around the beginning of the winter season. The nights are at their longest, and the darkness at its thickest, but it is only the beginning of the long journey back around towards the sun. These

lights of Chanukah need to last far beyond the miraculous eight days; they must sustain us through the months that follow. Chanukah means “dedication,” derived from the original purpose of the first Chanukah, when the Maccabees re-dedicated the Temple in Jerusalem. Chanukah asks us, “to what are we dedicated?” This winter let’s reflect upon the intentions we set for ourselves at Rosh Hashana, only months ago when the sun was still high in the sky. What hopes did we lay out for ourselves in the bright light of the new year? What seeds did we plant, and how, now, in the months of darkness, can we offer them nourishment, supporting their subterranean growth as we move slowly towards the light? Our Festival of Lights is but a portal into this winter season, a doorway set ablaze with the lights of hope and dedication. May the hard work of keeping those fires burning, come what may, be inspired by those little lights, growing in intensity and purpose each of the eight nights. This winter, may we dedicate ourselves to being a light, to nurture our own hopes, and encourage the growth of all those in our orbit.

CELEBRATING TEMPLE STAFF

Thank You Dan Eklund for 41 Great Years! Dan Eklund After 41 years as Temple’s cemetery caretaker, Dan Eklund retired from Temple at the end of November. Dan began working at Temple's Hills of Eternity Cemetery and Mausoleum in 1980, and became head cemetery caretaker in 1982. For over four decades, he has kept the grass trimmed and weeded, the graves maintained, and the flowers tended and fresh. Dan has ensured that Hills of Eternity has been a safe and comforting space for our members and families to place their loved ones to rest with dignity. It's not everyday you can congratulate someone on 41 years of service. We are eternally grateful for Dan's steadfast dedication to Temple and our families. We will miss him and wish him the best in his retirement!

CELEBRATING TEMPLE STAFF

Spotlight on our staff

Get to know the team from behind the scenes!

Jessie Cunningham, Associate Executive Director. As the Associate Executive Director, I manage Temple facilities, facilities staff, security, and Human Resources. There is a lot of variety in the work! Our facilities include both the Seattle and Bellevue campuses as well as Hills of Eternity cemetery. I enjoy working across departments to make sure services and programs are the best they can be. In my free time I enjoy reading mysteries and spending time with my 12-year-old son Lennon (we've been watching Stranger Things lately).

Tim Heimerle, Development Database Manager. Hi! My name is Tim Heimerle and I’m the Development Database Manager at Temple. So, what does that mean? If you’ve made a donation, received a yahrzeit notification or tribute card, or needed help logging into your Temple account, you’ve experienced just some of what I do. However, much of my work for Temple is “behind the scenes” as I help maintain our donor and member records, assist staff members with projects and provide reports for Temple leadership, just to name a few. And I work closely with our development and marketing staff as we prepare Temple-wide communications and fundraising campaigns. I have a degree in music education and grew up in the Chicago suburbs, before spending nearly 20 years in New York City and then relocating to the lovely PNW where I now live with my husband Rick and our two cats Canyon and Mountain.

DEVELOPMENT

Because We're Family By Barb Maduell, Senior Director of Development

In-person? Hybrid? Online? Do-ityourself at home holiday kits? As the way we interact as a Temple family reflects the changes in the world around us, there remains one constant: each year all members are called upon to care for each other. Whether it’s through membership dues, a gift to the Annual (formerly High Holy Days) Campaign, a tribute to thank, recognize, or remember a milestone, or a legacy gift to ensure our congregation’s future, your philanthropic commitment to Temple is a sacred act. Your generosity makes it possible to welcome anyone who wants to make Temple their spiritual family, regardless of financial circumstances. For our littlest members to form lifelong friendships, and for our oldest

members to find comfort in them. For B’nai Mitzvah to stand on the bimah with their families and our Rabbis and take their place in the chain of Jewish tradition. For teens to ask big questions that will shape their identities. For our community to feel safe, through heightened wellness protocols and security measures. And for our broken world to be healed. This year’s sacred acts of generosity are inspiring. In times when many congregants still are experiencing the economic impacts of the pandemic, our Temple community has dug deep. Each person’s reasons vary, but one thing is certain: we take care of each other, because we’re family.

L'dor VaDor Society Everyone at any age can make a legacy gift to Temple! When you make a legacy gift - one that Temple will receive in the future – you confirm your place in Temple’s 123-year-old history and ensure that Temple’s deep history of tradition and innovation will continue to shape future generations. The simplest way to make a gift is by including Temple in your will, or by designating Temple as a beneficiary of an IRA or life insurance policy. If you’ve made a legacy gift or would be interested in having a conversation, please let Rabbi Weiner or Lisa Horowitz know. No matter the size of their gift, each L’Dor VaDor Society member is making a statement about their Jewish values and commitment to Temple by including their name. We ask for no details. 16

Thanks!

For gifts received July 1 to November 15, 2021

During this season of giving, our congregation expressed their commitment to Temple with extraordinary generosity. While the Annual Campaign continued as a focus, many members chose other ways to make Temple a philanthropic priority: voluntarily increasing their yearly dues, or making gifts to areas of specific interest. We are grateful for all these acts of tzedakah; they ensure the continued strength of our community.
