Dear Friends, Joy and gratitude. These are the first words that come to mind when I think about High Holy Day services at Temple – this year more than ever. The High Holy Days offer us the opportunity to gather in community to contemplate, celebrate, and connect. Gathering for the first time in two years will bring a special joy and gratitude that we have arrived at this day. This year we celebrate the simple fact of being together in person! You have, by now, received information about the changes necessary to return to in-person High Holy Day services. Behind the scenes, our clergy and staff have been busy preparing for every aspect of our return together – planning, polishing, and taking care of myriad details to make things run as smoothly as possible.

I am deeply grateful to the colleagues who have worked so hard for months to make our return to be together meaningful, safe, and joyous. And we are all profoundly grateful for your support, which makes all this possible. Warmest wishes for a sweet New Year, Lisa

Letter from our Board President By Aaron Alhadeff A AR O N AL HADE F F T DH S BOAR D PR E S I DE N T

Friends, It is truly an honor to have taken on the role of Temple’s Board president. Having grown up at Temple, married my wife Emily here, and now raising our sons Max and Charlie here, I deeply value Temple’s role in each of our lives. As an active member of Seattle’s Jewish community, I also have a profound appreciation for our role in the broader community. I also have a great appreciation, literally and figuratively, for my predecessor in this position, Don Loeb, who has left such a strong foundation for us to build on. Don, thank you for your tremendous service! My focus is always on relationships and not on transactions. The relationships we have with each other, with our wonderful clergy, and with our dedicated staff are the key to Temple’s success, both today and into the future. Also critical to Temple’s mission are the many partnerships we have with Jewish and non-Jewish organizations. These relationships maximize Temple’s impact in our community. I am always open to hearing from you. Our Board represents the approximately 5,000 individuals who call Temple De Hirsch Sinai “my Temple.” I take that obligation very seriously, as I know my Board colleagues do. We will be reaching out throughout the year, both formally and informally, to learn what your hopes and dreams are for Temple’s future and how we can work together to achieve those dreams. We hope that you will be receptive to our invitations to dialogue; only through these conversations can I,

and our board, ensure that we are being responsive to our community. Other focal points for our work as a Board serving our congregation in the coming year will be navigating coming out of COVID and rebuilding our in-person community, while also recognizing and adopting the “COVID keepers,” those practices that we adopted during the pandemic that will be appropriate to continue. I am thrilled that we have resumed in-person services, to know that our children will be back at Bridge Family Religion School in person in the fall, and that we will be in-person for High Holy Days, when I will be able to address our congregation at services. So please don’t forget that Erev Rosh Hashanah is the Monday of Labor Day weekend! I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone who kept our community together over the past year: • Our Board and committee members, who attended countless Zoom meetings • Our clergy, who created a sense of community and intimacy through Zoom services, who comforted the many among our congregation who were bereaved or despondent over the past year, and who helped bring joy to those celebrating happy occasions such as b’nai mitzvah and weddings • Our educators at both Bridge Family Religion School and Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool, whose resiliency and creativity were great role models for our children • Last, but far from least, our administrative staff, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the magic happen This has been a tough year and a whole village has been working hard on the bimah, in the classroom, and behind the scenes: thank you all. I thank all of you for the honor and trust of serving as the President of the Board of Trustees for the next two years. Aaron

Rabbi’s Corner: Back in Blessing By Rabbi Daniel A. Weiner DA N I E L A. W E I NER S EN I OR R ABBI

I usually tune out from the few commercials I’m forced to endure on the little broadcast television I still watch, but this one cut through the filters that sustain my sanity in these stimuli-saturated times. Accompanying the images of unmasked families enjoying unhealthy chain-dining cuisine was a meta-melody—one that elicited the very nostalgia that was its subject. It was John Sebastian’s twangy, folky ode to yesteryear, “Welcome Back,” serenading an on-thenose celebration of our post-pandemic longing to get out and feel normal again, fortified by a blooming onion and stuffed potato skins. But cleverly, it was also a trigger for Boomer nostalgia for the 1970s, when it served as the theme song for the classic sitcom “Welcome Back Kotter,” a Proustian madeleine projecting many of us back to the era of big cars, little gas, disco suits, and the other kitschy artifacts of our halcyon days. Though I won’t link a similar hot hit of the 70’s to our return to Temple, I feel I need to qualify my impulse to “welcome all of us back” in that we never really left. Though cyber-shul was less than ideal, we celebrate our success in moving much of our communal life online, offering ease of use to greater numbers than in the pre-pandemic world of physical space. But there is an undeniable sense that we are

returning to home from someplace else—joining together again in ways that are deeper and more enduring than what Zoom and best intentions could offer. To welcome back blends memory with imagination, a reclamation of the past towards a re-embrace of the future. And our tradition adds an additional layer of meaning and purpose to this concept, for welcoming is more than a gracious gesture of return. We say: Bruchim Ha-baim—Blessed are those who come. To offer a blessing is more an aspiration than an imperative, more a hopeful plea to God than an invoking of divine power. It amplifies the gesture of welcome beyond politeness and etiquette to encompass gratitude for reunion and reconnection. Such a blessed welcoming reveals an awareness of the tenuousness of life, the uncertainty that is inherent in our being. And it is an affirmation of the fortune, fate, or Force that has enabled us to come together again as a Temple family—hopefully a bit wiser, more road-tested, and more resilient for the trials of our absence. And so, in welcoming all of us back to Temple with the blessing of Bruchim HaBaim, we celebrate what is renewed, offer thanks for the ties that bound us while we were apart, and pray that we are strengthened by the challenges that have forged us as we, once again, walk our shared path toward the promise that lies ahead.

FAM ILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN

Families with Young Children By Rabbi C.B. Souther (formerly Schulman), Associate Rabbi

When the pandemic began, Temple quickly pivoted to provide online programming for the entire community. During these many months we have learned a lot about how to engage online with our youngest congregants. Our tried-and-true Friday night Shabbat Junior shifted from an in-person dinner and service, open to the community, to a 30-minute online singalong. Families and kiddos could see one another and sing along with Chava and Rabbi Schulman. Parents set screens up on dinner tables, in living rooms, in the kitchen while they cooked, and kiddos were able to get some shpilkes out before bedtime. We have continued our partnership with PJ Library and the Jewish Federation of Seattle on Bim Bam Baby Havdallah. This is another opportunity to sing shabbat songs and hear a story while children and parents get to

check in and connect with each other. It is a community-wide event that draws a wide range of participants. Finally, we have a full year of Do-It-Yourself Jewish ritual guidance with The Art of Shabbat Curriculum, a video-based introduction to all of the rituals of Shabbat, from beginning preparations for the day through Saturday night and setting intentions for the week to come. Before we jump into a new school year, we have some important students to honor! On July 31, the Leopards (Pre-K) will celebrate their time at JRM with the annual Shalom Service. Morah Laurel and Morah Aliya are helping students prepare for this special milestone. Though we are celebrating as a community on Zoom, the Leopards and their parents will gather in person for a private Tot Shabbat with Rabbi Weiner in August. We are so proud of the Leopards Class of 2021 and are looking forward to welcoming many of them to the Bridge Family Religion School in the fall! It is a long-standing tradition for Leopard families to give a class gift. Parents partner with the teachers to come up with something meaningful that represents the students and is meaningful to the school. It is not often to come up with that perfect gift - something that is practical and sentimental. This year’s Leopards class really hit the spot by purchasing something for the playground that is not only useful but brings Jewish values to life. It’s called a Buddy Bench. The idea is simple - if a child feels lonely, they can go to the bench as a signal that they need someone to play

BRIDGE FAMILY RELIGION SCHOOL

Bridge Family Religion School By Stacey Delcau, RJE

Connection. Community. Belonging. The moment every child steps into our building they automatically have something in common: being Jewish. The next step is our responsibility. Our job is to make sure they find additional things in common; whether it is an interest in sports, acting, music, video games, or favorite foods. Community building focused on facilitating these relationships is at the top of our priority list. We are so excited to have everyone back in person in our buildings for this coming school year. We are most excited about our 8th grade and high school programming. We are piloting a new program in 8th grade called JCAT- the Jewish Court of All Time sponsored by the Jewish Theological Seminary and the University of Michigan. Students assume roles of historical and contemporary figures, delve into a court case based in Jewish history, explore its current impact, and debate issues in the voices of these characters.

Our teachers are the cornerstone of our program and the stronger their knowledge in areas such as Judaic studies, Hebrew, and classroom skills the stronger our program. TEENS & YOUTH GROUP S

Teens & Youth Groups By Jessie Stott, Teen Engagement & Sixth Grade Coordinator

At Temple we have many opportunities for teens to get involved. Some programs are led by Temple staff, and some are led by the teens themselves. We believe offering these programs is important in fostering strong relationships between Jewish teens, keeping students engaged and connected to their Jewish community, and building a safe space for genuine conversations and strengthening Jewish identity. Our teens can choose from a multitude of programs like our Hadracha (teaching assistant) program where students become leaders and role models in the classroom, TDSY (Temple De Hirsch Sinai Youth) events where teens create connections to each other and their identity, the TDSY Leadership Team where teens gain leadership skills, and the weekly TDSY Tuesday classes with the Rabbis where teens can ask big questions and dig deeper into more mature topics. We are so excited to be able to offer trips again this year! Our 8-9th graders will be going to L.A. over MLK weekend, our 9th-10th graders will be going to Alabama and Georgia with Etgar 36, and our 11-12th graders will be going to New York City over Spring Break. THE JUSTICE LEAGUE & THE TRIBE

The Justice League & The Tribe By Rabbi Avi Fine, Assistant Rabbi

Join the Justice League, Temple’s Tikkun Olam group, as we engage in Tikkun Olam within the community. This year, the Justice League will be focusing our efforts in a few key areas. Racial Justice: Our racial justice work is both internal and external. We will be working toward equity and inclusion in our spaces and supporting racial justice legislation. Voter Rights: We will fight for the essential democratic rights and responsibilities of each person to vote through advocating for policy and engaging voters. Poverty - Homelessness, Housing, and Food Insecurity: Through collecting food and engaging in community campaigns we will work to combat issues around poverty in our city. The Environment: We will continue the work of Shomrei Adamah, Guardians in greening Temple spaces by maintaining parks and working toward sound environmental policy.

Are you in your 20s or 30s and want to be in community with others? Be a part of the Tribe! At the beginning of August, we will come together in person for a day of kayaking, then at the end of the month, we will meet up for a BBQ to celebrate 4th Shabbat. We will also kick off the Jewish New Year with Refresh on September 7. We look forward to gathering in person and bringing in the new year with time to reflect and sing. The Tribe (Social) Justice League is a home for young Jews in the Seattle area who seek to ask questions and deeply engage in dialogue around systemic injustices. In the spirit of tikkun olam, we provide opportunities for education, action, and joyful connection in the hopes of transforming ourselves, our community, and the world. Introducing the L’Dor VaDor Society: a promise to Future Generations When you make a legacy gift – one that Temple will receive in the future – you confirm your place in Temple’s 123-year-old history and ensure that our community remains vibrant for generations to come. What will your legacy be? Two couples share their stories. Stephanie Carmel and David Oder We joined Temple in 2002, when our kids were three and five years old. We were looking for a Jewish community, liked the Rabbis, and took a “leap of faith” as we knew no one at TDHS and had no family in Seattle. Almost two decades later, some of our fondest memories are of Sunday School mornings, sitting in the Seattle Chapel during the service, and hearing all of the kids singing prayers in Hebrew by heart. We decided to make a legacy gift as our way of making an investment in the future of Reform Judaism in Seattle. As a first-generation family, we have been so impressed with the way Temple leads in the Seattle community and we are honored to be a part of it. What do we imagine Temple will be like in 2050? We hope that future generations are enjoying time with their families at Temple, people are making lifelong friends just as we have, and the sun is still shining through the Moses window during Friday night services in the summer.

Emily and Aaron Alhadeff Both of us grew up at Temple – literally – with Aaron first attending services in a baby carriage and Emily listening to her dad blow the shofar for decades. While we first met at the JCC preschool and attended JDS together, going to Sunday School each week was a huge factor in our maintaining a constant friendship. It’s always been our second home. As adults and parents, we’ve watched our Temple experience go full circle. Our sons are surrounded by extended family in the same seats where our parents and grandparents sat, and are repeating many of our best childhood memories, while also creating their own. While our roots run deep, it’s Temple’s leadership role in the Jewish and greater community that inspires us to invest in Temple today, and to have made a legacy gift, for the future. We not only hope that our kids and their kids have the same feelings of belonging and safety as we’ve had; we want that sense of home and tradition for everyone – including those who didn’t grow up here. How do we imagine Temple in 2050? Temple isn’t a place; it’s a way of being. We see our strong congregation standing for the same core values it does today - progressive, open, accepting, innovative, and dynamic. TEMPLE TIDINGS | SUMMER 2021

B’NAI MITZVAH CANDIDATES

Mazal Tov! LEVI SOLOMON Levi will become a bar mitzvah on August 7, 2021. Levi is the son of Lance & Jeannie Solomon and brother of Ayla. He is the grandson of Anna & Hugh (z”l) Teweles, Doris & Allen Mannies, Bert & Sandy Shaw, and Bart Solomon (z”l) & Sharon Rogow. Levi will be an 8th grader at Hamilton International Middle School. He loves all sports and plays on both select baseball and soccer teams. He also enjoys going to school and learning, playing the drums, swimming in Seattle’s lakes, biking, skiing, and spending time with his friends, family, and, Blossom, his dog. For his mitzvah project, Levi will volunteer at the Ballard Food Bank.

LILAH KENNEDY EZRA SPITZER Ezra will become a bar mitzvah on August 7, 2021. Ezra is the son of Gabriel Spitzer & Ashley Gross and brother of Oliver. He is the grandson of John & Cheryl Spitzer and Michael & Andrea Gross. Ezra is entering 8th grade at Madison Middle School in West Seattle. He enjoys playing video games, reading, indoor bouldering, bike riding, and spending time with friends. For his mitzvah project, Ezra raised money for childhood cancer research through lemonade stands, benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Lilah will become a bat mitzvah on August 14, 2021. Lilah is the daughter of Ilana & Jon Kennedy and the sister of Erez. She is the granddaughter of Geri & Ray Dubé, Gary & Karen Cone, and Dana & Tom Kennedy. Lilah will be an 8th grader at Madison Middle School. Her favorite activities are horseback riding and biking with friends. For her mitzvah project, Lilah will be collecting and contributing needed items to SAFE, a local horse rescue.

EVIE SCHWARTZ Evie will become a bat mitzvah on August 14, 2021. Evie is the daughter of Pamela and Seth Schwartz and sister of Kirin. She is the granddaughter of Alan & Ilsa Schwartz and Penny & Jack Frick. Evie will be an 8th grader at Washington Middle School. She enjoys cuddling kittens, swimming, reading, and hanging out with her friends. For her mitzvah project, Evie fundraised over $3000 for the Seattle Humane Society.

He plays soccer for PacNW and loves the Sounders and reading. For his Mitzvah Project, Tyler is volunteering with Purrfect Pals, a non-profit agency to adopt kittens.

He is the grandson to Diane & Dennis Warshal, Janet Abrams & Steve Pruzan, and Marleen & Kenny Alhadeff. Charlie will be a 7th grader at The Bush School. He enjoys playing soccer, watching football, hanging out with friends, watching YouTube, and playing video games. For his mitzvah project, Charlie is working with Jewish Family Service to provide sports equipment to resettled refugee families.

ZACHARY LEWIS Zachary will become a bar mitzvah on September 4, 2021. Zachary is the son of Marcie & Andrew Lewis and the brother of Jadyn. He is the grandson of Jan & Steven Lewis and Roberta & Jeff Miller. Zachary will be a 7th grader at Cougar Mountain Middle School. He enjoys lacrosse, football, video games, traveling, and hanging out with friends. For his mitzvah project, Zachary made blessing bags, kept them in the car, and handed them out as needed.

She is the granddaughter of Rabbi Jay & Elise Miller and Gregory & Eugenya Zinger. Rina will be an 8th grader at The Jewish Day School. She enjoys drawing, baking, spending time with friends and family, and her cat Minou. She is a swimmer on the Seattle Synchro Team. For her mitzvah project, Rina is creating stickers and greeting cards for kids at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

ROBBIE MORRIS SYDNEY PARCEL Sydney will become a bat mitzvah on September 11, 2021. Sydney is the daughter of Carin & Andrew Parcel and sister of Liam and Dylan. She is the granddaughter of Zoë & Carl Riekes, Judy Carroll, and Randy Parcel. Sydney will be an 8th grader at Islander Middle School. She enjoys volleyball, tennis, photography, and reading. For his mitzvah project, Robbie is training to help raise dogs with Guide Dogs for the Blind.

EMMA SIDELL Emma will become a bat mitzvah on September 18, 2021. Emma is the daughter of Beth & Mike Sidell and the sister of Nate. She is the granddaughter of Elaine & Michael Weinstein and Karen & Bruce Sidell. Emma will be a 7th grader at Cougar Mountain Middle School. She enjoys art, dancing, baking, and roller skating. For her mitzvah project, Emma is volunteering with her grandmother who manages the Herzl Memorial Park Cemetery.

SIENA ROUSSO Siena will become a bat mitzvah on September 25, 2021. Siena is the daughter of Leslie & Marc Rousso and the sister of Lee. She is the granddaughter of Cecille Shtabsky and Denise Rousso. Siena will be an 8th grader at Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences. She enjoys baking and playing volleyball. For her mitzvah project, Siena is raising money for families who can’t afford a scoliosis brace.

DYLAN FINKELMAN Dylan will become a bar mitzvah on October 2, 2021. Dylan is the son of Carly Kaufman & Peter Finkelman and brother of Henry. He is the grandson of Jeanie Alhadeff, Lois & Ross Finkelman, Harry Caraco, Molly Bennett-Kaufman & Mark Kaufman (z”l). Dylan will be a 7th grader at The Bush School. He enjoys tennis, skiing, mountain biking, playing bass guitar, ultimate frisbee, and soccer. For his mitzvah project, Dylan will be harvesting produce for FareStart.

SETH GREENLICK-SEXTON Seth will become a bar mitzvah on September 25, 2021. Seth is the son of Shana Greenlick & Scott Sexton and brother of Sadie. He is the grandson of Bobbie & Cliff Greenlick and Karen & Jim Sexton. Seth will be a 7th grader at McKnight Middle School. He excels at playing computer games with his friends, knowing interesting random facts, engaging with his teachers, and loving his parents and sister. For his mitzvah project, Seth and his father cleaned up local lakes, rivers, and ponds of debris and litter that could be harmful to the environment.

DAVID HOUGHTON David will become a bar mitzvah on October 2, 2021. David is the son of Debbie Shapiro & Simon Houghton and brother to Jacob & Shoshana Glickman and Baxter Houghton. He is the grandson of Sanford & Michaele Shapiro. David will be a freshman at the Science and Math Institute in Tacoma. He enjoys playing a wide variety of sports, including basketball and baseball, and he has thrown shot put for his track team. David also likes reading Manga and his favorite time is when he is away at Camp Kalsman with his Jewish friends. For his mitzvah project, David is working towards developing a trash cleanup at local beaches and in the alleys around Tacoma.

When he is not watching sports on TV, Joseph spends his time playing Xbox, screenwriting, and cuddling with his dog, Lily. For his mitzvah project, Joseph is organizing a food and supplies drive to support local homeless shelters.

She is the granddaughter of Owen (z”l) & Ann Singer, and Dennis & Diane Warshal. Miriam will be a 7th grader at Mercer International Middle School. She enjoys soccer, gymnastics, and baking. For her mitzvah project, Miriam will be volunteering with JFS doing home deliveries for their food bank.

This support includes an immediate condolence call on behalf of the congregation, a soup brigade that prepares and delivers soup to families in need, and volunteers who meet families at services when they say Kaddish, and offer general support. Sacred Journeys volunteers also reach out at the time of the first yahrzeit with a traditional yahrzeit candle. Sacred Journeys is supported by the William and Edith Warshal Fund for Sacred Journeys and your generous donations.
