SUMMER 2022
COST OF LIVING CRISIS The cost of living crisis deepens by the day. Inflation in May was 7.8%. The highest increase in 38 years. Everything is up. Heating oil by 101%, electricity by 41%, rents by 11% and basic food stuffs like bread, milk and butter by 10%. Recent figures show that in the year to the end of March hourly wages rose by 1.9%. Inflation was 6.9%. Therefore real wages are being cut on a massive scale not seen since the financial crash. Up to March a worker on average full time wages was down €2500 in spending power but it’s now estimated that you could be out of pocket by €3500 a year as prices keep going up. Nearly a third of household are now in fuel poverty. Meanwhile, Oxfam have shown five of the best-known Irish energy companies had combined yearly profits rise of €280 million. Five of the biggest Irish food companies have had a total profit rise of €174 million in just one year. Also the wealth of Ireland’s 9 billionaires has increased a massive €15.55 billion since We the want start of build a strongerbyvoice for workers across Ireland. to
