Preface
Co-Creating Future Learning Environments
Since the Ministry of Education launched the 5-Year (Medium-to-Long Term) Plan for Aesthetic Education Program in 2014, efforts have steadily deepened across curriculum and activities, teacher development, and campus environments. Entering its third phase in 2024, the program continues to uphold its core principles while mobilizing cross-sector resources to advance the widespread and sustainable development of aesthetic education. Among the key initiatives is the Design Movement on Campus (DMOC), implemented by the Taiwan Design Research Institute since 2019. By introducing design thinking into schools, the program has moved beyond physical upgrades to foster collaboration between educators and designers, creating diverse and innovative learning environments. To date, DMOC has reached more than one hundred schools across Taiwan and its outlying islands. Projects include indoor and outdoor spaces for innovative teaching, counseling and special education environments that support holistic development, and learning settings that integrate local culture—together reflecting the diversity and future direction of educational practice. A campus is more than a place for learning; it is an environment that inspires creativity, nurtures emotional expression, and strengthens social connections. In recent years, teacher development, parent-teacher

engagement, and social-emotional learning have been increasingly integrated into campus design, enabling pedagogy and learning environments to evolve together. At the heart of every campus space lies its educational purpose. With the implementation of the Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education, competency-based approaches have deepened, expanding the possibilities of classroom design and learning. Drawing on years of transformation in learning environments, this book presents selected innovative design cases to inspire readers. Grounded in school-based practices and observations, these examples demonstrate how future learning environments can respond to contemporary challenges. As education and design converge, aesthetics extends beyond visual experience to become a life-enriching force. We hope this book serves as a record of this ongoing endeavor, allowing thoughtful environments and meaningful ideas to continue to flourish in both campuses and everyday life.

Editor’s Preface
Acts in Motion: A Living Aesthetics of Taiwan’s Campuses
Since the implementation of the Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education, schools across Taiwan have sought to innovate in teaching and learning, yet many remain constrained by traditional classroom settings. Launched in the same year, the Design Movement on Campus (DMOC) Program set out to open fresh possibilities for campus transformation. Through a collaborative framework spanning school selection, design-school matchmaking, and project delivery, the program broadens how aesthetic learning environments are imagined and practiced. Public renovation efforts have long remained at surface beautification or repair. Many challenges in schools have been met with reductive, minimal interventions that offer temporary relief. Aesthetics, however, is not simply a matter of visual or sensory appeal; it calls for design practices rooted in the core purposes of education. Over time, DMOC took shape as an action platform that integrates educational innovation with open, participatory design. Its ultimate aim is to foster the shared growth of people and their environments. By its fifth year, a new challenge surfaced: campus transformations were beginning to look increasingly similar. To move forward, DMOC shifted its course in two strategic directions. First, it infused educational innovation into a design-led approach. Through co-creation with educators, this shift gave rise to learning environments that respond to contemporary
The Trees and the Forest Beyond: Design Movement on Campuses
needs and diverse imaginations, such as the SEL Theater at Kaohsiung Municipal Fongshan Junior High School and the sugarcane seedlings colearning project at Changhua County Guangxing Elementary School. Second, it expanded the scale of intervention, reframing the campus as an environmental system for learning — as seen in the open learning environment at Nantou County Chungfeng Elementary School and the regenerated teaprocessing factory at National Kuanhsi Senior High School, where learning is woven into local culture. Through these experiences, a user-centered approach has guided new modes of action. Educators and designers gradually came to share a common understanding: campus transformation must include students’ voices and experiences. Participatory design invites children to join as partners in co-creation, becoming agents in the evolution of both education and space. DMOC is not a fixed framework but an ongoing journey — clarified through dialogue, challenged through practice, and envisioned through collaboration. The insights traced along this path come together throughout the pages of this book.

Mindstorm Lab×A New Take on the Outdoor Education Base Located in Gukeng, Yunlin County, Huanan Experimental Elementary School successfully revitalized itself through innovative teaching practices. Facing limited classroom space and evolving educational approaches, the school redesigned its classrooms to support flexible, project-based learning (PBL). The redesigned modular classrooms feature movable whiteboards, storage-integrated desks, and portable chalkboards. Additionally, the “Four-Season Hill” window bench links indoor learning spaces with outdoor environments, encouraging students to engage deeply with nature and peers. Aligned with the school’s “Five Senses, Four Seasons” curriculum, the spaces emphasize immersive outdoor experiences and real-world learning, developing students’ communication, creativity, and reflective abilities.
Challenges 1. Traditional classrooms are difficult to support contemporary, diverse, and student-centered teaching methods. 2. The classroom lacks the space qualities and learning environment needed to embody the spirit of outdoor education.
Design Strategies 1. Add versatile teaching tools for different learning styles and teaching needs. 2. Design adaptable and expandable surfaces, from tools to spatial elements, as a learning medium to foster creativity. 3. Use the existing window ledge to build a tiered platform connecting indoors and outdoors, extending the boundaries of the educational environment.

Magic Tree Room×Reimagining the Mahogany Deck Located in the mountain town of Puli, Chungfeng Elementary School was rebuilt after the 1999 Jiji Earthquake, while over thirty mature mahogany trees—affectionately known to students as “Grandpa Tree”— survived and remain symbols of resilience and the school’s bond with nature. With 55% of the campus covered in greenery, it has become a living classroom that supports hands-on biodiversity learning. To renew a weathered wooden deck beneath the trees, teachers and students envisioned a multifunctional outdoor classroom and stage. The redesign introduces durable steel walkways and nest-like structures that weave between the trees, offering children new vantage points for exploring ecology while supporting performances, reading, and play. Although the design challenges conventional safety norms, the school embraced it as an educational opportunity. By integrating safety awareness into daily use, the project turns the renovation into a learning process—creating a wall-less classroom where children grow alongside nature.
Challenges 1. The original wooden deck has deteriorated from humidity, root pressure, and falling branches, leading to high maintenance costs. 2. Built around seasonal themes and interdisciplinary learning, the school’s programs once relied on this platform—but its current condition now sees far less activity and reduced educational value.
Design Strategies 1. Weather-resistant steel paths and nest-shaped installations create new spatial viewpoints, encouraging climbing, resting, and close-up engagement with the surrounding ecology. 2. It provides a flexible outdoor area for learning, performances, and play, shaping an open learning environment embedded in the natural landscape. Habitat|Co-Learning & Practice

Beacon Island×A Harbor for Emotions In this theater, colors, light, and sound become signals of emotion. Entering the darkened room feels like stepping into an inner passage, opening a journey of dialogue with oneself and others. Over a decade ago, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) at Fongshan Junior High School began with drama camps to reduce bullying, and has since expanded into a comprehensive program integrating emotional growth and sustainability. Here, adolescents’ silent questions—Am I valued? Am I accepted? Can I love? Do I have freedom?—find a medium in theater. Through role-play, students recognize emotions, navigate conflict, and practice building connections. The renovated space, transformed from a former performing arts classroom into a “small island” enclosed by white curved walls, black curtains, and flexible lighting, becomes a safe harbor for expression and reflection.
Challenges 1. Inadequate partitions and poor soundproofing reduce focus and engagement. The irregularly shaped classroom lacks backstage and storage space; while noise from nearby streets and fields disrupts SEL sessions. 2. Insufficient equipment limits performance. Large side windows and fragmented walls hinder projection; lighting and audio systems fail to support varied emotional scenarios.
Design Strategies 1. A curved wall defines stage and backstage; storage areas buffer noise and glare; black drapes create a “black box” for emotional flow. 2. Layered illumination shapes the mood; white walls act as enveloping backdrops; modular cubes double as seating or expressive props, enriching flexibility and experience.

Roadside Banquet Together×A Home Economics Classroom Built on Connection The classroom at Renwu Senior High School has served for more than three decades, yet its outdated layout and congested circulation restrict both teaching and learning. The renovation aims to create a safe, engaging environment for culinary education, while also becoming a cultural venue for the school’s long-standing international exchanges. Inspired by the Taiwanese “ban-doh” banquet tradition, the design reinterprets the classroom through collective memory and shared ritual. Two large central workstations streamline movement and improve safety while preserving the intimacy of cooking together. The suspended lighting canopy introduces a stage-like ambiance that encourages focus, respect, and attentive collaboration. Open shelving integrates appliances as both functional tools and displayed objects, fostering a mindset that values care, order, and stewardship of materials. As the renewed classroom expands its possibilities, it evolves beyond daily lessons into a hub for campus-wide learning, cross-border exchange, teacher training, and community events.
Challenges 1. Disorganized circulation compromises safety and disrupts teaching flow. 2. Gas stoves increase burn risks and interrupt instructional continuity. 3. Aging space and equipment limit the classroom’s ability to create the cultural atmosphere needed for heritage cooking and thematic lessons.
Design Strategies 1. Two central worktables anchor four induction-equipped cooking stations, shaping clear circulation while creating a communal setting that supports safe, efficient teaching. 2. Revise storage by grouping equipment by size and adding icon labels to support order and care. 3. Transform windowsills into interactive showcases for learning, display, and exchange.

Kuanhsi Tea Factory×A Living Museum of Culture and Learning National Kuanhsi Senior High School, founded in 1924, has deep roots in Taiwan’s tea industry. Its former tea-making factory once trained generations of craftsmen and bore witness to the rise and decline of local tea production. As industry shifted and vocational programs changed, tea education waned. Yet recent crossdisciplinary efforts have sparked renewal. A school-based food and agricultural exploration program, tea garden restoration, and new courses on tea-processing tools have reactivated the site. The design reorganized the factory into coherent zones, aligned historic machines with production flows, and introduced QR-linked guides that turn dormant equipment into teaching aids. Relics—from the mechanical shaking machine to the cypress-wood Oolong tea rolling machine—were preserved within a “quasi-museum” narrative that situates the factory within both regional and national tea history. More than a spatial update, this renewal represents a collaboration between educators and designers to preserve culture, pass down craft knowledge, and extend the educational mission of a century-old school.
Challenges 1. Old tea-processing equipment requires systematic reorganization for teaching. 2. Lack of clear circulation, functional zoning, and flexible tables reduces learning efficiency. 3. With south-facing openings along the main circulation long sealed and an entrance on the east side, the factory has remained detached from campus life and daily student activity.
Design Strategies 1. Open a new south entrance with glass walls, greenery views, display vitrines, and a wood deck to create an inviting threshold. 2. Create three functional zones—teaching, practice, and exhibition—each equipped for its specific use, and repurpose old cabinets, tea leaves drop opening, and historic photos as tasting platforms or art installations to give the space new narrative depth.

Indigenous Science Laboratory Bridging Culture and Learning Minho Junior High School serves a community where one-third of the students are Tsou children, an Indigenous group of Taiwan, who leave their mountain homes to pursue their education. A teacher from Taipei used the World-view Oriented Learning Framework (WOLF) to guide students in exploring traditional Tsou fishing traps and muntjac hunting flutes by interviewing elders, examining hydrodynamics, buoyancy, and sound waves, and reconnecting cultural knowledge with modern science. Even in an outdated and rudimentary lab, students repeatedly excelled in national science fairs, which in turn helped them rediscover their identity and motivation. The designer began with extensive fieldwork, observing Tsou materials, colors, and spatial logic. Weaving patterns, roof structures, and mountain outlines were translated into a culturally rooted design, and the classroom was even reoriented northward so students could see the distant mountains behind their teacher—a subtle reminder of home. When children can recognize their origins in space, they gain the confidence to face the future.
Challenges 1. The limitations of a standard classroom layout leave the space without the functional support or cultural context needed for a lab that serves both science learning and Indigenous craftsmanship. 2. The space lacks clear zones for teaching, hands-on practice, and storage, limiting cross-disciplinary learning and safe experimentation.
Design Strategies 1. Redefine the classroom’s center by drawing from Tsou architectural logic to orient learning around students, freeing the side zone for equipment preparation and extending cultural textures and color cues throughout. 2. Use modular components and expandable tabletops while integrating triangular units drawn from Tsou landscapes and weaving patterns into lighting and cabinetry, allowing cultural motifs to enter daily use and making the space both flexible and educational.

Welcome to the Sugarcane Farm Canteen What can a single stalk of sugarcane teach a child, and how can a food and agriculture classroom grow alongside that learning? Students at Guangxing Elementary School follow a Taiwan Sugar Corporation supervisor into the cane fields to learn how the crops they pass each day become raw material for the Huwei Sugar Refinery—a living reminder of the sugarcane industry that once defined Erlin but has steadily declined. In response, the school has spent years developing a sugarcane-based, cross-disciplinary curriculum that integrates food culture, local history, environment studies, and art, collaborating with community cooks, vendors, and farmers. The design team likewise entered the fields, learning from agricultural experts so that seedling cultivation, climate observation, and pest-management knowledge could be embedded into classroom practice. Through planting and experimenting together, students, teachers, and designers transformed agricultural work into a shared learning process—the foundation of this renewal.
Challenges 1. Originally built as a kitchen, the 30-year-old classroom retains fixtures whose adult-oriented heights and layouts do not suit students and often leave them standing during lessons. 2. Food and agricultural courses are confined indoors, limiting opportunities for real-world observation and engagement with local agriculture. 3. Despite its prominent location, the outdated façade and barred windows prevent the space from reflecting the school’s character or welcoming the community.
Design Strategies 1. Use six sliding partitions to shift between modes and rebuild tables and chairs to universally comfortable heights with more durable materials, creating a space that supports instruction, food-education activities, and dining. 2. Create indoor and outdoor seedling zones—with child-scaled seedling tables and mobile trays—so students can learn directly from growth cycles and ecological care. 3. Open the campus edge with an outdoor cane nursery built from familiar agricultural materials, forming a shared base for school–community learning.

Reference Only×Co-creating the PBL Civic Classroom Hsinchuang High School has long cultivated civic literacy through practices such as magazine editing and podcast production. Building on this foundation, the Design Movement on Campus program introduced a new approach— reimagining the classroom through a collaborative process that positions designers, teachers, and students as coactors, placing users at the center of dialogue. Working together, the design team and faculty developed a four-part curriculum—democratic theory, fundamentals of spatial design, local color survey, and civic consensus workshop. These stages translated deliberative democracy into clear mechanisms for proposing ideas, reasoning through options, and making collective choices. With professional guidance, the redesign process became a shared exercise in co-governance between teachers and students, and it produced concrete outcomes, including a flip-panel display and an expanded blackboard wall refined through student and teacher input. The spirit of co-creation also appears in the curtain inside the media studio, whose color collage—drawn from hues students gathered during fieldwork, from old brick walls to temple carvings—expresses both community character and the shared act of making knowledge visible.
Challenges 1. The existing layout and circulation could no longer accommodate the growing mix of activities, from group discussions to media production. 2. The lack of flexible furniture and display tools needed for PBL constrained innovative teaching.
Design Strategies 1. Integrate participatory design into civic learning to foster critical and public-minded thinking. 2. Treat users as co-creators by refining zones, layouts, and furniture based on student input. 3. Use display walls and mobile writing boards to support open expression and collaborative learning.

In Mountain Winds Chiayi×A Tea Arts Classroom of Home and Horizons At nearly 900 meters above sea level, Renho Elementary School Taihe Branch (formerly Chiayi County Taihe Elementary School) sits amid the high-mountain tea fields of Alishan. The tea-arts teacher tells students that the highest form of a tea gathering is like a painting—wordless, yet capable of conveying the seasons. Students are guided to learn life etiquette through serving tea, experience art as they make utensils, and explore global geography through the world’s tea regions. Even as student numbers continue to decline in this remote valley, the school has persisted. The school hopes that before children leave their hometown, they carry with them the aesthetics, character, and memories formed through tea. The redesigned classroom brings nature indoors and embraces the spirit of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility, allowing students to shape their own aesthetic language through practice and display. Today, it is both a learning space and a place for daily dialogue. With the creation of the Tea-Mountain-Water Education Resource Center, Taihe now joins nearby schools in a shared learning network—welcoming visiting classmates with their first “cup of connection” to the world.
Challenges 1. Long-term sharing with other subject classes meant that the existing podium and furniture were unsuitable for tea arts instruction, increasing the risk of burns and other safety issues. 2. A cluttered, enclosed, and humid room—also used as a storage space—made it difficult to create the calm atmosphere needed for tea practice.
Design Strategies 1. Reorient the classroom to face the forest, create two quiet tea stations, and use earth-tone materials to soften visual noise and support focused practice. 2. Open walls with large doors and windows to connect the classroom with surrounding greenery and bring natural light to flow through the space. Forest|Growth through Collective Relay

Angel Nomads Class×A Resource Room as a Catalytic Hub Each morning at Shiwei Elementary School, the classrooms host small groups working on language, social skills, and individualized learning tailored to diverse emotional, physical, and cognitive needs. As student numbers continued to rise, the standard layout could only be used with difficulty and no longer met the requirements of special-education teaching. Although funding supported the renovation of only one room, the school and design team began a broader, system-wide consideration of how the entire set of spaces should function. This led them to reorganize the room with clearly activity zones, universal-design principles, and modular furniture that keeps the environment safe, coherent, and easy for children to navigate. Transparent storage and visual cues further strengthen independence, helping students manage materials on their own and feel more at ease in the setting. Shiwei’s transformation became a reference point for special-education teachers across Taiwan. It encouraged educators in many schools to rethink how learning spaces influence teaching quality, shifting their perspective from merely “making do” to intentionally designing environments that support diverse learners. These collective, incremental actions now form an interconnected safety net that better fosters children’s development and growth.
Challenges 1. With three resource classrooms shared by six teachers, simultaneous lessons created overlapping noise and activity that affected students’ focus and emotional regulation. 2. Abundant teaching materials were poorly organized, limiting student independence.
Design Strategies 1. Reposition the three classrooms and plan zones along a “calm-to-active” sequence, using intuitive, transparent storage to encourage focus, autonomy, and children’s confidence in managing the space. 2. Use systemized storage units, teaching carts, and custom movable low curved cabinets to create learning settings that balance flexibility with a sense of safety.

Aesthetics Lab×Redefining the Art Classroom It began with a simple intention: to create a classroom that felt “different”. At Xintai Junior High School’s Aesthetics Lab, an uncommon pure-white art room features a minimalist rectangular layout and a six-meter multifunctional central island. For the teacher and designer, the purpose was not visual spectacle but to sharpen students’ perceptual awareness. Worried that conventional, formulaic classrooms numb curiosity, the teacher hopes students will ask, “Why is the room white? What do the floor patterns mean? Why are the pipes colored?” At that moment, the environment becomes part of the learning process. The Aesthetics Lab sparked a campus-wide, systematic renewal of the learning environment. Nine specialized rooms—including a biology lab, a music room, a digital learning room, and an English library—were upgraded in succession, turning isolated renovations into a coherent and continuous transformation of the entire campus.
Challenges 1. The lack of dedicated art classrooms—along with insufficient storage, large work surfaces, and display areas— limits the development of the art curriculum. 2. Repurposing an idle biology lab—whose outdated layout and aging facilities can no longer support innovative teaching—into an art classroom.
Design Strategies 1. Use a white spatial base with selective CMYK accents and a golden-ratio floor graphic, shaping a neutral canvas where surfaces function as instructional tools and students’ imagination brings the space to life. 2. Connect learning and making through a golden-ratio central island that integrates a sink, podium, display, and storage to support diverse activities.

With the Ministry of Education’s 5-Year (Medium-to-Long Term) Plan for Aesthetic Education entering its third phase in 2024, the Design Movement on Campus (DMOC) — launched in 2019 — has, in collaboration with hundreds of schools across Taiwan, continued to pose important questions about the future of campus environments: What kinds of aesthetic experiences can learning environments offer? How can campus renewal follow regulations yet transcend them? In what ways can space itself support educational innovation? How can the making of public environments become a meaningful, hands-on civic lesson for all? These on-site experiments are gradually reshaping how we imagine the role of school settings. In the 1960s and 70s, Taiwan built standardized, utilitarian school buildings to accommodate the baby boom. Today, these structures are aging, while education is rapidly evolving. Applications submitted over the years of DMOC reveal how needs have shifted. In the

Students belong to a generation shaped by Taiwan’s declining birthrate, one that receives unprecedented attention yet is also expected to become both distinctive and highly competitive. At the same time, teachers shoulder the educational mission of the Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education while navigating rapidly changing social expectations: schools are now expected to foster not only knowledge but also emotional resilience, sustainability awareness, and a wide array of competencies considered essential for life in a complex world. Whether in terms of generational challenges or evolving pedagogies, the pace of change far outstrips the ability of physical spaces to keep up. experiment in transforming space into a field of practice. Teachers and students are not passive users but empowered actors. The real outcome is not the renovated building itself, but the transformation in people — how they learn, teach, and grow together. Over time, the program has revealed a key insight: the subject of campus environments must be repositioned. As primary users, teachers and students are not only empowered but enabled to shape the environments they inhabit.

From Authoritative Space to Participatory Field
Space, however, reflects and produces power. While power influences how space develops, space can also become a field where new forms of agency emerge. Yet students and teachers rarely participate in the making of their campus environments. Involving them turns design into a civic process, cultivating democratic literacy. Especially when every child has the opportunity to participate, such experiences accumulate and influence how public environments — and even democratic awareness — develop over time. A key question, therefore, is how spatial

tools that help them articulate needs and ideas. Through design-thinking-based courses, teachers and students become immersed in the process. Participation fosters a sense of ownership of the space, encouraging care and long-term management while gradually transforming engagement with the environment into motivation for learning. Beyond these practical strategies, the cultural dimension of the environment often remains subtle yet crucial. Culture here is not limited to aesthetic expression or historical symbolism. It also encompasses knowledge systems, community bonds, and shared values embedded within a place. When translated into design and daily management, these elements give campuses their unique spirit and vitality. Such work requires cultural observation, spatial interpretation, and thoughtful strategies of long-term stewardship. These efforts may not belong to the domain of construction, yet they are deeply connected to the sustainability and generative potential of learning environments.

a narrow emphasis on visual appeal and return to learning as its essential core. The beauty of a freshly renovated space is only a starting point; the real journey of educational innovation unfolds over time through use, adaptation, and practice. Some outcomes cannot be designed into walls or furniture — they must be nurtured through lived experience. This requires a dual approach: fostering learning through mutual trust, and practical spatial strategies. What ultimately sustains the environment lies not only in the space itself, but also in the people behind it and the intentions they bring to it. From project selection to design collaboration, construction, and post-use, multiple stakeholders — teachers, students, designers, advisors, and project managers — work as equal partners within a collaborative platform. Without hierarchy, they co-learn and co-create, while professional expertise helps guide decisions toward feasible outcomes. Ultimately, both people and environments must remain adaptive. In a rapidly changing world, educational initiatives must function like living organisms, capable of experimentation, crossing boundaries, adjusting, and recovering. When those who inhabit a learning environment develop the capacity to adapt and respond, the value of
