Constitutional amendments not dismissed by UK - Sharlene LEADER of the Opposition, Sharlene Cartwright Robinson does not agree with the Government that the United Kingdom government has dismissed the work of the Constitutional Review Committee. In statements to the press on Thursday (September 10) the party addressed the issues raised during the ministerial town hall meeting held on Monday in Providenciales. At that meeting, the Premier and ministers of Government addressed three issues, namely the proposed constitutional amendments, SIPT’s security costs and the Immigration Bill. Reiterating her party’s position on the UK’s response to the proposed amendments, which was sent by letter and read in the House of Assembly last month, the party leader made it clear what the PDM’s position is on the topic. She said they are not surprised by the UK’s plans to take “a slower approach to the recommendations”. “We do not agree that there has been a dismissal of the work of the committee and quote this excerpt from the letter, ‘...the work of this committee is so important and we will ensure that a dialogue on these issues is sustained with TCI and other overseas territories that wish to engage…’” She noted that in their collective years of experience, her party has observed that it has been the approach of the UK on constitutional amendments to hold several talks in an engagement process. “I call to mind the work of the 2006 Constitution that begun in 2002 and which after the constitutional modernisation review body’s report held three rounds of talks.

taken in this process as we represent the people on this important issue,” Cartwright Robinson pointed out. Meanwhile, addressing the contentious immigration bill, she noted that while there are many issues that seem out of reach, there are many that are within the country’s control and remit alone, and immigration is one of them. “We are on record calling on this Government to slow down the consultations and to give its people more information and more opportunities to understand its immigration proposal and be heard.” She reiterated that the bill must be carefully approached, and that while it must provide a fair and transparent path to citizenship, caution must be taken that it is one that will guarantee that Turks and Caicos Islanders are protected, empowered and able to obtain jobs. “We believe that the Government must place this new found passion into getting our people to work and in better working conditions with fair pay, the possibility of upward mobility and training in environments that are conducive to growth and advancement of the individual and our country. “It is my prayer that our people will be vigilant, hear the issues, seek out the facts, make reasonable and well informed choices and decisions and then hold us all into account according to our roles.” She promised that as Opposition members in the House of Assembly, the PDM will continue to be diligent in its oversight roles and will always work for the best interests of the people. The party leader also mentioned that the PDM will be meeting with the Premier to discuss these and other issues at a date still to be determined.

THE PROGRESSIVE Democratic Alliance has expressed dissatisfaction with and rejection to the pending Turks and Caicos Status Bill currently before the House of Assembly. In a release to the press this week, the Oswald Skippings led party stated that the bill gives a clear indication that the Turks and Caicos Islands is about to start a new thriving industry, an immigration status citizenship industry. He noted that the bill is in effect saying that “whosoever will may come, the doors are wide open and the eyes of the political directorate of the Turks and Caicos are tightly closed”. “In fact, this bill is saying that the leaders of this country are not only blind, but deaf and dumb as well,” he added. According to Skippings the bill is inviting everyone – whether stateless, oppressed, dangerous and desperate - from anywhere and everywhere for refuge, prosperity and prominence as the people of the Islands suffer from poverty and marginalisation. “And most of all, we will give you political sovereignty over us, because there will be more of you that can vote than of us that can vote, I have to ask what in God’s name has gotten over our elected officials?” the party leader stated. He noted that the bill indicates that the TCI is suffering and dying from the lack of citizens and is craving to enlarge the franchise so that the indigenous makeup of Turks and Caicos Islands would be a thing of the past. “This bill says that we are desperate to be further diminished and disempowered as a people who have already lost everything that we are entitled to, from our constitution, our top ranking civil service jobs, to our menial jobs on the street. “Why is there such a desperate rush to broaden the franchise and thereby take away our franchise as Turks and Caicos Islanders? “Don’t we like to belong, don’t we want to belong, don’t we have a right to belong, or are we all under some demonic spell that has us

senselessly duped into accepting our national demise?” According to the party leader, it is obvious that the immigration red carpet is being extended and this is making Turks and Caicos Islanders carpet beggars. He said that if the Government does not have the will nor the skill to produce sensible immigrations bills that will protect its people, there are patriotic others in this country that have the common sense and ability to fashion sensible immigration bills that allow for however many thousands of immigrant workers that are needed to work here to fuel the economy without giving away their birth right. “As a developing country, we are definitely in the business of welcoming and helping our less fortunate neighbours and others by offering them much needed jobs but we are not in the business of offering random citizenship or status that would further alienate us, our children and our grandchildren in our own country.” He added that the TCI is a country offering jobs that helps expatriate workers, helps their families back home and helps to build their own country’s economy through tens of millions of dollars in remittances sent through banks, money transfers and individual carriers. The PDA leader said: “It is a little wonder that we are perceived as being so passive and directionless, while people come from distant lands are not afraid or ashamed to show their patriotism and love for their country, their indigenousness and their culture of their homeland, and I have no problem with that. “We as the legitimate custodians at home in our homeland, are too intimidated to cherish and protect ours rights and our heritage here at home for fear of being labelled as anti-foreigners.” He further appealed to the lawmakers and politicians to show some kind of patriotic loyalty, vision, common sense and intestinal fortitude, to kill the immigration bills before they kill the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

TCI to petition United Nations on UK’s refusal of constitutional changes THE TURKS and Caicos Islands Government has signalled its intention to head to the United Nations Committee to air their concerns about the United Kingdom’s refusal to accept proposed constitutional changes. Speaking at a town hall meeting on Monday, September 7, Premier Rufus Ewing called on members of the public and the Opposition to join the Government in its petition to the international body. He told the gathering that the issue has to be taken to the international arena, as the world needs to understand that the United Nations Convention is being violated by the United Kingdom government. “We have another opportunity to state our case to the United Nations Committee because we have had invitations and I will extend that invitation to the Opposition and members of the public who would like to petition the UN. “We were invited to submit our petition about our concerns such as the refusal to give constitutional advancement and we as a Government will take up that opportunity and I am inviting the Opposition members and any other member who would like to attend that meeting to rally and petition the UN because that is the only way we are going to get true

representation in this country,” Ewing urged. He added that the TCI cannot look to the British for representation, as they are conflicted. “We have to represent ourselves with the help of others other than the UK government.” The Premier stated that there needs to be a constitution so that the Government can do what the people elected them to do and one which will ensure that they can govern properly. He said it does not matter which party is in power, the same problems will exist. “For the United Kingdom to have an election, let a Government come into power and still does not trust that Government to make decisions for themselves and on behalf of the people, is not democracy. “So for the UK government to deny and have no interest whatsoever – outrightly, blanketly and categorically state that no I am not interested in changing anything in that constitution is indeed a slap in the face of democracy and all Turks and Caicos Islanders.” He noted that everyone knows what the UK’s trepidation is, but that the country needs to rally together to demand the changes they made an effort and a sacrifice to put together. “It is important that we stand

together on the issue of constitutional advancement and constitutional reform, it is important that we do so.” He added that he and the Leader of the Opposition have agreed to sit and plot a way forward, as well as put together a bipartisan team to go the UK to sit with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Members of Parliament to show

them why it is necessary for the TCI to get what the people asked for. “Every time I go to the Governor his usual question is - this is what they say, this is the constitution that you have if you don’t like it you can call a referendum. “So I am telling you that we have to push and push at this door until

that time comes and if you think that you have had enough and we think we have had enough then that is an option that we have to strongly consider and make a decision as Turks and Caicos Islanders,” the Premier advised. He noted that it is not his decision alone, but the decision of all Turks and Caicos Islanders.

Haitian man dies after crashing into wall in Grand Turk A MAN was pronounced dead at Cockburn Town Medical Centre in Grand Turk on Friday, September 4, at about 3pm after crashing a car into a wall on Waterloo Road. Haitian national Luckner Plaismond was the driver of a silver 2003 Nissan Teana who was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty at the hospital that day. Police press officer Audley Astwood said that a number units, including the Fire Department were dispatched to assist with extrication. Grand Turk medics arrived on the scene and informed 911 that

the man was unconscious with massive head injuries, including an open skull fracture. He was placed on oxygen while fire officers worked on extricating him. Astwood said that at about 4pm that day medics reported that the patient was extricated and that they arrived at the hospital where doctors tried to resuscitate the patient. Press officer for the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, Takara Bain, said in a statement that the patient arrived at the Grand Turk hospital that Friday at about 3.57pm via

ambulance. She said that the trauma team was immediately activated and the history provided to them upon arrival, was that of an unresponsive male involved in a motor vehicle accident, suffering from severe injuries. Despite the efforts of the trauma team, the patient did not respond to resuscitation and was pronounced dead. Police were in attendance at the emergency department and the matter has been referred to them for investigation as per hospital protocol.

Education Minister Water supply welcomes student and in Grand Turk faculty back to school MINISTER of Education and Deputy Premier Akierra Missick has sent out heartfelt best wishes to students and staff for the new academic school year, which opened on Monday, September 7. In a press statement, the minister said that the new academic school year will see many changes, not only in staffing, but also programmes offered at schools. “We are looking forward to the introduction of the Caribbean Vocational Qualification in our high schools, which will provide another avenue for students to succeed in obtaining certification and qualifications preparing them for the working world.” The minister also welcomed the new staff joining the Education Department this year. “During the year we expect to be joined by a new education psychologist who will replace Mr George Pratt who is commencing study leave. “Similarly, Ms Dara Thomas will proceed on one year’s leave to pursue a Masters in Educational Leadership in the United Kingdom. “Accompanying Ms Thomas’ departure will be the transfer of Mr David Bowen, Principal of Marjorie Basden High School, to the Department of Education.”

She added that the last is a significant change and it is expected that Bowen will bring with him his over 15 years of leadership to the position of Education Officer High Schools. Another change will see Rodney Cox taking the reins as Acting Principal at Marjorie Basden High School. “The ministry celebrates these changes and see them leading to improvements in teaching and creativity in the sector, and wish Mr Pratt and Ms Thomas the greatest success during their studies aboard,” Missick said.

According to the Minister: “We are looking forward to the opening of our campuses doors, and welcoming our students and staff to an exciting school year. “No doubt some of the infrastructural changes such as new science labs, home economics labs and woodwork rooms at various schools will enhance the teaching and learning environment in our sector.” The Ministry and Department of Education have worked tirelessly over the summer break to ensure all campuses and staff are ready for the new academic year, she said. “We ask that parents and guardians be prepared to work with their child’s school administrators to ensure that this academic year is a safe and healthy one. “We advise that parents become actively involved in their schools parent and teachers associations (PTAs) so we can take a joint and coordinated approach to matters that may arise during the school year. “We urge parents to remind their children that their schools belong to them and should be treated as such.” Meanwhile, a ministry and department team will be conducting site visits during September to all of the campuses.

increased GRAND Turk is now experiencing an increase in the production of water to residents in that Island following a successful maintenance exercise last month. This is according to a Government release this past week, which stated that the general maintenance work, conducted on the water production facility last August 29, increased water from 180 gallons per minute, which equates to 259,200 gallons per day to 191 gallons per minute, which equates to 275,040 gallons of water a day. Water distribution from the reverse osmosis facility has also increased to 200 gallons per minute between the hours of 6am to 7.30pm, which is up from 190 gallons per minute. As a result of the increased water pressure, residents in North Creek, Cork Tree Beach, Upper Overback and

North Ridge should now be receiving water, the release read. Amanda Misick, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Planning, said: “Collectively we are proud that the exercise was successful, the ministry will continue to take measures to improve the consistency in which persons receive water. “My team is encouraging all customers who are not receiving water to contact the Water Undertaking Unit on numbers 338-3519 or 338-3522 to discuss their fault, so that it may be addressed. “Given that we are in the peak of the hurricane season all residents are encouraged to try and replenish their reserves and to continue to practice water conservation methods, as best as possible. “Tips can be obtained from the team at Public Works Department.”

Emergency Bahamian pastor passes away management accreditation for TCI

BAHAMAIN Pastor, Canon Leo Cox passed away last week Thursday, September 3, at Doctor’s Hospital shortly after 8pm, the Bishop of the Bahamas and TCI has announced. Cox was 71-years-old. Benjamin Leopold Cox was born on February 22, 1944, in Nassau to the late Benjamin and the late Olive Cox. He was a graduate of St Anne’s School. After graduation he worked at Pan American Airways, Bahamas Airways and BOAC. He tested his vocation at Salisbury Theological College, United Kingdom in 1972, the last of the clergy from this diocese to train there. At Salisbury, he followed the late Canon Samuel Sturrup, (the first from the Diocese to go there), Fr Addison Turnquest, the former Fr Louis Dames, Canon Delano Archer (one of his closest friends to this day) and Fr Peter Grist. He was ordained deacon on the Diocesan Patronal Festival, June 24, 1975, the first to be ordained on that date and beginning a long tradition in the Diocese. He was priested the same year on December 21. On December 24,

1975, he took up his appointment as the incumbent at St Stephen’s Parish, Central Andros, with responsibility for North Andros. He served there for three years, also and then at St Stephen’s, Eight Mile Rock, for five years. He went on to serve at St James, Adelaide, and St George’s, NP. He served as Chaplain at St Anne’s School for a brief period, but his major stint was at St John’s College. He related very well to students

and staff, and was rewarded with very good BJC results from his students. He concluded his active ministry as full-time Chaplain at Her Majesty’s Prison. He retired in 2007, and it was that same year that he suffered a stroke, which limited his mobility thereafter. On October 19, 1968, he married Janet O’Brien. The couple have two children, Patrice Antonio and Deidre Cox. He is also survived by one son-in-law, Ryan Antonio, four grandchildren Ian, Alliyah, Curtis and Robert, one sister and three brothers. We offer them our condolences and assurance of prayers. Leo Cox’s ministry has been marked by hard work, tireless effort and ‘out of the box’ thinking. He was able to relate to all types and ages of people, to galvanise them into action and to get things done. He also loved music and, though he did not term himself as a musician, he took on the choir facilitator/ director role in several parishes and continued 

THE GOVERNMENT, through the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME), has applied for Emergency Management Accreditation Programme (EMAP) assessment. During the week September 14 to18, five assessors from EMAP will be in country to conduct an on-site examination of the DDME and the Emergency Management Programme in the Turks and Caicos Islands against 64 industry emergency management standards. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has provided sponsorship for the initiative. EMAP is the only accreditation and assessment process that exists for emergency management programmes worldwide. The assessment will examine all phases of the disaster management cycle (preparedness, prevention, mitigation, response and recovery) and will involve reviewing documents, and interviewing stakeholders/partners in disaster risk reduction to ensure that policies and

procedures that govern operational activities are clearly defined and documented. Full accreditation can only be achieved if all 64 standards are met. It is the expectation of the DDME that by conducting the assessment and seeking to adhere to EMAP standards, the institutional and operational capacity of the department and TCIG will be further strengthened, a release from the organisation read. It continued: “Hence, the department’s ability to carry out its mandate to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands will be enhanced. “With this expectation, the DDME aims to be the second territory outside of the United States and Canada to be granted international accreditation for its disaster management programme.” Presently, the British Virgin Islands is the only British overseas territory to achieve accreditation, which was granted in April 2015 by the EMAP Commission.

Cabinet Police capable of providing discusses $170m SIPT security - PDM loan refinance AT ITS last meeting in Grand Turk on Wednesday (September 9) Cabinet received an up-date on progress to refinance the $170 million UKguaranteed loan bond by February 22, 2016. A post Cabinet statement from the Governor’s office stated that a draft request for proposal will be presented to the next meeting of Cabinet on September 23, for approval. Members of Cabinet further advised Governor Peter Beckingham to authorise the Minister of Finance to sign a non-binding aide memoire produced by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) following its policy reform mission to the TCI in August, subject to amendments to existing wording. A country strategy paper produced by the CDB will be presented to the next meeting of Cabinet on September 23, for approval. Cabinet also noted the procurement waivers granted between April and June 2015 according to the provisions of Section 21 of the Public Procurement Ordinance 2012. Also noted were the recommendations of the Procurement Board to award contracts in line with the Public Procurement Ordinance 2012 as follows – TR14/39 Grand Turk Master Plan (amended), TR15/5 Framework Agreement for Consultancy for TCIG Capital Projects, and TR15/20 Energy Audit and Evaluation of the Hon NJS Francis Building. The Governor was further advised to agree to the extension of the UK Armed Forces Act 2006 and the UK Armed Forces Bill 2015 to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Meanwhile, Cabinet also considered a request for change to the draft development agreement and accreted land lease between the developer, TCI Toscana GP Ltd and Vista Development Ltd, and the Turks and Caicos Islands

Treasury and Revenue Dept reopens THE PUBLIC is advised that the Treasury Department and Revenue Control Unit has officially reopened as of 8am on Wednesday (September 9). People can now return to the location at Town Centre Mall, Downtown, Providenciales to conduct Government related transactions and business.

Cabinet approved the submission of the Statement of Net Excess Expenditure to the House of Assembly and also agreed that the Department for Planning should budget for the cost of 15 meetings of the Physical Planning Board per annum. They also approved the renewal of a lease arrangement for the rental of office space for the Internal Audit Department on the second floor of the building on block parcel 10306/68 in Grand Turk owned by JC Development. As well as the appointment of the following members of the Physical Planning Appeal Tribunal – Royal Robinson (chairman), John A Williams (member), Paul A Gardiner (member), Brian Cyrus (member), James Parker (member), and the appointment of Natasha Hall as secretary of the Physical Planning Tribunal. The Governor was also advised to appoint Captain Harold Williams as deputy chairman of the TCI Civil Aviation Authority Board for a period of one year, Naysia Missick to the post of Collector of Stamp Duty and he approved the appointment of Norman Hamilton as a member of the National Insurance Board as Employer Representative for a period of one year. Cabinet further approved a donation of $100,000 from the TCI Contingency Fund for emergency humanitarian relief assistance for Dominica following the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Erika.

THE PEOPLE’S Democratic Movement this past week weighed in on the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team (SIPT)’s $2.2 million security cost debacle with a measured approach. Leader of the party, Sharlene Cartwright Robinson told press that the Turks and Caicos Islands could ill afford to have any adverse incidents that will seek to reverse the positive turn in its reputation. “And so we believe that SIPT should feel and be made to feel safe as should all residents and this is why we believe that these monies can better be spent by way of investment in our local police force through advance specialised training.” She also noted that the TCI’s track record of entertaining and welcoming persons of high international status has been stellar and without incident. Adding that: “While we do appreciate that SIPT’s stay here is under different circumstances, we believe it will certainly be to everyone’s benefit if we were to bolster the resources of the police force and build capacity. “We are not convinced that what SIPT may need is outside the scope of our internal security.” The party leader stated that this investment can also help in addressing the challenges faced in the area of immigration, which is fast becoming a national security

concern. “We believe that the resident populations of these Islands are larger than we can imagine. “With the scarce resources that we have, together with this Government’s intention to widen the franchise and increase the permanent population through the proposed Immigration Bills, certain systems and institutions must rapidly rise to the demand should the Government proceed without design and at a manageable rate against the voices of reputable members of the clergy, attendants at the various town hall meetings and its own high ranking supporters,” she said. Cartwright Robinson added that there is not enough information on the SIPT’s expenditure. She said: “We are surprised that over these near three years, there has not been presented a proposed budget for SIPT’s spending to Cabinet ahead of approval there for passage in the House of Assembly. “We believe that a line itemed budget must be in existence for the final total figure to be presented.” The PDM will never renege on its responsibility to provide oversight and to call for transparency and accountability which are the hallmark tenets of good governance, the party leader assured. She reminded that she has over the years, in her capacity as Leader of the Opposition, been consistent in posing questions relating to the SIPT

and Civil Recovery actions and in particular costs. She said that as recently as July 2015, a question was posed - “Will the Hon Attorney General be pleased to say, what is the total cost of SIPT related trials to date? Will she say how much has been spent on lawyer’s fees inclusive of legal aid? “Over the period, HMG agreed to pay costs and did pay costs, please advise how much was paid and over which period? “Will she further advise when did TCIG assume cost again and why was this decision made by HMG?” She further stated that even while serving on the Consultative Forum, she posed questions about the SIPT’s funding and the sharing of the cost between the TCI and the UK. It was on one of these occasions that the former Attorney General made the public aware of the resumption of costs by the TCI Government, Cartwright Robinson recalled. “We believe in accountability and believe that as members of Cabinet, the Government ought to be able to obtain the information on SIPT’s broad expenditure without compromising its work. “As we are not privy to know the details of what goes on in Cabinet other than what is being said in the public domain, we do not understand how there can be a denial of this information,” she added.

PRIME minister David Cameron’s dissolution honours list creating of 45 life peers has been subject to intense criticism, reflected across the media. He has been accused of affronting democracy and bringing the British parliament into disrepute. The unelected House of Lords, at one time in the past numbering just 50 members, now has 831 members, the second largest parliamentary body in the world after communist China’s National People’s Congress of 2987. However, they have about 20 times the UK’s population, at 1,357 million people to the UK’s 64 million. The Lords has far too many members who have been placed there for what can be politely described as the wrong reasons. Interestingly the Tory supporting media has been in the forefront in expressing distaste and disapproval, believing the appointments will also damage the Conservative party. What has been particularly surprising has been the arrogance

surrounding David Cameron’s inner circle, refusing to respond to or take the slightest notice of those who expressed outrage, both before and after the appointments were announced. It is behaviour similar to that of a king who feels he can do whatever he likes, grant patronage almost at will, but in the case of David Cameron, is it because he simply just does not care because he has said this is his last term as prime minister? Why should all this bother the Crown dependencies and the British overseas territories? Firstly, because her Majesty the Queen plays a constitutional role in all such jurisdictions, to a varying degree. The reality of that role is that the Crown has for many years meant the UK government, but the de facto taking over of the granting of membership of the House of Lords by the prime minister, means that the status of the Crown dependencies and British overseas territories (BOTs) have become more diminished and less autonomous. Although all have their own systems of government and their own prime minister equivalents, they all are represented on defence and foreign policy by the British government and whatever happens with the British parliamentary democracy in some way affects them, even if it is by association

only. The British government is ultimately responsible for their good government, and that right has never been challenged. The problem is that the House of Lords is the UK parliament’s second chamber, the equivalent to a senate, and has important responsibilities as part of the British democratic system. The decisions of the British Houses of Parliament do affect the Crown dependencies and the British overseas territories in varying degrees. Unlike other countries, such as France, who have overseas territories representation in both their Houses of Parliament, the United Kingdom still has not brought in similar rights for British overseas voices to be heard. It would not be quite bad not if there was just restriction from elected House of Commons membership, but to be kept out of the House of Lords as well is particularly insulting, when the make-up of the House of Lords is examined in detail. Just why should this ad hoc mixture of people have any say at all in affecting those jurisdictions which the UK has some form of responsibility for? The Ministry of Justice is responsible for the affairs of the three Crown dependencies of Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, and the

Minister of State responsible has been Lord Faulks, QC, since January 2014. Lord Faulks has never been elected and was only ennobled in 2010. Lord Faulks is also a Privy Councillor. Where is the logic of having a person with no previous Crown dependency connections being put in such a position of responsibility? This is no slight to the capabilities and calibre of Lord Faulks, who appears to have had an illustrious legal career, but why cannot that position be held by a suitable Crown dependency person who could quite easily be made a Life Peer and Privy Councillor Is this just a little insulting to the Crown dependencies, that a key decision maker in their affairs is someone they have absolutely no say in appointing. Why not create a small number of Life Peers and Privy Councillors who could serve on the Committee for the Affairs of the Channel Islands as well? Why not have some a Privy Councillor for the Isle of Man too, who are in a slightly different position to Guernsey and Jersey? The British overseas dependencies come under the UK’s Foreign Office Minister, James Duddridge, MP, the Falkland Islands under Colleague Hugo Swire, MP, and Gibraltar and the Cyprus Sovereign Base Areas

under David Lidington, Minister for Europe. The constitutional procedures are complicatedly different for the British overseas territories, with a population of about 350,000 compared with the Crown dependencies’ approximately 290,000, but just why are they all denied representation on affairs which the UK parliament and the UK government decides for them? So, on a matter which could easily give such representation, why no life peerages given so that they could have some say in such matters? No one could deny that there are plenty of suitable candidates, from distinguished former politicians to those who have put in outstanding public or business service. This omission is glaring, but in view of the quality of the new Life Peers recently announced, and indeed of Life Peers generally, is not the lack of anyone in the Lords to put forward the views of Crown and overseas dependencies, an oversight which has now become an affront to them? Is it not also an affront to deny all but Gibraltar from participating in the referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU? All are affected in various ways by the UK’s membership, but currently will have absolutely no say in the outcome. Maybe, Gibraltar can assist the case for everyone else?

Six Lime customers win cash prizes SIX cheques of $1,000 each were awarded to the lucky winners of a text promotion that was recently hosted by Lime Turks and Caicos. During a press conference on Wednesday (September 9) at the company’s main headquarters in Providenciales the cheques were presented to the winners and their representatives. Among the winners were Brequell Missick, Josephine Connolly, Nancy Castillo, Jamie Williams, Kendra Gardiner and Eleith Mounton. Unable to attend were Brequell Missick, Eleith Mounton and Josephine Connolly. During the conference Williams thanked Lime TCI for the token and said that he has been a faithful customer of the company for quite a number of years now. He also thanked God who made it possible for him to win the funds. Gardiner said that she felt “kind of nervous” but gave all of the thanks

to God for making it possible. She said that she planned on using the funds to support her two children. At the event the general manager of Lime Turks and Caicos, Delleriece Hall, said that the company usually holds a back to school special and invite the community. This was not possible due to not having sufficient time, so staff put together something that would still benefit customers. Hall said: “We decided to come up with a promotion which will help parents to benefit to assist their children with back to school. “This was the opportunity that we had to offer $6,000 and spread it among six winners.” Hall said that the response to the promotion was overwhelming. “It was really good. The promotion was advertised all over social media and persons were sending out their text messages to enter.” She said that she hopes to put on a

Coastal clean-up this September 19 MEMBERS of the public are being invited to show their support and care for the TCI’s natural environment by getting involved – whether through a business, school or church - in the international coastal clean-up day. The event, being held on Saturday, September 19, is being hosted by the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA) in their continued fight trash-free seas. “It doesn’t matter where you are, just grab a bag and collect that litter,” a release from the department read. “In 2014, 168 people collected 279 bags of trash nation-wide. DEMA hopes that this year the event will have increased support, making it one of the most successful cleanup campaigns in the country” Amy Avenant, DEMA’s Environmental Outreach Coordinator, said. It is hoped that the initiative will encourage people across the Turks and Caicos Islands to remove litter found along the shoreline, underwater or in the bushes, to help create healthy waters for everyone, including the wildlife and communities that depend on them. “You, your school or organisation can get involved by getting a group

together and spending an hour out of your day cleaning up a beach, bush, path, road or sea-bed in your local area,” Avenant said. He was already a team player and willing to help wherever and whenever his services were needed. At the prison he took the job of chaplain to new levels, ministering to inmates and to staff alike; he fought for equality and fair treatment for all. He sought donations so that

he could provide needy inmates with toiletries and other basic items. He was also known to pursue clergy of all denominations to encourage them to visit their members who were incarcerated. As one deeply steeped in the rich, high church tradition of St Agnes Church, he was a natural choice to be appointed Canon Liturgist. As such, he was responsible for coordinating all the liturgical functions relating to the conduct of Diocesan services. He will be missed greatly.

CRIME BLOTTER Quick response by police leads to arrest of burglary suspect OFFICERS from the Beat and Patrol Division are being credited for the arrest of a 34-year-old man who according to reports had burglarised a home on Wednesday (September 9). Police said that shortly after 4am, they received a report that a man had robbed a home in the Bight. Officers from the mobile division responded and upon arrival in the area they arrested the suspect after they found him with an item in his possession believed to be stolen from the home that he was allegedly seen leaving. The suspect was taken into custody and will be formally charged for burglary soon.

Beat and Patrol cops nab another burglar Quick response by officers from the Beat and Patrol Division led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man who fitted the description of a suspect who had burglarised a home on Friday, September 4.

Shortly before 12.30pm, police received a report that a man had burglarised a home in the Bight. Officers from the mobile division responded and upon arrival in the area they arrested the suspect after they found the stolen items in his possession. He was taken into custody and was later formally charged for burglary. He is expected to appear in court soon.

Police announce crackdown on traffic violations Road traffic accidents and driving offences continue to be a major concern for the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) in terms of both public safety and the ability of police officers to trace drivers in the event of an incident. Last month (August), officials from the Road Safety Department made a public announcement via the media that they have sufficient stocks of vehicle licence plates and windscreen decals to issue to anyone who has paid the appropriate fee but who had previously been unable to obtain the plate or decal. Police said that there is no legitimate reason why drivers and users of vehicles do not have registration plates and

decals fixed to their vehicles now. They warned that it is an offence under the road traffic ordinance to drive a motor vehicle on the road while not displaying a registration plate or having the decal fixed to the windscreen. Beginning September, officers of the RCTIPF will be conducting road side checks and targeted stops of vehicles that are not properly displaying the required plates and decals. The excuse previously accepted that people had paid the appropriate fee but items were ‘not in stock’ will no longer be accepted, police stated. Drivers found not to be properly displaying number plates or decals will be prosecuted.

CLEANING up the image of Clement Howell High School is one of the main items on the agenda for principal Kadean Cunningham this academic year. In an interview with Cunningham on the school grounds on Tuesday (September 8), she said that she has been diligently working on the project. She said: “As a school, we are continuing to insure that all aspects of the school guide are attended to. “We are working on the students in terms of their performance academically and the extracurricular activities. “We want to ensure that the students leave here in a holistic

manner, not only focusing on academics.” When asked how she planned on taking on the task she said that uniform and hairstyle rules have been enforced. The principal said that along with the end of term report cards a letter was sent out to parents informing them about some of the changes in the dress code. The girls now have to wear their skirts two inches below their knees and are no longer allowed to wear braids or any types of hair extensions to school. The boys are no longer allowed to wear any type of sneakers to school, there is a standard type of shoe that is mandatory for all the boys to wear. On a different note, despite

the fact that the Long Bay High School is still not completed, the principal said that this will not affect accommodation at the school this new academic school year. “Well, we don’t have a space problem because we have always had this amount of students, so it is as if we are back to normal. “We were happy when we heard that there was going to be a new school and that the first formers were going to be there because that would have given us more space to work with but the fact that they are back here, it really doesn’t take away anything because we are accustomed to having this number of students. “Basically this is business as usual,” Cunningham said.

Once completed, the school will accommodate first form students, students who are just entering high school. Cunningham is a native of Jamaica, where she served as vice principal of a prominent school in

Kingston. Among some of the positions she held in the education sector are lecturer at the University of Jamaica and school inspector in Jamaica where she went around and assessed schools.

Operational challenges School reopens and of small businesses we must be firm THE TCI has always been known for its small business sector; throughout our Islands, the small business has been a service provider to many communities and a source of employment too. It is known for its local products, friendly atmosphere and an uncomplicated way of conducting business so that people feel welcome, because the small business has become integral to their culture. It is not as impersonal as we would find the larger, more nonlocal business. But the landscape of small businesses in the TCI is changing, particularly with the onset of a modern hospitality sector, and here, the operational challenges set in. Many traditional small businesses continue to operate in the same controlling way and do not diversify their products to suit the needs of tourists. Some stock what they want, regardless of the demand for other goods. Some shops in the vicinity of where hotel guests frequent, don’t want tourists to touch their wares. And tourists have complained about this. It’s the same controlling attitude which is a major challenge to the way some small businesses operate. Guests want to examine wares,

and ask questions about them. And many small businesses feel uneasy about this. But they have to change their overall business psychology if they want to sustain themselves and contribute to the economy. Limited capital is another challenge facing small businesses. They can’t restock as they wish, or even expand. This limits sales. And there is the issue of suppliers not delivering on time, or having limited capital to source products at the required quantity. Sometimes creditors send goods that were not even ordered. Competition in the same space where the shops are close to each other is a further challenge. Owners from one shop visit others to see what they have and check the frequency of sales of products. If sales are brisk according to their intelligence gathering, they would purchase and sell the same goods as their competitors. Everyone then

sells the same thing. Where there are vendors from particular countries operating in the same space, who have access to cheaper goods, local businesses face a unique challenge. Another challenge is that other groups, sometimes not of TCI origin are more aggressive than the TCI vendor, and this causes issues. These challenges are real. But many times our businesses don’t co-operate, or advise customers to go to another local business for articles they themselves don’t have. The TCI’s businesses need to share information about customer behaviour and avoid undercutting others with low prices, although they experience reduced profits or even a loss. Collaboration then becomes the solution to the operational challenges of the TCI’s small businesses.

Dear Editor, As school reopened throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands on September 7 back-to-school time inevitably brings many changes for children and families: the first day of kindergarten or first grade, new preschools or childcare settings, and new classrooms and new teachers. Most of us who have been through the system know about this anxiety, therefore, making a smooth transition between home and school requires teachers and early childhood professionals to help children feel good about themselves and learn to trust other adults and children. Helping children adapt to new situations can ease parents’ minds and give them a chance to become involved in their children’s education. Remember, parents - transitions are exciting opportunities for children to learn and grow. Parents, remember you and the early childhood professionals share a role in making children feel safe and secure as they move to new educational settings. Of course, such milestones in children’s lives can cause anxiety too. Strengthening the relationship between educational professionals and families will help create smooth transitions for both adults and children Monday morning. As a parent, be enthusiastic about the upcoming change. Remember our children are watching us, if you

are excited and confident, your child or children will be also. From last week you should have been preparing your child. How your child or children react to separation. Visiting the school before Monday will help emotionally. Introduce your child/children to the new teacher in advance. Arrange a play date with another child from your child class, preferably one-on-one, so that your child will see a familiar face daily. Start daily routines that will add continuity, I could hear my wife talking in my head daily about this. Let your child become involved with packing lunch or laying out clothes etc. Put aside extra time, particularly on the first day of school, for chatting and communing together. But remember not to prolong the goodbye, like I did last year and end up spending half the day with my baby girl. If your child whines or clings, staying will only make it harder. Always say goodbye to your child. Be firm but friendly about separating. Never ridicule a child for crying. Instead, make supportive statements like: “It’s hard to say goodbye.” At the end of the workday, put aside your concerns about your career and focus on being a parent. Floor tiles donated to Grand Turk school BY DAISY HANDFIELD FLOOR tiles were donated to the Eliza Simons Primary School in Grand Turk this week courtesy of the Grace Bay Resorts Foundation. Carlton Mills, manager for talent growth and local affairs at the resort, said on Monday (September 7) that he was contacted by a representative of the school who stated that there was a need for tiles in two of the fourth grade classrooms. Mills said that although the school was not one of the foundation’s adopted schools he decided to go ahead and assist. “We were contacted by the school about two weeks ago because two of their classrooms were not tiled and apparently the ministry did not provide funding for it. “As good corporate citizens and because of the need of the school and our passion for education we decided to tile two of the classrooms. “We provided the materials and a parent provided the labour,” Mills said. The manager said that their main goal was for students to be in an environment that was conducive for learning. He said that they felt that once the students were comfortable with tiles on the floor it gave them a better appreciation of the classrooms. Mills said: “It makes learning more exciting and meaningful because you get that brightness in the classroom and the fact that someone has donated that to you it shows to the students that there is someone or a group out there who cares.” The Weekly News spoke to a fourth grade teacher at school, Monique Cox, who said that the teachers are very excited about the donation. She said: “The state of the classroom before the donation was actually deplorable, so with the improvement of the classroom it makes it more welcoming for the students in order for effective teaching and learning to take place.” Eliza Simons Primary School is one of two Government primary schools in Grand Turk and serves a student population of 270 students,

aged four to 12. The Grace Bay Resorts Community Foundation, which began in 2009, has adopted five Government schools - Charles Hubert James Primary School and Adelaide Oemler Primary School on North Caicos, Marjorie Basden and Iris Stubbs in South Caicos and Ianthe Pratt Primary School in Providenciales. In the past years the foundation has donated backpacks, school supplies and held other activities in an effort to help and encourage the students.

AS I concluded in last week’s column, one of the key steps in strengthening our national security is the ability of law enforcement to identify every resident in these Islands. One of the surest ways of accomplishing this is to legislate and establish a National Identification Database. This database can include fingerprint, blood type and an identification number which contains the address and last known occupation of each person as well as their status in this country. I know there has been recent debate over whether or not we should fingerprint persons who enter this country and I am aware of the diverse views on this issue. Nevertheless, I am in support of this initiative because we have to develop a better method of keeping track of the individuals to visit, overstay their visit or reside in this country. database will assist law enforcement with criminal investigations and evidence gathering. This could be another avenue to reduce the police reliance on human cooperation and rely on the science of DNA and forensics. When it comes to addressing crime and national security, we need to be more progressive and innovative our thinking. We love to brag about this country being a safe paradise still unspoiled by the rampant social and criminal ills which have plagued many of our neighbouring countries but continue to take the recent crime waves lightly.

Bear in mind, many of those countries can recall in their history as well when they were unspoiled paradises, but now face the daily daunting tasks of protecting their citizens and visitors from criminal and violent elements. Our story will be sadder than theirs because unlike those countries we have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others, invest in national security initiatives now while the problem can still be contained and make the small sacrifices now in an effort to avoid the big sacrifices of the future.

Warm up to common sense IS GLOBAL warming real? The world has kept good daily records of global temperatures for less than 100 years. Temperatures and weather patterns were carefully checked during World War II because military (and later commercial) aviation depended on good weather facts and predictions. Interesting is that despite the smoke produced by the war, temperatures in that period did not rise. Geologists know that the earth has a core which remains hot, very hot. Sometimes the hot core pushes to the surface as volcanos spewing out ash at rates hundreds of thousands more plentiful than 1,000 coal fired power plants. Having driven and flown over the Allegheny and Rocky mountains numerous times makes me wonder at the forces which formed these gigantic mountain ranges. Under the sea more mountains

God’s operations are beyond our understanding except that we know he is there. The universe operates strictly by God’s rules. Seventy-one percent of the world’s surface is covered by water leaving only 29 percent land. This includes the uninhabitable land of the world’s ice caps, extremely cold areas and extreme high mountains – no one lives on Mount Everest, or the massive

deserts of the earth. Satellite technology has proven that of this 29 percentage of land mass only 10 percent is home to 98 percent of the world’s population. That is three percent of the world’s surface occupied by the vast majority of mankind! Can the people occupying this tiny area of the earth affect the climate of the entire earth? The rise in the ‘progressiveness’ of man has moved us beyond the days when we used common sense. Global warming being caused by man seems hard to believe when undeniable facts are considered.

We must apply our common sense to put aside the statements of high profile individuals who spew out predictions of catastrophic global warming being caused by man to obtain some goal unrelated to what these big shots predict. The globe may be warming but mankind contributes very little to any warming trend. There once was an ice age when glaciers dug the Great Lakes of the USA. The largest source of fresh water in the world. Those glaciers were melted long before mankind was given dominion over the Earth. Warmer ocean water causes more and violent hurricanes. The current trend is less storms compared with the past. The extremely cold temperatures of the northern USA winters have sent us more tourists. Let us pray to God more tourists grace our shores and pay our bills. Facts tell us to warm up to common sense.

Beaches employee travels abroad for entertainment workshop BEACHES Turks and Caicos team member and senior animator, Odyssion Riley, recently travelled to the United States to participate in the highly acclaimed annual Sesame Observation Training at Sesame Place in Pennsylvania. According to a press release issued by the resort, Riley has been with the company two years and is currently training to become the acting Sesame Street dance captain, a position that will put him in charge of all of the resort’s sesame street performances. In the release the senior animator said that this was an eye opening experience for him

“It was also a great learning experience. Working in animations, sometimes it’s hard to experience the magic of the show because you’re dealing with the technical aspect.” Animation manager Roxanne Wade, chose Riley for the programme because of his hard work, dedication and loyalty to the Sesame Street programme and the resort. Wade said that Riley began working at the resort in April 2013 and that she has never been disappointed with his work. She said: “He is very consistent in his line of work. Animations is a very tiring department, but it is

crucial to always appear to have a lot of energy. “Even during peak season when Odyssion may be going on his second performance of the day and tenth hour of work, he has a smile on his face and is eager to preform to the best of his ability.” On the first day of Riley’s training he, along with other Beaches Resorts team members from other properties, were given the opportunity to observe the park. The second and third days were spent learning how to clean and maintain the Sesame costumes through a series of workshops. Riley learned more efficient ways

On the final day Riley was given the opportunity to go back to Sesame place and ask to observe or learn more about anything he was still curious about. Riley said: “This opportunity was really special. Not just because of the knowledge I gained, although that is going to be really important as I take on a bigger role at Beaches resorts, but also because it made me feel very important. “It’s a great feeling to have such a large company recognise your talent and want to help you with your professional growth.”

More than 300 students obtain placements in Gov’t schools BY DAISY HANDFIELD ABOUT 330 students were able to obtain a placement in a Government primary school or Clement Howell High School in Providenciales for this academic year, according to Director of Education Edgar Howell. Although the director did not have the exact figures at hand, he did say that about 150 students were registered for primary level and about 180 students for high school level. In an interview with Howell on Wednesday (September 9), he said that the first round of registration began in March 2015 when parents and guardians were invited to bring in children either four-years-old or children that were going on the age

of four before the end of December 2015 to be registered into a primary school. The director said that as for high school level, the main focus was registering former sixth grade students who were now entering into high school. Both primary and high school registrations were conducted simultaneously. Howell said: “The process went quite smoothly, we arranged the registration by surnames and parents knew which days they could come depending on the surname of the child that they were seeking to become registered.” In past interviews with Howell, one of the topics of concern was usually the lack of space to

accommodate all of the students into the Government school system. In this interview he said that ‘space availability’ will continue to be an issue for a long time. “It is always an issue because the majority of people are trying to access schools in Providenciales. “I need not say this but it has to be stated, there are only three public primary schools on Providenciales so there are only so many students that can be accommodated in those public primary schools. “There is only one public high school and the majority of people living on this end wanting to access public primary schools for various reasons. “I think space is going to be an issue for a while because the

concern that we hear on this end is that parents are unable to pay private school tuition for their children,” Edgar said. Howell said that parents migrating the children to the outer islands for schooling is still an option on the table, once space is available at these schools. He said: “That option is still open to parents if they have relatives living

on other islands and the children can live with those relatives or they can provide accommodation for them and they want to register in one of the other schools, for example the other three public high schools in the country or if they want to register in one of the primary schools. “On the other islands there is always the possibility of more spaces for the children to access.”

TURKS and Caicos Island’s very own Jack Nasty has once again used his music to capture and celebrate a historical moment in the TCI’s history by writing a song dedicated to the Traveller’s Choice award as world’s number one destination, by Trip Advisor. The song entitled ‘Take me to paradise’ speaks of the beautiful TCI, its beaches, resorts and friendly people. David Lightbourne, better known by his stage name Jack Nasty, spoke

to the Weekly News on Wednesday (September 9), stating that he has always wanted to make a song that highlighted the beautiful Islands, but he always knew that it should be approached much different from any other song. He said: “I also thought it was very important to capture all aspects of TCI life to include our true ambience, accommodations, attractions, culture, people and amenities. “The perfect opportunity presented itself after I learned of

the TCI’s most recent Traveller’s Choice award for world’s number one destination by Trip Advisor. “This award prompted me to write and produce a song centred on the concept, ‘we are number one’ and I named it ‘Take me to paradise’ because the TCI is paradise to many visitors and Islanders alike.” The local talent revealed that the song would be released along with the launch of the music video sometime in October during an event at the Regent Palms resort in Providenciales.

Chiropractor gives backpack safety tips for youngsters BY DAISY HANDFIELD A CHIROPRACTOR based in the Turks and Caicos Islands is concerned about the way youngsters wear their backpacks to school. She had decided to speak out on safety tips to prevent spinal issues in children this 2015/16 academic year. In an interview with the owner of Courtyard Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, Lise Cloutier on Thursday (September 10) at her office in Turtle Cove, Providenciales, she said that according to the Canadian and the American Council of Chiropractic, backpacks should not weigh more than 10 to 15 percent of the child’s body weight. However, if it was a younger child it should be more towards the 10 percent side of the child’s body

weight. This means that if a child weighs 50 pounds, the book bag should not be more than five pounds. She said: “The reason that this is so vitally important is because obviously the backpack is being carried on their spines on their back. “At that age the spine, the body is growing and developing very quickly and our spine is what I like to call our lifeline. “It protects our information highway, it protects the spinal cord, which is an extension of the brain carrying the brain’s vital information to every cell, organ, and tissue in the body. “It’s the master regulator of the body, it’s the master healer of the body and at the end of the day you live your life through your nervous continued 

The Children’s Club in Grand Turk is an outlet for children to have fun while they indulge in educational activities

Grand Turk youngsters invited to children’s club CHILDREN between the ages of eight and 12 in Grand Turk now have the opportunity to participate in several activities organised by the Turks and Caicos National Museum Children’s Club. The schedule will kick off with a family outing on October 17 hosted by the Governor’s wife, Jill Beckingham. On November 14 the children will be able to participate in a rake and scrape event in Grand Turk at the National Museum on Front Street. Finally, on December 19 there will be a ‘holiday arts and crafts’ event at the museum. The club manager, Angel Ben said on Wednesday (September 9), that these initiatives were arranged in efforts to bring the children together for different educational lessons. “This will benefit the students because this is a way for them to have an outlet during the school year for more educational activities and being able to share with their classmates. “We were hoping to get the rest of the classmates involved and interested in what we do during the Saturday club along with encouraging volunteers to come out and assist.”

Ben said that the Children’s Club was established a decade ago and that the children meet one Saturday every month during school periods. The children meet at the National Museum from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays, free of charge. People who may have any questions or are interested in becoming a volunteer can call or text Angel Ben on 241-2794. All children must sign up and return the parental or guardian permission slip prior to club starting on October 17.

Precious Treasures receives $10k donation for science lab BY DAISY HANDFIELD A CHEQUE for $10,000 was donated to the Precious Treasures International School in Providenciales by a Jamaican entrepreneur on Monday (September 7) to assist with the development of a science laboratory. During a brief ceremony on the school grounds, the generous contributor, Vincent Hosang handed over the cheque to local businessman and cofounder of the Precious Treasures International School, Allan Hutchinson. According to Hutchinson, the funds will go towards the development of a science laboratory to accommodate students who may aspire to branch off into the medical field. In his speech, he spoke about the close relationship that he and Hosang had prior to the donation. “He [Hosang] has visited the school and has seen what we are doing and so he has agreed to donate to our bold vision a large sum of money. “Because of his kindness, he has agreed to make a donation to our science lab,” Hutchinson said. The cofounder said that he along with his wife [Yvonne Hutchinson], had a very bold vision

of transforming the school into an international school. Their goal was to produce children who were interested in lifelong learning and who aspired to become world citizens. Hutchinson added that these visions required extra funding which would not be possible with just tuition fees because those funds were already committed for the payment of staff. He concluded by thanking Hosang for the generous donation and assured him that the funds would be put to good use. During the ceremony Hosang said that he felt privileged and proud to be a part of the school, even if just through a donation. He said: “Technology is going so far nowadays that a doctor can stay in his office and operate on you through technology in your home or at the hospital. “You students are going to grow up and you will be scientists tomorrow and I am pretty proud of what Mrs Hutchinson [who serves as principal of the school] is doing here.” Hosang, who is the owner of Caribbean Food Delights, one of the largest frozen packaged products in the United States said that education

Determining the sex of a papaya tree QUESTION: How early in the life of a papaya tree can you tell if it is a female or hermaphrodite that will produce fruit? I have several plants started from seeds. My real dilemma is that, once I grow a plant, I can’t bring myself to discard or destroy it! At this rate, pretty soon, I’ll be overrun with papaya trees! Answer: I know your dilemma as I have grown papayas from seed before myself! Until the seedlings start to bloom after germination I

know of no way to tell them apart. You can easily grow your own papaya (Carica papaya) fruit in the Turks and Caicos Islands. But for your papaya tree to bear fruit, you need to know whether you have male or female tree. It takes just a glance to identify the types of flowers on a papaya tree in bloom. Male flowers Papaya trees with only male flowers are considered male and will not

produce fruit. You can identify male flowers by their shape, colour and location. Male flowers will look like elongated bells on trumpets. Each male flower will have 10 filaments supporting anthers. These look like long threads topped with fuzzy anthers. You will find the male flowers hanging down from stalks. According to the California Rare Fruit Growers, extremely hot weather during the summer can cause a tree with only male flowers to produce perfect flowers or male flowers that appear short and stocky, like female flowers.

Female flowers Papaya trees with only female flowers are female trees. Female flowers produce papaya fruit after they are pollinated. Female flowers may be white or yellow. They are large in size but short. The ovary should be visible at the base of the flower, giving the flower a stocky appearance. The stamens are very apparent in the middle of the flower, but there are no filaments or anthers. Trees with both male and female flowers Some papaya trees have both male and female flowers. These do not require a second tree for pollination, because the male flowers on the tree can pollinate the female flowers on the same tree. The likelihood that your papaya tree will have both male and female flowers on it depends on the variety. For instance, ‘solo’ papaya has a

66 percent chance of producing both male and female flowers. Perfect flowers Perfect flowers are found on bisexual or hermaphroditic papaya trees. These flowers contain both male and female parts on the same flower.

They have a wide, stocky base and are found growing directly from the bases of the leaves, like female flowers, but they produce stamen like male flowers. Trees with these types of flowers do not require a second tree for pollination.

Protect your home against burglars ALTHOUGH we all lead busy lives, there are easy things you can do today to make your home less vulnerable to a burglary. Invest in basic hardware that will protect your home. There are low-cost devices that will do a lot to make your home more secure. All exterior doors should be solid rather than hollow-core doors. A hollow-core door can be kicked in, whereas a solid door will keep would-be intruders out. Your exterior doors should have peepholes. Peepholes allow you to see who is outside your door before you open it. Just the presence of a peephole can deter intruders who want to maintain the element of surprise.

If you have a sliding door then you need to have a sliding door bar. This prevents someone from opening the door even if the lock is successfully forced. It is also a good idea to purchase window opening latches that will prevent the window from opening wider than a certain amount. You can install the latches high enough to allow fresh air to enter the home, but low enough to prevent someone from getting in. Always make use of exterior lights once night falls. These lights will make potential intruders feel exposed and keep them away from the entrances to your home. Intruders have only two options for entering the home: doors or

windows. If you secure all points of entry, the perpetrator will have nowhere to go. It’s always important to cultivate safe practices. Unfortunately, homeowners are sometimes their own worst enemies. If the doorbell rings, we open the door automatically, without using the peephole we have installed. We enter the house with a bag of groceries and forget to lock the door behind us. The systems you have put in place to secure your home are only effective if you use them. As you go about your daily life, start to change careless behaviour. Make locking doors and windows, and looking before opening the door,

Dental emergencies -Part three THIS article is the last in a series of three outlining the steps that should be followed if you find yourself dealing with a dental emergency. Being informed will help you to be better prepared which could be the difference between saving or losing a tooth. As part of being prepared for a dental or any medical emergency it is advisable to save in your phone the contact numbers for your dentist, doctor and hospital. Dental abscess An abscess is an infection that occurs at the root of a tooth or in the space between the teeth and the gums. Abscesses can be extremely painful and, if left untreated, can irreparably damage gum tissue, the surrounding bone and other teeth. In extreme cases it can impact your overall general health. If you can see a pimple-like swelling on your gum that is painful this could indicate that you have an abscess. You should have seen a dentist as soon as possible. An antibiotic will often by prescribed to treat the infection and treatment planned to deal with the cause of the infection. As a quick fix to ease pain and help draw the infection (pus) to the surface, rinsing the mouth with a mild salt water solution is advised. An over-the-counter medicine

Broken braces If a wire breaks or sticks out of a bracket or band it can be uncomfortable if it is poking into your cheek or gum. As a quick fix, try using the eraser end of a pencil to bend the wire into a better position. If you are unable to do this, try to cover the end of the wire with a piece of gauze until you can get to your orthodontist or dentist. Do not attempt to cut the wire yourself. Lost Invisalign aligner If you have lost the aligner that you should currently be wearing, revert back to the previous one or, if you were close to changing to the next, switch to the next one in the series. If you have reverted back then contact your dentist as soon as possible so that a replacement aligner can be ordered. Soft tissue injuries This is anything that involves injury to the tongue, cheeks, gums or lips and generally results in bleeding. To control bleeding, follow the steps below: - Rinse the mouth with a mild saline (salt-water) solution. - Use a damp piece of clean gauze or cloth and apply pressure the bleeding site. Hold firmly in

place constantly for 10 minutes. To be effective keep the pressure on for the full time, do not keep removing it to check if the bleeding has stopped. - Hold a cold compress to the outside of the mouth or cheek in the affected area. This will help to control the swelling and also help with pain relief. - If the bleeding does not stop or if the injury looks as though it may require stitches, see your

dentist or go to the emergency room immediately. Continue to apply pressure in the area of the bleeding site with the gauze/cloth until you can be treated.

Finally, if you find yourself dealing with any dental emergency situation, try to stay calm and if in any doubt call your dentist or hospital immediately.

Cayman Premier: Government taking permanent resident ruling ‘seriously’ THE Cayman Islands government will provide a full response, making changes if and where necessary to its immigration regime in the wake of a recently released court ruling that was critical of several aspects of the permanent residence system, the premier said. Premier Alden McLaughlin said Monday that government leaders were taking legal advice on what has become a complex issue, and he expects to make announcements in response to the ruling in the next few weeks. “We are taking this issue very seriously,” Mr. McLaughlin said, declining to discuss specifics. The issues identified in an Aug. 28 court judgment dealt with two major areas: First, the actions of the Immigration Appeals Tribunal in judging two cases where nonCaymanians had applied for permanent residence – the right to remain in the territory for the rest of their lives – in which the tribunal’s actions were determined to be a “miscarriage of justice.” Those applications were made under a former version of the Immigration Law. The Immigration Appeals Tribunal was ordered to rehear the applications of the two workers, one of whom had applied for residency status in 2006. The second matter involved the current permanent residence system and how points toward status are awarded to applicants. A SERIES of earthquakes, most of them of 4.0 magnitude strength, have occurred to the northeast of Barbados within an 18-hour period. The latest, a 4.1 magnitude quake that was recorded 135 km northeast of the capital, Bridgetown, occurred at 8:36 on Wednesday morning according to the University of the West Indies’ Seismic Research Centre. It was the fifth tremor registered since Tuesday afternoon. The first 4.0 magnitude quake occurred around 1:28 p.m. on Tuesday, about 122 km northeast

of Bridgetown. It was followed by another tremor of the same size at 4:39 p.m., about 140 km to the northeast. Bank of the Bahamas losses slash NIB income 66% THE National Insurance Board (NIB) suffered a two-thirds cut in total comprehensive income for 2014, due almost entirely to its share of Bank of the Bahamas’ near $69 million net loss. The social security system’s annual report, seen by Tribune Business, reveals that its ‘bottom line’ was slashed by 65.9 per cent year-over-year, falling from $33.7 million in 2013 to just $11.5 million for the 12 months to endDecember last year. An analysis of its financials shows that the drop was largely related to a $17.37 million loss on NIB’s ‘investment in associates’, which are Bank of the Bahamas and Cable Bahamas. It holds 28.21 per cent and 22.32 per cent equity stakes in the bank and Cable, respectively, thus ensuring that it had to take a hit on Bank of the Bahamas’ extensive losses for the year to end-October 31, 2014. NIB’s ‘loss on associate’ investments was entirely attributable to Bank of the Bahamas, given that Cable Bahamas is profitable, and represented a near-$17 million increase on the ‘red ink’ incurred in 2013. NIB’s financials thus show the wide-ranging impact that Bank of the Bahamas’ difficulties, which required a subsequent taxpayer ‘bail out’, have had on other key elements of the Bahamian

economy - not just the bank’s shareholders and customers. Elsewhere, there was a 44.5 per cent year-over-year increase in the number of businesses and self-employed persons that NIB prosecuted for non-payment of contributions. The number of cases approved for prosecution rose from 474 in 2013 to 685 last year, and NIB said in its annual report that it “continued to face challenges in the area of compliance and enforcement. “To address the issue, the organisation enhanced its complement of inspectors by 28 persons during the year. In addition, sustained focus was placed on prosecutions as part of the compliance effort; 685 new cases were filed in court and 621 cases were completed.” While NIB touted that contribution income exceeded benefits expenditure for the fourth consecutive year, it did so barely. Income rose by 6.6 per cent yearover-year to $244.5 million, while benefits spending grew at a faster rate of 9.6 per cent to $244.1 million - a mere $400,000 difference. The contribution income increase was attributed to the rise in the insurable wage ceiling from $600 to $610 in July and NIB’s compliance drive. Wage ceiling adjustments are set to take effect every second July going forward.

Cayman: Trott-Edwards guilty of murdering teenager A jury this afternoon found Kiahna Trott-Edwards guilty of the murder of 16-year-old Shijuan Mungal. She had stood accused of inflicting a fatal blow to Mr Mungal after a confrontation with him on September 8, 2014, outside the housing complex where she resided near Ord Road, Warwick. The teenager died in hospital three days after sustaining an injury to the back of the head. He had been struck with a baseball bat. During her Supreme Court trial, Ms Trott-Edwards said she had struck in self-defence, maintaining that Mr Mungal had earlier become hostile after she reprimanded him for loudly using bad language on a public bus. Trott-Edwards, 32, was found guilty on Wednesday afternoon by a unanimous verdict. She was remanded in custody by Judge Charles Etta Simmons until she is sentenced.

Government says Bermuda commercial immigration on back burner – But some see it necessary to boost economy WITH very few options to boost the economy, Bermuda has missed an opportunity by putting the idea of commercial immigration on hold. This is the view of Don Mills, chairman and chief executive officer of Canadian company Corporate Research Associates, which is a partner with Total Research Associates in Bermuda. However, Sir John Swan, the former Premier, welcomed the news by saying that granting full status to high-spending investors would have “riled a few Bermudians”. Michael Fahy, the Minister of Home Affairs, said last week that the introduction of such allowances had been put on the “back burner” because Bermuda “doesn’t have the appetite at the moment to pursue it”. Commercial immigration allows individuals to gain certain residential rights and citizenship rights if they invest large sums in the country. The idea was raised during the One Bermuda Alliance’s 2013 Throne Speech as a potential means of creating jobs and stimulating investment in the Island. Mr Mills, who lives in Canada where commercial immigration contributes to its economy, described Sen Fahy’s announcement as

“disappointing to hear”. He told The Royal Gazette: “There are not a lot of options for Bermuda in terms of growing its economy. It needs more foreign investment and in different sectors. If you can attract economic immigrants who could do work in the IT sector, as an example, you could create another leg of the economy to grow. “It wouldn’t take a lot of people to make a difference to come into the country and spend a minimum of $5 million each on economic job creation. “Only 100 families coming in is pretty small, considering 5,000 left the Island since the great recession. “You are a long way from where the economy was in 2008 and there is a big gap that needs to be made up — you have issues of unemployment — I don’t know what the solutions would be, frankly. “It is a touchy subject, for sure. Maybe the Government needs time to explain how it would work and how many people would be involved, and that might create a greater sympathy to that as a solution.” However, Sir John believes the Island can still attract foreign investment through the granting of Permanent Resident’s Certificates

The PRCs have restrictions on real estate ownership anyhow, but to go the full status and everything else, it will rile a few Bermudians, I’m afraid.

Bahamas’ first pregnancy resource centre opened by former abuse victim BAHAMIAN-BORN Rhonda Darville triumphed over sexual abuse and two abortions to become the founder and executive director of The Bahamas’ first pregnancy resource centre (PRC). Darville, who grew up in Nassau and worshipped at an Anglican church, was molested by her brother and a priest at an early age, going on to travel a destructive path that led to abortion. LifeNews.com reports that she underwent her first abortion at the age of 18, and later had a second, going on to attempt suicide on three occasions as a result of the emotional pain from the procedures. According to LifeNews, she was one of the many women who attempt suicide after abortion, with statistics showing that post-abortive women are six times more likely to commit suicide than women who have given birth. THE former music industry figure Jonathan King has been arrested on suspicion of historical child sex offences, the BBC understands. Mr King, 70, was arrested at his home in Bayswater, west London, by Surrey Police officers on Wednesday morning. Two other men, aged 77 and 86, both from Walton-on-Thames, were also arrested and later released on bail. The arrests were made in connection with allegations linked to the Walton Hop Disco in Walton-onThames. An ongoing investigation, titled Operation Ravine, is looking into allegations of sexual offences against children connected with the disco in the 1970s and 1980s. Surrey Police said specialist police officers were searching the men’s properties. All three men were arrested on suspicion of various sexual offences concerning boys under the age of 16, Surrey Police said. Det Ch Insp Karen Mizzi said:

Scientists spot most distant galaxy ever: 13.2 billion light years away ASTRONOMERS have just made an amazing discovery: a galaxy that is so far from us in the universe, we are seeing it from not long after the Big Bang. At 13.2 billion lightyears away, this galaxy is the furthest ever viewed by humans, and that dating would place it just 600 million years after the Big Bang, according to a Daily Mail report. Researchers from Caltech who were searching deep in space for some of the earliest known objects from the universe have unearthed a treasure: galaxy EGS8p7, estimated to be 13.2 billion years old. That means the scientists are looking at a snapshot of what the galaxy looked like a whopping 13.2 billion years ago — the universe if believed to be 13.8

A Hinxton Group report says editing the genetic code of early stage embryos is of “tremendous value” to research. It adds although GM babies should not be allowed to be born at the moment, it may be “morally acceptable” under some circumstances in the future. The US refuses to fund research involving the gene editing of embryos. The global Hinxton Group met in response to the phenomenal advances taking place in the field of genetics. A range of novel techniques combine a “molecular satnav” that travels to a precise location in our DNA with a

It has transformed research in a wide range of fields, but the progress means genetically modified babies are ceasing to be a prospect and fast becoming a possibility. Earlier this year, a team at Sun Yat-sen University, in China, showed that errors in the DNA that led to a blood disorder could be corrected in early stage embryos. In the future, the technologies could be used to prevent children being born with cystic fibrosis or genes that increase the risk of cancer. There have been calls for a moratorium on such research, which has left many asking where to draw the line - should any embryo research be banned, should it be allowed by only for research or should GM babies be permitted?

Queen Elizabeth II becomes longest-reigning UK monarch THE Queen has thanked wellwishers at home and overseas for their “touching messages of kindness” as she becomes Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. Speaking in the Scottish Borders, the 89-year-old monarch said the title was “not one to which I have ever aspired”. At 17:30 BST she had reigned for 23,226 days, 16 hours and approximately 30 minutes surpassing the reign of her greatgreat-grandmother Queen Victoria. David Cameron said the service the Queen had given was “truly humbling”. Dressed in turquoise with her trusty black handbag at her side, the Queen spoke briefly to the gathered crowds earlier. “Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones - my own is no exception - but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness,” she said. Migrant crisis: DenmarkGermany rail links suspended DENMARK has suspended all rail links with Germany after police stopped hundreds of migrants at the border. Danish police also closed a motorway between the two countries when some asylum seekers began walking north after being forced off a train. They say their destination is Sweden. As the EU struggles with a major migrant crisis, the European Commission has proposed that 120,000 additional asylum seekers should be shared out between members, using binding quotas. Denmark’s DSB rail operator said trains to and from Germany had been suspended for an indefinite period because of exceptional passport checks. Two trains carrying more than 200 migrants are being held in Rodby, a major port with ferry links to Germany. Danish police say many migrants are refusing to leave the trains because they do not want to be registered in Denmark. Police also closed part of the E45 motorway - the main road link between Germany and Denmark after about 300 migrants left another train and set off on foot towards Sweden near the border town of Padborg. Sweden has become a top destination for refugees after it promised to issue residency papers to all Syrian asylum seekers. Denmark’s new centre-right government has promised to get tough on immigration. Since its election in June it has slashed benefits for new arrivals and restricted the right to residency. About 3,000 migrants have entered the country since the weekend. Prime Minister Lars LokkeRasmussen said Denmark was under pressure as asylum seekers arrive on their way to Sweden. “This clearly shows that what we are facing right now is not only a refugee problem, it is also a migration problem,” he said. A surge of migrants fleeing conflict and hardship in Africa and

the Middle East has pushed north through Europe over the past few weeks. Many of those escaping the civil war in Syria have travelled from Turkey across the sea to Greece, through Macedonia and Serbia, and then to Hungary from where they aim to reach northern Europe. On Wednesday European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced plans for a “swift, determined and comprehensive” response through a quota system. In a “state of the union” annual address, he said tackling the crisis was “a matter of humanity and human dignity”. Among Mr Juncker’s proposals: § EU member states to accept their share of an additional 120,000 refugees, building upon proposed quotas to relocate 40,000 refugees which were set out in May (though governments then only actually agreed to take 32,000) § A permanent relocation system to “deal with crisis situations more swiftly in the future” § Commission to propose list of “safe countries” to which migrants would generally have to return § Efforts to strengthen the EU’s common asylum system § A review of the so-called Dublin system, which states that people must claim asylum in the state where they first enter the EU § Better management of external borders and better legal channels for migration “It’s 160,000 refugees in total that Europeans have to take into their arms and I really hope that this time everyone will be on board,” Mr Juncker told the European Parliament. The new plans would relocate 60% of those now in Italy, Greece and Hungary to Germany, France and Spain. The numbers allocated to each country would depend on GDP, population, unemployment rate and asylum applications already processed. Countries refusing to take in migrants could face financial penalties.

Cameron: UK to accept ‘thousands’ more Syrian refugees

Brazil cut to ‘junk’ credit rating by Standard & Poor’s BRAZIL has lost its investmentgrade credit rating following a downgrade by Standard & Poor’s to “junk” status. The US rating agency said mounting political turmoil and the difficulties faced by President Dilma Rousseff’s government in tackling growing debt was behind the decision. Brazil was awarded an investmentgrade rating by S&P in April 2008, when the country’s economy was on the rise. However, sliding commodity prices and austerity have created a recession. Ms Rousseff’s left-wing government had imposed austerity measures in a bid to avoid such a downgrade. S&P downgraded Brazil - Latin America’s largest economy - sooner than had been expected. The move - a major setback for Finance Minister Joaquim Levy’s attempts to shore up public finances - is likely to rock the Brazilian stock market on Thursday. S&P cut Brazil’s rating from BBB-minus to BB-plus, which

denotes substantial credit risk. The outlook on the new rating remains negative, which means further downgrades could soon follow. Andre Leite, an analyst at TAG Investimento, said that Brazil’s rating was now lower than Russia. “If another rating agency also lowers Brazil, then very probably we’re going to see institutional investors obliged to pull their money out,” he said. The government said last month that that the economy was officially in recession. S&P said: “The political challenges Brazil faces have continued to mount, weighing on the government’s ability and willingness to submit a 2016 budget to Congress” that met economic targets. “The negative outlook reflects what we believe is a greater than one-in-three likelihood of a further downgrade due to a further deterioration of Brazil’s fiscal position,” the agency said. Planning minister Nelson Barbosa said the country would recover its investment-grade status when the economy returned to growth.

Venezuela offers to take in 20,000 Syrian refugees VENEZUELA is prepared to give asylum to 20,000 refugees from the conflict in Syria, President Nicolas Maduro said. The socialist leader’s offer late on Monday came as Europe struggles to cope with record numbers of asylum seekers escaping conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Their plight is capturing the attention of the world. “How many more Arabs must die before a great human conscience of peace is awakened?” Maduro said. “I want 20,000 Syrians to come to our Venezuelan fatherland,

Michigan man found naked in bed with daughter, stabs son-in-law: police A 47-year-old Michigan man is facing an attempted murder charge after he allegedly bedded his daughter and later stabbed his sonin-law — who found them lying naked together in the bed. The suspect’s daughter, who is 24, told police she had been out drinking with her father, Henry Allen Michael, who was recently released from prison, and feared she was sexually assaulted, reports TV Station CBS Detroit. Her 25-year-old husband told police he arrived at his Pontiac home at 3:30 a.m. Saturday and found his father-in-law sleeping in bed next to his daughter. Both were naked, he said. The son-in-law woke up Michael and the two men got into an altercation that resulted in Michael stabbing the victim in the back with a knife, the station reports.

Henry Allen Michael, 47, was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his son-in-law who caught Michael in bed naked with his own daughter.

Michael then fled the house in the victim’s car and was later apprehended by authorities. He was transported to Oakland County Jail and charged with attempted murder, according to online jail records. The victim was treated at a hospital with a non life-threatening stab wound near his right lung, the station reported. The woman said she passed out after drinking with her dad and woke up naked in the bed when her husband and father got into the fight. She was examined to determine whether she was sexually assaulted. A detective handling the case with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office did not return a call from the Daily News Wednesday. Forbes will focus more on long jump – Colby humbled by Sainsbury’s School Games experience NATIONAL female athlete Sanadia Forbes will focus her attention on the long jump after getting a personal best while competing at last week’s 2015 Sainsbury’s School Games in Manchester, England. The 17-year-old Forbes, who competed in the pentathlon for TCI at the last two CARIFTA Games, said she enjoys long jump more than the other events and will therefore look to pursue that in the future. “…This will be the event (long jump) that my training will be focused on, as I am more confident in this….”

Forbes travelled to Manchester for the games with Colby Jennings. Jennings was humbled by his experience and was happy with the exposure. “I must say I’m not use to running in a climate as cold as that, we really had to expand some of our warm ups and drills to make ends meet. But other than that it really gave me an opportunity to experience what these other athletes are like and some of their skills and stats. But in all I had fun representing my country for the 2nd time.” Colby, who made his national debut at CARIFTA this year, clocked

11.76s in the 100M and 23.32s in the 200M. Moving forward the 16-year-old is confident he can lessen his times in the sprints. Forbes jumped 4.96M, a substantial improvement from her previous best (4.46M). She also competed in the 100M event. Sanadia’s mother Gertrude Saunders-Forbes, Deputy Premier and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Library Services Hon Akierra Missick, Acting Director of Sports Judith Robinson-Ewing and Coach Randy Forbes also travelled with the team.

Collis leads Mitsubishi Electric to victory over Kings PAUL Collis skippered the Mitsubishi Electric team to an emphatic 69-run win over the Quality Super Kings when action in the HAB sponsored, TCI Cricket Association Summer T20 Cricket League continued last Sunday at the Downtown Ball Park. Winning the toss Mitsubishi Electric took first strike and rattled up a massive 243 runs. Collis led with an aggressive 84, which contained 13 fours and a solidary six, while Vickram John smashed 64 runs (8X4s and 3X6). Bowling for Quality Super Kings: Jawellin Sealy, Robert Johnson and Ebbon Caesar took

one wicket each. Needing a whopping 12.2 runs for victory, it was always an uphill task. And not even half centuries from Nuwan Bodhinayake (a former T20 record holder) and Ebbon Caesar could have carried the Kings home. Bodhinayake was very aggressive at the crease. All of his scoring shots were boundaries. He belted eight fours and four sixes in his 56, while Caesar hit eight fours and two sixes in his 51. Bowling for Mitsubishi Electric: Dax Bruton and Dane Ritchie claimed two wickets each.

Guerrier makes final, breaks national 200M record IT was female dominance this week when the Turks and Caicos Islands competed in the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, Samoa. Akia Guerrier and sprinting partner Helcyann Brenna Sauver held their own against some of the best juniors in the world in the 100M and the 200M. It was however Guerrier who dominated as she broke her 200M national record, before making the finals of the event. Incidentally at this year’s National School Championships both girls amassed 40 points and had to settle for joint championship honour. At the Apia Park earlier this week, they showed why they are two of the better female runners in the country. Along with the pair, sprinter Khambrel Caley and middle distance runner Ken Reyes competed. The event started on Monday morning Samoa time (17 hours ahead of the TCI), with Sauver advancing past the first 100M heats with a time of 12.92s. She placed fifth in that heat. Sauver ended her 100M campaign in the semi-finals with a 12.98s run. Both girls then competed in the 200M.

In heat one Guerrier, who will be 17 in November, finished third with a time of 25.21s, while Sauver finished fourth in heat two with a time of 26.43s. Both girls advanced to the semi-finals. Guerrier again finished third in heat one, her 25.09s broke her 2015 CARIFTA record of 25.14s. Sauver’s 26.78s did not advance her to the final. Guerrier, who entered the final in sixth place ended up with a time of 25.21s to finish in seventh overall. In the 400M Guerrier clocked 1:00.01 to finish sixth in heat one, but it was not enough for her to advance. Caley finished fifth in his heat with a time of 11.33s in the 100M, while he finished seven in his 200M heat with a time of 22.75s. In the 400M Ken Reyes finished his heat in sixth position with a time of 52.46s, while in the 800M he ended fifth with a time of 2:07.29s. Neither of the boys qualified past the first round. TCI’s Commonwealth Games Association president Alvirto “Ali” Smith and official Brenda Lightbourne travelled with the athletes.

St Monica Saints repeat as Interfaith basketball champions THE 2015 PABA Night League most points winner Kirk Adams, continued his dominance with an MVP performance which handed church team St. Monica Saints their second title in the PABA Interfaith Basketball Championships. Adams, who plays club ball with the Hustlerz, led his team with a total of 44 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists

and six steals. The competition ran from last Thursday evening to last Saturday night at the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex court. St. Monica made light work of their strong oppositions in the championship match, winning 45-22. Galvin Hall Jr. from the Rock of Jesus team won the Most Points trophy for his 56 points in the

tournament. Information from the organisers indicated that the much anticipated clash between the Politicians and the Pastors did not materialise since the former did not show up. Pastor then triumphed over a mixed team of coaches and older players. A total of seven teams competed in the Interfaith Championships.
