UK border experts assess effectiveness of immigration

BY DELANA ISLES SEVERAL weeks after lending aid in the wake of an alarming upsurge in illegal sloops arriving in the TCI, the United Kingdom has sent over several experts to further assess the situation on the ground.

On Sunday, May 13, a five member team of experts from the UK’s Home Office arrived in the Turks and Caicos Islands to examine the territory’s current illegal migration issues.

Over the next two weeks, the team will meet with several officials and will at the end provide advice to the Ministry of Border Control on how to enhance the effectiveness of the Turks and Caicos Islands’ response to tackling immigration crimes.

Among the tasks they will undertake will be to review the Immigration Department’s operational capacity and capabilities.

This is intended to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the department.

The team will also assess the detection and enforcement capabilities of law enforcement agencies and government agencies, with particular focus on the territory’s maritime capabilities.

A review will also be conducted of all current policies, operational guidance and legal powers in the

TCI. The exercise is being funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

As advised by the Government, the initiative emanated from a request made by Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson earlier this year.

The request was recently agreed to by the Overseas Territories Minister Lord Ahmad.

Since their arrival, the team has already started their rounds of meetings.

Senior government officials and stakeholder institutions including Maritime, Customs, Radar Departments, Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, seaports and the TCI Airport Authority are currently being engaged.

The Deputy Premier and Ministry of Border Control, Hon Sean Astwood already met with the team on Monday at his office at which time he articulated several challenges and solutions to immigration and national security to the team.

Back in March, when a marked increase in the arrival of illegal sloops from Haiti caused alarm both locally and in the UK, the RFA Mounts Bay was deployed from her regular tasking.

the TCI’s enforcement authorities and regional partners to boost the maritime and aerial surveillance and interdiction capability of the local authorities.

Troops from the Cayman Islands had also arrived at that time after the TCI Government requested assistance.

The RCIPS Air Operations Unit was swiftly deployed to the TCI and worked along with local authorities and the UK team to help bring the situation under control.

The operation last a few weeks and since that time has remained under wraps by local authorities with little being offered in the way of their successes or continued engagements.

However, as evidenced in recent weeks, the illegal Haitian sloops are continuing to arrive in record numbers after a brief down surge in their arrivals during the joint international exercise.

While some have been detected, there have been reports of others that have gone undetected by authorities and thus illegal migrants uncaptured.

American teen killed in jet ski accident AN UNFORTUNATE incident involving two jet skis near the Grand Turk Cruise Centre terminal has left one teenager dead.

On Wednesday afternoon (May 16), police reported the accident which occurred about 11.30am.

Deceased is a 16-year-old male from the United States who was travelling with his family.

The family were passengers on cruise ship Carnival Sunshine that had docked at the Grand Turk port earlier that morning.

Reports are that two jet skis, one of which the teen was operating, collided in the water causing the teenager to fall and break his neck. He was killed instantly.

The other person, a male relative, did not sustain any injuries.

The tragic incident has left many in shock and dismay. This

is the first recorded death for the year in the waters of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Late yesterday, a spokesperson at the Ministry of Tourism expressed their regret at the unfortunate incident.

“The Ministry of Tourism is saddened by the tragic watersports mishap involving jet skis that occurred on the island of Grand Turk on Wednesday, May 16, which resulted in the loss of life of a visitor to our shores.

“The matter is currently being investigated by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force; hence no details have been released.

“The ministry encourages anyone that witnessed the incident to kindly contact the police.”

Minister of Tourism, Hon Ralph Higgs personally expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and asked residents to keep

the family in their prayers.

He also called on the community to allow the grieving family time to contact their loved ones and to refrain from speculation.

The Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) and the tourism and maritime departments have reminded the general public of the importance of taking the necessary precautions to ensure safety on the water.

These agencies will soon come together to host a series of workshops aimed at increasing awareness.

The Ministry of Tourism and the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board will also continue to offer assistance to the family in any way possible.

Residents and officers engage in a heated confrontation

Police pepper spray a Five Cays man

BY OLIVIA ROSE A SHOCKING video of a police officer blasting pepper spray into the face of a Five Cays man on Saturday (May 12) has sparked outrage across the territory.

Jean Dor was defending a female resident against “excessive” police force when the assault happened.

The footage, which has since been circulated on several social media sites, has led hundreds to comment, with many hitting out at the way the officer handled the situation.

The Weekly News spoke this week to Dor’s older cousin John Bien-Aime who called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

He said that on Saturday afternoon officers from the Immigration Task Force were conducting a neighbourhood raid in Five Cays.

At about 1pm they on swooped down on a house and arrested a halfdressed man.

An 18-year-old female neighbour saw the events as they unfolded and pleaded with the officers to allow the man a few minutes to get dressed, Bien-Aime said.

The officers, who then turned

their attention to the woman, asked her to provide proof of status.

The young woman allegedly questioned the officers’ grounds for requesting her documents and refused to produce them.

She got into a heated altercation with the police who, Bien-Aime said, used excessive force to subdue her.

“Her mum is a Belonger, she’s a Belonger but she was born in America.

“The young girl say, ‘Listen, let the man go home and put some clothes on.’ That’s only logical.

“The police grab her and drag her just for saying that and almost broke her arm. She went to the hospital, so they put a cast on it.”

After witnessing the scuffle from across the street, Dor as well as several other concerned neighbours decided to intervene on the woman’s behalf.

They subsequently found themselves at the centre of the brawl.

“Jean saw the whole thing and said, ‘Hey, why you grabbing the girl like that? Leave that girl alone,’ and he went over to stop them,” BienAime said.

The video shows active resistance

from some residents and in one instance a woman is seen pulling her arm back from an officer.

In the clip, an officer armed with a canister of what appears to be pepper spray is yelling: “Move, move,” as he attempts to disperse the rowdy crowd.

Dor who sustained the brunt of the temporary debilitating substance was subsequently rushed to the hospital.

“The hospital say they can’t do nothing for him for the pepper spray.

They reject him and turn him back,” Bien-Aime said.

He added that the nurses told Dor he would have to wait until the burning sensation dissipated naturally.

Bien-Aime told the Weekly News that an official complaint had been made to the police.

On Tuesday (May 15) Police Commissioner James Smith in a press release said: “The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force are aware of a video circulating of an alleged pepper spray incident involving one of our officers.”

Smith said that an official complaint was not received but the video is under review.

Haitian consulate in the Turks and Caicos Islands

Petition demands closure of the Haitian consulate

BY OLIVIA ROSE A PETITION, which demands that the British government acts immediately to close the Haitian consulate in the Turks and Caicos Islands, is currently in circulation.

It was launched earlier this week in light of the recent influx of illegal sloops into the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The strongly worded petition has been published on social media sites including Facebook and Twitter.

It states: “We, the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands, have had enough of the illegal entry of persons violating our border on sloops, sea going vessels and boats from the neighboring country Haiti “In recent times the significant increase has enraged our people and caused widespread fear amongst the population.

“It is a threat to our overall security. We desire to see a cease in diplomatic normalcy with Haiti until the illegal entry stops.

“We demand an immediate closure of the Haitian consulate in Providenciales, which we believe is a tool used by illegal migrants in facilitating their efforts at illegal entry and illegal residency.

“We demand that the integrity of our borders be respected by all nations and nationalities and that any attempt to illegally penetrate our

borders is condemned by all lawabiding persons in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

It is unclear at this stage who wrote the petition.

Undoubtedly it has generated mixed reactions from the populace on social media.

While many residents agree with the rationale of the petition, others have expressed their outright disapproval.

One said: “I don’t agree to close the Haitian consulate but the Government can certainly use the office to apply pressure on the Haitian government to help control their people.

“The consulate should be made to foot half the repatriation cost.”

Another commentator wrote: “Are you seriously trying to divide the nation? Don’t you ever think long term?

“There are plenty of TC Islanders/ Haitians born here and have half parents. You guys are not considering them, are you?

“You seriously have no clue what you’re saying or doing.”

A third person said: “Why does the Haitian consulate even exist in the TCI? What purpose does it serve?

“I think we should close it immediately given the present circumstances dealing with this illegal immigration problem.”

Rational input?

What are the inputs from the rights group as to solutions for the problems?

So, are they saying that it is unhealthy for the children to be there for learning and not unhealthy for them to be there during a sports’ meet?

Some human rights groups do provide some rational contributions, however some do not care about balanced social dialogue just feelings of power.

Now it’s another matter altogether if the place is dirty and unsanitary. If not, tell them folks at the group to go kick rocks.

We need action

Unimpressed. Having not been on island since December 2017, I was stunned by the state of damaged public buildings such as the schools now I’ve returned five months later and eight months after the hurricanes.

What have our government members been doing? And the plan is only NOW being finalised!?

Goodness, the plan should have been ready and set in motion within a month of the storms!

No wonder the governor is being critical about the available funding not being used.

We voted you in to act for us (not for yourselves) so let’s see some action for the people.

Get the wheels turning

And still our Government does

nothing!

Everyone acknowledges that the post-hurricane state of government schools across the country is deplorable, not conducive to any kind of learning, and unhealthy in many cases, and yet what has the Government done to correct this condition?

Does the TCI Community College campus on Grand Turk even have running water yet?

Numerous private sector firms, foundations and individual donors have stepped up to provide furniture, computers and other educational support items, but none of these can be effectively employed until the Government repairs what were generally very poorly built structures in the first place.

We now read that at least some of the school repairs are to be covered in the budget to be debated in June.

Presuming this component of that budget is passed, there will then be the drawn-out tendering process, and finally the awarding of the contracts for reconstruction (with all the usual efforts to give those contracts to PDM supporters), so it is very unlikely that any construction will be ready to start until the middle of this year’s hurricane season, which will probably bring with it another series of delays.

So fully a year later, and yet nothing has been done!

Does anyone within our Government have even a basic understanding of the term ‘emergency’?

In spite of the Government’s commitment to “rebuild stronger”,

can we have any faith that restoration works will be done with any consideration other than the lowest price?

Although ill-considered government borrowing is always to be discouraged, particularly in light of the country’s poor financial management on the past, this Government has been truly derelict in its duty to its citizens by nor drawing on its credit reserves to get these critical public works projects underway well before now.

If this process required Cabinet meeting more often than usual, then make it happen (tough to arrange, though, when the premier spends so much time out of the country), secure whatever British approvals may be necessary, and get the wheels turning!

Bad managers

Again, it’s about managerial competence, not resources or capability.

The commission may be impassioned, but that will not execute what is needed.

Illegal sloop that arrived on Tuesday

Scores of illegal Haitian migrants converge on TCI Prompts calls for a halt to Haitian Flag Day THE TURKS and Caicos Islands Government is once again on the hook to find the funding required to repatriate scores of Haitian illegal migrants who fled their country within days of each other.

Over the course of four days, 79 people were captured by local authorities as they attempted to sneak into the TCI, via the sea.

Another sloop with an unknown number of illegal migrants arrived in the early morning hours of Saturday, but the occupants managed to escape.

Reports to the Weekly News are that at about 8am on Saturday, May 12, several people were seen running away from a sloop in the North West Point area, a popular landing spot for the illegal vessels.

A report was made to police, but the illegal migrants all managed to escape before the authorities were able to respond to the call.

Reports also suggested that two sloops had arrived and while the occupants disembarked from one, the other vessel continued to sail off in the direction of Grand Turk.

That sloop was spotted by the United States Coast Guard, which reported the sighting to local authorities.

The vessel was seen sometime around 9am on Saturday, 15 miles South of Grand Turk.

US Coast Guard officials apprehended and escorted the occupants of the boat to the South Dock Port on Grand Turk for processing by immigration officials.

A total of 38 Haitians, 29 men and nine women were later transported to the Detention Centre in Providenciales.

Three days later, another vessel was apprehended, this one containing 41 illegal Haitian migrants.

The vessel was intercepted in the vicinity of The Bluff off Providenciales on Tuesday.

According to the 911 Centre, at about 9pm on the said date, Coastal Radar officials identified a sloop, 2.5 miles from the Bluff.

The Marine Branch M/V Sea Guardian which was already on patrol successfully intercepted the sloop with 35 men and six women onboard.

The detainees were transported to the South Dock Port and handed over to Task Force members who escorted them to the Detention Centre for processing.

a marked uptick in the past few months, has prompted several residents to take to social media to bemoan the ongoing the crisis.

Many are calling on the local and legal Haitian community to show solidarity with them by not celebrate their flag day with the usual pomp and ceremony that is displayed every year.

Haitian Flag Day will be celebrated on March 18, and is a proud affair celebrated by Haitians around the world, commemorating Haiti’s struggle for freedom and independence from the French which is symbolised in its flag.

Here in the TCI, the day has always produced a host of criticisms and calls for an end to it by many Belongers who are angered at the continued influx of illegal migrants into their territory.

This year, the anger and resentment was again evident online.

One of many posts in a local community group on Facebook read: “I would encourage every single Haitians living in TCI to NOT celebrate Haitian flag day.

“Haiti been going through way too much these past couple of months to celebrate any kind of flag day.

“If that flag did so much we Haitians wouldn’t be going through so much, swimming to other countries looking for a better life.”

Under the tree

This viewpoint, from a resident Haitian, elicited equal parts anger and support from several commenters.

Another impassioned woman said: “This country gone go broke sending these people back home.

“There’s only one group of people benefiting from this, the airline companies, and please I say it again NO y’all ain’t celebrating flag day in TCI not this year, not next, not ever.”

Storm damaged primary school will not be demolished

BY OLIVIA ROSE CONTRACTORS will not be bulldozing Oseta Jolly Primary School, but instead rebuilding it using the existing foundation.

The school, which was the hardest hit during the 2017 hurricanes, is pegged for major repairs when the 2018-2019 Budget is passed in June.

According to Mark McAulay, the principal architect in the Public Works Department, a complete dismantling of the primary school is unnecessary and costly.

McAulay made this observation during a work assessment tour conducted by Minister of Education Hon Karen Malcolm in April.

He said: “There is no need for a complete demolition but there will be some demolition as you’re seeing there, sections of the roof have been damaged.

“We have to take off the roof and start from the bell beams so that we can reconstruct a proper bell beam along with hurricane straps for the new roof and so on,” he explained.

The Ministry of Education has since finalised and published the invitation to tender for repairing and rebuilding the school.

April’s tour was undertaken to ensure that works will be completed on time and are consistent with the specifications.

It saw the minister and a team from her ministry visiting Long Bay High School, Enid Capron Primary School and Clement Howell High School.

The minister explained that repairing and rebuilding the schools is a two-pronged approach since many also serve as hurricane shelters.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Wesley Clerveaux said: “Hurricane Maria and Irma really showed us that if we need to cater for a large population, we need more shelters and we can’t depend on the voluntary ‘let me use your building’ kind of thing.”

Work is currently taking place on the block that houses the computer room, kitchen and sickbay at Enid Capron Primary School in Five Cays.

However, phase two of the work at the school will only begin once the 2018-2019 Budget is passed.

The repair work at the Clement Howell High School started before the storms, however, the school sustained extensive damages during the passage of hurricane Irma.

Phase three of the Long Bay High School build is progressing on schedule and the work is expected to be completed in July 2018.

According to the ministry, invitations to tender have been published for Iris Stubbs Primary School and Marjorie Basden High School. Contracts have since been awarded and works are to begin as early as May. The drafting of the ITT for repair and rebuilding of the TCI Community College and HJ Robinson High School

will be finalised and published by the end of April.

Funding for the repair and rebuilding of Ianthe Pratt Primary School, Eliza Simons Primary School, C Hubert James Primary School, Mary Robinson Primary School, Adelaide Oemler Primary School and additional work at Enid Capron Primary School is allocated in the 2018-2019 budget.

Construction work will begin once the budget is passed in the House of Assembly.

Following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria 95 percent of the schools’ infrastructure throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands was affected.

As a result, the Government has taken the decision to rebuild more resilient schools through the territory.

BOARD member appointments, hurricane insurance, bill amendments and North Caicos ATMs were all hot topics at the latest meeting of the Cabinet.

Governor John Freeman chaired this year’s 10th meeting on Wednesday, May 9, at the NJS Francis Building in Grand Turk.

All ministers were present.

At this meeting Cabinet: -Approved the write-off of unrecovered staff advance account balances of former TCIG staff from the TCIG Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) for forwarding to the House of Assembly for approval in accordance with Section 51 of the Public Finance Management Ordinance 2012.

-Noted the decision by the TCI Civil Aviation Authority to acquire a new aviation audit data management tool subject to budgetary provision being made.

-Approved draft policy guidelines on the waiver of customs storage fees on materials imported by individuals to replace items destroyed or damaged in the September hurricanes.

-Approved the renewal of TCIG’s policy for tropical storm or hurricane insurance cover for 2018/19 with the Caribbean Catastrophic Risk Insurance Facility, Segregated Portfolio Company.

-Advised the governor to approve the draft Turks and Caicos Islander (Amendment) Bill 2018 for forwarding to the House of Assembly for approval.

-Advised the governor to approve the draft Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2018, subject to budgetary provision being made to implement the proposed changes to the Road Traffic Ordinance and Regulations being amended, for forwarding to the House of Assembly for approval.

-Approved the appointments of members to the TCI Community College Board of Governors and the Education Advisory Board/Scholarship Committee which fall under the Ministry of Education.

-Advised the governor to approve the draft Electricity (Validation) Bill 2018 for forwarding to the House of Assembly for approval.

-Advised the governor to approve the grant of a 25-year lease, with an option to renew, over Crown Land Parcel 61112/281 in Providenciales for the establishment of a beach park facility for kiteboarding and windsurfing on Long Bay Beach.

-Received a report from the minister of tourism, environment, heritage and gaming on feedback from a public consultation on a draft gaming bill.

Cabinet approved amendments to the draft bill following the public consultation subject to the ministry identifying and confirming to Cabinet that there is budgetary provision to give effect to the bill.

-Approved the appointments of members to the Prison Visiting Committee in accordance with Section 44 (1) of the Prisons Ordinance.

-Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson presented a report on steps that the TCIG is taking to remedy ongoing problems at the National Health Insurance Board (NHIB).

-Agreed a final extension to the interim appointment of Dr Hamlet Nation to act as CEO of the NHIB with effect from May 17.

-At the request of the governor, received an update from the premier on progress to appoint a new board for Invest TCI. -At the request of the minister of tourism, environment, heritage and gaming, received an update from the attorney general on the provision of ATM banking services on North Caicos.

-In response to a request by the minister of tourism, environment, heritage and gaming, the governor undertook to seek an update on the status of TCIG’s overseas offices.

-Discussed departmental budget allocations and priorities.

-The deputy governor briefed Cabinet on a meeting that she had with the TCI School Teacher’s Association on May 8.

-Confirmed Cabinet approval of policy guidelines on the waiver of customs duties on materials imported by individuals to replace items destroyed or damaged in the September hurricanes.

-Confirmed Cabinet approval of the draft National AntiMoney Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism Strategy 2018 to 2019 and AML/CFT National Action Plan 2018 to 2019.

Craig Wilson gets bail A MAN whose ex-girlfriend along with others turned his alleged gun into police after an altercation in a taxi in Grand Turk has been granted bail by a judge.

Craig Wilson was discharged and set free on bail during his second sufficiency hearing for the same crime.

Wilson appeared before Supreme Court justice Shiraz Aziz in a Grand Turk court on Thursday, May 10, and was granted his conditional freedom, while the case against gets ready to proceed to trial.

The man had been rearrested on the same allegations of firearm possession and a number of other related charges less than two hours after his case was dismissed by a judge on a technicality.

He is now expected to return to court at a later date for a plea and direction hearing.

Wilson stands accused of pulling a gun on the occupants of a car during an argument with his ex-girlfriend.

He is alleged to have dropped the gun and escaped from the car, after the current boyfriend of his ex tried to wrestle the gun away from him.

During his first sufficiency hearing, the case against was dismissed after the case bundle did not contain pertinent information from police in relation to tests done on the gun in order to proceed to trial.

However, that was rectified and Wilson was re-arrested hours later.

The alleged crime is not of a sexual nature, it is a case where the couple are accused of brutality against the minor.

Man who assaulted cops appears in court Murrick Campbell is currently before the court for the alleged assault of police officers.

The man made his appearance before the Chief Magistrate on

charges of assaulting police officer(s) twice, inflicting grievous bodily harm, resisting arrest and escaping from police custody.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force is appealing to any member of public who may have any information on these crimes. They can contact Chalk Sound Police Station on 338-5901 or make use of the confidential reporting system through Crimestoppers on 1-800-8477.

Judging from the arguments that are still to be delivered, it would appear that the jury will not get the case until sometime next week and will hopefully deliver a verdict later in the week.

The trial has been ongoing for some six weeks and during that time saw heart-breaking testimony being delivered about the young man’s tragic death during a Boxing Day incident at Club 2005 in 2014.

Last week and into this week, the defendants were given a chance to put on a defence.

The defendants and their attorneys are Charlex Bottex attorney Glenda Clarke, Lorvensky Joseph - attorney Keith James, Kurt Delancy Jr - attorney Finbar Grant, Woody Baptiste - attorney Lara Maroof-Misick and Evenson Capron - attorney Guy Chapman.

Last week the five defence lawyers argued that from their view there was insufficient evidence to move forward into the second half of the trial, and applied for a no case submission to be upheld by the judge.

The defence attorneys believe that the Crown did not present enough evidence against any of the five men for the judge to call upon them to defend.

That application was dismissed.

The men are being tried on the offence of manslaughter.

one, who has allegedly fled to Haiti, got involved in a physical altercation with Walters at the nightclub, which eventually resulted in him dying from the injuries inflicted upon him.

A doctor who examined the deceased at the time of his death, testified that Walters was stabbed through the chest and directly into the heart, twice.

He died within seconds of receiving the second stab wound, and had been rendered unconscious with the first.

Throughout the length of the trial several references were made to the man who fled to Haiti, with many suggestions being made that he may have been responsible for actually inflicting the deadly wounds.

He is said to be the brother of Charlex Bottex and Woody Baptiste.

It is on the strength of this that the five men are only charged with manslaughter and not murder.

Over the course of the trial the Crown sought to convince the jury that the men were involved

in the crime, but did not present any evidence that they had directly inflicted the fatal wounds.

Only one of the defendants has spoken to the jury on his own behalf - Evanson Capron.

Capron also called a witness Mackenson Pierre to testify on his behalf as well.

Defendant Kirk Delancy Jr called his father to the witness stand to testify.

During his testimony, the senior Delancy tried to convince the jury that he was looking at his son during that entire night, and that the younger man did not leave his side at any point in time while they were at the nightclub.

He testified that because of this he could not have been involved in Walters’ death.

Sometime next week, the trial judge will sum up the entire case for the jury, deliver her instructions and the jury then will retire to consider the evidence presented to them.

A verdict will then be delivered.

Wanted man returned to TCI on illegal sloop ON SATURDAY (May 12) Andrew Washington Parker who escaped from police custody on December 13, 2017, returned to the Turks and Caicos Islands on board one of the two illegal sloops that arrived in the TCI over the past several days.

The 28-year-old resident of Wheeland, Providenciales, was in police custody when he made a brazen break for freedom and succeeded.

The man was being held in connection with a series of very serious offences, which included several counts of rape, kidnapping and robberies, among others, when he escaped from lawful custody and fled the territory.

On Monday, police confirmed that Parker had turned himself into custody on Saturday and was taken to court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty for escaping from lawful custody.

He will be sentenced on Friday (May 18) at 2pm in a Providenciales Magistrate’s Court on that charge.

to Her Majesty’s Prison on charges of rape and a domestic dispute allegation.

It has been alleged that Parker, along with another man, were involved in the kidnapping of two Dominican women and another man at gunpoint during the summer months of 2017.

Reports are that the two men raped the women and allegedly forced the kidnapped man at gunpoint to

perform sex acts on them.

The victims were also robbed of their possessions.

While reliable reports have stated that Parker returned on one of the illegal sloops that arrived in the TCI over the past weekend, police have not officially confirmed this, and Parker has so far not been charged with illegal entry. (Delana Isles)

Ugly and filthy Dear Editor, Let’s get serious about nation building and turn our hearts and minds to addressing a very important, urgent, pressing and health threatening issue.

I am speaking of the public dump in Grand Turk.

Friends, believe me there is nothing ‘beautiful by nature’ about this site in GT. It is disgusting, ugly, illegal and a health threat.

How in the world do our leaders travel to and spend so much time in GT and tolerate, turn a blind eye and allow this situation? This is absolutely mind boggling to me.

It is not just the dump; it is the whole surrounding area spilling over into the road that is littered with white plastic bags and trash as far as the eye can see.

This location is just next to St Thomas Church. One of the oldest and most revered places in the TCI. How on God’s green Earth can our governments, PDM and PNP, have the gall to invite cruise vacationers

to pay their hard-earned money to visit GT and drive around the island and see how well we keep it - this is beyond the pale my friends.

If you all don’t believe me, please take a trip to GT and see for yourselves the regressive state of that island.

The only word that came to mind is Donald Trump’s description of a third world place.

If I were a minister of government I would be moved to contribute some of my overpaid salary to fix this situation.

I can now understand why people trash our roads and our surroundings, it’s because the Government sets the pace.

People are guided by the Government’s example and that is why the Government cannot address the issue of littering because they are the culprits.

God is certainly not pleased with the way the TCI Government pays lip service to the environment and the health of its people - they actually

continue to destroy and assault the environment.

Have any of you ever heard a word of dissatisfaction or outrage about this issue from any PNP or PDM minister?

Please let me know if you have, because most times when they spout off their mouths with this misleading statement ‘beautiful by nature’ I want to say ‘ugly and filthy’.

Where are the public health officials? Where is the minister of health? How can they be content being so overpaid and driving huge black gas guzzlers through filthy streets?

Damn despots they are - clean up your act. I am sick and tired of seeing such a cavalier attitude to waste disposal.

Only in third world countries do the governments take all the money and the environment remains trashy.

So, okay I am now set and ready to receive a flogging for being truthful!

A message to mothers Dear Editor, I am honoured on this internationally celebrated day to wish all mothers across the length and breadth of these beautiful Islands, an enjoyable, blessed and Happy Mother’s Day. As a mother, I understand the challenges of motherhood but I equally appreciate its blessings.

To be a mother is a blessing and to be God - gifted the opportunity to raise nations, we must consider embrace this vital role as a privilege.

With the pressures of life and the evolving and necessary roles of mothers to work full time and to also mother fulltime, it can oftentimes become overwhelming.

But it is so important that we achieve that balance ensuring that our children are always the centre of our world.

So many of us are achieving this balance and I salute you. I encourage you as sisters, to reach out to help others especially those younger

mothers.

So, this Mother’s Day I celebrate especially the working mom and single out our single working moms.

It is my prayer that God keeps us in his care and may he build a hedge of protection around our children and our homes.

Equally as I celebrate us, I encourage us to mother the motherless and those who need that extra embrace.

We have enough love to go around and it is incumbent on us in our decaying state to love and care for all of our children.

Motherhood is the single most important role for mankind next only to our relationship with God and if ever there continues to be a call to be mothers in our nation, it is now.

I encourage us to celebrate each other, pray for and support each other and most of all enjoy your day.

No TCI Islander should be unemployed Dear Editor, According to Annex A of the National Skills Audit (page 259), the labour force in the TCI is 23,027 of which 8,589 are Belongers.

It is also noted that the Belonger population of 14 years and older is only 9,888.

I know one of the major cries among our people is that they are unable to find a job. However, the ratio of the labour force to the number of employable Turks and Caicos Islanders is 2.68 to one, which means for every Turks and Caicos Islander who can work there are 2.68 jobs for each of them.

I am conscious of the fact that the majority of the jobs are on the island of Providenciales and so the aforementioned ratio may not be applicable to the islands of Grand Turk, Salt Cay, South Caicos, Middle Caicos and North Caicos.

If you are on the other islands and you are unemployed and you are looking for a job, then you will have to make a decision to come to Providenciales. Alternatively, start a viable business and create jobs for others on the other islands.

There are more than enough jobs

for Turks and Caicos Islanders. If you are unemployed then register with the Labour Department.

The Government must develop a labour data base. The National Insurance Board and the National Health Insurance Board have a data base respectively of all legal employers and legal employees.

One of those platforms can be used as a basis to develop a national data base recording every employee, their name, job title, salaries, length of time on the job, allowances, benefits, experience and qualifications.

The data base also needs to reflect all of students (locally and overseas) studying at a tertiary institution and their expected completion date.

This data base will allow the private sector, the public sector, Labour Department and the Immigration Department to make better decisions in terms of labour clearances, work permits and recruitment of staff.

The Labour Department needs to use the data base and work proactively with the employers to ensure that every Turks and Caicos Islander is not only employed but they are employed in the right job.

Considering that there are fewer than 9,000 Belongers in the work force, the process of ensuring that there is full employment for TCI Islanders should be easily accomplished.

I believe if every TC Islander is employed, our relationship with each including other nationalities will be improved because some of us are frustrated in that we are unable to find a job and many times, we take our frustration out on the expatriate worker when in fact sometimes they are not to be blamed.

I am aware of cases where locals have been waiting for years for a job and many times are forced to leave the TCI to seek employment elsewhere.

This is unacceptable and must be dealt with through the collaboration between the Labour Department and the private sector.

For students, the TCIG should ensure that once the graduates return home, whether they were on scholarship or not, arrangements should be in place with TCIG Human Resources Department and the private sector to have these students working on a project in TCI until a

vacancy becomes available.

If the local does not have the experience but has the academic qualifications, then let them understudy someone until they are able to do the role.

I am also aware of cases where some locals have a preference for the type of job they want.

I know I have mentioned several times on the radio show that individuals should never be on a job they do not enjoy, but if there is a particular company you want to work for and there is an opening, you should apply for it and get in the door.

Once the company sees your performance, you may end up getting your desired job in the end.

Do something, rather than complaining and being unemployed.

There are many students that are graduating from secondary school this year. Our focus on them should not be about getting a job.

Our focus should be to develop and upgrade their skills either through the TCI Community College or a vocational/technical school.

Once they have achieved their qualifications then the focus should

be on a career path.

In conclusion, if the 1,665 employers are operating profitable businesses in the Turks and Caicos Islands, one of the best way an employer can contribute to TCI is by hiring local staff in the right position at the right pay.

There is adequate capacity for local staff and work permit holders as the local staff of 8,589 cannot be on every 23,027 jobs in the TCI. If your business is benefiting by being in the TCI, then return a favour to the TCI by giving the TC Islanders an opportunity to work at your establishment.

TC Islanders, if you want a job you need to apply for the job, inform the Labour Department and when given the opportunity perform to the best of your ability.

The ball is in your court. No TC Islander should be unemployed.

She said current Education Minister Hon Karen Malcom should step up to the plate and deal with the unsuitable conditions of the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex.

A change of celebration Dear Editor, I stand in total solidarity with TC Islanders who think that the organisers of the annual festive Haitian Flag Day celebration in the Turks and Caicos Islands should either cancel it or down scale it this year.

We, the people of the TCI of Haitian descent, are also not in a celebratory mood due to the massive illegal Haitian migration problem.

It is creating havoc in our society and is definitely digging a bottomless hole in our country’s purse.

While I personally feel that Haitian Flag Day should be celebrated by Haitians around the world, in this current climate in the TCI where our country is plagued by illegal vessels entering our shores daily we ourselves in the Haitian community need to put our feet down and show that at this time our focus is primarily on spreading the news to our Haitian brothers and sisters that this is not the way to enter the TCI. We need to spread the news of the danger of illegal voyages while also advocating to them that the TCI is not the land of instant jobs and financial security

as advised and promised by those greedy, coldblooded, hateful, boat agents and captains.

For all the above-mentioned reasoning, I am suggesting that this year there’s an alternative of the usual festive event.

It would be better for there to be a solemn gathering in memory of those that lost their lives on illegal sloops trying to migrate to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It could also include a period of reflection, where speeches relevant to the issue of illegal immigration are properly discussed by major voices within the Haitian community.

As this is one of the largest Haitian cultural events in the TCI, instead of using it just as a time for a money making, partying, celebration, this year it should be used as a time to get the message across in the TCI and in Haiti to as many people as possible that illegal boat voyages are dangerous and that illegal migration to our shores will not be condoned.

The ministry came under fire last week, when the TCI Human Rights Commission demanded urgent action to protect pupils from the “unhealthy environment” of their temporary school.

Recent investigations carried out by the Weekly News highlighted the deteriorating conditions at the sports complex which continues to threaten the health and welfare of the students and teachers.

Washrooms filled with filth, mould, overhead hanging objects, littered classrooms and broken furniture are just some of the issues affecting staff and students at the facility.

The sports complex is located in the bustling Downtown area of Providenciales, and since it is not gated or fenced poses a threat to the safety of students who are often seen playing on the roadways during lunch breaks and after school.

Connolly said: “It’s a very unhealthy environment. It’s not conducive to learning and from my understanding the Human Rights Commission got involved last week and that should’ve sent a message to the minister that she needs to get on with it and do something about it now.”

Minister of Education Hon Karen Malcom when contacted by the TCI Human Rights Commission said: “I took comfort in my thoughts as I am reminded of the situation in regional countries such as Dominica which only resumed schools on January 16 due to the lack of any facility to house the students.”

Connolly said the minister should not compare the Turks and Caicos Islands with Dominica since the level of destruction was not remotely close.

“Why is she even comparing Turks and Caicos with Dominica?

We can’t compare Turks and Caicos with Dominica.

“First of all, Dominica got hit badly and we are in a better financial

situation than Dominica. We should be thankful that we had no casualties.

“I just think it’s a lame comparison and an excuse.

“I was there at the complex and as a parent I could not sleep because I would hate to know that my children would be treated that way.”

Connolly contended that while it is explicit that the reconstruction of the Blue Hills primary school is contingent on the passage of the 2018-2019 Budget, she insisted that there must be other ways to make the facility more suitable for learning.

‘Of course they can upgrade that one. It wouldn’t take that long for them to make it more comfortable for the children, they could just get some contractors and get it done.

That’s a weekend’s work.”

Following the passage of the hurricanes, 95 percent of the school’s infrastructure throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands was affected.

Commonwealth anti-corruption body to meet in Turks and Caicos COUNTRY leaders from across the Commonwealth will have the opportunity to discuss integrity and corruption during an upcoming meeting in the TCI. The Commonwealth Caribbean Association of Integrity Commissions and Anti-Corruption Bodies (CCAICACB) is hosting its fourth annual event at Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort from June 4 to 8.

It will be held under the theme, ‘Counting the real cost of corruption - Engaging everyone in the fight’.

The CCAICACB was inaugurated in June 2015 in Grenada as a regional umbrella and platform for collaborative

anti-corruption and good governance efforts, especially in the Commonwealth Caribbean.

It provides a forum for members to share and exchange regional and international best practices, standards, expertise and experiences in good governance.

Together members can address their respective challenges, a May 6 letter from the organisation and Commonwealth Secretariat said.

“Through the association members are, for example, afforded a leveraged opportunity to engage international organisations whose decisions have far reaching social and economic implications for the Caribbean governments

and their people.”

A case in point is the 2017 Transparency International Corruption Perception Index Report and its implications for the region.

At this year’s conference, any issues will be taken up and addressed fully with the relevant authors of the report.

The conference is jointly sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Turks and Caicos Islands Integrity Commission and the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The opening ceremony will take place at 2pm on June 4.

Jojo the dolphin is much loved by all, both locals and tourists alike

Jojo is recovering nicely from his recent injuries DECR again cautions boaters to be careful LOCAL veterinarians have indicated that the injuries sustained by beloved dolphin ‘Jojo’ have not drastically affected his mobility, and are already healing quite nicely.

The good news came on Thursday (May 17), following a frightening boat incident which left Jojo nursing a deep gash.

According to reports from the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) Jojo swam a little too close to a boat, sustaining injuries as a result.

“The wound, although unpleasant, will heal. However, we request that tour operators, local and resident boat operators please give Jojo the space required to heal.

“We also ask that one be mindful of all marine life before turning your vessels on,” the department said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The Weekly News also spoke with the DECR’s assistant director for law enforcement, Luc Clerveaux on Thursday for a progress report on Jojo’s recovery from his unfortunate mishap.

He said: “Although the injury is a major concern to the DECR, as communicated to you by DECR personnel, it is not the first time that injuries such as this have happened, thus we are optimistic that Jojo will once again recover from the wounds.

“Additionally, guidance from local vets have indicated that the injury has already shown signs of healing and that the injury does not seem to drastically affect Jojo’s mobility at this time.”

JoJo, a unique Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, has been living and playing in the shallow waters of the TCI since 1980.

He is one of the few dolphins

around the world that voluntarily interacts with human beings in his own natural habitat.

The much-loved marine mammal is a national treasure of the Islands, and thus there are mechanisms in place to protect him.

The DECR has also issued words

of caution for all water-users.

The department reminded all water-users that they share the marine environment with other creatures; and advised vendors, visitors and residents to take appropriate safety precautions.

Watersports operators are reminded to uphold and adhere to the regulations of the National Parks Ordinance (Ordinance 11 of 1975, as amended) when operating in a National Park.

In order to minimise incidents

related to marine animals, the DECR also urged the public to be familiar with the following regulations and guidelines prior to jumping into the water: Do not touch, stand on or kick the coral; it is a living animal and you will harm it.

Avoid kicking sand with your fins when snorkelling so that fine particles do not smother and choke living coral.

Do not remove corals, sand, shells and wildlife, whether dead or alive,

from the protected areas. It is illegal.

Do not fish in protected areas such as national parks and nature reserves.

It is illegal to do so. This includes ‘catch and release’ fishing or hunting for conch and lobsters.

Be cognisant of marine animals in the water, while operating a vessel.

Adhere to Protected Area speed limits so as to not pose a threat to water-users and marine animals, alike. (Delana Isles)

Business fairs to showcase disaster resilience

BY OLIVIA ROSE BUSINESS owners across the TCI can learn the ins and outs of building disaster resilience at the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME)’s upcoming business fairs.

As the impending 2018 hurricane season draws nearer, the DDME will host two events aimed at providing key stakeholders an opportunity to interact with the public and to witness firsthand how various agencies respond to disaster related emergencies.

In a press statement on Monday (May 14), the department said the business fairs will also be used to raise awareness in the communities, thus helping residents to be better prepared for the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season.

“This venture also encompasses the principles of public-private partnership, as it demonstrates the commitment by the private sector as it relates to disaster risk reduction across the Turks and Caicos

Islands, as well as the department’s determination to ensure all major entities are involved in its goal towards building a resilient country,” the statement said.

Director of the DDME Dr Virginia Clerveaux has repeatedly stressed the need for early preparedness.

She has also noted that many business owners invest large sums of money, time and resources to succeed and yet many of them fail to properly plan and prepare for disaster situations which leads to significant losses and failed ventures when these events occur.

The business fair will be held in Grand Turk on Friday (May 18) from 11am at the Anglican Dillon Hall and in Providenciales on Saturday (May 19) at the Butterfield Complex, Downtown, Providenciales from 2pm.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends on November 31 with peak activity in August, September and October.

It is predicted to be an above average season.

Meet Vanessa Valburn, an artist and an outspoken God-fearing young lady whose determination to succeed in her professional and artistic endeavours has been an inspiration to many who know her and follow her on social media.

Our team first noticed Vanessa’s artistic abilities last year when the now famous ‘Gilley’ (Galmo Williams) pencil drawn portraiture started making the rounds on social media by her local fan base.

The drawing, which we can factually report is a stunning likeness of the former premier, has garnered hundreds of likes and comments on Facebook, and as Vanessa herself tells us, has prompted scores of others to commission her for similar work.

From her fledgling art days as a teenager at Clement Howell High School, her talent was evident, prompting art teacher Valerie Chutcon-Warren to take Vanessa under her wing and nurture her young student’s abilities.

“I must give credit to my art teacher in high school Mrs Valerie Chutcon-Warren, she’s the reason why I am a better artist.

“She’s really the reason I’m such a good artist; she pressured me, everything I did she would say no, you can do better.

“She’s also the reason I colour, which I really need to start doing again so that people can see what I am capable of,” Vanessa told Weekly

News during a recent interview.

But the 24-year-old’s talent did not just spring up from out of the blue, rather, as most little girls with big brothers tend to do, she idolised her brother, who himself is quite talented, and thus wanted to do everything he did.

“I started drawing when I was a little kid, my brother inspired me. He does drawings too. He went to the Vancouver Film School. Everything he did, I did - he drew, I drew, he did

animation, I did it too.

“He was my inspiration for everything.

“But the passion for it…it was like when paper and pencil meet, it was like love at first sight.”

Vanessa does almost everything you can think of artistically, but painting is not really her forte.

That discipline, she said, is a bit more challenging to her than others.

“I’ve tried airbrushing, so yeah I do a little painting but I haven’t

focused on it.

“I do a bit of colouring, airbrushing and drawings, and my strongest area is portraiture, but now I’m trying to take it to the next level where I will paint an entire body.

“I’m also trying to add colour to my pieces. I usually always do it in black and white, now I want to put colour so the pictures can be alive.

“That is something that I am really working towards.”

Yes, Vanessa does sell her pieces.

She was recently featured as one of many local artists at an art show extravaganza held earlier this year at The Shore Club.

“I sold three pieces and made over $2,000 from that.”

However, she says that her work is not so consistent that she can make a living from that alone.

“With shows that are intertwined with other people, there’s a 40 percent fee you have to pay and that depends on if your drawing is sold.

“But when I did it solo, just based on my artwork, it’s different because I did portrait, whereas other people dabbled with conch shells and other jewellery and paintings, so mine has always been quite different, and I do have a lot of requests.

“Pending right now I have over 50 people waiting.”

Like most artists, she is never truly satisfied with her artwork: “I think I get frustrated that it is never good enough, even if I say it’s good enough, I would be like it doesn’t look like the person in the picture.

“So we do have that anxiety and we stress a lot, and we will never be satisfied with the end product, it’s always a work in progress, it’s never done.”

As mentioned above, one of the young artist’s most popular pieces is that of Galmo Williams, which really represents her amazing artistic abilities.

About this painting Vanessa said that she earned a very good commission.

her hip hop and cultural dancing abilities, which she has parlayed into a money-making venture.

The aspiring business woman recruits young dancers, both male and female, trains them and they all perform as a group at many local events.

But wait, hold on, that is of course not all she does the active young lady, whose motto is “Always active, never distracted”, is also quite the accomplished saxophone and piano player.

With only 24 hours in each day and a mere 365 days in a year, one naturally wonders how she finds time for all of her interests.

But she somehow does manage to fit some of her many interests in around a full-time job as an administrative assistant/ receptionist for a local company.

And now, her eyes are on the future, focused on charting a course to further develop her abilities and get to where she really wants to be.

FUTURE GOALS “What I have planned for the future is that I want to be an entrepreneur, and I want to open an institute where art, all forms of music but especially jazz is intertwined so that I could showcase local talent.”

While the future businesswoman is intent on opening her own enterprise, she is just as committed to advancing her art.

“I have explored options in Canada where I intend to go to further my business studies at the University of British Columbia, but I am still trying to find the perfect art school for me.”

She does have her eye on Italy, but is still exploring several avenues before she makes a final pick.

On the home front, Vanessa is a bit disheartened that there is not much support for TCI artists.

“What I realised is that the

media particularly, they don’t like to expose their own local art, it’s easier to get somebody internationally to do so, than someone locally.

“From my experience, a lot of people had sent my name to different media houses to contact me a while back, and none of them did, that was when the Gilley piece came out.

“So, I don’t feel like they really want to support us local artists.

“I really think that the media needs to support us, because imagine if I am here now and I am being ignored, if I go abroad and become big, then they will want to claim me, and I may not want to engage them then.

“It’s sad, not a lot of credit is given to art here and I want to do so many things. I want to create programmes where kids can come and I teach them how to draw.

“In the future when I have my institute I’m going to focus on all of that - how to draw, what to do when drawing on the computer and I am going to incorporate my music and dance into it too because I also dance and play the instrument.”

The young artist is actively looking into getting started on a summer retreat programme for children, and while she hopes this happens soon, it will more than likely be in the future.

“Summer’s coming up and there are not a lot of activities for some of the children in TCI to do, and I think that the parents could use the break too.

“That’s why I want to do an art retreat for the children, and I’m hoping to get some support from corporate society with this venture when I decide to embark on it.”

Winners of this year’s regionals in Beaches Turks and Caicos

Beaches’ top performers compete at arts comp TALENTED employees from Beaches Turks and Caicos competed for top titles at the regional finals of the resort group’s performing arts competition.

The contest was held at the stage in the French Village on May 9 and featured singers, dancers, poets, DJs, models and instrumentalists.

Winners will now go on to compete in final stage of the 2018 Sandals Resorts International Festival of the Arts in St Lucia from June 2 to 9.

Director of entertainment David Ellis said the competition was created to showcase the vast array of talents present within the company.

“Beaches Turks and Caicos realised the need to show these local talents and has created an avenue to not only perform at regional level but also to reward participating team members for their abilities.”

Lynn Delancy and Evanz Inelus emerged as top female and male vocalists as they sang their way into the hearts of judges.

And entertainment’s Deidre Davis and William Fulford strutted their way to the top by showcasing swimwear and formal attire.

Twiston Forbes won the spoken words category, while Katherine Jimenez and Eric Soriano excelled in the dance group category.

Jean Nicholas won the DJ Clash segment and Charles Hugues of the watersports department won the instrumental musical category.

This year’s judges were fashion designer Kadrica Hamilton-Wynn, real estate guru and fashionista Michelle Swann, musician Maurice Clarke, entertainment director for the Turks and Caicos Collection Hotels Davon Crowe and TCI Most Wanted DJ Shakes.

The winners of the regional final will go on to compete against the regional winners from Sandals or Beaches Resorts in Jamaica, St Lucia, Antigua, and the Bahamas for the international crown.

Tobacco dealers must apply for licences ANYONE selling tobacco products must apply for a licence to avoid a $10,000 fine or three years in jail.

Applications have been accepted since Tuesday (May 15), according to a spokesperson from the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence.

Section 10 of the Tobacco Control Ordinance states that a person shall not manufacture, import, export, sell or distribute tobacco products without a licence.

By definition, a tobacco product is a product entirely or partly made from the leaf of tobacco as raw material.

It is manufactured to be used

for smoking, sucking, chewing or sniffing and includes products such as cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff.

“Anyone who contravenes Section 10 of the Tobacco Control Ordinance commits an offence and will be subject to a fine not exceeding $10,000, or a term of imprisonment not exceeding three years, or to both,” the spokesperson said.

A second or subsequent offence could result in a fine up to $20,000 or a term of imprisonment up to four years, or both.

Accounting firm to hold North American forum in TCI A GLOBAL network accounting firm will be hosting its annual North American conference in the TCI for the first time this year.

The HLB International event will take place next week from Monday, May 21, to Thursday, May 24, at the Palms Resort.

Company CEO Marco Donzelli said he is very excited to be in the Turks and Caicos Islands to host the conference.

“We are finally coming to this beautiful country and we look forward to the valuable contribution from our presenters.

“We are also delighted to have as one of our presenters the Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands Hon Sharlene Robinson.”

Anglican church group hosts Spring Affair MEN and women who have shown a commitment to “reaching others” will be recognised during an annual church event.

The Anglican Church Women of St Monica’s, a non-profit organisation, is hosting the Spring Affair on Sunday, May 27, at St Monica’s Family Centre.

This year’s theme is ‘Intentional discipleship’ and will feature a guest appearance from Cynthia ‘Mother’ Pratt, a renowned community and youth at-risk leader from the Bahamas.

“During this time, we salute men and women from around the world who resides in Turks and Caicos Islands and have demonstrated their commitment to reaching others,” a letter from group president, the Rev Barbara Ambrister, read.

While in the TCI, Pratt will speak to and meet with various groups.

On Tuesday, May 29, she will visit Her Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk and on Wednesday, May 30, she will attend a reception at St Monica’s Family Centre.

Generosity and happiness GENEROSITY is a term usually used to describe our ability to give to something or someone without reservations or needing gain of anything in return.

We have seen this carried out in the movies that we watch, the charity organisations created by companies and celebrities alike.

However, what if generosity in its pure form not only was the practice of giving back but rather giving back and receiving in return?

Studies have revealed that generosity is not only about what can be given to others but is a balance between what is given and what is returned to the person in the act of giving to others.

Furthermore, it has been linked to greater satisfaction in life including a sense of purpose and meaning in the lives of those who engage in it.

Here are two conclusive studies that reveal how generosity can increase overall happiness in our lives while impacting the world and the lives of those around us.

So, what is it about generosity that gives us a sense of purpose and meaning?

It is important to note first that true generosity is not simply measured through dollar amounts or even time spent giving and devoting to a certain cause, rather it is more about the level of sensitivity and care one gives to said person or thing that is the true meaning and value of generosity.

For instance, in situations like monetary gifts to family, friends and even things such as tithing to the church, these are offered up as a gift.

However, where someone may be able to contribute $100 to their loved one or church tithe the amount of a $100 does not indicate how much more caring and generous the person is in comparison to someone else who can only contribute $10.

The value of generosity lies in the sensitivity and the meaning of such an act.

Lead researcher Phillip Tobbler conducted a study within Zurich that focused on the effects of generosity on others versus the generosity we place on ourselves often deemed self-centred.

Fifty people were chosen, divided into two groups and given a certain amount of money each.

One group was instructed to spend that money on things for themselves while others were instructed to spend their amount of money on things for others.

While this was done, Tobbler measured the sample’s brain activity in three distinct areas: one area where it measured prosocial behaviour and generosity, the ventral striatum, which is related to our happiness and the orbitofrontal cortex, where cost/ benefits are evaluated, otherwise known as decision making.

Once the study was completed, Tobbler reported that those who were instructed to spend their money on others reported being happier than before the experiment even began.

Whereas the control group who were instructed to spend the money on themselves felt less satisfied than before the experiment began.

In summary, we in no way must be self-sacrificing martyrs to give back nor do we need to be extremely frugal when it comes to gifting others.

Rather, being more giving in areas in our lives through time spent helping and supporting others is the moral of the story.

Generosity provides the opportunity for the give and the take that we find in the healthiest and greatest of friendships and partnerships.

Generosity not only allows for

a give and take perspective but also increases our level of selfconfidence and reduces selfdeprecation.

A study was done that concluded that when children were given praise for not doing anything unwarranted their selfesteem was unaffected.

However, when children were praised for generous acts that they did their self-esteem grew.

This simply shows that when we are doing something that warrants some level of satisfaction or praise, our selfesteem grows alongside the need to continue doing good.

What these studies reveal, is the power of the give and take in giving to others and things that are of need or important in our lives.

Giving meaningfully to something and to others inherently gives us something in return happiness, purpose and a desire to continue in this reciprocity.

It helps us to focus more on things that are positive and worth building up in our lives than the negative things we so often deal with or experience throughout life.

We will not always feel like giving at times, whether that be due to the loss of a job, a loved one or it simply being our nature.

In everything, let it be done in balance and with meaning and purpose behind it rather than an act of subservience.

Furthermore, when and where to be generous is dependent on us and further solidifies the statement that there must be balance when giving.

Boundaries are important in giving as well, as giving too much leaves us depleted of giving to ourselves, while giving too little titles us as selfish and selfserving.

Ultimately, we will find that the true meaning of generosity is in the meaning behind it and the care offered to those that are both the givers and the receivers.

Shanty town evictions ‘ethnic cleansing’ opines Rights Bahamas RIGHTS Bahamas said it now has evidence to take “constitutional action” against the government over its July 31, 2018, deadline mandating the eviction of all shanty town residents, arguing the decision was discriminatory.

Stephanie St Fleur, president of the activist group, branded the move “ethnic cleansing” saying it contravened certain articles of the Bahamas Constitution.

On Sunday, Ms St Fleur said she was surprised by the news of a deadline; however, Haitian Pastors League President Dr Jean Paul Charles told The Tribune that he had no issues with the deadline because in his view it gives sufficient time for shanty town dwellers to find alternative housing.

He said he had known of the government’s date to vacate since February.

The deadline was first made public in the Tribune’s report of an interview with Labour Minister Dion Foulkes, chairman of the government-appointed shanty town committee, yesterday.

Dr Charles said the only challenge was some families may find it difficult to financially afford what is required to rent accommodations.

This, he said, was raised with government officials. But the Minnis administration has said they are not willing to assist in this regard, Dr Charles said.

Activist Louby Georges took exception to this, saying he doubted the league asked the right questions of the government or effectively communicated the content of meetings with the government to the wider Haitian community, especially those living in the shanty towns.

“Rights Bahamas now has an evidential basis upon which to bring a constitutional action against the government for discrimination against the Haitian minority generally, it is apparent that they are simply obsessed with “eradicating” persons of Haitian descent in their “shantytown” communities.

“This is ethnic cleansing and is prohibited by articles 15 and 26 of the constitution.”

Hurricanes Irma and Maria a hint of what the future holds, CARICOM SG warns SECRETARY-GENERAL of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has warned that Hurricanes Irma and Maria which devastated many countries in the region last year were “a hint at what the future holds”.

Speaking at the opening of a meeting with the Heads of Institutions of the Community at the Marriott Hotel in Guyana’s capital this morning, he noted that the longterm forecasts for climatic activity in the region were even “more foreboding as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.”

The meeting was aimed at strengthening the co-ordination among the Institutions and the Secretariat as the Community builds resilience to encounter the new normal of more intense and frequent climatic activity. A review of the preparedness and management of the response to the events of last September has been undertaken by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to

The Secretary-General also alluded to the foresight of CARICOM’s five-year Strategic Plan which focussed on building resilience – environmentally, technologically, socially and economically.

Montserrat premier wants territory to remain on decolonisation list MONTSERRAT’S premier, Donaldson Romeo, has asked the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) to withdraw the 2012 request to have Montserrat removed from the list of territories that need to be decolonised.

The request was made during the United Nations Sustainable Development Seminar, convened in Grenada from May 9 to 11, 2018. The seminar was held under the theme ‘Implementation of the Third Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism: towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals in the non-self-governing territories: social, economic and environmental challenges.’

Romeo has explained that, by remaining on the list of territories that need to be decolonised, Montserrat will be assisted in receiving much needed support through the work of the Committee, to which the UK government will be held accountable under the legal force of the UN Charter, Article 73. Under this legal basis (UN Charter, Article 73), the UK government agrees that the reasonable assistance and development needs of the dependent territories are a priority on the UK’s development programme.

In his discussions at the seminar, Romeo highlighted some of the development challenges Montserrat has faced over the past 20 years.

On Thursday, May 10, during a bilateral session with the chair of the Committee and staff, Romeo was able to explain Montserrat’s current situation in that, despite significant funds spent over the past 20 years, the island still remains heavily dependent on the UK government and taxpayers to fund its recurrent budget, and that the UK has been the main grant agency supporting our development budget.

The premier also informed the UN that the main barrier to Montserrat achieving economic independence is the lack of and slow replacement of key, adequate and basic infrastructure

When the issue of decolonisation was raised, Romeo insisted that, for Montserrat to be decolonised, the territory would need the timely replacement of the long agreed tools to grow its economy out of dependency. These he said, included a safe harbour and sea port; an improved airport, better access/connectivity arrangements, a new hospital, the replacement of the undersea fibre optic cable, the development of geothermal and solar energy, road infrastructure, housing, among other things.

The premier added that Montserrat’s resiliency and key social welfare concerns for education, youth, the elderly, the vulnerable and health care must also be addressed. The urgent need for the road project to be completed with underground utility lines as well as the provision of housing for hundreds living in houses that are not fit to withstand hurricanes, were also highlighted during the premier’s discussions.

He noted, however, that some progress has been made along these lines but said there remains a lack of urgency, and projects too often face a ‘stop-start-stop’ pattern, which results in uncertainty and delays.

Romeo also used the opportunity to invite the Committee to visit Montserrat and to have discussions with members of the diaspora (particularly evacuees to the UK, North America and Antigua). He said this will allow them to have a clearer view of the challenges, opportunities and hopes for onward development given its economic growth strategy, key welfare needs, and the resiliency challenge.

The Committee is scheduled to have a sitting in June 2018 and the premier has already indicated his willingness to provide a comprehensive report and presentation to the Committee during this sitting in New York.

Cayman Islands: Scientists cast Bahamas deputy PM: ‘IMF won’t doubt on GM mosquito impact force us to axe more jobs’ THE depth of skepticism among scientists at the Mosquito Research and Control Unit about the success of genetically modified mosquitoes in Grand Cayman was revealed in a cache of internal emails released following an open records request.

Both Alan Wheeler, assistant director at the unit, and Fraser Allen, who at the time was the unit’s research manager, expressed serious doubts about the impact of the technology in controlling natural populations of the disease-spreading insects. They also expressed concerns about the claims being made on its behalf by British biotech firm Oxitec.

The concerns of both men appear to have contributed to government’s decision to walk back on plans for an US$8 million national rollout of the technology.

Though neither the MRCU nor Oxitec has commented in detail on their current plans, the emails suggest that a rerun of the initial West Bay trial release has been sanctioned to help government to determine if and how to use the technology in the long term.

Genetically modified mosquitos was used to control the Zika virus from spreading.

In a series of emails dating back to April last year, Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Allen suggest the unit was moving too fast on the controversial project. They consistently argue that the GM mosquito technique has not definitively proved its effectiveness in the field and that more data is needed.

Both men wrote to then MRCU director Bill Petrie and ministry of health officials in April 2017, disputing Oxitec’s data and calling for a more scientific approach to information gathering.

DEPUTY Prime Minister K Peter Turnquest on Monday said the government has no intention to downsize the public sector in response to concerns levelled by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

However, he did not rule out the possibility of a downsizing exercise as he underscored the Minnis administration has a priority to contain an increase in the overall wage bill.

The IMF has called for the Minnis administration to trim the civil service wage bill to fill the $240m gap needed to meet its Fiscal Responsibility targets.

Asked if terminations could be expected, Mr Turnquest told reporters outside of Cabinet: “No. Certainly not as a result of anything the IMF would have said.

“We are doing our own internal reviews and trying to rationalise for ourselves where we see people and service levels that we need.

“We do not have an intentional plan to downsize but rather note the concerns and acknowledge that we have to contain the growth in the wage bill overall.”

The East Grand Bahama MP further suggested the government has always been aware of the unsustainable public sector work force number.

“We continue to be cautious about hiring and trying to rationalise services trying to move people around in the public service to ensure that we are getting value for money and that people are being productive and have a career path because one of the unfortunate things about these contracts that have been given out in the last administration is that there is no career path for these people. So they were just in low paid minimum

wage jobs with no hope of being hired and no future and so we are trying to see if we can restructure some of that, rationalise it and bring the civil service back into some kind of order and put these people in productive positions so that they can have a chance at having long term employment.”

He added: “Others we are trying to train to make sure that the job empowerment programme that was initiated some time ago that that actually becomes effective because it has been at this point just a place to park people to justify giving some service or some contribution. #“We want to make that a true empowerment programme so that people at the end of 52 weeks do in fact have some skill that they can go into the public service or into the private sector and contribute in a meaningful way and build lives for themselves.”

Mr Turnquest was also asked about apparent firings under the Minnis administration.

“You say persons are being terminated, I don’t know that,” he replied.

“I know that there are constantly reviews being done, that there are contracts that are coming to an end all the time. Some are being renewed depending upon the need of the various ministries and agencies. I suspect that will continue.”

However, he could not say how many people this continuous process could affect.

WHILE Chikungunya and Zika which swept the region in 2014 and 2016 are not expected back anytime soon, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is warning residents to “gear-up for the possibility of a major outbreak of dengue fever in 2018.”

It says that’s because the preconditions of abundant mosquito vector levels still exist and increased levels of dengue are being reported in Latin America and elsewhere.

The Trinidad-based CARPHA says it is imperative, as rainy season begins in many countries, that efforts to stop mosquitoes breeding be stepped up, especially for pregnant women and vulnerable populations, noting that dengue remains a global health problem and, like Zika and Chikungunya, there is no specific treatment for the disease.

“Although dengue is not new to the region, we need to gear up for the possibility of a severe outbreak.

This virus has been increasing in frequency over the past 30 years.

Receptacles like tyres and drums are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Reports from Latin America elsewhere show markedly increased dengue in recent months, so we in the Caribbean can expect it will soon be here,” CARPHA Executive Director, Dr James Hospedales said last week in observance of Caribbean

Mosquito Awareness Week 2018.

US blocks United Nations call for independent probe into Gaza deaths THE United States blocked a United Nations (UN) Security Council statement drafted Monday that called for an independent investigation into the deaths of at least 58 Palestinians along the Israeli-Gaza border.

Monday’s violence followed several weeks of mass protests in the Israeli-blockaded territory of Gaza, which is governed by militant Islamist group Hamas. The unrest coincided with the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, a Donald Trump administration directive widely condemned by the international community.

“The Security Council expresses its outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest,” a draft of the statement read, which was seen and reported by AFP. “The Security Council calls for an independent and transparent investigation into these actions to ensure accountability.”

The U.S. has used its veto power 43 times against UN resolutions concerning Israel.

More than 2,400 people were reported injured as Israeli Defense Forces fired live bullets into crowds of protesters, the majority of whom were unarmed. At least eight children under the age of 16 were killed, according to Palestine’s envoy to the

DR Congo Ebola outbreak spreads to Mbandaka city THE Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has spread from the countryside into a city, prompting fears that the disease will be increasingly hard to control.

Health Minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga confirmed a case in Mbandaka, a city of a million people about 130km (80 miles) from the area where the first cases were confirmed earlier this month.

The city is a major transportation hub with routes to the capital Kinshasa.

Forty-two people have now been infected and 23 people are known to have died.

Ebola is a serious infectious illness that causes internal bleeding and often proves fatal. It can spread rapidly through contact with small amounts of bodily fluid and its early flu-like symptoms are not always obvious.

The 2014-16 West Africa outbreak, which killed 11,300 people, was particularly deadly because it spread to the capital cities of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The boy was airlifted to a hospital in Syracuse where he was put on life

The couple allegedly beat the boy several times with a belt, causing his head to hit a hard floor surface that left him unconscious, court documents cited by the station say.

The child was unable to breathe on his own and had no brain activity, according to documents.

The man, whose name has been redacted, gave a jailhouse interview in November saying he met up with Paddock outside a sporting goods store after posting an online ad to sell schematics to convert semiautomatic guns to fire automatically.

“Somebody has to wake up the American public and get them to arm themselves,” the man said Paddock told him less than a month before the

T.I. is one of the biggest names in hip-hop, with multiple platinumselling albums and singles, production credits and roles in films like “ATL” and “American Gangster.”

Henry County Deputy Police Chief Mike Ireland said the rapper was arrested around 4:30h. after he got into an argument with a security guard. Media reports say the Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Clifford Harris, had lost his key and the guard wouldn’t let him into the community.

Ireland said T.I. and a friend were arrested. The rapper has been

released on bail.

His attorney, Steve Sadow, said in a statement Wednesday that the rapper was “wrongfully arrested.”

He said the guard was asleep when his client arrived at the guardhouse and it took “some time to wake up the sleeping guard.”

Sadow said T.I. identified himself and sought entry, but the guard refused. The rapper contacted his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, who confirmed that her husband should be allowed inside the community.

“The guard continued to refuse entry without justification,” Sadow said in a statement, referring to T.I. as Tip. “Words were exchanged and apparently the guard and/or a supervisor called the police. When the police arrived, they were not interested in hearing Tip’s side of the story and wrongfully chose to end the situation by arresting Tip.”

The couple also have a two-year-old daughter, Luna.

Jones shared in the doc that the traumatising experience caused Houston to question her own sexuality and perpetuated her drug problems later in life.

“It made her question her sexual preference,” Jones said, according to Entertainment Weekly.

“I think she was ashamed,” the former assistant added of why Houston never told her mother, Cissy. “If Cissy had known, she would have done something about it, because Cissy loves her children.”

The “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” singer died in 2012 at the age of 48 after an accidental drowning in a bathtub.

Entertainment Cumberbatch to play Vote Leave supremo in Channel 4 Brexit drama BENEDICT Cumberbatch is to play the man who masterminded the Vote Leave campaign during the Brexit referendum in a new Channel 4 docudrama.

The actor will play Vote Leave’s campaign director Dominic Cummings.

The two-hour drama, which has a working title of Brexit, has been written by political dramatist James Graham.

Channel 4 said it would “explore the myriad tactics employed to swing one of the most surprising referendum results in living memory”.

Vote Leave was the official “out” campaign during the 2016 EU referendum and was backed by cabinet ministers including Boris Johnson and Michael Gove.

Most of the drama’s action will take place during the build-up to the vote and “will explore the anatomy of a modern data-driven election campaign, and the divisive figures driving it from the shadows”, Channel 4 said.

The objective of this position is to manage the HFC infrastructure and services including satellite dish farms.

Larry Nassar: Michigan State University to pay $500m to abuse victims MICHIGAN State University has agreed to pay $500m (£371m) to gymnasts who were abused by ex-team doctor Larry Nassar.

The deal was announced by a California law firm representing 332 victims of Nassar, who assaulted women and girls under the guise of medical treatment.

The deal does not include any non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements, according to a statement from lawyers and the university.

According to the lawyers, $425m will be paid to the claimants, and another $75m

would be set aside for any future allegations against Nassar, 54, and the university.

The lawyers’ statement does not address how the money will be allocated to each of Nassar’s accusers.

“This historic settlement came about through the bravery of more than 300 women and girls who had the courage to stand up and refuse to be silenced,” attorney John Manly said in the statement on

Wednesday.

He added that it is their “hope” that “the legacy of this settlement” will serve to eradicate abuse in US sport.

The university’s board chairman Brian Breslin also issued a written statement saying: “We are truly sorry to all the survivors and their families for what they have been through, and we admire the courage it has taken to tell their stories.”

Sports Interational NBA Draft Lottery: Phoenix Suns awarded first overall pick

Mohamed Salah: Liverpool forward’s boots become museum exhibit LIVERPOOL forward Mohamed Salah will be honoured with his own exhibit in the British Museum’s Egyptian collection.

The Egypt international has impressed this season, winning the Premier League golden boot with a record 32 goals.

His boots will go on display in the run up to Liverpool’s Champions League final match against Real Madrid.

“The boots tell a story of a modern Egyptian icon, performing in the UK, with a truly global impact,” said exhibit keeper Neal Spencer.

PHOENIX general manager Ryan McDonough was on stage moments after the NBA draft lottery ended, talking about the future of the Suns and mentioning how they had the best odds of picking No. 1 overall.

Manchester City manager signs new deal to 2021 MANCHESTER City manager Pep Guardiola has signed a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2021.

In the case of 17-year-old Rashun Richardson at Hillcrest High in Dallas, it was. Turns out Richardson was really Sidney Bouvier GilstrapPortley, a 25-year-old man who graduated from high school seven years ago, according to Dallas Independent School District officials.

Gilstrap-Portley was arrested Friday and faces a charge of tampering with government records.

Court records show he was booked into Dallas County Jail last week and has been released on bond, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Dallas schools spokeswoman Robyn Harris told the Morning News that Gilstrap-Portley posed as a refugee from Hurricane Harvey, knowing that the district was allowing evacuees from the storm to enroll even if they weren’t able to provide all the documentation normally required.

“He took that as an opportunity to gain access to our schools,” Harris said. “He was fairly savvy to be able to utilize that type of position,

“This is an adult infiltrating high school,” Hinojosa said. “People

should take this seriously. No one should play it off like that. This is much more than that.”

The mother of a 14-year-old girl who attends Hillcrest has stated that her daughter dated the person she believed was Richardson. The woman told NBC-5 in Dallas-Fort Worth that her daughter said she kissed the man but did not have sexual relations with him.

“I’m upset, frustrated, angry and sad at the same time,” the woman told the Morning News.

“If it’s happening at Hillcrest, then it could be happening somewhere else. People need to know. It could have gone differently if he had other intentions to hurt her or to traffic her.”

As Richardson, Gilstrap-Portley was sometimes seen hanging out with a young woman, who was thought to be his sister, and her infant child. Hillcrest principal Chris Bayer told NBC-5 police since have told him that the woman and baby are Gilstrap-Portley’s girlfriend and child.

The player known as Richardson led Hillcrest to an 11-10 record and was named the District 11-5A offensive player of the year.

Conchorers register back-toback PHL wins THE Grace Bay Resorts Conchorers recorded victories against the Grace Bay Car Rentals Islanders and the Scotiabank Red Wings when action in the Provo Hockey League continued last Saturday at the Graceway Sports Centre.

The Conchorers, who started the day on six wins in the Novice Division, defeated the Islanders 1-0 after a Brock Pollon’s second period goal.

Reggie Monuma led the team against the Red Wings in the second clash.

Monuma opened the scoring in the first period before Jake Haggie answered in the second.

Isaac Turner took the Conchorers ahead, before Monuma’s second goal sealed

BANTAM DIVISION The most lopsided victory was an 8-1 win by the Coco Bistro Bruins over the Turkberry Hurricanes in a Bantam Division clash.

Max Scholar and Clayton Thomas led the attack with three goals each.

Skippings says help needed to take track and field to the next level in the TCI PRESIDENT of the Turks and Caicos Islands Amateur Athletics Association (TCAAA) Edith Skippings feels that the TCI is ripe with talent, but more help is necessary for young athletes to reach their full potential.

In an invited comment, she told the Weekly News that: “There are so many opportunities for us to shine even brighter. We have so many talented athletes here in the TCI; we just need more assistance in our training programmes for the athletes in all of the islands.”

Skippings said that with proper training our local athletes can reach their peak.

“This is one of the areas where the Minister of Sports and also the Director of Sports had pledged to give us more assistance… if that is done, I can assure that track and field can reach the highest level with our local athletes here in the Turks and Caicos.”

At the 2018 CARIFTA Track and Field Games, TCI finished ninth out of 28 teams.

TC Aquatics Swim Club in Bahamas for second meet THE TCI Aquatics Swim Club are back in the Bahamas for the second meet since their formation last year.

The team, which is led by Coach Lenin Hamilton, will compete in the May 18-19 meet after support was received from IGA Graceway, Mrs Judy Munnings-Deveaux of Emerald Coast Homes in Nassau, DNA Financial Services Ltd, Bugaloo’s and the Duncanson & Co. law firm.

Hamilton said that the team includes the trio who represented the club last month and two new faces.

Lenin Hamilton Jr will compete in the eight and under boys; Lenika Hamilton will swim in the eight and under girls and Tajhari Williams the 9-10 boys.

The three will be swimming the 50M freestyle, 50M backstroke, 50M breaststroke, 50M butterfly, 100M and 200M freestyle and 200 IM. Aniya Musgrove-Garland (8 and under) will be swimming 50m freestyle, while Jamarii Parker 9-10 boys will be swimming 50 and 100m freestyle.

SURFside swim team for Bahamas club meet SEVEN members of the SURFside Ocean Academy Swim Club, some of whom are national swimmers have travelled with national coach Jessica Soderquist for this weekend’s Mako Aquatics Club Invitational Swim Meet in the Bahamas.

According to a press release from SURFside, its swim teacher, Morgan Luker said: “We do not have a 25 or 50 meter pool in our country, so our kids need to travel to other islands and countries in order to gain competitive swimming experience, and pool training skills that they cannot receive on island.

They also need proper qualifying

times for certain meets and so can only do this by using these larger competitive pools and timing systems.”

Luker added that: “Since its initiation only three years ago, our swim team kids have been swimming, swimming and swimming. They are using any pool time they can get in the

earliest of hours and using the ocean for endurance training when there is no pool time available.

They are all inspirational examples of what hard work, commitment, and dedication are all about. They deserve to have as much proper pool and competitive experience they can gain through these off island swim meets.”

TCI Flamingos whip BVI in historic rugby clash THE TCI Flamingos whipped the British Virgin Islands for their biggest-ever international rugby victory to date.

The first ever rugby clash between the two nations, was truly a onesided affair at the Meridian Field last Saturday with several players scoring in the 63-12 win.

The national players also extended their unbeaten streak to 4-0 in their latest game. Of these clashes, two were recorded last May (victories against the Dominican Republic (2415) and the Bahamas (26-19).

TEAM WIN Team captain Sean O’Neil, who praised the development of the sport on the island said it was an excellent team win and that the entire squad contributed to the victory.

“With over half the squad being made up of players who have come through our under 19 program or started playing rugby here, it shows how we have grown over the last 10 years and the success we can continue to have.

It was great to have so many supporters out for the match and even better to have players like David Been, Kadis Simmons and Lincoln Outten playing starting roles in front of the friends and family.”

The closeness on the Americas Rugby rankings (TCI 21 and BVI 25) was not reflected on the field.

However, the BVI side was not going to go lightly into the night and five minutes later after some poor decision making by the TCI, the BVI team found themselves camped on the TCI try line. After several attempts, the BVI pierced the TCI defense and gained five points back. After slotting the conversion, the score was TCI 10- BVI 7. The TCI continued to dominate play and on the 22nd minute rising TCI star Kadis Simmons was the recipient of a skip pass that allowed him to outpace his BVI rival to notch the 3rd TCI score to extend the TCI lead to 20-7. At the 35-minute TCI scrum half Mark De Fraine could not be restrained from scoring the 4th try.

Luis Turbyfield tapped one thru the uprights to bring the score to TCI 22- BVI 7. Trevor Walkin, one of two Grand Turk players on the TCI squad, got on the scoreboard to make the score TCI 27 BVI 7 at halftime.

The second half did not open well for BVI as Kadis Simmons quickly scored his second try and any hopes of any early BVI resurgence was snuffed out by an unstoppable TCI team. The BVI squad struck back thought with a try resulting from TCI defenders committing too many men to the ruck on the goal line. It was not until nearly the 60th minute, however before the TCI squad was able to move the scoreboard again with Sean O’Neill finding the try line after the TCI pack had dominated the BVI forwards on the BVI line for several phases of pick and go play. TCIRFU President Keith Burant was overjoyed with the victory and the development of the TCI side.

The TCI team had eight of the team selection coming from the TCI youth programme, which means the plan to develop young players and feed them into the Men’s National team is bearing fruit.
