First Caribbean unveils their new and improved Provo branch – lauds TCI economy

BY DELANA ISLES A NEW and improved facility of the CIBC First Caribbean International Bank was officially unveiled at the Leeward Highway location in Providenciales on Tuesday (February 28).

Cutting the ribbon to the modern building was Deputy Governor Anya Williams, assisted by the bank’s Chief Executive Mark Brown, Managing Director Mark St. Hill and other dignitaries.

The $1.5M remodel saw major works being carried out to the interior of the building with several banking machines being added.

Delivering very brief remarks at the opening ceremony were Brown and St. Hill.

St. Hill noted that the location now sports greatly upgraded automatic banking machine (ABM) services with three new ATMs and a drive through service for those who wish to bank on the go.

He said that four main banking options will be available from the newly improved location, namely: retail banking with the local mortgage centre, business banking,

business banking, corporate banking, and a local operations centre.

“The improvements here mirror what we have been doing and will continue to do across our business footprint in the region, and we are doing all of this with one goal in mind – a better client experience,” the director stated.

He further promised that the institution will continue the process of transforming its retail operations as well as the reconfiguration and enhancement of their premises.

MODERN BANKING Speaking with the media following a tour of the remodeled building, St Hill commended the local population on adopting more modern banking options.

He said that the population here has adopted the alternative channel – with the Leeward branch being the most highly used in terms of volume.

“TCI is the number three performing country branch right now, and the Leeward branch is currently ranked number five,” the Director said.

number one, and according to St Hill this was gauged on all of their regional branches performance in banking areas such as loans, insurance, consumer loans, mortgages, credit to life and some other products.

He added that this speaks very positively about the economy of the Turks and Caicos Islands, which he said seems to be rebounding.

Asked about one of the chief complaints about the First Caribbean locations in Providenciales – that of ATMs being constantly down, St Hill said this is because of the high usage of the machines.

“When you come and you see it down it’s because we are constantly restocking, so we have to restock it every time it is down, and that is why it went from three machines inside and one outside, to four inside.

“We are having a challenge right now with the drive through and the

vendor is bringing in a part now for us to fix that.”

However, he said that this is actually a good problem for them to have.

“Because we have no problem deploying ABMS, this is extremely good. What it says to me is that as a society (TCI) you have adopted modern ways of banking and that is where we want to change the region, we want the region to adopt these methods,” St Hill observed.

Over the past 18 months, the bank has opened four new ATM machines across the country, bringing their total to 11.

TCI FINANCIAL REGULATION St. Hill is also quite pleased with the financial oversight and regulations here in the TCI. “A lot of Caribbean countries are not very good at business facilitation

and business facilitation here is good, when we were launching our home and auto insurance it was the regulators here that sat with us and navigated us through it and that is business facilitation.

“So I have to give kudos to the FSC here, because of that it became a domino effect in going through the region, so business facilitation is very important.”

He noted that countries need to have a very strong regulatory environment.

“I have seen where when you take your eyes off of that you get things called the IMF and whole lot of things coming your way.

“TCI is not there, so I think we should be happy that there is a level of fiscal discipline here.

“I think this is one of the few economies that is in a surplus for seven straight years, so there is a give and take,” St. Hill added.

The National External Examinations Committee and Ministry of Education will host the 20th Annual National Academic Awards Ceremony on Friday, March 3, 2017 in Grand Turk at the H. J. Robinson High School commencing at 10am under the theme: Nothing is Impossible; ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. The top achievers from the Turks and Caicos Islands writing CXC and IGSCE will be honored for their impressive performances according to the Ministry of Education.

At the awards ceremony several categories of awards to stupendous students who wrote external examinations will be presented.

Gov’t to encourage and support home security systems – as home invasions mount

BY DELANA ISLES PREMIER Sharlene Cartwright Robinson on Thursday (March 2) said that her government will soon be putting legislative measures in place to facilitate home owners installing home security systems in order to help curb the crime situation in the country.

The Premier’s remarks came as she was also sending out yet another appeal to residents to help the police.

“I really want to appeal to Turks and Caicos today the street knows who is doing a lot of what is happening, make no mistake about it.

“We can blame the police if the police were victims or witnesses to every crime, but the street is fully

aware of who is doing what.

“Some parents are fully aware of who is doing what and the truth is, before you become a victim, before your family becomes a victim, say something.”

Cartwright Robinson’s impassioned appeal for information is certainly not a new one – not new to the PDM Government, the previous administration, or even the various police commissioners (both past and present) - yet, over the years the public has seemingly turned a deaf ear to the repeatedly to calls for assistance to the police.

On Thursday, the Premier sent out a reminder that members of the public can and should make use of the Crime Stoppers hotline.

“If you don’t want to be named,

we have the crime stoppers tips; there is a hotline that you can use, you need to be a part of the solution.

“We all have challenges, the government will have challenges in providing the resources that we need to assist, but we are going to do the best with what we have.

“The police are going to be challenged, even with the shortage of resources, but their greatest challenge beyond that is the people not willing to cooperate,” she stated.

Again, she reminded the populace that many within the communities know who the perpetrators of most of the crimes that are plaguing the country are.

The Premier also cautioned members of the public to stop making victims of themselves – to secure their belongings when left in their motor vehicles and to secure their homes “One of the initiatives that we are going to roll out soon is to encourage persons to have their own home camera systems.”

“At the end of the day we are all part of crime fighting, and we need to begin to mend fences with the police, as it were, if there is a standoff… we are also going to be helping and leading the way on that.”

Meanwhile, she stated that as it

relates to the twelve-point crime plan which her government unveiled some weeks back – there will soon be legislation, resources and polices on what the government can implement.

Social media usage The Premier also reiterated her call for people who utilize social media platforms to be responsible in doing so.

“I want to appeal to you, please, it is the most insensitive thing to send around a video of a dying human being, and I am going to go on the record by saying that it doesn’t matter what the allegation is, he is a human being.

“It is distasteful, it is not who we are as a people.”

Cartwright Robinson was referring to a video footage of a suspected thief Ensley Rolle, who was stabbed to death last week when he illegally entered the apartment of a man.

Rolle was killed by the man who was awakened by the sounds of an intruder in his home, leading to a scuffle and Rolle’s death.

Top TT lawyer to defend former Premier SENIOR COUNSEL Reginald T.A. Armour of Trinidad and Tobago has taken over the defense of former Premier Michael Misick.

Armour’s appointment comes a few weeks after Misick’s former lawyer – Queen’s Counsel Ralph Thorne of Barbados – resigned from the case.

Armour is a Senior Counsel at Marie de Vere Chambers in Port

of Spain, and was admitted to the Trinidad and Tobago Bar in 1980.

He also now serves -since September 2016 - as chairman of the CARICOM Council of Legal Education (CCLE) and also holds the post of president of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago.

Armour has also served as the legal adviser to former President George Maxwell Richards

PREMIER Sharlene Cartwright Robinson has revealed that the new budget for the country will be later than her government had expected.

At a press conference on Thursday (March 2), the Premier explained that on assuming office on December 20, her government learned that the budget process had stopped, and in the last few months they have had to re-start the entire budget process and finalise it.

She did assure that they already have the recurrent budget – which will see spending in the area of law enforcement, policing, primary health care – with major focus on policing and the prison.

“You will see quite a bit of support in these areas from this new government,” the Premier stated.

She added that the Financial Strategy and Policy Statement (FSPS) has already been sent to the United Kingdom.

The premier explained that document was recently amended to include a European Union budgetary support, as the government had just signed the EDF11 which gives the country budgetary support over forty months, and which began in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Premier stated that there will be a House of Assembly meeting sometime this month, during which time they will present a provisional warrant that will allow the government to continue to function until the budget is actually passed.

The government is constitutionally bound to pass the budget by July, the Premier assured, stating that her government is on track to do that and that the country can expect it much earlier than the constitutional deadline.

“We are going to have some additional capital projects that are desperately needed,” Cartwright Robinson said, pointing out that some major infrastructural works

will soon be carried out in order to give the country a “facelift”.

These works, she said, will be carried out in several islands.

She added that the budget is not comprehensively a PDM budget, as they are rolling over several projects that were approved by the previous administration.

She noted that her government intends to move forward ambitiously with a number of projects that have been pending since 2015.

The Premier also updated the press on the government’s legislative agenda for the next four years.

The agenda has already been presented to the Attorney General’s chambers.

Cartwright Robinson further noted that her government is supporting the police strongly in the legislative agenda, with other much-needed support to the financial services, planning legislation, environmental legislation and youth work. (DELANA ISLES)

12-STOREY DEVELOPMENTS THE Court of Appeal has ruled in favour of 12-storey developments in Providenciales and the Strata Corporation may be appealing the matter to the Privy Council, depending on the written judgment.

Should they count their loss at this stage and allow the project to proceed?

They should give up

Of course they should give up. We live in a democracy where Planning Laws are determined by the elected Government of the day, not unelected competing developers.

While I personally have mixed feelings about the height, the condo buildings will have only 2 apartments per floor which is much lower density than many of the existing condos that have 5 and 7 floors. This will be a significant long term boost for the economy and the development of the country. Not everyone, of course, wants the country to develop, but prefer for it to stay as it is. They have every right to voice this opinion. As I said, this is a democracy.

Don’t stop fighting

No, do not stop fighting this, 12 stories, who are we? New York? Miami?

It would be a mistake

It would be a mistake to stop fighting this irresponsible project however it is understandable that the cost of the legal fees has to be taken into consideration. I for one am very grateful that they are trying to stop this and hope they can take it to the Privy Council.

I am sure others are also willing to assist in donating funds if necessary to this cause. If this 12-storey development goes ahead then you will open the floodgates and the beautiful by nature and incredibly appealing low density development of our stunning beaches will all reclassify into third rate, crowded, and less appealing run of the mill vacation resorts.

Losing our focus

No. Fight it. We are losing our focus in TCI. What we need are some hotel rooms. Yes, we want high clientele, big spenders, but we always can drive business on the mini getaway traveller’s. All these condos, villas and suits we have already, is enough. No real hotels

here, other them Airport Inn .There is no need for a 12-story building here.

Why not fight it?

That is clearly a matter for the strata corporation(s). If they have the deep pockets, why not? If they do not appeal to the Privy Council or if they do appeal and lose, then we can no longer market the TCI as a high end destination. High end destination and persons on the beaches packed like sardines does not go hand and hand.

Stall this skyscraper

This skyscraper law needs to be stalled as long as possible. Next step, Privy Council. Then on to the highest authority in our land, the people.

They did not vote it in but they voted out the same PNP group that created the law without consultation with the voters and their families.

A terrible law

This is a dangerous zoning law. If it is upheld our Beautiful by Nature slogan and environment are gone forever. Skyscrapers all over Provo and some day on Bambarra Beach and Lorimers. The prices the resorts charge will have to come down and so will the taxes we collect. A terrible law.

Only lawyers will make money

Only one thing is guaranteed if pursued further; the lawyers will make money. Only litigate over money and never over passion or principal. Not quite to advocate the wishes of Dick the Butcher in Shakespeare’s Henry VI “the first we do is kill all the lawyers”. But Hogarth’s cartoon in the late eighteenth century caught it perfectly. It depicted a cow. It’s head being frantically pulled by the plaintiff. It’s tail desperately being tugged by the defendent. Meanwhile sitting on a stool pulling at the udders is the lawyer milking it! Seriously, it will

probably go ahead. Again, for economic reasons. The Government needs a stimulus, even if the benefits won’t percolate down for some time, as happens with projects. As to compromising our “ Beautiful by Nature image”? Looking at our crowded highways, lack of border control, shanty towns and crime, we’ve rather lost that now. It will set a precedent for further high storey projects, but sadly, that’s inevitable now!

Not like Miami

Do we really want to look like Miami, and end up with thousands of low-dollar tourists, rather than hundreds of high-end spenders?

12-stories mean voting for being inundated with folks looking for a deal. Too sad that those in power for the last 15 years have ignored every single recommendation to stick with our current high-end tourism product.

King Midas touch in reverse

The project is doomed. Washington Misick has been promoting the hi-rise idea. His history of business failures with no success is well known. It would be better if the project did not go forward to lose the investors millions and taint our reputation which our new government is just beginning to reform. The Misick family and their cronies have the King Midas touch in reverse. Everything they touch does not turn to gold for them or our people. Instead, it fails and turns sour.

A niche market

We have a tiny niche in a big market that ought to be maintained, not destroyed. The VAST majority of visitors say they come here because

there are no high rise buildings, and the place is not crowded. Instead of this foolishness, we should be investing in kids, teaching them trades and arts and crafts and agriculture, so that the country is not dependent only on hospitality.

Don’t watch Dubai

They need to have the proper and necessary research to be certain that with the low lying land, the hurricane force winds and shears, if the building will be able to withstand it. A 4-5 hurricane could level that building. We can’t watch Dubai. They don’t get hurricanes.

It will be our loss

The people need to take over the matter. We can not let a US corporation deal with the future of our country. The loss is not for them, it is for all of us living on a Beautiful By Nature island.

Against all of us

This 12 storey developments will work in the long-term against all of us, we are the ones who should not allow the project to proceed.

The Ministry of Health to provide mobile healthcare to residents of Providenciales

Students from the Extraordinary Minds Learning Centre are beneficiaries of a new playground

BY DAISY HANDFIELD STUDENTS at the Extraordinary Minds Learning Centre benefited from a newly built playground, on the school grounds on Aviation Drive, in Providenciales.

The initiative was courtesy of the team at the Blue Haven Marina who saw the need for the playground, so they took a team to the school on February 25, 2017 to commence the building process.

After a long day of working, the team managed to complete the playground that same afternoon.

General Manager for the Blue Haven Marina, Adam Foster, told media houses last weekend that this initiative was part of an international project put on by the IGY Marinas, an unprecedented team of marinas in the Caribbean and the Americas.

Mr Foster went on to explain that on that day all of the marinas within the IGY group simultaneously worked on projects to give back to the community that they operated from.

“We chose Ashley’s Learning Centre to improve the outdoor area and give the kids some room to play outside; have some shade and improve the environment for them. I came and visited here and

I saw the children and despite their difficulties, they were some of the happiest children I’ve seen,” he said.

Thanks to the team, the playground area now has a picket fence with two picnic tables so that the children could have their lunch comfortably outside; along with a sandpit for them to play in and grass so that it looks like a garden.

Angela Williams-Valerio Founder of the centre said that two years ago she started the centre when her daughter was denied acceptance into several schools, giving her no other options but to bring in a special needs teacher to work one-on-one with her daughter.

She said: “A few other parents heard about it and we came together and monthly we paid the teacher and whatever was need to at the school.

Last year we had a fundraising event and Blue Haven Marina was in attendance.”

She said that following that encounter, a team visited the school.

During the visit they saw the need for the playground and offered to construct it for them.

Located in down town Provo, Ashley Learning Centre provides educational opportunities for children with Autism who are unable to access public school education.

ONE OF the immediate goals of the Minister of Health, Agriculture and Human Services, Hon Edwin Astwood, is to increase the accessibility to healthcare for residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Minister expressed these sentiments during a press conference at the Town Hall Centre in Providenciales last Friday.

He said that he plans to take healthcare to the vulnerable communities in Providenciales, through a community outreach program, as early as this week.

“We are developing a very robust community outreach program and through that program we are going to take healthcare to the community by assessing people where they are.

The whole perimeters of this is to take healthcare to the vulnerable communities in our country. We

want to make sure that everyone has adequate healthcare,” Hon Astwood said.

During the press conference Elrisa Gardiner, senior public health nurse, gave a brief synopsis of what should be expected during the program.

She said: “The idea of the community visit is to go in each community with a team, starting with Providenciales, we will be walking from house to house and assessing each household to see what we need to do for them and to see if we need to refer them to any other organization or unit with the Ministry of Health or any other organization that is nongovernmental.”

She said that the idea is to conduct a health and wellness assessment of these communities to provide background data for the Ministry of Health so that they would know what has to be put in place.

Gardiner added that the project

will start in Providenciales, but in the future will continue on to the outer islands.

She said that community visits were currently going on in the outer islands, but just for the elderly folks at the moment.

Medical officer within the Ministry of Health, Dr Victoria King, said that the Ministry had been looking forward to this initiative for a good while and that it was extremely important for staff members within that ministry, to get out in the community and go to the people.

“We plan to check their blood pressure, sugar and identify any complaints or diseases that these individuals may have,” she said.

Dr King added that the Ministry of Health plans to partner with the Department of Social Development and non-government organizations to put dimensions in place to provide adequate healthcare for everyone.

Gov`t exploring all avenues to collect and protect its revenue – Tourism Minister

BY OLIVIA ROSE MINISTER of Tourism, Hon. Ralph Higgs says the Government is exploring all avenues to collect and protect its revenue.

Higgs made this comment during a brief exclusive interview with the Weekly News on Wednesday March 1.

Tax evasion and avoidance are problems which seem to have defied solution, and have bedeviled the Turks and Caicos tax system for many years; however, the new Tourism Minister says his administration is working assiduously to reverse this debilitating issue.

His sentiments come after owners of the Regent Grand recently voiced their concern about the long running tax evasion practice of some villas, condos and private homes in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The call for greater regulatory practices is one which has been made for a number of years, most recently last week by the Chamber of Commerce and the Hotel and Tourism Association when they met for the first time with the new Government.

Premier Sharlene CartwrightRobinson at a press conference on Thursday (March 2) disclosed that her government has already sent legislation aimed at regulating these businesses to the attorney general’s chambers for implementation over the next four years.

She said: “One bit of legislation that will be of interest to the people is the regulation of the RBOs. “ We want to do that from two standpoints and that is to make sure that we are not losing revenue and to make sure that the industry

is regulated but also in the issue of national security because we want to know who is renting where and given the recent unsettling environment as it relates to crime we want to know where people are in this country and it is important to know where tourists are in these stand alone villas and heavily bushed, not well lit areas, we want to be able to protect our product and protect tourists who continue to rent under the RBOs. “I don’t want to give the impression that all of them are illegal or unregulated but it is an industry that has to be managed and managed better.”

These establishments are accused of not paying their accommodation taxes to the Government and there is a call for them to be regularized as private rental properties.

A well-placed source at the Regent Grand resort in Grace Bay recently told this publication that there are American unit owners who have been engaged in the practice, and are undermining the hotel business in the country.

In a recent press statement, both the TCHTA and the Chamber, stated that an area identified was that of private home owners using platforms like Airbnb, Vacation Rentals By Owner (VRBO) and other online sites to secure bookings.

This, they said is an emerging business which needs regulating as it can be a revenue source for the administration in the collection of taxes.

Currently there are several hundred rental properties in the TCI listed on these websites most of which are rented at exorbitant prices, with many of them not paying any taxes.

This is not a problem that plagues the TCI only, as many other Caribbean tourism destinations are affected by rise in online vacation home rental platforms.

The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association has since published a resource guide supporting the TCI’s effort to level the playing field through the taxation and regulation of the sector and its engagement in public and private sector tourism development efforts.

According to industry news last year, the region’s leading umbrella tourism private sector organization is counseling the Caribbean’s 32 national hotel and tourism associations and governments to work together to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapid rise of the online vacation home rental industry and other sharing economy businesses being fueled by hosting

platform companies like Airbnb and Uber.

“Airbnb, in particular, recorded more than 25,000 listings in the Caribbean as of February 2016 and is projecting significant growth this year. Destinations such as the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Cancún, Martinique and Barbados feature the most listings on Airbnb with continued growth projected throughout the entire region.”

CHTA president Karolin Troubetzkoy has noted that the sharing economy made possible by these hosting platforms is happening whether, whether it is embraced or not.

He pointed out: “This leaves us with two options: we can allow it to develop as an untaxed and underregulated market and lose out on tremendous opportunities or we can bring all the players to the table to work out solutions to the benefit of all concerned parties.”

Only last month ,the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the region’s tourism development agency, and Airbnb, whose community marketplace provides access to millions of unique accommodations, signed a landmark agreement to develop a set of policy principles and recommendations on the sharing economy for Caribbean governments and other stakeholders.

Under the agreement, both organizations will share data and studies with policymakers about the positive impact of the sharing economy in the region; identify ways to make it more inclusive; and broaden the benefits of tourism to non-traditional actors, attract new stakeholders and focus on providing amazing and unique travel and

cultural experiences to visitors.

This partnership agreement will also provide to the CTO an economic analysis of Airbnb’s positive impact on local economies.

By reviewing Airbnb’s aggregate data, key stakeholders will be briefed on the value of a peer-topeer review mechanisms; at the same time Caribbean government officials and other stakeholders learn about the long term benefits of the sharing economy and home sharing in particular.

“The CTO is establishing a basis for mutual cooperation with Airbnb’s. It is important for us to examine all aspects of this important segment of the sharing economy.

We believe that by clearly understanding Airbnb’s massive influence in capturing consumers’ interest in unique accommodations we will be in a position to properly advise our members and to allow the Caribbean to achieve the goals of year-round profitability, visitor satisfaction and sustainable tourism development,” Mr. Riley said.

Currently, there are 41 thousand listings across the Caribbean and a typical host in the Caribbean earns approximately US$3,900 per year.

The agreement will also help to identify new ways to market the Caribbean as a region: One Sea, One Voice, One Caribbean and grow the tourism industry.

With this cooperation agreement, Airbnb will continue promoting tourism and highlighting Caribbean history and culture.

The strategy focuses on the diversification of the tourism industry and the expansion of the economic opportunities for the Caribbean people.

Washy accuses premier of EDF 11 “flip flop’ LEADER of the Opposition, Washington Misick has accused the Premier of not supporting a key initiative of the overseas countries and territories (OCTA) European Union funded programme.

The accusation came just shortly after Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson accepted the chairmanship of OCTA last month in Aruba.

Misick, in a statement to the press this week, said that Cartwright Robinson accepted the role of Chair of the organization at an OCTA conference in Aruba, where she also signed programming documents commissioning the official start of the European Development Fund (EDF) 11 program.

Misick stated: “Surprisingly, although the Premier Hon. Cartwright-Robinson accepted the Chairmanship of the OCTA and

kicked off the EDF 11 Program, she didn’t inform the forum’s attendees that less than a week before, her government withdrew its support for the EDF 11 program.

“On February 17, the CartwrightRobinson Government sent out a public notice canceling the tender for the “Consultancy for the Turks and Caicos Islands Government’s EDF 11 Education Sector Reform Strategy, Tender Reference Number TR 16/77”.”

He added that having a consultant working on the deliverables is a key requirement of the EDF 11 program, and the country would become ineligible for the grant if it did not have one.

He further stated: “Realizing that she would have had the distinction of being the first Chair of the OCTA whose Government didn’t support its

programs, Premier Hon. CartwrightRobinson’s government on February 24th, rushed out a slightly amended version of the original EDF 11 Tender document, and in doing so, canceled its own cancelation of the EDF 11 Tender document.”

The opposition leader stated that since 2012, under the PNP Government, the Turks and Caicos Islands was the recipient of two EDF grants – EDF 9 and EDF 10 (which focused on strengthening and improving the business sector) – with a total funding of €13.7m (US$14.5m).

The EDF 11 program, which includes additional funding of €14.6m (US$15.5m), was to have focused on reforming and strengthening the education sector, and the previous PNP government had already advanced it to the

programming and financing stage.

Misick noted that within a relatively short period of time the PNP government had completed and closed the EDF9, as well as the full implementation of EDF 10.

Misick added: “The EDF

programs have benefitted the country tremendously, and I am proud that the previous PNP government’s accomplishments in rolling them out have been recognized by the Deputy Governor.

“I was surprised and disappointed when I learned that the current Government had withdrawn its support for the EDF 11 program.”

He further opined: “Thankfully, even if just to save face with the Premier becoming the new Chair of the OCTA, they have reversed that position and now support it.”

The party leader said that assuming that the Government does not change its position again on the EDF 11 program, and which he strongly encouraged the Premier not to do, the country should again benefit from the great strides made by the previous PNP government.

GT woman charged with perverting the course of justice in Kevino Smith`s murder probe

SIPT judge calls in sick – trial delayed again THE Special Investigation and Prosecution Trial (SIPT) has been pushed back even further as Justice Paul Harrison has reported sick.

On Monday, February 27, when the trial was set to resume after a three week break, the court was informed that the judge would not be attending, as he had fallen ill.

Harrison’s absence will continue until March 20, when the trial will hopefully resume.

The 78-year-old Harrison has been the subject of much controversy due to his advanced age, when his appointment to the trial was first made in 2012, and as recent as 2015, when Misick filed an application with the court to have him removed. That application was unsuccessful.

However, while the judge’s medical condition does raise questions yet again about is age

and agility to preside over such a tedious and long running trial, his absence does stand one person in very good stead.

That person is Michael Misick, chief defendant.

The delay gives Misick additional time to bring his new lawyer – Reginald Armour - up to speed with the progress of the hearing over these last fifteen months.

As previously reported, Misick’s senior counsel, Ralph Thorne, a Barbadian, abruptly resigned from the case on January 30, causing a sudden halt to the proceedings.

Filipino man on $20,000 bail for killing intruder A FILIPINO national was placed on US $20,000 bail after killing an intruder who attempted to rob his Kew Town home on February 22, 2017.

The 38-year-old is scheduled to return to the police station on March 27, 2017.

In a police press statement issued this week, police said that contrary to what is posted on social media, the man in question has not been charged, and that the decision on whether to charge him will be recommended by the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Ensley Rolle, a 29-year-old Bahamian man with Turks and Caicos Islands roots, was killed on February 22, 2017 during an alleged home invasion in Kew Town, Providenciales.

Police say that Rolle was stabbed to death by the homeowner during the attempted robbery.

According to a police press statement following the incident, at around 3:20 am, Police and Emergency Services were dispatched

to an area in Norway, Kew Town after a report was made that a person was caught inside of a home.

31-year-old Lavina Griffith of Grand Turk has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of Justice in the ongoing Kevino “Bah” Smith murder investigation.

According to a Police statement on (Friday 24th February), detectives of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force have formally charged and cautioned the woman.

Griffith who appeared in the Grand Turk Magistrate’s Court on (Thursday March 2nd) pleaded not guilty to the charges laid before her.

Last month three Grand Turk women ages 19, 28 and 53 were rearrested on suspicion charges.

However, the two other females who were previously arrested have been released from all bail obligations.

Prior to their arrest, 3 males on Grand Turk and Providenciales, ages 24, 25 and 31yrs were charged with the murder of Kevino Smith of Grand Turk.

The men appeared in court on February 3 where the matter was heard by Magistrate Tanya Lobban Jackson in Court 1 Providenciales where Krishna Penn, Conrad Thomas Jr and Lamar Griffiths were arraigned.

Penn is being represented by Laura Maroof; Oliver Smith is representing for 31-year old Lamar Griffiths and Smith served as attorney in lieu for Conrad Thomas Jr when his lawyer, Keith Thomas, could not appear on his behalf.

The men will appear in the Grand Turk Supreme Court for a sufficiency hearing on April 7.

It has been two years since 25-year-old Smith went missing after a reported heated confrontation Kevino Smith was reported missing by his family on Friday 6th March 2015.

After continuous and extensive searches, his body was found on Thursday 16th April in the Breezy Brae area of Grand Turk by members of the community.

Young Smith’s family, especially his mother Patsy Smith, have been highly critical of the handling of the investigation, regularly writing on social media, that her boy had been forgotten.

Smith’s dismembered remains were found in Breezy Brae, Grand Turk, in late April 2015 following an aggressive police search. And it was in July that police finally confirmed that the remains discovered were indeed that of young Smith.

Subsequent to the discovery of his body, several suspects have been arrested on suspicion and some are currently on bail for numerous offences which include murder, conspiracy to commit murder and perverting the course of justice.

The police, in a statement on their facebook page, said: “We are determined to establish what happened to Kevino and how he came to lose his life, which we hope will bring some closure and small comfort to his family.

Police warn against making false reports

BY DAISY HANDFIELD THE 911 operator has been receiving fictitious reports in the past weeks and police are warning residents against calling and making these false reports.

Police press officer, Kevin Clarke, is advising the general public to take this matter seriously and not to call the 911 emergency phone line with phony stories.

Clarke shared this concern with media houses last week, where he also stated that making false reports is a crime and that individuals should respect the country’s laws.

“We receive a lot of bogus reports on a daily basis. These bogus reports are not being told to the media and it is important that persons know that the 911 system is an emergency system. When individuals call and make fake reports, we might have people calling to make an accurate report; this can cause a slight delay,” Clarke said.

Clarke made reference to a report recently about an alleged shooting in the Leeward Palms area, in Providenciales.

He added that reports like these are what hinders the police from carrying out their daily patrols.

He said: “We had an incident where police responded to a report of a shooting and when police arrived on the scene, nothing of the sort had taken place. This makes the work of the police very difficult, because that time could be used to do something else, like patrolling our streets.”

Those calling the 911 operators are expected to be respectful, said Clarke.

“We want people to not play or interfere with the 911 operators.

Sometimes we have children picking up the phone, who disrespect the 911 operators. We have people who call and curse at the operators as soon as they answer the phones.”

He said that he is not asking individuals to stop calling with tips and information that could lead to capturing criminals, but he wishes those abusing the 911 system to stop doing so.

The officer also took the opportunity to remind members of the public to continue to be aware of their surroundings, especially those who arrive home late at night.

Men on trial for Sunny Foods robbery and shooting THE FOUR men charged and remanded for the April 10, 2016 robbery and shooting at the Sunny Foods supermarket are currently standing trial for the crimes in the Grand Turk Supreme Court.

The length of the trial – which is now in its third week - was cut down significantly due to a culling of the witness list by the prosecutor, and it is now expected that the jury will soon get the case and deliver a decision sometime soon.

The defendants in the trial are: 27 year old Ewing George who is charged with robbery, and inflicting grievous bodily harm; while the three others 33-year-old Reginald Presil, 32-year-old Fritzer Prevalus, and Wilbert Almonor, all face charges of conspiracy to commit robbery.

The three charged with conspiracy to rob are Haitian nationals.

The case against the men stemmed from an armed robbery and shooting of a local security official and ex-superintendent of police Albion Williams outside of the Five Cays store in Providenciales last year.

Witness accounts of the brazen daylight robbery stated that the assailants were waiting for Williams – who is also the owner of Tag Security Services – to exit the store with the bag of money he normally collects from that location.

When he came out of the supermarket the men allegedly knocked him to the ground, grabbed the bag of money, fired three shots into Williams’ back and made good their escape.

The men were arrested in June last year and were charged with the crime.

George was arrested and charged later in the year.

Ministry of Health donates $150,000 for the development of the halfway house – Construction to begin as early as next week

BY DAISY HANDFIELD A CHEQUE for US $150,000 was presented to the Turks and Caicos Drug Prevention Foundation by the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Human Services last Friday which will go towards the development of a Half Way House in Providenciales.

The halfway house will be a centre for helping former drug addicts, prisoners, psychiatric patients, and others to adjust to life in society.

A press conference was held at the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Human Services headquarters at the Town Centre Mall in Providenciales to formally present the cheque to Dierin Longmire, president of the TCI Drug Prevention Foundation.

Hon. Edwin Astwood, the Minister of Health, Agriculture and Human Services gave brief remarks before the presentation.

He stated that drug usage is a serious problem in the Turks and Caicos Islands and that the development of the halfway house in Providenciales was a major step in targeting the issue.

“We know that there is a problem with persons with substance abuse. I do not think that there is any family in the Turks and Caicos that has not been touched by drug use and drug misuse. Therefore, I believe that this

initiative is very important to all of us out here in the Turks and Caicos Islands and all of our families,” Astwood said.

President of the Turks and Caicos Islands Drug Prevention Foundation, Dierin Longmire, expressed gratitude for the hefty donation, adding that the construction process would begin as early as next week.

She said: “This donation is beyond words. I am so grateful because this

has been long overdue. Since 1995 we wanted to do something about the drug and alcohol issues present in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I am so grateful for my committee and for Government for supporting me. I am extremely happy and I thank all of you and God for giving me this opportunity.”

The president added that one of the focuses will be working with individuals going through the pre-

sentencing stage and those going through the pre-release stage.

“If you looked at the statistics on Her Majesty Prison, 95 percent of the inmates there are for drug and alcohol related issues. We want to bring them out and offer them an opportunity to take a shorter sentencing in the prison, to be extended in the Half Way House so that we could help them reintegrated into society and help

them to find jobs. Alcohol and drug addiction is a disease; it is not a willpower issue,” Longmire said.

The Half Way House will be located on the South Dock road and will be suitable to accommodate up to 25 patients.

The president explained that if necessary, bunk beds can be added to accommodate additional patients.

Communication Minister attends world mobile congress in Barcelona, Spain

BY OLIVIA ROSE MINISTER of Communication, Hon. Vaden Williams, attended the 12th edition of the GSMA World Mobile Congress Ministerial Programme in Barcelona, Spain.

The Groupe Spéciale Mobile Association (GSMA) Ministerial Programme, which started on February 24, provides a critical forum for convening Governments, International Organizations and Industry leaders to share knowledge and debate the key regulatory and Policy issues that are shaping the future of mobile.

The Programme aims to celebrate the positive socio-economic impact mobile has played in both developing and developed countries and identify the policy levers needed to further extend this impact.

The GSMA Mobile World Congress is the place where mobile leaders to gather, collaborate and conduct business.

The annual event provides the world`s best venue for mobile industry networking, new business opportunities and deal-making.

Mobile World Congress includes a world-class conference featuring visionary keynotes and thoughtprovoking panel discussions; an exhibition with more than 2,200 companies displaying the cuttingedge products and technologies that define the future of mobile;

the world’s best opportunity for mobile industry networking; and the annual Global Mobile Awards ceremony, which recognizes the most innovative mobile solutions and initiatives from around the world.

The 2017 edition of Mobile World Congress attracted a record 108,000 visitors*, an increase of 7 per cent over the previous year, the GSMA reported today as the show came to a close.

Visitors from 208 countries and territories worldwide attended this year’s event, held at the Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuïc venues in Barcelona.

Bribes cost that developer the bribe and then a huge legal fine. We see the sore thumb in our minds eye from the plane as it maneuvers over Provo. Passengers could see it as another Miami and wonder why they visited TCI. Has and will extra stories attract tourists...we doubt it. It is no surprise that the court ruled to dismiss the appeal from two normal developers who came in to build their business and contribute to our economy with respect to our

The court had no choice. We have no clue about the personal opinion of the judge but she had to uphold the law. A law put in place by the previous PNP government.

Why did the PNP turn their back on environmental issues under the leadership of a physician expected

to appreciate nature and disrespect congestion, its inherent pollution and its impact on environment ?

“Bigger and Better” was the PNP slogan of a government cabinet now in court. More dough in their private pockets and no concern for the long term future of the islands.

Islands with an ecology that supported their ancestors.

The facts are obvious. After years the actions of the PNP deterred development and the 12 story law was their last desperate one seat legal attempt to get some investor to build something.... anything !

We hope the PDM strikes down that law. File a hold and then ask the people to vote on it ? Otherwise place an order for tall fire trucks !

The death rattles of PNPs celebrating the victory of a law that might never pass a public election are now heard from PNP opposition. A leader singing his swan song who makes more trouble than his tiny win deserves. Washy and spokesman Royal positioned to never win an election again.

Royal placed last in the 2012 at large election and Washy beat newcomer Robbie Bean by 21 votes stolen from Bean’s PDM by certain “independent” candidates who undoubtedly voted against Washy in December.

Now my fingers join my sore thumb. Fingers sore from writing about their mess.

Last Thursday evening the ninth annual Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association’s (TCHTA) Star Awards celebrated the dedicated individuals “who go above and beyond the call of duty” to deliver stellar service to our visitors.

The opulent event, held at the Tropicana Show and Supper Club, was well attended by tourism and hospitality industry partners,

nominees and supporters.

Attendees enjoyed an entertaining evening and dinner as they saluted the nominees and winners that keep our tourism industry growing.

Welcome remarks from TCHTA’s Executive Director Stacy Cox, Director of the Tourist Board Ramon Andrews and The Hartling Group’s Karen Whitt, all hailed a bright future for TCI’s tourism and lauded the island chain as a strong destination, while thanking every industry worker who makes its success possible.

Cox said: “The pursuit of excellence in our sector can never be obtained without the continued dedication and commitment of every worker. Excellence is also, of course, about hard work. It is the hard work of everyone sitting here tonight that propels us forward.”

Other highlights of the evening included a fashion display by ‘House of Jeritt’ models, performances by Clement Howell High School Choir and Wesley Methodist School dance group and a captivating rendition of the British Anthem and National Song by Chrystal Charles.

With strong competition and over 165 nominees in the eighteen categories, it was mentioned that judges had difficulty deciding the winners as all candidates were outstanding.

Youth listening tour kicks off on March 14

BY DELANA ISLES ON MARCH 14, the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sport and Library Services in collaboration with the Youth department will launch the first in a series of youth listening tours across the Turks and Caicos Islands.

On Thursday (March 2), the subject minister, Hon. Josephine Connolly was joined by Director of the Youth Department Jasmine Parker and national youth council member, Ronley James to outline the government’s youth policy.

Minister Connolly noted that the main objective behind the tour is to give the youth of the Turks and Caicos Islands a voice.

“We said we would do it within the first 100 days, and I have done it. Myself and the youth department are very enthusiastic about involving our youth in government policy and decisions that affect them.”

She assured that this initial tour will be the first in a number of initiatives to engage the local youth to ensure that they have a voice in the development of their country.

Within the next four months the team will be conducting youth listening tours, which will be both formal and informal around the islands, and according to the

minister, the youth talk series will be instrumental in instigating programmes and policies.

The youth affairs director stated that another component of the tour is to establish the social issues in the country that youth are struggling with.

She said that there will be two official launch dates – the first will take place on March 14 at 4pm at the Gustarvus Sports Complex in Providenciales and the second one will take place on March 17 at the Helena Robinson high school auditorium in Grand Turk.

After the official launch ceremonies, the formal listening sessions will commence with groups such as Rotaract, Young Corporate Alliance, church youth groups and high school students.

The age group targeted is 12 to 29 years of age.

Parker said that they will also be hosting intimate listening sessions with about 30 or 50 youths so as to foster a better understanding of issues that affect youth in the country.

She said that there will also be a week of informal listening tours whereby the tour officials will go into communities in order to talk to youths who are hanging out on neighbourhood blocks, under trees, and on road corners to see what is

She noted that the drive behind this particular part of the tour is to get an understanding of what is causing these young people to be hanging around the communities, so that the department and the government at large can put measures in place to cut down on this.

Parker also assured that the youth series will also take place in South and North Caicos, and that a detailed tour schedule with dates, time and locations will soon be made public.

At the end of the tour, the public will be made aware of the issues and initiatives that the government is hoping will come out of the tour.

That will be done by way of a public symposium, Parker said.

Youth councilor, Ronley James is therefore encouraging every young person in the designated age group to take part in the listening tour, as he said this is an ideal opportunity for the youth of the country to regain its voice.

BY DAISY HANDFIELD SCORES of Dominicans residing in the Turks and Caicos Islands, wore their blue and red shirts last Saturday as they celebrated their country’s 173rd year as an independent nation.

Just about every Dominican resident that was out during the event carried either a flag or something that represented the Dominican Republic.

Dominicans, as well as local Islanders, gathered in the parking lot of La Familia restaurant in Providenciales for a line-up of activities.

Restaurants behind the Ball Park sold a variety of Dominican dishes and drinks, which included Dominican fried pork chop, plantain, salami, Dominican patties and of course Dominican beer, Presidente.

by Dominican girls, performances

by Dominican artists who reside in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

President of the Dominicans United Committee, Candido Moreno said that even though these Dominican nationals were miles away from home, they celebrated this event as though they were at home.

He said: “This is a big time for us, every year we acknowledge the fact

that our country is now free and we are not ruled by any other country.

Our country makes its own rules and own laws now.”

The president described the Turks and Caicos Islands as a home away from home.

One Dominican national told this publication that although she was away from home, she was enthused to see the unity among Dominicans in the TCI and it made her feel as though she was at home in her

country.

February 27, 1844, marks the Dominican Republic Independence Day, celebrated annually during Carnival.

After the Dominican Republic gained its independence from Haiti in 1844, Juan Pablo Duarte, father of the revolution, had envisioned a strong democratic republic that would protect its citizens from the dictatorial rule which had marred the country’s history.

Nominations officially open for the national honours and awards program

BY OLIVIA ROSE NOMINATIONS are now officially open for the third annual National Honours and Awards program, and the public is being urged to submit their suggestions.

This comes as the National Honours and Awards Committee (NHAC) hosted a press conference at the Hilly Ewing building in Providenciales on Wednesday, March 1 to update the public on the upcoming awards ceremony which is expected to be held in October this year.

The program recognizes outstanding locals who have made a praiseworthy contribution to the country`s development.

Speaking at the press conference, President of the Committee Willette Swan said the honors and awards form depicts a description of the achievements, merits and service a recipient should possess.

The category of awards are: The Order of National Hero, The Order of Turks and Caicos Islands, The Patriotic Award, The Long Service Medal, The Meritorious Award and the National Young Achievers Medal.

He said: “The honors and awards consists of two orders, one award, and three medals, the first order is the order of National Hero, it may be granted to an islander for extraordinary and outstanding achievement in merit in service to the islands or to humanity, the person may have the title “The Right Excellent” and may wear the insignia

of the order.

“We`ve named only one National Hero, the Order of Turks and Caicos is the second Order , it may be granted to an islander who has served with distinction in a field or discipline ,the recipient may have the title “The most Honorable” and the letters “OTCI” after his name and may wear the insignia of the order.

“The Patriotic Award comes in tow categories, the gold for Turks and Caicos islander and silver for a non- Turks and Caicos Islander ,it maybe granted to someone who has demonstrated a keen sense of national consciousness and rendered exceptional sacrificial service to the islands and the people and of the islands.

“And the silver to a non-islander for demonstrating a very high regard for national integration and for philanthropic contribution to the development of the islands.”

He explained that the recipient of that award will have the title the “The Much Honored” and the letters “PA” after his name and may wear the insignia of the order; the committee has so far named eight nominees.

Swan said: “The Meritorious Service medal may be granted to an islander who has been giving sacrificial and meritorious service in a field that is inherently challenging or has performed a brave or humane act whether in the islands or abroad.”

Swan further pointed out that there are specific guidelines which must be followed to ensure that the nomination process is fair and

“It is of utmost importance that you nominate persons that you believe are worthy to receive an award.

“Additionally, a nominator must match the person that is nominated to the award since the committee cannot nominate him or her for a different honour or award.”

It was noted that the process must gain public confidence, trust and respect; and as such, special care should be taken to ensure the honours and awards process is carefully managed, and more importantly, to be seen as fair and balanced.

The guidelines which clearly define and outline eligibility and criteria need to follow a framework carefully crafted, studied and adopted as intended. There must be no room

to accommodate subjectivity and discretion.

The committee must honour their role paying particular attention to judgment, and discharge their duty with integrity and dignity.

Forms are available at the Premier’s Office in Grand Turk and Providenciales, The District Commissioners Office and on the Government’s website.

The completed nomination should be delivered in a sealed envelope clearly marked: National Honour and Award Programme or any member of the National Honours and Awards Committee on or before June 30, 2017.

The form only introduces the nominee. Information regarding the nominee’s work, service and merits should also be added.

“Ensure that you provide all the information, in whatever form that information takes, to support your reason why your nominee should be so honoured,” Swan said.

“Whether documents, newspaper clippings, letters, testimonials.”

The Ordinance provides that an honour or award may be revoked if the awardee allows persons to whom the award was not granted to wear his insignia or commits an act the committee sees as bringing the honours system into disrepute.

Honours and awards are a particularly important means of recognition that can show not only how much the contribution of individuals are valued, but also can provide inspiration to others to perform to the standards.

Survivor of 1972 Munich Olympic massacre to speak at Brayton Hall Hundreds are expected to flock to Brayton Hall on Thursday, March 16 to hear the story of a man who survived the first live-broadcasted terrorist attack.

For more than three decades, Alon remained tight-lipped about his harrowing experience. But in recent years he decided to break his silence and share his experience with others to keep the story alive.

“It was too emotional to talk about,” Alon has said. “The memories were harsh realities that I had to face on a daily basis.”

When Dan Alon left his native Israel to participate in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games at the age

of 27, he was the country’s top fencer and had dreams of returning with gold medals. However, the Munich Massacre cut that dream short, and he found himself on a flight home with the coffins of his friends and teammates instead.

The terrorist attack, captured in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film Munich, claimed the lives of 12 people, including 11 members of the Israeli team and a West Germany policeman. The tragedy was later blamed on a terrorist group called Black September.

This is not the first lecture of its kind that the local Jewish community has organized. A few years ago, the group hosted Rena Finder, a Schindler’s List survivor, drawing an audience of over 400 people to Brayton Hall and leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.

Health Minister visits newly constructed mental health home

BY DAISY HANDFIELD THE MINISTER of Health, Agriculture and Human Services, Hon Edwin Astwood visited the newly constructed Mental Health Home in Grand Turk on Monday.

This building represents the completion of phase one of the project and is designed to accommodate up to 12 low risk clients. The objective of the home is not only to provide accommodations for persons with chronic mental illnesses, but to also allow them to receive the therapeutic support and psychiatric interventions necessary to maintain their mental health.

Phase two of the project will commence shortly and is expected to be completed by February of next year.

This phase will include the construction of two additional buildings.

This final phase will allow for the accommodation of 11 more persons and will include a unit to manage persons who are acutely mentally ill.

It is envisioned that once complete, this home will also allow clients who are currently being treated overseas to return to TCI and receive continued care and management.

Hon Astwood said that the services that this home will offer much need

services for people who suffering from mental illness and will serve as support to their families.

“I am elated to see the completion of phase one of the construction of the Mental Health Home, located at the Old Grand Turk Hospital compound. Phase two is scheduled to commence later this year,” the Minister said.

At a Ministry of Health press conference last Friday in the Town Centre Mall in Providenciales, Dr Alicia Malcolm, the Director of Mental Health and Substance Dependence reiterated that once the home in fully completed, it will be able to provide therapeutic support for persons who have longstanding mental health problems.

She said: “We always know that every now and again someone may relapse and become acutely ill, but there are also persons who perhaps for the remainder of their life will need ongoing support. For those who have minimal family support or are not really able to live on their own, they would be placed in that home.”

Dr Malcolm added that there are currently several TC Islanders in rehabilitation centres in Jamaica who the Government is looking to return to the Turks and Caicos Islands to continue their treatments at the Mental Health Home.

Dynamic Christian couple to reach TCI youths at national youth workers symposium THE TURKS and Caicos Islands will welcome a dynamic couple in Gospel Youth Ministry from March 9-11, 2017 at Community Fellowship Center; and the experience is free and open to individuals who want to be better equipped for the work of youth development.

Kim and Shari Babcock are a husband and wife team who have exhibited that they believe, “God has awesome plans and purposes for our kids, not just for when they are older but for right now.”

The Babcocks are not only well able to impart the key skills on how to reach the Youth for Jesus Christ, but they can expound on their own work where they are empowering youth at their ministry in Argentina.

According to a release, Youngsters from 12-18 years are leaders at King’s Castle, which allows young people to reach out to other young people about the Gospel.

where the Babcocks will present and allow for Q&A. On Friday March 10, 2017 the National Youth Workers Symposium hosts a Youth Concert featuring the country’s most celebrated gospel singers with guest artists DJ Ray and Matthew Jennings, hosted by Almando Rigby.

On Saturday March 11, 2017 the National Youth Symposium continues with a half- day session from 9am to 12 Noon where there will be more practical use of strategies including break-out sessions.

On Sunday, March 12, 2017 the public is welcomed to join morning worship at the church at 9am, where the Babcocks will minister the word of God to the congregation.

Pastor Handfield said the teaching is so flexible that anyone can benefit from the instruction, but cited that teachers, youth workers, volunteers and social workers would certainly be empowered by the sessions. How many teeth have you lost?

BY DR. MARK OSMOND Tooth loss can be used as a major predictor to somebody’s life expectancy, according to new research. The research, published in Periodontology 2000, found that the number of teeth we lose can be a key indicator to our quality of life and that those who have a full set of teeth when they are 74 are significantly more likely to reach 100 years old.

The study shows that there is clear evidence that tooth loss is closely related to ‘stress’ during a person’s lifetime. This includes a person’s specific social, emotional, economic and educational experiences as well as health issues such as chronic disease, genetic conditions,

nutritional intake and lifestyle choices.

Evidence showed that people who had lost five or more teeth by the age of 65 were also more likely to suffer from other serious health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis which could severely limit a person’s life expectancy. Many of these illnesses have been previously linked to as person’s quality of life and their socio-economic status.

Relaxin loosens your joints to allow the pelvis to accommodate the enlarging uterus. These loose joints force the muscles of the back and pelvis to work overtime to keep you upright and balanced.

Try these tips to help minimize your risk of back pain: Exercise can help increase muscle support for your aching back. Always consult a healthcare practitioner before participating in a new exercise regimen. Low-impact cardiovascular activities, such as swimming, walking, or stationary cycling can help relieve pain and maintain fitness.

“It is very evident that what is going on in our mouths can really be a useful window to our overall health. It is therefore vital that we take proper care of our mouth and pay close attention to what is happening as it could be a sign of something more serious.”

The charity is urging people to abide by three simple rules for looking after their oral health; brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste; cut down on the amount of sugary foods and drinks and how often you have them and visiting your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend, by doing so it is possible to help prevent disease, not only in the mouth but the whole body too.

Dr Carter added; “Tooth loss itself comes with its own problems, it can lead to issues with eating and therefore a person’s ongoing nutrition and even create problems with their ability to communicate.

“We welcome more research into this matter as it may be a way to detect and prevent diseases related to tooth loss and other serious systemic diseases.”

Beaches TCI trains staff in autism awareness Beaches Resort recently partnered with Sesame Workshop to bring a highly affective Autism Sensitization training to the Turks & Caicos. Over three hundred team members and thirty- two teachers from the local schools were trained as part of a workshop to provide individuals with greater understanding of autism and support for families that vacation at the resort.

Hosted by Maria Del Rocio Galarza, Assistant Vice President at Sesame Workshop, staff members from thirteen departments attended the training exercise which was open for front line staff and others who have daily interaction with children.

The training also puts participants on a path to receiving certification on Autism Awareness.

Beaches TCI also opened the training to the community as the resort had participants from the three movement primary schools— Enid Capron Primary, Ianthe Pratt Primary, Oseta Jolly Primary where

over Thirty-two teachers were trained in Autism Awareness.

Rachel Handfield, Principal of the Osetta Jolly Primary School expressed here gratitude for the training, “We are grateful for the partnership with Beaches in assisting with the development of the teachers skills in that area. The entire staff attended the workshop and they were very excited about the positive interaction and the information they gathered. They are more equipped and confident in the teaching of students who exhibit symptoms of autism. The workshop was very educational and also motivational for our teachers and we look forward to another one in the future.’

The Sesame Workshop’s “See Amazing in All Children” was originally launched as a nationwide initiative in Jamaica to provide greater understanding and acceptance of autism and offers families, with children on the spectrum, ways to overcome common challenges and simplify everyday activities.

Staff members are set to receive additional training during a workshop in March spearheaded by the International Symposium on Cognitive Research and Disabilities where they will be officially certified in Autism Awareness.

Beaches TCI notes that between January 2016 and January 2017, 14,438 children from newborns to 17 year olds stayed at the property.

During that same period, the hotel saw an additional 180 children with autism.

Worry across region as Digicel gets ready to cut jobs to shave rising debt DIGICEL triggered jitters across the Caribbean as it announced its plans to slash more than 1,500 jobs over the next 18 months in a bid to cut down its rising debt.

The cuts were expected to begin on Wednesday, affecting the company’s 6, 500 full time employees, plus contractors and part-time workers in the Caribbean, Central America and in the Pacific.

The Irish-owned telecommunications group reported a six percent drop in revenue for September to December 2016 and said its debt had reached more than US$6 billion.

It blamed declining profits on currency weaknesses across several of its major markets, including Jamaica and Haiti.

The Irish Times reported that while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization rose one per cent to US$285 million on a constant-currency basis, they fell when earnings from Haiti, Jamaica and other markets were translated into US dollars. The Jamaican dollar has depreciated by 11 percent against the US dollar over the past two years, while the Haitian gourde has fallen more than 40 percent.

The company has made a commitment to reduce its debt ratio to 4.5 per cent by March 2018 and has announced new plans to achieve this.

The company said it would embark on a complete overhaul of its organizational structure dubbed Digicel 2030 transformation.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Public Administration and Community Minister Maxie Cuffie says he will be meeting with Digicel officials “at

the earliest opportunity” to discuss the implications for the twin island republic.

Secretary General of Communication Workers’ Union Joseph Remy who accused the company of being anti-union told the Trinidad Express that Digicel workers were being made the scapegoat for management’s poor decision to rack up billions of dollars in debt.

“Digicel has resisted unionization ever since its advent to the Caribbean.

What is happening now is a direct result of that, and that is reason they have been resisting unionization, because they would want to continue to take these kinds of high-handed actions and lay off persons without any challenge whatsoever,” Remy charged. (Caribbean360)

Caribbean warned to prepare for more severe storms ORGANIZATION of Eastern Caribbean (OECS) member states have been urged to prepare for more extreme weather conditions and natural disasters as a result of climate change.

The warning came from Crispin d’Auvergne, St. Lucia’s chief sustainable development officer as he contributed to a panel discussion at an OECS climate change forum in Dominica, part of the Vini Kozè (Let’s Chat) Series that engages citizens in discussion and debate on development opportunities and challenges facing the region.

According to d’Auvergne, a 2008 environmental study showed that while St Lucia sees an average of one to two Category 4 or Category 5 hurricanes per year, it is likely to increase to four or five hurricanes of that magnitude each year.

Citing another study, he said

rainfall in the Caribbean is expected to increase by 25 to 50 percent in the next five decades. These extreme weather patterns will become “the new normal”, he said, adding that because the frequency and intensity of extreme weather conditions is likely to increase, the Caribbean should plan accordingly, preparing for more severe natural disasters like droughts, hurricanes and floods.

After Dominica was devastated

by Tropical Storm Erica in August 2015, the Minister for Health and Environment, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, said Dominica had never seen a disaster of such proportions in terms of damage to infrastructure and the loss of life. Infrastructural damage was estimated at $1.4 billion.

Minister Darroux said the storm caused the government to revisit its land use, policies, and regulations.

Religious leaders call for Christie to apologise for middle finger gesture PROMINENT religious leaders on Tuesday demanded Prime Minister Perry Christie apologise for sticking up his middle finger at a community meeting Monday night, while addressing hundreds of Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) supporters.

Bahamas Christian Council President Rev Dr Ranford Patterson said the nation’s leader has a responsibility to children to apologise for his obscene gesture and explain why he did it.

Meanwhile, Bishop Simeon Hall, pastor emeritus of New Covenant Baptist Church, said while he understands the pressure that comes with the Office of the Prime Minister, Mr Christie should learn to curse “in

private”.

During a community meeting in Fox Hill Monday night, Mr Christie stuck up his middle finger as he lashed out at allegations made in a video circulating on Facebook that he owned a condominium property obtained through political impropriety. He added that he would not let political lies of this sort distract him from the task of governance.

“It is very unfortunate that Mr Christie chose to do that,” Rev Patterson told The Tribune.

“He needs to apologise to the nation for him, it is not becoming of a Prime Minister. I have gotten calls from as far as the United States after the picture and the story went viral.

Whether he meant anything bad by it or not, whether he meant to do it or not, it does not look good for this country.

“The Prime Minister has been in office for almost 40 years so I do not think it’s the pressure getting to him. I do not understand why he did it, but I hope he sees the wisdom in coming forward and apologising. He has a responsibility to the nation and to the young people who watch him.

He should say ‘I’m sorry’ and we can all move on.”

Meanwhile, Bishop Hall said it is unfortunate that Mr Christie allowed his critics to “pull him below” the dignity of his office.

Regional News Amnesty hits out at LGBTI discrimination in the Bahamas IN its 2016-2017 report on human rights in The Bahamas, Amnesty International has criticised The Bahamas for its “discriminatory” posture towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people and for the country’s rejection of last year’s constitutional referendum on gender equality.

“Stigma and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people continued,” the organisation said. “In April, activists founded the group Bahamas Transgender Intersex United. After its first press conference, members of the group reported receiving threats from members of the public.

In May, an MP suggested that transgender people be exiled to another island.”

Amnesty International was referring to Tall Pines MP Leslie Miller who, last May, denounced the transgender community, urging people to provide financing that would allow the community to be exiled to their own private island to ensure “they stay out of the way” of Bahamians.

“If you want to like man, that’s your damn business but don’t try to impose your will on other people,” Mr Miller said in an interview with The Tribune at the time.

“God should hurry up and come and get this over and done so we don’t have to worry about them,” he added.

With respect to last year’s constitutional referendum in which Bahamians rejected changes that would have allowed for greater equality between the sexes,

Amnesty International said: “The proposed amendments – backed by the government – would have strengthened anti-discrimination protections based on sex. The result maintained inequality in Bahamian laws so that women and men pass on citizenship to their children and spouses in different ways. The result put at risk the citizenship rights of families, in particular the risk of separation of families with diverse nationalities or children born outside of the Bahamas to Bahamian parents.”

Amnesty International also highlighted concerns raised by organisations like Save the Bays (STB) with respect to privacy rights.

“Local human rights groups expressed fear regarding government surveillance online,” Amnesty said.

“In August, the Supreme Court ruled that the Minister of Education (Jerome Fitzgerald) had breached the constitutional rights to privacy and to freedom of expression of members of an environmental group when he obtained and read their private email correspondence in Parliament. Ministers had alleged that the group was seeking to destabilise the government, and argued that parliamentary privilege allowed them to read out the confidential emails. The court held that parliamentary privilege was subject to the supremacy of the Constitution, and ordered the destruction of the correspondence.

At the end of the year, it remained unclear how the government had obtained the emails.”

Beneficial ownership registry approved in Cayman THE Legislative Assembly passed three bills Monday that will enable the creation of a searchable, corporate ownership registry, moving the Cayman Islands closer to compliance with a U.K. agreement established in April.

Ahead of Wednesday’s trip to London, Premier Alden McLaughlin requested the House move to committee to deliberate the proposed Companies Amendment No. 2 Bill, Companies Management Amendment No. 2 Bill 2016, and the Limited Liabilities Companies Amendment Bill 2016.

Together the bills outline definitions of beneficial ownership and set forth creation of a registry that would be accessible by law enforcement

and tax authorities. The registry, requested of all U.K. Overseas Territories, would aim to bolster financial crime investigations and target corruption.

Premier McLaughlin said the bills’ passage will allow him to inform U.K. authorities that the islands are on track to meet a June deadline on the issue. He is scheduled to meet with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on Monday.

The Legislative Assembly will adjourn until Mr. McLaughlin’s return on March 8.

“One of the things we wish to do on that trip is to brief the minister and FCO personnel about where we have reached in terms of our preparation to deal with the deadline with respect to the beneficial ownership issue,” he said Monday.

UN fund to fight cholera in Haiti hovers at two percent of goal LATE last year, the United Nations vowed to intensify the fight against a deadly cholera outbreak its peacekeepers inadvertently carried to Haiti. To date, however, it has raised just a small fraction of the estimated $400 million needed over the next two years to wage that campaign, according to a letter from the new secretary-general.

“The voluntary contributions that have been received are not yet sufficient and constitute only 2 percent of the amount,” Antonio Guterres wrote in the letter sent last week to permanent representatives of the international body.

That would mean about $8 million. The letter said that as of February 8, five member states Chile, France, India, Liechtenstein and South Korea - collectively had pledged almost $2 million to a U.N. multi-partner trust fund. Outside of that fund, Japan has promised $2.6 million and Canada has committed about $6 million.

Guterres’ letter asks all member states to notify him by March 6 of their intentions to help finance the campaign.

Separately, the U.S. government committed $2.9 billion to recovery and reconstruction efforts after a devastating quake in early 2010.

U.N. peacekeepers arriving from Nepal are believed to have caused Haiti’s current epidemic, which broke out near a U.N. base in October of that year. Since then, more than 788,000 people have been diagnosed with the infectious disease and at least 9,000 have died.

Last December, then-SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon apologised to Haiti’s people, on behalf of the United Nations, “for the loss of life and suffering caused by the country’s cholera epidemic.”

added, “Eliminating cholera from Haiti, and living up to our moral responsibility to those who have been most directly affected, will require the full commitment of the international community and, crucially, the resources necessary.”

The U.N. also outlined a response along two tracks: reducing cholera and aiding victims.

It aims to trim the number of annual cases from the current 30,000 to fewer than 10,000 by the end of 2018. It also plans to ensure that all Haitians have access to clean drinking water and to toilets by 2030.

Only a quarter of the population now has access to toilets, the letter said.

Vibrio cholerae bacteria spread through food and water contaminated by an infected person’s feces, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The infectious disease is most prevalent in places with poor sanitation and health systems.

Relatives of 5,000 Haitian cholera victims initially sought legal redress in 2011 from the United Nations,

whose Office of Legal Affairs said their claims were “not receivable,” The New York Times reported last August in a story on the U.N.’s admission of a role in the epidemic.

Other litigation still is pending.

The trust fund provides a means by which the U.N. intends to provide “material assistance” to aid Haitians most affected by the epidemic.

Brian Concannon is executive director of the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, a nonprofit organization that represents the Haitian cholera victims and their relatives. He told VOA that at one point, half of the anticipated $400 million was earmarked for victims – either through community-based projects such as new hospitals and schools or through direct compensation to the families.

But “the main story is there’s not much money,” Concannon said, noting that his clients have been cautioned “to recalibrate their expectations...We’re hearing very little about direct payments to individuals.”

Former Deputy PM Symonette wants to run for the FNM in St Anne’s FIVE years after announcing his retirement from frontline politics, former Deputy Prime Minister Brent Symonette this week revealed his intention to run on the Free National Movement’s ticket for the St Anne’s constituency, as he insisted that there were “no strings” attached to this decision.

Mr Symonette represented the area from 2007-2012.

Despite his public support for Official Opposition Leader Loretta Butler-Turner during her most recent failed leadership bid just last

year, Mr Symonette, 62, said he is ready to work closely with FNM Leader Dr Hubert Minnis after much consideration.

He said the decision was made while considering the “diabolical” performance of the Progressive Liberal Party over the past five years.

The announcement comes as speculation swirled recently that Mr Symonette was attempting to broker a deal with the FNM where he would run on the party’s ticket but under the condition that he be made party deputy leader.

This couldn’t be further from the truth, Mr Symonette told reporters yesterday during a press conference at his East Bay Street office to announce that he gave the nod to Dr Minnis to put his name forward as the candidate for St Anne’s.

However, he will still have to face all of the normal party procedures, including vetting from the FNM’s Candidates and Investigative Committees, before being ratified.

Mr Symonette also said his family stood in support of his move to reenter the political arena.

Brexit defeat for UK government over EU citizen rights BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May suffered her first Brexit bill defeat Wednesday, over the rights of EU citizens living in the UK. Members of the House of Lords, the upper house of the UK parliament, voted in favor of an amendment that called for EU nationals legally resident in Britain to be guaranteed the same status after the UK leaves the European Union.

The measure was passed by 358 votes to 256 in the Lords, where May’s Conservative Party does not command a majority.

The amended bill must now be sent back for consideration to the House of Commons, potentially threatening Downing Street’s March 31 deadline to trigger Article 50, the formal start to the Brexit process.

In the Commons in February, MPs passed the bill unamended after being assured that the rights of EU nationals would be protected.

Trump speech was ‘detached from reality’ say Democrats Casey Anthony was 19 when she made Caylee.

Anthony’s judge believes she killed toddler accidentally THE judge who presided over the murder trial of Casey Anthony has opened up with his thoughts on her case, saying that the mother may have accidentally killed her twoyear-old while trying to quiet her with chloroform.

Anthony was famously acquitted in her toddler Caylee’s 2008 death, but Judge Belvin Perry says he believes she was guilty of crimes besides first-degree murder.

While saying that it is just a theory, Perry told WFTV that he thinks Anthony did use chemicals to try to stop her child crying, but mistakenly used too much and killed her.

“The most logical thing that occurred, in my eyesight, based on everything I know about the case, was that (Anthony) did not intentionally kill her daughter,” the former judge told the station.

Prosecutors charged the then 22-year-old with first degree murder and sought the death penalty, saying that she had used chloroform and covered her mouth with duct tape.

While he believes there was

enough evidence for the first-degree murder charge, Perry told the Orlando Sentinel that the jury may have found her guilty of seconddegree murder or manslaughter.

Evidence in the case included the fact that Anthony searched online for how to use chloroform, and that chloroform was found in the trunk of a car she was believed to have used to hold Caylee’s remains.

Anthony’s defense team has said that Caylee Anthony drowned in the family swimming pool, and that someone besides her mother took the body away.

The now 30-year-old’s trial gained national attention, and she has maintained a low profile since being acquitted and moving to South Florida.

In a rare public appearance, she was spotted earlier this month at a rally against President Trump at his Palm Beach resort Mar-a-Lago.

After his retirement as a judge, Perry joined a private Florida law firm and is now a legal analyst.

Nicaragua woman burnt on a fire in exorcism ritual

A YOUNG woman in an isolated part of Nicaragua has died a week after being tied up and allegedly thrown on a fire in an exorcism ritual.

Family members told local media that Vilma Trujillo had been attacked by four people led by a man who said he was an evangelical pastor.

Juan Rocha denied burning Mrs Trujillo, saying evil spirits had suspended her above the fire and then dropped her.

Relatives found Mrs Trujillo, 25, hours later with severe burns.

The police have arrested Mr Rocha and a number of other people allegedly involved in the attack.

The victim’s husband, Reynaldo Peralta Rodriguez, said the motherof-two was taken inside a church last week when members thought she was possessed after allegedly

trying to attack people with a machete, the Associated Press reports.

“It’s unforgiveable what they did to us,” he was quoted as saying.

“They killed my wife, the mother of my two little ones. Now what am I going to tell them?”

Pablo Cuevas, a spokesman for Nicaragua’s Human Rights Commission, called on the government for firmer control over religious sects in the country.

“It is incredible that these things can happen today, there has to be a review by the authorities into all the different denominations and religions,” he said. “We can’t have things like this happening.”

Women’s rights groups said the case was an example of fanaticism and misogyny.

PRESIDENT Donald Trump preached a message of unity in his Congress address but fails to back that up with action, top Democrats have said.

He has no plan and has “not reached out to us once”, said the party’s Senate leader, Chuck Schumer.

Oprah Winfrey said she previously thought she lacked the experience to be president.

Trump made Oprah rethink White House bid Oprah Winfrey says President Donald Trump’s victory has made her rethink whether she could ever run for president and be elected to the White House, though she went on to say it won’t happen.

Winfrey, a passionate supporter of former President Barack Obama who backed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 race, spoke with financier David Rubenstein in December as part of his Bloomberg Television show, which premiered this week.

Winfrey suggested that before Mr Trump’s election victory she thought that she didn’t have the necessary government experience or “know enough” to run the country, but now she thinks differently.

“Have you ever thought given the popularity you have - we haven’t broken the glass ceiling yet for women - that you could actually run for president and be elected?” Mr Rubenstein asked during the interview.

“I never considered the question even a possibility,” Winfrey said, adding, “I just thought ‘oh’,” presumably referring to President Trump’s victory.

“Right, because it’s clear that you don’t need

government experience to be elected president of the United States,” Mr Rubenstein said.

“That’s what I thought,” Winfrey said. “I thought, oh gee, I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough, and now I’m thinking, ‘oh’.”

She and the audience laughed.

Growing more serious, she added, “No, that won’t be happening.”

Mr Trump, a billionaire businessman, had never before held public office before his election victory in November.

Left wing filmmaker Michael Moore said in the wake of the Trump victory that the Democrats should follow the Republicans’ lead and run a well-known, beloved candidate like Winfrey next time.

“Democrats would be better off if they ran Oprah or Tom Hanks ... why don’t we run beloved people?” Moore said on CNN on November 13.

“The Republicans do this, they run Reagan and the Terminator [Arnold Schwarzenegger] and other people... Why don’t we run somebody that the American people love and are really drawn to, and that are smart and have good politics and all that?”

In the Bloomberg Television interview, Winfrey said a woman in a restroom hectored her for not doing enough to help Hillary Clinton get elected. “... there was another lady attacking me because she thought I didn’t do enough for Mrs Clinton,” Winfrey said.

“So somebody else came out of a stall - this is yesterday and said, ‘Leave Oprah alone, she’s just trying to pee.’”

“And she followed me out talking about what I could have done, should have done, blah blah blah,” Winfrey added.

Winfrey endorsed Mrs Clinton, the first female majorparty US presidential nominee, in 2016, telling Entertainment Tonight last June that “it’s a seminal moment for women.”

But Winfrey didn’t play as prominent a role for Mrs Clinton as she did for Mr Obama in 2008. “I haven’t felt that my voice would actually make a difference,” Winfrey told Chicago radio station WBEZ last August. “I felt that at the time in 2008, my voice made a difference. So at this particular time, I think my voice is just going to be added to the cacophony of all the other voices, and now nobody knows who to even listen to.”

‘Moonlight’ caps underdog run with storybook finish SETTING aside the tumultuous way it happened, “Moonlight” capped off an astonishing award-season run with its best picture victory at the Oscars, having swept the Independent Spirit Awards the night before.

The final and biggest prize concluded what the movie’s understandably stunned director, Barry Jenkins, called “a dream” for the low-budget film, which chronicles the coming-of-age story of a gay black man growing up in Miami in three distinct chapters. Different actors play the character as a child and teenager, bullied by his peers, and an adult whose life reflects the consequences of those experiences.

Even before that storybook finish, the movie was already a breakthrough for Jenkins, 37, who had a limited resume, having directed short films as well as the well-regarded 2008 feature “Medicine for Melancholy” before its release. After that lengthy dry spell between movies, he now becomes a sought-after filmmaker, with a Netflix series adaptation of the movie “Dear White People” among his upcoming projects.

The film began as an autobiographical play, titled “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue,” written by Tarell McCraney. The project

was brought to Jenkins, who shared a very similar upbringing with the author: the two men “grew up blocks away from each other” in the same impoverished neighbourhood, as Jenkins told NPR, and both had mothers who were addicted to crack cocaine.

Made for a mere $5 million -- a fraction of the budget for most studio releases -- the movie became an instant hit on the film festival circuit, drawing praise for its hypnotic tone and complex depiction of sexuality and masculinity within the African American community.

“Moonlight” has been hailed as part of a wave of movies released this year with African American leads and themes, along with bestpicture nominees “Fences” and “Hidden Figures,” both major-studio fare.

That recognition followed a twoyear shutout of minority nominees in Oscar acting races that gave rise to the #OscarsSoWhite campaign.

Entertainment Jackson’s cousin must stay away from King of Pop’s mom amid abuse allegations THE cousin of the late Michael Jackson accused of abusing and exploiting the King of Pop’s mom failed to get a restraining order against him tossed on Wednesday.

Trent Jackson, 52, claimed through his lawyer he is not a threat to Katherine Jackson and believes the matriarch doesn’t actually want him fired as her driver and personal assistant.

“This guy is a Teddy bear,” attorney Ron Rale told the Daily News during a break in the hearing in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The court denied the request, saying the pop family’s matriarch wasn’t required to attend in person after filing a sworn statement through her lawyer Wednesday morning.

The judge instead granted a continuance until a follow-up hearing March 23. Rale said he wants to depose Katherine Jackson in the meantime.

Katherine, 86, has been away in London since she won a temporary restraining order Feb. 8, her lawyers said.

The stay-away order bars Trent - who is her nephew-in-law - from entering the gated community in Calabasas, where he was living in her guest house. It also orders him to return all keys, credit cards and vehicles previously used in her name.

“She doesn’t want to come back until the restraining order is made permanent,” Katherine’s lawyer Juliana Edwards told The News.

“Clearly he’s fighting it,” she said.

Rale said his client has moved out of Katherine Jackson’s mansion and will abide by the stay-away order pending the next court date.

“My belief is that if she were here, she’d tell you how much she loves Trent,” he said.

Restoring the function of the organ - which helps control blood sugar levels - reversed symptoms of diabetes in animal experiments.

The study, published in the journal Cell, says the diet reboots the body.

Experts said the findings were “potentially very exciting” as they could become a new treatment for the disease.

People are advised not to try this without medical advice.

In the experiments, mice were put on a modified form of the “fasting-mimicking diet”.

It is like the human form of the diet when people spend five days on a low-calorie, low-protein, low-carbohydrate but high unsaturated-fat diet.

It resembles a vegan diet with nuts and soups, but with around 800 to 1,100 calories a day.

Then they have 25 days eating what they want - so overall it mimics periods of feast and famine.

Previous research has suggested it can slow the pace of ageing.

DIRECTOR OF CONSTRUCTION ASSISTANT COOK • Sailrock Contracting Limited is seeking a Director of Construction to reside in South Caicos and oversee all construction activities carried out by the Sailrock Development.

The employee will be responsible for acting as Owner’s representative during construction of infrastructure, hospitality and residential components of Sailrock Development. His responsibilities include managing and supervision of architects, engineers, contractors, vendors and all construction activity; to provide oversight and supervision of quality building practices, good construction environmental controls and best practices; to develop and implement a quality assurance program; to manage project controls and pay requests including change order management; drive to achieve schedule and budget goals; and to assist in the development and ongoing updating of project schedules.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be consistently punctual for work.

• Maintain a clean work station throughout shift.

• Must maintain a clean, well kept appearance upon arrival and though out shifts.

• Must be able to multi task in a fast pace, high pressure environment.

• Work the pass and salad station on the hot line, during service when needed, executing food to order in an ala minute kitchen according to the ticket in a timely manner.

• Be able to stand on ones feet for 8 hours and be comfortable lifting 25 pounds or more without physical restrictions.

• Be available to work holidays and weekends with a flexible schedule • Prepare meats, vegetables and fruits according to standardized recipes utilizing the following skills: • Knife skills – dicing, chopping and slicing of various products to achieve a uniform result to promote consistency in accordance with recipe standards • Prepare a variety of dressings, salsas, and sauces based on standardized recipes • Finish and plate cooked items on the pass station on the hot line quickly and efficiently.

Responsibilities: • Development and Pre-Construction• Develop detailed construction budget for each component of project: including infrastructure, Hotel, stand-alone villas, and RO plant, roads and other projects.

• Develop detailed construction schedule indicating milestones, durations and dependencies for each component of project.

• Develop action plan for mitigation of site issues, delays, procurement strategies and quality control • Develop bid packages for Hotel, Villa and R/O plant and Villa components (hotel component already out to bid) • Review construction bids. Assist in evaluating bids and prepare a qualified tabulation for review and approval • Develop a list of value engineering recommendations and review/comment on those VE recommendations provided by others • Assist in preparation, review and negotiation of Contractor(s) agreement • Secure insurance certificates and other required contractor documentation prior to start of construction • Lead project team and stakeholders in creating a culture of driven and measured performance • Oversee management of design team in conjunction with Project Engineer and Corp team • Contribute to project programming, design reviews and proforma analysis • Track progress of planning and permit approvals in conjunction with Planning Consultant • Interface with Authorities Having Jurisdiction to drive reviews and approvals of project documents • Engage with various Government entities to track and cause timely execution of submittals • Nurture and maintain strong relationships with local business and governmental community • Construction Project Management• Act as Owner’s representative on South Caicos managing and providing daily oversight of all construction activities with a critical path and quality control focus.

• Meet daily with contractors to review progress relative to contract construction schedule, discuss open items and delivery of items required for future work.

• Provide daily oversight of quality control. Identify and discuss with Owner action plans for any observed deficiencies in the work or potential change in scope • Provide weekly written progress updates specifically noting schedule and budget status as well as identifying critical path decisions required.

• Manage accounting associated with pay requests, pencil draws and final pay applications.

• Conduct weekly progress meetings with Owner to discuss progress, budget and critical path items • Coordinate with contractor(s) to ensure delivery of all materials in accordance with project schedule. This may include reviewing orders, tracking shipment and ensuring delivery of both Contractor-supplied and Owner-supplied materials.

• Review and authorize pay requests, change orders • Manage accounting associated with pay requests, pencil draws and final pay applications.

• Review and approve submittals, including shop drawings, as required • Schedule and document required government inspections during construction • Prepare initial punch list and maintain log of completed items.

• Monitor contractor’s progress towards completion of punchlist • Collect and maintain all project closeout documents including guarantees, manuals, record information, etc.

• Work with contractor to ready buildings for occupancy • Coordinate delivery and installation of all FFE and OSE • Maintain all insurance certificates and other required documentation • Overall responsibility in driving actuals to established comprehensive project budget and schedule • Interact with Owners and other stakeholders as needed to resolve project issues Education and Experience: • Candidate must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related field. Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite, Accounting Software, and MS Project Scheduling or similar software is a must. Candidate must have significant experience in ground up development and construction with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant experience.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $145,000 yearly

DUTIES:

• Be a self starter that can be one of the first people in the kitchen in the morning or one of the last to leave the kitchen at night. Prioritizing and executing prep items based on needs. Properly labeling foods with the date and prep item name and assuring they are rotated, and stored for future use.

• Work with other kitchen staff members to execute food, prioritize steps and contribute to the overall team atmosphere of the kitchen.

• Demonstrate a positive attitude.

• Participate in daily cleaning duties as per scheduled by the Chef to maintain a clean safe environment for all employees to work in.

MVP of the 2016 National High School Basketball Championships Wilkins Sylvain said he enjoyed the experience of the top Bahamian school tournament.

Sylvain feels Hugh Campbell Tournament was good for experience ALTHOUGH the Clement Howell High School Eagles did not win any of their games last week in the Hugh Campbell Basketball Tournament in the Bahamas, leading scorer Wilkins Sylvain felt that his first time at the Games was invaluable.

The 2016 National High School Basketball MVP, scored

20 and 17 points in the two games. He said he gained valuable experience from the clashes, and felt the team could have advanced deeper in the competition if they had their full squad.

“We only went with seven players; our full squad wasn’t there, so strength in numbers was missing”

LE Bouchon Nuff Said ended the unbeaten run of defending champions the BCB Wahoos when action continued last Thursday evening in the Carlisle Supplies Spring Tag Rugby League at the Meridian Field.

The Wahoos had tallied 11 straight wins last year and this new season, but fell short 16-10. Nuff Said’s Wesly Chery scored a recordequalling six tries (12 points), while Cesca Pierce supported with two tries.

The Wahoos’ tries were scored by five different players.

Also recording six tries was Craig James. He did so in the second game, when his Alexandra Resort Tipsy Turtles took on the Coast Red Mist.

James scored half of the points in the 24-12 win. Megan Harper led Red Mist with six points.

The evening opened with the Meridian Marauders whipping the Pampered Paws Reef Rovers 32-12.

Travy Russel, in her debut season, and Clifton Simeon scored four tries each. Tyler Forbes scored his first points of the season for the Reef Rovers, while support came from international women’s teammates Teann Thomas, Jen Martel and Brogan Doran.

Saturday’s fixtures to determine PPL Champions Playoffs teams THE final two games this Saturday will determine the Champions Playoffs teams in the Gilley’s Enterprises Provo Premier League.

The only certain side is Small World United. Despite a 2-1 defeat to Cheshire Hall on Tuesday evening, the new team still stand a good chance of finishing as the best side in the regular season.

The other teams that can advance to the top four are Beaches, Cheshire Hall, the SWA Sharks, AFC Academy and Full Physic—only three points separate them.

If Cheshire Hall win big (a nine goal margin) they will topple Small World for the top spot. Their opponents this Saturday afternoon, Full Physic, are also looking for a win. They currently sit fifth with seven points, but they have a superior goal different (20) and will earn a top four spot with a win since Beaches

(10 point) have a goal difference of five.

Defending champions, the Academy can finish in the top four with a win. They will try to end the Sharks’ hope of advancing. They currently sit on eight points after a 12-1 win over Teachers last Saturday.

If Academy and Cheshire Hall win, both teams will advance along with Beaches. If Cheshire Hall draws with Full Physic, they will still advance, despite the outcome between the Sharks and Academy.

If both games are drawn, Beaches, Cheshire Hall and Academy will advance. If Full Physic and Sharks win, they will both advance along with Beaches.

Full Physic take on Cheshire Hall at 18:00h, with the Sharks and Academy at 20:00h.

The bottom three teams will play for the Plate trophy.

Small World United are the only side sure about a Champions Playoffs spot.

Islanders record first PHL win It took 13 games over a few months of trying for the Grace Bay Car Rental Islanders to finally record a win in the Novice Division of the Provo Hockey League (PHL). The victory against the top of the division Grace Bay Resorts Conchorers was led by Isaac Turner and Max Scholar.

The pair combined for all the goals in the 5-3 win last Saturday at the Graceway Sports Centre. The Conchorers opened the scoring via a Joshua Fielding strike, and although Turner, who scored three goals, and Scholar had carried their team ahead 3-1 at the half, Fielding and Lucas Malcolm managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the second period before Turner and Scholar took control.

Scholar then scored three goals, but it was not enough as the Islanders went down to the Scotiabank Sailfish 3-4. That game proved to be an exciting clash with Scholar equalling the score every time the Sailfish found the back of the net (1-

1, 2-2 and 3-3). It took a successful strike from Makarii Lightbourne to determine a winner.

Jake Haggie, Brock Pollon and Dan Busuttil also scored for Sailfish.

BANTAM DIVISION In the Bantam Division the Turkberry Hurricanes and the Digicel Comets recorded their third win each when they took on the Projetech Penguins and Coco Bistro Bruins respectively.

The Hurricanes dominated their clash. They scored the first four goals; three in the first half and then one in the first five minutes of play.

Maddox Zaidan Jones led the attack with three strikes and an assist, while there were one each for Harry Whent and James Nesbitt. Charlie Missick scored the lone goal for the Penguins.

The Comets had a strong second period in their victory against group leaders, the Coco Bistro Bruins.

After trailing 1-2, Jack Blain scored his second goal to tie the game

before Samuel French added a pair in the 4-3 win.

Kurt Rivers led the Bruins with two goals, while Max Scholar added the other.

The Midget Division had two drawn clashes. First the Saunders Greyhounds and the Villa del Mar Flyers battled to a 7-7 finish, before the Greyhounds drew 9-9 with the Gansevoort Gators.

Dylan Ayer (also an assist) and Harry Schofield led the Greyhounds with three goals each.

Darius Coakley scored three goals and made an assist for the Flyers while Carson Greatrex added two goals and two assists.

Ayer was again in scoring mode when they played the Gators. He scored four goals and made an assist.

Zachary Scholar added three goals and three assists to the Greyhounds’ tally.

For the Gators Bradley Ayer score four goals, while Brooke Rivers assisted with two goals and an assist.

Zachary Scholar scored three goals and made three assists for the Greyhounds.

TCI now ranked fourth in Caribbean after Beach Soccer Championships TCI beach soccer team are now ranked fourth best in the Caribbean after their performance in the just concluded CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championships in the Bahamas.

The just released world ranking has TCI only behind the Bahamas (sixth in CONCACAF and 44th overall), Trinidad and Tobago (eighth in CONCACAF and 51st overall) and Jamaica (ninth in CONCACAF and 56th overall).

TCI are now 12th in CONCACAF with a world ranking of 73—a rise from their previous ranking of 17th in CONCACAF and 94th globally.

The side recorded one win, our first at this level, to finish 14th overall in the Bahamas. The 4-1 win over the USVI was the icing on the cake on what was considered a solid overall competition. The players held their own against some of the best in the region and were ahead 4-3 of eventual winners Panama in the preliminary round with 12 minutes left to play.

Technical Director of the TCIFA Daz Meehan said that: “We had the youngest squad to participate in a beach soccer championship and I believe the exposure and experience these players will gain over the next few years will be essential to the country’s growth in winning games.”

The technical director said he believed that with the progression the national team can reach the Beach Soccer World Cup final within 4-6 years.

National Beach Soccer Coach, Chris Bryan was also elated with the team’s performance. He said that the Panama clash resulted in new TCI fans.

“The team were magnificent in that game and played way above any expectation and received very high praise from everyone who watched the match in the stadium.”

STRONGER AND FITTER Bryan, who prepared the squad, added that the FA’s main aim was to introduce and expose the younger players in the squad to the rigours of international games. He added that: “We now understand that we must come into these types of championships stronger and fitter.

We had worked hard on our technical ability in training but now need to concentrate on adapting our style of play to mirror the top teams such as Mexico, El Salvador and the USA.” As Meehan, he too is confident of TCI performing well at the next regional event.

According to the youngster, the event is now his favourite.

MISSICK’S BRONZE Meanwhile Courtney Missick led his Jamaica College team to a third place finish in the 4X100M relays at the meet. He anchored his team in both the preliminaries and final.

National 800M record holder Ken Reyes had also led Jamaica College to the podium (although it was short-lived). His 4X800M team had finished second, but was later disqualified for a violation.
