TCI faces oxygen supply shortage due to global demand

BY OLIVIA ROSE THE TURKS and Caicos Islands is facing an acute shortage of oxygen therapy equipment and oxygen supplies because of high global demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“In our current state, two patients on constant ventilation can consume all of our oxygen capacity in a matter of two weeks,” Health Minister Hon. Edwin Astwood said.

The demand for medical oxygen increased dramatically after the coronavirus was declared a pandemic on March 11.

Hospitals around the world saw their oxygen therapy equipment overwhelmed and oxygen supplies depleted as the facilities treated an influx of Covid-19 patients.

This challenge was highlighted

by Health Minister Hon. Edwin Astwood during his ministerial speech in the House of Assembly on Friday, May 29.

“With the increase in demand for oxygen therapy equipment due to Covid-19, countries are facing challenges in understanding what type of, how much and where to find the needed equipment,” he said.

Astwood added that the territory does not have the capacity to produce oxygen cylinders, and as a result they have to be shipped from overseas to the territory.

The lack of oxygen poses a serious challenge for the TCI in the event of an outbreak.

However, the Ministry of Health is working assiduously to remedy this problem by implementing strict monitoring measures, Astwood said.

“Amid the constraints to global supply chains due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and when governments throughout the world are facing considerable challenges to support their populations, and with a high demand and low availability of essential medical supplies, export restrictions, and limited transportation capacity due to the decrease or absence in air travel, this Government thus far, has effectively responded to Covid-19.

“We are ensuring that our healthcare systems have the capacity to identify and treat both current and future respiratory illnesses, especially those due to SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks.”

He said the Ministry of Health plans to purchase the full range of products required to generate oxygen in-country, and provide oxygen therapy and monitoring.

“This development highlights that within the Ministry of Health a sustainable approach has been incorporated into the overall Covid-19 response.

“By building on the work of increasing capacity at our healthcare facilities, focus has

been given to improving local oxygen supply and oxygen therapy systems at both TCIG hospitals.”

Astwood explained that oxygen is a major component for treating severe pneumonia, as well as other conditions.

In normal times, most hospital patients receive normal air or low-flow oxygen, but during the pandemic a much larger number of patients need oxygen therapy to support their breathing.

Covid-19 attacks the lungs and can cause severe pneumonia and difficulty in breathing.

Some patients require a sustained form of ventilation including full sedation and a tube passed into their windpipe.

“Covid-19 causes pneumonia and approximately 15 percent of Covid-19 patients are classified as ‘severe’ and require oxygen therapy,” the minister explained.

“Much fewer, approximately

five percent, are classified as ‘critical’ and require a ventilator.”

A ventilator is a complex device that requires well trained staff to operate and maintain.

It provides mechanical ventilation and is only used for those critical Covid-19 patients in intensive care who are unable to breathe.

Oxygen therapy, on the other hand, involves a free-flow of oxygen through the nostrils to support hospitalised patients recovering from Covid-19.

He stressed that over the past three months, the ministry has been laser focused on mitigating the spread of coronavirus, contact tracing suspected cases, developing the in-country testing capabilities and increasing the capacity of health facilities to treat severe patients while simultaneously developing protocols for reopening the territory.

Integrity Commission arrests two police officers TWO serving police officers were arrested by investigators from the Turks and Caicos Islands Integrity Commission on Sunday (May 31).

The arrests came following allegations of a number of criminal offences.

Both officers were subsequently released on bail and placed on administrative

leave by the Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting.

On Tuesday, the police press office said: “This criminal investigation led by the Integrity Commission and supported by officers from the Royal TCI Police Force is at an early stage and at this time no further comment will be made.”

A prisoner can be seen wielding a piece of wood in the recently shared video

Prisoner attacks guard at HMP AUTHORITIES are investigating yet another incident in the territory’s prison this one caught on video by a prisoner and shared widely around social media.

In one of the seconds long recordings, a prisoner can be seen wielding a piece of wood and attacking a uniformed prison guard, who immediately dropped to the ground.

Seconds later several other guards rushed to the aid of their colleague, who appeared to be unconscious.

His inert body dangling from their arms, the guards rushed the injured man away from the prison cells, as the attacker stood watching.

The reason behind the attack has not yet been substantiated by the relevant

authorities.

The Weekly News reached out to the minister with responsibility for the prison, Hon. Goldray Ewing, but he said he will not comment on the matter until he has a full report of what transpired from the Superintendent of the Prison, Grahame Hawkings.

He said the matter is being investigated by the police.

Human Rights Commissioner Sabrina Green has also stated that her department is investigating the incident.

Health ministry develops Covid-19 mass testing strategy Trial run testing is underway, says health minister

BY OLIVIA ROSE A COMPREHENSIVE Covid-19 testing strategy which includes the establishment of a laboratory facility in Grand Turk has been developed.

The detailed document also lays plans for antibody testing and partnership between the Government and the private health sector.

This comes as the Ministry of Health gears up to roll out widespread testing for the coronavirus in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Minister of Health Hon. Edwin Astwood announced the strategy during his ministerial statement in the House of Assembly on Friday, May 29.

He said the Public Health Team has already collected samples to test before the official in-country testing begins.

“On May 26, the lab analysed eight patient samples with a known positive to validate the run, and it resulted in the run being successful and indicated that we were moving in the right direction.

“These test runs were still

regarded as trial runs.”

The health minister revealed that an estimate of how much it will cost the Government to conduct community-based testing will be submitted to Cabinet soon for approval.

The territory acquired its first polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machine - a leading edge device used to test for the disease – at the end of April.

Since then, painstaking work has been ongoing to ensure testing is done in accordance with international benchmarks, the minister said.

“The National Public Health Laboratory has been working tirelessly to complete the verification process for performing the PCR test.”

Astwood explained that public health is now in possession of four PCR analysers, two Mic PCR analysers, one thermocyclin analyser and one GenExpert PCR analyser.

He said the recommended verification process has three aspects - one focuses mostly on the scientist and the analytical phase, excluding the amplification, and the remaining

two primarily on the analyser and amplification.

“A full verification includes a day-to-day precision which is performed over a period of three days.

“On completion of all three steps, the technologists found that they needed to repeat the last step, which they have now done, because the results of the confirmed samples did not meet the acceptance criteria.

“The acceptance criteria are one standard deviation or one cycle,” he added.

It was due to these critical requirements that in-country testing has been delayed, the minister stressed.

“If the technologists tell the minister that the verification process has to be repeated, hence

Parole board releases one, refuses two others AN INMATE at Her Majesty’s Prison, Quincy Thomas, was released on parole this week from a five year illegal firearm sentence.

Thomas and two others - Alexander Cuesta and Bernard Colebrooke - had applied for parole earlier this year.

The men met with the Parole Board in February this year, and earlier this week the board gave its decision that only Thomas will be released.

During their court appearances, all three applicants pleaded guilty to illegal possession of firearms and were sentenced to five, six and five years respectively.

Forty-three-year-old Thomas was granted approval to leave the facility on Tuesday (June 2).

He became eligible for parole in March 2020,

and due to good behaviour and assisting in the rebuilding of the prison roof following the hurricanes of 2017, his was granted.

His parole licence will expire in November 2021, when he would have been released from prison after having served all of his sentence.

Cuesta is one of three men who were convicted for their involvement in businessman Gary Meade’s murder.

He was convicted for his possession of Meade’s gun which was used to kill him, and another firearm.

Meanwhile, this was Colebrooke’s third parole denial. He is serving time in prison for keeping an illegal firearm in his Five Cays home. His sentence is up in July 2020.

“For performing testing on the Mic PCR analyser, the limit of detection is 600 viral copies for the assay, and anything lower will return a negative result even if the person is infected.

“If we have 700 copies the next amplification cycle would result in 1,400 copies.

“Up to 40 samples have been forwarded to a USA-based lab for comparison, for which 16 have already been tested in our National Public Health Laboratory, including my sample.”

He added that communications have been sent out to obtain contact details of frontline workers in TCIG, TCI Hospital and the private sector healthcare facilities for testing.

A website is also being developed to assist with registration.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health has finalised the regulations, protocols and guidelines for the private health sector to ensure they are properly reporting and notifying.

They also make sure that necessary provisions are in place to ensure that all Covid-19 testing for TCI residents is carried out in accordance with accepted international guidelines.

The importance of mass testing was reiterated by Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson during her ministerial statement.

The premier made it clear that testing is a key part of the Government’s phased reopening strategy.

“I am confident that if we made too early a step without achieving wider testing through in-country testing, without securing the urgent start of the first upgrade at InterHealth Canada to at least expand ventilators care or without securing more medical personnel and without procuring a good supply of personal protective equipment, we will be nothing short of reckless with the lives of our people.”

She stressed that it is crucial for the territory’s healthcare system to be prepared in the event of an outbreak, following community based testing.

“Whilst we accept that the virus is here and that we may have slowed the spread, we equally recognise that we cannot stay locked away forever and must be prepared for the real fact that there could be an outbreak.

“I believe that once testing which is now available incountry, once widened, we will see a spike in numbers and I want us to be prepared for this.

“This is why we must move with urgency but with care.

“I say with all sincerity that whilst TCIG coffers equally suffer we cannot reopen phases without a plan to give us the best chance of building on our early gains and at the peril of our people’s lives.

“It is not an easy decision but it is a necessary and important and yes a right decision.”

Cuban medical team to arrive next week

BY OLIVIA ROSE TWENTY Cuban medical professionals are expected to arrive in the TCI next week to help strengthen the territory’s fight against Covid-19.

The multi-disciplinary team will be deployed to the territory for three months, Minister of Health Hon. Edwin Astwood revealed in House of Assembly on Friday, May 29.

“If it needs to be extended, the request will be made prior to end

of the period,” he said.

The team of physicians, nurses, technicians and an administrator will be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival and then deployed to local hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

The medical team hails from the Henry Reeve Emergency Medical Contingent, named after a US-born general who fought in the First Cuban War of Independence in the 19th century.

Powell thanked FortisTCI employees for their “steadfast commitment to going the extra mile” and ensuring that the company provides a high level of reliability and support.

He encouraged customers to begin preparing for hurricane season now.

“If you already have an emergency plan, take the time to review it and make any necessary changes.

“Familiarise yourself once again with the plan and make sure that it includes an evacuation route and a list of emergency contacts.

“I also encourage you to consider how Covid-19 may impact those plans and the need for supplies.”

Cuban doctors prepare to leave for Italy to provide medical assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic

A small vessel from Haiti landed illegally on Malcolm’s Beach in Providenciales

Hundreds of Haitian migrants detained after dual sloop capture MORE than 260 Haitian men and women were detained after they were steered into TCI waters on two small wooden sloops this past week.

The first boat was spotted close to Providenciales on Sunday evening (May 31) and

the second was seen off French Cay on Monday evening.

The arrivals will bring the total of repatriated illegal migrants this year up to more than 1,050.

On Sunday at 9.06pm the Department of Immigration received a call from Royal

TCI Police Force’s Marine Branch saying a vessel carrying illegal migrants was close to Providenciales.

Immigration officers were immediately dispatched and conducted patrols with the assistance of police officers near areas of possible landing.

At 11.14pm officers received another call saying the Marine Branch had just intercepted the 30 foot blue wooden sloop with two outboard engines and was towing it to South Dock.

On Monday, a press release from the Immigration Department said that 135 people – 104 men and 31 women – were on board the vessel.

The passengers were removed from the boat just before 2am and taken to Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex for processing.

“All detainees are being screened by the Ministry of Health and efforts are advancing with the assistance of the Haitian government for swift repatriation,” the department said.

Then on Monday at 6.45pm the US Coast Guard spotted a suspicious vessel off French Cay. Marine Branch officers were

dispatched and intercepted another 30 foot vessel with 129 Haitian passengers on board.

The 109 men and 20 women were towed to South Dock port and handed over to immigration officers for processing at Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex.

Shortly after 11pm that same day, a second much smaller illegal vessel was identified in the area of Malcolm’s Beach.

Officers were dispatched to the area and saw several people running into the nearby bushes.

They managed to apprehend five Haitian men and one woman, and took them to the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex for processing.

The third arrival this week was the 11th illegal migrant interception so far in 2020 undertaken by the Royal TCI Police Force.

Prior to this week, the last vessel intercepted was in April when a total of 225 Haitian migrants were repatriated.

Illegal vessel landings and repatriation cost the TCI Government close to $3 million during the financial year 20192020.

In a police press release on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting acknowledged the “professionalism and determination” of the Marine Branch to protect the TCI’s border.

He also thanked on land officers, the Immigration Department and the UK Royal Marines who have been in the TCI since May 14 ready to support border protection.

Hon. Vaden Williams, Minister of Immigration, Citizenship, Labour and Employment Services, also thanked all agencies involved in the apprehension.

He acknowledged the combined efforts of the Marine Branch, the US Coast Guard, Bahamas Defence Force, Royal UK Marines and the Immigration Department.

It is an offence to harbour or assist illegal migrants. Anyone found guilty of engaging in such activity may be fined $20,000 or imprisoned for four years or both.

Wine Cellar employees and residents stage protest against unfair treatment of local businesses

Liquor store laments ‘unfair and unjust’ treatment by Gov’t

BY DELANA ISLES LOCAL wine and spirits distributer, The Wine Cellar, is alleging bias by the Government in not allowing the shop to reopen when competitors were allowed to do so a month ago.

At midday on Wednesday (June 3), several concerned residents

gathered for an hour in front of the Leeward Highway location in Providenciales to protest the “unjust and unequal” treatment.

They held placards which read, ‘Discrimination, discrimination, discrimination’, ‘I’m for TCI. When will TCI be for me?’ and ‘I support local. Period’ among others.

Robbers steal phones and money during highway heists TWO masked men made off with cell phones and money after robbing residents of a Leeward Highway apartment complex on Saturday (May 30).

According to the police press office, officers attended the scene at about 9pm and spoke to three tenants.

They said they were sitting outside the apartments when the armed men dressed in dark clothing robbed them.

The robbers then entered

one of the apartment units and demanded money before making away on foot. No one was injured in the incident.

An hour later armed men shot a 50-year-old man during the theft of money and a cell phone at a plaza along the Leeward Highway.

He was taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for treatment.

Company representative Desmond Williams, told the Weekly News that it is unfair that a business that has given back to the community for so long is denied the right to open.

“The whole thing started from May 5 when all of our competitors were allowed to open - Charlies, Turquoise Distribution and Wine Experience in Grace Bay… I went inside each establishment and took pictures and it’s time stamped on my phone,” he said.

“Even before that we were pleading with government officials including the governor via email to allow us to open and they continuously said no.

“We understood that, so long as everyone else was being treated equally. But then came May 5 and 6 - those guys opened.

“So we appealed to them again saying, these people are open, why are we being treated unfairly? And we have yet to get a response from them as to the double standard.”

Williams added that now that they are allowed to reopen on Friday (June 5) as part of the next

phase of the reopening of the territory, it is still one month after everyone else.

“We’ve been treated unfairly, and we feel we have been slighted,” he said.

“Expatriate owned businesses have been allowed to remain open, while the locally owned ‘pillar-stone’ business was forced to remain closed without explanation.”

He added that with scores of employees, all with families to support, it is unjust that they were asked to remain closed while employees from similar sectors continue to work.

Williams said due to the long closure, the company has had to make some adjustments to their workers’ pay.

He added that if they were given the same treatment as their competitors their workers would have been better compensated.

“However, The Wine Cellar is a family and we take care of our own and would rather take a loss than see our family go hungry.

“But this travesty of justice should never have been allowed to

take place in the Turks and Caicos and it is a shame that it is still happening in our beloved country.”

On May 29, Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson read her ministerial statement in the House of Assembly in which she spoke of the Government’s crisis support and the private sector.

“It is regrettable that in this climate people continue to play with people’s lives and minds,” she said.

“The weight on my Government and the health care professionals to make life saving decisions even in the face of criticism and reckless behaviour demanding re-opening and such the like is a heavy one but an easier decision than most know.

“Because my Government maintains that lives matter, your health matter more and my Government cannot apologise for this because it remains the right decision.”

The Wine Cellar, owned by local entrepreneurs and philanthropists Gilley and Althea Williams, has been a part of the TCI community for more than 30 years.

152 registered as unemployed due to pandemic

BY DELANA ISLES UNEMPLOYMENT due to the closure of many businesses as the world waits out the global pandemic indoors is souring around the world.

And the Turks and Caicos Islands is not exempt from this domino effect, Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson revealed in the House of Assembly last Friday, May 29.

However, the premier said the Government does not yet have the true picture.

“Despite the widespread statements that persons have lost their jobs, we do not see these reflected in registration by unemployed persons with the Labour Department.

“And I wish to appeal to our people to register so that we can be measured and appropriate in our response.”

She said the Labour Department has reached out to businesses and has also had businesses reach out to it to advise of the number of people laid off.

Presently, there are a total of 152 people confirmed to be unemployed by way of employer submissions.

“So far a total of 84 Turks and Caicos Islanders have been laid off and a total of 63 expatriates have also been laid off,” the premier said.

The breakdown is as follows: 84 Belongers, three residence permit holders, one permanent resident, four freelancers, 16 Jamaican nationals, 14 Sri Lankans, 11 Haitians, 11 Dominicans, four Canadians, three Nepalese and one British national.

The premier said these numbers were attained through employer’s submissions, and the Ministry of Immigration expects this number to change once information is received from several businesses that are currently holding discussions with their staff.

“I use this opportunity to appeal to TC Islanders who have lost their jobs to register with the Labour Department.”

Anyone can register as unemployed with the Ministry of Immigration in the form of an email, hotline numbers as well as office drop in.

Employers are further reminded that should they terminate a work permit holder during the period of airport closure, they remain responsible for the individual until it is reasonably possible for that person to leave the country.

They are also required to

ensure that their employees are still in housing until they depart the Islands.

Employers do not have the authority to release a work permit holder to take up employment with another employer.

Self-employed and employed

persons are also reminded of their obligation to adhere to the conditions of their work permits as imposed by the immigration board.

For those employers who are retaining their staff, they are reminded that any change

to salary and benefits must be communicated to staff.

Employers are also reminded that they are not allowed to force staff to take leave unless it is in line with section 8. (4) of the Employment Order.

This states: “An employee who

fails to take vacation with pay within six weeks after it becomes due shall lose his entitlement to such vacation.”

Failing to communicate or come to an agreement means that the current contract takes precedence.

Private sector hits back at premier’s ‘lack of generosity’ dig

BY REBECCA BIRD TWO organisations that represent TCI businesses have voiced their outrage at the premier’s recent comments suggesting that local firms lacked generosity during the lockdown.

The Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) and the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce said members have supported both their workers and the community.

Businesses have not only donated extensively to those in need but also paid millions of dollars in wages over the past nine weeks, they wrote to the press on Thursday (June 5).

Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson read her ministerial statement in which she spoke of the Government’s crisis support and the private sector on May 29 in the House of Assembly.

“What TCI has not seen is more generosity from businesses who can donate or greater acts of philanthropy,” the Minister for Finance, Investment and Trade said in concluding her speech.

“It is so important in this time to help a country that has helped you and to be a blessing when you are blessed.

“We must awaken hearts of compassion and we must recognise that no Government anywhere can meet all the needs of all its people in these times.”

Hitting back this week, Ronald Saunders, president of the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce, called the premier’s comments “unwarranted and unprecedented”.

“Contrary to the premier’s comments, the business community has put in extraordinary efforts to care for their employees and the people of the Islands, showing their generosity through actions rather than words,” he said.

“Businesses have kept paying salaries, where there is little aid.

They have distributed food where it is needed most. They have contributed to charities, churches and local communities.”

He explained that the business community has continued to do this without receiving any “meaningful support” from the Government.

the business community and to discuss the chamber’s recently submitted six point proposal for relief.

“The Government must not point fingers at the very people which can help the country recover - we must instead work together with urgency.”

In its statement released the same day, the TCHTA said it “could not disagree more” with the premier’s recent comments.

Credit for flattening of the Covid-19 curve and the current status of zero cases can be attributed to the responsible actions of the residents and businesses, it stated.

The TCHTA said that over the past nine weeks, the private sector has paid out over $77 million in

wages while it was illegal to open businesses and ports were closed.

“These businesses have had to borrow funds and arrange new financing to ensure as many staff members as possible were able to keep their jobs.”

The statement went on to describe numerous ways in which the private sector partnered with non-profit organisations to address the “humanitarian crisis” in the TCI. This included distributing food, donating medical supplies, and organising contracts with medical companies to ensure tourists can be cared for in the US if they become ill.

The TCHTA added that despite repeated requests it has not had any direct feedback from the

premier’s office or been granted the opportunity to meet with the premier.

There has also been no meeting granted by the minister of immigration or ministry of health to the groups representing the private sector.

CHANGE OF LEADER Deputy Premier Sean Astwood responded to the chamber and TCHTA’s statement on behalf of the People’s Democratic Movement in a social media post later that day.

He called the comments an “undated double barrel attack” on the premier which were “unwarranted, unhelpful, and calculated to coincide with each other”.

He said she was right to ask for her to seek more generosity towards her people in a time of crisis.

Astwood spoke of the TCHTA’s “self-serving” claims that businesses were responsible for flattening the curve, adding that they could not do so without the Government’s support.

“It is also offensive to a people whose Government passed laws and sacrificed all around to ensure that your industry did not endanger us or yourselves.

“This PDM Government could not do so without the hard work on the part of essential workers, civil servants, and the entire country.”

The deputy premier called for a change of leadership of the TCHTA before the Government considers any further work with the private sector group.

“No doubt this is a severely difficult time for business in TCI and around the world but it is not a time for the hotel and tourism industry and the business community to create a contest around its contribution measures while simultaneously holding its cap out in hand to Government for tax breaks and concessions.”

Gov’t approves $5.5m pay out to 4,610 affected workers

BY DELANA ISLES THE COVID-19 stimulus programme database has registered more than 4,500 approvals for payments for tourism industry employees affected by the global pandemic.

This was revealed by Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson during an update on the programme last Friday, May 29, in the House of Assembly.

As of 6pm on Thursday, May 28, the database registered 4,610 approvals for payments, representing a $5.5 million pay out to be made.

The premier stated that of that figure, more than 4,000 payments have already been made.

She added that currently the Compliance Department has about 1,900 files that are still

being processed, 750 of which are being actively managed and another 1,150 yet to be cleared.

She said to speed up the process, the Ministry of Finance has doubled the personnel in the Compliance Department to 30 to ensure that the folder is cleared quickly and that employees receive the much-needed money without further delay.

“Those are the files that are close to being approved, but may need one document to progress it to the approved status.”

She said the compliance team has been contacting people over the last week on email and those who have been contacted already are encouraged to respond as quickly as possible.

“If you do not respond, we have asked the team to call applicants within two hours of originating the email contact.

“From the various press releases, you will have a general idea of what you did and did not include in your submission, so do not wait until you get a call to start to put your documentation together.

“Create your file and have it prepared for when the email is sent out. It will take no more than five minutes to upload the excluded records into your file and as soon as you do so, the officer will see that you have added something and can approve your submission, or notify you otherwise.”

She added that for those citizens who do not have their status cards, for one or more reasons, they can now use a copy of their passport plus a copy of the birth certificate of one islander parent, or a copy of their birth certificate plus a

copy of the birth certificate of one or both indigenous islander parents.

In addition, compliance personnel can now - as part of the processing procedures accept an expired passport, if presented, along with a birth certificate of the applicant’s islander parent(s).

She said processors are now advised to use the immigration database in the extreme cases where an applicant cannot supply a status card or meet the requirement of the options.

The premier assured that the Government employees assigned to the programme are working really hard to ensure that the payments are made.

“Cabinet’s recent decision to accept multiple alternatives to proving status is an indication of the whole of Government’s

commitment to deliver this programme.”

She added that the database now registers 13,740 submissions, but quite a number of them are duplicates.

“As perplexing as it was to find out that there were over 2,200 files submitted between Friday and Monday last, of which 1,800 are possible duplicates.

“We understand that you took a chance to resubmit. Yes, the dreaded duplicates again, but they will be reviewed along with those documents that received a first level decline and those in compliance.”

She stated that the Government has every intention of using the funds allocated for this benefit, and as announced several times, is considering a second tranche of assistance for other sectors impacted.

How long will this anarchy last?

‘ANARCHY’ is a word describing a state of disorder due to lack of authority and planning.

The big cities of the United States are trapped in anarchy.

People, both local groups and teams transported into the cities, are rioting in the streets, damaging and burning buildings.

Starting in recent days they are breaking into buildings, stealing and burning the merchandise.

Top officials who don’t have plans to deal with this have resorted to calling in the local military, the National Guard.

Complete with tear gas and weapons including armoured vehicles and tanks.

Suddenly it’s another Tiananmen Square where the Chinese communist national government suppressed the Chinese people who were protesting against communism.

This is the reverse agenda.

Communists are the USA rioters.

Reminds historians of the 19171919 communist revolution in the USSR, Russia.

Revolutionary communist dictator Joseph Stalin joined German Nazi Adolf Hitler. Then in 1941, Stalin joined up with the UK and USA against Hitler because Hitler attacked Russia.

The USA then supplied much of the Russian military materials.

As soon as WWII was over Russia became the enemy again. They used plans stolen by Americans to set up the Soviet Nuclear bomb system.

Then came 50 years of Cold War when WWIII seemed ever near.

The current anarchy springs this year from the communist born Chinese bat/human virus.

Anarchy exploded after in one USA city four white policemen killed a black man. Actually, one did the killing while the others stood by. Only one was arrested (at time of writing).

Now the lockdowns for the Chinese virus are just starting to be released on a test basis. The search for a vaccine is underway but is not expected to be in place for another year.

China has yet to explain why

the virus exists and why it has been so well distributed around the world’s major countries.

China has been building up its military as fast as possible.

It seems China has a plan but not the rest of world.

Someone unknown is obviously financing the riots.

The USA federal government is planning to track down the sponsors of the rioters.

The world, a much smaller world, has been through these problems before. People died and property was destroyed.

How long will this anarchy last? Only God knows - he has his plan.

Addressing the socioeconomic impact of Covid-19 T

HE UN’s framework for the immediate socioeconomic response to the novel coronavirus cautioned that the pandemic is far beyond a health crisis.

The virus is devastating and it is transforming societies and economies at the core.

While its impact varies across countries and regions, most likely it will increase poverty and inequalities at home and therefore the realisation of sustainable development goals should be the new focus.

In the TCI, policy responses to the aftermath of the Covid-19 epidemic on exposed groups, societies and economies should be rapid and mirror the twodimensional approach of the Government and partners, geared toward a recovery plan for all.

While at this, it is important that the Government coordinates with and solidifies global pandemic policies.

Therefore, the decisions which the Government and its partners make to bolster key sectors and the support they received will certainly determine their longterm development trajectories.

Following the trends of the International Labour Organisation, the TCI Government must develop bold measures in its responses - moving away from the prepandemic socio-economic unsustainable policies and capitalise on the opportunity to build a viable future.

In so doing, the administration should extend a credit line as a

measure to help all TCI businesses and self-employed workers in the transport, hospitality and restaurant industries.

Crisis countermeasures with communication and media companies is vital for ease of, and to ensure the dissemination of, information between the Government and the citizenry and businesses and suppliers.

Moreover, the Government is required to revisit its fiscal policy by allocating more resources to workers on the frontline, such as doctors, nurses and police officers, geared toward implementing crisis mitigation

measures - covering training and development and the supply of protective equipment.

While on spending, another curative is to design an economic stimulus package, which includes a guarantee for low-interest loans for farmers and small and medium size enterprise within the agriculture sector.

And a one-time emergency income grant should be available to all formal and informal workers who had lost their jobs.

Social safety net programmes to protect below average nationals from poverty and hardship during an epidemic must take priority.

Noteworthy, as a response, countries are fumbling to implement tax moratorium measures, however the TCI has proudly paved the way for the region.

If I am not mistaken, in the TCI there are no income, capital gain, property or corporation taxes.

JAGS McCartney Day celebrations delayed CELEBRATIONS held once a year for JAGS McCartney Day have been delayed until the week of June 30 when he would have marked his 75th birthday.

The life and legacy of the TCI’s first chief minister would have been memorialised on the last Monday in May through a memorial service held at the JAGS Memorial Park in Grand Turk.

However, due to the protocols of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Government suspended activities related to the celebrations.

In a statement on May 25, Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson said the Government remains resolute to uphold and action the vision and dream of JAGS McCartney.

“I assure the people of the TCI that McCartney’s vision will not be lost to the ravages of time if we stand together, educate resiliently and strong in honour of his great legacy,” she said.

JAGS McCartney Day was renamed National

Heroes Day 25 years ago but this February the Government voted to reinstate the day.

This was done by way of the Public Holiday (Amendment) Bill 2020 tabled in the House of Assembly by Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson.

“This momentous day provides us an opportunity for reflection,” Cartwright Robinson said.

“It reminds us of the bravery, courage, resilience and persistence of those who struggled, like JAGS to ensure that today we can enjoy the fruits of true democracy.”

McCartney was the TCI’s first elected chief minister and the first named national hero.

For the greater portion of his adult life he was a political activist working to empower the people of the Islands.

He died in a plane crash on May 9, 1980, while serving in office.

Also, the authorities should craft an agreement involving healthcare workers to provide guarantees, which allows all healthcare workers to be eligible to earn full salaries while in quarantine, free transportation and medical during the crisis, subsidised by the Government.

Similarly, local banks and other financial institutions should negotiate the refinancing of personal and business loans by lowering monthly payments or freezing loans all together during the pandemic.

Property owners will benefit greatly from this initiative, as it enables landlords to either reduce or suspend rent for unemployed tenants especially.

Likewise, insurance companies should renegotiate their insurance policies to assist vehicle owners.

The coronavirus is global, but it impacts are deeply local.

respective countries or the continued need to be a part of their respective national responses.”

It added: “Telemedicine continues to bridge the physical distance between patients and their doctors during these unprecedented times and currently forms the bedrock of the visiting consultant clinics resumption process at TCI Hospital.”

TCI NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING S U M M A R Y QUARANTINE for prisoners, preparedness for hurricane season and irregular migration were discussed at the latest meeting of the TCI National Security Council (NSC).

Governor Nigel Dakin and Deputy Premier Sean Astwood co-chaired the virtual meeting on Tuesday, May 12.

In attendance as members were Deputy Governor Anya Williams, Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting and the National Security Strategy lead.

Hon. Goldray Ewing, Minister of Home Affairs, Public Utilities and Transportation, was invited to speak on his area of responsibility.

He was joined by the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs, Permanent Secretary of Immigration and Superintendent of HMP Grahame Hawkings.

A statement from the Governor’s Office on Monday (June 1) said that at this meeting the NSC: -Was updated on the nation’s state of preparedness for hurricane season, including the provision of shelters in light of Covid-19, relief supplies and food stocks, communications uplift, command and control structures, preparing NEOC/EOC venues, private sector engagement, strategic support from the UK military team and plans for testing the national disaster plan in advance of this year’s hurricane season.

-Was updated on the recent Royal Navy exercise on West Caicos by RFA Argus designed to test their capabilities, response scenarios across multiple islands and relationship building with TCI stakeholders.

-Was updated on the issue of irregular migration, including use of data to measure and shape responses, the role to be played by Royal Marines in support of the Police Maritime Unit, progress with uplifting radar capability, work to establish a temporary detention centre as a quarantine, illegal immigrants who sought to transit from the TCI on to other countries and pending court cases, the repatriation of other detainees, and collaborative work with local stakeholders and international partners to date.

-Was updated on crime statistics and new trends, ongoing murder investigation work, need for community engagement and witness protection, threats to life and amendments to existing legislation, proposed introduction of community policing in September, ongoing gun crime work and existing gun amnesty, positive impact of Covid-19 related curfew, and a newly developed multi-stakeholder process to tackle illegal migration.

THE SALT CAY NOTE

God’s children all bleed red A note on the curse of racism and a long overdue tribute to Nanny E

W

HAT a week. Regular readers of this column know that it is typically a light-hearted piece about Salt Cay, conversational in tone, entertaining to some, informative to others, never political.

I don’t ‘do’ politics. I never have and never will.

I leave politics to others, who (if only in their own minds) are better at it and enjoy writing about it.

I don’t. I am interested in people, especially ordinary people who tell good stories. Be it the stories of their life, their island, their community.

And Salt Cay is a treasure trove of good stories and excellent storytellers.

This week’s column was going to focus on one such Salt Cay storyteller, and then the news cycle out of the US overtook everyone’s narrative - even on Salt Cay. And all of a sudden, we weren’t only talking about the coronavirus and its effect on our lives, the economy and the country, but we were also talking once again about that centuries old curse of humanity - perhaps scourge is a better word racism.

Muhammad Ali once famously said: “Hating people because of their colour is wrong. And it doesn’t matter which colour does the hating. It’s just plain wrong.”

This may not be the most profound quote you will ever read about the subject, but its power stems from the fact that it really says it all in one short, forceful sentence.

A very early walk on Salt Cay’s Victoria Street. I am lost in thought having just seen the news out of the US, thinking about an interesting segment on CNN. In it, the African American commentator argued that he was far more worried about the veiled racism in the USA and racial undercurrents, than the obvious ‘in your face’ racism.

“It’s not the racist white person who is in the Ku Klux Klan that we have to worry about. It’s the white liberal...walking her dog in Central Park.”

He was referring to a white woman who made a false call to New York City police, claiming that an African American, who asked her to leash her dog while he was bird watching, threatened her life.

As I am thinking about this and the veiled (and sometimes not so veiled) racism that I had occasionally witnessed while I lived in Provo, a red pickup truck pulls up.

Its occupant, a Salt Cay native and good friend, had seen the same news segment and we have an animated conversation about the situation in the US, racism in general and the situation in the TCI. If there’s one thing I really like about Turks and Caicos Islanders, it’s their ability not to beat around the bush.

If, for example, they think you’re fat, they’ll just say it, point blank: “Man you look fat.”

And so it comes as no surprise when my native friend asks me very directly: “So what happened with you T, you don’t seem to have a racist bone on your body. What would you ascribe that to, your parents?”

That’s quite the question at 6am in the morning and I start thinking about my childhood and growing up in the eastern Caribbean.

Sure, I’d like to think that both my parents, one a journalist, the other a human rights activist and lawyer, guided me on a path to open mindedness, tolerance and humanism, but the other key person during my formative years was a wise, old, eastern

Elizabeth, ‘Nanny E’, was my substitute mother (formally my nanny) and would look after me for weeks, sometimes months on end when my parents were off island on work assignments.

Through her I was introduced to Caribbean culture, cooking, music, history and so much more.

She was the first person to teach me English.

And long before I appreciated intellectually that so-called racial differences are literally just skin deep and that genetics and human evolutionary history do not support the traditional concepts of race, Elizabeth laid it all out for me: “We’re all God’s children and we all bleed red.”

And that was that. She never saw me as that little, white boy and I never thought of her as my black nanny.

Skin colour was simply no issue and consequently I was off to a good start in life, as far as racial prejudices (or lack thereof) were concerned.

And there was the long-winded answer to my native friend’s question. This column is dedicated, with fondest memories, to ‘Nanny E’.

Employees from Beaches Resort and Spa collected 140 bags of litter during the clean-up

Resort workers clean up streets MORE than 30 employees from Beaches Resort and Spa took to the streets of Providenciales and picked up 140 bags of litter last week.

They walked between Lower Bight, Royal Avenue and the public beach access road as well as the picnic area adjacent to the Key West Village during the activity.

Beaches general manager Jamie McAnally joined the group in the early morning clean-up on May 26.

“I am very proud of the team and the contribution they have made to this clean-up,” he said.

“It’s good to know that even during this challenging time they still have the heart and the spirit to do something good for the community.”

McAnally said the condition of the public beach access road and picnic area was quite disheartening

and in dire need of care.

“The amount of garbage collected in that small area was immense,” he added.

“As a community, we have to do better to protect this beautiful island. So, I encourage beachgoers to ‘pack out what you pack in’ and leave the area clean for others to enjoy.”

Beaches Resort has assisted its 1,800 plus team members with food and financial support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Additionally, the resort has donated more than 15 thousand pounds of food items to charities such as the Salvation Army, TCI Red Cross, the Soroptimist Club, Provo Children’s Home and the Catholic Mission.

These organisations assisted with distributing the donated items to the families that are most affected on Providenciales as well as the sister islands.

Burt: we can’t sweep racism under the rug in Bermuda SYSTEMIC racism in Bermuda and around the world must not be swept under the rug, the Premier warned this week.

David Burt reminded that, while the issue of race has been put in the international spotlight in the wake of the death of black American George Floyd at the hands of police in Minnesota, Bermuda has its own share of issues to address.

He said: “How can we pretend to be outraged by systemic racism everywhere else except here at home? “[Racism] has been with us for a long time and sweeping it under the rug, the call and accusations of persons playing the race card is just minimising real issues.

“The real issues are that racism exists in the world, racism exists in Bermuda and, though we might celebrate a black leader or other things, that does not mean that the systemic racism that exists in the country has withdrawn.”

The Premier said that while the deaths of black men and women internationally had sparked outrage in Bermuda, more work was required on home soil.

“Our future depends on our ability to confront and deal with our past,” he said.

“We must never forget or diminish the people who live among us and who have experienced first-hand discriminatory laws, policies and practices stating where they can go, where they can live, what they could own or what they could do or aspire to achieve.”

Mr Burt said the Government had worked to introduce legislation to address systemic inequalities in Bermuda, and added that the island could benefit only from true equality.

“The issue of systemic and institutional racism is holding us back from our own potential,” Mr Burt said.

“We have never as a party been frightened to do so, but there have been people in this community who have been afraid, so I welcome that they take up the mantle and recognise that we have systemic racism and injustices.”

Mr Burt noted the work of the late Eva Hodgson, a celebrated Bermudian civil rights campaigner who passed away on Friday, and said her work must be

Hurricane season starts with record JUST two days into the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Cristobal was churning in the Gulf of Mexico.

It was the third Atlantic storm powerful enough to get a name this season; no other year on record has seen three named Atlantic storms so early. On average, the third storm forms around August 13, according to AccuWeather.

The World Meteorological Association assigns names to storms whose wind speeds exceed 39 mph (63 km/h) – that’s the threshold at which a cyclone is considered a tropical storm.

Cristobal’s winds topped that on Tuesday; then it struck the Bay of Campeche on Wednesday. The storm could build to hurricane strength as it approaches the US Gulf Coast.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has projected that this hurricane season will be “abovenormal” in the Atlantic Ocean.

That means six to 10 hurricanes, with three to six of those reaching Category 3 or higher (that’s considered a “major hurricane”).

An average season sees roughly six hurricanes, with three becoming major. But the Atlantic Ocean has been producing highly active hurricane seasons since 1995, according to NOAA. This season began on June 1. But by then, Tropical Storm Arthur had already skimmed the North Carolina coast and Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall in Charleston, South Carolina.

Before NOAA’s projection for the season, more than a dozen forecasts from other government agencies, research institutions, and private companies had projected that storm activity would be “above average,” with at least six hurricanes, according to CNN. Some groups are even expecting an “extremely active” season, with more than nine

hurricanes.

“In general, the consensus between seasonal hurricane forecasts this year is greater than it has been the past few years,” Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist at Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Science, told CNN. The odds of any tropical cyclone becoming a major hurricane are increasing as human activity warms the globe.

A study from researchers at NOAA and the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that each new decade over the last 40 years has brought an 8 percent increase in the chance that a storm turns into a major hurricane.

“We have a significantly building body of evidence that these storms have already changed in very substantial ways, and all of them are dangerous,” James Kossin, an atmospheric scientist at NOAA and the study’s lead author, told the Washington Post.

The findings, published in May, were based on 40 years of satellite data.

Hurricanes are getting stronger and wetter because because climate change is causing ocean and air temperatures to climb – 2019 was the second-hottest year on record, and it closed the hottest decade ever recorded.

Hurricanes feed on warm water.

What’s more, higher water temperatures lead to sea-level rise, which increases the risk of flooding during high tides and storms surges. Warmer air also holds more atmospheric water vapour, which enables tropical storms to strengthen and unleash more precipitation.

“Almost all of the damage and mortality caused by hurricanes is done by major hurricanes,” Kossin told CNN. “Increasing the likelihood of having a major hurricane will certainly increase this risk.” (Sciencealert)

Tropical Storm Cristobal is expected to reach the US on Sunday evening.

World News Bail set at up to $1M for three ex-Minneapolis police officers THREE now-former Minneapolis police officers had bail set at up to $1 million at their arraignment Thursday on charges of aiding and abetting a fourth cop in the alleged murder of George Floyd, a black man whose Memorial Day death while in their custody has led to more than a week of protests nationwide over police brutality.

But with certain conditions, the three men could be released on bail of $750,000 apiece, Judge Paul Scoggin said, before ordering them to next appear in court on June 29.

“I’m hard-pressed to come up with any comparisons in this case,” Scoggin said, as he agreed with the recommendation

by Minnesota Assistant Attorney General Matthew Frank that unconditional bail of $1 million apiece, and $750,000 bail apiece with conditions, was warranted.

Those bail conditions include not working in any law enforcement capacity, surrendering any firearms, voiding their firearm permits, having no contact with Floyd’s family and agreeing to waive extradition should they leave the state of Minnesota.

The hearing in Hennepin County District Court came a day after Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison charged the men:, J. Alexander Kueng, 26, Thomas Lane, 37, and 34-year-old Tou Thao, with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

The trio had assisted another Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, in arresting the 46-yearold Floyd on May 25 on suspicion of making a purchase with a counterfeit $20 bill.

Chauvin, who is white, knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, during which Floyd said repeatedly, “I can’t breathe.”

None of the three entered pleas to the charges after they were brought into Scoggin’s courtroom to sit behind frosted glass facing the judge, out of view of others present in the room.

Frank argued for the high bail amounts by citing widespread public knowledge of the case, and the risk that the defendants would flee to avoid the charges, which could result in long prison sentences if they are convicted. The murder-related charge carries a 40-year maximum sentence.

Lawyers for each of the men had asked for muchlower bail amounts.

At the same time as the hearing, a memorial for Floyd, one of several planned, was being held in downtown Minneapolis.

Chauvin, 44, is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The top murder charge carries a maximum possible prison sentence of 40 year if he is convicted of it.

Ellison added the second-degree murder charge against Chauvin on Wednesday, when he lodged the first charges of any kind against the three other men. Chauvin remains in custody.

All four officers were fired a day after Floyd died, when graphic video of his arrest went viral.

Thomas Plunkett, a defense attorney for Kueng, in arguing for bail as low as $50,000, offered condolences to Floyd’s family at the arraignment hearing.

From 8 June the government will require all travellers to the UK to quarantine for 14 days or face a £1,000 fine.

But BA, which is under huge financial strain due to the pandemic, has called it “another blow to our industry”.

Owner IAG did not give a

reason for not attending and declined further comment.

However, the operator is understood to be annoyed at what it saw as a lack of consultation over the quarantine’s introduction.

The BBC has asked the Home Office for comment.

Saunders family donates football boots to FA NATIONAL U15 boys’ team player Michael Saunders and his family recently made a timely donation of bags of football boots to the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA).

The FA noted in a release that the footwear would be donated to players in need.

“The Saunders family’s donation gives the gift of “opportunity” to many children across the Turks and Caicos Islands. We are forever grateful, and thank them from the bottom of our hearts.”

The release also appealed for other similar donations as the sport continues to grow in all islands of the TCI. “If you play for a team, have children who have outgrown their boots, or have access to used football boots in good condition, we have an unlimited demand in both children and adult sizes. As a community we can work together to ensure that no child misses out on the opportunity to play.”

The donated football boots would be given to players in need.

NBA: Disney World Resort set to host rest of 2020 season THE rest of the NBA season is set to be played at Florida’s Disney World Resort from 31 July.

The season was suspended on 11 March because of coronavirus measures.

Thirteen Western Conference teams and nine Eastern Conference teams will contest eight games each to determine seedings for the playoffs.

The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando includes a 5,000-seat indoor basketball facility.

Under the NBA’s proposals, all 22 teams will be based at the resort and games will be played without spectators to minimise the threat of

Covid-19.

On Thursday the NBA board of governors approved the plan to resume the season.

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) must agree to the plan before it is confirmed. It is expected to vote during a conference call on Friday.

HOW WILL THE FORMAT WORK? The Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies are in play-off positions in the Western

Conference.

The Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic currently occupy play-off spots in the Eastern Conference.

Those 16 teams will be joined by the New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference and the Washington Wizards in the Eastern Conference.

TEAM sports in the TCI would return next month, but from this week, some sports can re-start, according to information from the government.

Phase 2A begins on June 5 and will run until June 22. During this time, non-contact, non-team sports and personal sport/fitness training will commence.

Traditionally, non-contact sports include the likes of golf, swimming, tennis etc., where the players are physically separated as to make it nearly impossible for them to make physical contact during the course of a game. In the Covid-19 era, different rule and approaches might be necessary, especially when things can be touched by more than one players, such as the ball in tennis.

In July (6-22), contact sports, such as football and rugby can re-commence during Phase 3 of the re-opening. However, due to the nature of the contact there might be different rules in place.

According to the government, social distancing of six feet

between persons, enhanced hygiene measures such as frequent hand-washing and cleaning as well as the use of face coverings in public spaces will be required during all phases.

Meanwhile, at least one of the competitions, which was prematurely stopped when the lockdown started, the Gilley’s Enterprises Provo Premier League (PPL) has decided to end.

The PPL executive body is expected to hold a meeting on Monday to officially decide on the way forward. Re-starting the league though is not on the table due to the time factor.

“No more PPL until the new one starts in the autumn. This is because no football was allowed until July when it is too hot and when many people may travel (from 22nd),” PPL president Steve Kendrew noted.

Along with contact sports, sporting events, gyms and fitness centres can also open during Phase 3.

We should not be victimised because we are black – Williams on Floyd’s death and experiences with racism FOR Delano Williams, the senseless killing of George Floyd by a White police officer in the US was a sad reminder that racial inequality is still prevalent in today’s society. He is however happy that people of all ethnicities are standing up to oppression and is cautiously optimistic that there will be change.

“I felt really really disappointed; it was heartless, it was senseless and I feel like racism has been going on for a while now and I hope this incident brings about change. His death should not go in vain. And all must realise that we should not be treated differently just because we are black.”

Williams noted that although he endorses the protests and understands the frustration, he is not in support of all the actions.

“I think the protesting is good, but I don’t like how they are vandalising a lot of innocent people’s places, and I don’t like the violent ways in which they are doing it; but I feel like if this is going to get the point across to some of these legislators, they should continue protesting until there is justice.”

TCI’s lone Olympian says that he is a proud black man and is very comfortable in his skin, but racism and racists have ways of penetrating that sense of pride and can undermine even the strongest of minds.

For the ace sprinter, who lives and trains in Jamaica, but competes for the UK, although his level of exposure has been minimal compared to some in the US, the notion that he is seen as different is always on his mind.

“I’ve never experienced racism on the track before, but I run for a White man’s country and it plays on my mind as to how I would be treated, but no one has ever showed me that form of racism before.”

The 26-year-old said that outside of athletics, he has experienced racism several times over the years, pointing to an episode last year in a supermarket in Italy, where he was discriminated against because of his skin colour.

in the TCI, he did experience a different form of it in Jamaica.

“Here in Jamaica there is a lot of ‘colourism’, in terms of skin colour. I met girls, who told me that I’m cute and everything, I look alright, but my skin complexion is not what they want.”

Williams sees this as structural racism, which has lodged itself in

the very fabric of our society.

He noted that until black people are seen as equals in all facets of life, discrimination would always be widespread.

“We black people are very beautiful, very intelligent; we are good people, slavery days have been done a long time. We suffered enough.”

For Williams, he has been able to mostly undermine racism and its subtle experiences, due to early support.

“I know what I’m worth. My momma always tell me that I’m a handsome black boy and I should not be worrying about a lot of stuff and I feel like a lot of people need to understand that we should not be

treated differently. That black lives matter and we do matter.”

The 100M and 200M specialist noted that having all the officers charged is a step in the right direction, but until the system is completed overhaul, until there is equality right across the board, Floyd’s death would continue to repeat itself.
