Cronyism at play in Salt Cay aerodrome closure, ex-premier accuses

BY DELANA ISLES FORMER Premier Dr Rufus Ewing has spoken out against the closure of the Salt Cay aerodrome due to a dilapidated runway, blaming the new Government for not following through on his administration’s plans.

In a strongly worded statement to the press this week, Ewing stated that the closure was completely avoidable if the short-term plans for the redevelopment of the Turks and Caicos Islands airports were followed through.

Those plans included the redevelopment of the Providenciales International Airport followed by the South Caicos International Airport and then the Salt Cay Airport runway resurfacing.

On Friday, July 7, news of the closure was posted online as airlines informed booked passengers and customers that they were forced to suspend flights into the island as the aerodrome had been closed.

The closure was due to the expiration of the June 26 Salt Key Aerodrome certificate without renewal by the Turks and Caicos Islands Airport Authority (TCIAA).

As indicted by the TCIAA, the decision not to renew the certificate was due to long term safety concerns relating to the runway surface and associated areas.

On Tuesday, the former premier

pointed out that the monies were assigned for the runway to be done, yet nothing was done to correct the defective areas of the facility.

He stated that the withholding of the revenue due to the Turks and Caicos Islands Government by the Turks and Caicos Islands Airport Authority combined with the financing of the TCIAA loan was approved by the Government for the sole purpose of development works to be done on South Caicos and Salt Cay airports.

“It is a disgrace that works at the South Caicos Airport is delayed because of the current Government’s position that it does not want to work with the successful bidder of the tender who is the owner of a Turks and Caicos Islands company of formidable reputation,” he said.

He added that the delay of the South Caicos Airport project is not only negatively affecting the people and development of South Caicos but also the resurfacing of the Salt Cay runway and in turn the livelihood and economy of that island and by extension the Turks and Caicos Islands.

“There would be a lot of finger pointing in days to come as to who is to blame for this unfortunate situation, but at least the previously administration had a plan and was moving full speed ahead.

follow the plan, accept the successful bidder instead of halting works in progress to review the tender process with hopes to engineer political cronyism.”

The former premier further stated that the country is now faced with a situation that could have been addressed with a smooth transition from South Caicos to Salt Cay over the last six months.

“It now has to be addressed as a matter of urgency at a greater mobilisation cost as the people of Salt Cay need reliable air access in and out of Salt Cay now,” Ewing said.

Registry of Lands officer under investigation

BY DELANA ISLES THE INTEGRITY Commission is currently engaged in an investigation regarding alleged acts of corruption committed by an officer in the Registry of Lands, this publication has learned.

Contacted on Thursday (July 13), for confirmation on the investigation, Director of the Commission, Eugene Otuonye QC, stated: “I have no comment on that, but we will issue a press release on that very soon.”

However, despite Otuonye’s reticence to comment, reliable sources have informed the Weekly

News that the officer is being questioned by the commission for acts of corruption which involve the falsification of land documents over the period of one year.

The documents were allegedly for persons who are deceased, nonTCI residents, and others who are not the owners of property in the Islands.

The questions allegedly being asked also involve private and Crown land parcels, subdivision and transfer of land belonging to dead people, illegal transfer of property on which bank mortgage charges have been placed, receiving bribes from high profile lawyers in the

TCI, and other alleged acts of corruption.

Sources revealed that the commission has filed documents in the court to solicit the assistance of the Registrar of Lands to answer these questions.

The officer is also allegedly being implicated in activity related to the ongoing Special Investigation and Prosecution Trial (SIPT).

Several other allegations are being investigated in relation to the officer’s duties at the Land Registry.

These involve documents that were removed and funds that were improperly used for departmental upgrade and personal use.

Flight operations restricted in Salt Cay

BY DAISY HANDFIELD FLIGHT operations to and from Salt Cay have been restricted due to the expiration of its aerodrome certificate.

This is according to terminal and marketing manager of TCI Airports Authority, Lavern Skippings.

A statement was issued by TCI Airports Authority, stating that it recognises the critical role that air transportation plays in bridging the community of Salt Cay with Providenciales and Grand Turk.

The statement added that the authority remains committed to the provision of safe facilities and services to the aviation

community.

Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson said that the Government deeply regrets the serious inconvenience that the temporary suspension of flights into and out of Salt Cay have caused to the travelling public.

She said: “…particularly the aged residents and the already challenged businesses.

“This is nothing short of a sad turn of events which unfortunately has worsened over the years due to poor or no maintenance and which has led us to a place where safety must be our number one concern for the travelling public.”

The Premier went on to explain

that she recently met with the CEOs of both the Airports Authority, John Smith, and the Civil Aviation Authority, Thomas Swann.

Also joining the meeting was the chairmen of the Airports Authority Board, EJ Saunders.

Cartwright Robinson said that she was informed of the safety concerns due to the dilapidated conditions of the island’s runway.

The expired certificate issued by the regulator the Civil Aviation Authority could not be renewed, she added.

However, she concluded that efforts are underway to address the regulator’s concerns as a matter of urgency.

Freedom of information a Government priority, says Premier

BY OLIVIA ROSE FREEDOM of information legislation is high on the Government’s agenda, according to Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson.

The assurance came in response to questions posed at a recent press conference concerning the timely dissemination of pertinent information to the media and by extension the public.

She said: “It is definitely on our legislation agenda. Of course, you know the constitution would have provided for that legislation to be introduced, and persons will remember that I was a person who brought a private members motion, so the freedom of information legislation will be coming forward.”

She pointed out that as it relates to the circulation of police information the administration would like to see a more vigorous approach adopted by the public relations department of the force.

“We’ve expressed our concerns as well in getting information out to the public. It is important to have raw data but it’s also important to explain the data at times.

“I can’t say how often the Police Commissioner would put out data - I

think it’s customarily just at the end of the year and in my former life as Leader of the Opposition I used to have to ask when we are going to see the statistics.

“And that is because there’s still some reconciliation I understand that goes on within the police force, but I will say to you, we’re all in the business of transparency and I think we need greater communication between the police and people.”

Turning her attention to the responsibility of the police force to foster a greater connection with the populace she noted that such a paradigm shift requires an all handson deck approach.

“I think it is important for two reasons - so persons can be alert, and in persons I include tourists.

“Last year I did an interview and I said we have to be careful how we continue to market Turks and Caicos.

“We’re still a very safe jurisdiction, our crime rate is still exceptionally low but we need to say to tourists be vigilant.”

She added: “Certainly freedom of information will come; you can expect an increase with how often we provide information to you as ministers, and then you can also hear us from our quiet

walls saying to the commissioner, talk to the people of the Turks and Caicos a little bit more.”

The Premier underscored that while the freedom of information legislation is a significant legislation, the culture of secrecy and fear has to be eradicated.

“So while you’ll have freedom of information, it’s important for us to break that culture of just keeping information to ourselves, you

have never really been forced by many departments to be open and transparent.

“I don’t think people are hiding anything, I think it’s just the culture that has to be broken, because information will certainly help in many different ways.”

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION EDUCATES SOCIETY Back in 2015 as Leader of the

Opposition, Cartwright Robinson said that the “freedom of information ordinance is much more than just ferreting information out of Government but will also ensure accuracy, ward off tomfoolery and educate society.”

She noted that information is important to ensue good governance, to enlighten, avert mischief and to create a more informed citizenry.

She said also that the news media, which she described as a very important member of the population, has been the recipient of a great deal of broadsides by some members of the public regarding accuracy of information, but with such an ordinance, such antagonism could be lessened.

“Quite often we hear accusations against the media of misrepresentation of facts. This therefore is a great tool to ensure that the correct information is disseminated.

“As the media is an important member of our citizenry, who help to disseminate information, educate and to remind all of us what we said and to hold all of us into account,” she said.

Young man mysteriously dies in hospital – A 29-year-old man wanted by police in relation to the death

BY DAISY HANDFIELD DETAILS surrounding the death of a 24-year-old man on Tuesday (July 11) are limited, as police are yet to locate his next of kin.

The Kew Town resident passed away at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre in Providenciales at about 2.31am.

Police say that detectives are treating his death as unexplained and that an autopsy will be conducted

soon to determine the exact cause of death.

A 29-year-old man named Richard Gail, also known as ‘Richboi,’ is wanted for questioning on the matter.

Commissioner of Police James Smith expressed condolences to the family of the deceased man on behalf of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.

He said: “We assure you that a thorough probe is being conducted in this case by our detectives and we

will do everything possible to find the person or persons responsible for this to bring them to justice.

“At this time, we are unable to release the name of the victim because we have not been able to locate his next of kin.”

The new prison officers march into their graduation

Gov’t beefs up security at Her Majesty’s Prison

BY OLIVIA ROSE EIGHT new prison officers have been recruited at Her Majesty’s prison in Grand Turk following an intensive training course.

The joint recruitment training programme was facilitated by the Ministry of Home Affairs Transportation and Communication and Her Majesty’s Prison Service.

It was delivered locally over a three week stint and covered areas that will help the new recruits to understand their roles and responsibilities prior to being assigned to a full schedule of normal duties.

The officers were awarded certificates at a graduation ceremony at the Salem Baptist Church in Grand Turk on Friday, July 7.

Several prominent Government officials attended the ceremony and delivered brief remarks.

Among them were acting Governor Anya Williams, Minister with responsibility for the Prison, Vaden

Delroy Williams, Permanent Secretary Clara Gardiner OBE, and Prison Superintendent Steven Barrett.

Williams commended the new recruits on their noteworthy achievement, outlined their expectations and highlighted the critical role they each play in operating an efficient, effective and secure prison system.

These remarks were preceded by those given by Governor John Freeman who visited the team during the first week of training.

He met prison officers at the introductory training on June 20 at the Salem Baptist Church in Grand Turk.

The Governor took the time to meet each new officer and spoke to the group about the importance of the role that they are about to take on.

He told them: “The prison and prison officers are a vital part of the total security and crime prevention effort in TCI.

“The Superintendent of HM Prison, Mr Steven Barrett, who is doing an excellent job, and his staff deserve our support in an often difficult and challenging task.

“I applaud the commitment of TCIG to the near-term renovation of the prison.

“I welcome also the intention to develop a rehabilitation policy for prisoners and for former prisoners on re-entering the local community.”

According to the Governor this represents the largest number of prison officers recruited to the prison service in recent times.

He noted that in addition to increasing manpower, the Government is demonstrating its commitment to improving the prison system by upgrading the physical estate.

Equally important, plans are underway to introduce joint prison and private sector based prevention programmes to equip inmates with skills that will help them succeed, once they return to society.

ACCESS into Glass Shack’s Windward Road from Leeward Highway has been closed. According to a statement from Road Traffic Department the decision was made because of a number of accidents which resulted in deaths, injuries and property damage.

Now we will see more illegal U-turns at Cherokee, thus more accidents.

More changes

Way too many accidents in that vicinity. They needed to do something.

They need to examine a few other accident prone streets and implement something similar.

A proper roundabout is what’s needed at this and many other locations across Providenciales.

Long overdue! Now all they need to do is a similar closure at Central Square (where virtually none of the turners actually go into the plaza), and enforce the ‘no U-turn’ provision at Cherokee Road (and keep the jitney drivers from stopping in the Westbound right turn lane).

Then maybe, just maybe, traffic in Provo will start to bear some resemblance to that in the real world!

Bad move

With a little more thought they could have allowed turns from westbound Leeward Highway on to Windward Road.

Governor and Premier attend Brexit meeting in London

BY OLIVIA ROSE UK ministers met representatives of the overseas territories this week to discuss the impact of Brexit following the triggering of Article 50 in March.

Governor John Freeman and Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson attended the second Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) meeting in London.

During the meeting attendees discussed the possible benefits for the overseas territories arising from Brexit as well as engagement with the UK government.

They also engaged in discussions on the potential impact Brexit could have on the territories’ political, economic, constitutional

and cultural future relationship with the UK. According to a TCI Government press release, UK Minister for Exiting the European Union Robin Walker and Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad engaged with guests at the meeting on Wednesday (July 12).

The EU Committee also held an evidence session on the implications of Brexit for the British overseas territories.

Attendees were updated on the UK government’s ongoing preparations for EU negotiations and action taken since the inaugural Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council on European Negotiations in February.

Ocean Club robbers sentenced to five years each

BY DELANA ISLES JUDGE Robert Schuster has sentenced convicted burglars Paul Missick, 24, and Jamal Missick Thompson, 25, to five years in prison following the submission of a pre-sentencing report.

The sentencing, which was delayed due to the preparation of the report, was handed down on Wednesday (July 12) after both men were found guilty of burglary back in May by a sevenmember jury.

The two men had in July 2016 invaded the hotel room of two tourists and robbed them of $40,000 in jewellery and cash while they slept.

Thompson Missick was represented by attorney-at-law Lara Maroof-Missick and Paul Missick’s defence was handled

by Guy Chapman.

The charges were laid against the two men shortly after the shocking robbery against a

vacationing couple.

The crime was committed at the Ocean Club East resort in Providenciales, at about 1.58am.

One of the victims contacted 911 and reported that two men entered their hotel room and stole over $5,000 in cash, two Rolex watches, along with an engagement ring and IDs. One of the victims Shameka Watson told the police that one of culprit was being restrained by her boyfriend, Tyshawn Corbett.

When officers arrived on the scene, the victims pointed to the man who was unsuccessful in getting away.

Just three days after, police officials announced that the second man, Jamal Missick, turned himself in to police authorities after a nationwide ‘wanted’ poster was issued for his arrest.

Ministers continue engagement with overseas territories as part of Brexit process

discussed the areas of priority for their territories and ministers reaffirmed the UK government commitment to ensure the interests of the overseas territories are taken into account as the UK prepares to leave the EU. Speaking after the meeting, Minister for Exiting the European Union Robin Walker noted that negotiations to leave the European Union are now underway.

He said: “We are working hard to deliver a deal that works for everyone including our friends in the overseas territories.

“We have engaged extensively with the overseas territories already and will continue to make sure their interests are taken into account as the UK leaves the EU.”

Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon pointed out that the territories are integral to what defines Britain on the global stage and to Britain’s influence across the world.

“I look forward to continuing engagement with the territories on the key challenges they face as a result of Brexit and to work collaboratively on the great opportunities that lie ahead,” he said.

BY OLIVIA ROSE THE TURKS and Caicos Islands this week joined scores of fellow Commonwealth nations which are taking part in the 3,388-day long, time-honoured curtain-raiser of the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay.

On Tuesday (July 11) the Queen’s Baton left Jamaica and officially arrived in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is currently making its way around the territory.

Acting Governor Anya Williams and Acting Premier Sean Astwood received the Queen’s Baton at Providenciales International Airport.

Unlike its better-known cousin, the Olympic Torch Relay, the Queen’s Baton is the travelling torch of the Commonwealth Games and will visit 71 nations and territories before it finally ends its journey in host country Australia.

Once there, it will be opened and

the Queen’s message will be read aloud at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

Former athletes, current athletes, sporting bodies, civic, church, community and country leaders will all participate in moving the Queen’s Baton around the TCI. The baton has special features, including neon lights and a Global Positioning System (GPS).

Rita Gardiner, secretary general of the Commonwealth Games Committee in the TCI, at a press conference on June 12 told media that the baton will travel from South Caicos to Salt Cay then to Grand Turk through Providenciales, North to Middle Caicos, back to North Caicos and into Providenciales.

In that final stretch, it will be carried into the Bight Park by Tourism Minister Ralph Higgs and the entire Commonwealth Youth Games Team, which numbers 31 athletes.

Science pupils learn about health professions

BY DAISY HANDFIELD ABOUT 15 science students attended the opening ceremony of the Clinic Exploration Programme, an annual initiative to educate students on the ins and outs of working as a health professional.

The students, along with health professionals, gathered at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre in Providenciales on Friday, July 7, for the ceremony.

The programme is a collaborative effort between TCI InterHealth Canada and healthcare stakeholders in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Every year TCI InterHealth Canada selects a few high school students who are interested in careers in the medical field to participate in the four to six week programme.

Coordinator Dr Jameiko Harvey said that there was a notable increase

this year.

“This year we had 77 students

apply and what I am most impressed about is that we 10 males present here

today, even though more applied.

“That number has always been down over the years, so I am impressed with that number,” he said.

One of the participants Cristhofer Lugo said that it was his second year partaking in the programme and that he hopes to learn from every aspect of the medical field.

Another participant, Rebeka Charles said that this was her third year and she was excited.

“Every time I come here there is always something new to learn,” she said.

Dr Harvey said: “It is important that these children understand how important they are to building healthcare in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

The students will rotate through various departments across the public and private healthcare facilities over the next four to six weeks.

Border Control opens new branch at Sammy Been Plaza

BY OLIVIA ROSE THE MINISTRY of Border Control and Employment opened the doors of its second branch last week.

The ministry’s new location boasts an improved customer service centre complete with an information desk.

The branch is also furnished with a corporate customer service centre on its lower level, as well as a third reception area on its upper level which services the registration and citizenship customers as well as those seeking to register for employment.

The new building which is situated a stone’s throw away from Providenciales International Airport will comfortably accommodate its entire Provo-based staff, totalling some 52 people.

Visiting the newly opened facility on (July 6) Minister of Border Control

and Employment, Sean Astwood expressed his satisfaction with the early completion of the facility.

He said: “I am extremely pleased to see the completion and opening of this new office which is a part of this Government’s overarching plans to deliver extraordinary office space and improved technological solutions to our customers.”

Astwood noted that the new location also forms a part of the ministry’s re-branding initiative which will revolutionise the way work is executed.

He said: “We are excited to finally be seeing tangible progress; this is only the first step.

“The next will be the launch of our online integrated management software systems which will allow the convenience of online application for services from the comfort of your homes.

Man, 72, slapped with $55k bail for 88 forgery charges A MAN (name not disclosed) has been arrested and charged by the Financial Crimes Unit, police revealed this week.

Following intense investigations detectives of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police have arrested and charged a 72-year-old man from Providenciales.

He is charged with 88 counts of forgery, 88 counts of uttering forged documents, one count of theft and one count of use of criminal property

in connection with a report made on April 10.

The charges stem from a report that was made, whereby a man stole a large sum of money from an association body which he represented.

Police investigations revealed that the offences were committed between March 2009 and December 2011.

He is presently on $55,000 police bail and is expected to appear at the Magistrates’ Court later this month.

Handling stolen good lands man in jail THIRTY-two-year-old Makenson Legiste has been sentenced to one month in prison after he pleaded guilty to three counts of handling stolen goods by receiving.

Legiste was ordered to pay $300 for each count or serve 30 days imprisonment to run concurrently.

His co-accused were a 36-yearold woman and her 31-year-old husband, both relatives of his.

The charges stem from a police report made on June 12 by a resident of a villa in Long Bay Beach Drive.

He said that upon returning home at 8.39pm, he noticed that his villa had been burgled and some articles of clothing and electronics were missing.

Investigations were launched, which led to the arrest of the trio.

The woman was charged with one count of handling stolen goods by receiving and is expected to appear before a magistrate next month.

While her husband was charged with four counts of handling stolen goods by disposal and has since been remanded to prison.

“In addition to these improvements, the ministry has already undertaken the initiative to improve service delivery for all products across the board, with a special focus on passports, births and other certificates, labour clearances and work permits.

“The team has shown remarkable improvement which I am sure will be of great benefit to the public.”

to see the opening of the first phase of the new TCIG Customer Service Centre in Providenciales.”

She underscored that fact that the Ministry of Border Control is one of the most highly trafficked offices in Providenciales.

She said: “We have heard the complaints of customers and are happy to now accommodate them in a more spacious and well equipped environment.

“In the months to come there will be further improvements as we seek to launch our e-government services

platform and other services.

“We thank our staff for their continued hard work and dedication and our customers for your patience and understanding.”

Full purchase of the now Government-owned compound was completed in March and plans are underway for the renovation of the two remaining buildings, one of which will be home to the Immigration Department, which currently remains at the Sam Harvey Building in Downtown Providenciales.

High school gets new library

BY DAISY HANDFIELD PUPILS of the Clement Howell High School in Providenciales will be the recipients of a fully equipped library this coming September, courtesy of the Sandals Foundation.

The foundation has adopted the school and plans to carry out various improvements and projects at the school in the coming years.

Press officer manager for Beaches Turks and Caicos, Elanor Krzanowski, explained that the chain of resorts has had a relationship with the school for the past six years.

She said: “We have been actively supporting literacy and education since our inception with the partnership and now I am very happy that we are able to build something tangible at the school that would benefit the whole student body.”

Krzanowski added that The Sandals Foundation’s contribution includes the financing of the renovation of the building, the installation of shelves, the painting, and everything that will make the library conducive to learning.

Beaches Turks and Caicos will also be donating over 1,000 books through their scholastic partnership with the Sandals Foundation.

Principal Kadean Cunningham said that this is a much-needed project for the school.

“The school needs a school library and [Beaches Turks and Caicos and the Sandals Foundation] were very excited in coming on board with us in really putting this project of having a school library into flourishing.

“A number of our students do not have the opportunity to conduct research because they do not have computers at home; they don’t have a number of the facilities in terms of books, so the library will provide them with this opportunity.

“They will also have the opportunity of doing research for their school base assessment.”

She added: “This is something that is very important and we find that teachers to can have more one-

on-one in guiding the children.”

Staff at Beaches Turks and Caicos will also be collecting books from willing guests to donate to the school.

“We are partners with Pack for Purpose, which basically encourages visitors and residents alike to donate five pounds of school supplies to countries that they visit,” Krzanowski said.

“Turks and Caicos has been one of the prominent countries on their website and guests have been very generous, some even donating over five pounds of school supplies.

“It’s a great programme and a great way to use tourism to fuel education and literacy promotion in the Turks and Caicos.”

The reassuring, protective voice THERE are some TCIs who are spiritually sensitive and have encounters they find revealing, and which convince them they have been contacted by someone close to them who has ‘crossed over’.

They feel these experiences either advise them of what’s to come that will affect them, settle their fears, or provide answers to what concerns them so they are consequently relieved.

One of these experiences involves hearing a voice which reassures them everything will be okay, and causes them to feel they are being protected by a loved one who sees beyond the here and now and possesses knowledge of things to come.

A recent article in Psychology Today tackles this issue. It notes, that these experiences are normal and spiritual, and occur when someone is contacted directly and spontaneously by a family member or friend who has ‘crossed over’.

The writer says that hearing the voice of a loved one as though he or she was in the room fits the category of one of these experiences.

But is it possible to hear a voice with no identifiable accent while driving a vehicle?

evening class appointment started her vehicle when she noticed the gas tank was empty.

She was encouraged to drive anyway since a smattering of gas could still be in the tank.

She drove cautiously wanting to conserve what little gas was left for the drive back home.

After class, she got into the car but the thought of running out of gas bothered her, particularly when she arrived at an area with a high concentration of bush on each side of the street.

She feared if the engine stopped she might have to walk on a fairly lonely road with no homes nearby where she could call for help and where prowlers frequented.

The teacher was apprehensive as she drove on. About ten minutes from home and becoming agitated about the vehicle stopping, she

experienced a sense of dread.

It was then she heard a voice which was clear and reassuring.

It said: “No need to be excited.”

At first she thought it was the radio but it was off. And no one else was in the car. But she felt protected, and assured of her safety.

She relaxed and arrived home safely. Whose voice was it?

Where did it come from? And how did it know the driver’s state of mind?

Did the driver’s soul/spirit make contact with others in another dimension?

Did the soul “watchers/ guardians” give her assurance all will be well so that she no longer felt worried?

And is not this comforting, protective voice available to all once we listen deeply?

Jobling took over from, Carla (Peta Gay) Blake, the immediate past president.

The new president said his first course of action is to expand membership bring in more local professionals who have an interest in giving back to the community.

He said coupled with this, greater effort will be made to engage the younger members to get them involved in the community activities.

Jobling who has been a Rotarian for over 30 years said: “We also plan to take advantage of Rotary District and Global Grants to subsidise projects that we do locally.

“While informing the community of the work that we carry out on the Turks and Caicos Islands, such as providing eyeglasses and dictionaries for young schoolchildren and the collection of food donations to give to the elderly.”

Immediate past president Carla (Peta Gay) Blake summed up her year as president, as thrilling.

Blake who opted to deliver her final speech as president at a previous Rotary meeting said: “We hit the ground running with our first general meeting, held July 7, 2016, with much anticipation from members, especially after inducting six new members and a transfer of one Rotaractor at Changeover.

“I believe and have witnessed that members are always optimistic about a new Rotary year.

“Team fantastic was in place and prepared themselves for the ride.

“The year started with RI updating the standard Rotary Club constitution to reflect council on legislation enactment and amendments.”

She explained that this new legislation was designed to assist clubs with changes to their own bylaws.

“You would know that we do not operate on our own we are governed by principals and laws set out by Rotary International, and as time evolves, they recognise that it is

necessary to adapt to change.

“In this light, RI set out new rules to allow ‘club flexibility’ - they concluded that research and members experiences, showed that when clubs have more freedom to decide how and when they hold their meetings, who they invite to become members, and what member engagement means, their ability to attract new members and keep current members motivated increases.”

The 2016 Council on Legislation voted to give Rotary clubs more flexibility than they’ve ever had.

Blake noted that the changes in policy affect when, where and how clubs meet and the types of membership they offer.

The new body comprises of president Paul Jobling, vice president Alvin Parker, secretary Leslie Williams, treasurer Leonardo Ralph Patrick, immediate past president Carla (Peta Gay) Blake, president elect Kym Stubbs, director of club service Kyle Knowles, director of projects Dadre Seymour and director of public relations Roma Stubbs, director of youth Anansa Jervis and sergeant-at-arms Andrew Thomas.

The theme for this Rotary year is: “Serve humanity and be the change we want to see in the world.”

No development since 2010, are you surprised?

– PART ONE Dear Editor, Please allow me space in your newspaper to share my thoughts with the community of the Turks and Caicos Islands, whose people are from a pedigree of God-fearing, humble, loving, dignified, gifted and hospitable ancestry.

I pray that they continue to cling to their traditional way of life, elevate themselves to the highest level of their expectations and overcome trials and tribulations.

Until 2010, our economy was booming. For the first time in the history of the Islands’ development, we had witnessed the emergence of a middle-class comprised of indigenous people who were formerly limited to being civil servants or labourers for expatriate businesses.

During the ‘boom’ wealth trickled to the lowest within society because of our Islands’ family ties.

Even bullfrogs were dressed in soldier clothes and driving Escalades - boy what an exciting time it was and a sight to see.

Condominiums, hotels, high end villas, homes and businesses, airports, hospitals, roads and other forms of infrastructure were being built.

Donkeys, goats, cows and pigs were on scholarships and acquiring degrees from the best institutions in

the UK, USA, Canada, the Caribbean and elsewhere in the world.

In addition to the private sector initiatives and vibrancy, the Government adapted by facilitating and changing to meet the growing demands placed upon it.

Civil servants were motivated, caring, rational and responsive, they were Turks and Caicos Islanders.

Post allegations of corruption, interim administration and propaganda networks, our economy is now in the reverse, with a serious turn of events which threatens the very existence of the indigenous people.

It’s unfortunate for our newly elected Madam Premier that her also newly elected Government is faced with the following appointments, changes and circumstances: No control or influence over appointments to the civil service, which is supposed to be the implementation arm of her Government’s policies.

A buffer between the elected Government and the Civil Service; and direct tight fist control of the Civil Service by HE The Governor (the Civil Service falls directly under the Deputy Governor).

Removal of the Commissioner of Lands, Land Registry, Land Valuation, Lands and Surveys, and the Crown Land Unit from direct administration or control of the elected Government.

Placement of the Commissioner of Lands, Land Registry, Land Valuation, Lands and Surveys, and the Crown Land Unit under the control of the appointed and contracted Attorney General.

Appointment of only foreigners to head the Departments of Land Registry, Land Valuation, Lands and Surveys, the Crown Land Unit, Office of the Commissioner of Lands and the Department of Environment.

A Crown Land Policy, which is disadvantageous to indigenous Turks and Caicos Islanders and prevents access to and ownership of Crown land which previously existed for generations.

Emergence of foreign owned, controlled and agenda driven environmental/interest groups in the Islands, which are actively opposing any major economic development that would create jobs and opportunities for indigenous Turks and Caicos Islanders.

Direct channels of reporting for these agenda driven interest groups to the highest levels of Government, including those across the Atlantic Ocean.

Collusion of agenda driven interest groups and the highest levels of Government, especially the Department of Environment; and finally; Egregious, vindictive and opportunistic individuals giving

advice and instructions within the upper echelons of Government, with detrimental consequences to indigenous Turks Islanders.

I am wondering how, when and where did it become ‘them’ versus ‘us’ (indigenous people and their elected representatives)?

From a quick glance, you would conclude that it’s black versus white, locals versus foreigners, the environmentally conscious versus the ignoramus, but no, it is a small selected group of foreigners, who are determined to undermine the development of the Turks and Caicos Islands and preserve the status quo.

There are many foreigners that are genuinely working tirelessly for the development and betterment of our country.

They also want to see the uplifting and empowerment of the indigenous people - their own economic future here depends on it.

On the other hand, there are those who are resentful and bitter, acting as though there was a ‘big bang’ when they arrived and all of a sudden we the people were enlightened through their presence.

They cannot grasp the reality that people whom were formerly fishermen, salt rakers, their yard and house cleaners, construction labourers and so on, are now competing with them as building contractors, attorneys, real estate

agents, doctors and other types of professionals.

Isn’t it supposed to be about the indigenous people? Isn’t sustainable development about the indigenous people, their future, their children’s future and not compromising the lives of their future generations?

Isn’t democracy about them electing their representatives to institute systems and policies of Government to bring about their best goals and fulfil their aspirations?

Or is it that foreigners/expatriates, those who are completely alien to our woes, sorrows, desires and ambitions, know what’s best for us?

These folks have perfected the art of creating causes that will give themselves jobs; sources of donations, monies and sponsorships; occupy their time; and keep themselves in the Islands – all in the name of the environment and saving the Turks and Caicos Islands.

You all have seen the various ‘societies and funds’ that have been created in aid of the aforementioned: save the potcakes, donkeys, reefs and so on.

Soon there will be the ‘Save the Roaches Fund,’ but NEVER will you see a ‘Save the livelihood of the Turks and Caicos Islanders’ Fund’.

COMMENTARY

Change-up or pickup IN DECEMBER 2016 the PDM party was elected, promising change.

With the PDM in power much is going on and indeed it is fair to call it change. Change from the direction the PNP went way back in August 2003.

In our opinion change is also the PDMs attempt to get back to picking up where they left off in August 2003.

In 2003 we did not have a crime wave or weapons in the hands of criminals. We did not have massive illegal immigration. Debt was not a problem.

Our clinics were not fancy but were effective. Overseas referrals for serious health issues were sent to the USA. Myrtle Rigby was a clinic not a court house. Our resort

investors knew what was expected.

Was the government of that era perfect? Of course not. However, the country was moving steadily forward.

The causeway grant was in the hands of the PDM who planned to add money to the grant and build a proper bridge in 2004, not the vulnerable dirt road built in 2007.

Built for half the granted funds.

Interesting is that causeway repairs

have exceeded the grant and we are left with the same vulnerable bridge we had when 2008 hurricane Hanna came to call.

We had a nice modern airport with proper expansion planned and the Leeward Highway construction was well underway.

The country’s income was growing as PDM approved resorts came on line. This put money in the hands of

the new PNP government in 2003.

Not enough money for Chief Minister Misick! He took out three multi-million dollar loans and charged millions more.

The PNP gave Carnival Cruise our port and el-cheapo passenger landing fees for 10 years. This cost the TCI millions over 10 long years.

The PNP received a $6 million Carnival ‘thank you’ payment. $6 million bought Mike five Cadillacs and put ministers in their own Caddies, Lincolns and Road Runners. Now all gone.

There was the mansion, the servants, the pool. The attempt to expel commercial barges from Heaving Down Rock, the jet plane and Hollywood wife.

The PNP attempted to move the North Caicos farm top soil to now dead Dellis Cay. Remember?

We are still living and dying with the PNP health plan.

These are but a few of the highlights.

Unaddressed is that people who paid eight percent of their wages into NIB receive one quarter of the pension dollars they need to survive in the now elevated cost of living.

During 2012-2016 the now opposition leader was paid $500,000 as “retroactive pension”.

Now PDM has the cheque book and TCI money is being spent on the TCI. It will take time to straighten out all the rest.

Premier Sharlene is thanking and asking God for his guidance.

That, my friends, is exactly where Chief Derek left off in 2003.

“For those who are looking to participate in Grand Turk I would definitely tell anybody who is interested to jump on it, because Grand Turk is usually not exposed to as many of the opportunities as those in Provo are,” she urged.

BY DELANA ISLES AT 19 years of age Ryesha Higgs has already made strides most children her age and older are only still dreaming of – becoming an accomplished dancer, teaching young prospective ballerinas the art of movement, pursuing her medical career and being an all-round amazingly well adapted young lady.

In the face of all her accomplishments, not only is Ryesha unfazed by her hectic schedule, she is very down-to-earth, extremely perky, with such a positive attitude it practically exudes from her pores.

One of her signal achievements – which is already laying a firm foundation for one her future goals – is teaching young kids of the Turks and Caicos Islands aged five to seven the basics of dancing during the summer months she is not running helter-skelter chasing a crazy personal schedule.

This year marks two years since she is hosting her Summer Dance Intensive at the Star Gazer Studios from July 9 to 16 between the hours of 9.30am and 4.30pm.

There, she spends 40 hours per week inspiring young girls to become like her, as she pumps her considerable talent and stamina into ensuring that her students try their best to learn while also enjoying the experience.

They are taught dance techniques, ballet, hip hop, and musical theatre, with it all culminating in an open concert where they showcase their acquired expertise before an audience of parents and guardians.

She told Weekly News recently that this year she intends to take the programme to Grand Turk, from July 17 to 23.

“I always try to make it a community service initiative, so the cost is merely just associated with covering costs and making sure that all the students are provided with things like t-shirts and this year we are also providing all students with bags.”

With this being the first year the Dance Intensive will be hosted in Grand Turk at the HJ Robinson High School, Ryesha is inviting parents to sign their children up for a fun summer activity where they are also given a chance to nurture or even

develop a love of dancing.

She is also open to accepting persons older than 17 years, but that she said, will be done after careful screening.

“Last year we had really great support from the community, both in attendance as well as the show.

“I would definitely say that all the people that participated as well as their parents saw the benefit of being a part of something like this – having your child dance from beginning of the day to the afternoon, in various techniques, getting training and exposure to different things and also

having me give some of my insights about what I have done in New York to them.

“So, I would encourage anyone who is able, to definitely take part because it is something that is such a token in the Turks and Caicos Islands to have training like this offered to

RYESHA HIGGS’ JOURNEY TO INSPIRATION As she explained, her dancing days started at the age of five, it then progressed to professional dancing a mere four years later.

“I would take summer trips through the Turks and Caicos Friends of the Arts to the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet every summer, I did summer intensives there, training in ballet points and other things.

“I did that every year for about three years, then I branched out and looked at other options for myself.”

This led to a full scholarship for a dance intensive at the Vail Valley and Saratoga Springs Summer Dance in Colorado and New York State.

“After that moving up through high school, I was involved in a lot of performing arts, I did piano classes, I did vocal training, but my focus was mainly on dance. Especially as I got up to high school I started to lean towards one thing.

“It was more so a passion I had,” she reflected.

After graduating high school, Ryesha made the bold move at the age of 16 to relocate to New York City to pursue further dancing opportunities.

“I lived by myself at the age of 16. I got into Alvin Ainley American Dance theatre professional division programme, and there I did the independent studies programme.

“It’s a part of the professional division and it’s a programme which allows you to focus on either one or two modern techniques. I sought to do blend of both.”

In addition to that, she was also a part of several choreographic works put on by various choreographers throughout America. She also participated in musical theatre with a Broadway coach.

Not satisfied that her schedule was as packed as it could be, and ready to take a step towards another major goal of hers, Ryesha set her

sights on college.

“I have always been a good student throughout high school and I always had a vision of what I wanted to do in terms of academics.

“I graduated high school with an international distinction from my IGCSE and I definitely wanted to blend dance with my academics, so I enrolled in University as a Biology major at Long Island University in Brooklyn.

“I also started dancing there, with my focus mainly on ballet and preprofessional programme. I was also doing choreography training.

“Of course, that was a tough schedule,” she laughing recalled, “trying to balance dance and everything, but I lived very close to my school.

“I lived in Brooklyn and I danced in Harlem so I would commute an hour every night there and back to get everything done, but it worked out.”

NEXT BIG MOVE Come this September, Ryesha will be taking her boundless energy, love of dance and academic chops to London.

“I’m moving from New York to London. I am going to be dancing as well in London and I’m also looking to get into teaching dance at different community centres and schools for underprivileged youth while there.”

Apart from her first love, Ryesha will be taking King’s College by storm.

“When I got into Kings College London, which is one of the top eight schools in the UK and Europe, I am going to be studying bio-medical sciences, so it kind of goes hand in hand with my previous major which is biology.”

Of course, one wonders, where she finds the time and energy, so we had to ask, and as she laughingly replied – balance is key.

“I am good with planning, and I don’t really plan things to a T, I give myself breathing room, but I make sure that I am organised and stuff doesn’t build up on me and I don’t have enough time to get things done.

Because if children can showcase so much talent without being trained and without being told to do this, then the measure of their success if they do receive the training and the opportunity are just limitless “I would say that my upbringing has given me the drive to do whatever my passion is and to not allow the different things that affect me and the things that I have to balance, get in the way of that.

“I just take it one day at a time, balance school, do what I have to do for school and do what I have to do for dance; it is not always easy.

“This year was especially tiring because not only was I dancing, I started dancing at a school closer to where I live so I won’t have a long commute, I was also dancing at my school, but in addition to that I was doing training with an international relations organisation that is basically like a collegiate United Nations, preparing for an end of year conference with so many different countries and people from different schools, talking on different topics.

“And I was also volunteering at New York Methodist Hospital, I was volunteering at the cardiac care unit for about six months. So, this year was incredibly tough, but I got through it.”

WHEW! She continued: “Each time I get through something it just shows me that I can push myself a little bit more. It all sorts itself out, I don’t know how, but it all works.”

As for her inspiration, Ryesha credits her parents, country and the future generations as key figures.

“My inspiration is my parents, my country, seeing the potential that young people have to be great.

“Any time I’m out and there is some kind of performance happening that involves young people that aren’t necessarily exposed to dance on the same level as I was, and I see the calibre that they can perform at, it always inspires me to offer something

that gives them an opportunity.

“Because if children can showcase so much talent without being trained and without being told to do this, then the measure of their success if they do receive the training and the opportunity are just limitless.

“It really inspires somebody like me - who has had the privilege to go abroad and study - to invest the time in those that aren’t able to have the same opportunities, just to ensure that they can still achieve the same goals if they have them for themselves.”

ULTIMATE GOAL(S) IN LIFE - DANCER OR PROFESSIONAL WOMAN? BOTH? At just 19 years old Ryesha is already the epitome of ‘today’s woman’ – an unwillingness to put limits on herself, a refusal to be boxed in, and an air of adventure for all the possibilities that are open to her and those she intends to create for herself.

“I’ve always been very flexible with my ultimate goal, I’m definitely looking at working within the medical field in terms of profession, but I have done a lot auditions for dance and I’ve made it pretty far in a lot of auditions,” she said.

From auditioning for the NBA basketball team to dance in the Brooklynettes last year, where she made it to the final 15, to a memorable audition for a part in Lion King this past February, where she made the final 10.

“I make it close, and of course I get cut which is unfortunate, but I make it close out of like 200 dancers which is good. So, I audition around in the hopes that something will come up.

“And now, being in London, I

will be auditioning for more western stuff, which is like the Broadway of London, and also with dance companies.

“So, I do have aims of doing professional dance, I was in a small company last year called Genesis Contemporary Ballet, and I danced with them for like three months.”

However, as she explained her aim has always been to fit dance in alongside her academics to get as far as she possibly can with the hopes of not having to start from scratch if she does get a job offer in dancing.

“There are definitely job offers that work alongside school, so that is definitely my goal.”

After she has completed her studies at King’s College, Ryesha has even bigger plans.

“My ultimate thing would definitely be to open up a school that not only focuses on dance and technique but also offers community outreach classes, not just for dancers that trying to be professional, but for elderly people, people with disabilities, and also offering dance fitness classes.

“Just something that allows either students that look at dance as recreational or those that look at dance as their profession to have options in one place.”

She added: “That is definitely something that I want to do – to give people somewhere to go to express themselves, showcase their talents, act, dance, do music, all kinds of stuff.”

PERILS OF DELICIOUS ISLAND FOOD ON A DANCER’S BODY There is no dispute as to the deliciousness of conch fritters, peas and rice, macaroni and cheese, bbq ribs, Sweet T’s famous fried chicken,

boiled fish and grits and the list goes on and on. No dispute.

But a diet of that nature can play havoc on the body of dancer, and as Ryesha happily and firmly stated: “I love food”.

So, it definitely takes work and responsible eating habits to stay as svelte and lithe as she does.

As part of her Summer Dance Intensive programmes, Ryesha is offering some of this knowledge to her students, parents and other interested persons.

“For my intensive this year I am doing seminars where I am going to be speaking on different issues that affect people in the dancing world, for students, parents and teachers to come in and hear a little bit about it.”

One of the topic is nutrition and how to keep your figure on an island diet.

“I would definitely say that the way I maintain it is I am very active in the first place, so just being active in itself, even though you have to watch what you eat, you do have to balance what you eat, but being active of course assists in maintaining the figure you want to maintain.

“Then also the types of dance I do, I focus mainly on ballet, which really weans me out, it stretches my muscles, then I went to hordes and it built up my strength.

“So, it also depends on the kind of dance that you do, it will shape and mold your body in specific ways.”

Then there is also being a responsible eater.

“Of course, I have times, especially being a college student where I want to snack when my schedule is crazy so I just want to eat when I can, but I definitely owe it to dance for maintaining my size because if not I probably would have gained the freshman 15 (pounds).”

However, she stated that remaining active, dancing four times a week and rigorous class activities, keeps her in shape.

“Even if you want to enjoy your food – and I definitely believe in enjoying food – you still need to be reasonable and sensible with your choices and look at what’s best for you,” Ryesha encouraged.

More than 100 students will partake in an intern programme at Beaches TCI

Beaches recruits more than 100 summer interns ONE hundred plus enthusiastic students have been selected to join the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resorts Villages and Spa summer intern programme.

It is part of the company’s work study programme aimed at providing students with work experience in the hospitality industry.

The new interns were selected following a rigorous recruitment exercise and have since been placed in public relations, cost control, environmental health services and concierge among other departments.

The initiative is part of the company’s long standing commitment to assisting in the growth and development of the youth of the Turks and Caicos Islands providing practical experience to those who wish to venture into hospitality and related fields.

Interns range from high school graduates to college students and include first time interns and returnees.

Deleria Simms, assistant human resources manager for Beaches TCI said the programme has been very successful over the years.

“We recruited a total of 106 interns. Our goal is to introduce the

students to the hospitality industry with the hope of developing a labour pool from which we can pull on in the future and we focus on developing skills as well as actual learning as opposed to just providing them with a summer job.

“Even our application process is designed to assess their interview writing skills and to develop their interviewing skills,” she said.

Simms said the interns were informed on best practices, hospitality standards and conduct during their training.

Guerta Toussaint who is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain Management at Broward College in Florida said she is excited to be returning home to gain experience in her field of study.

She said: “I am looking to gain experience in the field. I did want to spend the summer doing something constructive that would give me field experience.

“I’m excited to be able to foster experience in supply chain management. I’m excited to learn more about my field by actually doing it.”

computer studies student at Turks and Caicos Islands Community College, was also elated about the programme, stating; “I don’t really think of it as a job, I look at it as a learning experience because you learn a lot by interacting with the guest and the employees.”

The internship programme is facilitated in part by the human resources department and the training department at the resort.

Successful applicants have the option of returning during holidays to intern with the company and are given special consideration for full time employment in the future.

Training manager Monique Graham said: “Internship is always good because what it does is it helps team members understand what the working world is like so they are better able to transition from high school into the real job and it also helps them to have some savings to help their parents for back to school.

“For persons who have a greater career expectation, it gives them a true exposure of what the hospitality industry is like so they know if this is what they want to do for the future or this is not what they want to do.”

School hosts professional development workshop for teachers

The workshop was held last week on the school’s grounds in Long Bay and was facilitated by Mr Martin.

As educational programmes turn digital, teachers are finding that blending technology into the learning experience will enhance their skills in the classroom.

Founder of Mills Institute, Carlton Mills said that this workshop is about integrating technology into education to support teaching and learning.

He said: “It is a school initiative and it is going to be an ongoing exercise at Mills Institute.

“As you know, we are in the age of technology and we want to ensure that our teachers are up to date with new technological methods

“We looked at PowerPoint, where we looked at moving beyond creating slide presentations.

“We as teachers walk the students through it, but now we can actually create a more interactive programme through PowerPoint.

“We also looked at Microsoft Excel which basically walks us through tabulating, scores and different types of numerical dates that teachers will use,” she said.

June 2017. Once again, crime is in the news. Not just our news. And that is - bad news.

As we come to terms with the most recent incident in Providenciales, which left an American tourist shot and medevacked to the US, we must, once again, take a good look at the crime situation in the TCI. And yes, this debate must be conducted in a level headed, non-hysterical manner. But it must be held and concrete measures must be the result.

I have no doubt that those who deal with crime and law enforcement professionally are trying their best and assiduous members of the law enforcement community ought to be commended for their efforts.

That said, it appears all too often like we are experiencing a communal ‘déjà vu’ every time a particularly distressing crime incident hits the news.

The crime is committed, everyone expresses their outrage, various bodies (Chamber of Commerce, Hotel and Tourism Association, etc) express their views.

The government of the day, the police and the Governor make statements…and then (at least that’s all too often the perception) – it’s back to normal.

That is of course after everyone’s had the obligatory reassurance that we are a very safe destination and country to reside in. Not good enough.

Let us hope and pray that one shot tourist is the one and only deleterious, crime related tourism headline for 2017.

A second, third or fourth incident - God forbid a fatality - could prove truly catastrophic.

Again, I really do not wish to sound alarmist, but it is because we really still have a chance to nip this problem in the bud (as alluded to earlier), we must do so vigorously and decisively!

With the world reacting to bad news in record real time, via Facebook, Twitter, TripAdvisor, Instagram, etc, all of us in the TCI have to be very concerned about what can happen to a destination when crime gets out of hand.

The following is now sadly an all too common impression about the crime situation in Nassau: “Crime has gotten worse in Nassau. We receive more complaints about crime in Nassau than all of the other ports in the Caribbean combined.

“Armed robberies, sexual assault of teenagers and young women, and the murder of a tourist makes this port a dangerous place to take your family.

“The second you step off the cruise ship you're likely to be offered drugs.” (Cruise Law News) Finally: I am the last person who should be giving the police or any other law enforcement personnel, advice as to how to do their job. And I won’t.

What will say though is: Going forward, get a grip on the narrative!

Yes, report on the incidents when they happen but also ‘sell’ your/our success story, as/when the crimes are dealt with effectively.

And no, this doesn’t mean giving the same old, routine press conferences, with the ‘feel good’ statistics and assurances of how safe and wonderful everything is.

We’ve heard it all too many times before. Don’t let the story fizzle out, publish intelligible updates, show your effectiveness. It will bear fruit guaranteed.

In the words of the Roman statesman Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BC - AD 65): “He who does not prevent a crime when he can, encourages it.”

Cabinet to redirect $250k from Tourist Board to new marketing strategy THE GOVERNMENT is looking to redirect some $250,000 from within the budget of the Tourist Board towards a new marketing strategy activity.

This was revealed in a post Cabinet statement, although no indication was given as what the new marketing activity is intended to be.

They are thereby seeking the approval of the Governor, who was advised of the move, to have the money relocated.

Cabinet further approved the commencement of negotiations with IBC Airlines about air services between South Florida, Grand Turk and South Caicos for further consideration by Cabinet.

Meanwhile, at that same meeting (June 30), Governor John Freeman was further advised to approve the multi-agency protocol for the prevention, reporting and management of child abuse and neglect and to endorse the policy on the supervision of practitioners working on child safeguarding in the department of social development.

Members were also informed of the annual recruitment strategy for financial year (FY) 2017/18 and an up-date on recruitment for the first quarter of the financial year.

It was noted that 74 positions

remained vacant at the end of FY 2016/17 and that an additional 80 posts were created for FY 2017/18.

Of the 154 vacancies, 60 posts have been filled in the first quarter of FY 2017/18; These statistics were presented via an information paper by Deputy Governor.

Cabinet members were also updated on the draft legislative agenda for the period July 2017 March 2018.

Further advice was given to the Governor to approve the commissioning of a review of all the TCI statutory bodies to commence in mid-July 2017 and to be completed within 90 days.

He was also advised to approve funding for the purchase of two generators and two mobile satellite internet systems to enable the Ministry of Finance to continue to operate in critical areas of business in the event of a disaster.

The members also noted information amendments to the 2002 TCI tourist board staff policy and procedures manual, now called the 2016 staff policy and procedures handbook, to be finalised by the tourist board after further discussion with the attorney-general’s chambers.

They are also seeking the

Governor’s approval for emergency funding for the replacement of equipment stolen from the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) several weeks ago.

Governor Freeman was also brought up to date and asked to approve amendments to the Adoption Ordinance 2015 as set out in the draft Adoption (Amendment) Bill 2017 for forwarding to the House of Assembly.

Cabinet further received and endorsed an information paper by the Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Library Services on plans to introduce the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) programme for students in forms one to three of secondary schools in TCI. Cabinet also advised the Governor to approve the establishment of a national mental health and criminal justice steering committee to address the need to improve the provision

of mental health services in TCI including to those in the criminal justice system.

Member examined and noted an information paper by the Minister of Health on the need for additional resource to boost efforts to tackle the increasing threat from mosquitoes and the transmission of other vectorborne diseases. This is expected to be discussed further by Ministers.

An update on the national skills audit was presented by the Deputy Premier, while the Deputy Governor provided members with an update on the current status of project contracts as at the end of June 2017.

The Director of the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources also updated members on the proposed changes affecting parts of TCI’s National Parks and other protected areas.

Meanwhile, as for appointments sought, the Governor was advised to appoint Ashwood Hall as a member of the District Board for Middle Caicos with effect from July 1, 2017 until March 31, 2018; and to revoke the appointment of Leandra Garland as Secretary of the Zone 1 Work Permit Board and to appoint Shirlene Smith as her replacement with effect from July 1, 2017 in accordance with the Immigration Ordnance.

Power company hosts minister visit FORTISTCI hosted Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Planning Goldray Ewing during an official visit to the company recently.

This marks the minister’s first visit in his official capacity since his appointment to the post earlier this year.

Ewing, accompanied by the Energy and Utilities Commissioner Malike Cummings, met with members of the FortisTCI

management team.

The meeting included a presentation led by senior vice president of corporate services Ruth Forbes, senior vice president of operations Devon Cox and senior director of electrical planning, engineering and energy delivery Don Forsyth.

The presentation and discussion offered FortisTCI representatives the opportunity to update Ewing on industry matters, as well as projects

and ongoing initiatives by FortisTCI. The minister was also able to share with the team his focus and areas for development.

Topics discussed included a company overview, energy delivery and strategic planning, and major infrastructure projects.

Ewing and Cummings toured the Providenciales generation site and main control room.

In the afternoon, the group then travelled to Grand Turk to tour the

generation site in South Base.

While in Grand Turk, Ewing was briefed on recent investments made to improve the electricity infrastructure in the nation’s capital.

These include the recent purchase and installation of three new engines and the new multipurpose building that will be completed later this year to house technical staff and various support activities.

Forbes said: “We are pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with honourable Ewing and discuss matters important to the successful delivery of electricity to our customers.”

FortisTCI has held similar meetings and tours earlier this year for various Government representatives, including Governor John Freeman, and the Deputy Premier and Minister of Border Control and Labour Sean Astwood.

Sailrock hires first set of summer interns SAILROCK Resort has recently welcomed four students from Marjorie Basden High School in South Caicos to participate in a three-week summer internship.

Rashaunda Cooke, Gregory Williams, Lashanna Goldman, and Alteema Johnson were each selected to take part in the 2017 Sailrock Summer Internship Programme.

The summer interns will have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and get handson experience in their desired fields, while earning salaries.

Operations and human resources manager, Keno Forbes, said: “We are excited to welcome these four interns to the Sailrock family for our first ever Sailrock Summer Internship Programme.

“The selection process was very tough, and we expect that it will only get tougher as Sailrock expands and more students apply.

“That being said, we have hired

an impressive group of interns and look forward to assisting their career growth over the next three weeks.”

TCI basketball team to compete in Puerto Rico

BY DAISY HANDFIELD FOURTEEN basketball players from the Turks and Caicos Islands will travel to Puerto Rico to compete in an international basketball tournament from July 18 to the 22.

This initiative was made possible through a collaborative effort between the TCI Rising Stars Basketball Club and InterHealth Canada, a key sponsor of the team.

A media briefing was held on Wednesday, July 5, at the Downtown Ballpark in Providenciales to formally introduce the players.

Nikira John, public relations and marketing manager for InterHealth Canada TCI, said that the donation reflects the company’s commitment towards health promotion and encouraging youths, especially young men, to stay physically active and productively engaged.

Secretary of the TCI Basketball Federation, Trevor Cooke, offered best wishes to the team as they embarked on their final two weeks of practice.

President and vice-president of the Rising Stars Basketball Club, Marvin and Jarrett Forbes, intend to use the opportunity to promote their older athletes on an international scale with hopes of receiving a college scholarship.

Club has managed to seize unique overseas opportunities for its basketball stars in the past.

Dwaine Simmons, a young athlete from Grand Turk, most recently secured a college basketball

scholarship with Dakota College in the United States.

The club was established in the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2012 with a mission to empower today’s youth and teach young

basketball players to have respect for themselves, their peers, and their community by instilling a code of ethics built on honesty, responsibility and team work.

Currently there are 90 athletes

registered in Providenciales and 82 athletes registered in Grand Turk, ages eight to 18.

The goal is to eventually expand to the islands of South Caicos, Middle Caicos and North Caicos.

Self-trust and what that means in terms of our actions WHEN it comes to trust, often this topic can be quite fragile.

Whether you are cultivating a friendship, relationship or a leader of your home, work or country, your ability to be a trustworthy person can be important.

Moreover, what many people do not realise is that our actions regarding core beliefs and values reflect our own level of trust, specifically self-trust.

Self-trust, in its purest form is our ability to rely on ourselves where it counts whether that be in political preferences, the friendships we form or the careers we choose in life.

While some of us may go to jobs out of necessity rather than passion, our choices in other areas of life as mentioned above stem from our level of self-trust.

Like anything else worthwhile in life, self-trust needs to be cultivated, nurtured and grown.

Here are three tips on how to build self-trust: SELF-AWARENESS LEADS TO INTEGRITY We all tend to lie to ourselves about our actions and abilities at times.

Whether we think we are the best cooks, the coolest parent at the

school, the most caring person or the most negative person on the planet.

Though this is a commonality we all share, it is also something that we work on when it comes to building self-trust.

Studies have countlessly shown that when we trust ourselves with what we believe in and stand for, our personal and behavioural integrity become aligned.

This means that our beliefs about ourselves and how we carry ourselves mirror one another often.

Notice I use the word “often” and not “always”.

This is because we are prone to have moments where personal and behavioural integrity do not align, but this should not discourage us from being our best selves.

According to Karen Kleiman, LCSW, when we work on the best version of ourselves, we widen the space between who we are and who we hope to be.

This builds our self-awareness and integrity.

ACCOUNTABILITY TO YOURSELF As mentioned before, self-awareness is important when it comes to building self-trust.

LET’S TALK HEALTH 

Accountability of the self is where we can hold firmly to our beliefs, standards, and actions, whatever they may be irrespective of if others believe in you or not.

This slowly and surely leads to self-trust.

Becoming vigilant about our own level of accountability in turn allows us to have a firm grip on what we believe and want for ourselves.

Though nothing great that is achieved is done by one person alone, it is more important that we love and trust ourselves first then it is to gain constant validation from others.

ENCOURAGE YOURSELF TOWARDS PERSONAL DISCOVERY This may be one of the most controversial points made when it comes to cultivating self-trust.

Don’t let a fall bring you down A SENIOR who’s suffered an injury from a fall knows the dramatic impact it can have not just physically, but psychologically.

Falls can swiftly take away the sense of independence and confidence that allows a senior to fully enjoy their life.

FINAL THOUGHTS In this world that is constantly redefining what is considered right, wrong and politically correct, it takes strength to stand firm in what you believe in.

Yes, this belief can evolve but this is to be based on a set change; one that comes from within.

The truth is we all must work on self-trust, and no one is immune to this.

Nurture and cultivate the gifts and talents you have at this very moment.

Always remember that forward is forward regardless of the pace.

At least 75,000 could die if earthquake Bahamas: Opposition says FNM rhetoric has hits vulnerable Haiti Great North A UNITED States-based global earthquake and structural engineering firm has found that there would be a significant risk of death and destruction if the Great North section of Haiti experienced an earthquake.

The study by the Miyamoto International firm found that in the event of a major earthquake in the vulnerable Great North, probable damage in the four main cities would amount to at least 75,000 deaths, 350,000 people temporarily relocated and damage to more than 50 percent of buildings.

The results of the study by the California-based company were revealed last week as the third meeting of the technical group on the Urban Risk Prevention Plan (PPRU) for Cap-Haitien was held in Haiti as part of the project “Support to Resilience to Natural Disasters” implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the Government of Japan.

The experts pointed out that the region of the Great North is considered one of the country’s zones most exposed to seismic and tsunami risks.

MEMBERS of the Official Opposition have accused the Minnis administration of triggering Moody’s looming review of this country’s credit rating with damaging rhetoric, saying the actions and words of the current government prompted the threat of a new downgrade.

In a statement issued Tuesday, PLP Senator Fred Mitchell said the new administration engaged in “reckless” borrowing shortly after assuming office, stating: “You made the broth, so now stew in your own fat.”

In a separate statement, the PLP’s finance spokesperson and Exuma MP Chester Cooper said the Free National Movement’s description of the country’s finances since assuming office prompted Moody’s latest stance on the matter.

The reaction came after Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance K Peter Turnquest on Monday blamed the Christie administration’s efforts to “hide the true extent” of the country’s fiscal crisis on Moody’s announcement that it has placed the Bahamas’ Baa3 credit rating on review for a

downgrade.

The former Fox Hill MP said the assertion put forth by Mr Turnquest reflected the thoughts of a person who had not read the Moody’s report in full, noting the credit rating agency did not differentiate between the actions of either administration.

“All one has to do is read what Moody’s said. They talked about the government and The Bahamas,” Mr Mitchell noted.

“In our parliamentary debates, the leader of the opposition, our MPs and senators tried to warn the FNM, stop talking down this economy. We thought it reckless to borrow nearly a billion in their first week in office.

We said the only reason for the less than promised fiscal performance was Hurricane Matthew. Mr Mitchell added: “Mismanagement and corruption by the PLP figured nowhere in what Moody’s had to say.

Those were FNM propaganda lines.

Now look what you’ve done.

“And yet the only thing you can say, having called your own fish stink, is that it’s the PLP’s fault. As my mum used to say: ‘You all ain’t shame?’”

Jamaica PM orders audit of ministers’ cellphone expenses after multi-million-dollar phone bill PRIME Minister Andrew Holness has ordered an audit of the cellphone bills of all ministers and a cap on cell phone expenses, on the heels of a whopping J$8 million (US$62,612) bill racked up by Minister of Finance Audley Shaw.

He said the situation was unacceptable and had to be addressed immediately.

It was during a meeting of Cabinet Ministers that he called on Tuesday to discuss and review the issue of communication costs and high cellular phone bills being incurred for roaming and data charges, that the Prime Minister ordered an audit of all cell phone bills of Ministers and State Ministers.

Coming out of the meeting, it was also acknowledged that there was no standard, clear and consistent policy being applied across government regarding the treatment of communication expenses for Ministers and Ministers of State.

In the interim, the Prime Minister directed that cellular phone expenses be capped.

The Ministry of Finance has been tasked to advise the Prime Minister, within a week, on the appropriate amount for the cap to be paid by each ministry for the Minister’s cellular phone bills. Any amount exceeding the cap would be the responsibility of the respective Ministers unless otherwise approved by the Permanent Secretary.

Guyanese have been on edge this week following the escape of a group of prisoners led by a notorious killer on death row.

The prisoners made their escape last Sunday following a riot at the country’s main jail in Georgetown.

The unrest started with pockets of fire and ended with the 133-year-old facility almost completely gutted.

Several prison officers were also shot during the ordeal, while one of them have succumbed to his wounds.

A total of 10 prisoners escaped, but two have since been recaptured.

Logistically the incidence has been a nightmare for authorities in the

South American country, especially since they have had to deal with 1000+ prisoners. On Sunday night many of them were transported to a smaller prison, approximately 10 miles away from the city and near the country’s golf course in the village of Lusignan.

From Monday, a few dozen “small offense” inmates were granted bail, but many others were still forced into unsanitary living conditions in shelters outside of the buildings.

On the same day a national security meeting was held and Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan sought to re-assure the general public that the government was in control.

Report: Electoral boundaries need review for ‘greater equality’ in Cayman Islands A TEAM of Commonwealth elections observers has recommended that the Cayman Islands review its electoral boundaries to achieve “greater equality” in voting in the next general election.

“Equal suffrage has not been achieved under the current electoral district boundaries,” states the report, published Tuesday by the six-member observer team.

The observers, from a number of Commonwealth countries in the Caribbean and in Europe, spent a week in Cayman around the time of the May 24 election.

“Constituency boundaries should be reviewed with the aim of achieving greater equality between the numbers of electors [voters] within the electoral districts,” the report states. “Deviations from the norm should ideally not be more than 10 to 15 percent.”

Ahead of the May 2017 election, Cayman switched to 19 singlemember districts, giving each legally registered Caymanian one vote.

Previously, Cayman used a multimember voting system, in which individuals had anywhere from one to six votes, depending on where they lived.

The Commonwealth observers took issue with the fact that voting populations in each of the singlemember districts vary widely, giving the example of Bodden Town East, with 1,513 registered voters and comparing it to East End (692 voters) and North Side (716 voters).

“Bodden Town East is the district in which voters are the most under represented,” the report noted.

Constituency boundaries should be reviewed with the aim of achieving greater equality between the numbers of electors [voters] within the electoral districts,” the report states.

The observers said the 2015 Electoral Boundary Commission redistricting effort did “ameliorate” the unfair voting system that existed before 2017, but “a few districts” were still departing from the norm.

On average, Grand Cayman voting districts had 1,186 voters, meaning East End district was about 42 percent smaller than the average district and North Side was about 40 percent smaller.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman’s two voting districts are also much smaller than the norm on

Grand Cayman, but Commonwealth observers said this situation is mandated by the territory’s constitution.

Although Cayman had debated the change to its electoral boundaries for more than five years before the May 2017 election, the legislation enabling the change to the one man, one vote system was not approved until November 2016.

Commonwealth observers opined this was a fairly short time in which to educate the public and make sure voters knew where to go on Election

Day. “A change in the law so close to the election is not considered to be good practice internationally,” the observers wrote.

Despite the short time given, the Cayman Islands Elections Office was praised for its voter education efforts and organization in preparation for the voting change.

“The electoral process ran smoothly,” observers said.

The report also considered whether voting rights were being extended in the territory to everyone

who should have them.

Observers made no direct recommendations on the subject, but opined that the “reasonableness of the current provisions” regarding who can vote should be looked at in any upcoming review of the Cayman Islands Constitution Order, 2009.

“Regardless of the duration of residency, or the attainment of the status of permanent resident, all persons except those holding Caymanian status are ineligible to vote,” the Commonwealth report stated. “This has led to the fact that out of an estimated population of at least 60,000 people, only around 34,000 hold Caymanian status with around 24,000 of them eligible to register to vote.

“The mission received comments from long-term residents without status in the Cayman Islands about their sense of disenfranchisement,” the report continues.

“The [observers] mission notes that the issues raised by long term residents are of a constitutional nature.”

Even if a person is Caymanian, eligibility to vote can be elusive in the Cayman Islands, the Commonwealth report noted.

Qualification for voter registration now requires a person to reside in the islands for at least two of the four years before the last registration date for the general election.

“This period appears to be overly restrictive and may operate to exclude otherwise eligible Caymanians from exercising their right to vote,” the report stated.

The observers also highlighted some concerns about vote secrecy.

Caribbean shareholders want CLICO bailout from T&T EIGHT years after the CLICO collapse, shareholders in Barbados, St Vincent and Grenada are now calling on the T&T Government to bail them out of the debacle.

But Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said yesterday that the last thing his Government intended to do was pay out any CARICOM shareholder, since CLICO’s future looks quite unsettled. In that regard, the PM gave the assurance that legal steps may be an option to protect the interest of our citizens.

This was one of the discussions that came up at the CARICOM intersessional meeting in Grenada, which Rowley attended and spoke about yesterday at the Piarco International Airport when he returned home.

Rowley said while T&T has taken steps to financially bail out its citizens

who were affected by CLICO’s collapse, its shareholders in Barbados, St Vincent and Grenada are now calling on the Government to do the same for them. He said their arguments were based on the Chaguaramas Treaty that no CARICOM country should favour its own citizens.

“I think they were bolstered by some agreements that date back to the Manning era which was supported by the Persad-Bissessar’s era, where certain commitments were made to pay certain monies and in fact, those agreements were cemented by payment of US$50 million in the promise of $100 million.”

Rowley said, however, that the country was now being called upon to conclude those transactions.

“I did ask for a time to look at it a little closer in the context of the promises that were made, because

Trinidad and Tobago will not renege on a country’s commitment to our CARICOM colleague,” he said. The PM said the Government asked for the time so it could look at CLICO’s current situation.

“I want to take this opportunity to tell the national community that there are some serious developments taking place with respect to this CLICO matter and the last thing we can do now is to pay out money now to anybody about CLICO, while we are engaged in a very serious matter with the Government’s protection of the national interest with respect to the monies paid out to CLICO.” He said people who had and continue to maintain CLICO’s interest through their shareholders, have taken action with the expectation that they would succeed

in expelling the Government from the board of CLICO, even while T&T taxpayers have not recovered from the $20 billion that was paid out in the bailout plan.

“We are currently engaged in that matter. And against that background, at CARICOM I told the claimants that we are not prepared at this time to entertain any further discussions on that matter at the level of CARCIOM, but we will talk to the country at a bilateral level.”

Rowley said they expect to talk to the three regional countries about the CLICO liabilities. Under the last People’s Partnership administration, Rowley said a number of ministers beat their chests for settling the CLICO matter.

“The matters are far from settling.

The future looks quite unsettled.

But along the way the Government of T&T will take all reasonable and legal steps to protect the interest of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”

He said a favourable memorandum of understanding was signed in the 2009 bailout, which allowed billions of taxpayers’ dollars to be injected into the privately-owned company.

“One thing that was not on that bailout was interest for that monies that were being paid to this private company. There was no provision for interest to accrue. But that was part of the arrangement.”

Over and above that, Rowley said they are now having an issue from the company’s shareholders who are “resolutely resisting a renewal of the memorandum of understanding under which taxpayers’ money went into that company.”

May ‘shed a tear’ at election exit poll THERESA May has revealed she shed a “little tear” when she learned the result of the election exit poll suggesting she would lose her majority.

The prime minister said her husband Philip told her the news and it came as a “complete shock”.

“It took a few minutes for it to sink in,” she told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Emma Barnett, because “we didn’t see that result coming”.

“My husband gave me a hug,” she added, and she cried a “little tear”.

The prime minister said she did not watch the exit poll herself, as “I have a little bit of superstition about things like that”.

She knew her campaign had not been “perfect”, she added, but all the indications she had had were that she would increase her Commons majority.

Mrs May called 8 June’s general election to tighten her grip on power and strengthen her hand in Brexit talks by increasing the number of Conservative MPs in the Commons.

But although she started more than 20 points ahead of Labour in the opinion polls she lost most of that lead as well as 22 seats, wiping out the 17 seat majority she had inherited from predecessor David Cameron.

“Looking back on the campaign, I realise now and regret that we were not making more of that,” she said.

She insisted her government had the “humility” to “listen to the message we got from people at the election”.

Lula says that the trial is politically motivated and has strongly denied any wrongdoing.

Brazil’s ex-President Lula convicted of corruption FORMER Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been convicted of corruption charges and sentenced to nine and a half years in prison.

The judge ruled he could remain free pending an appeal.

Lula has rejected claims that he received an apartment as a bribe in a corruption scandal linked to state oil company Petrobras.

He says the trial is politically motivated and has strongly denied any wrongdoing.

The case is the first of five charges against him.

Lula served eight years as president until 2011 and has expressed interest in running again in next year’s elections for the leftwing Workers’ Party.

On Wednesday, a judge found

him guilty of accepting bribes from engineering firm OAS in the form of a beachfront apartment in return for his help in winning contracts with the state oil company.

In a statement, Lula’s lawyers insisted he was innocent and said they would appeal.

“For more than three years Lula has been subject to a politically motivated investigation. No credible evidence of guilt has been produced, and overwhelming proof of his innocence blatantly ignored,” they wrote.

The head of the Workers’ Party, Senator Gleisi Hoffmann, also hit out at the ruling, saying it was designed to stop Lula standing for office.

She said the party would protest against the decision.

China’s most prominent dissident dies NOBEL laureate Liu Xiaobo, who was China’s most prominent human rights and democracy advocate, has died aged 61, officials say.

The activist was being treated for terminal liver cancer in a hospital in north-eastern China.

He had been transferred from prison last month, where he was serving an 11-year term for “subversion”.

A university professor turned rights campaigner, Mr Liu was branded a criminal by the authorities.

He was repeatedly jailed throughout his life, and had also been subject to heavy restrictions when he was free, while his wife, Liu Xia, was placed under house arrest.

In the weeks leading up to his death, Mr Liu’s case became mired in international controversy.

Trump defends ‘innocent’ son Donald Jr over Russia meeting

Coal imports slumped by 75%, suggesting Beijing is gradually choking off North Korea’s biggest source of foreign currency.

China is trading more with North Korea but buying much less coal CHINA has slashed imports of coal from North Korea even as overall trade between the countries continues to rise.

A Chinese government official said Thursday that China-North Korea trade was worth $2.6 billion in the first half of 2017, up about 10% over the same period last year.

But coal imports slumped by 75%, suggesting Beijing is gradually choking off North Korea’s biggest source of foreign currency.

China’s overall imports from North Korea fell 13% compared to the first half of 2016, said Huang Songping, a spokesman for China’s customs department. They had risen by 18% in the quarter ended March.

The decline follows China’s decision in February to ban all imports of North Korean coal.

President Trump has repeatedly criticized China over its trade with North Korea, calling on it to exert more pressure on Kim Jong-un’s regime. He called out the “nearly 40%” increase in trade in the first three months of the year on Twitter last week.

“So much for China working with us - but we had to give it a try!” he added.

The overall rise in trade has been driven by China’s exports to North Korea, which were up by nearly 30% in the first half of the year.

China insists none of its current trade with Pyongyang is in violation of international sanctions. Huang told reporters on Thursday that the rise in trade was mainly due to an increase in textile exports.

“The sanctions imposed by the [United Nations] are not a comprehensive embargo,” he said.

“Trade related to the people’s livelihood in the North Korea, especially those that embody humanitarian principles, should not be affected by sanctions.”

The new data reflects China’s attempt to pull off a delicate balancing act between the U.S. and North Korea, where it wants to prevent the regime collapsing because it worries about what that would mean for regional stability.

But Beijing is also eager to avoid riling Trump.

DONALD Trump has defended his son over a meeting with a Russian lawyer during his presidential campaign, calling him “open, transparent and innocent”.

He tweeted hours after Donald Trump Jr spoke to Fox News about the meeting he was told would offer Kremlin-linked information about Hillary Clinton.

Critics accuse Mr Trump Jr of intent to collude with the Russians, and believe he may have broken federal laws.

Mr Trump Jr told Fox News the meeting was “such a nothing”.

However, he accepted he should have handled it differently.

Earlier on Tuesday Mr Trump Jr released the email exchange that brought about the meeting, after being informed the New York Times was about to publish it.

US officials are investigating alleged Russian meddling in the US election.

Since he was elected, President Trump has been dogged by allegations that Russia tried to sabotage Mrs Clinton’s campaign.

He has denied any knowledge of this and Russia has also repeatedly denied interfering.

Mr Trump Jr received an email from an intermediary, British music publicist Rob Goldstone, promising documents from Russia that would incriminate Mrs Clinton.

At that time, his father was the presumptive Republican nominee and heading towards an election fight against his Democratic rival.

The meeting was reportedly arranged by Russian businessman Aras Agalarov and his son Emin, a pop star who was managed for a time

by Mr Goldstone.

Mr Trump Jr, his brother-in-law Jared Kushner and then campaign chairman Paul Manafort met Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya at Trump Tower in New York in June 2016.

It became apparent, Mr Trump Jr later said, that Ms Veselnitskaya wanted to discuss a suspended programme for Americans to adopt Russian children.

Donald Trump Jr told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he did not tell his father about last year’s meeting: “It was such a nothing. There was nothing to tell.

“I mean, I wouldn’t have even remembered it until you started scouring through this stuff. It was literally just a wasted 20 minutes, which was a shame.”

In retrospect, he would have done things a little differently, Mr Trump Jr told Fox News, but he defended his actions.

“This is before the Russia mania, this is before they were building this up in the press. For me this was opposition research, they had something you know maybe concrete evidence to all the stories I’d been hearing about.”

But the meeting went nowhere, he said, and it was apparent Mrs Clinton was not the subject.

He could not vouch for the information he was sent, he said.

“Someone sent me an email. I can’t help what someone sends me.

I read it, I responded accordingly, and if there was something interesting there, I think that’s pretty common.”

Man who gunned down ex-wife, in-laws, kills himself in Florida THE Florida man who gunned down his ex-wife and two others later killed himself, hours after the he ambushed the family in Alabama.

Kenneth Dion Lever took his own life in a Pensacola parking lot Wednesday after a police officer spotted him.

He’d returned to Escambia County, Fla., and met with a minister after gunning down ex-wife Dana Lever; her sister, Bonnie Reeves Foshee; and her brother-in-law, Don Foshee at a mobile home park in northern Alabama, according to AL.com.

“It was obvious it was a wellthought-out plan,” Gardendale police Lt. Bryan Lynch told the news website. “He came for that reason.

We don’t know if he was targeting

all three, or if that’s just how it happened.”

Lever’s 11-year-old daughter, living with Dana Lever, witnessed the gruesome shooting, but was able to escape.

“She did see enough to know what happened and then she ran to a neighbour’s house,’’ Lynch told the news website. “So we knew very quickly who the suspect was.”

Lever, 52, ambushed the four at his ex-wife’s home in Gardendale early Wednesday.

Her sister and brother-in-law arrived to take Dana Lever and her daughter to Chicago, where her son was graduating from U.S. Navy boot camp.

They were packing up the Foshees’ van at about 8 a.m. when

Kenneth Lever killed his ex-wife, her sister and brother-in-law in Alabama, then fled to Florida where he shot himself.

Lever appeared from a nearby shed.

Sporting a camouflage t-shirt, blue jeans and a handgun Lever opened fire on the four.

Lever, who had a troubled past with the law, had parked his rented red Nissan near a community pool, walked to the home and carried out the shootings.

He fled it one of his victims’ cars, made his way back to the rented car and started the 265-mile drive back to Florida, police told the news website.

Multiple law enforcement agencies scoured the town, located 15 miles north of Birmingham, and temporarily placed it on lockdown.

Alabama authorities reached out to their counterparts in Pensacola, AL.com reported, and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office staked out his Florida home and other locations.

A deputy spotted Lever sometime later, the news website reported. He pulled into the parking lot for the

Navy Federal Credit Union’s call center, got out of the car and fatally shot himself.

“We were not surprised. based on witness statements, he had already made statements before any of this that he was thinking about killing himself,” Gardendale Police Chief Mike Walker told AL.com.

Police said they first had to break the news to the daughter that her mother was dead, then that her father had taken his own life.

“She has been so traumatised,” Lynch said. “I don’t know that she has filtered it all thoroughly. She’s going to need a lot of support.”

The Red Cross and Navy worked with Alabama officials to notify Dana Lever’s son in Chicago, police told AL.com.

TCI bartenders to shine during first annual Cocktail Week

BY DAISY HANDFIELD FIVE bartenders from different establishments in Providenciales will compete during the first annual Turks and Caicos Cocktail Week from July 27 to July 30.

The event is a partnership between the TCI Wine Cellar and Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA).

The main event will be held at The Landing Bar and Kitchen in Grace Bay on July 29 at 5.30pm to 10pm.

A press conference was held at Kalooki’s restaurant in Blue Hills on Wednesday (July 12) to share information regarding the event.

Bartenders from Kalooki’s, Pelican Bay, Solana restaurant, the Landing, Sand Bar, West Bay Club, Seven Stars and the Gansevoort will compete for the title of Bartender of the Year and a chance to compete in the Taste of the Caribbean competition in the United States in

2018.

The winner will also walk off with $1,000 cash prize.

Representative from the Wine Cellar, Jena Messam explained that the idea of the event is to celebrate cocktail and mixology in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

She said: “What we really want to do is promote our local bartenders to think bigger than just bartending and to try to get into the trade of mixology.

“Mixology as a craft is growing globally, especially in the Caribbean.

We want to also be known as not just a culinary island, but an island that is known for great mixology.

“You can go to any bar and you can see our local bartenders whip up a world class cocktail- that is our aim for Cocktail Week.

“We want to encourage bartenders to aim for the sky when they are bartending and we want them to have pride in it because it is an amazing

Cox added she hoped that this event changed the way people viewed bartending, especially those who considered it to be a boring job in the hotel industry.

“I would like the community to see this as an opportunity to look at our bartenders in a new light.

“They are gifted individuals; they have a sense of humour; they have expertise and they are innovative,” she said.

Kid Rock announces Senate run KID Rock is saddling up for a political run.

The Michigan native announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate Wednesday after months of speculation.

“I have had a ton of emails and texts asking me if this...is real,” he tweeted with a link to KidRockForSenate.com.

“The answer is an absolute YES.” The website provides no information, but the country singer is already selling campaign shirts, yard signs, hats and stickers through Warner Bros. Records.

THE family of late “True Blood” actor Nelsan Ellis says the actor was attempting to withdraw from alcohol leading up to his death on Saturday.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Ellis’s family -- via his manager Emily Gerson Saines -said they were prompted to share the details of the 39-year-old’s death in hopes of helping others struggling with addiction.

“Nelsan has suffered with drug and alcohol abuse for years. After many stints in rehab, Nelsan attempted to withdraw from alcohol on his own,” the statement said. “According to his father, during his withdrawal from alcohol he had a blood infection, his kidneys shut down, his liver was swollen, his blood pressure plummeted, and his dear sweet heart raced out of control.”

Eastwood casts actual heroes in train attack film CLINT Eastwood’s new film about three Americans who stopped a terror attack on a train to Paris will star the real-life heroes of that 2015 incident.

Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos and Spencer Stone will play themselves in The 15:17 to Paris, based on the book they co-wrote with Jeffrey E Stern.

Actors will play younger versions of the trio in the film, which is

thought to focus on the three men’s friendship.

The men were awarded Legion d’honneur medals for their actions.

They also received a hero award from Eastwood himself at an awards ceremony last year.

Sadler, Skarlatos and Stone were among a number of passengers who overpowered a heavily armed man who had opened fire on the train.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensure the effective supervision of the operations at the BOTH Locations, which includes customer service standards, rate management, fleet availability and cleanliness, and operational standards.

• Ensures that all staff is trained with the adequate knowledge of the rental process.

• Ensure proper authorization and documentation is in place for all vehicles rented to customers.

• Contributes to the preparation of the Budget and controls all expenses related to the Location.

• Submit weekly usage & billings reports to Department Heads.

• Participated in the Strategic Planning process to align the Department’s goals with overall organizational goals.

• Ensure quality customer service and respond to enquiries and customer complaints to ensure resolution.

• Maintain the productivity and performance of Customer Service Representatives by motivating, monitoring, coaching, training and counselling.

• Be able to respond to operational emergencies as needed, understanding that it is a 24 hour operation.

• Maintain contact with major customers and promote positive relationships with customers.

• Manage the Short Term IT Platform (TSD) to ensure accurate reflection of the fleet.

• Generate and prepare reports on the Short Term Operations.

• Measure and report on Key Performance Indicators (Financial, Fleet Management, Customer Service, HSE/ISO)

EDUCATIONAL / SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• A Bachelor’s degree in a Management related discipline • A minimum of 4 years’ experience in a Supervisory capacity or similar experience.

Sports National COMMONWEALTH YOUTH GAMES:

Female footballers and track and field athletes set to represent TCI THE local Commonwealth Games Association has name 20 footballers and athletes to represent the Turks and Caicos Islands at the Commonwealth Youth Games set to start next Wednesday in Nassau, Bahamas.

Initially youth boxers were also set to field a team, but president of the local CG association Alvirto Ali Smith, told the Weekly News that he was forced to pull the boxers because they “did not meet the requirements”.

Of the 20 selected, two females, Alivia Brooks and

Jemima Charles will compete in both athletics and female beach soccer.

The other female beach soccer players selected are: Guerline Hall, Fabine SaintVil, Erika Jean Guy, Enie Jean-Louis, Dessa Lauren Douglas, Sydnee Campbell and Kevania Joseph.

The female athletes are: Angelica Howell, Daria Coakley, Bryana Brown, Deajah Smith and Rebecca Bernardin.

Colby Jennings, currently competing in the IAAF World U18 Championships, will lead

a male group of six athletes, which also includes Latrell Saunders, Emmanuel Agenor, Reynaldo Germain, Lavardo Campbell- and Fritz Sam Morency.

Edith Cox will travel as the team leader, while Randy Ford, Acasia Downer, Paula Garland (beach soccer) and Olivia Graveley (beach soccer) will travel as team officials.

Smith, TCICGA’s General Secretary Rita Gardiner and association member Brenda Lightbourne are also set to make the trip.

The beach soccer girls are make their debut at the Games.

Kings bounce back with win against Police THE Quality Super Kings bounced back from a humiliating opening game in the TCICA Summer T20 Cricket competition to register a victory when they competed against the Police team last Sunday at the Downtown Ballpark in Providenciales.

In the opener two Sundays ago, the Mitsubishi Tigers whipped the Kings by 99 runs. They scored 125, before bowling out their opponents for a paltry 26 runs in eight overs.

When the Kings returned to the

crease last week, they held their own against the Lawmen after Chabbie Charlie scored a half century.

Winning the toss the Police team raced to 162 before they were dismissed in 16.1 overs. Veteran cricketer Ira Baptiste blasted 41 runs (3X6s and 4X4s), while Garvin Bruno, who was outstanding last season, added 39 runs (3X6s, 3X4s).

Pawan Kumar led the Kings’ bowling attack with 3-31, while Charlie bagged 2-47. Both bowlers

bowled four overs each.

Needing to score at over eight runs per over, Charlie registered an impressive unbeaten 57 runs, punctuated with two sixes and four fours. Support came from Lloyd Lynch and Kevin Hinds. Lynch scored 21 (2X4s, 1X6), while Hinds added 20 (3X4s, 1X6) as the Kings reached the prescribed target with two balls left in the innings.

Bruno led the Lawmen with two wickets.

IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Williams ready to “give it his best” TCI born Delano Williams is ready to make his mark on the IAAF World Championships after making the British 4X400M team this week.

The sprinter, who has been a mainstay in the relay team, said that he was again humbled by the selection and plans to give it his all at the event, which is set for London next month.

The TCI 100M and 200M record holder is one of seven athletes who made the relay team.

MEDAL PROSPECTS “We have a good chance of winning the gold this year, Williams told the Weekly News. “So hopefully we’ll take our strides and do what we’re supposed to do.”

At last year’s Olympics in Rio, the Great Britain team looked set for a medal, before an infraction resulted in a disqualification. This year Williams said that the team is pumped up and will be going hard on home soil.

REPRESENTING THE TCI The Grand Turk born athlete wrote on his Facebook page that: “I wish

I was going to these championships putting on my TEAMTCI bodysuit.

When I went to Barcelona, Spain in 2012 for the World Junior Championships, I was delighted and proud to win my first World title. Things happen so quickly and I’m still representing the Turks and Caicos Islands. It’s the love I have for my island. I don’t need the title to be an ambassador. It’s in my blood.”

TURKS AND CAICOS SUPPORT The 23 year-old is still hoping for a large support from the TCI and plans to be the country’s sports ambassador on and off the field in London.

“I hope that a lot of Turks Islanders tune in and watch as we take off from the Olympics. This is a big championship for me. A lot of people can tune in to see part two of the Olympics. Let me be the ambassador for the Turks and Caicos and do what I have to do.”

Williams, who recently suffered a slight injury, said that he should be fully fit for the August 4th-13th Championships.

Delano Williams feels that the Great Britain team has a good chance of winning a gold medal at home.

Jennings was confident of a good run CARIFTA Games 400M bronze medallist Colby Jennings was confident of a solid run when he competed in the semi-finals of the IAAF World U18 Championships on Thursday afternoon in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Jamaica College student won his semi-final with a personal best run—his first time under 48 seconds.

“I had a feeling that this would happen,” he told the Weekly News after the race. According to the youngster, he had a race plan once he found out he was running in lane five.

Jennings clocked an impressive 47.36s to qualify for the final. He got past runners from Ethiopia, Kenya, Honduras, Singapore, Bahrain, China and Botswana in his heat.

Overall he had the sixth best time leading into the final, but four of the five athletes with better times had also ran personal bests.

In the first round, Jennings had to run hard from lane eight. He still finished second in his heat in a time of 48.33s.

Jennings also had to acclimatise to the Nairobi temperatures.

“It’s really cold in Kenya. The atmosphere is alright, but I’m just getting use to it.”
