Gov’t asked to refund Conch Farm fees

BY DELANA ISLES A STUNNING development has been revealed in the arbitration ruling between the Government and Trade Wind Industries that will see the Government being asked to refund the money that the company has been paying in customs processing fees since 2011.

The ruling, which is contained in the second partial award in favour of the Conch Farm operators, is published at www.gov.tc/ publication-of-awards It states the company’s 2010 development agreement excludes them from paying import tax for 15 years and that the 2011 designation of a customs processing fee (CPF) by the Government is actually custom import duties, for which they are already exempted.

The inclusion of the CPF into the company’s development agreement was made after it had been signed in 2010, and included via a proviso.

The three man London arbitration panel, during their adjudication hearing of a $100 million lawsuit brought against the Government and former governor Ric Todd by TWI in 2012, were invited to consider the legality of the CPF’s inclusion in the development agreement.

TWI had instituted the action for breaches of leases, breach of the development agreement (dated May 28, 2010), malicious falsehoods, defamation and interference by unlawful means.

The agreement initially provided a 15 year tax exemption period on import duties for articles specified in the development order.

The panel did a comprehensive examination of the CPF, which is detailed between pages four and 13 of the publication of the awards, with

the arbitrators finally concluding that the 7.5 percent CPF will not apply the Conch Farm where a tax exemption was promised for 15 years.

Contacted for a comment, managing director of Trade Wind Industries, Richard Berke told the Weekly News that they will be requesting that the Government refund the company the monies they have paid in CPFs since 2011 on imported items such as feed and other products they have bought for the conch farm.

He also stated that: “We have a $32 million renovation and upgrade budget for the import of machinery, equipment and building materials, and an average of $500,000 per year thereafter for the balance of the 15 year tax exemption period.”

Berke stated that the CPF is a bait and switch tactic that the Government employed, but that he is happy that the court agrees with the company’s stance that the fee is indeed a tax and that they do not have to pay it.

As published in the award on the Government website, the tribunal found that in examining the CPF and its application, it appeared to them that “the CPF seems to bear every characteristic of a tax such as customs duty”.

The judgement stated that this view is fortified by the Customs Ordinance relations to collection and recovery of customs duties and the offences and penalties applying to them.

The award further reads: “TWI has also drawn the tribunal’s attention to the public notice issued by the government in April 2010 giving notice that a four percent CPF would be charge on the value of all goods imported into the TCI. “The notice proceeds to state that the four percent CPF was widely discussed throughout the community as one of the revenue enhancing measures included in the recent

2011/2012 budget.

“This confirms the view of the tribunal that CPFs were regarded by the Government itself as a tax or duty.”

The tribunal stated that the manner in which they interpreted the customs import duties: “It is plain that CPFs are pecuniary charges imposed by the Government on the import of duties.”

And that if it mattered, they are also satisfied that CPFs are properly to be regarded as a customs duty upon the import of goods “despite their misnomer as a processing fee”.

For both of these reasons, the three man panel decided that CPFs are therefore custom import duties within the meaning of both the ordinance and the development agreement.

Accordingly, they stated that the Proviso to the Proposed Development Order would not comply with the Government’s obligations under the company’s development agreement.

Labour ministry reminds expired visa holders to leave ANOTHER warning to leave has been sent out to people on expired visas residing in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Ministry of Border Control and Employment Services this past week issued the reminder to visa holders that they are now residing in the country illegally.

“Such persons are encouraged to leave the country voluntarily as any such person found to be in the country illegally will be prosecuted under the law,” the ministry stated in a press release on Thursday.

Since that time, officers attached to the Immigration Department have been carrying out inspections on the roads of Providenciales, checking and verifying documents.

They have also been carrying out a number of searches within some communities for illegal migrants.

National Security Strategy to curb crime in the pipelines

BY OLIVIA ROSE A NATIONAL Security Strategy aimed at tackling crime and the causes of crime in Turks and Caicos Islands is in the pipeline.

This was confirmed in a National Security Council (NSC) statement issued on Thursday (August 17).

According to the NSC, the National Security Strategy will be devised on four pivotal pillars - prevention, intervention, enforcement and rehabilitation.

At a recent NSC meeting further recommendations made in the Security Needs Assessment Report

for TCI sponsored by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office were discussed.

The NSC also discussed the implementation of recommendations made in that report and agreed to draw on the report to formulate the National Security Strategy.

Coupled with this, the NSC engaged in further discussions on key security issues facing the nation which were highlighted by the Commissioner of Police James Smith in the RTCIPF Strategic Plan together with proposed mitigations to address the challenges.

It was agreed at the meeting that tackling crime and the source

of crime in the TCI is a cross government responsibility which needs to involve the wider society.

The National Security Council agreed that a sub-committee should be formed to bring together relevant Government departments and agencies to oversee and work on the four pillars in the strategic plan.

When formed, this sub-committee will report regularly to the NSC on progress.

Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson made a request to the UK for assistance at the resultant UK Security Assessment in February this year during her first visit to London.

SIPT prosecutor to wrap up case in November – Court breaks for three weeks

BY DELANA ISLES THE CROWN case in the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team (SIPT) trial will come to a close in early November.

Following that the eight defendants will get an opportunity to defend themselves against the charges laid against them.

This was confirmed to the Weekly News by SIPT prosecutor, Andrew Mitchell on Thursday (August 17).

The court has been on its typical three-week vacation since early August and will resume its sitting on Monday, August 28.

At that time, Mitchell said that

they will sit for three weeks, then take another three week break.

During the three weeks following its August 28 resumption, the prosecutor said that he expects to conclude with all of the civilian witnesses they have remaining, among which is Michael Misick’s former wife Lisa Raye.

Mitchell confirmed to this publication that Lisa Raye will still be flying to the Turks and Caicos Islands to give testimony before the court.

Following the next three week break, upon its resumption the Crown will be calling for evidence to be provided by the police, Mitchell disclosed to this

publication.

Back in April, the prosecutor had confirmed that the trial will not end in 2017, as was hoped.

At that time lead defendant in the trial, Michael Misick had been granted an adjournment to recruit new lead counsel after one of his attorneys resigned from the case.

The prosecutor had also expressed, back in April, that he hoped to reach a conclusion of his case before the summer adjournment of the court.

However, that will not be the case, as he has now tentatively named early November as a close to the Crown’s case.

Another recent change to the trial

was the retirement of the Special Prosecutor Helen Garlick.

Asked how this would affect the Crown’s case, Mitchell said it would not.

“Her retirement will not impact the case at all. The DPP’s (Director of Public Prosecution) Office will now have direct superintendence of the case,” he stated.

Garlick retired from the trial, which has been ongoing since 2015, on August 3.

In an official statement to the press, the DPP stated that Garlick had given notice that, for personal reasons and having reached the retirement age of 65, that she will be retiring from legal practice this year.

The acting DPP has now taken oversight of the trial, in the absence of DPP Jillian Williams, whom it was announced was experiencing ill health earlier this month.

Bail reduced for defendants in Kevino Smith’s murder trial

BY OLIVIA ROSE TWO men who are charged with the 2015 murder of Kevino ‘Bah’ Smith of Grand Turk have made bail and been released from prison.

The Weekly News was informed by a reliable source that after a major bail diminution Lamar Griffiths and Conrad Thomas are resident outside of Grand Turk as a part of their bail constraints.

Bail for the duo was placed at $15,000 with an additional surety of $10,000 following their court arraignment back in March.

However, since the duo were incapable of paying the hefty bail, they applied for a reduction and it was approved by the court.

The Weekly News was informed that Thomas made bail at a mere $3,000, also with a $10,000 surety while Griffiths made bail at $6,000 with a $10,000 surety.

Coupled with the arrest of the duo, three women were also arrested as investigators work to put together the missing pieces of the Kevino “Bah” Smith murder

case.

The three Grand Turk women, aged 19, 28 and 53 who were arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice

were released.

It has been over two years since 25-year-old Smith went missing after a reported heated confrontation.

Smith’s family, especially his

mother Patsy Smith, have been highly critical of the handling of the investigation, regularly writing on social media that her boy has been forgotten.

Dismembered remains were found in Breezy Brae, Grand Turk, in late April 2015 following an aggressive police search.

And it was in July that police finally confirmed that the remains discovered were indeed that of young Smith.

Subsequent to the discovery of his body, several suspects have been arrested and some are currently on bail for numerous offences which include murder, conspiracy to commit murder and perverting the course of justice.

Police, in a statement on their Facebook page, declared: “We are determined to establish what happened to Kevino and how he came to lose his life, which we hope will bring some closure and small comfort to his family.”

Police commissioner thanks public for help in crime fighting

BY DELANA ISLES THE COMMISSIONER of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force is sending out thanks to the members of public who have been instrumental in the force’s crime fighting efforts.

On Thursday, Commissioner James Smith especially thanked those who have provided assistance to the police in the way of information that led to the arrest of a robbery suspect.

Smith’s thanks are significant in that for several years both public officials from the Government and opposition, along with the police themselves have sent out stringent pleas to the public for their assistance, with little to no help or acknowledge of those pleas.

However, recent criminal events have sparked a major outcry locally, resulting in international recognition that has elicited negative press for the country’s main industry of tourism.

Recently (two Sundays ago) residents gathered at the Downtown ballpark in Providenciales to protest the mounting crime situation and to promise to work along with the police in its crime fighting efforts.

That march was organised by Alison Capron-Advani, former Miss TCI Earth and television personality.

The Tourist Board and other tourism partners have also resolved

to help crime fighters in getting the situation under control before irreparable damage is done to the country’s main economic driver.

Commissioner Smith addressed this strong outpouring of support: “During the past few weeks, we received strong support from the public regarding a number of incidents we are investigating.”

He stated that as a result of information his officers have arrested and charged a number of men with serious offences that have been committed.

Two wanted men (21 and 28-yearolds) were arrested within the last two weeks, one of whom was arrested for aggravated burglary in connection with a report made on Friday, January 13.

The other was charged with four counts of robbery, all involving firearms, committed on separate occasions.

They were both remanded to prison.

Smith further reported that during the last few weeks, police arrested and charged a 21-year-old man with robbery and possession of imitation firearm in connection to a report made on Thursday, August 3.

He added that in addition to this several others are in police custody pending investigations into other serious offences.

“As officers continue to work hard to identify other persons responsible for crime, members of the public

are asked to remain vigilant and not hesitate to report suspicious activity or persons.

“As part of our ongoing operational activity in response to a number of serious crimes, you may see additional policing activity carried throughout Providenciales,” the commissioner said.

He further encouraged residents to continue to work along with the police as they would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity.

Most school works to be completed by September

BY DAISY HANDFIELD MINISTER of Education Karen Malcolm said that most repairs across Government schools in the TCI will be complete for the new academic year.

Her comment came after the former Minister of Education and Long Bay MP Akierra Missick expressed concerns that the schools would not be ready in time.

Malcolm explained that contracts to do the work have already gone out and have been approved.

She said: “The school works have basically started at some schools, but we will push to get that completed for the new school year.

“I know that the time is short, but we will definitely work with the Ministry of Infrastructure to really get everything completed before the new school year.”

Minister of Education had was what will happen to third form students at the Long Bay High School, especially since the new academic

school year is quickly approaching.

She questioned where these students will be placed since those classrooms will not be available because of work being done to complete the third and final stage of the Long Bay High School.

The new Minister of Education responded by stating that the third form students will have to attend Clement Howell High School this new academic school year, but will be transferred to Long Bay High School next September for that new academic year.

One last issue Malcolm addressed was the lack of air conditioners in some of the classrooms at some Government schools.

She said that although a number of primary schools had air conditioners, going forward the Government will do its best to budget funds to assist with implementing air conditioners in all classrooms.

WHAT’S THE MATTER?

IT HAS now been one month since an agreement has reportedly been reached in the dispute between the parties involved in the proposed 12-storey Ritz Carlton hotel for Providenciales.

Although two of the parties in the case - the two Strata Corporation Hotels - have indicated to the press that they have reached an agreement for the former to drop its case, the Government has not offered any explanation to the public on the matter.

Death knell

The intelligent people in the TCI who can actually think beyond their next pay cheque realise that doubling the height and density in the TCI is the death knell for the country.

The intelligent, forward thinking leaders in the PDM (who were previously against raising the heights and densities) were clearly hoping that the recent legal action would prevail so they didn’t have to make any tough decision that might alienate them from some of their voters.

Just as parents need to stand up to their misguided teenage children, true leaders who really care about the future of their people have to make unpopular decisions sometimes.

It’s time for those who have the ‘smarts’ to read the data and do the right thing. Reverse the stupidity of the PNP before it’s too late.

were considered in the last 13 years is: extra storeys were for sale (that is how we got Seven Stars), and the only way the PNP party could get investors interested to take the risks of investing with them was high density and quick return on their investment.

High end please

Do we really want to look like Miami and end up with thousands of low dollar tourists, rather than hundreds of high end spenders?

Twelve storeys mean voting for being inundated with folks looking for a deal.

Too sad that those in power for the last 15 years have ignored every single recommendation to stick with our current high end tourism product.

Protect our niche

We have a tiny niche in a big market that ought to be maintained, not destroyed.

The vast majority of visitors say they come here because there are no high rise buildings, and the place is not crowded.

Instead of this foolishness, we should be investing in kids, teaching them trades and arts and crafts and agriculture, so that the country is not dependent only on hospitality.

Big shake-up coming up for national parks

BY OLIVIA ROSE PROPOSED amendments to the Turks and Caicos national parks ordinance will see the expansion of existing protected areas, new areas coming under protection and some current protected areas re-designated.

That’s according to Minister of Tourism Ralph Higgs who recently updated the House of Assembly on the concluded public consultation on the national parks.

The amendments to the National Parks Ordinance, Regulations and Order commenced in 2006 when a report entitled, ‘Review and reassessment of the TCI protected area system’ was presented to the Government by Nautilus Consultants.

Back in November 2015, irate residents launched an online petition to the Government after news surfaced that there were plans to release certain areas of the national park for private development.

The online petition was an attempt by a section of the public to repeal the Government’s consideration to convert specific areas of the park into development zones which would disrupt its ecology.

Speaking in the House of Assembly on July 26, Minister Higgs stressed that in every circumstance, due consideration would be given to establish balance between the environment and commerce.

He said: “The ministry and the DECR are currently compiling and

reviewing the data received.

“The findings from this public consultation process will help to guide the decision making as it relates to the proposed Parks Amendments.

“Following which, the prerequisite paper will be drafted and submitted for cabinet’s review and endorsement,” the minister said.

The public consultation report on amendments to the national parks ordinance which was published by the Ministry of Tourism, Environment, Heritage and Culture on August 24, 2016, stipulates that all development must be in keeping with the conservation of the natural environment and ecology of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

However, on April 14, 2016 Cabinet approved several amendments to the National Parks ordinance: “The following are prohibited within all national parks; the removal of sand, rock, coral, coral-rag or any calcareous substance except where such removal is necessary to maintain wise-use and access to a navigational channel, dock or marina.

“The destruction of, or damage or injury to any animal or plant, except for allowable uses as outlined under Section 4(1)(a) of the ordinance, or activities covered under a valid scientific research permit.

“The following are prohibited within all nature reserves; the taking of any animal or plant by any method on land or at sea, except to the extent permitted in any fishing zone or non-commercial fishing zone and for allowable uses as outlined under Section 4(1)(b) of the ordinance

PROPOSED CHANGES The Government had proposed several changes to the ordinance which included: “Removing Split

Well drilling and road works for Glass Shack area THE MINISTRY of Infrastructure, housing and planning is advising members of the public of upcoming well drilling and road works in Glass Shack.

The works are part of the road development phase two in Providenciales and a completion of phase one of Glass Shack.

From August 17 to September 1 the well drilling will take place.

The ministry further advises that the contract estimated time for full completion inclusive of installation of drainage wells, side walk and asphalted roads is 150 days equivalent to five months.

During this time, residents are advised to take caution in the designated area.

Residential and business

access will remain unaffected throughout this phase of works.

The awarded contractor for this work - Herzog Caribbean Limited - will employ all measures to facilitate access for the duration of the project.

In the interest of safety and in agreement with Turks and Caicos Islands Government and the relevant authorities, appropriate traffic management measures, such as appropriate signage, will be implemented to direct and assist vehicle users during this time.

Residents are asked to drive with due care and consideration during the course of this project as the Government facilitates the necessary infrastructural upgrades.

Rock and Pirates Cove from the national park to allow a shipping dock to be built.”

A clause is being added to allow ‘wise-use,’ that is any developmental dredging in any protected area in the country.

Silly Island and parts of Chalk Sound are being removed from the national park.

Parts of Frenchman’s Creek and Pigeon Pond Nature Reserve, which are crucial areas for juvenile marine life, are being removed from the national park.

According to many who signed the petition these are disastrous changes since it would have a drastic impact on maritime life and the environment.

The public was up in arms about these changes, since many people were sold lots on the east end of Chalk Sound and they had unwittingly built their homes in a protected area and their lots would be taken out of the protected areas based on the proposals.

Overwhelming comments focused on the proposed removal of areas from Chalk Sound National Park (including

Leeward channel dredging commences – Boaters warned to beware THE BOATING community is on notice to pay particular care while operating in Block 60903 Leeward channel in Providenciales as construction work is carried out.

That construction started on Friday, August 11, and includes the creation of canal access, beach, pier structures and docks, approach dredging and site grading.

Windward Development Company (Blue Cay Estate Project) is carrying out the works, which will be completed on or about November 30, the Maritime Department advised in a press statement.

“Due to this, we are asking all watersports operators; specifically captains, skippers, charter companies, and jet ski operators to please take note of the project and to be vigilant whilst operating in the designated area.

“We ask all persons to adhere to the wake speed of 5mph, as speeding may move the turbidity curtains around,” the release read.

or activities covered under a valid scientific research permit.”

Coupled with these changes the taking of any animal or plant by any method on land or at sea, within all sanctuaries is prohibited, except for allowable uses as outlined under Section 4(b)(2) of the ordinance.

Additionally, all current “fishing zones” (i.e. one found in the Columbus Landfall National Park, Grand Turk, and the other found in the East Harbour Lobster and Conch Reserve, South Caicos) will be redesignated as “non-commercial fishing zones”.

Several guidelines for developments in protected areas will be implemented: “All development must be in keeping with the spirit of the National Parks Ordinance, which has a stated purpose of the conservation of the natural environment and ecology of the islands.

“All development must be ‘off the grid’ and must have sustainable means of generating electricity, treating wastewater and providing fresh water, e.g. solar and wind generated renewable energy, wastewater reuse and rainwater collection.

“All developments must be constructed of natural materials and should be designed to avoid the need to clear any vegetation.

“For example, wooden structures supported by piles, rather than cement slabs, etc, no artificial landscaping will be permissible, and no landscaping chemicals, e.g. fertiliser, pesticide, herbicide shall be used.

“No development shall take place until appropriate locations for such development are identified via a thorough study, undertaken by qualified environmental professionals, which incorporates environmental impact assessment.”

The Turks and Caicos Islands has a system of protected areas which includes national parks, nature reserves, sanctuaries and areas of historical interest.

Residents and businesses urged to prepare for hurricane season

WITH the Atlantic hurricane season underway and forecasters predicting an above-average number of storms, local emergency management officials are urging residents and businesses to make a plan and be prepared.

This comes as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) has revised its original forecast.

It is now predicting that the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season outlook will be worse than previously forecast.

In their August update, released on Wednesday August 9, forecasters indicated that there is a 60 percent chance of an above-average Hurricane Season, with 14 to 19 named storms expected throughout the season.

This is an increase from 11 to 17 named storms as previously forecasted.

In light of the updated forecast, Dr Virginia Clerveaux, Director of the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME), in a press release said despite the predictions from the experts, from experience it only takes one storm to affect the development gains that the Turks and Caicos Islands have achieved

LAX APPROACH TO HURRICANE SEASON Only recently Dr Clerveaux bemoaned the lax approach residents have to preparing for hurricanes in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

She said that when it comes to preparing, residents do not act with any sense of urgency.

“Since we have not had a direct hit since 2008 [hurricanes Hanna and Ike], there is a sense of complacency that is creeping back into the system.

“You do not always get the sense of urgency where persons recognise that it’s hurricane season and they need to prepare and take measures to ensure that their home or business is properly secured.

“That is why the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies is always thinking of new ways to reinvent its public education programme to ensure that persons do not get tired of the same message or the same medium.”

The director added that those who were impacted by hurricanes Ike and Hanna are the few people who take heed of the precautionary advice.

“Persons that were directly impacted by Ike and Hanna definitely would recall the level of devastation,

the fear that they experienced and the suffering.

“Those people are more likely to respond more quickly than those who were on the other islands or away during the passage of the storm and they did not have to deal with it.

“So, for us in the department, and throughout the region you would notice that there are always references to past storms that have devastated that country.

“Here in the Turks and Caicos Islands, we will always seek to remind persons of hurricane Ike and tropical storm Hanna,” she said.

She encouraged people to take the necessary precautions and not wait until a major storm strikes to properly prepare, because minor storms can also cause major damage.

“Therefore, it is important that Government departments, businesses and residents in the Turks and Caicos Islands ensure that they are prepared this hurricane season and continue to monitor information from DDME’s website and social media pages.”

Dr Clerveaux recently stated that her department is continually improving preparedness and readiness by reviewing and updating emergency operation plans and ensuring all essential personnel are trained.

Governor welcomes new financial adviser GOVERNOR John Freeman has welcomed the arrival of Alex Mills, who has been appointed as the Financial Adviser to the Governor.

The new post was created following the decision by the UK government to abolish the position of Chief Financial Officer at the end of March.

Mills will work closely with the Ministry of Finance and other government departments and financial institutions to advise the Governor on economic developments in the TCI. Before coming to the TCI, Mills held the position of Chief Accountant in the UK House of Commons where he has worked in several financial roles since 2005.

Unlike the Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Adviser to the Governor has no executive role in or powers over the TCI Government’s financial decisions.

It is a purely advisory position which is being funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Commenting on the appointment Freeman said: “I am delighted to

“I regard this as a key position which I believe will be of benefit

Significant focus is also placed on improving the ability to respond and recover from disasters.

The DDME has stressed that being aware of hazards and having a plan for evacuation, in the case a tropical cyclone (hurricane) occurs,

can be lifesaving.

The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and concludes on November 30. The storms that occur during this time are among the most powerful and destructive of all natural phenomena.

Cabinet approves emergency funding for NHIB

– Cites ineffective management FUNDING has been approved by the Cabinet for the National Health Insurance Board (NHIB) in order to avoid any default in payments to local and overseas providers.

The announcement came via a post Cabinet statement on Thursday (August 17) following a meeting chaired by Governor John Freeman the following day at the Hilly Ewing building in Providenciales.

At that meeting all ministers were present when the decision was made.

It was triggered by a paper presented by Minister of Health Edwin Astwood on the financial state of the insurance board.

Cabinet expressed grave concern about the state of the NHIB’s finances and the lack of effective management by the NHIB, and called for urgent steps to remedy the situation.

As such, an agreement was reached for immediate measures to be taken.

The release states that given financial commitments incurred by the NHIB which must be settled, Cabinet advised the

Governor to approve additional funding for the NHIB from the contingency fund to avoid the NHIB being in default to local and overseas providers.

Meanwhile, other issues discussed by the panel included the National Honours and Awards.

Cabinet noted the recommendations of the National Honours and Awards Committee for nominations for honours and awards for 2017 to be made at the National Honours and Awards Ceremony on October 9.

The body agreed to publish the names of nominated recipients in the Gazette no later than six weeks prior to October 9, in accordance with section three of the National Honours and Awards Ordinance and Subsidiary Legislation 2014.

Additionally, Cabinet members were presented with an information paper from the Premier updating them on the progress to appoint a consultant to carry out a review of the TCI statutory bodies, which is expected to commence on September 4.

These sentiments were expressed

by Deputy Premier and Minister of Immigration, Sean Astwood, during an important meeting last Tuesday, August 8.

He met with leaders of the larger migrant communities as a precursor to his ministry’s crackdown on those residing illegally in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Since the deputy premier’s announcement of stricter controls and enhanced enforcement of the immigration laws, there has been widespread speculation on the upcoming actions.

In this vein the purpose of the meeting was to provide factual information that the representatives could disseminate to persons in their respective communities.

Minister Astwood met with consul representatives of the Philippines, Jamaica and Haiti to discuss the current measures that were declared on July 26 in the House of Assembly.

His meeting with consul representatives preceded a meeting on Thursday, August 10, with pastors of the Haitian community.

Minister Astwood informed the Weekly News that during the meetings attendees were briefed on the aims of his ministry to regularise immigration in the TCI. He further assured them that the intention of this ongoing initiative is to ensure that everyone in the territory is there legally and that all laws are being adhered to.

Astwood noted that it is imperative for his administration, guided by legal framework, to safeguard the lives of all people who live, work and visit these shores.

He informed the attendees on what can be expected after the August 14 deadline.

Astwood spoke about his approach

Kew Town man gets seven years for shooting CYDIREO Smith, 20, of Kew Town has been sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of wounding with intent.

Smith was charged with the crime following a report made to police on Friday, January 6.

On that date victim Lewis Iton had an altercation with Smith in which Smith tried to stab him.

Following this, at about 10.30pm Smith left the scene and returned with a gun and fired three shots at him.

Iton received a gunshot wound to the right shoulder.

Police immediately launched an investigation after the report was filed and acting on information on January 7, detectives saw and arrested Smith on suspicion of attempted murder.

He was later charged with wounding with intent.

During his court appearance in the Supreme Court before Judge Robert Shuster, he pleaded guilty to the charge.

A pre-sentencing report was ordered and on August 10, Smith was sentenced to serve seven years in prison.

Police have never recovered the firearm used in the shooting.

He stressed that the Immigration Task Force, in conjunction with the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force will perform stop and search operations, and those found to not be in possession of a valid TCI status will be detained and processed.

He said: “While some deportation is anticipated, the department will be keen to look at each case on an individual basis to ensure that persons falling outside of the intended target objective are not disadvantaged by the operations, and that all others are either repatriated or charged and deported in which case they too will be added to the Immigration Stop List.”

At the meeting, he underscored the need for people to use the period given to either regularise themselves, or to leave the country voluntarily, as this will permit re-entry at a later

date, through legal means once approved to do so.

Minister Astwood noted that the meetings were fruitful and he is confident that the meetings provided a platform to address the migrant communities concerns regarding the ministry’s ongoing initiatives.

He said: “It also gave an opportunity to share this Government’s vision and expectations of the migrant population that remain amongst us with the hope that the consuls and pastors, as leaders within their own right, will provide clarity to persons in their communities and further encourage them to abide here following all of the laws of our country.”

The deputy premier emphasised the need for all persons to work together to protect the borders and people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

“Illegal migration threatens the lives and livelihood of our people.

My ministry and this Government will continue to work diligently to enforce the laws of this land for the protection of our people and the

preservation of our country.”

“Make no mistake, we welcome persons from all nationalities to legally enter and reside in TCI and while your main concern is your people, please know that these measures are not just towards some, but they apply to all persons and nationalities that choose to visit, work or live amongst us.”

The minister also disclosed that new policies and frameworks on work permits, border enforcement and improvements in processing and other operational policies and procedures will be introduced to the public soon.

The deadline to regularise status expired on August 15, which was Tuesday of this week, this saw joint law enforcement operations in full clampdown mode.

Minister Astwood has maintained that this immigration initiative is just the beginning of a long term goal to restore balance and order in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Traffic stops will be a norm, Immigration Minister says

BY DAISY HANDFIELD IMMIGRATION officials have teamed up with police to start conducting traffic stop searches in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The move comes as the deadline for migrant workers whose visas have expired to leave the country passed this week.

Officers were positioned throughout Providenciales on Tuesday (August 15) stopping vehicles and requesting identification from drivers.

Those who did not have the appropriate documents to be in the Turks and Caicos Islands were detained and taken to the Detention Centre for deportation.

The Deputy Premier and Border Control Minister, Sean Astwood,

shared these sentiments during a sitting of the House of Assembly earlier this month.

He said that any person found illegally residing or working in the TCI after August 15 will be charged, deported and added to the Immigration Stop List.

In an interview this week with the Astwood following the raids, he said that people are expected to keep identification on them at all times.

As police and immigration continue to conduct their task force operations, people will be required to show evidence of their legal stay in the country, he said.

“This is not a one-off scenario.

This is not something that is intended to be done for one or two weeks.

“This is the new way of life in the

Turks and Caicos, where we will be enforcing the immigration laws.”

The minister said that any person, foreign or otherwise, found aiding or harbouring illegal migrants will be arrested, charged and prosecuted under the law.

All persons found guilty of such acts who would have acquired status prior to then will be at risk of losing their status and those who have not will nullify any possible qualification for status.

He said: “Any company found employing illegal migrants will be charged under the law and we will be working with other Government agencies, like the Business Licensing Authority, for meaningful implications to operations for those found guilty of such activity moving forward.”

Islanders homeless in their homeland – PART TWO

Dear Editor, This is absolutely appalling! It is also a violation of TCI land law because Crown land cannot be sold to nonBelongers and this is a back-door method for outsiders to own Crown land. With a house on it!

This cannot be legal and needs thorough investigation. Right now.

No different from a previous TCI Government can-of-worms selling of Crown land on the open market that led to a Commission of Inquiry.

What is worse is that there are zero agencies or organisations, government or otherwise, to police this. It is like the fox having full access to the henhouse.

Where are the elected

representatives and overseeing British government as this ‘silent robbery’ is taking place? Where does one turn?

This is where TC Forum comes in. This voluntary NGO has, from the beginning, seen itself as a group committed to looking out for the interests of each and every TC Islander, and speaking out when those interests seem to be in jeopardy.

That is why they sent a four-man strong team to the United Nations in New York many years ago to speak on colonial matters impacting the TCI; that is why they have gone back three times since then to push for changes and improvements; that is why they have taken the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to task on many issues

related to its appalling oversight of TCI; that is why when the British interim government took over the TCI they requested and had, at Governor’s House, a meeting with then Governor Wetherell and his CEO, and put them on notice of their concerns surrounding this takeover; that is why they have, on various occasions throughout the years, conducted island-wide town hall meetings, and radio and TV appearances on pressing TCI matters; and that is why they cannot sit by and allow this silent robbery to take place, in allowing young people to become houseless and landless and in worse shape than their parents and grandparents.

This is not progress and development. But what can be done

Consider this. Most of us grew

up in our parents and grandparents houses and land in the TCI. Whether these houses were of clapboard wood and many of them were, of quarry stones, or from codfish box wood, they were the outright properties of our ancestors.

In other words they owed no one.

Is this progress and advancement when, one and two generations later, their children and grandchildren, have no land, roof over their head, and houses to call their own, because the system in place allows this birth right to be taken away by newcomers?

Our TCI nature is to welcome newcomers but under no circumstances can this be called progress, and under no circumstances should we allow this robbery-inprogress to keep on keeping on. Act now!

This self-righteous stuff Short changing A PERSON with a self-righteous attitude thinks he knows it all, is always right, can do things better than others and can achieve better results.

He feels his morals are higher than those of others and that he knows what is good for others, better than they do for themselves.

He also cannot take advice.

This disposition comes from a situation where persons lived in modest circumstances, and to gain recognition they exaggerate and engage in pretence.

For example, there is an individual whose height is not that of most persons. Because he wants attention he is loud, shouting at the top of his voice, as if this gives him the recognition his height denies.

When in a position of authority, he is aggressive, impolite and does not take kindly to compliments, since this is being soft, and does not bring about the compliance of others.

This is a form of selfrighteousness.

Most tall persons use their height to impose their will and see it as a form of power.

Someone said tall politicians use height to dominate and control others through fear and gesticulations.

They feel their stature gives the impression they can make

things happen and use it to make demands hoping to frighten others into delivering what they want.

This is a common element of selfrighteous behaviour.

On one occasion, a skilled individual was asked to do some work in a home. He gives the impression he knows more than others about what is required and walks around with religious literature, feeling this gives him respect and authority.

When informed of the work to be done, he went ahead and disregarded the instructions.

The home owner came home and noticed the shelves needed to be lower since they were too high for him to put his kids’ awards on.

When the person was told, he was abusive and refused to do the alterations. His self-righteousness prevented him from showing humility since he felt whatever he did was right irrespective of what others thought.

The self-righteous person often corrects others and gives the impression he is ‘Mr know it all’.

He feels only his opinion matters and that his way is better than the alternative.

He thinks he gains more from an event than others and has deeper insights into what an episode was about.

He also feels others are not endowed with the intelligence he has, even with similar exposure.

This self-righteous stuff is counteracted by incisive questioning of the individual, showing the short-comings of his position, requesting evidence and reasoning with him, presenting contrary arguments.

At some point, reason prevails and results in the individual having a more flexible approach.

This alters his world view and he develops a healthier outlook.

TCI students Dear Editor, Despite the PNP taking possession of an almost bankrupt Turks and Caicos Islands Government after the election of 2012, that party managed to provide over 100 scholarships for TCI students during the first year of the PNP administration and that party eventually worked up to nearly 300 scholarships for TCI students in 2016.

Conversely, the PDM took possession of the Turks and Caicos Islands Government in 2016 with a nearly $65 million budget surplus and the PDM have approved only 43 of the 280 applications for scholarships submitted by TCI students.

Where is the PDM’s commitment

to the education of our children?

How can the current PDM Government justify intentionally reducing the number of scholarships available to TCI students while simultaneously rubber-stamping unlimited supplemental appropriations for the Attorney General’s Office and Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles to pursue unnecessary civil litigation that prevents development and jobs which we so desperately need?

Without this there would be a surplus of funds available in the TCI treasury for scholarships to educate our children, and honest developers might return to our shores.

TCI needs rehab centre, says Police Commissioner

Antigua and Sandals dispute -PART TWO

Dear Editor, To prime minister Browne’s credit, he appeared to have gone to great lengths to accommodate Mr Stewart.

Notwithstanding this, Sandals and the labour union in Antigua and Barbuda seems to have worked in concert to take advantage of the prime minister’s kindness.

The prime minister and his Cabinet granted Sandals extensive concessions and were prepared to grant even more to prevent Sandals from closing for the five months they were threatening.

The government even showed deference to the resorts when amending the legislation which sought to make it mandatory for owners of properties that have over three percent of the bedroom capacity in Antigua and Barbuda to meet with the government first before closing for a period exceeding two months in a calendar year.

The amendment addressed the failure on the part of the resorts to give such advanced notice and states that tax concessions “may” be clawed back by the minister of finance, in Cabinet, if the owners did not comply.

This is not to say that closures for extended periods would not be granted, but merely to provide the government with the opportunity to

mitigate through negotiations with the developer any attempt for these properties to close at all.

So, while I do agree that this initiative is something that we in the TCI and the rest of the Caribbean should support in putting up a united front to Sandals, it is hardly a panacea for how we ought to deal with a bully.

The only way to stop the ‘bully’ in its tracks is when they make such threats to close down for long periods, the targeted government dares them to do so.

God help that government if they did, because I don’t know of any government in the Caribbean that is prepared to go to its people and tell them that they can’t come to terms with the giant so the employees and their children would have to go to bed hungry because the resort is closing for three months.

It becomes even more mind boggling when a government is relying on flights to come to their country with passengers so that they can collect departure and accommodation taxes to meet expenditures and pay their countries’ loan obligations.

It is noteworthy too that with all the hoopla going on in Antigua and Barbuda, Sandals still will remain closed for the three months they

indicated which will take them up to the end of December 2017.

And in doing so, none of the very generous concessions from the Government are being withheld.

From the looks of things, the Antiguan government showered them with even more concessions because they were mindful of the dire consequences that closure would bring.

As for the TCI, I do think that we need to give credit to our government when that credit is due.

In saying that, I do recognise that there is still vast room for improvement with the rest hospitality sector as we are indeed being exploited in many respects.

Nowhere is that exploitation greater than in the tour/excursion businesses operated by our people.

But in terms of us learning how to deal with a bully from this episode that is taking place in Antigua and Barbuda, I don’t agree.

Our relationship with and the benefits that we get from our resort industry in the TCI is far better than what exists in most countries in the Caribbean.

In fact, if the truth were to be told, I believe that they can learn a thing or two from us.

COMMISSIONER of Police James Smith said that there should be a heavier punishment for some criminals to stop them from becoming second time offenders.

He expressed these sentiments in an interview earlier this week and added that there should be more of a focus on rehabilitation, early diversion and education.

“How can we stop people from getting into that cycle of crime?

“There is no outcome to this if we cannot divert people away from crime once they have been pulled into it.”

Smith said that it is the responsibility of the Government to implement a realistic rehabilitation programme to discourage repeat offenders.

“The Government, I think, recognises fully that they have to do things fully around rehabilitation, about mentoring, about tutoring and about taking people away from crime.

“I think sometimes we get disappointed about our sentences, but I am sure it is because the magistrate or the judge has decided that that punishment fits the circumstances of the individual involved.

“So, it is not always an easy thing to determine,” he said.

A rehabilitation centre has been on the Government’s agenda for some time now, but the public is yet to see any progress.

Actually, the native population is being reduced and that is not a good thing. It is also not a new thing. Folks have been leaving since the 1980s.

The possibility of immigrating to the United States is one reason.

Unlike other Caribbean nations, TCI citizens are welcome to visit America.

The 10-year visa which can be renewed again and again allows our people to stay up to six months in the states legally.

Many of our woman gave birth to their TCI children in the USA and this gave their children dual citizenship.

education were not available in the TCI the kids moved to the US. Now those mature children are bringing their older parents to the US because they have been short changed by a pension system that rewards some chief ministers out of proportion to their contributions.

Contributions which in some cases have been negative. The

pensions given to the ordinary citizen did not follow the growth in the cost of living.

Cost increases caused by reckless and immoral government spending and then heavy taxation to pay it all back.

Then there is the issue of healthcare. Unless you are employed and paying 14 percent into NIB/ NHIP or willing to give up some of

your small pension - no healthcare for you.

Primary care has been in decline since 2004 and only now does the PDM ‘Change Government’ promise to invest in primary care.

We are spending $240,000 over 20 years for 30 patient rooms and have farmed out for ¾ of one billion dollars, secondary care to Interhealth Canada located nearly 2,000 miles away in an office.

Do they provide healthcare? They fail to diagnose most problems and send our people to Jamaica, Nassau or the DR. Medical director/premier Ewing got rich and folks got sick - some died.

All this the result of the Government beginning in late 2003.

Finally, in December 2016 the voters chose change.

Commissioner of Police James Smith

Opposition Washington Misick released a statement on crime in which he said that there seems to be no major progress in the resolution to TCI’s crime problem.

He said: “We must spare no cost to analyse the cause and effect of the current chaotic spate of criminal activities and remove the root of it regardless to any short-term inconvenience or adjustments we may have to make.”

Commissioner Smith added that a large number of violent crimes in the country are committed by young men.

“It is our estimate, and it can only be an estimate, that we are dealing with mid-teen [criminals].

“So, aged 15 to 16 are really serious violent criminals in the country and that is where our attention is focused. They are the people that we are determined to bring to justice,” he said.

Now we are taking action on illegal border breaking which we call ‘immigration’.

Real immigration is choosing what foreigners will enter TCI. Enter to live, work and build their lives here. They need to bring needed skills and seek assimilation.

We also need to open the doors to retiring US and Canadian or South Americans who will bring their savings and foreign earned pensions to spend here.

Spend to build and maintain homes and enjoy ‘Beautiful

by Nature,’ not 12 stories of concrete towering above them.

Middle/North Caicos anyone?

Yes, the TCI can be another Shangri-La but it will take work and a whole lot of change. The secrets to growth are not really a secret.

Sharlene and the PDM Government are beginning by asking the Lord for his assistance.

Police receive two new marine boats

BY DAISY HANDFIELD POLICE have invested in two new marine boats to help them in the fight against illegal migration and the smuggling of guns into the Turks and Caicos Islands.

After nearly two years of waiting, the boats finally arrived in the TCI earlier this week.

The news of the investment was first shared by the Commissioner of Police James Smith during a press conference at the police headquarters in Providenciales on April 27.

At the time, Commissioner Smith explained that with the implementation of these new boats also comes employment for those interested in joining the force.

He said: “We are using this opportunity to promote experienced, specialised officers to fill the most critical skills gaps that exist in the force, including our Criminal Investigation Department, our Cyber

Crime team, our Tactical Units and our Marine Branch officers.”

Akierra Missick, former Minister of Education and the Long Bay constituency MP, said in an interview earlier this week that she was elated about the boats, especially since it is an initiative budgeted under the PNP administration.

She said: “I was so elated when I saw the pictures circulating on social media yesterday [Tuesday].

“The long-awaited police boats that our Government had tendered in 2016 and budgeted for had finally arrived.

“It means that our police officers, especially the marine branch who now have a few more officers attached to it, will have these very important tools to do their works in patrolling our borders, assisting with illegal migration, any sort of poaching and any sort of unauthorised fishing in our waters in the TCI. “I am very pleased and I celebrate

BY DAISY HANDFIELD CRAWFISH season officially opened on August 15 and fisherman went out in their boats that morning and came back in the afternoon with their catch for the day.

Media were present at the plant in Five Cays, Providenciales, on the opening day and watched as DECR officers inspected the fishermen’s catch as they arrived to shore.

The opening of the season looked quite successful, but the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) will provide the official statistics at a later date.

As has been the case for the past five seasons the crawfish season opens on August 15, and DECR officials stated that this has proven successful in reducing the quantity of egg-bearing lobsters landed, and is believed to have contributed to increased abundance and landing of crawfish.

Prior to the opening of the season, acting director of the DECR, Ethan Griesbach issued a statement which said that the past few seasons have seen an increase in the catch per unit of effort, which is a reassuring statistic suggesting a healthy and rebuilding crawfish stock.

It read: “This will provide social, economic and environmental benefits

“We need to continue to implement the measures we have in place which includes enforcement and monitoring the fishery, to assure our actions are guided by strong science.”

DECR released the restriction policies from the Fisheries Protection Ordinance, as it relates to crawfish.

It is illegal to catch a crawfish when whole, a length of three point two five [3.25] inches measured from the front of the groove between the horns directly above the eyes, along the middle of the back to the rear edge of the back shell; or when the tail has been separated, a tail weight of five ounces whether processed or not.

Fishers are not to be in the possession of any egg-bearing

crawfish.

Fishers are not to take or be in possession of moulting or softshelled crawfish or crawfish in early stages of spawning (described as appearing ‘tar-spotted’).

Fishers are to ensure that the crawfish are landed unharmed and whole after being taken and landed at processing plants or at home, unless processed at sea as per the terms of the processing licence.

The DECR appeals to citizens, residents and visitors in the TCI, to familiarise themselves with and to uphold the Fisheries Regulations, and urges all responsible citizens to call DECR at 338-4170 or email environment@gov.tc to report any violations.

The last day of the Crawfish season will be March 31, 2018.

Police recruit new foreign officers

BY DAISY HANDFIELD THIRTEEN Jamaican officers and one Filipino officer have been recruited by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF).

The officers were sworn in as constables on Monday (August 14) by Commissioner of Police James Smith.

The already trained officers from Jamaica are David Barnett, Marlon Dawkins, Christopher Morrison, Robert McClean, Horace Chung, Renaldo Burke, Monique Brandford, Rory Burke, Dexter Anthony, Marlon Morse, Andrea Lewis and Carl Wynters; and from the Philippines Daphney Alcima.

The officers are presently undergoing an orientation and introduction session to the force’s Code of Conduct.

They will be assigned to the Criminal Investigations Department, Tactical Unit and Marine Branch.

Commissioner James Smith spoke on the recruitment in a press conference at the police headquarters in April.

He stated that the force would be recruiting new faces, but was looking to hire trained officers, so that they could get straight to work and to avoid unnecessary

expenses when it came down to the training process.

“We are using this opportunity to promote experienced, specialised officers to fill the most critical skills gaps that exist in the force, including our Criminal Investigation Department, our Cyber Crime team, our Tactical Units and our Marine Branch officers,” he said.

In addition, the force has invested in two additional Canine Units this year, in an effort to detect drugs and illegal guns.

The units contain highly trained dogs and handlers.

Throughout the press conference the Commissioner of Police appealed to the public to assist with fighting crime.

He emphasised that the police force is doing all that it can to tackle crime, but the public has to help in the fight.

“The police can do a part of this, and we do. We do proactive deployment, raids on houses…

“We need to help and assist the Customs Department and others involved in keeping our borders secure to make sure that they cannot come in here [illegal guns and drugs].

“There must be people here who know where guns are being stored or stashed, and they need to tell us.”

The 2017 Sailrock Summer Interns will have the opportunity to earn salaries and learn handson in the hospitality industry by applying knowledge gained from the classroom to real industry situations.

Sailrock believes that this early introduction into the hospitality industry will assist the summer interns in developing their future career paths.

The inaugural Sailrock Summer Internship Programme was created exclusively for students of Marjorie Basden High School in South Caicos, as an introduction to the hospitality industry.

The programme began on July 10 and will finish on August 26.

Interns complete summer employment at FortisTCI TWENTY-five high school students and three college interns completed summer employment at FortisTCI on Friday, August 11.

The annual internship was held under the company’s 2017 student intern programme (SIP) and summer student employment (SSEP) programme.

Following the internship, Ruth Forbes, FortisTCI senior vice president of corporate services and CFO, spoke of the utility company’s commitment to providing work experience opportunities.

“We were delighted to host these students and were impressed with the energy and enthusiasm they brought to the various departments to which they were assigned,” she said.

FortisTCI’s SIP and SSEP programmes serve to expose students to various professional careers within the electric utility industry.

The SIP enables high school students to experience a highly developed workplace environment and understand the types of career paths available at electric utilities.

Two groups of high school students worked for a two-week period to gain hands-on experience in their respective fields of interests within the company.

The first group of 12 students began working Monday, July 17.

These students were Travante Brown, Lexcianna Stubbs, Shanta Been, Gianna Roberts, Juan Williams, Christhofer Lugo, Roshawn Cox, Yana Alessandra Villanueva, Christina Tanis, Ira Carmela Ongjoco, Declan Beresford and Alysse Maynard.

FortisTCI managers with summer interns

These students represented several schools from across the Islands.

This year’s three college interns were Loren Hall, Ebeni Ingham and Zindzi Hamilton.

Ms Hall recently graduated from British West Indies Collegiate, where she distinguished herself as the best performing student in her area of interest in year 12, and was the valedictorian.

As of September, she expects to be at the University of Liverpool, where she will pursue a dual major in marketing and public relations.

Ingham is a graduate of HJ Robinson High School and successfully completed her Associates of Applied Science degree in Accounting at Monroe College in June 2017.

She will attend Tuskegee University this fall, where she will pursue a dual undergraduate degree in accounting and business information systems.

Hamilton is a graduate of British West Indies Collegiate and has

an Associate of Arts degree from Broward Community College, Davie, Florida.

She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism at the College of Journalism and Communications, University of Florida.

To qualify for the internship, students must be in either fourth or fifth form and attend a TCI high school recognised by the Ministry of Education.

They are required to present a recommendation letter from their principal or guidance counsellor and the application process includes submission of essay outlining why they should be hired as an intern.

The SSEP recruits college students and provides an opportunity for them to apply theoretical knowledge to realworld situations under the supervision of FortisTCI professionals.

Students enrolled in the SSEP work with the company for a two month period.

College students must demonstrate a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and are required to submit an official transcript, attendance record and two letters of recommendation, as part of a competitive application process.

It is encounters like these that really energise me and more importantly give me hope for this island nation of ours - the youth of this country.

All I can say to them is keep reading. Widen your horizons, explore, discover and yes - enjoy the wonders of this world.

Back on Salt Cay, I turned a year older and to celebrate the event my seven-year-old daughter organised a karaoke jam session, which took place in the last venue currently open on Salt Cay, ‘The Chill Spot.’

While often a place where island men can go for a drink, have a banter and listen to music, on this occasion the sound system was augmented with an iPad and the songs chosen reflected the tastes and talents of a very mixed group of children and island folks, from most walks of life.

From the Salt Cay salt entrepreneur, the newly arrived fireman, the one police officer on the island, a fisherman and two very determined seven-year-olds, everyone joined in.

“Wow,” exclaimed our host (and non-singer on this occasion) Enrique Dickenson, “Salt Cay’s got talent!”

In the end, all agreed that most importantly Salt Cay had fun that evening!

After the trophy for best singer had been awarded to the island’s police officer, whose angelic voice certainly left me speechless, it was decided to make this a regular event.

The next day, in a moment of deja vu, my neighbour asked whether I was feel strong this morning?

A baby donkey, he said, had fallen into a well.

“Last week a cat, a few months ago a cow and now a donkey,” he continued.

Happily, unlike the recently injured cat, the baby donkey was successfully extracted from the well and reunited with its mother much to the delight of all bystanders.

As a relative newcomer to Salt Cay, I had no idea there were so many wells on the island, although when one looks at the history and considers how critical an issue water supply must have been in the days before reverse osmosis and electric power, it makes sense.

Today these wells have outlived their usefulness and can only be considered a hazard. So much so that several concerned Salt Cay citizens are now brainstorming how best to prevent animals (or god forbid children) from having a serious, potentially life threatening accidents.

Never a dull moment on ‘The Cay. And yet, when at the end of a long, hot day, one saunters down Victoria Street late in the evening, the cooling winds coming off the salinas, everything is suddenly put back in perspective.

As one Salt Cay native recently remarked, as we met on one such late evening walks: “You see Titus, the great thing here is, we have our own set of problems, but unlike most places in the world, they’re solvable and life goes on.”

Well said, I thought. And therein lies the magic of the ‘island that time forgot’.

Clinic exploration programme concludes with banquet

BY DAISY HANDFIELD A BANQUET was held at West Bay Club resort in Providenciales to conclude the six-week long annual clinic exploration programme hosted for students seeking careers in medicine.

The students that participated in the series of workshops, sponsors and medical officials were invited to celebrate the success of this year’s programme.

Coordinator Dr Jameiko Harvey brought opening remarks during the banquet and students who took part gave brief comments on their experiences.

Briann Gardiner said that she thoroughly enjoyed the programme and that it opened her eyes to many new things.

She said: “I loved it. I learnt so

much and we got a lot of hands-on interactions in the various workshops and I really enjoyed them because it taught me a lot about stuff that I did not know about and how they could help me in life every day.”

Another student Ahmarian Rigby said that the workshops have made her realise that she definitely wants to pursue a career in the medical field.

“Going into the medical field has always been my dream, so doing this has really opened more of a spectrum for me, as it pertains to what field I want to go in.

“I think that it has really helped me to look into what I have chosen to see if it was right for me,” she said.

Minister of Health Edwin Astwood said that he is encouraged by the success of the programme and said that the future looks bright

Programme is a collaborative effort between TCI InterHealth Canada and healthcare stakeholders in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Every year TCI InterHealth Canada selects a few high school students who are interested in careers in the medical field to participate in the four to six-week programme.

Avoid back pain while exercising Drugs used in dental care HIGH performance athletes treat exercising like a ritual, following a specific routine each time they hit the gym helping them avoid injuries.

Putting more stress on your body can lead to aches and pains, but if you follow a few simple steps you can make sure you’re not following up your gym routine with an ice pack!

WARM UP AND COOL DOWN It’s important to start and end your gym sessions with a warm up and cool down to increase (and respectively decrease) your heart rate, easing your body in and out of the physical activity.

Your warm up should consist of low intensity activity to increase your heart rate and blood circulation, such as a set of jumping-jacks.

While cooling down, it’s important to remember that this is when your muscles are the warmest and the most optimal time to deepen your stretches.

Stretching before and after a workout will increase the flexibility of your muscles and ligaments, reducing the possibility of injury.

PICK UP WEIGHTS CORRECTLY Before you attempt to perfect your bicep curls, it’s important to learn how to pick up weights correctly.

Picking up any heavy object incorrectly can lead to a back injury.

Avoid possible back pain by keeping your back flat and bending at the knees when picking up any kind of weight.

WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES This tip is for those who love cardio, as you could be running towards back pain if you’re not wearing the right shoes.

Make sure you pick a shoe with good shock absorption to reduce the impact running can have on your spine.

DON’T OVERDO IT Most importantly, it’s imperative to make sure you don’t overdo your work out to ensure you avoid back pain or injury.

If you’re recovering from an injury or new to the gym it’s important to remember to go at your own pace, and not try to keep up with others around you.

Working out has many benefits for your overall health. With these tips in mind, you’ll be better prepared to accomplish a successful and healthy workout session without injury.

– VOLUME TWO

IN THIS second piece looking at drugs used in dental care I will continue to look at the different drugs used both in the clinic and at home by the patient.

I will discuss the mode of action, the correct usage as well as the benefits and the potential risks.

ANAESTHETIC Local anaesthetic causes a reversible loss of sensation or numbing feeling and is administered by the dentist.

Anaesthetics are used for several different treatments including fillings, extractions, implant placement and when teeth are being prepared for crowns or bridges.

A topical anaesthetic may be used first with children or sensitive patients in the form of a gel that is applied to the gum and gives a mild numbing sensation.

When the site is mildly numb, the dentist will inject a stronger anaesthetic into the gum around the site where the work will be performed.

This might take several injections but usually after the first one or two the anaesthetic is already taking effect and you may not feel the further injections as much or at all.

Once the anaesthetic has taken full effect the dental procedure can be carried out painlessly.

It is not unusual for the anaesthetic to sometimes numb part of the tongue, lips and the skin around the

mouth.

This is not a problem and modern anaesthetics wear off fairly rapidly once the treatment has finished with no long-term effects.

Anaesthetics may contain adrenaline which is to keep the anaesthetic in place for longer. Tell your dentist if you have any heart or blood pressure issues as this may influence which local anaesthetic is used.

ANTI-BACTERIAL OR ANTISEPTIC MOUTH WASHES I generally recommend mouthwash for one of three reasons: breathfreshness, cavity prevention/ sensitivity and gum infection.

For breath-freshness it is really down to personal choice in terms of which product you prefer for taste and smell, as no specific medical content or action is required.

These can be bought over-the-counter from your pharmacist or grocery store with no need for a prescription.

It is also personal preference whether you rinse before or after brushing. I would recommend a hydrogen peroxide based mouthwash as the foaming action helps to lift food debris from around the teeth.

One ‘watch-out’, however, is to avoid mouthwash that is alcoholbased. These may give you the ‘burn’ that creates the feeling of cleaning the mouth but there is a recognised association between alcohol and

mouth cancer.

For cavity prevention/sensitivity I recommend a fluoride based mouth mouthwash which is again available over-the counter.

Regular rinsing with a daily fluoride rinse is effective at preventing early decay from progressing further.

Daily rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash has replaced the use of fluoride gels in a tray as it is far more effective to use a rinse on a daily basis than a fluoride treatment every six to 12 months.

For bacterial infection, there is a specific mouthwash which I prescribe called chlorhexidine. This should be used twice a day until the bottle is empty.

Although this mouthwash can be purchased over-the-counter from a pharmacy I do not recommend the repeated use with patients selfprescribing.

This is because chlorhexidine is very effective at killing bacteria and overuse can upset the balance of the natural, healthy organisms in the mouth.

This can result in oral thrush (a yeast infection) due to the over proliferation of Candida fungus which is found naturally the mouth.

Prolonged use also often results in a brown surface stain appearing on the teeth.

In the next and final article in this series I will continue to look at drugs used in dental care.

Former Bahamian PM concerned about arrests of ex ministers FORMER Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie is keeping a wary eye on the Hubert Minnis administration, following the arrests of three opposition parliamentarians in recent weeks.

Christie, who has made a point of distancing his Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) from corruption, admitted to the Nassau Guardian he was “deeply concerned”.

Two of his former Cabinet ministers – Shane Gibson, who was Labour Minister, and former Minister of the Environment Kenred Dorsett – have been slapped with multiple charges, including extortion, bribery and misconduct in public office.

Frank Smith, a former PLP MP and former head of the Public Hospitals Authority, was also arrested and granted bail on similar charges.

Christie, who stepped down as PLP leader after a bruising May election, said he hoped that the cases would be fairly handled.

“I am working on the assumption that justice will prevail at the end of the day and…everybody will be comfortable with that,” he said, declining to comment further.

Christie’s tone was far tamer than his successor, Philip Davis, who has warned that arrests will harm the country’s image on the international front.

Davis argued that while the development had, in fact, hurt the PLP, there was much more at stake for the Bahamas.

FORECASTERS are now predicting a higher likelihood of an abovenormal season, and they increased the predicted number of named storms and major hurricanes.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) updated its hurricane season outlook last week, saying this season has the potential to be extremely active, and could be the most active since 2010.

Forecasters now say there is a 60 per cent chance of an abovenormal season (compared to the May prediction of 45 per cent chance), with 14-19 named storms (increased from the May predicted range of 11-17) and 2-5 major hurricanes (increased from the May predicted range of 2-4). A prediction for 5-9 hurricanes remains unchanged from the initial May outlook.

“We’re now entering the peak of the season when the bulk of the storms usually form,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Centre. “The wind and air patterns in the area of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean where many

storms develop are very conducive to an above-normal season. This is in part because the chance of an El Nino forming, which tends to prevent storms from strengthening, has dropped significantly from May.” Bell noted other factors that point to an above-normal season include warmer waters across the tropical Atlantic than models previously predicted and higher predicted activity from available models.

In just the first 10 weeks of this season, there have been seven named storms, which is over half the number of storms during an average sixmonth season and double the number of storms that would typically form by early August. An average Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1-November 30, produces 12 named storms, of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. The updated outlook is based on the current and evolving atmospheric and oceanic conditions, the most recent model predictions, and pre-and early-season storm activity. The numbers announced last week include the season activity to-date.

Jamaican parliamentarian US Coast Guard transfers 151 dies suddenly

Haitian migrants to Bahamas The US Coast Guard Cutter Seneca crew transferred 151 Haitian migrants on Friday to the Royal Bahamian Defence Force.

The transfer is a combination of two separate interdiction cases in which Coast Guard aircrews and cutter crews located and rescued these migrants.

A Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew located an overloaded 40foot Haitian sail freighter Friday approximately 35 miles south of Ragged Island, Bahamas. The Coast Guard Cutter Seneca was diverted to the scene, and safely interdicted and embarked 78 migrants.

The Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber crew interdicted 73 migrants on an overloaded 50-foot Haitian sail freighter Wednesday 7 miles southwest of Great Inagua,

Bahamas with assistance by a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew deployed to Great Inagua.

“The Caribbean and Florida Straits are dangerous and unforgiving for migrants on illegal and ill-advised voyages in overloaded vessels with little or no safety gear needlessly placing lives at risk,” said Cmdr. Willie Carmichael, deputy chief of enforcement for the Coast Guard’s 7th District. “The Coast Guard and its partner agencies continue to maintain a strong presence along our maritime border and will continue to interdict and rescue those who embark on these illegal voyages in unsafe vessels such as these ones.”

Under the Comprehensive Maritime Agreement between the

governments of the United States and The Bahamas, all migrants regardless of nationality, country of origin or age, falling under Bahamian jurisdiction are transferred to the Bahamas where they are processed in accordance with Bahamian and international law. The majority will likely be repatriated to their country of origin.

Once aboard Coast Guard cutters, all migrants receive food, water, shelter and medical attention.

Approximately 1,791 Haitian migrants have attempted to illegally migrate to the US via the maritime environment since October 1 compared to 1,872 Haitian migrants in fiscal year 2016. These numbers represent the total number of atsea interdictions, landings and disruptions in the Florida Straits, the Caribbean and Atlantic.

JAMAICA’S opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is in shock over the death of one of its Parliamentarians on Monday morning.

Representative for St Mary South East, Dr Winston Green, died shortly after 5 a.m. after collapsing at his home.

The PNP issued a statement in which it said that Jamaica had lost “a great son”.

“Dr Green committed his life professionally and politically to serving the Jamaican people. He was a dedicated servant of the people and a man faithful to his commitment to his family, his profession, his constituents and his party,” PNP leader Dr Peter Phillips said.

Be wary of political opportunists, UWI lecturer tells Caribbean voters CARIBBEAN voters must stay clear of “political opportunists”, a leading University of the West Indies (UWI) political scientist has warned.

Dr Tennyson Joseph, who heads the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus, is concerned that while Caribbean citizens are looking for change because of the failure of traditional politicians, they could be setting themselves up for further disappointment.

It is clear that not any cook can govern,” he argued.

Kingston pastor arrested on sex charges involving minor THE Kingston pastor who was being sought by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) for allegedly repeatedly having sex with a 12-year-old girl before impregnating her, is now in jail.

Kenneth Blake, 52, pastor of the Harvest Temple Apostolic Church, located on Slipe Pen Road, was this morning arrested and charged with rape, forcible abduction, grievous sexual assault, sexual touching and sexual intercourse with a person under 16 years old.

Blake was charged after he surrendered to investigators at CISOCA. He was accompanied by his attorney and members of his congregation, law enforcement sources revealed.

The pastor is scheduled to appear before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on August 22.

The Gleaner reported last week that the now 14-year-old victim has given investigators a detailed statement in which she alleged that Blake initially forced himself on to her before he began

to reward her after their sexual encounters.

“He would give her money and other gifts so that she would not tell anyone,” one source revealed.

However, according to the source, the alleged sexual relationship came to light in June this year when the 14-year-old discovered that she was pregnant and confessed everything to her mother.

According to law-enforcement sources, the pastor is engaged to the mother of the 14-year-old girl.

One source said the child reported that she would often visit the clergyman’s St Andrew home to look for her older sister, who was sent to live with the pastor “due to the lack of convenience at her mother’s home”.

She reported that during one of those visits in 2015, the pastor sent her older sister to downtown Kingston before having sexual intercourse with her against her will.

Turnquest: We can turn Bank of the Bahamas around

BAHAMAS Finance Minister K Peter Turnquest said this week that the Minnis administration has the best opportunity to restore value to Bank of The Bahamas, telling Tribune242 that the government would not have injected $166m into the struggling bank if it did not believe it could turn it around.

“I think that we have the best opportunity certainly to restore value to the bank. I am very confident in the board that we have. They will have the full support of the government and we believe that we will be able to turn it around. We wouldn’t be investing $166m if I didn’t believe that there is an opportunity for the Bank for The Bahamas. At the end of the day, we believe in the professionalism and the ability of Bahamians,” Mr Turnquest told Tribune Business yesterday.

The latest rescue will remove

some $166m worth of “toxic” commercial loans from BOB’s balance sheet and transfer them to the Bahamas Resolve special purpose vehicle (SPV). The loans, which are to be paid for at gross book value, will be exchanged for promissory notes (government IOUs or bonds) that will be provided by Bahamas Resolve. This will fill the hole left on BOB’s balance sheet by the removal of the impaired loans.

“We are going to give them every opportunity to be successful. It is unfortunate that the bank got to this point but as we give the bank the opportunity to solve its issues, we will also diligently pursue those loans that we taken on to the Resolve Corporation to ensure that the Bahamian people are able to recover as much of those delinquent loans as possible. At the end of the day, this is a tremendous

investment for the Bahamian people and we must return shareholder value to them,” Mr Turnquest added.

Bahamas Resolve is the special purpose vehicle (SPV) created in October 2014 to facilitate the rescue of Bank of the Bahamas. The “bail out” saw a collective $45.2m in “bad loans”, belonging to 13 delinquent borrowers, transferred from the BISX-listed institution to Bahamas Resolve, with the subsequent ‘hole’ in the bank’s balance sheet plugged by $100m worth of government bonds.

The interest payments due to Bank of the Bahamas on those bonds were supposed to be serviced by the proceeds from Bahamas Resolve’s sale/liquidation of “distressed assets” securing those loans - mainly highend and apartment-style residential properties, together with some business premises.

Bush presidents wade into Trump furore over Charlottesville FORMER Presidents George HW Bush and George W Bush have called on the US to “reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism and hatred in all forms”.

They are the latest Republican figures to weigh in on the backlash to Donald Trump’s latest remarks blaming “both sides” for violent clashes in Virginia.

It culminated with a woman’s death and nearly 20 wounded when a car ploughed into a crowd at the farright rally.

On Wednesday, Mr Trump disbanded his jobs councils amid an exodus of CEOs. Representatives from companies like Merck, Under Armour, and Intel had quit the group over Mr Trump’s reaction to the events in Charlottesville.

Republican elected officials around the country expressed outrage when Mr Trump appeared to defend the organisers.

“As we pray for Charlottesville, we are reminded of the fundamental truths recorded by that city’s most prominent citizen in the Declaration of Independence: we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights,” a statement from the two former presidents said.

“We know these truths to be everlasting because we have seen the decency and greatness of our country.”

The violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday have sparked a heated debate on US race relations.

He condemned the driver of the car, but said those who had marched in defence of the statue had included “many fine people”.

His comments were said to have caught senior White House officials off guard.

Following the news conference, the White House sent a set official talking points to Republican congressmen, urging them to say Mr Trump was “entirely correct” in his latest remarks on Charlottesville.

“Despite the criticism, the President reaffirmed some of our most important Founding principles: We are equal in the eyes of our Creator, equal under the law, and equal under our Constitution,” a bullet point read.

Mr Trump’s remarks were welcomed by David Duke, a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan, who tweeted: “Thank you President Trump for your honesty & courage to tell the truth about #Charlottesville & condemn the leftist terrorists in BLM/Antifa.”

But many others strongly condemned the comments.

South Korea’s Moon pledges there will be ‘no war on Korean peninsula’ SOUTH Korean President Moon Jae-in has said US and South Korean policies are aligned on North Korea and promised there “will be no war on the Korean peninsula ever again.”

Moon, who took office in May, held a news conference Thursday to mark the first 100 days of his presidency.

During the nationally broadcast event, he said US President Donald Trump had assured South Korea he would consult with them before making any military decisions on North Korea.

“Against North Korea, even with extreme pressure, it has to be solved peacefully and our opinion and US opinion about this matter is not different,” Moon said.

The South Korean leader also said North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons technology was “nearing” a red line, which he described as “completing an ICBM and weaponizing it with a nuclear head.”

New satellite photos show objects on water near potential MH370 crash site Michael Keenan says he relinquished dual citizenship in 2004.

Australian justice minister denies UK citizenship AUSTRALIAN Justice Minister Michael Keenan has denied he is a British dual citizen, after becoming the latest figure caught up in a political saga.

Australian MPs and senators are not allowed to hold dual citizenship.

Five other Australian politicians are due to have their eligibility for office tested in court over claims they are dual citizens.

Mr Keenan said he renounced his British citizenship in 2004 before entering parliament.

“I am an Australian citizen and I do not hold citizenship of any other country,” he tweeted.

Fairfax Media reported it took Mr Keenan two days to confirm he had renounced his citizenship.

Mr Keenan accused the outlet of a “cheap grab for a headline”.

He did not release documents showing his citizenship renunciation.

However, Immigration Minister

Peter Dutton said Mr Keenan had “dealt with that matter” through his statements.

Mr Keenan was born in Australia but inherited British citizenship from his Durham-born father.

He is the third government minister to be swept up in the saga, after Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan.

Like Mr Joyce, Mr Keenan sits in the lower House of Representatives, where Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s government has only a one-seat majority.

Man-of-the-match Damian St. Ange slammed a 23-ball 50 to lead the Tigers to a convincing eight-wicket win over the Super Kings.

AN aggressive half-century from Damian St. Ange and a hat-trick from Dane Ritchie propelled the Mitsubishi Electric Tigers to a convincing eight-wicket win over the Quality Super Kings when action in the TCICA Summer T20 Cricket Competition continued at the Downtown Ball Park last Sunday.

The Super Kings won the toss and opted to bat first, but they lost wickets at regular intervals, and if Chabbie Charlery did not play a dogged innings, they might have folded within the first 10 overs. Charlery, who has been in great form, slammed eight fours and a six in 39 balls for a match high 57 runs.

Some support came from Andy Kuthalingam, who scored 23 from 20 balls (three fours) batting at number eight.

Medium pacer Dane Ritchie was however having none of it and he returned in his second spell to end the innings

prematurely.

The eventful 17th over started with a dot ball, before Charlery hit the second for a six over mid-wicket. St. Ange then caught Charlery at third man to start Ritchie’s hattrick. Robert Johnson became the second victim after he was caught brilliantly by a running Paul McKenzie at cover before Fredeline Belen was bowled first ball.

Needing just 123 for victory, the Tigers started slow with both openers: Ritchie (12 runs from 13 balls) and McKenzie (16 runs from 17 balls) watchful.

Number three batsman Jittu Gaglani (24 not out) also played it cool. He scored nine singles before hitting a boundary. At the other end, St. Ange was however ultraaggressive with a four from his first ball. He scored a total of nine fours and a six to register an even 50 off 23 balls. That aggression handed the Tigers victory in 12.4 overs.

Dane Ritchie led the Tigers’ bowling attack with four wickets, including a hat-trick.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Lack of fitness sidelined Williams from British 4X400M team

Delano Williams was sidelined from the British 4X400M team that won a bronze medal in the just concluded 2017 World Championships.

BRITISH Athletics felt that Delano Williams was not fully fit to run the second leg for its 4X400M team hence the reason to replace him at the World Championships last week.

Williams had suffered a slight hamstring injury in July, but felt he had fully recovered.

“I felt fit enough, but the people (management) said that I was not convincing in training, so that’s why they never made me run,” the 23-year-old told the Weekly News.

The exclusion of Williams, who was a mainstay in the British side, having helped the 4X400M

team to bronze at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing and the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam, deeply disappointed the Grand Turk born athlete.

“They told me the morning (of the heats); they had a meeting at 11:30h; it was a huge disappointment to me. It is one of my worst years thus far.”

To make matters worse, the former Munro College student said that the incident was just one of many things currently happening in his life.

“To be honest there’s a lot of stuff happening in my life right

now in terms of financial support and coaching. Everyone thinks that I have it together and expects so much of me, but no one really knows my struggles except for my close friends and family really and I will leave it at that. Sometimes in life you put all your trust in someone and in the end you are disappointed.”

For the superstar athlete, his back might be against the wall now and he might be down, but definitely not out.

“Things will change and I will rise again.”

Booke Rivers finishes second at USKIDS Junior Golf World Championship BROOKE Rivers who defended her U14 age division title at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Championships last month, finished second in the Girls’ 12-and-under division of the USKIDS Junior Golf World Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina earlier this month—this time though she represented Canada instead of the TCI. The 12-year-old naturalised citizen of TCI, lost the winning trophy by a single shot over three rounds of golf.

She finished with six under par after scores of 69, 72 and 69.

Rivers then captained the International team against the USA in the World Van Horn Cup (a oneday best ball tournament featuring the top 12-year-old golfers). Team USA however won that competition 5-3.

Younger brother Kurt Rivers (10), finished tied for 31st with a three over par score (70, 73, 76) in the Boys’ 10-year-old division.

2017 winners the Blizzards dominated the tournament.

Siblings Brooke and Kurt Rivers were outstanding at the World Championship.

The Flyers finished as runners up this year.

THIRD ANNUAL MALLORY MCCOMISH SUMMER BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:

Dominant Blizzards win title THE Blizzards stamped their authority on the third annual Mallory McComish Summer 20-and-under Summer Basketball Tournament with an unbeaten run that claimed the title.

The eight-team, three-day, tournament at the Lower Bight Court culminated on Sunday night

with a 44-34 win over defending champions the Flyers. Shooting guard Jaden Lois was adjudged the finals MVP after leading the winners with 18 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Blizzards’ captain Will Elliot copped the tournament MVP award for his overall performance.

The tournament started last Friday with the Blizzards beating the Bight Island Hoppers 43-32. The Sonics then won by default over the Splash Kings, before the Eagles soared over the Knights 53-24.

In the feature clash the Flyers defeated the Grand Turk Ballers 3227.

The Flyers recorded their second victory when day two action tipped off on Saturday evening. The win against Eagles was by three points 36-33. The Blizzards also registered win number two after a 39-25 win over the Sonics. In game three, the Ballers eliminated the Knights 3937, while the Eagles eliminated an

inexperienced Bight team 49-42.

In the feature clash the Ballers made a strong statement when they trounced the Sonics 32-19 to boot them out.

On Sunday night the two unbeaten sides: the Flyers and the Blizzards went head-to-head, but the latter emerged victorious 43-36 to advance to the final.

The Eagles then eliminated the Ballers 38-26 before they lost to the Flyers 31-26 in the semi-final, which set up the exciting end to the tournament.
