Government flip flopped on permit fees - Robinson BY OLIVIA ROSE CHAIRMAN of the Opposition Royal Robinson this week condemned the Government for hiking up the residency permit fees some 30 percent. Robinson, who is also the Opposition’s appointed member in the House of Assembly, said on Wednesday (April 12) that Premier Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson in a total about face, has substantially increased her revenue intake. He added that the move by the Government reeks hypocrisy since the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) while in opposition relentlessly criticised former Premier Rufus Ewing’s administration for allegedly collecting work permit fees to bolster its revenue numbers. Robinson in a release this week said: “Look at the Budget Booklet at page 3.139 and you would see the figure increase from $17,097,084 under Dr Ewing to $18,452,154 under this Premier and Minister of Finance or an increase of eight percent. “The Residency Permit fees have been increased from $1,768,294 to $2,300,056 or an increase of 30 percent seen in Budget Booklet at page 3.140.” Robinson accused the Premier of trying to hoodwink the public.
He said: “She cannot hide from this, as she is both the Minister of Finance and the Leader of Government business in the House of Assembly. “So really and truly, the buck stops at her desk! She cannot hide behind the coattails of the CFO, because before she finalised her budget, she knew that she was not going to contend with that twoheaded monster.” In his release the Progressive National Party’s (PNP) Chairman also lashed out at the Deputy Premier and Minister of Immigration Sean Astwood. “On the back of all of this, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Immigration is all too, in his own words, ‘eager to set up the committee to deal with the issuance of TCI status’.” Robinson in his strongly worded statement said it’s clear that the ‘change government’ is selling out the Turks and Caicos Islands to the highest bidders. The chairman taking a swing at the Premier’s recent comments about the budget not needing the UK’s approval said: “The Premier continues to play games and use semantics when she talks about not having to get approval from the UK for this upcoming budget. “The real reasons are these, and

left by Dr Ewing. “So for the foreseeable future, project dollars are Dr Ewing’s and this Premier would manipulate the things on which they are spent, but no new project money would be allocated.”
Robinson called on the Premier to tell the people the naked truth about the dollars and cents that underpin her budget. Efforts to contact the Premier and Minister of Immigration for a comment proved futile.
Five Cays father gunned down BY DELANA ISLES INVESTIGATIONS have been launched into the fatal shooting of Delano Ferguson also known as ‘Big Red’ on Friday evening (April 7) in Five Cays. During the same incident in which the 33-year-old father was shot and killed, another man, 38-year-old Godeano Missick of Grand Turk, also suffered gunshot injuries. Police reported that sometime after 9pm on the night in question, a 911 operator received a call stating that gunshots were heard in the area of Granny Hill and that someone was shot. Upon arrival at the scene of the crime, Ferguson was found lying on the ground unresponsive. He was subsequently transported to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre by emergency services, where he was pronounced dead at 10.28pm by a doctor after efforts to revive him failed. Missick was later transported to the hospital where it was determined that he had also suffered a gunshot wound. Upon to press time police reported that no arrests have been made in connection with the murder and shooting. However, reports reaching this publication have indicated that the two men were in a grocery store in the area when they were confronted by two men dressed in dark clothing, bullet proof vests, their faces hidden by masks and brandishing weapons. Reports are that the men were ordered to “freeze” and “put your

hands up”. The two victims reportedly complied, but mere seconds later gunshots rang out and the two men were shot, one fatally so. Missick, who this publication learned had gotten married that same day, was shot in his leg. On Monday, police sent out a stern warning to members of the public not to be too hasty believing conclusions that were drawn about the incident and which were circulating via several Whatsapp voice notes. Police said that they are aware of the “misinformation” being spread and have assured the public and
the families of the victims that a methodical investigation is being carried out to identify and charge those responsible for the crime. “We also ask that you as a community not to jump to any conclusions and allow the police to do their job.” They are further appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information that can assist with the investigation to contact the Chalk Sound Police Station on 338-5901 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1-800 8477 or www. crimestoppers.tc

PDM set to roll out $2.1m Blue Hills master plan BY DELANA ISLES THE LONG touted plan to completely overhaul the Blue Hills community will see major works being carried under the current administration in this financial year. That is the promise of Goldray Ewing, elected member for that constituency, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Planning. Ewing made the disclosure during a press conference to commemorate the PDM Government’s 100 days in office on April 4. He told the press that the once the 2017-2018 budget is passed, the Government will be making some crucial decisions about what Blue Hills will look like in the near future. Ewing and other members of his party campaigned on the restructure project of the community during the 2016 elections campaign, and now appear poised to bring the long awaited project to fruition. “This master plan will redesign, structurally and correctly, and reposition this settlement to be rezoned for a proper organised development. “This was budgeted for in the 2017/2018 Budget.
Minister of Infrastructure Housing and Planning, Goldray Ewing
The master plan and boardwalk project was initially budgeted some $2.1 million last year under the PNP Government.
“The Government is considering this project to be a pilot project so that other communities could follow suit in order to get the shanty towns within our communities up to speed.” The master plan and boardwalk project was initially budgeted some $2.1 million last year under the PNP Government. The plan the PDM campaigned on entails: -A rezoning of Blue Hills to
accommodate hotels and commercial developments, the development of three connecting roads joining Millennium Highway with Blue Hills Bay Road. -The development of an alternative road from Millennium Highway into Downtown or Airport Road. -Beautification of Blue Hills Bay Road with board walk on the beach side, street lights and patriotic
flags supports for both Millennium Highway and the Front Bay Road. -Development of sport programmes and sporting facilities for the youth of Blue Hills -The relocation of Fortis TCI power lines and poles from the beach side of the road to the other side of the road. -The development of a farmer corporation and Blue Hills community back yard farming with a special selective crop produce.
This will include soil, fertilizer and technical assistance being provided. -Cleaning of Blue Hills beach on a monthly basis of dead dry sea weed, trash and debris (using contracting services with the correct type of equipment). -And the improvement of infrastructure such as extension of the primary healthcare services, clinic and schools in the Blue Hills community.
Flooding in TCI to be addressed comprehensively - Minister Goldray BY OLIVIA ROSE THE GOVERNMENT is in the process of crafting a comprehensive flood mitigation plan to quickly alleviate flood waters during the rainy season. Minister of Infrastructure Housing and Planning, Goldray Ewing at a press conference on Tuesday, April 4, revealed that the plan will target low lying flood prone areas. He said: “A comprehensive drainage plan is finally being established to address excess flooding during the rainy season.
“This comprehensive drainage system will be implemented gradually in phases as monies and funding becomes available.” The infrastructure minister stressed the importance of the drainage plan since residents of flood prone areas have bemoaned the lack of proper drainage for years. Deputy Premier Sean Astwood during an interview with the Weekly News last year decried the previous administration’s lack of action as it relates to the drainage issue facing the Turks and Caicos Islands. At that time Astwood said:
“Government must take a serious look and get proper engineers to address the drainage issues the country at large.” He pointed out that residents of Five Cays and other flood prone areas are constantly subjected to prolonged flooding due to lack of proper drainage and irrigation systems. “Drainage is a problem throughout this country and I think it’s too long now, and the Government must do something about it now.” He asserted that an ample study be conducted to ascertain the flaws in the drainage network efforts must

be made quickly to find a solution to this problem. “They really need to invest the money behind it, otherwise we will continue to experience what we’ve been experiencing so far and that’s unacceptable.”
Astwood underscored that residents also have a major role to play in keeping their communities clean and drains litter-free. The Turks and Caicos Islands frequently experiences intermittent rainfall and localised flooding.

Education curriculum reform underway BY OLIVIA ROSE A WORKING committee has been established to improve the current education curriculum, which will pave the way for a more learnerfriendly environment in schools across the nation. Education minister Josephine Connolly made this disclosure on Tuesday, April 4, during her 100 days report which sought to update the public on strides made by the new Government during its first 100 days in office. According to Connolly the education curriculum reform is in keeping with the Government’s change document which focuses on the holistic development of the child. Coupled with this the education minister noted that during the first 100 days she embarked on a familiarisation tour in an effort to listen to the challenges facing the various departments under her purview. “We got to hear first-hand some of the concerns and challenges, teachers, students and parents are facing. “The aim is to ensure critical resources are placed according to needs, it is true that some of our schools are overcrowded and some are in need of critical upgrades, and there is a need for resources and to make schools ready for new programmes. “That is why I fought to ensure additional resources for the upcoming fiscal year in this area that is why we moved swiftly to engage with the CDB at an early stage to determine how we could form and strengthen our partnership in education.” To this end she pointed out that Premier Sharlene CartwrightRobinson recently signed the European Development Fund (EDF 11) in Aruba Under this programme, the TCI is set to receive an additional €14.6 million which is slated for improvements in the education sector, particularly in the area of vocational training. She said: “Our change document highlighted the modernisation of schools, curriculum and education system and the curriculum is key to that objective. “With that in mind, during the first 100 days I established the Curriculum Development Working Committee. “This working committee was formed to accelerate the curriculum review and give important feedback to ensure that the new way of teaching and learning is current, relevant and meets the needs of all learners. “I also commissioned a forum that will ensure participation by key stakeholders. The forum is available

at www.gov.tc/forum” According to the minister the working committee is comprised of various stakeholders with an interest of curriculum development; the acceleration of the review will introduce a pilot programme for performing arts as well. EDUCATION FOR ALL Premier Sharlene CartwrightRobinson last month (March 5) during the launching of Education Week said the traditional method of teaching is a disservice to tech-savvy students and thus her Government is working assiduously to revamp the curriculum. In this vein she said that in order to solve the technology shortfalls in classrooms, teaching methods must be tailored to the dynamic milieu. The technology currently available in schools across the Turks and Caicos Islands is woefully inadequate for the task of preparing students for the 21st century workforce. The new curriculum, when introduced, will bridge this gap enabling smooth post-secondary transition, and ensuring future economic development. The premier in calling for the modernisation of teaching tools said: “Success for every learner means that we must be inclusive. “Yes, it also means that some people work better with their hands but it also means that our teaching methods must be adapted to the changing environment.” She pointed out: “We are living in an age of technology and it should pain all of us who allow our children to sit at home on iPads and tablets and then send them to school only to learn only from chalk board and chalk. “We are doing these techy babies in this technical generation
a disservice. We must upgrade the tools with which we give our teachers to teach.” The Government envisages the bringing together of administrators, educators, parents and community members. The state-wide school modernisation initiative will define the root cause, identify new sources of funding, and develop transparent implementation systems. The Premier said: “Our Government’s focus on adult training and lifelong learning will set us on an important path. “We must change the historical focus of concentrating on school age children in the primary and secondary school. “We must give the ministry a wider mandate and encourage through strategy the realisation that every citizen can be a learner and truthfully much more must become learners. “So if we talk of success for every learner, we must be more inclusive and more far-reaching in our efforts.” Premier Cartwright-Robinson recognised the need to create comprehensive strategy to achieve the goal, “success for every learner”. “We must acknowledge and realise the fact that people learn differently. “We must meet each learner where they are - be it the special need student, the school age or adult learner or the student who learns better with his hands. “In fact I wish that I could create a law that stops the use of the phrase ‘not academically inclined’. “I personally detest this phrase. Some people just learn differently and we must pull out of them the skills and gift that God has given them.” She underscored the importance of vocational training in this regard.
LAST Monday Premier Sharlene CartwrightRobinson rolled out her budget containing the estimates of revenue and expenditure for 2017/2018. Hailing it the “dawn of a new year,” she boasted that the budget had met all the sustainability requirements of the United Kingdom and the Turks and Caicos Islands. What are your thoughts on the budget?
Never ceases to amaze
As they say, sounds awesome. Well, wait and see, proof of the pudding and all that. Let’s hope so. Not to doubt the Premier, but requirements of the United Kingdom can be worrying. That usually means the requirements of the EU and OECD, which in turn means trouble for us. It never ceases to amaze how Government officials here swallow hook line and sinker every bit of garbage they deem fit for here, with almost biblical devotion and without question. Do they really read all the rules and regulations which are foisted and rubber stamped on us here and which have financial implications for our economy, sometimes ruinous? Doubt it. Nothing quite like being run by another country is there! Or is there?
Too early to say
Did not listen to the full budget debate, so cannot comment meaningfully. But just to say that is not her administration’s full budget as they met things there already. We have to wait for the 2017-18 budget to make an assessment of this administration running of the TCI.
Not the best choice
A lost set of self-conceited lucky riders who by default of the TCI having no better choices of representation have now taken misinformation to a lower level. Christians caring for mothers and children by making them homeless, 100 percent service charge to voters because it sounds good to say, not touching service charge with a jack-hammer because it sounds better to, and now claiming credit for a UK control-free budget, when it was the PNP who made us suffer to make the PDM look good. Now they do not even have the manners and gratitude to say thanks to the PNP. That is what we get when we select not the best.
On its way
The budget definitely has a lot of sound plans for the development of this country, the PDM is on the right track.

Brexit still a pressing concern for TCI, says Premier BY OLIVIA ROSE BREXIT is still an urgent concern for the Turks and Caicos Islands since the country is a beneficiary of European Union (EU) funding. On June 23, 2016, the people of Britain voted for a British exit, or Brexit, from the European Union in a historic referendum. The announcement prompted jubilant celebrations among Eurosceptics around Europe and sent shockwaves through the global economy. Although it will take Britain at least two years to leave the EU, the shift has already changed the financial dynamics of the entire world. It has since resulted in the slowing down of commerce in the UK and brought the British pound down to its lowest in history last year, not to mention the escalation of the
volatility of the financial markets. Premier Sharlene CartwrightRobinson in a press statement issued on Wednesday (April 12) said that the Turks and Caicos Islands and all other overseas territories will undoubtedly be affected by the decision. She said: “Late last week I received a joint official communiqué on the critical matter of Brexit from Mr Robin Walker, MP and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union and the Rt Hon Baroness Anelay, Minister of State for the Overseas Territories. “The country would recall that I travelled to the UK for a meeting on February 7, 2017, that was attended by overseas territories leaders and representatives from all inhabited territories of HM Government of Gibraltar participating as observers. “The UK OTs also used this opportunity to meet in its separate
Man arrested for threatening another with imitation gun A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an imitation firearm which he had used to threaten an older man. Last week, Police arrested the younger man in connection with the April 7 incident in which the
suspect is alleged to have pointed a suspected revolver at a 41 year old man, firing a number of shots at the victim. No one was injured during the incident. Investigations into the incident continue.
Policeman charged in 2016 Sunny Foods robbery A FOURTH man, this one a 30-year-old officer of the law, has been arrested and charged before the court with conspiracy to commit robbery. The charge stemmed from the April 10 robbery and shooting incident at the popular Five Cays supermarket. On Tuesday (April 11) the policeman appeared in the Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plea to the charge. He was granted bail and has to appear in the Supreme Court on July 7 for his sufficiency hearing. Police revealed that before the charge was laid, the cop had already been on suspension since last year. Three other men who were involved in the robbery were last month convicted of conspiracy to rob and sentenced to ten and 11 years in Her Majesty’s Prison. Those now convicted are 33-year-old Reginald Presil,
32-year-old Fritzer Prevalus, and Wilbert Almonor. The case against the convicted men and the newly charged policeman stemmed from an armed robbery and shooting of a local security official and ex-superintendent of police Albion Williams outside of the Five Cays store. Witness accounts of the brazen daylight robbery stated that the assailants were waiting for Williams – who is also the owner of Tag Security Services – to exit the store with the bag of money he normally collects from that location. When he came out of the supermarket the men allegedly knocked him to the ground, grabbed the bag of money, fired three shots into Williams’ back and made good their escape. Police officers have never recovered the stolen money. Police did not provide the name of the charged officer.

She revealed that the UK government has since triggered Article 50 to begin the process for the UK to leave the EU. She continued: “The Turks and Caicos as a beneficiary of EU funding continue to have this as an immediate concern and to a lesser extent the freedom of movement. “The UK had then and as recent as last week, has again committed to a dialogue with its OTs and it is proposed that this dialogue be managed through expert-level, sector specific roundtable meetings. “The UK has set dates for the sector specific roundtables and Tracy Knight of the Premier’s London Office will attend on TCIG’s behalf.” In addition to the technical round tables, the FCO will continue to hold discussions with OT representatives on wider policy issues and interests linked to EU exit, including OT priorities and options for their future relationship with the EU. that affect them. “To develop further the technical papers produced on key issues in advance of the next meeting of the Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) and to feed into development of UK policy and its evolution during the EU negotiation.” The Premier emphasised that this is an important issue and her Government will continue to update the people as it develops.

National Trust launches ‘Saving the Iguana Islands’ project BY OLIVIA ROSE IN AN effort to prevent the rock iguana and other native reptile species from becoming extinct the National Trust on Friday, April 7, launched the ‘Saving the Iguana Islands’ project. The National Trust, the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), San Diego Global Zoo and Department of Agriculture have worked diligently over the years to conserve the endemic rock iguana with an aim of securing a future for the unique and highly threatened species. The rock iguana is iconic for the Turks and Caicos Islands and serves as a major attraction for both locals and visitors alike. According to a press release the project has received tremendous support from the Darwin Plus initiative in the form of £200,000 with £170,000 matched funding by RSPB and San Diego Zoo Global for a three year period. “The organisations will collectively work to improve and control alien invasive species on Little Water Cay, particularly rodents and feral cats which are a threat to the iguana populations,” the release stated. “Biosecurity for Little Water Cay and Big Ambergris Cay will also be designed to ensure that these invasive species and other potential harmful species do not

become established and threaten the iguanas and other native reptiles.” Minister of Tourism Ralph Higgs, who attended the launch of the project, pledged his Government’s continued support for projects of this nature. He emphasised the importance of preserving the country’s biodiversity and also indicated his desire to see the National Trust and
Darwin Initiative collaborate on future projects. He said: “My love, respect and admiration for the work and successes of the National Trust is well known and documented. “The Darwin Initiative has the experience to make the rock iguana project in TCI a resounding success.” The Darwin Initiative funds projects that help countries rich in biodiversity to meet their objectives.
Projects typically address threats to biodiversity such as overexploitation, invasive species, habitat degradation and loss, climate change mitigation and adaptation and pollution. At one time these iguanas were depleted by introduced predators, mainly cats and dogs. Their habitat was degraded by overgrazing and trampling of vegetation which reduces the
availability of food for the iguanas. They have been wiped out of some islands and cling on precariously in others. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated them as critically endangered. Various conservation efforts are being undertaken and some iguanas have been relocated to uninhabited islets in an effort to prevent them from becoming wiped out.
Daily public vehicle inspections set for April – Home affairs minister announces several new initiatives BY DELANA ISLES AT ITS 100 day mark, the PDM Government, through its minister of home affairs announced several new initiatives that will be put in place for the departments and statutory bodies that fall under that portfolio. Minister of Home Affairs Vaden Williams informed the press on April 4 of those plans and projects that have been budgeted for the new financial year. Chief among those projects is the revamping of the Road Safety Department, Prison Service and a newly constructed Post Office for Providenciales.
ROAD SAFETY The minister said that his ministry has begun a comprehensive review of the Road Safety Department and of the Public Transportation Authority to oversee personal cabs and bus services for residents. He said that they will also begin a daily inspection of vehicles traversing the roadways during the month of April. He also revealed that Cabinet has approved one decal for all commercial, private and rental vehicles in the Turks and Caicos Islands, with the categories stated on the bottom of the sign. “My ministry also has plans on changing the licence plates. We have budgeted this year for licence plate
machine. “We believe that this will eliminate the problem in identifying who is a tourist and who is not a tourist, so we will have one licence plate on all vehicles.” PRISON According to the minister his ministry is working on a partnership between several private sector entities and the prison to offer prisoners a ‘chance for change’ programme. The programme, he said, will be geared towards giving parolees the chance at a job in private sector companies in an effort to facilitate their re-entry into society. “We are also exploring the possibility of extending the farm at the prison, so we can supply Grand Turk and the island of Salt Cay with various food items,” Williams proposed. The prison is also slated to see an additional ten officers being
installed there, thanks to a budgetary allocation in this financial year. POST OFFICE The minister further revealed that his ministry has tendered for a new building for the Providenciales post office, the contract for which has already been awarded. Williams promised that the new Post Office will soon be constructed, while renovations will be carried out on the Front Street Post Office building in Grand Turk. FIRE DEPARTMENT This year the Providenciales Fire Department has been promised a brand new home, already tendered and awarded, according to the minister. There will also be an increase in manpower of two more officers. DISASTER DEPARTMENT The Department for Disaster
Management will finally receive a command centre, Williams said. He stated that the department will also receive two vehicles in this year’s budget to help in their monitoring efforts during the flooding seasons. CENTRAL PURCHASING UNIT He stated that a new director will be appointed to the central purchasing unit during this year, so as to enhance the department’s purchasing ability on the part of the Government. Meanwhile, the minister also revealed that two half way houses will be established, one in Providenciales and the other in Grand Turk. These two locations will assist the gender department in its work with domestic violence victims. Williams said that the houses have already been tendered, and the contract awarded.

Gun-toting bandits rob tourist of valuables, rental car DETECTIVES are currently carrying out investigations into a robbery that occurred on Saturday, April 8, in which a 41 year old tourist was relieved of several personal items and a rental vehicle. Reports are that the man was confronted by three armed men in the Lower Bight area of Providenciales. Police said that around 12:49pm, 911 operators received a report of a robbery and immediately dispatched officers to a Resort located on Stubbs Road where the victim was met. He told officers that after dropping
his family off to a beach near the resort he went to park his vehicle in the parking lot and whilst there, he was approached by three males all dressed in black clothing. They pointed a black and grey handgun and a rifle at him before taking away his sunglasses, cellular phone and the 2007 Blue Suzuki Swift rental car licence plate number TC7599. The vehicle was later recovered at the Princess Alexandria Beach access on the Lower Bight. Investigations are ongoing.

Career Expo to be hosted this May BY DELANA ISLES THE FIRST ever national career recruitment drive is slated for May this year, with a special focus on getting young people into jobs. The initiative, which is one of the top five priorities of the Ministry of Border Control and Employment, was brought up again by subject minister and Deputy Premier Sean Astwood during a recent Government press briefing. “We had promised to immediately conduct a nationwide unemployment drive, and to fulfil this promise which is part of our 100 day commitment. “I am happy to report to this country and to the people of the Turks and Caicos that the National Career Recruitment Expo, first annual, will take place early in the month of May.” Astwood was quick to point out that the event would be much different from the typical job fair that has been done in the past, as it is intended to do a lot more. “We are including elements of job readiness workshop to make sure that persons come in early, sign up and get trained. “This puts them in a better position to land a job once an interview is secured for them.” The minister noted that this aspect of the exercise is very important,
Minister of Border Control and Employment, and Deputy Premier Sean Astwood
as his Government is aware that a number of people seeking jobs tend to show up to interviews unprepared (inappropriately dressed, with their resumes not properly structured among other things). He added that the idea of the workshop is to put locals in the very best position to ensure that they are successful. He further explained that about six days after the workshop, the job fair element of the national career expo will take place. “We have already begun to partner with business groups like the Hotel and Tourism Association. “We are engaging the Chamber of Commerce as well and we have
already begun talking with individual companies about partnering with the Government in the Employment Services Department to be a part of that project.” The Deputy Premier also revealed that students from the TCI Community College will be part of the project as well as high school students who are graduating in June this year. He was also happy to report that every company his ministry has approached to be a part of the project has been enthusiastic about participating. American astronaut Gordon Cooper began creating a treasure map from space
Discovery Channel to feature TCI – Much excitement as our waters are explored and history decoded BY KANDI HARIRAJ FABULOUS footage and anticipated discoveries from the exquisite Turks and Caicos Islands will be featured in a new Discovery Channel documentary series ‘Cooper’s Treasure’ set to premiere on April 18. It is expected that the island destination will benefit significantly from the publicity as Discovery’s network reaches more than 220 countries and territories, and 100 million homes.
Minister of Tourism, Ralph Higgs said that the series will give “tremendous exposure to the Turks and Caicos Islands, which is becoming an increasingly popular destination, not only to tourists, but for photo shoots, videos and movies”. The documentary, in which the island paradise is predicted to make notable geographic appearances, follows historical shipwreck recovery specialist, Darrell Miklos, as he endeavours to decode a treasure
map from his mentor, idol and friend, NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper. Cooper, considered one of NASA’s space pioneers, holds the record for the longest solo space flight in US history. During one of his key missions orbiting the earth to look for nuclear threats in the 1960s, Cooper detected small anomalies which turned out to be shipwrecks, Miklos said. Working in secret for decades, Cooper created a map with his findings which he believed could
uncover historical shipwrecks as well as treasure. With the shared passions of exploration and discovery, Miklos and Cooper tried to set up an expedition. Cooper unfortunately passed some years ago, but Miklos is still trying to decipher where the charts and maps will take him. Miklos promises: “There’s a lot more to Turks and Caicos than a lot of people know about and I think that’s what’s going to make this show so interesting because after you watch you’re going to learn stuff about your country that you probably, more than likely, didn’t know about.” He added that there’s “a really neat
history between the early astronauts as well as the early explorers and it’s fantastic how it ties into Turks and Caicos.” One of the show’s executive producers, Ari Mark of AMPLE, said, “The footage is pretty amazing because we’re using a lot of aerial and a lot of drones and a lot of underwater camera photography.” The crew, including a group of experienced explorers and researchers, have already spent some time filming in the island and expect to be back as the series progresses. All are invited to tune in to the adventure and history series on Tuesday, April 18, to find out what will be uncovered.
Hurricane hunters come to TCI AIRCRAFT reconnaissance plays an extremely important role in monitoring the track and intensity of tropical cyclones. Every hurricane season the US Air Force and NOAA Reconnaissance Hurricane aircraft provides valuable meteorological data not available from any other source. The USAF 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters of the Air Force Reserve has been flying into tropical storms and hurricanes since 1944. It is the only operational unit in the world flying weather reconnaissance on a routine basis. The Hurricane Hunters provide surveillance of tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, the
Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern Pacific Ocean. On April 27 NOAA’s National Weather Service, in partnership with the United States Air Force, Hurricane Hunters, will be visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands as part of the 2017 Caribbean Awareness Tour (CHAT). The delegation will be led by Dr Richard Knabb, director of NOAA’s National Hurricane Centre. CHAT is an annual tour which aims to raise hurricane awareness across Latin America and the Caribbean. It also aims to maintain and expand partnerships among the NHC, US Northern Command, Air Force and neighbours in the region. According to a press release: “The
tour by the aircraft to the Islands and countries in the region is an excellent opportunity for the relevant authorities involved in storm/ warning/disaster management and the public-at-large to see the aircraft, meet and speak to the US Air Force crew and the civilian hurricane specialists involved.” This will be the first time the aircraft will be visiting the TCI. During the visit, a brief media event has been schedule by the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies. Following that Government officials and students from the public and private schools in Providenciales will be given a tour of the Aircraft Reconnaissance. The tour will allow people to see

Public urged to submit nominations for National Awards BY OLIVIA ROSE AS THE deadline for submissions draws nearer, the public is being urged to submit nominees for five classifications of Government awards including The Order of National Hero and The Order of Turks and Caicos Islands. The National Honours and Awards Committee (NHAC) in a release this week has reiterated its call for nominations to be submitted for the third annual TCI National Honours and Awards Programme. The programme recognises outstanding locals who have made a praiseworthy contribution to the country’s development. Forms are available at the Premier’s Office in Grand Turk and Providenciales, The District Commissioners Office and on the Government’s website. The completed nomination should be delivered in a sealed envelope clearly marked National Honour and Award Programme or to any member of the National Honours and Awards
Committee on or before June 30. Speaking at a recent press conference, president of the committee Willette Swan said the honours and awards form depicts a description of the achievements, merits and service a recipient should possess. The categories of awards are: The Order of National Hero, The Order of Turks and Caicos Islands, The Patriotic Award, The Long Service Medal, The Meritorious Award and the National Young Achievers Medal. He said: “The honours and awards consists of two orders, one award, and three medals. “The first order is the order of National Hero, it may be granted to an Islander for extraordinary and outstanding achievement in merit in service to the Islands or to humanity. “The person may have the title ‘The Right Excellent’ and may wear the insignia of the order. “We’ve named only one National Hero. and Caicos is the second order, it may be granted to an Islander who has served with distinction in a field or discipline. “The recipient may have the title ‘The most Honourable’ and the letters ‘OTCI’ after his name and may wear the insignia of the order. “The Patriotic Award comes in two categories, the gold for Turks and Caicos Islander and silver for a non-Turks and Caicos Islander. “It may be granted to someone who has demonstrated a keen sense of national consciousness and rendered exceptional sacrificial service to the Islands and the people and of the Islands. “And the silver to a non-Islander for demonstrating a very high regard for national integration and for philanthropic contribution to the development of the Islands.” He explained that the recipient of that award will have the title the ‘The Much Honoured’ and the letters ‘PA’ after his name and may wear the
insignia of the order. The committee has so far named eight nominees. Swan said: “The Meritorious Service medal may be granted to an Islander who has been giving sacrificial and meritorious service in a field that is inherently challenging or has performed a brave or humane act whether in the Islands or abroad.” Swan further pointed out that there are specific guidelines which must be followed to ensure that the nomination process is fair and balanced. “It is of utmost importance that you nominate persons that you believed are worthy to receive an award. “Additionally, a nominator must match the person that is nominated to the award since the committee cannot nominate him or her for a different honour or award. “Ensure that you provide all the information, in whatever form that information takes, to support your reason why your nominee should be so honoured,” Swan said.
“Whether documents, newspaper clippings, letters, testimonials.” It was noted that the process must gain public confidence, trust and respect, and as such, special care should be taken to ensure the honours and awards process is carefully managed, and more importantly, to be seen as fair and balanced. The guidelines which clearly define and outline eligibility and criteria need to follow a framework carefully crafted, studied and adopted as intended. There must be no room to accommodate subjectivity and discretion. The committee must honour their role paying particular attention to judgment, and discharge their duty with integrity and dignity. Honours and awards are a particularly important means of recognition that can show not only how much the contribution of individuals are valued, but also can provide inspiration to others to perform to the standards.

Trust restored LISTENING to the comprehensive 100 day report provided by the new Government, we have to sum it up in two words, ‘trust restored’. It was the ministers’ day and each gave the best possible report. At meeting’s end media person Shaun Malcolm delivered his message of self-praise, then awarded the new Government his personal ‘A’ rating. Deandrea Hamilton asked about transparency. Transparency is sought for the InterHealth Canada contract and NHIP Rufuscare. Minister Edwin Astwood had to report with a sly smile that in depth health system investigations were underway.
BY DAVID TAPFER
David is a retired mobile hydraulic engineer and business executive. He has been married to Middle Caicos native Yvette Robinson Tapfer for 27 years and has lived in Conch Bar, Middle Caicos, since 2002. David formerly served as branch chairman of the PDM from 2008 to 2011
This time the PDM will make the results public! Deputy Premier Sean reported that the issues of immigration and border control are in a word “monumental” and being unravelled. Sean is hard at work first sorting it all out. Minister Higgs is also hard at his first political experience. He reports that ‘Royal Reef’ a
failed PNP vetted resort on North Caicos will no longer lay unfinished and dormant. Ralph, previously the Director of Tourism, has used his contacts well. Airlines may now connect Grand Turk with our main tourism source, the USA. All roads will soon be paved. Road drainage design is underway.
Infrastructure projects will soon start reported Minister Goldray. Education minister Josephine reported in detail what can be summed up as hope restored and frustration ending for youth. Three election winners Chief Derek Taylor, PDM chairman Douglas Parnell and Karen Malcolm were standing by and not mentioned by Premier Sharlene. Taylor and Parnell have been important leaders in the past. Building our economy and putting a stop to the corrupt goings on of 2003/2009. It has been said that Douglas is the Premier’s eyes and ears on Provo and Derek fills that role on Grand Turk. Winner Karen is getting her feet wet in parliament?
One fault with the ministerial system is a minister elected in a district has to perform ministerial duties plus take care of business for his or her consistency. Kate Sullivan who created the new electoral system thought that at large candidates would end up ministers. Sharlene and Josephine do fill that role. However who could better serve the people of North and Middle than district winner Ralph Higgs who will bring development to his big family islands. In 100 days trust has been restored in managing our finances. The new budget arrived on time for the first time in over a decade. Without a need for the British CFO okay. PDM will now get to manage the income resources they put in place before 2003. We can now look forward to restoration of the 2006 Constitution because our new internal Government has restored trust in only 100 days.

Easter message 2017 By The Right Reverend Laish Boyd, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands I WILL sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; For your steadfast love was established forever. Psalm 89:1a and 2a. As we celebrate another Easter, we note that, at its core, Easter is about a deep love that God the Father has for human beings. God gave His Son to live, to preach, to teach, to die, to rise again and to ascend to His Father to bring us all into a new relationship with the Heavenly Father. St John writes (3:16) that: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.” It is an enduring love that has implications far beyond the date of the event. Jesus’ dying conquered sin and death and their power over us, allowing us to have forgiveness, newness of life and a constant chance to start over whenever we stumble. Paul writes that: “God showed His great love for us in that while we were sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8) The Resurrection is the high point
of a relationship and an intention that God had for his children. God gave His only Son for us even though we did not ask for it or deserve it or realise that we needed it. This is the true nature of love, and it is symbolic of human life itself. Let us examine the three parts of God’s loving intention: WHAT WE DID NOT ASK FOR Many of us have benefitted from things that we did not actually ask for: the kindness of a total stranger, the help of a co-worker or relative who anticipates our circumstances and does something to help us before we can ask him/her to. Have we ever heard the famous words: “Don’t worry, I already have that covered.” WHAT WE DID NOT DESERVE A man I once met told me his story. In his younger days, he had no time for his family and was always gone, busy doing this or that, involved in
all sorts of things. He had been involved in alcohol and drug abuse, and in infidelity to the point of neglect and even abuse of his family. His wife had to struggle and carry the full load of maintaining and sustaining the family. His children resented this deeply and were bitter, and even hostile toward him. Now, in the middle of his life, he is mature and wiser, a changed man who has reordered his priorities dramatically. His children, now adults with their own children, are completely devoted to him. You could not tell that there were twenty years of ‘hell’ in their family life. This fellow is “eternally” grateful. He told me that he does not deserve their devotion, their love and forgiveness. Yes, indeed, he is still struggling to forgive himself for those years of neglect. Every one of us has received CONTINUED

According to many reviews destination weddings are often more affordable and less expensive to host since the wedding becomes the honeymoon trip as well. For busy couples, the convenience
of celebrating a wedding and honeymoon in the same place has financial and time saving advantages. The TCI Government hopes to tap into this market in a more robust manner.

HRT and gum disease HORMONE replacement therapy (HRT) has been credited with helping women manage a range of menopause-related issues, including hot flushes, heart health and bone density, and now new research suggests HRT could be used to reduce gum disease and prevent tooth loss. The study, which evaluated nearly 500 women between the ages of 50 and 87, discovered rates of gum disease were significantly lower in those receiving HRT, with many seeing a 44 percent improvement in gum health. The menopause, which commonly occurs in women in their late 40s and early 50s, leaves women at higher risk of several health issues, including gum disease, due to the decrease in oestrogen levels. Gum disease is the leading cause
of tooth loss while previous studies have also suggested more than one in four (28 percent) post-menopausal women are likely to suffer from tooth loss within five years. As a result, the UK Oral Health Foundation, is encouraging woman to be more aware of their oral health during this time and are offering advice about how to cope with such changes to the mouth. Karen Coates, from the Oral Health Foundation, said: “Several significant changes occur in the body during the menopause and many have resulting symptoms which can have a substantial impact on a woman’s day-to-day life, so much so that oral health can at times feel like the least of their worries. “Falling oestrogen levels throughout menopause can cause numerous health issues, such as

TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS First, ensure that you take regular breaks from sitting. Get up, take a walk outside around the office and stretch. POSTURE PERFECT Next, pay attention to your posture. Sitting incorrectly puts strain on your lower back, decreases blood flow to your working muscles and
accelerates fatigue. Practice ‘active sitting’ with your feet flat on the ground in front of you, your back straight, your shoulders squared and your chin parallel with the floor. This posture will strengthen the core muscles of your abdomen, sides and back to reduce the strain on other areas. The stronger your core muscles, the easier it will be to maintain good posture. CHOOSE A GOOD OFFICE CHAIR What’s most important in preventing injury and strain is to be able to easily vary your sitting positions throughout the day. An investment in a good office chair can help a lot. The right chair for you should: - Be easily adjustable to suit your size - Adapt to support your spine in various working positions - Have a backrest that supports your lower back

loss of bone density, leading to osteoporosis. “At the same time, changes in oral health also are common as teeth and gums become more susceptible to disease, resulting in heightened risk of inflammation, bleeding, pain, and ultimately, loose or missing teeth.” In addition to gum disease and tooth loss, women undergoing menopause can also be at heightened risk of other oral health conditions such as dry mouth, burning mouth syndrome and weakness in the jaw bone. Helen Minnery, president of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy, added: “While HRT could offer women an opportunity to alleviate some painful symptoms, it is extremely important to continue maintaining a good oral health and hygiene routine during menopause. “Brushing our teeth twice a daylast thing at night and at one other time during the day - with a fluoride toothpaste and reducing the amount of sugary foods and drinks we consume could make a significant
Sitting on the job DOES your job find you sitting most of the day? While sitting can seem restful, keep in mind that staying in any one position for long periods of time can cause strain and injury to your muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. Sustained sitting can take a toll on your neck and lower back - steady compression on the spinal discs hinder their nutrition and can contribute to premature degeneration. So, if you have to sit at work, what can you do to stay pain free? Here are some tips:

- Have armrests, if they are appropriate to your work - Have a front edge that curves downward to promote proper posture STABILITY BALLS One recent trend is to use a stability ball at the office. While a ball is a great tool to help you tone your abs at home or at the gym, it should not replace a good chair at your work station. If you do bring the ball to work: -Use the ball only for short periods -Use your abdominal, back and side muscles to maintain straight posture -Stop when your muscles feel tired Sitting on a ball instead of a chair can actually increase the pressure on your back, especially if your core muscles aren’t strong. So, sitting a long time on the ball may lead to greater discomfort in your lower back. Do not use a ball if you have osteoporosis, balance or low back

Five reasons to be a more grateful person this Easter
EASTER break is one that encourages the gratitude out of all of us. Whether we believe in the Easter bunny or we believe in the risen saviour Jesus, Easter time compels us to be grateful for life and the family and friends we get to spend our time with. So why is it that at times we find ourselves simply going through the motions of gratitude versus truly reflecting on the wonderful blessings we have? Simply put, we are humans and sometimes we can take things for granted, even unintentionally. Between the busyness of our schedules and lives, sometimes it can be difficult for us to maintain a constant positive outlook on things or to be grateful for the things we have. Gratitude is one of the most powerful forms of positivity and has the ability to not only change our moods and perception towards life, it can also strengthen our relationships with others and ourselves! Here are five benefits to gratitude that will inspire us to be more grateful this Easter season and beyond. INCREASED AND LONG TERM HAPPINESS Would you like to be happy? Do you enjoy being happy? If your answer
is yes, then let me be the one to introduce you to gratitude, a proven skill to increase happiness. Why do you ask? Because when we take the time to identify the positive moments in our lives, big or small, it heightens our well-being and positive mood. More so, when we practice this skill over time, we strengthen and train our cognitive muscles to view our lives and situations through the lens of gratitude versus perpetual negativism or fear. When we are too busy being grateful for what we do have, we dedicate less time focusing on the things we think we want, but really do not need. IT IMPROVES RELATIONSHIPS A plethora of studies have been conducted on the power of gratitude and its effects on your overall relationship. When we incorporate gratitude for the people we have in our lives, we not only are able to actively become more positive people, but we also show our gratitude more through the actions that we take to show that level of love and appreciation for the people in our lives too. Whether you have a large or small family, little or much money, many friends or maybe just one friend,
LET’S TALK HEALTH
learning to love and appreciate what you have opens your life up to stronger relationships and maybe even new ones. IT IMPROVES OUR LEVEL OF EMPATHY AND CARING There have been ground-breaking neuroscience research on gratitude that has proven the positive effects of gratitude on our cardiovascular systems, resilience to diseases, as well as the benefits it can bring to our immune systems. As it turns out, beyond this there are benefits to our brains for gratitude as well. According to Giacomo Bono, PhD, gratitude rewires the reward circuits in our brain where we are able to become more empathetic and caring towards others regardless if we fully understand their situations or not. Gratitude has also been linked to reducing depression too.
IT IMPROVES OUR SLEEP QUALITY AND DURATION Simply put, the happier your thoughts are, the less stressed you are about certain things in your life. Because of this you are able to fall asleep quicker, stay asleep longer and wake up rested enough to tackle another day. IT MAKES US BETTER PEOPLE This is in no way saying that who we are as people is not incredible already. What this merely suggests is that incorporating more gratitude in our lives can only bring more positivity rather than negativity. When you are able to identify the wonderful things about your life down to the fact that we are simply alive and breathing, this realisation alone can be enough motivation and reason for us to allow gratitude to fill
Easter message 2017 something that we felt that we did not deserve. WHAT WE DID NOT REALISE THAT WE NEEDED In a home a child is subjected to certain rules and procedures. When a student goes to university to prepare for a career or when an employee begins a new job ‘at the bottom of the ladder,’ he/she has to be given the basic training, has to be taken through the ropes - and I mean this in its most positive and constructive sense. Sometimes that child, student or employee has to do things that he/ she does not understand, that he/ she does not want to do, that he/she considers to be a waste of time or that seems to have no connection to the goal. However, the parent, the
teacher, the trained professional and the supervisor know why the subordinate has to learn certain things and why things ought to be done a certain way. Often the subordinate does not know what he/she needs to learn or that he/she needs to do things a certain way to ensure well-being and full potential in the future. All of us benefit from the fact that many people in our lives did things for us, the usefulness or value of which - the simple necessity for which - we had no conception of at the time. Only now that we are older, or that some time has passed, do we appreciate it, and thank those people again and again and again and again. I know that I had often told my

FINAL THOUGHTS Easter is a time where we are able to be with those that we love and reflect on the many gifts and blessings that we have in our lives. Some of us may throw parties, have dinners, or just take the time off as a way to relax. However way we choose to enjoy your Easter break, bear in mind that we are blessed beyond measure. There is a saying by Epicurus, a Greek philosopher that states: ‘Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.’ Stay grateful for the people, the opportunities and the life you live, and always remember that even in times of doubt, negativity and mistakes, forward is forward regardless of the pace.

Bahamians will vote on May 10 PRIME Minister Perry Christie rang the proverbial bell on Tuesday morning, announcing that the 2017 election will be held on Wednesday, May 10. His televised address, given live at the Office of the Prime Minister, came moments after Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade, in his capacity as provost marshal, read proclamations outside the House of Assembly from Governor General Dame Marguerite Pindling dissolving Parliament. Mr Christie said he is confident the election will be free and fair and will follow a spirited and peaceful campaign that is consistent with this country’s political traditions. “Earlier today, just a short while ago, the present Parliament was of?cially dissolved,” Mr Christie said. “Every seat in the House of Assembly is now vacant. “It is now left to you, the citizenry of our beloved nation, to decide who will fill those seats in the next House of Assembly. In doing so, you will also be deciding who will form the government of the Bahamas for the next five years. “You will make that momentous decision in what I earnestly hope and pray will be free and fair elections following a spirited but peaceful campaign. Let us contest the forthcoming elections with all the vigour at our command.” “Let us do so, however, with respect for the human dignity of our opponents and with respect for the traditions we all hold dear. “We are one of the oldest democracies in our hemisphere. Another prediction of below average hurricane season Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade reads the proclamation dissolving Parliament outside the House of Assembly on Tuesday morning.
Parliament traces its history back hundreds of years. “Let us by our conduct in the general election campaign that of?cially starts today prove ourselves worthy of the great democratic traditions of free, fair and peaceful elections that have made our country the marvel of nations around the world. “I have every con?dence that we shall. “And so, my fellow Bahamians, it’s over to you now. Together you will decide the way forward. You will do so in general elections that will take place throughout the Commonwealth of the Bahamas on Wednesday, May 10, 2017,” Mr Christie said.
While many were looking forward to Mr Christie’s announcement, not everyone was happy with the date chosen, as it coincides with the anniversary of the deaths of Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) marines aboard HMBS Flamingo. Some people called into The Tribune yesterday to complain about the government’s oversight in this regard. On May 10, 1980, after arresting two Cuban fishing vessels near the Ragged Island chain, Able Seaman Fenrick Sturrup, 21, Marine Seaman Austin Rudolph Smith, 21, Marine Seaman David Allison Tucker, 21, and Marine Seaman Edward Arnold Williams, 23, were killed when Cuban jets fired on and sank HMBS Flamingo.
METEOROLOGISTS with the Colorado State University (CSU) have agreed with predictions that this year’s hurricane season will be less active, but could include at least three major storms. Weather forecasting service AccuWeather has already forecast a below average season. Both predictions based the expected reduced activity on a reappearance of El Nino – a weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean that impacts global weather patterns. El Nino, which warms the waters of the Pacific Ocean, blocks the development of hurricanes in Atlantic basin. CSU’s hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach, is predicting 11 named
storms, four hurricanes and two major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. “April predictions are never super confident, but this year I’m a little less confident given the El Niño issue,” said Klotzbach, who released the report at the National Tropical Weather Conference in South Padre Island, Texas. “If El Niño does ramp up, that will make for a more quiet hurricane season.” AccuWeather had said the June 1 to November season “will likely produce about ten storms large enough to be given names by meteorologists”, and half of those could development into hurricanes – three of them large enough to be considered major hurricanes.
Davis: PLP will win 30 seats in Bahamas election DEPUTY Prime Minister Phillip “Brave” Davis yesterday predicted that the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) will win 30 seats in the upcoming general election and the Free National Movement (FNM) will win nine. In an interview on “Darold Miller Live”, Mr Davis told the radio show’s host the Bahamian people know it is too “risky” to put the country in the hands of the FNM and its leader Dr Hubert Minnis - who he described as incompetent. Mr Davis also questioned whether Dr Minnis would remain leader of the FNM if he were to become successful in becoming the nation’s leader. “I see no reason why we shouldn’t take 30 seats,” Mr Davis said. “We will hold all we have plus St Barnabas, that is my assessment. When you wake up the sleeping giant called the PLP and this machinery and when we get our message out, I think the Bahamian people will listen to us and see what we have done and appreciate it is too risky to interrupt

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday that U.N. peacekeeping has made “a great contribution” to Haiti and the Security Council’s expected vote to withdraw all troops from the Caribbean nation by mid-October is an example of how peacekeeping missions should change as a country’s political situation changes. The United States is currently reviewing the U.N.’s 16 far-flung peacekeeping operations to assess costs and effectiveness and Haley told the Security Council that thanks to recent elections in Haiti “the political context is right” for a new and smaller mission.
She strongly backed the transformation of Haiti’s U.N. mission from military patrols to focusing on developing the country’s police force, supporting the rule of law and protecting human rights. The Security Council was scheduled to vote Thursday on a resolution to withdraw the 2,370 military personnel by Oct. 15. Sandra Honore, the U.N. envoy for Haiti, told the council that as a result of successful presidential and legislative elections on Nov. 20 and Jan. 29 “Haiti’s political outlook for 2017 and beyond has significantly improved.”

Bahamas: Butler-Turner says jobs being given for votes
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett in conversation with Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) President, Michelle Paige.
Cruise Association confirms visitor harassment in Jamaica has dipped THE Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) has hailed Jamaica’s success in significantly reducing visitor harassment. During a three-day fact finding trip to the island, the FCCA team led by President, Michelle Paige, said Jamaica has done a tremendous job in tackling the problem head on, noting that there were clear signs that guests could move about freely without fear of being followed or badgered. “The problem is that a lot of the guests have either been complaining or have been reluctant to experience the product because of some of the things they had to go through. That was a major turnoff and certainly was bad for business,” she pointed out. Paige also said that this threatened to derail the special relationship the FCCA has shared with Jamaica for over five decades. Cruise officials, she indicated,
remain unconvinced that the situation had changed, despite representation made by a high powered delegation, led by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, which visited Miami nearly six months ago. “So we decided to come and see for ourselves; as the saying goes the proof is in the pudding. We decided to do something which we haven’t done in 20-odd years, and that is to take a high-level team on the ground in Jamaica to see what exactly is going on. “We can safely say that we are leaving more impressed than we have ever been. If what we saw here over the past three days can be sustained, then you guys have every reason to be optimistic,” Paige said. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett welcomed the FCCA delegation’s visit to get a first-hand view of the Government’s anti-harassment efforts which he said “clearly have been bearing fruits.”
Haiti president calls stone-throwers ‘terrorists’ HAITI’S President Jovenel Moise has slammed as “terrorists” the unidentified attackers who hurled stones at his motorcade late Saturday. “There are no words strong enough to express the ignominy of these terrorist acts,” a statement from his office said. Supporters of the president reported that his motorcade was targeted as it moved through the town of Arcahaie north of the capital Port-au-Prince. The town has been regularly rocked for almost two years by residents demonstrating against a redistricting decision by the former president. In July 2015 then-president
Michel Martelly issued a decreee to split the town into two districts, enraging locals. The statement condemned the rock-throwing as “acts endangering the life of the President of the Republic.” Apart from political protests, Haiti is struggling to recover from the world’s most significant recent cholera outbreak, with an estimated 30,000 cases expected this year. The Caribbean nation, the poorest country in the Americas, is also grappling with the aftermath of a January 2010 earthquake, with tens of thousands of people still living in tents without proper sanitation. LONG Island MP Loretta ButlerTurner on Monday blasted the Christie administration over the reported launch of a jobs programme in her constituency, claiming 28 people were handpicked for new employment as an election approaches. Describing this as “ridiculous” and “reprehensible”, the Independent candidate further accused her Progressive Liberal Party rival, attorney Glendon Rolle, of making promises to get support as he campaigned on the island. While Mr Rolle could not be reached on Monday, PLP Chairman Bradley Roberts said he had no knowledge of a newly-launched jobs programme in Long Island. In a Facebook post this week, Mrs Butler-Turner raised concern over the reported “pre-election hires”, adding that no guidelines or advertising had been done for the jobs. She also questioned where the government was finding the money to pay the new employees. This comes as government officials have still not answered questions regarding the reasoning for a quadrupled budget for the Office of the Prime Minister. Details of the government’s midyear fiscal performance revealed the $62.532m increase. The increase came under the heading “grants, fixed

No guidelines or advertising has been done for such jobs. These persons are being hand picked by the PLP and their Long Island candidate. “This is not hearsay. This is confirmed using the people’s tax dollars, the very same thing they accused the previous (Ingraham) administration of.”
Days after the PLP defeated the Free National Movement in a landslide victory in the 2012 general election, Prime Minister Perry Christie said his government would seek to prevent future governments from awarding contracts ahead of and after the dissolution of Parliament. He described these as “bribes”, adding that he was concerned about contracts awarded under the former government just prior to the election. However the government did not implement any law or policy prohibiting this and instead has been accused of issuing contracts over the past several weeks to gain favour with voters. Mrs Butler-Turner, the former Deputy Leader of the FNM, continued: “I cry shame on Perry G Christie. Long Islanders take the jobs. You need them. But catch the wave. Do not vote for these people that have not looked at you since last election. “They are running scared. Team LBT and the ‘Blue Wave’ is moving to keep you updated of the tricks they are playing on people.” In a later interview with The Tribune, Mrs Butler-Turner said she found it “unfathomable” that there were people in Long Island that have not been paid for contracts since last year, but yet the PLP was giving away jobs.

Ohio boy, 8, steals father’s car and drives little sister up to McDonald’s drive-thru AN 8-year-old boy craving a cheeseburger hopped into his father’s car and drove himself and his younger sister to a McDonald’s near their Ohio home. East Palestine officer Jacob Koehler told the Morning Journal the hilariously bizarre incident happened Sunday evening. According to Koehler, the police department received numerous phone calls about a child behind the wheel of a car. Surprisingly, witnesses told cops the tiny motorist had impressive driving skills and did not do any damage to his father’s car or anyone else’s vehicle. Residents said the boy followed all traffic laws, including stopping at red lights and waiting for other cars to pass before making a left turn into the McDonald’s parking lot. Officers said the boy drove straight to the fast-food restaurant, located about a mile and a half from his home, to get something to eat. The boy’s sister, 4, was riding shotgun. Authorities said when the two kids pulled up to the drive-thru window workers at the eatery assumed it was a prank. “The workers thought that the parents were in the back,” Koehler

Gun crime in London increases by 42% Gun crime offences in London surged by 42% in the last year, according to official statistics. The Met Police’s figures showed there were 2,544 gun crime offences from April 2016 to April 2017 compared to 1,793 offences from 2015 until 2016. Knife crime also increased by 24% with 12,074 recorded offences from 2016 to 2017. The Met said although crime rates were rising they remained at a much lower level than five years ago. Scotland Yard registered annual rises across a number of serious offence categories in the past 12 months, following several years of falls. The total number of offences during the 2016 to 2017 financial year was 774,737, an increase of 4% from the previous year when total offences stood at 740,933. Knife crime offences that resulted in an injury also increased, by 21% to 4,415 from 2016 to 2017, compared to 3,663 offences the year before. The force said robbery offences, which increased 12% year-onyear, were at about half the level of 2006-2007 and there were 58 fewer homicides this year compared to 10 years ago. Drug offences fell by 9%, from 41,164 to 37,374. Burglary offences also fell slightly, from 69,703 to 69,501. Sophie Linden, London’s deputy mayor for policing, said: “These figures are deeply disturbing, and a stark reminder of the enormous pressure our police are under every day as they work so tirelessly to protect us.” A report from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary said it was satisfied with the Met’s overall performance, but warned there were areas of “serious concern” about its effectiveness that needed to be addressed. Trump says NATO ‘no longer obsolete’ US President Donald Trump has said NATO is “no longer obsolete”, reversing a stance that had alarmed allies. Hosting NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House, Mr Trump said the threat of terrorism had underlined the alliance’s importance. He called on NATO to do more to help Iraqi and Afghan “partners”. Mr Trump has repeatedly questioned NATO’s purpose, while complaining that the US pays an unfair share of membership. The NATO U-turn wasn’t Mr Trump’s only change of heart on Wednesday. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he said he would not label China a currency manipulator, despite having repeatedly pledged to do so on his first day in office. At a joint press conference with Mr Stoltenberg, Mr Trump said: “The secretary general and I had a productive discussion about what
more NATO can do in the fight against terrorism.” “I complained about that a long time ago and they made a change, and now they do fight terrorism. “I said it [NATO] was obsolete. It’s no longer obsolete.” But Mr Trump reiterated his call for NATO member states to contribute more funding to the alliance. “If other countries pay their fair share instead of relying on the United States to make up the difference we will all be much more secure,” said the US president. The meeting comes hours after US Secretary of States Rex Tillerson met Russian President Vladimir Putin during a trip to Moscow. “Things went pretty well. Maybe better than anticipated,” Mr Trump said about that meeting. “Right now we’re not getting along with Russia at all. We may be at an all-time low in terms of relationship with Russia.” (BBC)
Suicidal Oregon father kills two daughters, dies in exchange of gunfire with police AN Oregon father killed his two daughters and then died following an exchange of gunfire with police, authorities say. A Portland woman told police early Wednesday that her suicidal husband was missing along with their daughters, ages 8 and 11. The man had been threatening the girls, according to police. An officer spotted the man’s SUV in a parking lot in nearby Gresham. The officer got out of his patrol car, and shots were fired. The man’s car was also on fire, according to KGW.
Officers rushed to try to save the children, but they were found dead in the backseat. One officer was injured, according to KGW. “They (the officers) put their own lives at risk to try and rescue those girls,” an official who was not identified told the station. “It’s a horrible and horrific situation for all involved,” Gresham police Sgt. John Rasmussen told KGW. It wasn’t immediately clear how or when the girls died. Their identities have not been released. (NYDailynews)

Melania Trump wins damages from Daily Mail over ‘escort’ allegation
Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, center left, and Hamid Baghaei registered in Tehran on Wednesday as candidates in elections in May.
Hard-line ex-leader Ahmadinejad stuns Iran with election bid STUNNING Iran and disregarding the words of its supreme leader, former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad registered Wednesday to run in the country’s May presidential election and upended a contest largely expected to be won by its moderate incumbent. Though Ahmadinejad still might not be approved for the ballot by Iran’s clerically overseen government, merely the mention of the Holocaust-questioning populist might energize discontent hardliners who want a Persian answer to U.S. President Donald Trump. Ahmadinejad’s candidacy also comes as Trump has threatened a reappraisal of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers and as fissures still linger inside Iran after his contested 2009 re-election, which brought massive unrest. Associated Press journalists watched as stunned election officials processed Ahmadinejad’s paperwork on Wednesday. Asked about Ahmadinejad’s decision, one Tehran-based analyst offered a blunt
assessment. “It was an organised mutiny against Iran’s ruling system,” said Soroush Farhadian, who backs reformists. Ever the showman, a smiling Ahmadinejad made “V for Victory” hand signals and walked his former Vice President Hamid Baghaei through the process of registering first. Just when it appeared Ahmadinejad would be leaving, he turned around and returned to the Interior Ministry’s registration desk, pulling out his identification documents with a flourish in front of a melee of shouting journalists. Ahmadinejad’s decision shocked Iran as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei offered a thinly veiled warning in September that his candidacy would be a “polarized situation” that would be “harmful for the county.” That referenced Ahmadinejad’s disputed re-election in 2009, which sparked massive protests and a sweeping crackdown in which thousands of people were detained and dozens were killed.
THE UK’s Daily Mail newspaper has agreed to pay damages and costs to the first lady of the United States over an article about her modelling career. The newspaper had reported allegations that Melania Trump once worked as an escort, but later retracted the claims. The story was published during the US election campaign last year. Mrs Trump accepted damages and an apology from the newspaper at London’s High Court. The article was published by the Daily Mail newspaper, and subsequently the paper’s digital operation Mail Online. In a statement, Mrs Trump’s lawyer said that she is “very pleased” and “will remain vigilant to protect her good name and reputation from those who make false and defamatory statements about her”. Mrs Trump filed a lawsuit against the Daily Mail in the UK, and filed against Mail Online in the US. The payout settles the case both in New York and the UK, despite London’s High Court having no jurisdiction in the US. The US suit, filed last year, sought damages of $150m (£120m). The amount accepted by Mrs Trump in London was not disclosed in court. However, reports suggest the payout was closer to $3m, including legal costs and damages. In its apology, the Daily Mail acknowledged it had published “allegations that she provided services beyond simply modelling”. The article also claimed that Mr and Mrs Trump may have met three years before they actually did, and later “staged” their first meeting.
Mrs Melania Trump accepted damages and an apology from the newspaper at London’s High Court.
“We accept that these allegations about Mrs Trump are not true,” the newspaper said. A lawyer for Mrs Trump told the London court the allegations “strike at the heart of the claimant’s personal integrity and dignity”. Her lawyer said the doublepage spread in August last year, titled “Racy photos and troubling questions about his wife’s past that could derail Trump”, featured an old nude photo of Mrs Trump from her modelling career. “Readers of the newspaper that day could not fail to miss the article,” he said. Mrs Trump’s lawsuit initially said that Mrs Trump had the “unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multi-million dollar business
relationships for a multi-year term during which [she] is one of the most photographed women in the world”. Critics used the phrasing to question whether Mrs Trump had plans to make financial gains from her position as first lady. A second version of the suit, re-filed weeks later, dropped the controversial wording. Mrs Trump was born Melanija Knavs, in Sevnica, a small town about an hour’s drive from Slovenia’s capital of Ljubljana. She was signed to a modelling agency in her late teens, and began flying around Europe and the US, appearing in high-profile ad campaigns. She met Donald Trump in 1998, when she was 28 years old, at a party during New York Fashion week. They married seven years later. (BBC)
Couple who allegedly killed son inspired by Manchester by the Sea: prosecutor SHOCKING new allegations emerged in court Friday when prosecutors said the upstate New York parents accused of murdering their special needs son — and burning their house down to cover it up – came up with the idea after watching the movie Manchester by the Sea. On Feb. 28, 16-year-old Jeffrey Franklin was found dead after a fire at the Mount Upton, New York, home he shared with his adoptive parents, Ernest Franklin, 35, and Heather Franklin, 33, who are now charged in his death. An investigation after the fire revealed that Jeffrey, a special needs child who was deaf, did not have smoke or soot in his mouth, trachea or bronchi — which would have been present if he had died as a result of the fire, according to court records. According to a transcript of a Friday bail review obtained by
local station WBNG, Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride alleged that on the night of the murder, Heather Franklin watched the Oscar-nominated movie, Manchester by the Sea, in which the main character, played by Casey Affleck, kills his children in an accidental fire. Affleck’s character is told in the movie that one can’t be prosecuted for accidentally killing his children, McBride told the judge. “Within two hours of that movie playing to this defendant and her husband, Jeffrey’s deceased,” McBride said. According to McBride, the boy, whom the Franklins adopted in approximately 2012, had bowel issues and urine control issues. “There was a very big strain in the family relationship because of Jeffrey’s special needs and that this defendant was complaining on

McBride alleged Heather Franklin “inexplicably left the house.” She allegedly drove around Chenango County and Delaware County and
didn’t return home “until the fire totally engulfs the house,” McBride said. Heather Franklin told police she went to the Price Chopper in Sidney and then the Norwich Wal-Mart looking for a certain prescription drug, according to the transcript. But McBride said evidence shows she never went to the aisle in either store where the drug was located. Addressing Ernest Franklin’s alleged role in the scheme, McBride said that “the defendant, with all due respect, was not injured in any way trying to save the alleged — the victim in this particular case.” When police arrived, McBride said “the defendant was very calm, cool, collected and pointed to the room where Jeffrey was lying, and the defendant had no physical injuries from any attempt to try to save him.

Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana were married for four years.
Jackson moves out of home after divorce JANET Jackson has been spotted moving out of her marital home for good following her shock divorce from her husband of four years. The pop singer’s marriage to Qatari multi-millionaire Wissam Al Mana ended a mere three months after the 50-year-old gave birth to their first child, Eissa. The youngest Jackson daughter had all her stuff moved out of the swanky Mayfair abode which she shared with the 42-year-old and their new daughter, born on January 3. Numerous suitcases, boxes, paintings and even baskets were hauled out of the pad by a team of movers. Janet curtailed her notoriously raunchy on-stage performances and image during the relationship with her “sweetie” Wissam, and adopted the role of a Muslim wife despite being raised Jehovah’s Witness. She was occasionally spotted in full Islamic dress covering her body and head and almost always wore black when with Wissam. The couple went on expensive holidays regularly to avoid “praying eyes”, as Wissam put it. It helped that Wissam was the executive director of the Al Mana Group, and is worth an estimated £820million. Now it seems like a very messy divorce case is going to hit the courtroom, with Janet set to earn millions out of it depending on whether they signed a prenuptial agreement. It’s not known why the couple have decided to part ways, but yesterday a source told People: “For years, Janet tried to adapt to [Wissam’s] culture.

Entertainment Comedian Charlie Murphy dies at 57 CHARLIE Murphy, Chappelle’s Show star and Eddie Murphy’s older brother, has died, publicist Domenick Nati told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 57. Murphy died from leukemia on Wednesday, said Nati. “Our hearts are heavy with the loss today of our son, brother, father, uncle and friend Charlie, The Murphy family said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Charlie filled our family with love and laughter and there won’t be a day that goes by that his presence will not be missed. Thank you for the outpouring of condolences and prayers. We respectfully ask for privacy during this time of great loss for all of us.” Murphy became a household name through Dave Chappelle’s Comedy Central skit show thanks to his amazing stories of interactions with other celebrities during the height of his brother’s fame in the 1980s. The most popular short turned into a skit was about the late Rick James. Concerning his friendship with James, Murphy once said there were way more wild tales to tell, but they would never had made TV.
The 48-year-old Will Smith appears cheery while holding up his son’s removed locks. Charlie Murphy is the older brother of Eddie Murphy.
“He went there, where I was like, ‘Yo, Rick, you took the shit too far.’ And his response, ‘There’s no such place. Darkness, let’s go to the abyss!’” Murphy once said on a Chappelle’s Show outtake. “I don’t want to go the the abyss, man. Rick wants to go to the abyss. In fact, he dwells in the abyss. And he wants company sometimes, and for some reason, he likes to reach out for me. And I’m not with it. And that’s when we would end up tussling.” The comedian’s Twitter account
sent a final note Tuesday evening that read: “One to Sleep On: Release the past to rest as deeply as possible.” “You’ll be missed but never forgotten,” fellow Chappelle’s Show actor and good friend Donnell Rawlings said in an Instagram post featuring an image together. “Charlie was a lion. It’s time for Darkness to see the light.” Murphy also appeared in numerous movies, TV shows and even lent his voice to some video games.
Will Smith chops off son Jaden’s dreadlocks for a movie role SOMETIMES parents just do understand. Will Smith helped his son Jaden out this week by chopping off his signature dreadlocks in favour of a shorter look for an upcoming movie role. “Getting Jaden Smith ready for the first day of filming #LifeInAYear...maybe I should’ve used scissors?!” the “Fresh Prince
of Bel-Air” star wrote on Facebook Tuesday. The 48-year-old appears cheery while holding up his son’s removed locks while Jaden, 18, appears to gasp in amusement and his new ‘do. Will even holds up the long dyed-blonde strands up to his own head and imitates his son famous pout.

Science & Technology 4D printing makes objects that assemble themselves when heated A NEW 4D-printing technique that creates complex structures in minutes could be used to make temperature-activated cardiac stents, drug capsules and flat-pack furniture. 4D printing creates 3D objects that change their shape over time in response to stimuli such as heat, moisture or light. It is useful for making
structures that can adapt to their environment, but is often a laborious process. The most common materials used in 4D printing, shape-memory polymers, normally require at least five steps to make them into adaptable objects. Hydrogels are simpler to use, but too soft to fashion into rigid structures.
A delicate flower that closes its petals was among a few objects created by the 4D-printing technique.
The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard in the world.
Is Komodo dragon blood the key to new antibiotics? KOMODO dragon blood contains an important compound which scientists think could offer a new treatment for infected wounds. The reptile’s saliva harbours many different types of bacteria, which somehow do not affect the dragon. Scientists at George Mason University in the US created a synthetic compound based on a molecule in dragon blood that had antimicrobial activity. They found it promoted the healing of infected wounds in mice. The study - published in npj Biofilms and Microbiomes suggests that the protein could potentially be developed into an antibiotic in the future. The scientists believe this could be a step forward in the quest to find new antibiotics that are needed to fight
multidrug-resistant pathogens. The dragons that are found on five islands in Indonesia have more than 80 bacterial strains in their mouths, including some that cause blood poisoning or sepsis. The reptiles are not harmed by the bacteria - suggesting they are immune. Led by Monique van Hoek, the team in Virginia found DRGN-1 worked well on infected wounds in mice against two bacterial strains, the “superbugs Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphlyococcus aureus, also known as MRSA. These two bacteria are particularly stubborn and hard to treat as they have bacteria that stick together to form colonies (or biofilms) that are much more resistant to antibiotics than a single bacterium.
Zhen Ding at the Singapore University of Technology and Design and his colleagues have now developed a way to
rapidly print rigid 4D objects with a commercial 3D printer and a heat source. They created a variety of
objects, including a delicate flower that closes its petals, a flat star shape that morphs into a dome, and lattices that contract
and elongate. The structures were made from flat 3D-printed strips that were then heated to make them curve.

Swimming coach expects PBs at CARIFTA meet
BWIC females defended their title.
TCI’s national swimming coach Jennifer Martel is expecting several personal best performances from the six swimmers who will represent us at the CARIFTA Swimming Championships that is set for this weekend in Nassau, Bahamas. “We expect the kids to represent the country well and to improve on their personal best times. Since it is the first time for five out of the six athletes, it is very much an incredible learning experience for them going forward in their competitive swimming careers. Laura Shaw, who competed two years ago, is the only

swimmer with CARIFTA experience. Unlike 2015, she will not compete in eight events, but focus on the backstroke (100M and 200M) and the freestyle (100M and 200M). Luke Haywood will focus on the breaststroke (50, 100 and 200M), the freestyle (50, 100 and 200M) and the Individual Medley (all four strokes). Alex Maclaren will do the 50M freestyle, the 50M backstroke, the 50M breaststroke, the 50M butterfly and 100M freestyle, while Jack Parlee, Caylen Castillo and Lillian Taylor will each do the 50M freestyle and the 50M backstroke.
Young sailors competitive at Nassau tournament
Wesley Methodist won the male competition.
BWIC continue dominance of female high school volleyball – Wesley Methodist win male title THE British West Indies Collegiate (BWIC) dominance of the female High School Volleyball Tournament continued for the third consecutive year while Wesley Methodist were crowned new male champions. In the tournament, last week, at the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex court, the Maureen Jones coached
BWIC team eased through the preliminary round, but faced a feisty Clement Howell High School team who they defeated 2725 and 25-23 in the final. BWIC captain, MyahAudae Simpson, won the MVP trophy. In the male final on Friday, Wesley Methodist, defeated Marjorie Basden High 2-0. Defending champions CHHS finished third.
TCI young sailors represented us with distinction at last weekend’s annual KPMG Championships at the Nassau Yacht Club. The 10 sailors were competitive, according to Coach Keir Clarke. In fact, in the Optimist Division, our six sailors finished in the top 12 of 32 participants. Notable performances were from Maya Lopes Wilson (Our Youth Americas Cup representative) and Tristan Grandsire on day two of the regatta, who sailed many results inside the top five boats. According to Clarke, Day one was handed to our youngest sailor at the meet, Grace Reaston Brown, who sailed excellently and managed to score a second place in race three. Clarke said, “It was amazing watching Grace in the third race. She sailed with such intelligence and maturity, it was like watching myself 20 years ago when I was competing in the same boat! It just goes to show that all of our young sailors are more than capable of scoring the same results, with a bit more practice and time spent on the water” In the Olympic Laser Class, our young team: Rori Bywater,
The young sailors performed well at the championships.
Cam Rennie, Oliver Downes and Grace Mann sailed a good regatta. 13-year-old Rori, who was competing in her first ever Laser 4.7 event, finished in the medals—3rd place overall. Grace, Oliver (our ale Americas Cup Rep) and Cameron sailed brilliantly in the Olympic Laser radial Class to finish 7h, 8th & 9th place respectively. It was a very positive regatta, with huge improvements from the last time we visited. Coach Clarke added “We still have a lot to work on, if we are going to challenge for a podium position, but as the youngest and most inexperienced team, we have a lot in our favour.”
Clarke added that: “Regattas like these carry quite heavy costs, with flights, accommodation, entry fees and meals out to factor in, so in future we would love to seek out a specific Regatta sponsor; someone who we represent abroad, and wear their corporate clothing on our gear and equipment, and provide them with added publicity & the knowledge that they are helping to spread the word that TCI Sailing is a force to be reckoned with!” On home turf, the Provo Sailing Club is entering their regatta season. This weekend on Easter Sunday and Monday sees the first annual Easter
Regatta in Blue Hills, which is set to be a fantastic family sailing heritage celebration and festival. In May the club is organising the “Spring Fling” regatta. In June, the infamous Fool’s Regatta returns for the 26th Year on June 17th, and on July 8th will be the School’s Out Cooper Cup Regatta. There will also be summer sailing camps, and for anyone interested in getting in to sailing, attending a camp, volunteering their time to assist at the club or becoming a valued sponsor, please do get in touch with Head Coach and Manager Keir Clarke on keir@tcisailing.com or call 244-9906.

Coach Ford pleased with work ethics of CARIFTA athletes – Feels TCI can win three medals NATIONAL athletics coach Randy Ford is optimistic that the Turks and Caicos Islands national athletics team will bring back medals from Curacao. Nineteen athletes travelled on Wednesday and Thursday from TCI, Jamaica and the US respectively to the Dutch Caribbean island for the 2017 CARIFTA Games. The team will begin competing this Saturday in the three-day championships. Six of the athletes are attending schools abroad: Five in Jamaica and
one in the US. Ford, who is in charge of the side for the second year, said he is pleased with the mentality of the squad. “I am pleased with the work ethics of the athletes this year. They are more aware of the fact that they are representing a nation and not themselves. They really want to make the citizens of TCI proud and give a good account of themselves.” Ford also credited his coaching team for the attitude of the athletes. “Thanks to coach [Alvirto Ali] Smith and the other track and

field coaches in the TCI we are seeing better conditioned athletes, therefore improving the quality of the national team and the level of competitiveness in track and field in the TCI.” Of the athletes, Ford feels that a few can medal. He singled out Wikenson Fenelon who will do the Octathlon and the pole vault. Fenelon has the national record in the pole vault and is dominant in multi-events. National sprint record holder Akia Guerrier could also win a medal, according to Ford, when
she competes in the 200M. The K-State University student is the most internationally exposed athlete on the team and the virtual leader of the squad. The boys’ 4X100M U18 relay team also stands a chance according to the national coach. That team includes: Reyneldo Germain,
Emanuel Agenor, Fritzsam Morency, Colby Jennings and reserve Latrell Saunders. If TCI can win another medal, it can come from the U20 Girls’ team. A few individual athletes can also challenge for a medal, including Ken Reyes, who has been consistently improving in the 800M.
Scott earns lifetime Canadian qualification after bodybuilding win DENIQUE Scott earned his first bodybuilding win last Saturday and it was a big one. The Turks Islander, who is attended university in Canada, flexed his way to the Mr. Nova Scotia Men’s Physique 2017 title. With the win, the 25-year-old earned a lifetime qualification to Canadian competitions. The former national athlete began weight training to improve his performance on the track, but soon fell in love with the gym and a strict diet and religious bodywork spurred him to do his first show a few months ago—a second place
performance in the Men’s Physique Class at the Santa Anderson East Coast Classic. His performance in November qualified him for last weekend’s competition, but he never felt that he could have won his division (the Physique A class) or the overall title. “I am extremely humbled for this opportunity. I never went into the show with the mindset of beating other competitors or capturing the title. It was about overcoming myself, my body and its limitations. I knew once I could make it through the preparation
stage I would have already surpassed myself, and my dream of being on a big stage along with other amazing competitors would have be accomplished. “Honestly at no point did I felt that I’d won, the competition was extremely intense among those guys. They made me work for it.” The former CHHS student improved his entire body before competition day, but placed special attention to his back. He trained six days per week and stuck to his strict diet. Twenty odd participants competed for the title.
Denique Scott won both his class (Physique A division) and the overall title last Saturday evening.
