TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , Congratulations and Best Wishes To the Class of 2020 Dear Graduates, I am pleased to extend sincere congratulations to each of you, the members of the Tri-County Technical College Class of 2020. You have reached a significant milestone toward achieving your career and personal goals. We celebrate your accomplishments and a job well done.

Earning a college degree, diploma or certificate is an outstanding achievement for every student, and, in particular, for those who are the first in their families to graduate from college. Student success is our top priority. This means that, when you succeed, we succeed. We applaud you for the tenacity, hard work and dedication you showed during your time as a student at Tri-County Technical College, especially during your final semester as you adjusted to an online learning environment as a result of the novel coronavirus.

I am certain the education you received at Tri-County will provide the foundation and career preparation you need to succeed in life and work. You are well positioned to meet future challenges and opportunities because of your talents, skills, education and strong work ethic.

I want to thank faculty and staff for your efforts to prepare our graduates for the future. TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , 2019 Presidential Medallion for Instructional Excellence Hubert McClure Mathematics Instructor, Arts and Sciences Division The medallion is presented each year to the instructor who has contributed the most during the academic year to the profession of teaching, to the development of the College and to the students.

Hubert McClure’s main focus is always his students, their success in his classroom and in reaching their goals.

“Hubert projects two prominent qualities -- his concern for his students’ success and his use of technology to teach mathematics,” said Dr. Jerry Marshall mathematics instructor in the Arts and Sciences Division. “No one has done more with using the latest technologies to teach mathematics than Hubert.”

A strong advocate for implementing the latest technology in the classroom, McClure, who teaches at the Anderson Campus, was the first at the College to pilot PolyCom live interactive video stream classes.

The use of the video conferencing systems allows the College to maximize the use of teaching resources, while combining low enrollment sections that may not have been feasible to offer at community campuses as individual, stand-alone courses.

Using Skype software and PolyCom videoconferencing allows students at all community campuses to engage live with an instructor on any campus.

McClure was an early adopter of using Smartboards as teaching tools. Six years ago, he began recording his teachings and uploading them to YouTube. Today he records with Skype for Business and uploads to the Internet for students to access.

He also uses Skype to advise and maintain virtual office hours.

The Anderson native has been teaching mathematics classes at Tri-County since 1995. He joined the College as an adjunct instructor and was named mathematics department head for the Comprehensive Studies Division in 1996. In 2003 he transferred to the Arts and Sciences Division where he teaches mathematics.

He says he understands his students who struggle with math. Following graduation from Westside High School, McClure enrolled at Tri-County, taking some comprehensive studies classes himself.

“I enrolled in Tri-County straight out of high school and, like many, struggled in mathematics. But encouragement from compassionate counselors, along with great math instructors, helped me to be successful. Tri-County was a pivotal point in my life next to the Marine Corps. Tri-County was the only place I applied to teach when I graduated from Clemson. I wanted to give back to a place that turned my life around. I haven’t forgotten how difficult it was for me as a student, so I show the same patience and compassion to my students that my former instructors did for me. Initially I struggled but I got assistance and support from faculty and staff and that made the difference. They’re still teaching me today.”

McClure earned an associate in science degree in 1989. He transferred to Clemson University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1994 and he earned a master’s degree in industrial education from Clemson in 2001.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1988 – 94 as a sergeant squad leader. He earned a Presidential Unit citation, Navy Unit citation, Marine Unit citation, National Defense Award, Overseas Deployment Award, Good Conduct Award, Kuwait Liberation Award and a Southwest Asia Award with three stars.

McClure resides in Anderson and has a daughter and a son.

TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award Kellie Smith Boone The Distinguished Alumni Award is given each year at commencement and highlights a graduate’s dedication to his/her alma mater. The recipient of this award must have been awarded a degree, diploma or certificate from Tri-County; must have graduated at least one year ago and must have made significant contributions to the College, the Alumni Association or the community.

Nineteen years ago Kellie Smith Boone walked across the stage at the Anderson Civic Center and received her associate in arts degree at Tri-County Technical College’s spring commencement.

Since that day, she has worked in manufacturing facilities in Oconee County, beginning her career at Koyo Bearings in Walhalla, where she started as an operator in production and quickly moved up the ladder into human resources. She says her Tri-County degree paved the way.

Boone spent 16 years at Koyo - most recently as a human resources generalist until joining Horton’s team as human resources manager late last year. (Horton is Oconee County’s newest manufacturing facility.)

She always is pleased when she sees Tri-County on an applicant’s resume -- whether it’s an associate degree or the South Carolina Manufacturing Certification (SCMC). “Tri-County graduates will play a vital role in Horton’s success,” she said.

Horton’s proximity to the College’s Oconee Campus is a real plus, she said. “Tri-County will serve as a feeder for us. Tri-County and the Hamilton Career Center, currently under construction, are our partners in supplying future employees. It makes me smile that we are located so close to the campus.”

Horton and other industries are located in the Oconee Industry and Technology Park, located on Highway 11 in Westminster. It co-locates the Oconee Campus of Tri-County Technical College, the career center for high school students and industry. “We are excited about having a potential skilled workforce nearby,” she said.

As human resources manager, Boone is responsible for recruiting and hiring for all hourly and salaried positions, payroll and benefits, training and development and employee/public relations.

When seeking candidates for job openings, she says she looks for Tri-County Technical College when reviewing resumes. “I know what Tri-County graduates can do,” said Boone. “I’m proud I started at Tri-County.” Staying close to home was one of the reasons she chose Tri-County as an 18-year-old graduate of Walhalla High School.

An honor student in the top 10% of her class, Boone was awarded a full scholarship to the college of her choice. She and her mother began to visit colleges. “But when it was all said and done, I’m a small town girl. I was a little shy and Tri-County was down the road.

It was perfect for me. They offered a university transfer curriculum and small class size. I enrolled at Tri-County and stayed close to home. I don’t regret it at all,” she said.

She graduated from Tri-County debt free. She attended Tri-County on a Life scholarship and received an Abney Foundation scholarship. “I didn’t even pay for books,” she said. “I made the right decision. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t take the steps I did years ago,” she added.

At Koyo she quickly was promoted internally from second-shift operator to data processing clerk in the office. Koyo’s tuition reimbursement program paid for her bachelor’s degree in business administration which she earned at Limestone College (online) in 2012. “I was hired at age 20 because of my Tri-County degree,” she said. “I got my foot in the door and worked my way up,” she said. She encourages her associates to further their education at Tri-County.

“I want to invest in others and to pay it forward. If I make a difference in one life, then I have done my job.”

Boone and her husband, Greg, live in Seneca.

. TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , Gonfalons The five academic gonfalons on display represent the College and its four academic divisions.

Gonfalons, which are banners hung from crosspieces on poles, have been used since medieval times as symbols of state or office. The red and gold gonfalon with the official College Seal represents the institution as a whole. The gonfalons for the four academic divisions display the division names, the official Seal, and the colors associated with the academic disciplines of the divisions: Arts and Sciences – white, science gold; Business and Public Services – drab, peacock blue; Health Education – sage green, apricot; and Industrial and Engineering Technology – orange, science gold.

Mace The Tri-County Technical College Mace is carried by the president of the Faculty Senate, who leads the academic procession at commencement. Historically, the use of a mace dates back to the Middle Ages and was carried before or placed near a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. In commencement exercises, the mace specifically indicates the authority of the College President to award degrees. The College Mace is made of pecan and brass and depicts the official College Seal. It was designed and manufactured by students in the Engineering Graphics Technology Department.

Regalia Academic regalia worn by persons in the procession varies in style and color according to the highest degree earned.
