Robert and Megan Lewis

For as long as I can remember, my life has always revolved around the academic calendar, and backto-school time has always been my favorite time of the year. Having spent the majority of my life as a student and the last 15 years teaching writing in higher education, by the end of July, I find myself pining for the new school year — for a fresh start when I get to re-establish my routine, hit the books, quench my thirst for knowledge and share my passion for the written word with a new group of students.

This September is a little bittersweet for me because it’s the first time in over 30 years that I won’t be going back to school. As much as I will miss my students and my role as Dr. A., I’ve discovered that my interactions with all of you and the work that I am doing with the Real Producers team are equally rewarding and packed with so many opportunities to learn and grow.

about the real estate industry and — my favorite part of this job — shaping and sharing YOUR meaningful stories with the Real Producers community. In those stories, some of you have expressed that you didn’t initially plan on a career in real estate but that you ended up exactly where you were meant to be. I also didn’t envision that my path would lead to the pages of a magazine — or to the Oakland County real estate community — but I am certainly glad I found my way here. In this issue, we’re kicking off the start of the new school year by featuring YOUR learning goals in WAYA and debuting “Coach’s Corner,” a rotating, educational article written by a local contributor. Thank you to this month’s “coach,” Jessica Woodbeck, for sharing several great tips — and apps — for marketing with video. If you are interested in submitting an educational article for us to consider for “Coach’s Corner” in a future issue, email me at jane. asher@realproducersmag.com.

Instead of spending my summer composing my syllabus, preparing my lesson plans, and looking for ways to improve my teaching and shape engaging learning experiences for college freshmen, I’ve spent the last few months organizing our editorial calendar, managing content, learning 6 • September 2020

clients on my work ethic, marketing plan and intimate knowledge of all facets of my service area,” she said.

top producer

@realproducers

By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D. Photos by Jermaine Buie with Perfect Light, LLC

Over time, Emily’s approach served her well and resulted in a thriving business and a fulfilling career serving people and bolstering real estate prices in her community. More so, as a result of her strong work ethic, expansive client base and a multitude of referrals, Emily has a career volume of over $170 million, $27 million of which she generated in 2019. For the past seven years, Emily has earned the title of “Hour Detroit” Real Estate All-Star, and for the past 16 years, she has consistently been a top producer at her firm Morgan, Milzow & Ford, where she has acted as an associate broker since 2007. Additionally, in 2015, Emily was chosen among over 5,000 members as the single recipient of the North Oakland Board of REALTORS® Distinguished Service Award, and in 2019, Emily was named the Clarkston Community Business Person of the Year. She has been a board member of the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce since 2014 and served as its president from 2018 to 2019.

As a fourth-generation real estate agent, Emily Ford has real estate coursing through her veins. Thanks to her mother, Pam Ford Morgan — a longstanding top-producing agent and co-owner of Morgan & Milzow & Ford, REALTORS® — and Emily’s early experience working at Morgan & Milzow & Ford, she realized her passion for homes and for the business at a young age. Emily also realized that it takes a lot more than long-established family ties to generate one’s success in this business. “In real estate, like in life, you get what you give,” she said. realproducersmag.com

Emily became licensed in 1999, and after receiving her bachelor’s in economics from Kalamazoo College in 2002, she decided that her local knowledge, family’s experience and interpersonal skills best suited her for a full-time career in real estate. “Furthermore, I think real estate is one of the few careers that women can truly excel in in a variety of ways,” she said. After college, Emily became a project manager and salesperson for a 72-unit new-home development in Clarkston. Then, after two years of sales experience, she decided to make the leap and venture out on her own. Early on in her career, Emily recalls being one of only a few young agents in the industry, especially in North Oakland County, and having to compete for business against far more seasoned agents. “I sold

Emily is most passionate about her clients, and as a Clarkston native, she feels fortunate to work in her hometown among so many “clients who have become friends and friends who have become clients.” Emily has two licensed assistants who handle the administrative tasks and ensure transactions run smoothly, but she insists on working as a single agent because it’s fundamental to her personable approach to real estate. “My mantra is to be hands-on with the complicated and emotional parts of the process,” she said. “I often find myself sitting at people’s kitchen tables and discussing one of the most important financing decisions and transactions of their lives, and I want to be that person sitting at the table with my clients and having those poOakland County Real Producers • 19

tentially life-changing conversations with them.” It’s through these oneon-one encounters that Emily builds long-lasting relationships with her clients, and those relationships are personally gratifying in themselves, as well as a means for generating additional business. “In my opinion, there’s no better compliment than receiving referrals from past clients and from other agents and working with repeat clients,” Emily said. Emily attributes her amicability, servant mentality and strong work ethic to her “single biggest influence” in her life: her mother. “My mom has taught me so much about how to be of service to our clients, and, ultimately that’s the number one component that makes for a great real estate agent,” Emily said. She also says that the financial crash of 2008 was monumental in shaping her life and career because she had to adapt to a market where “distressed listings/sales outpaced private sales” and figure out how to thrive in a commission-based industry when homes were selling for cents on the dollar. By performing many broker price options and building relationships with bank asset managers and bankruptcy attorneys, Emily worked extremely hard to bolster and diversify her business, and, as a result of her dexterity, she continued to thrive in the industry. In her free time, Emily enjoys hanging out with her boyfriend, listening to all kinds of music, attending concerts, dining at new restaurants, sampling wines, exercising, lake living and paddleboarding in the summer months — she lives on Parke Lake and owns a rental property on Maceday Lake. In addition to her service to the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce, Emily is an ardent supporter of and donor to various local charities, including Habitat for Humanity, Tree of Dream and SCAMP, Clarkston’s “Special Camp for Special Kids.” In 2015 and 2016, Emily volunteered two of her homes for 20 • September 2020

the SCAMP Home Tour, which was one of the organization’s biggest fundraisers at the time. “This experience was poignant for me because SCAMP is a local cause near and dear to my heart coupled with the fact that real estate is my passion,” Emily said. “Unfortunately, SCAMP is no longer holding the annual home tour fundraiser, but many people loved the event for many years as it gave them a glimpse into homes they may have never been able to tour otherwise.” Throughout her career, Emily’s greatest takeaway is “there’s no substitute for hard work.” She also encourages up-and-coming agents to find a great

mentor who is willing to share their experience and expertise. “There is so much to learn and to know in order to be successful in this business, so, in addition to working hard, we must also be learning and adapting to the changes around us, as well as be ethical and professional with all parties in every transaction,” Emily said. “There’s no substitute for integrity in this business…and there’s no career more rewarding and exciting than real estate!” @realproducers

As part of Aaron’s team mentality, he often turns to his office group for their input on ways to improve work efficiency and client service. As a result, the agency added texting to their office phone, giving clients the ability to chat at their convenience. “As a team, we set weekly and monthly goals and then look at six-month periods,” Aaron explained. “We make it fun at our office and celebrate the small victories as we work toward something bigger.” Aaron’s years as an athlete taught him the value of encouragement, stamina, and optimism. “If you let the day-to-day activities become too stagnant, you will easily burn out from the monotony,” he said.

AARON BLAKEMORE Blakemore Insurance Agency, Michigan Farm Bureau

As a previous long-distance runner, Aaron Blakemore built his business with a similar mindset as training for a marathon: He sets a goal, pushes himself every day and looks for ways to improve his performance. Additionally, he surrounds himself with accountability partners who are like-minded — each sharing a common goal and encouraging each other to be their absolute best. Aaron, owner of Blakemore Insurance Agency, Michigan Farm Bureau, differentiates his business by providing exceptional service before, during and especially after a sale. “We work hard to reach out to our clients and offer policy reviews to keep pace with their busy lives — often changing the 24 • September 2020

way they’re protected,” Aaron shared. “Over time, people’s lives and circumstances change. I feel it is our job to be their guide and offer solutions along the way. I think this is what has led to our high referral rate.” Aaron believes how he treats others — clients, non-clients and referral sources — is a direct reflection of what will come back to him. He refers to this as “business karma” and has established dozens of trusted relationships because of it. “I am as transparent as I can be in each transaction,” he said. “I’ve had conversations where another provider is offering someone an appropriate policy — maybe even slightly better than what we could offer — and I will be honest about that. Aaron’s client portfolio ranges from homes on Torch Lake — providing coverage for docks, sea walls and boat hoists — to clients in Highland who have horses with riding arenas. “These are not standard subdivision-style homes; therefore, they do not deserve a standard subdivision-style policy,” Aaron said. “We can customize a package to fit our customers’ needs, while also educating them on the importance of their coverage.”

When Aaron began his career, he was faxing and emailing items. Today, he uses Docu-Sign and texting to stay current with his clients’ needs for better communications. Currently, Aaron’s group is preparing for one of the biggest changes in Michigan’s No-Fault Auto Insurance laws since the early 1970s. “We have been reaching out to our clients to discuss how this

They live near Kensington Park in Milford, and together they spend time reveling in outdoor activities. Furthermore, Aaron is a volunteer coach and an agency sponsor for the Huron Valley United Mountain Bike Racing Team — his son Jacob is also a team member. The company was started over 20 years ago by Ron Berry who retired in December 2018. Since that time, they have added more licensed agents and continue to grow. “I believe success is when you are personally comfortable with what you have accomplished,” Aaron shared. “While I have always set goals and worked toward them, I also know how important it is to reflect on all my past accomplishments. However, I won’t let prior success get in the way of the goals still ahead of me.”

Fall brings us a symphony of delights: colorful crunchy leaves, perfectly crisp air, pumpkin-spice everything. But the same plunging temps that inspire cozy evenings around the fire pit are ones that push us indoors and close to one another… which has taken on a whole new meaning this year, in particular. Add in the many businesses, workplaces, and schools reopening, circulating and recirculating germs of all kinds, and how clean and disinfected we’re keeping our homes becomes critical. As we now know, COVID-19 is transmitted by viral saliva droplets in the air and on surfaces, as are other common cool-weather ailments like colds, flu, and strep. Some viruses can live on surfaces for days at a time, depending on humidity, temperature, and surface material. What decontamination steps can we take to keep our homes and bodies healthy this season?

realproducersmag.com

High-touch surfaces

Bedrooms

• Think phones, remotes, doorknobs, faucets, light switches, keyboards, etc. Wipe these down with disinfectant weekly and more often when someone is sick or your house has guests. • Remove shoes at the doorway, so they don’t track in illness-causing germs.

• Bed linens: Wash sheets at least weekly and more often when someone is sick.

Bathrooms

• Towels: Wash bath towels at least weekly and after every use if someone is sick. Change hand towels every few days and every time you have guests. • Toilets and faucets: Sanitize your toilet bowl, handle, and sink / tub faucets weekly. Be sure to put the lid down when you flush, as flushing can spread fecal matter and germs all over your bathroom.

Kitchen

• Kitchen sink: The kitchen sink is a cesspool of germs and bacteria, so disinfect it every day. You can also pop your sponge in the microwave for two minutes to zap any lingering E. coli and salmonella. • Counters: Avoid putting germ-harboring items from the outside, such as purses, reusable grocery bags, or mail, in your food-preparation space. Be sure to clean counters with hot water first to remove dried food and then sanitize the area and let air-dry.

@realproducers

Four years ago, Kyle Desmond was at a crossroads with his career. He and his wife, Lyndsey, were also expecting their second child. With 14 years of sales experience and a desire to have his own business, Kyle was ready to make a career change that would support his growing family and fulfill his dream of entrepreneurship while helping others.

Real estate was a natural fit for Kyle as it was something he had often thought about but hadn’t yet pursued. “I was ready for a change,” Kyle recalled. “I made a list of careers that were compatible with my background as well as something that would allow me the flexibility to design my own business and set my own schedule — needless to say, real estate was at the top of my list.” Today, Kyle is a licensed real estate agent at Hall & Hunter Realtors with a career volume over $28 million. He has been recognized as an “Hour Detroit” Real Estate All-Star, a top producer in Oakland County and a rising star at Hall & Hunter. Kyle shared how grateful he is for the relationships that his real estate business has given him. “I make it a priority to help my clients every step of the way,” he said. “It is so rewarding when realproducersmag.com

clients become friends long after the sales transaction is complete.” Additionally, Kyle values the friendships he finds within his office, among other agents and alongside his business partners. Kyle goes to great lengths to treat every client as if they are family — an important character trait he learned from his father. As a young boy, Kyle watched his dad run the family business — AJ Desmond and Sons Funeral Home — and serve within their community. “My dad had a huge influence on me,” Kyle shared. “I watched how he made a lasting impact on people through his care and service. That was, and still is, very inspirational to me.” Kyle continues his dad’s legacy in his real estate career with his attention to client service and loyalty to those around him. “I am present in everything I do, which keeps me focused and gives me the opportunity to listen. By doing this, I pay attention to details, I work smarter and it gives me the stamina that this business requires.” Oakland County Real Producers • 29

Given his quick rise to success, Kyle offers up-and-coming agents some advice. “Be ready to grind,” he suggested. “This business is a 12-months-a-year job that never quits. If you make yourself available and concentrate on the people you know and those relationships, your business will thrive.”

behind-the-scenes all-star

when needed. Joe also appreciates that Chris understands where The Delia Team is headed and how well he aligns with their mission.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, about your job or about your relationship with the person who nominated you?

Do you work with someone who truly makes a difference in the industry, in your business or at your office? Email Terra Csotty at terra.csotty@realproducersmag.com to nominate them to be featured as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star in an upcoming issue.

day. I also work closely with our director of operations on future events, marketing materials, etc., and support all of the new agent onboarding. How would you describe your job in one word?

Progressing.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

People and person-to-person interactions are always a great opportunity to grow. In agent-to-client and agent-to-admin interactions, as long as we all pull in the same direction, it runs forward, if not always smoothly. My challenge in regard to this is that I am physically located in Grand Rapids while the rest of our hub is in the Rochester/Detroit area.

Why do you think you excel at your job? What did you do before you began working in your current position?

I was formerly a director of operations for another real estate team. My background is in the military, the Marine Corps and the Army. What does your typical workday look like?

Business/lead generation and technology — I manage everything from lead flow, lead conversion into clients and the systems that enable that smooth transition. I manage Facebook, lead flow, and CRM reports and talk with our sales team almost every 32 • September 2020

Some people do a thing because they are good at it. Some people do a thing because they enjoy it or enjoy working on it. I do this thing because I must. I feel a drive to make a lasting impact on a business, on how business is done, and on how information and clients flow through our business…and, more importantly, on how our agents flow through the lives of our clients.

What is one thing about you that others might find surprising or interesting?

I can ride a unicycle with above-average skill. When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

Working with Joe and Renee has been the highlight of my professional career. I didn’t think I would find this level of trust and empowerment outside of the military. Additionally, I work remotely, which is uncommon in my field, but, on day one, I embraced the risks associated with this situation. I am grateful to work with Joe and Renee and the rest of the Delia Group. I look forward to “work” almost every day because it doesn’t really feel like work.

Joe Delia, owner of The Delia Group at Keller Williams Paint Creek, says that Chris is committed to and immersed in the business. “Chris understands how everything connects and the dominos that fall when we move a new process in or remove a process,” Joe said. “He lifts up everyone within KW, not just The Delia Group.” Joe describes Chris as a person who goes above and beyond: At any time, Chris is quick to jump in and fix warranted situations and fill in the gaps

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

How do you feel about being nominated as a Behind-the-Scenes All-Star?

I am valued. I am empowered. I can affect change on a large scale. My family time is protected. I want to log into work every day.

The Deadly Sins of

Retirement Planning By Shauna Osborne

A hot topic in financial media over the last few years has been the “retirement crisis” currently facing Americans. Workers – baby boomers, in particular – are retiring at higher numbers yet are living longer lives than ever, due to advances in modern medicine. Longer, healthier lives sound like a positive, but fears surrounding whether Social Security will go bankrupt persist, not to mention a shaky post-pandemic financial landscape. More alarmingly, according to Forbes, one in five American adults have nothing saved for retirement. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to keep your retirement finances secure by avoiding these “deadly sins” of retirement planning.

Undoubtedly, you are capable of handling the basics of retirement planning, but don’t be too proud to PRIDE enlist the assistance of professionals to select the investments that best suit your individual goals. Just as you are an expert in your field, financial professionals have the education and training to handle difficult areas, such as asset allocation and portfolio diversification, with aplomb, ensuring you have a secure long-term portfolio and comfortable retirement. It’s difficult watching your paycheck dwindle as funds get deducted for retirement, healthcare, etc., GREED but saving for retirement will benefit you more in the long run. Invest in your future by at least matching your employer’s contribution, if offered, and revisiting your deferral amounts when you earn a raise or bonus. Also, make sure your retirement planning goals are realistic. Don’t set your sights on what you can’t have out of avarice. Laziness is never beneficial in investing and retirement planning. Most Americans don’t SLOTH review their retirement options and related tax implications adequately. Double-check retirement statements regularly to ensure deduction amounts are correct and match your pay stub, and keep an eye on accounts, even in retirement.

THWAITES ROSS MORTGAGE CORPORATION A LENDER FOR LIFE After graduating from Central Michigan University in 2002, Toni Thwaites took a year to figure out her career path. She accepted a position at a mortgage company where she could learn about the business and the intricacies of originating mortgages. Seventeen years later, with countless transactions and a portfolio full of repeat clients, Toni has successfully built a career in the mortgage industry.

Since that time, Toni has worked for several different mortgage companies, learning the basic principles of the business and establishing relationships and a name for herself. Today, she is the branch manager for Ross Mortgage Corporation in Birmingham. “I have a strong loyalty to Ross,” Toni shared. “I relate to the ethics and morals of the company along with the amazing teamwork mentality.” When Toni was asked to open the Birmingham branch, she jumped at the opportunity. “I was thrilled to be a part of the milestone opening,” she said. “As a resident of Birmingham, I am familiar with the people, the community and the real estate agents — it’s a location that’s near and dear to my heart.” With the understanding that people tend to do business with others they respect, Toni brings a personal touch to her transactions. “I take the time to 44 • September 2020

As a beacon through the mortgage process, Toni looks forward to many more years of helping others during the most exciting time of their lives. “Buying a home is probably the biggest transaction of a person’s life,” Toni said. “I will continue to be an advocate for my clients and real estate partners. Later in their careers, Alyse and Candice formed The Robertelli Team, an equal partnership centered on teamwork, relationships and community. With a career volume of $120 million, over $18 million of which they generated in 2019, Alyse and Candice are proud of being the number two agents in their office based on sales volume. They also pride themselves on being young, innovative and technology-driven “pretty likable people.”

Best Friends Building a Relationship-Based Business

@realproducers

In 2002, newly licensed agent Alyse Robertelli met administrative assistant Candice Van Slembrouck while they were working together at Real Estate One, and they instantly formed a strong connection that would go on to shape their personal and professional paths for years to come. Now, almost two decades later, Alyse and Candice’s charismatic bond is the driving force behind The Robertelli Team at Max Broock REALTORS®. As lead partners of their team, Alyse and Candice have leveraged their skills and their friendship to thrive in the relationshipbased business of real estate. realproducersmag.com

“One out of two marriages ends in divorce,” Alyse said. “As work wives and best friends for many years, we beat the odds and are still going strong! Being able to work with your best friend on a daily basis and to accomplish your goals together is an awesome and rewarding experience.”

“Every day, we work with ‘plus 10’ attitudes and smiling faces,” Candice said. “We set ourselves apart in a competitive industry with our builder relationship/third party marketing services. This gives us an advantage to leverage our marketing degrees and new construction sales experience.” Alyse and Candice have been designated as 2016-2019 “Hour Detroit” Real Estate All-Stars and Real Estate One 2019 President Club recipients as well as nationally ranked as

top 1% real estate agents. Additionally, The Robertelli Team makes a habit of giving back by donating a percentage of each sale to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. They also host an annual event to fundraise for several charities, and the Real Estate One Foundation matches their fundraising efforts. At the end of 2019 — their best year to date as a two-person team — Alyse and Candice brought on two new team members: REALTOR® Lauren Salome and Director of Operations Deborah Hughson. Lauren comes from a family of real estate developers/builders and brings her years of knowledge to the team’s growing portfolio of third-party marketing for builders. Deborah, who has years of experience as a licensed agent, knows the ins and outs of the industry. Deborah’s top priority is overseeing the team’s transactions to ensure their clients receive “a top-notch experience” founded on stellar customer service. “We all work together to make house shopping fun and selling seamless,” Alyse said. “From helping our clients get their homes ready to market to impressive marketing materials

Early on in their friendship, Alyse was recruited by a developer and was offered a position as an on-site sales manager for new construction sales. Alyse was interested in the position but also adamant about bringing her own assistant with her because she knew that she and Candice would make a great Oakland County Real Producers • 47

and strong negotiating, we have found our recipe for success!” The success of The Robertelli team materializes from Alyse and Candice’s shared values and skills: They both are passionate and driven businesswomen with strong problem-solving, organizational and interpersonal skills. Like most successful business partners, Alyse and Candice bring different strengths to their team. Candice, who is more type A, focuses on data and analytics. “My mindset is trackability,” she said. “I analyze where our clients come from, how we gain new client relationships, our annual business growth and the quality of our service.” Alyse, who is more type B, is the creative negotiator and strong closer. “Candice likes a stand-up desk, while I prefer to sit down — JK, but it is the truth!” Alyse said. “I admire Candice’s dedication to our clients and how she is an overachiever.” “I admire Alyse’s ability to manage a successful business, motherhood and social life,” Candice said. “As the mother on the team, she tends to provide lunches!” 48 • September 2020

Alyse and her husband Kevin Robertelli reside in Bloomfield Hills with their two daughters, Sloane, 8, and Harper, 3. Alyse appreciates having a flexible schedule that allows her to attend her children’s school events. She enjoys family vacations — especially trips up North and to Florida — hosting pool parties at her home with family and friends, reading novels — as long as they don’t make her cry — listening to pop and classic rock and watching ‘80s movies. Candice and her husband Doug Van Slembrouck, who she met on an Amtrak train, live in downtown Rochester with Lilly, their Silk Terrier. Candice and Doug are adventurous and outdoorsy; they enjoy hiking, biking and traveling near and far. They recently purchased a cottage in Au Gres, Michigan, and are in the midst of a large renovation project. Candice is a big fan of Nicholas Sparks books and movies and describes herself as “a sucker for a love story.” She also enjoys all genres of music. Candice grew up in Farmington and earned a marketing degree from Westwood College in Chicago. Candice names her mother, Penny Jones — a single-parent who worked two jobs— as her most influential role model and greatest inspiration in life. “My mother showed me how to be a strong, smart, confident, motivated and independent woman,” Candice said. Alyse, who grew up in West Bloomfield and graduated with a marketing degree from Michigan State University, has always looked to her grandfather, who is now 94 years old, for guidance

and inspiration. “My grandfather has been a real estate investor throughout his life and has inspired me to follow my dreams and encouraged me to be the best I can be,” Alyse said. Alyse and Candice depend on one another in life and in business. The longevity and strength of their relationship — as both best friends and esteemed partners — is founded on their shared work ethic and is sustained by their commitment to communicate with and understand one another. “My advice to others who may be considering partnering up is to find someone you are comfortable being with on a day-to-day basis, someone whose business structures align with yours and someone with whom you can openly communicate throughout your business venture — discuss each other’s strengths and weaknesses and how you can help improve,” Candice said. “When you work with someone else as closely as we do, we find ourselves finishing each other’s sentences and knowing what the other one is thinking!” Alyse said. @realproducers

As every store ad is proclaiming, it’s back-toschool time. With the summer’s end, many of the youngest members of our communities are faced with re-entering the classroom – whatever that might look like. The uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and its aftermath, as much as parents and teachers have worked to ensure their safety, can compound the often already-stressful nature of the academic experience. How can we empower our children to manage these pressures healthily?

mitments, and keep bedrooms dark, quiet, and screen-free, if possible. Don’t overschedule.

After having huge blocks of downtime this summer, it will be important not to push kids to instantly jump back into the go-go-go lifestyle we may have once known. While regaining a sense of normalcy by returning to beloved extracurriculars is encouraged, ensure kids have enough unstructured time to play and rest their bodies and minds. Be a good listener.

The first step here is being observant. Parents know their kids better than anyone, so they are best qualified to assess through monitoring mood and behavior whether their children may be struggling. Studies show low levels of parental communication and involvement have been associated with poor decision-making in children and teens. They need to know they can talk to their trusted adults about any problems they are having, openly and fully.

Make bedtime a priority.

Now, more than ever, it is crucial that kids and teens are well-rested for the school day, as we know quality sleep plays a role in boosting everything from academic performance to mood and the immune system. Experts recommend nine to 12 hours of sleep for 6- to 12-year-olds and eight to 10 hours for teens. Help kids prioritize restfulness by creating an environment that facilitates it – avoid late-evening com-

Manage your own stress / Model healthy coping.

High levels of stress can be contagious and toxic in a household, so even when high-stress situations (like a pandemic) can’t be avoided, we can model healthy coping behaviors, such as prioritizing self-care and taking deep breaths or a walk outside, to help kids see their adults are okay, even when things are hectic.

AL

Abdallah For 23 years, AL has established a unique rhythm to his real estate business. He is an extremely service-driven agent who prides himself on getting his buyers and sellers what they want for the price they want. “I don’t like losing and failure only makes me work harder to succeed,” AL explained. “I am so service-driven that sometimes I find it hard to ‘clock-out’ from my work — but I know if I provide great service, I will get great results.”

SERVICE AND RESULTS WITHOUT SKIPPING A BEAT

AL’s brother, Dave, helped sell their parents’ home and soon after went into real estate for himself. Inspired by his brother’s success, AL was motivated to also become a real estate agent and pursue his own dreams of entrepreneurship and having more control over his income. “I wanted to create my own destiny,” AL said. “I am also drawn to helping others — there’s no greater satisfaction than helping people accomplish their dreams.”

AL Abdallah is a REALTOR® who marches to the beat of his own drum. He has proven himself as an award-winning real estate agent known for his impeccable client service. He managed his parents’ deli restaurant and is an accomplished professional drummer who has traveled the world.

of mentoring others and providing support and encouragement to a group. Through his daily and weekly collaboration classes, AL offers advice and idea sessions to fellow real estate professionals. “I believe life is all about giving and taking — not just taking,” AL said. “If you give, you get.” AL also offers real estate tips and suggestions on social media. “I love helping good agents turn into mega producers,” he shared. “I am an advocate for agents finding their own voice in real estate; helping others be better than me — rather than imitate me — is a legacy I want to be remembered for.” Social media plays an important role in AL’s marketing, recruiting, referrals and client testimonials. “The most rewarding part of my business is when my clients post a video testimonial about my service,” AL said. AL’s website, www.ALsellsIT.com, is a comprehensive resource for future and current

clients as well as for other real estate agents. His YouTube videos offer easy-to-understand real estate advice and best business practice knowledge. AL was born in Lebanon and came to the United States with his family at the age of 2. He has been married to his wife, Rola, for 20 years. Their son — Hussein, 18 — is in college, and their daughter — Evana, 13 — is in middle school. Together, they enjoy playing basketball, volleyball, snow and water skiing, and summer days on their boat. AL manages AL Abdallah TEAM International and closed more than 120 transactions last year. He is an independent agent at eXp Realty and is currently working on expanding his business by adding agents locally, nationally and even internationally. He views himself as a hunter versus a fisherman, saying, “I love to look for business and not wait for it.” AL’s slogan is “great service and great results” — a motto worthy of a standing ovation.
