elly A. Matelic discovered her passion for sales and for helping clients with one of the happiest purchases of their lives at a very large bridal salon in Dearborn. Then, after spending several years thriving in the bridal business — and selling thousands of dresses — Kelly learned that the store was closing and that she’d soon be out of a job that she had grown to love.
“It was so sad — I was absolutely devastated,” she shared. “During those final days as clients were picking up their stuff from our store, one of the customers asked, ‘What’s next for you?’ and I realized that I hadn’t yet figured out my next move.” Fortunately, that same customer offered Kelly a job at his mortgage company. Later that evening, Kelly, who was excited about the prospect of paving a new path for herself in the mortgage
industry, called her brother Brian Matelic, who also happens to be a top-producing real estate agent. She asked Brian if he’d be willing to refer his clients to her, but instead of agreeing to do so, he asked her, “Why don’t you sell houses?” That simple question sparked the start of Kelly’s real estate career. Prior to that moment, the thought of selling real estate hadn’t crossed Kelly’s mind, but Brian assured her that he had enough business for the both of them, so Kelly took the real estate class, passed the test and became her brother’s buyer’s agent at RE/MAX Team 2000. “My first weekend in the business I sold five houses — it was insane. I couldn’t believe I was able to make my own schedule and help people with the biggest purchase in ife. ... How exciting!” she said. “Losing my job at the bridal salon was horrible, but it led me to the person I have become today. If I didn’t lose that job, I probably would not be a real estate agent because I really loved helping brides.” Kelly is so thankful that her brother encouraged her to join the industry because her new career in real estate confirmed what she had known all along: Kelly was a salesperson through and through. “I feel you’re either born with it or not, and I knew I was born to do sales,” she shared. “I started selling bridal gowns, and after marriage, buying a house is usually the next big step for most people — it just made sense for me to sell houses. Plus, my mom loved houses and loved to move; I think she may have been a real estate agent in her prior life,” Kelly said. Now with over 20 years in the industry, a career volume of over $141 million, more than 1,300 houses sold, hundreds of five-star Zillow reviews, Kelly has not only built a thriving business, she has also discovered the joy of “making people’s dreams come true” through real estate. “Everyone wants homeownership, and I help their dreams become a reality,” Kelly said. “How great is it to help families get into houses and watch those families grow? Most of my clients become friends. I go to weddings, graduations, baby showers, housewarming parties, barbecues, dinners and countless other events — I love it.” Shortly after Kelly married her best friend, John Medrek, in 2008, John left the transportation industry, received his real estate license and teamed up with Kelly to form Spouses Selling Houses with Park Avenue Realty in Allen Park. “I’m so appreciative of the business that we have and the relationship we have built. My husband and I make a great team,” Kelly said. “We spend a lot of time together and do everything together — it can be challenging some days, but, for the most part, we work it out.” Kelly and John also have two dogs, Buddy and Marley, who they jokingly refer to as their office secretary and office assistant.

she said. “Decorating is a huge passion for me, and I’m lucky because it comes naturally. I love to re-do spaces and transform houses into showpieces. ... Drives my husband crazy.” One of Kelly’s favorite ways to spend her free time is shopping, and, fortunately, John enjoys a trip to the mall as much as Kelly does. “I always say, ‘I work for purses and jewelry,’” she said, laughing. “John also loves going to his cabin up north where he can get away and hunt — that’s fun for him, but I’m a city girl. So, it gives us nice breaks.” Even though Kelly jokes about how real estate funds her favorite pastime, anyone who works with Kelly knows that her financial needs ultimately take a back seat to ensuring that her clients make informed decisions and achieve the best results. “At the end of the day, it’s not about the sale; it’s about providing the best service I possibly can and doing what’s best for my client,” she said. “I think going the extra mile speaks volumes, and honesty is always the best policy. Real success is helping people change their lives. It’s all about building relationships and fulfilling dreams.” For Kelly, that dream is to shape Spouses Selling Houses into a longstanding legacy. “I know I will be the 85-year-old lady with a cane showing houses until the end of time. I don’t think of retiring — I want to help my clients’ kids buy their first home,” she shared. “The only thing that comes to sleepers is dreams. You got to get up and make things happen.”
“We pride ourselves on integrity, accountability, communication and loyalty,” Kelly said. “My clients speak with me from beginning to end — that way I’m the accountable party, and my clients are my top priority. This business has made me into a problem-solver and a firefighter. I will not take no for an answer, ever. I will always look for a solution.” Kelly makes a habit out of informing sellers about ways they can increase the appeal of their homes so that they can maximize the value of their investment without breaking the bank. She’s also quick to help her clients find the right person to tackle their home improvement needs, and, when her clients are in a crunch, Kelly is happy to lend a helping hand with everything from cleaning to trimming bushes to home staging. “I do not let people wait. I don’t care what I’m doing — I always put my client first,” realproducersmag.com

WOLVERTON CONSTRUCTION & DEVELOPMENT partner spotlight By Robbyn Moore Photos by Jennifer Arnett with Starloft Photography
Construction Built on a Lifetime of Inspiration
From job to job — to the people he works with to the customers and contractors — Christopher (Chris) Wolverton has put the highest value on fostering lasting relationships. As the owner of Wolverton Construction & Development, Chris looked up to and was greatly influenced by his father — a handyman who tirelessly constructed kitchens, installed cabinets and worked on various other home improvement projects. “I grew up with construction at the center of my life,” Chris recalled. “At an early age, I began working with my father, assisting him with tasks — everything from helping him cut materials to holding cabinets during installs. Because of him, I pretty much always knew I would be going into the trades.”
After high school, Chris became an electrician. However, four years later, he was ready to get back into home remodeling, and in 2008, he started his own company. Wolverton Construction is a family-owned, full-service residential construction and general contracting company that specializes in kitchens, bathrooms and basements. Beyond their impeccable attention to detail and professionalism, their highest priority is the customer. “We treat our customers like family,” Chris said. “There is a level of trust that’s established right from the very beginning. I respect the space that we’re invited into and

make it my mission to develop a personal relationship with my customers, which, in turn, makes the whole process a joy.” With nearly 14 years in the business, the company’s growth is mainly due to its solid referrals. “We are a good company, plain and simple,” Chris explained. “We execute high-end, custom work while keeping in constant communication with our customers; there’s always full transparency in every conversation from start to finish.” When the construction team is working on a job, they’re typically taking an area and making it better in every way. “I love that we are creating something, making it more attractive, functional, safer — whatever it may be to put a smile on people’s faces,” Chris said. One of the biggest changes Chris has noticed in the industry is the influence of social media. “People can talk to a group of others that they don’t even know and recommend companies through past experiences,” he said. “This has been huge for us on so many levels. Apps such as Nextdoor function as a hub for neighbors to collect and share information on goods and services in their area. As a result, we have benefited because trusted referrals come to us through this platform.” Chris also said Pinterest is another great application that makes it easier for customers to show his team exactly what they want, taking the guesswork out of most projects. When Chris isn’t working, he spends a great deal of time at home with his wife, Jacqueline, and their daughter,

Gracyn, and newborn son, Wyatt. They live on a 10-acre hobby farm, where they enjoy taking care of their goats, chickens, bees, a donkey and two dogs, Wilson and Ammo. Chris defines success as simply finding joy in everyday living. “Being successful in business means turning profits and leaving customers happy; however, complete success, to me, is providing for my family and being able to enjoy time with them as much as possible,” Chris shared. As a young man, Chris learned the importance of the trades, the value of relationships between people and the importance of teaching the trades to younger generations. “I think it’s important for kids to look up to their parents who work in these fields, and learn that not every child has to go college or become a doctor or a lawyer,” he said. “More importantly, the message to kids should be that they can still make something of themselves, even if the college route is not for them.” Chris’s deep-rooted passion for inspiring young kids as skilled workers motivated him to write a series of children’s books, each focusing on an electrician, a plumber, a carpenter, a roofer and a painter, which are now available on Amazon. “As a result of my father’s influence on me, I wrote these books based on personal experience,” Chris said. Currently, his writings include the My Hero Series, which is part of the Hard Hat Heroes collection. “I think it is important to truly care about what you do,” Chris concluded. “At Wolverton Construction, that starts way before we even first enter a home to measure or put together a quote.” For more information about Wolverton Construction & Development, visit wolvertonconstructionllc.com.

AN MA rising star
By Robbyn Moore Photos by Tracie Seeley with Downriver Real Estate Photography Photos taken at Cranbrook Custom Homes — Montcaret in Northville
TAKING A RISK AND FINDING THE REWARD Passionate about sales and the real estate industry, Anthony Maisano pursued his dream of becoming a real estate agent after he earned his bachelor’s degree in finance with a concentration in real estate. Prior to launching his business, Anthony had various jobs but never fully found the opportunities he needed to create the life he knew he deserved. For years, he worked at Ford Motor Company on the assembly line, followed by a brief time at Discount Tire. He also worked as a customer service manager for a horse and leather care company, and soon after, he spent seven years working with his step-family at their excavating business while also completing his college education.

@realproducers
THONY AISANO “To achieve success, there is usually some level of risk and sacrifice,” Anthony explained. “I’ve never been afraid of taking risks because, typically, it pays off in the end to take chances on yourself. I have always believed in myself, and in my search to find my current occupation, I pressed forward, knowing that all my previous jobs were stepping stones to get me where I am today.”
Anthony also found success in listening to his own voice and following his instincts. “Just because someone has done something in a certain way for years doesn’t mean you can’t be successful doing things your own way,” he said. “There’s value in listening to your gut, especially when it’s coupled with hard work and uncompromising ethics.”
In just three years, Anthony has built his career and has established lasting relationships with his clients through his work at eXp Realty in Plymouth. His career volume totals more than $15 million — $4.5 million of which was achieved last year. Anthony is also a member of the Grosse Pointe Board of REALTORS®. “Given that I had no experience other than an education and a passion for the industry, I had to work hard and be very persistent to get ahead,” Anthony said. “Growing up, I watched other members of my family find success through self-employment; their achievements influenced and motivated me to find the same professional independence.” Throughout his life, Anthony would often buy and sell vehicles, which developed his passion and confidence in sales. “I turned a parttime hobby into a real estate career that has allowed me to work for myself and create my own life — on my own terms — while continuously learning and growing within the industry,” he shared.
realproducersmag.com
Wayne County Real Producers • 23
Anthony first entered the marketplace in 2018, and like most new agents, he was met with the challenges of finding and keeping consistent business, and getting his sales to the closing table. “As I grew, I began to find innovative ways to bring in new clients on a consistent basis,” he said. “With time and persistence — and an open mind to learning — things got better. I also learned what worked for me and what didn’t. In doing so, I found my own business style that brought value to new and existing clients, which translated into solid relationships built on authenticity and trust.” Currently, Anthony’s main focus is helping his clients get into a home they love while learning more and more every day. “As my workload continues to grow, I would like to someday start my own team to better serve my clients,” he said. Beyond that, Anthony hopes to own and operate
multifamily units and commercial space, as well as continue in the residential sales with a team of top-performing agents. When it comes to family, there’s never a dull moment in Anthony’s life. His large family includes his brother, Dominic, two half-brothers Gino and Chris, and five step-siblings: Kate, Marlena, Olivia, John and Daniel. Anthony is grateful he took a chance on himself to pursue his dream in real estate. “My advice to others considering a profession in real estate is to stick with it, learn as much as you can and take risks,” he said. “I never allowed myself to have excuses, and I always continued to push myself forward, even when I was unsure. And above all else, keep a positive mindset and attitude; it will go a long way.”
I’VE NEVER BEEN AFRAID OF TAKING RISKS BECAUSE, TYPICALLY, IT PAYS OFF IN THE END TO TAKE CHANCES ON YOURSELF.

Recent world events have brought to light the many faces of everyday heroes: healthcare workers, police officers and even teachers. Adding to these wonderful heroes are military veterans who live in our communities. As a way to give back to the many brave men and women who have sacrificed their time, energy and lives, Sherri Gramlich aligned herself with Downriver for Veterans (DFV). At the same time, she also launched her real estate career. Sherri provides support through personal contributions, volunteer work and 10% of her real estate commissions when she works with veterans.
With a passion for real estate and an allegiance to the military, Sherri found an opportunity where she could combine the two together and make a difference in her community. Along with her daughter and son-in-law,
realproducersmag.com
Sherri is a three-year veteran who strongly believes in helping to improve the lives of other veterans and their families in the downriver area. She provides assistance with cleaning and stocking kitchens, and shopping for clothing and school items for veteran families. She is a resource for local real estate support and, with the help of Downriver for Veterans, aids in connecting veterans who need help with closing costs. Additionally, Sherri personally donated a car to assist a local veteran with transportation needs. Sherri’s parents raised her to treat people the way she wanted to be treated. As a result, this later became her basic business model as an associate broker with eXp Realty. Moreover, Sherri took that mentality a step further by focusing on families and treating other families the way she would want her own to be treated. “If I do business honestly and ethically, my referrals will always be there, and my clients will remember the experience for years to come,” she said. At one point in Sherri’s life, she was a single mom raising four daughters. “I had a hard time financially and emotionally,” Sherri recalled. “There wasn’t an organization like DFV to offer support or assistance, so I worked my tail off to keep things afloat; I was very fortunate.” Sherri’s personal experiences as a parent and a veteran inspired her to find a way to give back and support others who may be going through similar situations. “While many people do work hard, sometimes there aren’t enough resources to make ends meet,” she added. “Having an extra meal or a home repair is oftentimes the supplementary need that makes life a little bit easier.”

With so many veterans and their families suffering and needing assistance with basic essentials such as food and clothing or home improvements, Sherri’s efforts are having an impact on her life and others. “A veteran gave their all for our well-being and should not suffer,” she said. “They deserve to get assistance when they are in need. I believe that every little bit makes a huge difference. I know that because I, myself, proudly served my country, and I needed extra help at times. Our local veterans don’t have much for resources; DFV helps to provide everything from food to PTSD support.” In 2019, Sherri fused together her appreciation for her real estate clients and advocacy for DFV by hosting a client appreciation dinner. She invited her clients and their families — many of whom are veterans — for an evening of fun and celebration. Gift baskets were donated and raffled to guests in attendance. The money raised was donated to the organization, and the dinner was personally paid for by Sherri.
or surprised them with a gift of a roof, a ramp or a stocked kitchen.” Sherri said the genuine appreciation is priceless. Recently, Sherri and her brother — also a veteran — arranged for a van to take veterans struggling with PTSD to a local farm. “As a group, we took a field trip and allowed the veterans to care for the animals,” Sherri said. “Sometimes, just a simple act of kindness can have the biggest impact.” In both her real estate work and her commitment to helping veterans, Sherri has led by example. “I follow my heart and let what’s important guide me,” she said. “I stay true to myself while working hard to be authentic in my actions and dedicated to my relationships. I believe if I’m helping with a pure heart, my efforts will be noted and respected.” For more information on how to get involved or to support Downriver for Veterans, go to downriverforveterans.org.
“The benefit dinner was an opportunity to celebrate my clients and honor veterans while raising funds and awareness for a cause I believe in very deeply,” Sherri said. “Beyond a wonderful evening of fun, I think the event was successful because my clients are like family, and they know our relationship doesn’t stop at the end of a sale.” In 2021, Sherri was working with a buyer, and before they had a house under contract, the buyer — a U.S. Air Force veteran and mother to a 2-year-old daughter — found out that her cancer had returned for the fourth time. “She had over 22 tumors in her brain, and cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and spine. I was heartbroken for her,” Sherri said. “I knew I couldn’t do anything to help her get better, so I decided to hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to alleviate some of her financial burden.” Through the donations of local businesses and Downriver for Veterans, 100% of the proceeds from the spaghetti dinner fundraiser — over $11,000 — went to the veteran’s family to assist with medical and daycare costs. The greatest satisfaction for Sherri is seeing the results of her efforts and the impact it has on veteran families. “When kids get a new winter coat and I see their smiling faces, it brings me such joy,” Sherri said. “Similarly, I find great satisfaction knowing DFV put smiles on their parents’ faces because we were able to assist with items they might not have afforded on their own 30 • November 2021

PAUL ARMSTRONG A BUSINESS BUILT ON GROWTH, SERVICE AND AUTHENTICITY
34 • November 2021
@realproducers
Since the age of 13, Paul Armstrong has understood the value of hard work. His first job was on a farm where he worked seasonally for four years. “Learning how to break the hard soil and remove weeds from crops for eight to 10 hours a day showed me that hard work is important in order for anything to grow,” he said. In his pursuit of happiness and self-growth, Paul revealed the best version of himself and discovered that he is happiest while helping others succeed.
After years as a bar manager and bartender, Paul understood the processes of running a restaurant and keeping people happy, and hoped to one day own his own bar and grill. It was around this time that he bought a house and
became very interested in real estate. As a result, he acquired a real estate license and entered the industry in 2015 on a parttime basis. “I started out slowly, but quickly began to see opportunities for a better living situation,” Paul recalled. “Bartending only paid so much, and the hours were terrible. At least with real estate, I have the flexibility to work whichever 80 hours of the week I choose,” he said with a laugh. Once he learned the fundamentals of the real estate business, Paul truly fell in love with the industry. “Being a real estate agent gives me the opportunity to help others in a meaningful way while providing individuals with the best service possible,” Paul explained. “I offer an unparalleled real estate experience to clients who choose me as their representative.” In 2017, Paul launched a company along with another agent. He later sold his partnership interest to pursue his dream of being a single owner of his own company. At the end of 2019, he purchased a NextHome franchise and began doing business in February of 2020. As broker and owner of NextHome Evolution, Paul led his team in achieving nearly 90 transactions, which earned him the President’s Circle Award from NextHome. In 2021, the team has closed over $28 million. “I’m very proud of my team members for continually growing their business and improving their sales skills,” Paul said. Paul has always been a team player and has been successful at surrounding himself with like-minded individuals. “The agents I bring on board have positive mindsets, collaborate well with others in a non-competitive way, support each other in their growth, and, most importantly, are good human beings,” he said. “Additionally, we trust each other with feedback and constructive criticism, and as a group, we are open-minded, especially when it comes to technology and industry advancements.” Moreover, Paul is a firm believer in holding people accountable for their work while also providing a fun work environment that supports training and acknowledgment for achievements. With a focus placed on quality over quantity, Paul found it appropriate to keep his longterm agent count to 25. “Keeping my team to a smaller size allows for a more cohesive group that can work closely together,” he said. “My agents never have to wait an unfair amount of time to hear from me.”

Currently, Paul is most passionate about using a new customer-relationship management program that will further support his ambition in building his business. “I’m very excited to see positive results in lead generation that we haven’t seen with any other system,” he said. Growing up in Belleville, Michigan, Paul was greatly influenced by his older brother, Eric, who took full guardianship of Paul after their mother died when Paul was 15 years old. “Eric has always been a hard worker. He was like a father to me, and I will always be grateful for the role he plays in my life,” Paul shared. Paul was recently married to Rachel, who also works in the real estate industry. When they aren’t working, they enjoy traveling, camping, visiting the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, raising chickens and spending time with

Rachel’s two boys — Caleb, 3, and Cameron, 8. The young boys share in Paul’s love for anything with wheels and an engine, and they are thrilled to get grease on their hands and help Paul with his latest car projects. When asked what advice he would give to real estate agents who may be considering becoming a broker, Paul suggested, “I recommend asking yourself these questions: Are you willing to sacrifice time to help others? Are you willing to share your successes and processes to give your agents an advantage over the competition? Are you willing to work countless hours to make sure your organization is successful and not just you?” He continued, “If you’re even slightly hesitant to say yes to any of those questions, just start a team. If you’re willing to put the people in your organization first, then you will do well.”
Although many brokers talk about numbers to their teams as a comparative measure from agent to agent or brokerage to brokerage, Paul said he is not a numbers fan. “In my opinion, being a top producer is great and all, but it means nothing if you’re not providing the best possible experience to your clients. If the focus is on pushing through transactions as quickly as possible just to get a paycheck, then there’s no connection and nothing special — you want to be memorable. I believe process expertise and personal care will yield you millions of dollars with time. To me, the priority is to be a good human and a solid resource to my sphere of influence.” At the end of a workday, the most rewarding part of Paul’s business is having a happy team and satisfied clients. “It’s truly special when I hear the most authentic thank yous from my clients and agents when we succeed,” he said.
