The month of July is peak season for travelers around the world. Traditionally, this is a popular month to celebrate, relax and reward ourselves. However, our long-awaited summer vacation could possibly be impacted by recent travel restrictions. Most likely, our trips will be local, outdoors and maybe even subject to cancellation. Therefore, it is time to adjust our mindsets, get creative and plan a fabulous staycation.
With the right mentality, a fun adventure awaits us all. Creativity will be our best travel agent and destinations will most likely be places that can be reached within a day’s drive. Ideas include family camping trips, backyard barbecues, local pool parties and front yard bonfires. Be a hometown tourist and plan a day trip, which includes buying a few souvenirs for added fun. Get the kids involved and choose a theme. For a controlled, 6 • July 2020
smaller gathering, consider renting a large movie screen and have your own film festival complete with a popcorn machine, and bring your own lawn chairs and games. Michigan is full of wonderful parks for hiking, fishing, picnicking and playing sports. Saying yes to things you normally would not do can offer a genuine break from work and life pressures. Enjoying a staycation can provide high-quality resting time right in your own backyard while empowering your kids and seeing your hometown as a visitor. This July, be spontaneous and visit a far-away place, at home. Summer vacations can still happen in ways we never imagined, and sometimes that is greater than traditional plans. JEFF GLOVER
During Jeff’s first few years in the business, he remained at his job at Art Van and attended Oakland Community College until he encountered a career-altering opportunity to transition into a leadership role. “My greatest professional influences are Kathy and Paul Schweitzer, the former owners of what is now Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel,” Jeff said. “They took a chance on me and trusted me with one of their offices when I was just 20 years old.”
A TRUE LEADER AND LUMINARY
top producer By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D.
After two years of being the top recruiter at that office and transforming a failing office into a thriving one, Jeff was promoted to the director of training and recruiting for the firm’s 17 offices and 600+ agents. In 2008, Jeff decided to leave his management position and return to full-time real estate sales, and that is when he established what is now known today as Jeff Glover & Associates. Then, in 2009, Jeff moved his team to Keller Williams and opened a mega-agent office.
As a REALTOR® and leader of Michigan’s #1 residential real estate team, Jeff Glover is undoubtedly a “housesold” name. Thousands of clients — and probably the majority of Michigan’s 40,000+ agents — recognize Jeff as the driving force and friendly face behind Jeff Glover & Associates and they know, much like his tagline promises, “Jeff Sells.” Consequently, Jeff’s professional accolades and sphere of influence proliferate beyond his team and his sales: Jeff sells, but Jeff also cultivates leaders in the field and gives back to the Metro Detroit community that he proudly calls home. Jeff spent his first 10 years growing up in Livonia before moving to Belleville to live with his mother and attend middle school following his parents’ divorce. He then decided to move in with his father and attend high school in Novi, and it was during his teenage years that Jeff experienced the difficult life lessons that inspired his drive and shaped his work ethic. “When I moved from Belleville to Novi for 16 • July 2020

high school, I didn’t have all the things that everyone else had; in fact, I lived with my dad in a trailer park that was surrounded by a community full of half-a-million-dollar homes,” Jeff said. “I was picked on, embarrassed and motivated to go figure out how I could provide for myself and have all the things that everyone else had.” Jeff’s ambition to transcend his socio-economic circumstances led him to the retail industry where he began to make a name for himself in the world of sales by becoming the #2 salesperson for Circuit City in Michigan when he was 16. He continued to hone his business skills as a salesperson at Art Van Furniture, and his success “on the floor at Art Van” encouraged him to transition to real estate in 2003 — a year after graduating from Novi High School.
Jeff’s team, which now includes 50 talented associates across Metro Detroit and Grand Rapids, is founded on a deep-seated commitment to personal and professional growth. “We believe in this philosophy: If agents are learning, growing, making money and having fun, then there is never a reason to leave us,” Jeff said. “Our team is unique because we do something that most don’t: We teach people how to actually sell — meaning, we teach each agent how to become a salesperson. Then, once they’ve mastered that, we teach them how to lead.” To date, Jeff has achieved a personal career volume of over $200 million and sold over $1 billion as a team, $191 million of which his team generated in 2019. Moreover, his KW brokerages in Plymouth, St. Clair Shores, Birmingham, Grosse Pointe and soon-to-be Brighton sell over $200 million annually. business with him for 10 years. He is also grateful for the love and support of his parents Dale Glover and Kathy Bowling and his stepfather Chuck Bowling, who also works with Jeff.
The most rewarding aspect of my career is helping someone experience something that they never thought possible … period
Jeff, an avid talk radio and documentary film fan, describes himself as a nerd when it comes to music and movies, and he names “Think and Grow Rich” as his all-time favorite book. In the summer, Jeff loves boating and golfing — he lives on a golf course during the week and spends his weekends at his downtown condo near his boat at the Detroit Yacht Club — and in the winter, Jeff enjoys snowmobiling and Lions football. Despite the demands of his many roles and multiple business ventures, Jeff stays grounded at the production level by going on appointments and taking calls at the office. He connects with clients and with community members because he knows that contacts and face-to-face relationships are the foundation of the business. Jeff continues to sell homes because, after 17 years and thousands of closings, he still possesses an unceasing passion for the rudiments of real estate, as well as a responsibility to demonstrate his credibility and expertise as a salesman.
ALTOR® and #1 Team in Michigan for most homes sold from 2012-2018, Jeff has earned the titles of Crain’s Detroit Power Seller, Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces, Corp! magazine’s Most Valuable Entrepreneur, Crain’s Detroit 40 Under 40 and Crain’s Detroit Coolest Places to Work. Despite Jeff’s long list of professional achievements and success, he is most proud of Glover’s Heroes, the non-profit organization funded by Jeff Glover & Associates and dedicated to supporting Michigan veterans, teach18 • July 2020
ers, employed caregivers, firefighters, police officers and emergency medical technicians. “In 2017, during a period when police officers were under a lot of public scrutiny, one of our agents, Jay Harrison, suggested we do something for them; and Glover’s Heroes materialized from that conversation,” Jeff said. “These heroes don’t get the recognition they deserve, and we wanted to do something about it. In addition to every dollar staying in Michigan, every dollar also ends up making its way into a hero’s life in one way or another as 100% of the administrative costs are covered by me.”
In 2018, Jeff founded Live Unreal Companies, the parent company of the #1 KW office Franchisee in Metro Detroit for most homes sold. In addition to housing Jeff Glover & Associates, its nonprofit organization and a number of KW brokerages, Live Unreal Company is more than a real estate conglomerate: It also comprises a variety of successful real estate related organizations, innovative technology tools and products, including Glover U, Jeff’s real estate training and coaching business. Jeff says that, given the current state of @realproducers
“I want to be remembered for making a difference in the lives of millions,” Jeff said. “I realize this may be hard to do given there are only a million or so real estate agents, so don’t be surprised if you see me running for office someday.” affairs, his “absolute passion” is developing people. By leading real estate companies and a nation-wide training company, he is honored to fulfill that purpose on a daily basis. “The most rewarding aspect of my career is helping someone experience something that they never thought possible … period,” Jeff said. “Our mission is ‘Living an Unreal Experience to Deliver One,’ so helping agents live their lives in an unreal way is a daily focus for us. amazing it’s almost unbelievable. That is what it’s all about to us — not just the income, or the houses, boats, watches or the cars — that all means nothing once you’re gone. At the end of the day, are you living in an unreal way?” Jeff’s “unreal” life extends beyond his business and into his relationships with his sister and one of his best friends, Kristy Glover, who has been in
Jeff’s prominence as a true leader and luminary in the industry is rooted in his humble beginnings and propagated by his entrepreneurial spirit. He has moved real estate into uncharted territory and shaped an amazing, almost unbelievable reality … we are definitely looking forward to watching Jeff’s next “unreal experience” unfold and evolve. MEETING AND EXCEEDING GOALS Matthew Adler defines success by creating a goal and then meeting it — however, most often, he’s exceeding it. Nevertheless, his goal achievements don’t define him; rather, they empower him to raise the bar to strive for more in his life. His mindset has prepared him for challenges and obstacles that he views as motivation to succeed. Matthew shared 22 • July 2020

gage loan officers — recognized by The Scotsman Guide as one of the leading loan officers in the country for 2011 and again 2013-2019. Mortgage Executive Magazine ranked him among the top 1% from 20142019. He has been one of the top Michigan State Housing Development Authority loan officers — named every year to their Executive Director Club from its inception in 2012 — specializing in down-payment assistance programs for first-time homebuyers. When Matthew graduated from college, he realized there weren’t many tuba positions available. As luck would have it, his godfather owned a mortgage broker shop and offered him an internship. realproducersmag.com
“I didn’t make a dime that summer,” Matthew shared. “I was still in ‘school mode’ and I absorbed all the business intricacies like a sponge. At the time, there were hundreds of wholesale lenders offering different mortgage products for us to sell. After a few short weeks, I had such a diverse product knowledge that some of the seasoned veterans were asking me how to structure their client loans. I’ve been called a walking, mortgage guideline book — a term of endearment that still helps me today.”
Practicing the tuba for three hours a day taught Matthew the value of self-discipline when he was in college studying music performance. “I established a solid work ethic early on in my college days,” Matthew said. “I’m proud to say I still maintain a high level of commitment to whatever it is that I’m doing — I don’t rest until my work is done.” A typical day for Matthew begins around 8 a.m. and continues until one or two in the morning. “Most Oakland County Real Producers • 23

When others say no, I can usually find a way to say yes.” When asked about industry changes, Matthew shared that he’s seen nothing but change. “There has been more change in the last 14 years than stayed the same. Some examples include the financial crisis, mortgage guidelines getting tighter, things relaxing and iBuyer platforms threatening to take over the industry,” Matthew said. He believes the only way to thrive is to welcome change — don’t fight it and anticipate what’s coming down the road. “In an effort to speed up the most cumbersome part of getting a mortgage, I have learned to automate more of the buyer’s documentation collection process,” Matthew said. “This helps speed up mortgage approval while making it more approachable for buyers.” While helping clients and building his business is paramount to reaching his business goals,
Matthew views family as the most important thing in his life. He and his wife, Nicole have three children — sons, Isaac, 12, and Eli, 11, and daughter, Olive, 7. “A day isn’t complete without time spent with them,” Matthew proudly shared. “No matter how busy we are, we always take time to have a meal together.”
We offer a wide-range of services to support the needs of various customers, including:
In addition to coaching his son’s soccer team, Matthew plays the tuba with the Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra as well as with the Detroit klezmer group Klezundheit!

It was tough but I was glad to have 12 years of HR experience and a degree I could fall back on when I needed it.” Denise added with a wink, “I knew my real estate days weren’t over, just on hold.”
P O S I T I V E LY R I S I N G T O T H E T O P Denise Bellore, broker at Thrive Realty Company, has experienced firsthand the ebbs and flows of the real estate market. She has proven herself alongside the ever-changing trends in the economy, the housing market and even advancements in technology. While these events have caused some real estate agents to leave the business, it is despite them, that Denise is at the top of her game.
“Real estate is a very different business on the inside than it looks on the outside,” Denise explained. “It takes a lot of perseverance to be successful in this industry; expect to fail and expect to get back up.” 28 • July 2020

Denise’s business stamina and tireless pursuit to reach her goals are among her many strengths. She first started her real estate career 18 years ago working exclusively with new home construction clients and builders. When the market took a downward turn, she was forced to decide: go into the resale side of the business or take a break. Due to the conditions of the market and her financial needs, she chose to combine her real estate sales experience with her corporate human
Four years later, Denise was once again pulled to listen to her heart. Life changes gave her a moment in time to change her course and do what she loved. The real estate market wasn’t on the rise in 2011, yet Denise was ready to dig into the real guts of the industry and learn the resale side during the foreclosure and short sale days, with the forethought of being ready for the return of a good real estate market in the coming years. Given her corporate, project management, process-driven experience, she channeled what she had learned from all her previous jobs and created systems and tools that would fast-track her into productivity. “After I took a break from real estate, I realized my love for the general public was just too great and I needed to get back to my true passion.” She said Oakland County Real Producers • 29

Denise has gathered strength from the influential women in her life; most notably, her mother and her sister. At the age of 19, Denise’s father passed away; however, it was his support and admiration for the strong women in his life that has kept Denise motivated. “Something definitely changes when you lose a parent, but my father’s solid belief in the strength of my mother, my sister and myself has always inspired me.” Denise respectfully leads all her real estate transactions with integrity and grit. It is important for her to be with her clients every step of the way. “My clients have me from day one to beyond the closing,” she shared. “It is important to 30 • July 2020

part of what I do is winning the client by earning their trust and business.”
Denise leads the Denise Bellore Group with the vision of collaboration, mentoring and encouragement for growth and education. “We are heavy on learning and helping each other to reach personal goals,” Denise said. “We respect each other and take real approaches to life and work. We are strong in more ways than the numbers.”
The bottom line for Denise is that it’s never too late to find success in real estate. “It’s never too late to give generously and live generously,” Denise said. “I always say, ‘it’ll all work out,’ and somehow it always does, especially with an open mind and a positive attitude. You’ve got to have faith in the business, faith in the wins and faith in the losses.”
Cultivating business on a consistent basis is something Denise has maintained to reach her top-producing success. Last year alone she achieved nearly $11 million in sales volume and has been in the top 10% of her former brokerage for the past six years. “The magic of real estate happens when consistency is practiced,” she said. “To me, real estate is a way of life and it fits in my life beautifully. The pace, my mindset and the constant change is so fulfilling.” Moreover, Denise said beyond the pace of her work, it’s truly the connection she has with her clients that brings her the greatest joy. “My favorite

Working Home FOR
FROM
home matters By Shauna Osborne
part of our work lives. Establishing key habits for working from home will allow you to work smartly and effectively, making the most of this “new normal” in our professional lives: Establish a dedicated “office” space.
As tempting as it is to work from your comfy couch, resist! To set the tone for your workday, you should physically change locations. Set up a designated, distraction-free work area, preferably with a door you can close in case your “coworkers” get noisy. If possible, invest in a quality office chair. Dress for work.
In the same vein, get yourself in a productive mindset by starting your day much like you would if you were going into the office. Wake up early, take a shower, and get out of those sweats. Dressing for work from home has real psychological benefits in boundary-setting, impacting both how you view your company culture and yourself professionally. Set your work hours (and stick to them!).
Start and end your day at specific times, and be strict with yourself about it. It’s tempting to let work and home lives bleed into each other since it’s all happening in one place; setting solid boundaries is crucial for work-life balance and mental health! Take breaks.
Get up and leave your workspace regularly to stretch your legs, clear your mind, and rest your eyes. As someone who has been working fully remotely since 2010, I’d like to welcome you to the telecommuting workforce! Like it or not, many of us have been relegated to our homes to perform our jobs while sheltering in place. As you’ve no doubt discovered, there’s much more to working remotely than setting up a home office. And, as we slowly begin to re-emerge into society, we will likely find that telecommuting has become a more permanent

Metro Detroit Community Comes Together to Feed and Fuel the Frontline
Amid the coronavirus crisis, best friends Kristen Henson — a real estate agent at RE/MAX Classic — and Aimee Morr — the owner of Aimee Morr Photography — reached out to a friend who is an emergency room physician and asked what they could do to help.

“She replied by telling us that meals would never be turned down, so we ran with that on a much larger scale,” Kristen said.
On March 30, Kristen and Aimee co-founded Feed Our Heroes - Metro Detroit with a goal of raising $1,000 through the organization’s Facebook page. What ensued from there totally exceeded their expectations: Within the first four days, they raised over $10,000, and by the end of April, Kristen and Aimee had raised $28,372 and

Through Feed Our Heroes, Kristen and Aimee have witnessed how small acts of kindness — meals packaged in containers with handwritten messages of appreciation — make a big impact on people’s daily lives. During deliveries, they experienced an outpouring of gratitude from hospital workers and

On a daily basis, Kristen and Aimee receive messages, emails and texts from hospital staff thanking them for delivering the single meal that fueled their full day of work. “Many days, hospital workers were too busy to get out and pick up a carryout or to actually sit down and break for a meal,” Kristen said. “The kindness and generosity of the community have given these frontline warriors a much-needed moment of comfort.” Kristen, who is passionate about whatever she puts her mind to and is typically “up for a good challenge,” realizes that every situation — even those with the bleakest

My favorite summer vacation is heading down to southern Indiana to attend the Jackson County Fair and spend time with my family. I have been going since I was a young kid. The fair has two foodie things I look forward to all year: pineapple whip — this amazing infused pineapple ice cream — and a lemon shakeup — the best lemonade ever! Besides the food, there is a lot of livestock, rides, and lots of events in the grandstand. When we are not at the fair, we are hanging out on our family’s farm which has been going on for five generations. They raise the best watermelon — I have to bring home a carload for friends here in Michigan.
My favorite summer vacation is going to Belgium to visit family — plus it’s a hop, skip and jump to a lot of amazing destinations.

Any beach or campsite with our kiddos! Family, nature, and no technology ... can’t beat it!
My favorite summer vacation spot is Traverse City. We usually stay at the Hotel Indigo right downtown on the water. TC is so great because you can have a different type of vacation every day. You can party on the beach across the street from the hotel, get in your car and drive 15 minutes to several championship-caliber golf courses, venture out on a hiking trail in the middle of the woods or kayak on a nearby river or lake. At night, you can have a nice dinner, go to the casino, and hang out in several local breweries, distilleries, patio bars or on the roof of the hotel. We never run out of things to do.

OYOLA A LOYAL AND TENACIOUS TEAM PLAYER
Position/Title: Closing Coordinator Company: The Linda Rea Team at Real
Estate One-Rochester How long have you been working with the person who nominated you?
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that I’m a part of something that impacts people’s lives. Buying or selling a home is an emotional and financial investment — I strive to make the process as smooth as possible.
One year What is the most challenging aspect of your job? How long have you been working in the real estate industry?
One year What did you do before you began working in your current position?
I worked in retail as a customer service manager. What does your typical workday look like?
A typical day consists of checking my texts and emails first thing in the morning and determining the order of importance for my daily/weekly tasks. If I have a closing, I coordinate with title companies, loan officers, buyers/sellers and agents to schedule the time and location. We do a lot of charitable work, so I work on coordinating those items as well. How would you describe your job in one word?
Purposeful
Some challenges include working with top-producing agents who are always on the go, trying to be a step ahead, knowing where they need to be and keeping them on track with their schedules and appointments. What is one thing about you that others might find surprising or interesting?
When I was a little girl, I could view the World Trade Center from my kitchen window, and, every day, I promised myself that I would work there someday. That day became a reality in 1991 when I worked as an administrative assistant for Yasuda Bank & Trust Corporation.

Linda, who has been working in real estate for 40 years, says that loyalty “goes a long way” in the business and that being a “super team player is extremely important in real estate.” According to Linda, Diane exhibits both of these crucial characteristics. “Diane never says, ‘it’s not my job.’ Instead, she just figures out how to do it and gets the job done,” Linda said. “Diane also realizes that we need to service our clients second to none, and she helps ensure five-star service in each transaction.”
When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy traveling, walking along Rochester’s beautiful trails and cross-stitching. How do you feel about being nominated as a Behind-theScenes All-Star?
I was in shock when I saw the email — thought it was an error until I read the entire email. I am truly honored.
Why do you think you excel at your job?
I take pride in being an out-of-the-box thinker. If I encounter a challenge, I find ways to get the job done — I love working in a team environment
“You never need a holiday or a birthday to recognize, honor and reward employees for work well done,” said Linda Rea, TOP PRODUCER and owner of The Linda Rea Team. “It’s important to celebrate employees like Diane who are loyal team players on a daily basis.”
Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, about your job or about your relationship with the person who nominated you?
I love working with The Linda Rea Team and am grateful that I have personally and professionally excelled in my position.
Linda also applauds and admires how Diane persevered through a difficult battle with cancer — and won! “Diane also lost her father-in-law during this time, but after grieving his loss and gaining her health back, she is thriving,” Linda said. “Our entire team was so impressed with how tenacious she was and continues to be on a daily basis. DAVID PURVIS FARM BUREAU INSURANCE
PROTECTING HIS BIGGEST INVESTMENT: PEOPLE
partner spotlight By Robbyn Moore
David Purvis, owner of David Purvis Insurance Agency, started his agency 10 years ago. His first team member and his first client are still with him today. Despite industry and economic changes, his unwavering loyalty to his team and clients have proven successful. “People are the most important asset to my business,” David said. “Relationships come first — whether it’s a team member or a client — investing in people will always lead to success.”
David’s background in the Army, along with 20 years of corporate experience, has given him the necessary tools to build up his business. While he is backed by Farm Bureau insurance, he has access to multiple carriers. “I have the best of both worlds,” David explained. “If Farm Bureau isn’t the right match or a complete solution, I have access to hundreds of other carriers — giving me the flexibility to find a more suitable match to a person’s needs and budget.”
David’s business model supports a unique customer experience. “We aren’t policy peddlers,” he said. “We’re not a one-size-fits-all agency — and our customers appreciate that.” The biggest compliment David can get is a client referral, stating, “It’s a confirmation that I’m doing the right thing day in and day out.” He went on to say, “I don’t need to be the biggest agency — just one that puts value in its employees and integrity behind its clients.” David strives to be an owner who acquires, trains, and retains the best employees in the business while creating a book of business built on referred clients.
Recently, David noticed how the increasing costs of auto insurance have impacted the budgets of many Michigan families. “There are several variables that contribute to this factor: the rise in vehicle costs and medical coverage, the growing number of lawsuits and the high cost of fraud,” he said. “Our agency focuses on educating our clients, so they know what they are paying for and fully understand their coverage.”

Keeping real estate agents top of mind is a crucial part of David’s philosophy. He shared, “Our real estate partners appreciate our fast, friendly and professional services. They’re also relieved when

we work hard to ensure a smooth closing — alleviating any stress to the agents or their clients.” Having a solid work/life balance is paramount to David — not only for his team but as a priority for himself. He is an avid outdoorsman who grew up hunting and fishing with his dad. Last summer, David completed a full Tough Mudder run — a goal he worked hard to accomplish. He and his wife, Linda, have been married for 26 years and together, they enjoy playing tennis, exercising, vacationing, country music and a good old-fashioned night of board games. They have two daughters — Morgan, 23, who works in New York City for Price Waterhouse
Coopers, and Maddie, 18, a freshman at the University of Michigan. The entire Purvis family has always been committed to volunteering and giving back and are incredibly involved in their community. The David Purvis Agency is a Blue Ribbon Office of Excellence and offers a full line of personal and commercial insurance products including home, auto, umbrella, life, and all business coverages. The agency has been recognized numerous times as one of the top 20 agencies in Southeast Michigan. In 2018 they were named Agency of the Year. LESSONS LEARNED from COVID-19
As I sit down to write this article, it’s May, and things are pretty tough out there, financially. Almost all my friends and family – spread across many industries, socioeconomic classes, and age groups – are struggling in some way. Businesses across the country are wrestling with the decision to reopen and how to alter policies and mitigate their risks one way or another. While these are still the early days of financial recovery, right now, what lessons can we learn from the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic? Emergency Funds
Once considered a core financial practice for many, emergency funds have been seen as “wasted assets” in recent times by some financial advisors given today’s low interest rates. However, now, with many not sure from where or when their next paycheck may come about, having three to six months’ worth of living expenses put back in a savings account is, indeed, a lifesaver.

Panic Buying
First, I was delighted to learn there is a German term for this, hamsterverkauf, which roughly translates to “hamster purchasing.” You know what I’m referring to: toilet-paper hoarders! Panic buying can lead to inflation of prices of staples, which we all rely on, and can hurt stores, as well, when they are not able to accurately assess supply and demand. Clearer messaging by both consumers and businesses seems to be the best solution here: Stores should place limits on numbers of items purchased and be vigilant about communicating what is in stock. Buyers, too, should not contribute to the madness by hoarding.

Risk Tolerance

Simply put, many of us are finding, in light of the extreme stock market volatility as of late, that our portfolios are less risk-tolerant than we thought when we last reviewed them. The good news is, after surviving this crisis, we will have a better handle on our real risk aversion.

Although times are challenging right now, it’s best not to panic and make short-term decisions you will regret in the long-term: “Don’t do something; just stand there,” as one investment advisor offered, a twist on the well-known saying!

Bill Wang Bridging Cultures and Growing Communities
WHEN BILL WANG ATTENDED THE GMAR ORIENTATION IN 2009, HE HAD AN EPIPHANY AS HE WATCHED A SHORT VIDEO INTERVIEW FEATURING CURRENT AND PAST BOARD PRESIDENTS. “I WAS TOUCHED AND REALIZED THAT THIS PROFESSION IS THE PLACE WHERE ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A COMMUNITY AND ESPECIALLY IN THE LIVES OF IMMIGRANTS,” BILL SAID.

As a new REALTOR®, Bill was inspired to become that person who makes a positive impact on the community and on the lives of his friends; and for the past decade, Bill has continued to shape a career out of bringing communities together and helping people fulfill the “American Dream” in Michigan.

master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1994, Bill moved to Michigan where he worked as a senior IT solution architect and consultant, providing millions of dollars of technical solutions to one of “The Big Three” automotive manufacturers and helping automotive engineers improve vehicle performance, understand big data analytics and innovate future car technology. During the economic downturn, Bill saw an opportunity to diversify his skillset in the real estate industry and began flipping bank-owned houses and short sales in Detroit and Ypsilanti. As his new business began to grow, Bill also grew more passionate about helping more people fulfill their “American Dream” through Michigan homeownership. “I feel accomplished when people call Michigan their home, especially when college graduates from Michigan schools and other top universities are attracted to what our state has to offer on both a professional and personal level,” he said. Five years into his real estate career, Bill realized that becoming a broker was an inevitable step to making a bigger impact on the community. Now
as the principal broker at 1st Michigan Realty in Bloomfield and with a career volume of $80 million, Bill leads a growing team of 20+ enthusiastic and knowledgeable agents and two support staff, all of whom are committed to culturally diversifying the community through their professionalism, passion and integrity. “Everyone at our brokerage is part of my family,” Bill said. “I especially want to thank my assistant Lulu Zhang, Nicole Chen and all the other team members who volunteer a tremendous amount of their time to our local communities. I’m also grateful for Nicole Hou, whose marketing network brought many new international investors to Detroit over the past four years and for what Kevin Zhou has done to promote Warren and the City of Madison Heights.” Bill also says that his business wouldn’t be successful without Listing Team Leader, Foochern Ting; Caitlyn Meng, who translated many reading materiOakland County Real Producers • 51

als into Chinese; Xiaochen Lui, chief editor of “RealEstateMI,” the brokerage’s daily publication; and everyone else on the team. Bill explained that many of their clients don’t speak English and, therefore, find it difficult to understand legal terms in real estate contacts. “The culture and language barriers can be challenging, so we spend a lot of time and effort helping our clients understand the process and their legal rights,” Bill said. “In the end, we become the bridge and strive to fill in all the culture and language gaps for our agents, buyers, sellers and co-agents.” Bill’s commitment to bridging cultures and growing communities extends beyond his office, his clients and his business at 1st Michigan Realty. Bill is one of the key founders of iloveMichigan, a media station on WeChat, the world’s largest Chinese social media 52 • July 2020
platform. iloveMichigan is the state’s first Chinese media platform that promotes Michigan’s social life, culture, travel and food. Additionally, to give back to the community, 1st Michigan Realty provides internship opportunities to high school and college students and supports over 10 local charities and several student organizations at Michigan universities, as well as serves as the major source of funding for LiveinMichigan. org. Currently, Bill is participating in a project to establish an Asian grocery store in the Novi area. “Through the latest technology, well-organized big data and professional knowledge, I strongly believe that real estate plays a crucial role in shaping and building up communities,” Bill said. “By working with accountants, lawyers, business owners and city officials, we can make a difference in children’s education, improve lifestyles, stimulate Michigan’s travel industry, and even influence Michigan’s food culture and grocery industry.” In real estate, Bill has discovered “the thread” that connects all the dots by combining people, presenta-
tion and technical skills with big data. More significantly, he has held steadfast to the vision that inspired him at the start of his career by seizing real estate’s vast opportunities to make a difference in the Michigan community and in the lives of immigrants. “Real Producers provides a powerful platform that unifies the most successful and knowledgeable real estate experts in the area,” Bill said. “I firmly believe that together this group can shape and improve communities and bring more opportunities back to the Metro Detroit area.” Bill shows us that “houses touch everyone’s lives.” He also inspires us all to discover that collectively, real estate professionals can do more than just touch individual lives — they can unify people and cultures into transformative and thriving Michigan communities. @realproducers

RE/MAX First TEEING UP TO BENEFIT CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK HOSPITALS®
making a difference By Jane K. Asher, Ph.D.
This summer, RE/MAX First will continue its longstanding commitment to helping local children by hosting its fifth annual golf outing to support the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® (CMN) and the RE/MAX Communication Preschool Program. At RE/MAX First’s fourth annual golf outing, which was held at Maple Lane Golf Club on August 14, 2019, RE/MAX FIRST raised $38,157 to benefit CMN and the RE/MAX Communication Preschool Program. Nearly 145 golfers participated, and 165 people attended the dinner, which included raffle baskets and a 50/50 drawing.

The RE/MAX Communication Preschool Program, which is part of Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak, is designed for children ages 3 through 5 diagnosed with speech or language impairments. The program is funded entirely through annual contributions made by local RE/MAX brokers and agents through the CMN. Real estate agents Candice Thompson and Chris Halpin serve as RE/MAX First ambassadors for CMN, as well as organizers and co-chairs of the annual golf outing, a signature event for RE/MAX First. @realproducers

“After years of helping with RE/ MAX First fundraising events, I decided to step forward and make a difference in bettering children’s lives,” Candice said. “I’ve served as a CMN ambassador for a little over one year. Real estate is my career, but helping people is my passion.” “Five years ago, when I was asked to be the CMN Ambassador, I didn’t know what that would entail or what the partnership with RE/MAX was all about. As I learned and got

more involved, it has become the most rewarding part of my career in real estate,” said Chris. “When you meet amazing children and see the positive changes in them from being part of the RE/MAX Communication Preschool, it is truly a blessing to play a part in that.” Candice says she is honored to coordinate all the CMN fundraising events and watch the RE/MAX team come together to help children. “At RE/ MAX First, we are very passionate about this program and giving back, mainly because of our leadership,” she said. “Many of our agents give back as miracle agents by donating a portion of each commission check.” Supporting CMN is important to RE/ MAX First because the money stays local and helps children and families in southeast Michigan. “Many of these parents have no other option or place to turn to get the support they need,” Candice said. “It is our responsibility to give back to the community that gives so much to our agents.”
“The work they do at the preschool changes lives not just for the children but for their families. Seeing how much better those kids’ lives become and hearing their stories motivates me to push harder and do more to help,” said Chris. “While we are constantly fundraising through agent contributions and incorporating CMN fundraising into all of our events, our annual golf outing — our flagship event — is my favorite because it brings our agents, families, friends and vendors together for this important cause, and that is truly inspiring.” In 2019, through their golf outing, Memorial Day Parade, Halloween event and agent contributions through the Miracle Home System, RE/MAX First offices in Clinton Township, Chesterfield, Shelby Township, St. Clair Shores, Royal Oak and Harper Woods collectively raised a total of $61,000 to benefit the preschool program. As a result of their impressive fundraising efforts, RE/MAX First was recently honored at the RE/MAX of Southeastern Michigan Awards Gala for making the highest contributions to CMN for an office size of 26 and up. The fifth annual RE/MAX First CMN golf outing will take place Monday, August 3, 2020, at Golden Hawk Golf Club in Casco, Michigan. If you are interested in getting involved with the event or participating as a golfer or a sponsor, please call Chris Halpin or Candice Thompson at (586) 792-8000, or email them at chalpin@remax.net or candicet@remax.net.
